Atlanta Falcons (8-2)

vs.

green bay packers (7-3)

By Jay Adams, AtlantaFalcons.com managing editor Falcons defense vs. Aaron Rodgers Rodgers has come a long way since being that lonely face left in the green room during the 2005 NFL Draft. Each year, Rodgers continues to get better and better, and the Packers’ offense has really found a groove with him under center. Along with being a dynamic threat in the passing game, Rodgers knows how to manage a game. That means the Falcons will have to get off the field on third downs and put the ball back into the hands of the Atlanta offense. The more Rodgers is on the field, the better the chance of him causing some damage with the weapons he has at his disposal.

Roddy White vs. Charles Woodson This is the type of matchup that you love to see: One of the best cornerbacks in the League going up against a wide receiver putting up numbers to be considered the best at his position. White has done it all this season, from saving a game with an amazing defensive play to catching game-winning touchdowns. He has been showing up and showing out every time he steps on the field. Woodson has a knack for shutting those types of receivers down, so while the onus is certainly on him to keep the ball away from White, it’s White’s duty to find whatever Woodson’s weakness is and exploit it as much as he can.

Matt Ryan vs. A.J. Hawk and Clay Matthews This matchup really could pit the entire Falcons offense against the two linebackers, but Ryan is charged with using his physical abilities, decision-making and knowledge of the game to make sure Hawk and Matthews become non-factors. The two linebackers are some of the most dangerous in the NFL, not only rushing the quarterback, but also back in coverage. If the Falcons can find success in the run game, that will set up the play-action, and that’s when Ryan can really keep the two guessing.

Todd McClure vs. B.J. Raji Things don’t get any easier for McClure when he lines up against Raji. McClure has taken on some of the biggest defensive tackles in the NFL this year — from Shaun Rogers to Casey Hampton. The veteran center, however, has been able to keep them from causing too much trouble in the offensive backfield. Raji, at 6-foot-2, 337 pounds, is another big test for McClure. Raji, who played with Ryan at Boston College, will likely be wanting to plant his former teammate on his back a few times and it’s up to McClure to keep that from happening. The running game is also highly dependent on how much success McClure has against Raji. The second-year player takes up a lot of space in the middle, and getting him out of the way to create some lanes for Michael Turner will be crucial to the Falcons’ offensive efficiency.

the Jets can hang on and outpace the Patriots for the AFC East Division crown?

I like the Jets. They have a looseness and a swagger about them that may help them in close games. But I’m not sold on (Mark) Sanchez yet at quarterback. I don’t know what happens if the Jets have to depend on him. So in that sense, I take Brady over Sanchez, almost any day. The Rams have lost four games by four points or less. Do they have what it takes to possibly win the NFC West with games left against Arizona, San Francisco and Seattle?

Not only have the Rams lost four games by four points or less, they squandered a 17-3 lead at Tampa Bay and a late 17-10 lead at San Francisco. This team is markedly improved in Steve Spagnuolo’s second season as head coach without a lot of major personnel changes -- other than at the quarterback position. An 8-8 record could win the West this year, but until the Rams show they can win a game or two or three on the road, it’s hard to take them as serious contenders. Even in the West. The Rams have lost all four road games this season. By Jim Thomas NFL Writer/St.Louis Post-Dispatch What are your thoughts on the Falcons through 10 weeks of the season?

It has been very impressive watching the Falcons under head coach Mike Smith. He has brought some consistency to a franchise that has been a model of inconsistency (in terms of winning records). And judging by the personnel acquisitions in the recent years, Smith and the front office must be on the same page. There’s no doubt the Falcons have one of the league’s most productive offenses. The New York Jets seemingly make a few plays late in the game to pull out victories. Do you think

2010 Atlanta Falcons

What’s going on in Dallas? The left-for-dead Cowboys rolled in the new Meadowlands and steamrolled the New York Giants. Was that just a blip or do you think the Cowboys are good enough to make a late season run?

Midseason coaching changes usually gets a team’s attention. And often, it can lead to short-term improvement. But usually that wears off in a few weeks, and the team comes back to reality. We’ll see what happens in Dallas, but I believe they are spoilers at best the rest of the way and certainly not a playoff contender.

“Thomas and Mike work closely and very well together,” Blank said. “The Falcons are fortunate in that regard; these two men may not always have the same views, but they share a common vision of success for our club. Combined with Rich McKay, who provides strong support to Thomas and Smitty and leads our front office operations, we have a very strong leadership team that is second to none in the league.”

