This Advent Season Story by EMILY RUMES DIX COMMUNICATIONS

W

hen I was young, my parents started a Christmas tradition with my three siblings and I that has continued to influence the way I connect with the season each year. During the weeks of Advent, starting on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, we would gather to talk about the story of Christ as a family. The time we spent on the living room couch wasn't taken up with thoughts of the gifts we wanted, the shopping or Santa – all these

things are part of the celebration we hold around Christmas as a culture, but they were pushed to the sidelines in order to help us remember the entire story of who Jesus was and what he meant to us both personally, in our Christian faith, and to the world. Advent in and of itself is a sort of countdown, a building up to the day of Christmas, but the focus for us always remained on scripture. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent, we would gather together, sing worship songs and read from

the Bible. While it is wonderful to think about the birth of Jesus and his time with his parents as a baby, it is important to understand that this small part of his story was only the beginning of what God had planned for his life. I always felt that the time we spent together as a family during Advent was something that we desperately needed. There was a calm that came over these evenings, no matter what we had been running around working on or what extra activities we had been participating in just moments before. The candles in the Advent wreath were lit and we were able to focus and be quiet. Silence was a real rarity on most evenings in

our home with four kids always competing, both with each other and for our parents' attention. I'm sure there were times where we missed a Sunday over the years here and there, but overall it was a part of our family as much as any one of us – a way to really see each other and to share and pray together. My parents kept it going not because they had to, but because they wanted to and I could always sense that. This activity wasn't the same for them as going to work or school – it was different. Although the season of Advent is believed to have been started in the Lutheran church, it has become a common practice for many different Christian denominations. Each Advent candle represents

a different part of the story of Christ's birth and while traditions may vary, my parents taught us that the first candle was for Prophecy. This candle reminds us that many different prophets throughout the Bible had foretold of Jesus' coming. It represents the hope and anticipation leading up to the time when Jesus was born. The second candle we lit was was for Bethlehem, the place where Jesus was born. Today, Bethlehem is a small city, located just 6 miles south of the Old City of Jerusalem in the West Bank which is one of the Palestinian Territories. Bethlehem sits at the foot of the Judaean Hills, which

are these beautiful, terraced, green slopes – ideal land for shepherds trying to keep a watchful eye on their sheep at night. This leads us to our third candle, the Shepherds candle. During the time of Jesus' birth, there were shepherds sleeping out on the hills around Bethlehem, most likely taking turns sleeping on makeshift beds around a fire and then waking up to check on their sheep in the darkness. The light of the candles reminds us of both the joy and the fear these shepherds most likely experienced when angles appeared and told them about the birth of Jesus. The fourth candle is for these

Angels and it represents peace. Even though the shepherds were terrified at first, the angels were reassuring and conveyed this peace to them, telling them to go and see where Jesus was and to share the news of what had happened with others. On Christmas Eve my family would light the final candle in the center of the wreath. This candle is normally white, to represent purity. It is also called the Christ candle and is meant to remind us that Christ was not just a baby born in a manger, but also the Savior who came into the world to save us from our sin. Lighting this final candle always made the Advent wreath burn at it's

brightest, bringing the fullness of this light into the quiet of our home – the light of Christ shining in our dark. These candles burning brighter and brighter as Christmas approaches is a reminder to me that the darkness is always there, but because my faith tells me there is light despite the darkness, I have hope. My prayer for you and the people you connect with at Christmas is that you will be a light to each other, be that hope. Shine bright, especially where you see darkness taking it's toll. Let's turn down the volume of the loud world around us and turn towards each other to be inspired by the light of hope.

The Christmas Story Matthew 1:18-2:12 • King James Version (KJV)

N

ow the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was

done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land

of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Grown on the highest part of their vineyard, and oak aged in neutral French oak barrels, it makes an excellent pairing with soft cheeses, rotisserie chicken, and freshly caught grilled fish. If you're looking for a full bodied, dry red wine, the Sangiovese from their Postcard Series goes well with roasted veggies, venison and wild game. Due to the limited production of some of their wines, it may be best to call 330-263-4345 for precise availability. Be sure to check their wine availability page on their website, troutmanvineyards.com for a list of current store locations where you can purchase Troutman Vineyards wines. On Saturday, December 3rd Troutman Vineyards will host their annual holiday open house with live music and free admission, starting at 8 p.m. Regular hours for their location at 4243 Columbus Road (Route 3 South) in Wooster are Monday through Thursday 11

Heartland Adventures A Traditional Meal in an Amish Home Story by EMILY RUMES DIX COMMUNICATIONS

H

ave you ever wished you could sit down and have a delicious meal, while learning about Amish home traditions and family life? Maybe you've wondered what it would be like to visit with the Amish in an authentic setting, to eat real Amish cooking brought straight from the kitchen right to your table. Well, luckily there are some warm, wonderful people that have decided to take on the task of satisfying the English curiosity. Edna Kline, who is herself Amish, has been welcoming people into her home for about four years now. She noted that there are probably four of five groups that come back each year, particularly in the fall to take pictures of the leaves and the beautiful colors that come out

