Dance Safe
GETTING HOME SAFELY Driving home in the morning after staying awake all night partying can be dangerous. Below are some suggestions of how to reduce your risk of getting into a car accident.
DEFINITE DON'TS - Don’t drive if you have been drinking alcohol. Alcohol lowers your reaction time and inhibits motor functioning. - Don’t drive if you have been using ketamine, G H B , L S D , m u s h r o o m s , e c s t a s y, s p e e d o r a n y o t h e r s t r o n g p s yc h o a c t i ve d r u g . E ve n i f yo u h ave “c o m e down” and think you are fine to drive, these drugs all have residual effects that can impair your d r i v i n g a b i l i t y. E v e n e c s t a s y a n d s p e e d , w h i c h c a n make you feel more alert, are dangerous to drive on. These drugs especially can take a lot out of you and make you tired after you come down. It is always better to get a good night’s sleep before attempting to drive after using them. - D o n ’ t d r i v e i f y o u a r e t o o t i r e d o r s l e e p y. I f y o u a r e f e e l i n g s l e e p y, y o u m a y b e t h i n k i n g o n l y a b o u t g e t t i n g h o m e a n d i n t o b e d . H o w e v e r, i t i s d a n g e r o u s to drive in this condition. (Note: coffee may keep you awake, but it won’t improve your driving ability i f y o u a r e s i g n i f i c a n t l y t i r e d o r s l e e p y. )

Dance Safe
Avoid getting into a potentially dangerous driving situation - A s s i g n a “d e s i g n a t e d d r i ve r ” w h o a g r e e s t o stay sober the entire night and to not exhaust themselves dancing for too long. - Leave the party or rave before you get too tired or sleepy to drive. It’s safer to show up early and l e a v e e a r l i e r t h a n t o s h o w u p l a t e a n d l e a v e l a t e r. Know your body’s limits. - Ta k e t h e b u s . I f y o u k n o w y o u a r e g o i n g t o s t a y a l l night, some raves end late enough in the morning that public transportation systems may be running. - Ta k e a c a b . C o m p a r e d t o t h e p r i c e o f s o m e r a v e s , and definitely some drugs, cab fare is a relatively minor expense for the safety it provides. Plan to share a cab with others to spread out the costs. Also, think of the great conversations you can get i n t o w i t h t h e d r i v e r.
If you find yourself in a potentially dangerous driving situation - Have someone else drive the car who has been sober the whole night or is more rested than you. - Ta k e a b u s o r a c a b a n d c o m e b a c k l a t e r t o g e t y o u r c a r. - Go home with someone else and come back later t o g e t y o u r c a r. - Make sure somebody stays awake along with the driver and keeps conversation going. Have this p e r s o n s i t i n t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t . Ta l k i n g t o a sleepy driver helps keep them awake and alert. - When all else fails, lock your doors and sleep i n y o u r c a r ! ( K e e p i n m i n d , h o w e v e r, t h a t i n s o m e states even having your keys in the ignition constitutes drunken driving. If you are intoxicated, you may want to hide your keys in the tire well or under the hood, so it is clear to any police officer who may approach you that you were never driving in that condition.)

Now, after two decades of revolutionizing the dance music industry and pushing it forward, Corsten has decided to take a page from his past and make it new again. 1. Hi there! 2016 has been a pretty exciting year for yo u a n d w e’ r e o n l y 5 m o n t h s i n . W h a t d i r e c t i o n d o yo u hope to take your music in in 2016? What can fans look forward to in the coming months? I’m currently working on my artist album which has been in process since the beginning of this year so I’ve had an amazing time on a creative level. I’m all about the big epic melodies and textures again so that is what you can e x p e c t f r o m m e t h i s y e a r. 2. After two decades of leading the way in the industry you’re still going strong, and producing bigger and better hits. What is your secret to being timeless? Thank you. It means a lot to me to hear this as a music p r o d u c e r. I ’ v e a l w a y s b e l i e v e d t h a t t h e k e y t o a g r e a t s o n g i s a g r e a t m e l o d y. I ’ v e a l w a y s m a d e i t a p o i n t t o t r y and produce a melody that is catchy and stays with you long after the music has been heard. It’s always good to look around and anticipate the latest trends and see what work with your music with these trends. 3. It’s been a decade since fans the world over have been asking for the return of Gouryella. What made you want to revive it? I felt the personal need for trance with big epic melodies. To o m u c h o f t o d a y ’ s t r a n c e h a s b e c o m e b o r d e r l i n e E D M . I t started missing that turn of the century sentiment. With this in mind I produced a track that had the Gouryella sound… Through the success of the release of the single, I was asked by many promoters for a Gouryella concept after releasing the single. The response from the fans were so great and the promoters wanted to see if I was interested in giving the name a live show. 4. What can fans expect from the renewed Gouryella project and the live tour concept? The name Gouryella itself is pretty mysterious. It means “heaven” in Australian aboriginal language. It is an experience based around all the biggest questions human kind has. 5. How do you juggle the constant travelling, producing, overseeing your label and your other projects without neglecting the other? I t ’ s n o t e a s y. I w i l l t e l l y o u t h a t . I ’ m g r a t e f u l t h a t I h a v e a wonderful and passionate team around me that help me. I could never do this on my own.

