American Saroughs were produced in North/West Iran until about 1920. The customized carpets were made for American clients. For their production, only vegetable dyes and premium-quality wool were used. Thanks to their harmonic colors and patterns, the carpets ideally match with modern interiors without appearing fashionable only.

The Central Persian Highlands is amongst the earliest cradles of advanced civilizations. The age of the settlements in the oasis of Kaschan cannot be defined. Still ongoing excavations in Tappe Sialk in the municipal area of Kaschan revealed buildings dating back to the 6th millennium BC, with the earliest evidence for extractive metallurgy dating back to the 4th millennium, proto-elamite tablets, cylinder seals, and pottery dating back to the 3rd millennium, as well as one of four Elamite ziggurats. In the 11th century, the Seldjuq sultan Malik Schah I. had a fortress built in the center of Kaschan - its walls (Qal‘e-ye ǧalālī) exist to the present day.

Size, color design, and pattern of this Lavar, being woven around 1940, are most extraordinary. Its overall design is clearly divided into four sections, separated from each other by colors (medallion, bright and dark-colored edging, as well as a green bordure). The entire center is traversed by flowers, leafs, and twines. Due to its light blue color, the rhombic medallion (1650) constitutes this carpet‘s central point. The medallion is encompassed by a bright field, which again is surrounded by a dark blue field. The bordure is characterized by palmettes and roses, which perfectly match with the green background.

Kerman has a long tradition, and was known to the ancient Greeks as Karamani. Ptolemy and Ammianus Marcellinus mention the country named as Carmania. Possibly, the city was founded by Sassanian king Ardaschir I. in the third century. Back then, the city was called Ardasheer Khoreh. The Arabs called it Bardeseer or Bardesheer, and to Persians it is also known as Guasheer. Kerman was a traditional center for the production of Persian carpets. The to date most expensive Islamic artwork was sold at an auction held by Christie‘s in London in 2010. It is a four meter high Kerman carpet from the 17th century. Its hammer price amounted to 5.5 million pounds.

Sarouk (also Saruk or Sarough) rugs are those woven in the village of Saruk and also the city of Arak, Iran and the surrounding countryside. Sarouk rugs have been produced for much of the last century. The early successes of the Sarouk rug are largely owed to the American market. From the 1910s to 1950s, the “American Sarouk” also known as the “Painted Sarouk” was produced. Sarouk rugs continue to be produced today, using the same methods as during early production – with the exception of the post-production dye job. Known for their exceptional quality and ability to withstand decades of wear, Sarouks continue to be a best seller of the Persian rugs. They are made with a high quality, tough wool using a Persian knot. A tell tale sign of a Sarouk is usually its blue weft threads, salmon or tomato-red color mixed with ivory and blues, and a very traditional, floral style. The finest of the modern Sarouk rugs comes from the small town of Ghiassabad.

Senneh 4.34 x 3.44 143819NZW

Senneh is located in North/East Iran, and is part of Kurdistan. Carpets from Senneh differ from the usually slightly more unsubtle Kurdish carpets with respect to their pattern and concinnity. This distinction most likely evolved back at the time when „Shah Nadir“ made Senneh the Kurdish capitol, and deployed his own royal household and weavers.

This oversized carpet is unique commissioned work, produced in a specifically built long and high hall. In order to enable the production of carpets of suchlike dimensions, weaving looms, nearly three times as high as usual, were used. Its weaving was performed by applying a distinct Old Persian method for handling oversized carpets - the so called wave weaving technique. Specifically for this carpet, the wool of certain sheep, living in a climatically ideal region, was used. The appropriate location was found in Georgio, a small town near Bucharest. Not before the sheep had grown, a sufficient supply of wool was obtained, allowing for the beginning of production. In the course of their breeding, utmost attention was paid to keeping consistent feeding and stabling conditions, in order to ensure uniform quality of the wool. The weaving time extended over 7 years. In order to realize a perfectly consistent knotting appearance, experienced weavers were engaged over the entire make span, earning outstandingly high wages. Excerpt from the certificate, issued by Mr. Peter Renz on 08/14/2003
