The past month the whole world celebrated earth day and year after year we witness the increase of activities and events in Jeddah during this time. No denying activities like these create awareness but sometimes awareness is not enough. We need to take strong actions towards improving the city and making it a better and healthier place to live in; simple yet firm decisions and actions can make a whole lot of difference such as enforcing and implementing littering laws where organizations and the public will be fined if they fail to comply. Encouraging students to participate in social services by giving them credit hours or extra marks is another way to increase awareness and action. It is also our jobs as world citizens to maintain the well-being of our planet. While it is easy to commit through this important cause through words, what the world needs now is action. Destination Jeddah has tried to make contributions in whatever way possible – our Green Living section provides tips on how going green is can easily become part of your every day life. Through promoting environmentally conscious habits and emphasizing the need for action, I am certain we can all unite in order to ensure that the clean air and lush forests of today will be present in our children’s, and their children’s lives.

What is your worst hospital waiting-room experience? Readers share their stories from the crowded hospital corridors. Dareen Halawani My experience is different. I am a medical technologist intern at KAAUH jeddah, and one day while I was waiting for my ride at the main gate of the hospital at the peak of rush hour while EVERY Doctor, intern and student are rushing in & out...there came a little man with his really old veryyy skinny father who couldnt even walk. He fell on the floor and lay there while his poor son was running all over the hospital looking for someone to help. My field has no paitent medical experince and who am I to speak? I was looking at the Doctors & the medical students who were passing by him not even asking what’s wrong..eventually one of the security men saw him and some other men (NOT Doctors) carried him.That was THE MOST SHOKING MOMENT IN MY LIFE... Adil Malaika To me every visit to a local Jeddah hospital is strange and could be considered the worst. Every time I have the misfortune of visiting either faqih or Erfan I feel as though I am in a cattle market, you only need to sit at the reception to realise this is so. Here’s an example at Erfan. I had an appointment for an abdomen and pelvic ultra sound. Upon reporting on time for my appointment I was handed a small bottle of water and was told to drink it since my bladder had to be full before the procedure. I asked why on earth did you not specify this on the form when I made the appointment so that I would come with a full bladder! The nurse said oh no baba we have to give you the water when you come for your appointment. I said first I am not your baba and second are you guys fond of keeping patients queuing for hours while they fill their bladders? I refused to wait and asked for another appointment on another day. Another example, my mother who’s 84 had to wait 2 hours for her CT Scan although at the time we were told we would only wait for 15 mins!

pm appointment and you get in at 8:30 pm, and you got in not because they called you .. NO .. because I yelled and I was upset !.. That was’t the only thing, there was no A/C nor TV. Nothing. Just alot of annoying little kids, screaming and wandering and running around the corridors. It’s kind funny though when you see one of the kids chewing on some plants and another coloring the walls and seats.

Reader’s Feedback Dear Sirs, On page 17 of the April 2010 Issue #15 of DJ, there is an article entitled ARAMCO FAMILY DAY (bottom left). The article reads: “… Children were also given a chance to use a wheelchair in a simulated course used to demonstrate just how limiting a wheelchair can be if you are confined to one after an accident.” Now stop and reflect for a minute: “this wheelchair” has actually provided accessibility and mobility to a person that has lost the use of his/her legs. Without “this wheelchair”, a person may be unable to go anywhere independently. Without “this wheelchair”, a person may be isolated from family, friends and society at large. I think society must realize that “this wheelchair” is not confining but rather liberating to anyone who does not have use of lower limbs. It is an adaptive tool to allow mobility not confinement. As liberating as a wheelchair is for someone who needs it, it is still confining for someone who is blessed with full use of their limbs. And that is what the wheelchair ride was about, trying to bring fully healthy people closer to those in wheelchairs. I do understand your point of view though, and its a very perceptive and intuitive one. Maybe it is an idea that should be introduced to society and brought to their attention.