COMMITMENT TO FANS

W

hen the scoreboard clock expired at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on January 3, 2010, the city of Atlanta and the Falcons organization breathed a collective sigh of relief. The Falcons entered the final game of the 2009 season needing to defeat NFC South Division rival Tampa Bay to record back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. Employing a stingy defense that limited the Buccaneers to just 40 yards rushing, and ramping up its own punishing run game, the Falcons defeated Tampa Bay 20-10. A milestone – one that had eluded the franchise for 44 years – had finally come to fruition, and no one was more happy about this development than Falcons Owner & CEO Arthur Blank. “The way our coaches and players finished the season, with three straight wins, says a lot about the character and resolve of our team,” Blank said. “With our playoff hopes already dashed, this team fought hard to prove it is a strong contender in the NFL. It was a great moment for our franchise and our fans, and we’re looking forward to many more exciting moments in the coming years.” This major accomplishment was but a small step in the larger picture for Blank, the passionate, high-profile owner who has not wavered from his ultimate goal and vision for the Atlanta Falcons: a Super Bowl championship for the city of Atlanta. Blank, who has continued to raise the bar and level of expectations for the Falcons, has constructed a talented and creative team to lead his club both on and off the field, beginning with the Falcons’ general manager, head coach, and club president.

2010 Atlanta Falcons

Whether it’s The Home Depot – the company Blank co-founded and led until his retirement as co-chairman in 2001 – or the Atlanta Falcons, Blank has always subscribed to one simple theory: Listening is what matters most. Customers, fans, players, coaches or associates – Blank listens, understands and responds to all of them and expects his associates to do the same. “In today’s challenging economy, we need to find creative ways to improve the total game-day experience for our fans,” said Blank. “Coupled with increasing competition from home technology, amenities and comforts, it’s critical that we provide value and offer everything our fans need from the time they leave their driveway to the time they arrive in ours.” Following a three-year, $53 million investment in enhancements inside and outside the Georgia Dome, which was funded by the Falcons and Georgia World Congress Center Authority, Falcons fans are enjoying new amenities that improve the game day experience. Located at each end of the field, new high-definition video boards offer sharper images, enhanced graphics, game viewing options and replay capabilities. From suite and club seat renovations, to the addition of super suites, LED ribbon boards, and exterior paint and interior seating in red and black, the Georgia Dome now has the look and feel of the “home of the Falcons.” “It’s important to maintain the Georgia Dome to NFL standards for our fans,” Blank said. “Atlanta is a worldclass city with world-class NFL fans who deserve the best the NFL has to offer.” Led by McKay, the Falcons are also looking to the future and the prospects of an iconic NFL stadium for the longterm benefit of the city. “The termination of our lease at the Dome is a few years in front of us, but we believe it’s prudent to begin the process of exploring new options now,” Blank said. “The Georgia World Congress Center Authority has been and continues to be a strong partner in this regard.”

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

One of the hallmarks of Blank’s philosophy is giving back to the community. During his tenure with The Home Depot, the company donated more than $113 million to the communities it served. In addition, associates provided hundreds of thousands of hours of personal volunteer time. Similarly, the Falcons’ organization lends its support all over the state of Georgia. One vehicle of the Falcons’ community outreach efforts is the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation. Since 2002, the foundation has awarded more than $16 million in grants to more than 700 nonprofit organizations. The centerpiece of the foundation’s work is the Falcons Fitness Zones signature program, which focuses on shaping the lives of Georgia youth through outdoor activities and fitness. In addition, Atlanta Falcons players, coaches, cheerleaders and associates remain among the most active community citizens in the NFL, contributing an average of 3,000 hours of their collective personal time each season supporting a wide variety of community needs. Blank is also dedicated to his personal giving back. He is Chairman of The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation which, along with his and his wife Stephanie’s personal giving, has granted and committed more than $260 million to numerous non-profit organizations.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

A native of Flushing, N.Y., Blank attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, where he competed on the football, baseball and track teams. He received a B.S. Degree in Business Administration with Distinction from Babson College. He co-founded The Home Depot in 1978 and retired from the company as Co-Chairman in 2001. At the time of his retirement, The Home Depot was a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and one of Fortune magazine’s “Global Most Admired Companies.” During Blank’s last year as CEO of the company, The Home Depot ranked first in social responsibility in an annual survey conducted by Harris Interactive, Inc. Blank is recognized throughout the country for his personal and professional achievements. In 2010, Blank was recognized by the Council for Quality Growth for his philanthropic endeavors and his significant contributions to economic development and quality of life, and by the PAGE Foundation, along with Stephanie, for demonstrating commitment to improving public education in Georgia. In 2008, he received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of South Carolina-Bluffton.