6 . Yo u h o s t y o u r o w n w e e k l y r a d i o s h o w ‘ C o r s t e n ’ s C o u n t d o w n ’. H o w d o m i n a t e d o y o u f e e l r a d i o w a s i n breaking those early Gouryella records? Is the radio market stronger or weaker now for having that same impact with tracks, or is it all streaming services these days? Corsten’s Countdown is a great way for me to promote music that I believe in, whether it be mine or others. Radio nowadays has limited itself to purely commercial music. The first Gouryella track was a top 20 hit in the UK which is almost unthinkable now. Streaming is definitely important now to spread different music to wider audience. It is also needed as internet has also overcome radio in terms of market growth. Yo u h a v e b e e n s o c o n s i s t e n t w i t h m a k i n g q u a l i t y m u s i c and always being a forefront for dance music. What motivates you as an artist to continue doing what you do? I think any person that wants to make a career in being a musician must be passionate in what they do. It is not an easy path and it takes a lot of commitment from your side as it takes up pretty much most, if not all, of your life. 7 . Ta l k u s t h r o u g h t h e c r e a t i v e p r o c e s s o f p r o d u c i n g a h i t t r a c k l i k e G o u r y e l l a ’ s ‘A n a h e r a ’ ? W h e n I m a d e ‘A n a h e r a ’ I w a s p l a y i n g a r o u n d w i t h v a r i o u s melodies when a certain melody struck a chord in me and made the hairs on my arms stand on end. I never set out to produce a Gouryella track but when working on the track further I knew this was it. It had that Gouryella feel. 8. Is there something that you know today working in the industry that you wished you knew when you first started out with Gouryella? I think I would have called it Ferry Corsten presents Gouryella from the first release. 9. What would you say are the three most important things every producer should know? Archiving, less is more, not everyone likes a sausage (In other words don’t max out your track levels through the r o o f. ) 10. Is there anything in the industry right now that you would want to change or would like to make better? I would like to see more diversity and individualism again but I do feel that it is going there which is great! 11. When can your fans in Asia catch the Gouryella live show and what would you like to say to them? Thanks for the support and feel free to follow me Ferry Corsten on all social media to get updates of Gouryella.

FONO LEAPS FOWARD Jason Wong, better known as DJ Fono, emerged into the local dance scene as the Champion of Heineken’s Found at Thirst DJ competition in 2003. Following that success, Fono was offered a residency with the country’s leading clubbing establishment Zouk Kuala Lumpur in 2004. With a schedule that show no signs of slowing down, it is a testament that he is still one of the most exciting and sought after DJs to watch out for in years to come.