NHSR’s Branches Of Mercy Destination

This month we give a big thumbs up to the NSHR for raising awareness about child abuse in the Kingdom. The “Gosoun Al-Rahma” (Branches of Mercy) campaign was launched on March 30 from the Makkah province branch. The name of the campaign was taken from a nine-year-old girl tortured by her father and stepmother in 2006. The campaign is aimed at the Arab World at large since child abuse is not limited to the Kingdom alone. We at DJ want to congratulate the NSHR for fulfilling its role and working to spread awareness about the problem which affects the entire world. Child abuse is especially problematic here with up to 188 cases of child abuse reported over six months according to an Arab News report this month. Statistics state that 72 percent of abuse cases are by parents while 10 percent were by siblings. Strangers account for an additional nine percent and domestic workers about two percent.

Thumbs down to... Waiting in hospitals:

The point of booking an appointment with your doctor is to save time. For both of you. At a time when we all have busy lives, we book appointments and show up on time to ensure that no one’s time is wasted. Right? Wrong. It seems that many hospitals in jeddah think of your time as valueless, and consistently make patients who have booked apointments sometimes a month in advance, who show up on the dot, wait for several hours befor seeing their doctor. not fifteen minutes, not half an hour. HOURS. Five hours isnt unheard of. Why is that? we’d like to know. Is whoever is booking the doctor’s shedule so inefficient that such a backlog happens? Or does the doctor not show up on time? Is the time allocated for each appointment unrealistic? Do they all have “emergincies”? Do they let in walkin patients without appointments? if so, what’s the point of making one? we might as well all just go when we want to, since the wait can’t get any worse.

Ginger (Recommendation of The Month)

In the spirit of being more fit both in mind and body we wanted to recommend Ginger this month. That’s right. The same root that’s related to cardamom and galangal. Throughout history ginger has had medicinal uses ranging from curing indigestion to disguising the taste of sour medicines. Tea brewed from ginger is a popular European folk remedy against colds, while in China a scrambled “ginger egg” dish was allegedly affective against coughs. Recent research on rats has shown it may have beneficial properties in treating diabetes. According to online data, Ginger can be used to treat things like arthritis pain and is effective as a blood thinning agent in cholesterol and heart disease treatments. It can even help treat against a certain form of diarrhea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. So chop up some ginger in a dish this month and see the difference if you’ve got a bad cold or joint inflammation.

With a multitude of restaurants, take-aways, cafes and other eating out places in Jeddah (as attested time and time again by Destination Jeddah), it’s too easy for your weight to creep up as you indulge your taste buds in these various delights. Even the most health-conscious person can fall prey to the fantastic tastes of the world found in Jeddah’s restaurants. A balanced diet and regular exercise are key in maintaining a healthy body and mind. Health experts recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day. Although it sounds like a lot, once you incorporate a few changes into your daily routine, you’ll find that you can easily exceed this guideline, while having fun at the same time!

Exercise The most obvious way to get fit is to join

a gym. Ranging from the basic boxing type gyms (think Rocky) to the more plush Gold’s Gym, Jeddah has something to suit everyone. In comparison to the West, prices are fairly steep, but the benefits of regular workouts will soon pay off.

Swimming is another great way to get your heart pumping, but since it is a low impact sport, your joints will be protected. Some gyms have swimming pools but it’s a good idea to visit the gym and check out the facilities before sealing the deal. It might turn out that your bathtub at home is bigger than their swimming pool, or it’s not as clean as it looked in their brochure! If none of the above appeal to you, or you simply don’t have the time to dedicate exclusively to exercise, then why not make small changes to your daily routine?

If the gym is not your thing, then why not invest in some exercise equipment, so that you can exercise from the comfort of your own home. Running is one of the most effective cardiovascular exercises around, and a vigorous 30-minute jog can burn an impressive 350 calories (offsetting the cream donut or two you might have indulged in during the day!) A treadmill will set you back on average around SR1500, and can be purchased from U-Mark, or any other good sports shop.