In 2006, Blank was named a Distinguished American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame, and awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from Furman University. In 2005, he was named National Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young. In 2003, for the second time in three years, Blank was named Georgia’s Most Respected CEO by Georgia Trend magazine, and in 2002 he was inducted into Georgia State University’s Business Hall of Fame. Blank serves on a number of boards including: Outward Bound USA; the Board of Trustees of The Carter Center, Inc.; the Board of Trustees of Emory University; the Board of Trustees of The Cooper Institute; and the boards of Cox Enterprises, Inc., and Staples, Inc. Blank also served as the 2003 Chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Blank has six children and three grandchildren. He and Stephanie and their three youngest children live in Atlanta. A strong believer in work-life balance, Blank still makes time daily for working out and spending time with his family.

Division title in 2004, only the club’s third division crown in franchise history, and a NFC Championship Game appearance (2004) for only the second time in team history. He recorded his 100th career regular season victory as an NFL General Manager in 2005 when the Falcons defeated the Detroit Lions 27–7 on Thanksgiving Day before a nationally televised audience at Ford Field. The 2004 Falcons rolled to a 4–0 start in route to an 11-5 record and earned the conference’s second seed in the playoffs, a first-round bye, and a nationally televised home game against the St. Louis Rams and their highoctane offense.

R

ich McKay begins his seventh season as team President handling all business operations of the club including Finance, Marketing, Ticket Sales, Football Communications, Retail, Human Resources, and Community Relations. Additionally, McKay remains heavily involved with Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff in running the club’s salary cap and contract negotiations and continues to work with Falcons Owner & CEO Arthur M. Blank on the pursuit of a new stadium as the club nears the expiration of its lease term at the Georgia Dome. McKay’s contributions not only to the Falcons but to the entire NFL as well are visible on a daily basis with his participation on a wide range of League committees that assist in maintaining the NFL’s current level of success and stature. Accordingly, McKay will continue as the Falcons’ liaison with the NFL office in New York City regarding all football and business-related matters. It was McKay’s vision and leadership that helped successfully navigate the smooth transition before the start of the 2008 season when the Falcons hired Head Coach Mike Smith and General Manager Thomas Dimitroff. The Falcons went on to post an 11-5 record and garnered their first postseason berth since 2004. McKay has overseen the completion of the Georgia Dome renovations, which, in partnership with the Georgia World Congress Center was a three-year, $53 million project. Prior to embarking on his new role as team President, McKay served in a dual role as Falcons President & General Manager from 2004-07. One of the many proud moments during his successful tenure in Atlanta includes helping the Falcons lay claim to an NFC South

Before joining the Falcons organization in 2004, McKay recorded a nine-year run as chief architect of football operations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He constructed Buccaneer teams that won better than 60 percent of their games during his tenure and was the chief football executive of the franchise altering 1995 draft which ESPN has named one of the Top 10 draft classes in NFL history. To further place into perspective the success McKay has enjoyed during what has been a sparkling NFL career, one only needs to review the 10-year record the Buccaneers had before he took over as General Manager. From 1985 to 1994, Tampa Bay compiled a record of 43–116, a paltry .270 winning percentage, including 10 consecutive double-digit losing seasons. The apex of McKay’s distinguished NFL career to date took place in sunny San Diego, California on January 26, 2003 when he completed the overhaul of the Buccaneers, long considered one of the worst franchises in professional sports. Tampa Bay’s 48–21 victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII vaulted the Buccaneers from the basement of professional sports to the top of the NFL universe thanks to McKay’s handiwork. In his 13 seasons as an NFL General Manager, McKay directed six teams that reached the NFC playoffs, three that reached the NFC Championship Game and one team that won a Super Bowl title. McKay also worked with three different coaches who guided their respective teams to the NFC Championship Game (Tony Dungy 1999; Jon Gruden 2002; and Jim Mora 2004). His overall record was 112–96 with a playoff mark of 6–5. McKay was the 2005 recipient of the Jack Horrigan Award, which is presented annually by the Pro Football Writers of America to the club or league office executive who is the most helpful and cooperative with the local and national news media that cover the NFL.

Offensive Rookie of the Year, starting left tackle Sam Baker, starting middle linebacker and All-NFL rookie selection, Curtis Lofton, and eventual starting free safety Thomas DeCoud. His adept choices also included solid contributors in wide receiver Harry Douglas, defensive end Kroy Biermann and nickel corner Chevis Jackson. When Dimitroff went looking for another target for Ryan and the Falcons offense to improve their efficiency, he traded for future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs on eve of the 2009 draft. Gonzalez delivered in a big way with 83 receptions, secondbest on team, and six touchdowns, including the game winner at the New York Jets on fourth down with 1:38 remaining.

