Wooster Community Hospital Offering New Services The rate of expansion at Wooster Community Hospital was measured in more than square footage this past year. The hospital added seven new services in an effort to bring the best care closer to home for its patients. The hospital launched Interventional Cardiology, which allows the hospital to perform surgical procedures on patients suffering from chest pains or acute heart attacks. Physicians can treat the blockage of coronary arteries with a balloon or stent, whereas before they could only take photos of the blockage then transport the patient to another hospital 25 to 30 minutes away. The goal is to clear a patient’s blocked artery in less than 90 minutes to best preserve the heart muscles. Wooster’s physicians have done it consistently in under 60 minutes since they started the procedures in early December, and have completed more than 170 procedures, including 140 elective procedures and 31 STEMIs. “The biggest benefit is those patients that arrive to our emergency department having an acute myocardial infarction (MI) can be treated here quickly, safely and efficiently with experienced physicians versus having to get in an ambulance or helicopter and having to be transferred to a hospital that is 40 miles away,” said Darryl Manley, director of cardiovascular services. In response to the local opioid epidemic, Wooster added a new medical detox program called New Vision, first observed by Chief Nursing Officer Shelly Huff during a site visit to Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. patients withdrawing from opiates and alcohol and once they’re stabilized, they can be placed in rehabilitation. Over the last year, Wooster hospital has seen more and more cases of overdoses, mainly heroin, coming through the emergency department. These patients are resuscitated or given Narcan to neutralize the drug effects. New Vision gives patients that want to get sober a medical option to do so, but on a voluntary basis. “We want to play a role (at the hospital) and we’re going to collaborate with other resources in the area,” Huff told board members in November. “A lot of times these people don’t want voluntary help. But this would give us an option if they did want help.” The hospital has also improved its endocrinology (diabetes) care and opened a new Medical Outpatient/Infusion Center, offering chemotherapy and chemotherapy-related services. The HealthPoint campus welcomed the NOWClinic, an urgent care service, and chiropractics, led by Wooster native Dr. Katie Dossi. The hospital also announced plans to offer telehealth services, known as WCH TodayCare, and a medical detox program called New Vision. Wooster hospital expanded its endocrinology services with the addition of an experienced nurse practitioner to provide treatment for diabetes patients. She has joined the hospital and has a full-time office. “The incidence of diabetes continues to rise in our nation – not only among adults, but younger patients as well,” President and CEO Bill Sheron said. “The nurse practitioner has taken care of many of these patients – in conjunction with physicians – for many years.” Beyond its diabetes services, Wooster Endocrinology also specializes in thyroid problems, adrenal disease and metabolic bone disease. The NOWClinic will address the occupational needs of Wooster’s employer community as well as a cost-effective urgent care. The hospital has chosen to house the clinic at its HealthPoint campus after its previous urgent care service struggled outside its property a few years ago, according to CFO Scott Boyes. “Wooster Community Hospital ventured into urgent care a few years ago but found offering this service challenging at that time when embedded within another entity’s retail environment,” CFO Scott Boyes said. If a patient is unable to see their primary care doctor, the NOWClinic can handle their non-emergency care needs without an appointment. Boyes reported that patients have already responded positively to the professionalism of the staff as well as their timely, efficient service. Brian Coote, director of rehabilitation, health and wellness, recommended the hospital add chiropractic services because it fit the wide array of treatment options already offered at HealthPoint. Dossi joined the team in early 2016 and was impressed the hospital chose to add the program to its more mainstream medical services. Continued on page 6

Pomerene Hospital has been bringing in new services to the community over the past few months as they continue to make quality care close to home a top priority for their patients. The Aultman Heart Center and Pomerene are partnering to bring additional heart services to Holmes County this year. There will be additional cardiovascular surgeons brought in to Pomerene each week, in order to provide patients with the expertise of Aultman Heart Center at the local level. The new partnership provides the community with more local services for complete heart care, more coverage (24/7) and consultation for hospital care, and inpatient admission and hospital coverage. Additional developments are taking place this year in Pomerene Internal Medicine. Dr. Loren Kirchner, MD, MS, FACP first came to Pomerene in April 2017. As Dr. Kirchner has stayed busy, Pomerene has seen the need to add to their services and Dr. Rohini Kalisetti, MD will be joining Pomerene Internal Medicine in September. Before her residency, Dr. Kalisetti got a chance to do clinical rotations in and around Wooster. WASC has package pricing available for the self-pay or Church pay population, for their total joint surgeries along with many of the other procedures that are able to be performed at WASC. Not all patients are candidates for outpatient total joint procedures and only your surgeon can help you decide if outpatient total joint surgery is for you. WASC has also added two new professional services; cataract surgeries, with Dr. Sireesha Clark and urology services, with Dr. Miguel Proano. We are very excited to offer these two new lines of service to the communities that we serve. Mona Lisa Touch Laser Therapy: New Technology for Your Most Intimate Issue Contributed by Dr. Mary South, MD Northeast Ohio Urogynocology New laser technology, MonaLisa Touch®, is changing the playing field for people suffering from genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). GSM is a fancy term used to describe symptoms that roughly half of all menopausal women experience secondary to decreased estrogen levels, namely dryness, burning and irritation of the vaginal tissues, decreased lubrication, discomfort during sex, urinary urgency, painful urination and recurrent urinary tract infections. As a physician who has seen the benefits to women first hand, I can tell you the life-changing effects have surprised me. But what have researchers found? How long does it last? Are there any long-term harmful effects from the laser? Behnia-Willison et al. looked at the long-term safety and efficacy of the MonaLisa Touch® in a study recently published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.1 The study included 102 women and 84% experienced significant relief from symptoms of GSM with laser therapy. The researchers evaluated symptoms related to sexual function, pain with intercourse and how bothered the women were by their sexual issues. Improvement in all measures was seen through the long-term follow-up of 24 months. Bladder function, prolapse, urge incontinence, and vaginal sensation and lubrication were also significantly improved.

A study published in 2015 reported similar findings with significant improvement in symptoms of vaginal atrophy.2 In this study, of the 77 women studied, 20 of those women were not sexually active before treatment due to their symptoms. Seventeen out of 20 of those women were able to resume sexual activity after 12 weeks (three treatments). We have had similar results in our practice as well. To take a woman who is unable to have sex because of the severity of her symptoms and then, after three five-minute treatments and twelve weeks, to return to normal sexual function is incredible! Furthermore, no adverse events occurred in any of the study subjects from either study. In our experience, we have also seen no significant adverse outcomes aside from the expected tenderness and burning women feel for a couple of hours after the procedure. Other researchers have reported similar results as the data presented here. Currently, we don’t have long-term data beyond two years from treatment. We don’t know how many women will need retreated or when. It seems logical that the tissues would begin to atrophy again with time and symptoms would return. However, given the ease and brevity of the procedure and the minimal to no downtime, repeat treatments seem a small inconvenience for the tremendous benefits the laser provides.