For the more adventurous, try horse riding. Not only will does it work out every muscle in your body, but you’ll learn a new skill at the same time!

• Take the stairs as opposed to the lift at all opportunities • Set your alarm clock 10 minutes earlier than your usual waking up time, and follow a quick exercise routine. Even stomach exercises can be done whilst you’re still in bed! • Park your car at the farthest point away from the mall and walk • Kindly refuse the help of the bag packers at the supermarket, and pack your own groceries.

If you have ever been for a drive in the evening, you might have come across groups of people out for walks, in the most random places. You’ll find all kinds of people out – young and old alike. There aren’t many designated walking areas in Jeddah, so people tend to go walking on the pavements. It’s a great way to start your regimen, it’s free and there’s no membership required! You’ll also notice street sellers selling random items on route, which can also include those treats that you’re not supposed to have, so be careful! Don’t forget to take your water bottle as the

temperature is still around 30 degrees in the evening and the sweat will start pouring early on. Keep your eyes on the ground surfaces, as they will always be changing from concrete pavements to missing slabs and random manhole covers raised out of the ground. It’s not recommended that women go alone so try to take along a companion. Oh, and finally there are taxis circling the route looking for tired people, don’t be drawn in by thinking that sitting in the taxi and telling him to do 10 laps will burn off the donuts and ice cream you had on the way down!

If you find this difficult, then try fruit squash • Invest in a smoothie maker and blend together ripe fruits for a delicious way to incorporate fruits into your diet • Make breakfast your largest meal of the day, have a medium sized lunch, and a small dinner

• In Jeddah, most fast food restaurants tend to supersize your meals automatically. Make it a point to state that you want a regular sized meal. Even better, forego the high sugary fizzy drinks, and request a bottle of water to wash your meal down with instead. • As more and more restaurants are catering for the health conscious, they are providing customers with more options. Always opt for the grilled version of your meal. • Substitute fries for mashed potatoes. • You don’t need to order a starter, main and dessert. Just choose two, so either a main and a dessert, or a starter and a main. You could even just have a starter and a dessert.

These are just a few suggestions to get you started on your new health regime. By making a few slight changes to your everyday routine, you can really make a difference to your health. LITTLE JOE MCLERRAN QUARTET: At the American Consulate on April 7, the Little Joe Mclerran Quartet performed a wide range of blues and jazz classics to a crowd of over 100 men and women. The four man band was on tour in the Middle East and stopped for a few days in Jeddah for their very first concert in the Kingdom. The tour is part of the Rhythm Road series organized by the U.S. Department of State dedicated to showcasing AFIA: MOTHERLY LOVE Afia recently launched the “Express your love for your mother” campaign in Red Sea Mall in Jeddah to spread aware and appreciation for our maternal figures. Spearheading the campaign was the website www.afiamother. com, which urges readers to express their appreciation for the mothers and describe their experiences. Director of Afia, Amin Sultan, explained further, “We have set this aside this campaign as an expression of the importance of love and respect and appreciation parents and in particular, the mother.”

New Openings in Jeddah

JAMEEL SQUARE

It would be difficult not to notice one of the latest additions to Jeddah’s growing skyline; the strikingly elegant Jameel Square on Tahlia St. has been turning heads since construction began in 2006. Called one of the most modern office buildings in Jeddah, Jameel Square is a project of Hadia Abdul Latif Jameel Co. Ltd. Leasing began in 2009 and the new tenants of Jameel Square more than live up to the elegant building. Among the tenants are Mont Blanc, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Audemars Piguet.

The Jameel Square website describes the building as “designed to incorporate the traditional elegance with the comforts, efficiency, and IT connectivity that modern technology provides”. Jameel Square offers leasing for retail and office spaces and covers a total of 8,000 sqm.