T

he 2009 Atlanta Falcons capped off its first back-to-back winning seasons in the history of the franchise with a 20-10 victory at Tampa Bay in the season finale. For long-time Falcons fans, this was quite a monumental feat. Although an impressive accomplishment in just his first two years on the job, for the architect behind the transformation of the new look Falcons, it was not enough. Thomas Dimitroff strives for so much more. That inherent, tireless drive is one of the main reasons why the Falcons General Manager has been so successful throughout his 20-plus years in the NFL. A product of the championship producing ways in New England, Dimitroff is all about building a winner who is able to compete at the highest level each and every season. Every move Dimitroff makes is calculated and forwardthinking with one goal in mind. Assembling the best football team he can is paramount in his daily thought process and he’s aggressively determined to get the Falcons to the next level. In each season since ascending to the General Managers post in Atlanta, Dimitroff has astutely engineered key moves and deftly drafted a solid nucleus of players to augment the Falcons roster. In 2008, Dimitroff’s first move was signing talented free agent running back Michael Turner from San Diego. Turner fittingly exploded onto the scene as a full-time starter for the first time in his career, finishing with 1,699 rushing yards with a club record 17 touchdowns on his way to his first Pro Bowl while finishing second in MVP voting. Dimitroff’s initial ‘08 draft was a windfall, deliveringfranchise quarterback Matt Ryan, the consensus NFL

Dimitroff’s belief that the NFL draft is a major building block to establish a team’s foundation for years to come has been the impetus for the Falcons’ winning turnaround since 2008. His first two drafts have reaped huge benefits as 10 out of 19 picks have started at least one game and 18 rookies have been active on game day since 2008. Six rookies have started on opening day from the first two draft classes under Dimitroff. As further evidence that Dimitroff and his hard working personnel staff are continuously selecting quality NFL talent with each draft, an impressive 27 rookies who have competed at Falcons training camps from 2008-09 have ended up on NFL rosters over the last two seasons. Part of Dimitroff’s master plan also includes adding other veterans when needed to shore up his units. With an eye towards improving a young Falcons secondary, Dimitroff targeted and signed productive five-year veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson from the Houston Texans early this year during free agency. An Athens, Georgia native, Robinson brings a veteran presence and a stalwart reputation back home with him to his new landing spot in the NFC South. All of those major moves prove Dimitroff will do whatever it takes to make the Falcons roster better whenever he sees the opportunity. His timely maneuvers have helped the Falcons post a notable 20 victories over the past two seasons. Dimitroff directs all aspects of football operations with the Falcons and working with Head Coach Mike Smith has final authority over all personnel decisions related to the signing of free agents, the selection of players in the draft, trades, and related decisions. He also handles coordinating other football-related activities with Coach Smith.

to quarter and play to play. Smith is building a team that will consistently “be in the hunt” every year. This winning formula has seen Smith post a 20-12 regular season record (.625) in two seasons, which is tied for the fourthmost wins in the NFL over that time period. His .625 winning percentage ranks second (to only Dan Reeves’ .656) among all Falcons head coaches after two seasons. Smith’s 13 victories at home since 2008 (against just three defeats) is the most by a Falcons head coach in their first two years on the job. And those 13 home wins are tied for the second-best mark in the entire NFL. In the case of his 2009 Falcons, sustainability was witnessed in the form of Smith’s team being steadfastly unyielding in the face of adversity and rising up to fight through various challenges to finish the season with a winning record.

U

nder the direction of Head Coach Mike Smith, the Atlanta Falcons finished the 2009 campaign strong with three-consecutive victories, including two wins on the road, to close out their season with a winning record at 9-7. The three-straight wins to finish the season were a testament to the coaching prowess and staunch leadership skills of Smith in his second season firmly entrenched at the Falcons helm. The hard driving Smith would not let his team lose focus in the final three weeks of the season despite the fact that the postseason was out of reach. With a winning record in their sights and the possibility of posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in the history of the franchise, Smith stayed true to his personal coaching script that has achieved success at every level of his coaching tenure. The three-game winning streak at the end of the year secured the first consecutive winning seasons in team history. In addition, Coach Smith pointed out to his team that the victory at Tampa Bay (on January 3, 2010) was the first win of 2010 and it will be used it as a positive springboard moving forward. Smith’s 2009 team endured the fourth-toughest schedule in the NFL as five of the team’s seven losses came against playoff teams and the other two were against teams that ended up with 8-8 records. Smith lost nine key starters for at least one game because of injury (and a total of 45 games of missed action overall.) But don’t ask Smith to use those factors as excuses. That’s just not in his DNA. One of Smith’s basic coaching philosophies centers on his team displaying sustainability. He wants his Falcons to be able to maintain a certain level of performance, not just each season, but from game to game, quarter