Any tips for aspiring DJs? Do it for the joy and passion for the music, and not be deceived by the glamourous status you see from a famous DJ. Chasing these things eventually fades overtime. It all started after I graduated from a DJ course following my seniors around their weekly residential gigs, I understood as I was still new and had no experience but eager to learn from the experts. Night in and out, I would tag along and observe them on decks. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I’m not saying that I’ve achieved a lot but I feel grateful to be where I am, but it’s a long ride to where I want to be. 2. What has been keeping you busy in 2016? I’ve been busy with my weekly club residential routines, gigs and college events. For the rest of the year I’m hoping to land more gigs, events, and working more on song productions. 3. Are you working on any tracks at the moment? At the moment, I am working on a track, it is half done. I’m guided by Ken Fung and Jen Foo thus with their guidance, I believe the tracks will be something big. Stay tuned as we will announce it in the near future! 4. Any upcoming collaborations for this year? Actually I’m not concentrating on that at the moment, but in the future there definitely will be, I will be focusing on producing my own track for the time being, because I feel that my production skills isn’t as comparable with others, so until I reach a level that I’m satisfied with, or slightly better to where I am, then the collaborations will come in without any doubts. 5. 1 . Ta l k t o u s a b o u t y o u r j o u r n e y i n t h e i n d u s t r y t h u s f a r. It’s good; I’m having such a good time! I’ve been making music for a long time, like 10 years. What I do think is that I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m getting a little older and also more creative I feel like. So it’s because I’m more experience, it may be weird but I do feel like that’s happening right now. And it’s a good thing. 2 . Wa s t h e r e s o m e o n e s p e c i f i c o r w a s t h e r e a track that made you embark into the dance music scene? Well I think it’s nothing specific. I just remember back in the day I went to parties and there were DJ’s who I thought were really cool. Coz I think the DJ’s are sort of directors of the night. So you’re directing the night for the party people and I think that’s really special because when directing you’re setting the mood. So if you play the wrong records or have the wrong vibe, it goes back to the people. It looks like an easy responsibility but I think it is sort of a much b i g g e r r e s p o n s i b i l i t y. B e c a u s e i f y o u m e s s u p the set, it’s like you’re running the night for everyone. I’ve been to parties with DJ’s so b a d a n d I ’d b e l i ke “ M a n , yo u ’ r e r u n n i n g t h e night!” 3 . Ta l k u s t h r o u g h t h e p r o c e s s o f m a k i n g o n e of your hits? I mean the process isn’t very easy but it’s a l o t o f t r i a l a n d e r r o r. J u s t l i k e a l o t o f o t h e r things, with everything good, it’s all a matter o f t r i a l a n d e r r o r. I t ’ s n o t a m a g i c a l t h i n g l i k e “Oh let’s sit 5 minutes” magical story and we finish a record in 30 minutes. Not with me, maybe with some but yeah not with me. It t a k e s a l o n g t i m e a c t u a l l y.
4. We saw one of your recent interviews where you talked about creating singles and not looking into make an album. Ye a h y e a h , f o r m e I w a n t t o j u s t m a k e r e c o r d s and release them because I think at the moment when you make a record and when it sits to long in the safe, for example, it gets outdated. And I don’t want to be putting out stuff that is outdated. 5. What new things can we expect from you in 2016? A lot of new music, a lot of singles! That’s for sure! 6 . Ta l k t o u s a b o u t h o w 2 0 1 5 h a s b e e n f o r y o u . Yo u ’ v e h a d s o m a n y s t r o n g r e c o r d s o u t . Ye a h m y r e c o r d s a r e s t r o n g . I t h i n k i t ’ s b e e n a g o o d y e a r, v e r y s t e a d y. I f e e l c r e a t i v e ; m y last couple of months have been creative. I’m happy with that, because it’s hard to find creativity sometimes. 7. Does all your traveling inspire new tracks and spark that creativity? Ye a h , t h a t f o r s u r e ! B u t s o m e t i m e s t h e r e ’ s a break in creativity you know and you have to accept it instead of trying to push it. 8. What is the ultimate R3hab experience? Just a good time! I think it’s very simple but also really hard to give people a good time. But that’s the thing, I love giving people a good time! 9. If you were a gladiator what would the track playing as you enter the arena? That’s a good one. I think Rocky’s theme song * h u m s i t *. T h a t ’ s a c o o l o n e t h e r e !

Beats first. Sometimes you get a hook in your head and start writing a rhythm section. If its dance music, you have to get the beat right and manoeuvre the lyrics through it.
2. Who or what inspire you the most when starting up? Quincy jones and Babyface, they were my heroes. I looked up to them at a young age and I wanted to be Quincy Jones, I’m still trying. Haha. Those are big shoes to fill. 3. How would you describe your s o m e o n e w h o’ s n eve r a t t e n d e d ?