First Boots In Ksa Opens

Jeddah was the first to get a taste of the UK Boots franchise which opened up on March 29 in Mall of Arabia. In an official statement from Boots, Managing Director of Boots International, Gordon Farquhar said the expansion was part of the overall strategy to make Boots a truly international brand. The UK brand has branches in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE.

SAUDI ARAMCO: CHILDREN WITH DOWN’S SYNDROME IN JEDDAH Saudi Aramco recently organized an event to coincide with the International Day for Down’s Syndrome. Held at the Corniche in Jeddah, the event provided the day’s entertainment for more than 300 special-needs children. The program included children’s entertainment, awareness lectures and health-related guidance and tips

for those caring for children with special needs. Wadi Mur By Turki Shoaib

The main valley that empties into Wadi Rabigh, the canyon-like Wadi Mur is an alternative to visiting the more popular and easily accessible, Wadi Rabigh. The valley crosses from the coastal town of Rabigh all the way to the Madinah highway, with many accessible Wadi tributaries, culminating at the surprisingly lush Wadi AlKhadrah in the east. Historically the area was a part of the Higrah Trail and maintains the ruins of farming communities and old forts along its narrow gorges.

Interesting areas deep in the Wadi are harder to reach and require some serious off-roading, but have the advantage of being more secluded, giving you more privacy for camping and hiking. One of our favorite areas, which is easy to get to, is a smaller valley near the village of Mugainah. The

wadi is quite narrow with steep, gorge-like walls and smooth river stones. In past years the valley was popular for its small pools of water and concentrated areas of dense vegetation near small springs, but with the recent development of the Rabigh Dam, the area has been transformed into something DESTINATION JEDDAH 19

quite unique. In the rainy season, a lake forms behind the dam creating a green oasis of abundant plant and insect life. Dragonflies are everywhere. Flowers are in bloom. Fields of seasonal grasses dot the landscape. The area is quite impressive and is perfect for a day trip or some camping. To reach the valley, heading north towards Yanbu, take the Petro Rabigh Exit (927) towards the right. Continuing straight, the paved road will climb to the top of the gorge overlooking the main stretch of Wadi Rabigh. There is an interesting stopping place on this road that provides an incredible view of the valley to your left, right before the road descends to the valley. The entrance to the Wadi is through a small tributary wadi at the point where the road climbs a slope of reinforced concrete at 22°48.745N - 39°26.447E, past the Village of Tamayah. Follow the tributary to the left until you reach the lake. The trail can be confusing as many well-used tracks lead off towards the village of Mugainah. At 22°48.985N - 39°25.332E you will see the remains of a fort and canals of a possible water system. Continuing down the wadi you will reach the lake before Rabigh Dam, which could possibly be dry in the summer months. To access the other side of the lake, hike over the ridge to your right towards the north. Alternatively you can access this part of the wadi via a very difficult track over the ridge and through the wadi near the town of Mugainah at 22°50.767N - 39°26.912E. As with any trip to a Wadi in Saudi Arabia, beware of sudden flash flooding and always camp in elevated sites on the sides of the Wadi.

Bringing Islamic know-how to light

The dark ages: What were they exactly? We all remember studying them at some point in school but what many people don’t remember is that the Dark Ages were. While Europe and most of Asia lay in ruins after the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Islamic world flourished through a golden age of discovery and development. From the 7th century, up until the 17th century, Muslims achieved great things in the name of Science. Did you know that Muslim scholars were the first to build gliders and public hospitals as well as many other things we take for granted today. All this is brought to light by 1001 inventions – a collective effort on the part of historians to uncover the truth. A book was launched in 2006, and an exhibition followed which was widely toured in the UK. What started as a UK touring exhibition proved so popular, and attracted such critical acclaim, that there is currently an interactive exhibition at the World famous Science Museum in London, UK. There’s also a film entitled “1001 inventions and the Library of Secrets” which can be viewed on the website 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Here at Destination Jeddah, we have delved through this book, and we bring you our top five favourite inventions 1: Al-Zahrawi’s surgical instruments Al-Zahrawi was a 10th-century surgeon who practised in Cordoba. His work was hugely significant in Europe and many of his instruments are still in use today. Examples include the syringe, forceps and the bone saw. So, next time you go to the hospital, keep a lookout for history in action! 2: Al-Idrisi’s world map An Andalusian cartographer (map maker) by the name of Al-Idrisi created one of the most advanced and elaborate maps of his time in 1154. Travelers used this map for several centuries as it contained detailed descriptions of the Christian north as well as the Islamic world, Africa and the Far East.