2010 Atlanta Falcons

Starting fast and finishing strong has been a staple of Smith’s teams during his time in Atlanta. This disciplined approach has seen desired outcomes in the form of the Falcons posting an 18-1 mark in games where the birds hold the lead at halftime and the same record when leading at the start of the fourth quarter. The Falcons are also 17-6 in games where they score first under Smith’s strong influence. With Smith’s determined leadership in 2008, the Falcons enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds that the NFL has ever witnessed. The seven-win swing going from 4-12 to 11-5 is tied for the fourth-best mark (at +7 wins) in the league for a rookie head coach since 1978. Smith’s 11 victories are tied for the top mark with five other head coaches for the best record for a rookie head coach taking over a team that finished below .500 the previous season. And only three rookie head coaches in NFL history had more wins in their first campaign on the sidelines than Smith. For his coaching efforts, Smith earned the prestigious Associated Press and Sporting News 2008 NFL Coach of the Year honors, as well as NFC Coach of the Year by the respected KC 101 Club. Smith boasts a strong coaching background that includes 11 NFL seasons and 28 total years in football. His defensive track record has witnessed a remarkable amount of success as he helped guide the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl XXXV Championship in 2000 as a defensive assistant coach and led the Jacksonville Jaguars defense to top 10 rankings in several categories (overall defense, points allowed and rushing defense) during his time as the club’s Defensive Coordinator. With Smith’s help, the Jaguars had the sixth-most wins in the NFL (from 2004-07) with 40 victories.

The Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor pays tribute to retired players who made significant contributions to the organization during their playing careers. During the 2003 season, long– time Falcons season–ticket holders nominated a group of players they would like to see inducted into the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor. The nine players receiving the highest number of nominations were then placed on a ballot for Falcons fans to cast their votes. The inaugural winners were QB Steve Bartkowski, LB Tommy Nobis, LB Jessie Tuggle and RB William Andrews. In 2006, a local media contingent nominated four players; DE Claude Humphrey, T Mike Kenn, RB Gerald

Riggs and C Jeff Van Note for induction into the Ring of Honor. Falcons fans then voted and elected C Jeff Van Note as the fifth member of this exclusive club. On October 1, 2006, Van Note was honored at the Georgia Dome with a special halftime ceremony as his likeness was raised to rooftops with the original four members. In its latest Ring of Honor vote in 2008, defensive end Claude Humphrey and offensive tackle Mike Kenn became the sixth and seventh members to be hoisted in the Georgia Dome rafters.

The Falcons selected Bartkowski (1975–85) as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 1975 out of California. He was named the NFL’s Rookie of the Year after throwing for 1,662 yards and 15 touchdowns. Bartkowski overcame numerous knee injuries to set every club record in passing, which included 23,468 yards and 154 touchdown passes in his 123 Falcons games. He produced three seasons of 3,000 yards or more passing, 12 games of more than 300 yards passing, and two seasons of 30 or more touchdown passes. Nobis (1966–76) was the first player ever drafted by the Falcons in 1966. Later that year, he became the first Falcons player to be voted to the Pro Bowl in a season that also included Rookie of the Year honors. Nobis would go on to lead the Falcons in tackles in nine of 11 seasons. A five– time Pro Bowl selection, Nobis also intercepted 11 passes during his pro career, returning two of them for touchdowns Nicknamed “The Hammer” for the vicious way in which he pounded ball carriers, Tuggle (1987–2000) would go on to become the Falcons’ career leader in tackles with 2,065 during his illustrious 209–game career. A five–time Pro Bowl selection, Tuggle finished his career third on the team’s all time lists in most seasons played (14), most games played (209) and started (189), fourth in most consecutive games played (110) and seventh in most consecutive games started (89). Tuggle led the Falcons in tackles for nine straight seasons from 1988–97 and recorded more than 100 tackles for a team record 12 consecutive seasons. The Maturation of a Franchise Quarterback By Amy Juron From the second Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan stepped onto the field for his career debut in the 2008 season, he has proven his legitimacy as an elite quarterback in this League. Ryan’s first career pass was a 62-yard touchdown to wide receiver Michael Jenkins.

In his first two seasons leading the Falcons, Ryan posted 6,356 passing yards, ranking third in Falcons history for the most passing yards in any two seasons combined. He currently boasts the highest completion percentage in franchise history (60.7 percent).

In 2008, Ryan became the first rookie quarterback in Falcons history to start all 16 games, record 11 wins, and lead his team to the playoffs.