Sometimes when you plan things it doesn’t work out, but when you come together something magical happens. In the studio working together is always fun, we order food all the time and binge! 5. Following up on that, what are the challenges you face to create something original?

They were saying its not good, and this year they said its amazing! Haha! Sunnery: That’s why we release something every 6 months cause we feel the tracks are not ready yet. The timing has to be right. Ryan: It’s probably a good time to start our own label. Haha!

Currently been busy with ZION Club KL, located at Changkat. I’m also managing many DJs, MCs, musicians & performers at ZION Club. Focusing on giving talented individuals both known and aspiring DJs the opportunity to expand their career further in Malaysia and at global scale. Pushing talents whom I know in Malaysia to be better in terms of skills and t e c h n i c a l i t y. I ’ m a l s o r u n n i n g m y o w n s o c i a l media Agency business and doing Mobile apps a n d w e b d e s i g n i n t h e t e c h n o l o g y s e c t o r, along side giving marketing consultancies.
DJ Craze from US, reason being one of the worlds top turntable DJ whom I look up to. Also the versatile skill set which is able to adapt in trend changes in any genre of music w i t h t e c h n i c a l t u r n t a b l e s k i l l s . M a i n l y, I respect the movement he is doing in today’s industry and constantly having faith on t h e g r o w t h o f t h e D J a r t f o r m . H e’ s a l w ay s supporting any DJs from different types of background and music genres.
2. Are you working on any tracks for the time being? I have many unfinished tracks which I need to find time to complete it, but its been on pause due to my busy schedule and tour schedules. H o w e v e r, definitely looking forward in producing and making music with our local homegrown musicians. 3. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never attended your gigs? I w o u l d d e s c r i b e m y s o u n d a s “ c h a o t i c ”. Although currently the trends are into Electronic Dance Music, but in my gigs I often perform open format, mainly EDM based Open Format. So I guess even when I’m playing EDM there are loads of turntablism skills involved and there are inserts ranging from dubstep, Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop, Rock, Pop, Retro etc. with mainstream & underground EDM in general.
5. Which relatively new local DJ’s have you been listening to or enjoying recently? Generally I listen to all new local DJs and enjoy their sounds. Different DJs have different types of sound which I love. If I were to choose, I would say Goldfish & Blink if you consider new local DJ’s who are expanding in reputation and a global scale. 6. Any upcoming collaborations? Currently working with “ICON MISERY” on many tracks. Looking forward in working with singers like James Baum, rappers like Roshan o f t h e K -To w n C l a n , M C V I B E , a n d l o c a l pioneers like DJ KEN. 7 . I f y o u c o u l d h a v e a n y s u p e r p o w e r, w h a t would it be? T i m e Tr a v e l , t o a b l e t o w i t n e s s m u s i c l e g e n d s and pioneers from the past or change any bad events from happening... No! not the birth of Justin Bieber! Haha!

ALBERT NEVE SPEAK UP Albert Neve has been dubbed one of Spain’s biggest dance music exports and this talented artist shuts down non-believers with his unbeatable blend of sound and numerous hit singles. can’t deny that it has been difficult, but with a lot of work and dedication the results speak for themselves. 2. What kind of sounds do you associate yourself with most when you produce? In the last few years I’ve been known mainly for my productions oriented towards the mainstream scene, EDM, house, etc, but in the past I’ve produced a lot of different vibes, like D r u m ’ n ’ B a s s , Tr a n c e , Te c h n o o r e v e n P o p a n d Hip-Hop. As a DJ I consider myself an eclectic artist, so you can imagine how much variety is possible when I’m creating music. I like to experiment with different styles, different vibes, and I like to mix a wide variety of music. I won’t feel comfortable repeating the same music again and again using the same framework or the same sounds. I think that’s much more rewarding for you and your followers. 3. How has 2016 been treating you thus far? It’s been a very important year for me, I’ve had a lot of really interesting gigs and exciting