3: The Camera Obscure Ibn al Haytham was one of the greatest scientists of the 10th century. He made many contributions to the field of optics, and he was the pioneer in explaining how vision works! Using the Chinese invention of the pinhole camera (Camera Obscure), Ibn al Haytham was able to explain how light travels in straight lines from the object to form an inverted image on the retina. 4: Ibn Firnasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; flying contraption Next time you board a flight on Saudi Airlines, spare a thought for Abbas Ibn Firnas. He was a renowned 9th century inventor. At the age of 65, he built a basic hang glider and launched himself from the side of a mountain! They really must have been relaxed about health and safety laws then! Some accounts claim that his attempt at controlled flight resulted in him remaining airborne for several minutes...until he landed badly and hurt his back. 5: The Elephant Clock This is one of the greatest engineering feats accomplished by the Muslims. Al Jazari, a prominent Arab inventor of the 13th century created a water clock. The timing mechanism incorporates a water filled bucket hidden inside a model of an elephant. In addition to the technological achievements of the clock, it also presented the concept of multi-culturalism. The elephant represents the Indian and African cultures, decorated with Chinese dragons, a Greek water mechanism and an Arab turban. The exhibition has proven so popular, that plans to tour it around the world are well under way. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hope that Jeddah gets to witness this in the near future.....

In April, 24 films about Saudi Arabia were shown all with varying themes about the Kingdom and the Gulf at large from April 12-14. Reem S. Al-Bayyat’s ‘Doll’ deals with the theme of child marriages or the story of an Iraqi shoemaker who attempts to return to his life after being wrongfully detained by coalition forces in Iraq for two years; the movies cover a wide range of topics and themes. Best of all the festival is highlighting Saudi talent in a field not often recognized back in their own country. Child’s Pain by Waleed Matari which narrates the events surrounding a child dealing with the disillusion of her family, when the only person close to her goes missing. The reaction of foreign passengers to a suitcase owned by an Arab man are recorded to portray the stereotypes that exist in the West in Mohammed Al Tamimi’s The Bag. A tribute to the late poet Nizar Qabbani, Yearning of a Poet, portrays Qabbani in the present and his nostalgia of the past in a short film by Tareq Aldakheel, stated the festivals press statement. Anggi Makki’s Raksa Motaghameda (Frozen Dance) is the inspiring story of a young man who trains to win a marathon so that he can cure his ill father. In a touching portrayal of children, Mousa Thunayan’s Al Asfour Al Azrak (Blue Bird) depicts the determined struggle of a handicapped boy who has been separated from his wheelchair. A family man risks his life by jumping from the tallest wall in the world to provide his ill daughter with medication, in Jasim Ali Oqaili’s Ta’er Al Faneek (The Phoenix Bird). La Yujad Siwa Bakaya Dajaj Makli Fi Al Salaja (There is only Leftovers of Fried Chicken in the Fridge) by Nawaf Almhanna gives us an insight into how the course of our lives can change in a few minutes. Submissions in the ‘Lights’ segment from Saudi Arabia include Thieab Al Dossary’s animated short film, Tayeb Altalif (Harmony by Distress) which explores the attitudes about prejudice and segregation and the symbolism that surrounds the many shades of discrimination. Director Abdulmuhsin Almutairi narrates the story of a woman and the problems she has with her brother as a result of various family matters in AlKenaa (The Mask). A man comes to life after his burial when one of his killers leaves the door open in Jari Tajmeel (Loading) directed by Hanna Saleh Al Fassi.

