Event DJ Vs Artist: What’s The Difference?
Private Event DJ Vs Artist. What Is The Difference? Different Types of DJs: When people think about hiring a DJ they probably think that the service is standard across all DJs. But is it? Well the answer is no and I’m going to tell you about one of the most important considerations before hiring a DJ. For the purpose of this blog I am going to separate our beloved DJs into two major categories. Private Event DJs If you were going to hire a DJ for a high school graduation in Vancouver for example you would probably be looking for this first category. I like to call them “Private Event DJs”. You may better know them as wedding DJs, private party DJs, corporate party DJs, school dance DJs and many other names similar to this. The purpose of this kind of DJ is to show up and play what the client has asked for which is often specified in the form a track list sent to the DJ prior to the event. Part of the service that is often provided at these events is song requests which is exactly what it sounds like. You can ask the DJ to play a song right then and there. Now at this point I’m sure some people are reading this thinking to themselves “isn’t this what every DJ does”? Well if you asked yourself this question this post is for you because although a lot of DJs provide these services there is another major category of DJs that exist and the last thing you want to do is book the wrong DJ for your event and on the flip side get booked for the wrong event as a DJ. So, on that note we move onto the second category.
Performing Artist DJs This second category I have given the name “Performing Artist DJs”. For those that are not familiar with the DJ industry this may be completely new to you which will make this all the more interesting! These DJs as you can probably guess don’t provide the same services as the above categories so what are these DJs all about? Let’s dive in! A “performing Artist DJ” tends to play the majority of their gigs at nightclubs, music festivals and touring to cities like Vancouver where the electronic music scene is booming! Now of course these DJs have a lot of the same skills as the above DJs and are more than capable of playing those events but the reason they don’t or at least not often is because of the factor from which I derived their name! They are performing artists. So, along with DJing they spend countless hours in the studio creating their own music. They produce this music with the intent of playing it live and these genres are far more popular in a nightclub than at a wedding. I want to make clear though that the venues these DJs perform at often do have music guidelines but a “Performing Artist DJ” will of course try to land gigs that promotes similar music to what they themselves produce. Along with this they try to avoid song request and top 40 songs like the black plague! Finally, to wrap up the difference between these two categories is that these DJs will often grow into large solo acts, creating their own production filled with choreographed lighting, visual and more!