In his third season at the helm, the 25-year-old signal caller has continued to amaze everyone around him, including his teammates and coach-

es. His work ethic and dedication to the game are unquestioned. On Ryan’s off days, he can be found at the practice facility putting in extra work to get that much better. “My Tuesdays are down to a science now, ” Ryan said when asked about his routine for his day off and how he has improved upon it throughout his three seasons. “I work out at a certain time, get in the cold tub, get stretched out, go upstairs with the coaches, watch film, go back upstairs and talk to them about plays, relax for a little bit, and then get the game plan faxed over to me at night. It’s gotten a lot more efficient and productive.” The young quarterback is on pace to have a season worthy of the record books. Ryan has already thrown for an impressive 2,518 yards through the first 10 games of the 2010 season. With his fast and furious start, Ryan is on pace to throw for an impressive 4,026 yards and could come close to having 400 completions. The poised quarterback has thrown for 18 touchdowns and has only been picked off five times this season. Ryan’s five interceptions are tied for the second fewest among quarterbacks who have started all of their games in 2010. “There is a time and a place for everything, “ said Ryan about his decision making through 10 games. “That is another area where this year we have been better than the previous two. It’s

With his fast and furious start, Ryan is on pace to throw for an impressive 4,026 yards and could come close to having 400 completions. about knowing when to make certain throws and plays.” It is a known fact that the turnover margin is crucial in winning football games and Ryan definitely agrees. “We can win because we protect the football and remain aggressive,” said Ryan. Preparation and dedication lead to confidence and production and that has been shown through Ryan’s performance so far this season. “Ball security is about habits, game day is not for being worried about ball security. It’s one of the reasons we’ve been effective, ” said the former Boston College product.

To be an elite quarterback in this League it is no secret that the key is to be calm under pressure, especially in tight games. Ryan has arguably become the poster boy for fourth quarter (or overtime) comeback victories with the 11 game winning drives he has engineered since 2008. Ryan also knows how to come through in clutch situations, which tend to come on important third down plays. This season, Ryan has recorded a 98.7 quarterback rating

on third downs with a 63.2 completion percentage. Matt Ryan has compiled a 28-12 record as a starter in the NFL for a winning percentage of nearly 70 percent. (His winning percentage is even higher in games played in domes.) If Ryan’s first 40 games in a Falcons uniform are any indication of what’s to come, Falcons fans should be excited and feel confident of what the future may hold for their franchise quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons uniform history has evolved over the years to include many versions from the original uniforms of 1966. In that inaugural campaign of ’66, the team started with red helmets, black jerseys and white pants at home games. Some minor alterations to the home jersey took place over a two-year span from 1968-70. But the first significant change to the uniform didn’t occur until 1971 when the club switched to red jerseys for the home crowd. The next new phase included adding silver pants to those jerseys in 1978. The red jersey would remain for 19 seasons through 1989. To commemorate their 25th anniversary in 1990, the Falcons radically changed their uniform back to black jerseys with an accompanying black helmet for the first time. This look would stay intact until the 2003 season. Under Owner & CEO Arthur Blank the birds completed a huge makeover by changing their logo to a “more powerful, aggressive Falcon” for that ’03 campaign. It was the first major logo change in team history. A new style black jersey with white pants also made an appearance on players during home games in 2003. In 2004, the Falcons announced another change through the help of their fans. Through an outpouring of fan generated support there was strong

sentiment for the return to the red jerseys. The Falcons organization listened and responded to their fan base as they moved back to a red jersey (with a similar style as the black jerseys). Last season, the club created a “throwback uniform” as their alternate uny and wore it for two games. The throwback look was the original 1966 uniforms and members of that first team were invited back for alumni weekend and recognized on the field at halftime. The Falcons will continue to wear these throwback uniforms for two games in 2010.

Black jerseys with white numbers and red trim at home with a white Falcon crest on the sleeves. The away jersey was white with black numbers trimmed in red and a black Falcon crest on the sleeves. The Falcons had white pants with a red strip bordered by two black stripes for both home and away games. The helmet was red with a black Falcon crest logo trimmed in white, and there was a black strip trimmed in white and gold down the middle of the helmet.

1968 – 70

2003 – PRESENT

The year 2003 continued to bring about many new changes for the Atlanta Falcons. Perhaps the biggest changes came with the introduction of the team’s new logo and uniforms unveiled over the course of a twomonth period. On March 19, 2003, before a large gathering of media and the entire Falcons organization, the Falcons presented their new logo. “The new Atlanta Falcons logo is fresh, strong and dynamic, and yet appreciates the tradition and history of this franchise,” said Falcons Owner & CEO Arthur Blank. “The new logo depicts a more powerful, aggressive Falcon - one of fast movement. It is also representative of the evolution and direction of our team.” The logo was designed in conjunction with NFL Properties after a lengthy research process, which included conducting focus groups and polls with many fans. In addition, Falcons players, coaches and staff had the opportunity to give their thoughts.

In 1968, the Falcons removed the Falcon crest logo from the sleeves and replaced it with red and white stripes. Also, a red-black-red stripe combination was added to the sleeves.

