Ideas on how to prepare your kids before they leave for summer camp ith the seasons changing, parents are getting their kids ready for summer camp. It’s safe to say that camps are not what they used to be; parents today might reminisce about camping out, taking part in outdoor activities and giving the camp counselor fits all summer long. In this day and age, there are numerous camps for all different sports and age levels in the Atlanta area and parents have to be diligent about choosing the right camp for their kids. Here are a couple of things to take into account when you get your child ready for camp this spring and summer.

W

PREPARE WISELY … There are always unique challenges associated with sending your children to a sleepaway camp for an extended period of time. Kids today know how to do many things

on their own, such as working a DVR or surfing the internet. But when it comes down to it, there are many things that young kids don’t know about living on their own for a short period of time and, as a parent, you have to be sure to prepare your kids for anything that can and will happen during their stay. One of the most important things to teach your child is to make sure they know how to call home if anything happens. Many camps don’t allow cell phone use during activities, so make sure that the child has a calling card and knows how to use it. Or if the calling card is not a good option, calling collect is another way to keep contact with family members if cell phone use is prohibited. Laundry is another important task that campers should be able to do. If your child is away for a few weeks, you may want to pack

extra clothes and laundry detergent just in case they need clean clothes for the latter part of the camp. Also, knowing how to make a bed is a vital skill; a clean bed makes for a good night’s sleep. Eating right also helps a camper to be more energized and more focused during his or her stay. Eating bad food consistently can cause headaches and sugar highs. Parents should also make sure their camper is able to maintain good personal hygiene away from home.

FACT AND FICTION … There is a lot of information out there on all sorts of camps, and parents may have misgivings about sending their children to certain programs — or even if they should send their children to summer camp at all. One thing to keep in mind is that the

summer camp experience doesn’t have to break the bank, even in this economy. In fact, there is a camp out there that can fit every budget. There are also camps that allow you to apply early and get a great deal, sometimes getting as much as a 50 percent discount. One would think that having a friend there with them would make the camp experience easier, but in fact the opposite could be true; your child may be hindered in trying new activities or meeting new friends. Those are just a few things to watch for before sending “Junior” to camp. The summer is loaded with so many opportunities and activities for your child, and this camp guide should help you choose the right one. Good luck, and may your child have a safe camping experience! Get In The Game! Dynamo Swim School offers the highest quality swimming lesson in the metro Atlanta area. Instruction focuses on both learning to swim and teaching aquatic safety lessons to the entire family. Every student is provided with a personal record book. The personal record book is a communication tool for the student, instructor and parent. At the end of each class, the instructor marks off the skills accomplished and the student shows the parents. This allows open communication between the instructor and parent and offers opportunity for the parent to ask questions and the instructor to provide tips. The personal record book remains part of the student’s swimming record at each facility until he or she “graduates”. Over 75 percent of our customers are repeat customers and many graduates go on to compete for their summer league teams, Dynamo Swim Club and become neighborhood lifeguards, swim instructors and swim coaches. For more information go to www.dynamoswimschool.com.

Lacrosse was once played primarily around the northeastern United States. Lacrosse is now the fastest growing sport in the country with the southeast, and especially Georgia, being a focal point for this growth. Every year there are more high school teams at both the boys and girls level and more club teams and summer camps. One of the best camps around is Trilogy Lacrosse, which was founded by Ryan Boyle, a four-time All-American and member of the 2004 National Champion team at Princeton. Trilogy is designed to teach the fundamentals of the game but also to teach the value of team competition. At Trilogy you will learn to not only be a better lacrosse player, but a better team player as well. Ryan Boyle advises parents: when looking for a lacrosse camp, seek a camp that stresses proper fundamental play, innovative individual skill development and team strategy. While played by individuals, lacrosse is a team sport and Trilogy Lacrosse utilizes an individual and group team philosophy that leads to a team-first attitude. Most of all Ryan emphasizes selecting a camp where your child will have fun, because to excel in any sport you must enjoy it and have fun doing it. To learn more visit www.trilogylacrosse.com.
