analysis

Shopping Approx 10 mins

Results from a Traffic Survey (Speed and Volume) Speed and vehicle volume counts were carried out in early-mid December 2010 at four points around the neighbourhood. Below is a sample of the data, which highlights the problem of speeding traffic and rat running. As a general rule, due to the residential nature of the area, any speeds over 21 mph could be considered excessive and potentially dangerous.

Langham Road Between the hours of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm (total of four hours):

personal injury collisions (last five years)

monitoring locations for traffic survey

you told us your vision for your neighbourhood (9th October)

Carlingford Road Between the hours of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm (total of four hours):

A total of 425 vehicles travelled along Langham Road (total in both directions)

A total of 292 vehicles travelled along Carlingford Road (total in both directions)

75 vehicles were travelling over 31 mph 56 vehicles were travelling between 31-35 mph 14 vehicles travelling between 36-40 mph 4 vehicles travelling over 41 mph

142 vehicles were travelling over 21 mph 2 vehicles were travelling between 31-35 mph 1 vehicle was travelling over 36 mph

Mannock Road

Stanmore Road

A total of 892 vehicles travelled along Mannock Road (total in both directions)

Between the hours of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm (total of four hours):

245 vehicles were travelling over 21 mph* 1 vehicle was travelling between 31-35 mph

A total of 838 vehicles travelled along Stanmore Road (total in both directions)

*It is worth noting that the count was taken right at the bend on Mannock Road (before the traffic island) where it turns into Downhills Park Road.

671 vehicles were traveling over 21 mph 70 vehicles were travelling between 31-35 mph 12 vehicles travelling between 36-40 mph 3 vehicles travelling over 41 mph

3 vehicles travelling over 41 mph

plan

we then worked up a plan together to address your objectives (9th October & 23rd October)

‘the knuckle’

junction treatments

You said:

We propose treatments to encourage vehicles to turn corners more carefully.

• important link to public transport, schools and open space • it feels unsafe • vehicles travelled too fast on Mannock Road We propose:

‘gateways’

• a raised table over the junction with Mannock Road so as to slow traffic and make walking and cycling easier. • improvements to the green space to create a better community area, making it more active and therefore feel safer.

New treatments to signal entry into a residential area where drivers should be respectful

Access You decided that we should not restrict vehicle access but ‘calm’ traffic and reclaim the street space (13th November).

the ‘wishbone’ You said: • very wide junction makes it difficult to cross for pedestrians • gateway location - Sets the ‘tone’ for the neighbourhood. • area has a ‘leafy’ feel because of large mature trees in this location We propose: • a new junction space which will reduce the width of the carriageways to slow traffic and make crossing easier

This project is You now have the opportunity to go further. about you Is there an element of the project that you want to lead on or support?

You asked for something to be done.

There are many parts that go into making the whole. The following are just a few examples.

You have highlighted the problems. You have proposed some solutions.

What do you think?

You now have the opportunity to go further.

The pattern is intended to create ‘controlled uncertainty’ by making drivers feel less like they have priority. Hopefully they will be encouraged to share the space with pedestrians. Also, ‘in laid’ setts (cobbles) provide additional ‘rumble’ effect for cars and encourage slower speeds.