1971–1989

In 1971, the Falcons switched to red jerseys for the first time and wore them all the way up to the 1989 season. The only other significant change to this uniform was the addition of silver-gray pants in 1978. Also in 1984, the Falcons switched to a black face mask. The home jersey was red with white numbers and black trim with whiteblack-white sleeve stripes. The away jersey was white with red numbers and black trim with red and black stripes on the sleeves. In 1979, the Falcon crest logo was added to the sleeves.

1990–2002

In 1990, the Falcons once again wore black jerseys as they did in their inaugural years. The 1990 season marked Atlanta’s 25th anniversary season in the NFL, and the team wore a commemorative patch on their left shoulder. In addition, the Falcons switched to a black helmet with a black face mask and a white Falcon crest logo. From 1990–2002, the home jersey was black with white numbers trimmed in red with a black Falcon crest logo trimmed in red on the sleeves. The away jersey was white with red numbers trimmed in black with a black Falcon crest logo trimmed in red on the sleeves. The pants were Falcon silver with a black stripe down the middle trimmed in white and red.

The home uniforms consisted of black jerseys and white pants, while the road attire featured white jerseys and white pants. The team also introduced modified versions of the uniforms, which included wearing black jerseys with black pants at home and white jerseys with black pants on the road. The jerseys and pants included red piping down the side, which expand at the knee for a fast, streamlined look. They also have “Falcons” stitched at the neckline in a newly developed font and include a number font that was designed specifically for the Falcons, consisting of a drop shadow for more depth. The black jerseys contained white numbers with red trim, while the white jerseys contained red numbers with black trim. The new Falcons logo appeared on the sleeve of both jerseys on a red background. The helmet remained black, however, it also featured a metallic flack compared to the previous flat black-colored helmet.

2009

The Falcons unveiled throwback uniforms in a Week 2 meeting against the Carolina Panthers to honor the inaugural 1966 team as part of “Alumni Weekend.” Atlanta again donned the retro uniforms in a Week 12 meeting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta won both games with the throwback uniforms.

In 2004, the Falcons announced they would wear red jerseys at home and use the black jerseys as their alternate third jersey. Declared the team’s alternate third jersey in 2003, red jerseys were worn twice in 2003, against the Tennessee Titans on November 23 and again in the Falcons nationally-televised 20–14 overtime win against the Carolina Panthers on December 7. GEORGIA DOME (1992–present) Falcons Home Record: 74–54–0 In 1992, the Atlanta Falcons and the state of Georgia unveiled the Georgia Dome. The Georgia Dome is the culmination of efforts which began in earnest in June of 1984 as business, civic and governmental leaders gathered to discuss a new stadium in Atlanta. The project continued to gain steam in January of 1988 as a “consensus” of leaders agreed on using a hotel/motel tax increase to finance the local portion of construction. In January of 1989, Rankin Smith and then-governor Joe Frank Harris signed a “memorandum of understanding” for the Falcons to play in the Dome under a 20-year lease. The project came to fruition in the spring of 1989 when the state, the Atlanta City Council, and Fulton County Commission approved the construction of the $210 million Dome. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on November 22, 1989, with construction getting underway on March 27, 1990. As soon as the project was passed, the Dome became a major ‘player’ in the sporting community. Rankin Smith was determined to introduce the South’s latest showpiece to the football world and he succeeded. With the determined backing of the Smith family, the Georgia Dome

played host to the most significant sporting events in the world as global attention was focused on Atlanta for Super Bowl XXVIII played on January 31, 1994 between the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills. The Georgia Dome hosted its second Super Bowl on January 30, 2000 between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans.

ATLANTA–FULTON COUNTY STADIUM (1966–91) Falcons home Record: 85–106–2 Twenty-six years of NFL football in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium came to an end on December 15, 1991 when the Falcons met the Seattle Seahawks for their final game in their very first home. Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was built in 51 weeks and gave the city the foundation to support big-league baseball and pro football. Less than a year after construction, the stadium was primped for a cameo appearance by the baseball Braves, who were still playing in Milwaukee at the time, on April 9, 1965. On August 14 of that same year, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first football game ever played at the stadium. Some local people deemed the Stadium “The Miracle on Capital Avenue.”

The NFL and all 32 NFL clubs have created a fan code of conduct to help promote a positive fan environment at NFL stadiums. The fan code of conduct is designed to set clear expectations and encourage a stadium environment that is enjoyable for all fans. Teams may add additional provisions to the standard code based on local circumstances or preferences. “The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans and it will be a major focus this season,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can -- from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium. We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums and enjoy the entire day.”

