The Future of the Dixon
from 2018 Annual Report
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens has just experienced the most extraordinary two-year interval in the institution’s history. We have seen the Dixon largely transformed by three major capital projects—the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building, the learning gardens that will surround that new facility, and the Bowlin Stage renovation. What’s more, all three projects are either fully funded or very close to it. We of course have our exceptionally generous donors to thank, but there is no question that the brilliance of the Dixon’s performance in 2017 and 2018 is also due to the leadership of our Board Chair, C. Penn Owen III. I know I speak for all of the Dixon Board of Trustees when I say how grateful I am for Penn’s dedication and hard work during his tenure as Chair.
I would be remiss if I did not also extend my thanks to Kevin Sharp and the Dixon staff. Just as they continued to produce a full calendar of programs and events while the museum facility was under renovation in 2015, they have maintained equal energy and productivity during the 2017 planning phase and the 2018 construction of our capital projects. Their focus and commitment is extraordinary. And now, with more space, greater accessibility, and new resources at their disposal, I can only imagine the great things the Dixon team will accomplish in the years to come.

The beautiful new gardens and the new education building create opportunities for the Dixon, but they also will require greater support. I hope to use my time as Chair of the Dixon Board of Trustees to help deliver an even more sustainable institution. I know we can further grow the membership, broaden the donor base, increase the audience, and make the Dixon a valued part of every Memphian’s life. But I will need your help to do it.
I am honored to Chair the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2019 and 2020, and I look forward to working with you. Thank you.