Furthermore, me and my team are working hard to step back on Asean territories in the next few months. 4 . Yo u f i r s t s t a r t e d y o u r m u s i c c a r e e r w h e n you were merely 15 and burst through the scene in 2006. How do you think your production style and sound have changed and progressed through the years? We l l , I ’d l ove t o s h o w yo u my f i r s t p r o d u c t i o n s and compare them with my last releases, but luckily for all of you reading this and for your ears it’s not possible right now (lol). I’ve got to be honest, I never took lessons about m u s i c t h e o r y, p r o d u c t i o n t e c h n i q u e s a n d I n e v e r w e n t t o a s c h o o l t o t r a i n a s a n e n g i n e e r. Everything I’ve learned in my career has been self-taught. My first tracks were an absolute joke from a technical point of view, but pretty musically interesting to the crowd, so I could get over my limitations. Over time I’ve learned to master everything about electronic production, and although it’s a changing w o r l d a n d t h e r e’ s a l w ay s s o m e t h i n g t o l e a r n , I’m pretty happy with the results nowadays. Of course I’ve always adapted myself to the different current styles through the years, t h a n k s t o m y i n n a t e c u r i o s i t y. 5. Aside from producing and remixing you’re also touring the world. How do find the down time to focus on new music and projects? That’s something I have changed in the last y e a r. I h a v e a b e a u t i f u l a n d a m a z i n g s t u d i o perfectly adapted to spend hours and hours producing music, and I’ve always preferred to work there instead of doing the job on a plane, for instance. Honestly I always find very little motivation to create interesting stuff in an hotel room, or between two flights while in the airport. Despite this, I had to force myself and change my working habits and adapt myself to a constantly moving life. N o t s o l o n g a g o I s o l d m y M a c P r o c o m p u t e r, and I’m producing now with just a laptop, thanks to the amazing power we can get from them nowadays. I still always finish projects off in my studio though. 6. What goes into the process of curating new music? I always try to be pretty original in my tracks, I like to bring something different to the
crowd, without losing the focus on what they expect from me, but I like to surprise them. Sometimes just a shout can give you this, while others with a different structure give you s o m e t h i n g e l s e . F i n a l l y, w e c r e a t e e m o t i o n s , and I try to express something with my tracks, I consider them as little histories. And within those histories, a change of direction always helps to be different than the rest. 7. What does it feel like knowing that all your relentless hard work is paying off and is being recognized by industry hard hitters l i k e A r m i n Va n B u u r e n , C h u c k i e , D i m i t r i Ve g a s & L i k e M i k e a n d m a n y m o r e ? I’m extremely proud to know that such a m a z i n g a r t i s t s a r e s u p p o r t i n g m y s t u f f. I f you ask me about Chuckie, it’s a bit different, because I consider him as a friend, who has a l w a y s h e l p e d m e i n e v e r y w a y, s u p p o r t i n g m e but being very demanding at the same time. 8. What do you think are the three most vital things a producer needs to know before producing a track? Tr y i n g t o r e d u c e e v e r y t h i n g I k n o w t o t h r e e vital things is going to be difficult, but l e t ’ s t r y. F i r s t l y, w e c a n ’ t f o r g e t t h a t w e ’ r e creating music, and we must understand what is right and what is wrong. I’m not telling the people to study years of sol-fa (which definitely would help) but some basic notions are essential. Second, it’s important to know what we want to do, what the main idea is, and how we want the end product to sound. It’s not that easy to open a blank template and s i m p l y l e t y o u r i n s p i r a t i o n f l o w . T h i r d l y, i t ’ s essential to be as skilled as possible. In the i n t e r n e t e ra w e’ r e c o m p e t i n g w i t h t h e w h o l e world, and modern production is extremely complex and laborious, so make sure you learn as much as you can. 9 . Yo u ’ r e a s c e n d i n g i n t o t h e u p p e r r a n k s o f the dance music industry and it’s no secret that your unique sounds and hard work is propelling you. What do you hope to achieve with your music? I would like to go as far as possible. I do what I do because it’s my real passion, nothing i n t h e w o r l d w o u l d m a k e m e h a p p i e r. W h e n I started, I couldn’t ever imagine having a r e a l a n d p r o s p e r o u s c a r e e r, s o n o w I d o n’ t want to fix any limits on it. From my side I’m going to keep on working to reach as high as possible, and if some day this dream has to end, I don’t want to regret not trying to push as far as I can.