The code of conduct is intended to address behavior that detracts from the gameday experience. Any fan in violation of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games. In addition to the fan code of conduct, the NFL and its clubs will evaluate fan feedback and existing programs to ensure their effectiveness and shape the development of new programs. These measures are designed to build on the many outstanding programs already in place at NFL stadiums to enhance the fan experience.

FAN CODE OF CONDUCT The National Football League, Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Dome are committed to creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable game-day experience within the Georgia Dome and surrounding property. We want fans of all ages to enjoy the excitement and enthusiasm of game days; therefore all fans are encouraged to respect the rights of others by displaying proper etiquette. The Fan Code of Conduct includes, but is not limited to, abstaining from the following: • Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature. • Intoxication or other signs of alcohol or substance impairment that results in irresponsible behavior. • Fighting, foul or abusive language and/or obscene gestures. • Interference with the progress of the game (including throwing objects onto the field). • Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel. • Verbal or physical harassment of opposing team fans.

2010 Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons Code of Conduct applies to all ticket holders and patrons of the Georgia Dome and Georgia Dome property. Ticket holders and patrons are responsible for their conduct as well as the conduct of their guests. Stadium staff will promptly intervene when necessary to ensure the Code of Conduct is enforced. Ticket holders and/or patrons who choose not to adhere to these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund, revocation of season tickets, and possible arrest and prosecution for violations of city ordinances.

In-Game Assistance

Fans are encouraged to report any inappropriate behavior to the nearest security guard or Georgia Dome employee. Fans wishing to report inappropriate or suspicious behavior may also do so by either texting or calling our assistance hotline. • Text the word “Dome” to 78247 • Call the assistance hotline at 404-223-8850 The National Football League, Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Dome thank you for adhering to the provisions of the Fan Code of Conduct.

Feeling Right At Home Under Head Coach Mike Smith, the Falcons are tied for the NFL’s highest winning percentage at home in the last three seasons. Since Smith became Atlanta’s head coach in 2008, the Falcons are 18-3 (.857 win pct.) at the Georgia Dome. Matt Ryan has built an impressive resume when competing at the Georgia Dome. In two and a half seasons as the Falcons’ starting quarterback, Ryan owns a 18-1 record at the Dome. Ryan’s 18 wins at home since 2008 are the most in the League. The former first round pick’s 64.3 percent completion rate also ranks among the NFL’s top signal callers. Ryan has recorded a passer rating over 100 points in two of his four home games in 2010, including a season-high 118.1 rating in Atlanta’s win over the Bengals. The Falcons are 14-0 when Ryan records a QB rating over 100.

In It To Win It Since being drafted as the third overall pick in 2008, Falcons QB Matt Ryan has started 40 games, posting a 28-12 (.700) regular season record. Ryan’s .700 winning percentage ranks second among all quarterbacks with 30-or-more starts.

The Predator Stalks QB’s At Pro Bowl Level In 2008, John Abraham set a Falcons franchise record with 16.5 sacks after totaling 14.0 in his first two seasons with the team. Since the defensive minded Mike Smith took over as head coach of the Falcons in 2008, Abraham has totaled 30.0 sacks, which is third in the NFC. In 2010, Abraham has recorded a team-high 8.0 sacks and ranks fourth among all defensive ends. In a Week 7 victory over the Bengals, Abraham personified the Falcons drive to finish strong as he notched two sacks in the final two minutes of the game, including an 11-yard sack on the game’s final play. In a victory over the Ravens, “The Predator” amassed two more sacks on Joe Flacco as he continues to make a strong case for a well-deserved spot on the NFC Pro Bowl team.

U.S.S. Babineaux In a 4-3 defensive scheme, the primary roles of a defensive tackle are to hold the point of attack, penetrate the offensive line to break up plays in the backfield, and pursue the quarterback. Since being drafted by the Falcons in 2005, Jonathan Babineaux has excelled in each of those roles. In 2009, Babineaux led the Falcons with a career-high six sacks. That total was the second highest among all defensive tackles. Since he entered the League in 2005, Babineaux has recorded 16 sacks, ranking ninth in the NFL among defensive tackles during that span. His six sacks in 2009 are tied for the eighth-best single season total by a defensive tackle since 2005 and the second-best single season total by a Falcon since DT Rod Coleman notched 10.5 sacks in 2005. In the last three seasons, Babineaux has totaled 11.5 sacks, which ranks tied for fifth among defensive tackles. Since 2008, Babineaux has six sacks on third down, showing his ability to get to the quarterback even when the offense is prepared for the pass rush. The true test for a defensive tackle may be tackles for loss, which can put opposing offenses in difficult situations. According to STATS, inc., Babineaux is tied for the League lead with 8.5 tackles for loss in 2009 and his 19 stuffs since 2008 are tops in the NFL.