Another name to know if you are looking to experience a traditional meal in an Amish home is Amish Heartland Group Tours. Shelley Millage is the main liaison who works together with Amish homes and the groups that will be visiting for a meal. Normally there is a minimum of 5 people for the Amish Heartland Group Tours, but you can reserve a meal for less than 5 people at a flat fee of $150. With 5 or more people it is normally $30 per person and there are discounts for much larger groups of 50 people or more at around $25 per person. After the meal while guests are eating, the Amish hosts will tell about their family, answer questions and may walk diners through the main floor of their home to see how it is set up, with an opportunity to take photos outside with the buggy. “The best policy is to ask the host and hostess what they are comfortable with when it comes to taking pictures and touring the home,” Shelley said. Each home does have an indoor restroom for guests and with some advanced notice, the family may even offer a buggy ride after or before the meal (usually for around $10 per person). how we live. They love it. This past year we had one of our miniature horses that had a baby, so we took our guests out to see the baby.” A meal in Edna's home can be set up as more of a brunch or a dinner, afternoon or evening, either one is fine. The best way to set up a meal and find out the pricing is to contact Edna directly at 330-6000367. While it's ideal to know a week or two ahead of time, Edna has been able to work with people even when they are looking to set something up on shorter notice. “I'm happy to do different things for birthdays too,” said Edna. “We can even put together a party or a celebration with the guests bringing gifts and then everyone can go sit in the living room after the meal and stay however long they want to. Plus I will do a small cake for the person whose birthday it is.” Edna takes the time to get to

the Amish family, take a payment from guests over the phone and then send the guests a confirmation with directions to the home. Most of the Amish homes are within 20 minutes driving distance from Berlin, Ohio. The food for the Amish Heartland Group Tours includes broasted chicken, roast beef, Amish noodles, green beans, hot and cold beverages, and assorted pies. They are also willing to be a little flexible on the menu if guests have something specific in mind that they would prefer. One of the homes has been working with Amish Heartland Group Tours for 15 years. Some of the Amish cooks prefer larger groups and some prefer a smaller number of guests. Most times they will serve the meal, but occasionally if it is a smaller group they may eat with you.

An Amish Christmas Story by MARK OLIVER & MARCUS YODER

O

ne of the highlights of the Christmas Season for any Amish child is the school Christmas Program. Preparations for the program begin early, and by Thanksgiving, most teachers have prepared the program material and given the parts to the pupils. In many schools, the Thanksgiving Singing at school is when the pupils and teachers exchange names for the gift exchange. The next few weeks are a flurry of preparation, with pupils thinking about what gifts they hope to give to their “name-exchange” person and memorizing their poems for recital and their parts in the plays. All

but the youngest pupils are eager to learn their parts “in secret” so Mom and Dad will be surprised at the program. The start of program practicing in exciting for the pupils, though perhaps a little less so for teachers, who are trying to fit practice and preparation in to the lesson schedule. “Props” for the play are brought along to school with much secrecy and giggles: “Mom wondered why we need a rocking chair for school!” The storeroom and basement take on the appearance of a thrift-shop. Many hours go into practicing and getting the schoolhouse program-

ready. The last few days before the program, the energy level is high and there is a lot of cleaning going on. Typically the blackboards are decorated with coloured chalk pictures drawn on by the pupils and depending on the teacher’s artistic ability, colorful Christmas art and embellishments adorn the walls. The day of the program, school dismisses early. The younger pupils go home while the teacher and older pupils make the final preparations. Desks are carried to the basement and the schoolhouse is filled with the backless wooden benches used for church services. With everything finally ready, the

teacher and pupils head home to eat and dress for the special occasion. The evening of the program, the neighborhood begins arriving at the schoolhouse. Among the crowd there may be grandparents, married siblings from other neighborhoods, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends of all ages. There is an air of anticipation… The pupils, feeling perhaps both rather nervous and excited, place their gifts in the classroom and huddle together while the audience is seated. Standing-room-only audiences are the norm. Once the crowd is seated all but one or two of the gaslights

are turned off. Typically, one or two lights are left on, with tinfoil around the light-globe making a reflector to create a “spotlight” on the stage. For the next few hours, the audience will watch the program. The children sing Christmas Carols, recite their poems, perform their plays and activities. There may be a few tears wiped away at the more sentimental or touching pieces counterbalanced by laughter at the more comical parts. Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas trees, and Frosty the snowman

are conspicuously absent, with the emphasis being on Christ’s birth and the joy of gathering with loved ones and the joyful reminiscence of childhood Christmases. There are typically some glitches, but those are met with gentle humor on the part of the audience. From a teacher’s perspective, there is no other time the teacher and pupils feel so close or connected and it can be quite the event for the teacher to watch

his or her pupils presenting the program everyone worked so hard to prepare. As the program draws to its conclusion, a wave of applause resounds in the schoolhouse followed by happy smiles and sighs of relief from the “actors.” Now comes the gift exchange – all the weeks of secrecy and angling for clues, the buying, hiding, and wrapping of gifts are about to come to an end. The teacher may

ask others to help pass out the gifts and once each child has their gift, the teacher nods and signals they may open their parcels. The excited unwrapping results in a shower of wrapping paper and sparkling eyes and happy gasps as the pupils discover what was inside. Once the initial excitement is over, the children take turns to hold up their gifts and show the audience what was received and to thank the giver. Before the children are dismissed

to dash about with their treasures, the teacher opens the gift or gifts given by the whole school. This is often a substantial gift purchased by the schoolboard with donations given by the school families. At most programs, snacks and beverages are offered and people visit with one another for a while before collecting their children and gifts and bundling up for the chilly trip towards home. Another program is past… The schoolboard members and their wives usually help carry the desks back upstairs, pick up the trash and to restore some semblance of order, but the next day or so will see busy teachers getting the classroom back in order, cleaning up, and getting the various “props” ready to be sent home once again. The program will be a topic of discussion for a while to come and