The Postman 1994

Entering the Italian Consulate we noticed people from many different countries and cultures sharing this beautiful night in Jeddah together. We were all there to celebrate this year’s 4th European Film Festival. The award winning film called, The Postman, would be starting shortly and everyone was making their way to their seats. A young boy in a plaid Tommy Hilfiger shirt walked around with trays of refreshments for the audience which added such a unique, personal touch to the evening. Although the night air contained very little breeze, someone with foresight had stationed fans to make us all feel a little more comfortable. The beginning scenes included fishermen casting nets on the still waters of this tiny island from very old fishing boats. The father of Mario admits to his son during dinner one night that his life of fishing is not for everyone and that he should consider some other type of employment. Meanwhile, Chilean, Pablo Neruda, a famous poet, has been exiled to this island much to the happiness of its inhabitants. As seen on the news, however, the homes of the island don’t look very comfortable nor are they what one would expect for someone so wealthy and successful. However, we are drawn to love and enjoy the very simple life in this quaint little town by the end of the film. Mario gets a job delivering the mail to Pablo; and over time, the two of them drum up a unique bond where they

share their love of poetry and life. Mario falls in love and begs Pablo for help in winning the woman of his dreams. He somehow softens Pablo’s character and finds the help he needs to continue onto the next stage of his life. The Postman is an entertaining film that pulls at the strings of humanity and the humility in all of us. The film, The Postman, reaffirms the fact that some of the best things in life are free to those that open their eyes. Following the film, the audience was invited to enjoy an Italian Buffet of spicy Penna Arabiatta, Lasagna, fried vegetables, and Bruschetta. This wonderful dinner event was followed by chocolate cake and a refreshing slice of their very heavenly Italian Tiramisu. A beautiful evening in Jeddah was had by all. DESTINATION JEDDAH 25

The book is a collective work of images created by 30 Saudi women photographers. The first exhibition held on April 11 to 13, 2010 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the Main Hall of Elegant Homes. The majority of attendees were mixed between Saudi ministers, business men and women and young women who had come to support Ms. Abdelrazek and the other women photographers. Furthermore, Khaled Almaeena, editor in chief of Arab News, opened the ceremony where Dr. Suhair Al-Quraishi, the Dean of Dar Al-Hekma College, was also present.

Rania Abdulrazek, a Saudi Arabian Photographer has launched a book called “Photography Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women.”

“Photography Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women.” Exhibit is a collection of Saudi Women Professionals and Amateurs photographs. The aim of the book and Exhibition is to help promote positive images of Saudi Arabian Women to the West and within our Kingdom through photography. It is important to show progress and give encouragement to other Saudi women into achieving their goals throughout the world. This exhibit will create another bridge of communication “artistically” between the West and East. The book, printed in English, and composed of 148 pages, took over two years in the making. It contains 115 images and is divided into the following five chapters: Vision of life, portraiture, abstractions, Saudi Arabian culture and photo art. The exhibition was sponsored by Saudi Oger LTD and Elegant Home. The launching of “Photography Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women.” and the exhibit were a success of their kind.

Louboutin comes to Jeddah The most recent addition to Khayat Center’s luxurious designer stores was none other than famed shoe designer, Christian Louboutin. The beautifully designed shoes with the distinctive red soles have been a fixture in the fashion world and in every shoelover’s fantasy since the Louboutin first opened his boutique in Paris in 1992. With the opening of the Jeddah flagship store marking Louboutin’s first foray into the Middle East, one could be sure that this event would not pass by quietly.

The gorgeously appointed store is eyecatching and dramatic, with Louboutin’s creations nestling in numerous floor-toceling recesses in the wall. The opening on April 10th invited shoe lovers to visit the stand-alone boutique and even get whatever shoes they purchased signed by the designer himself. According to excited customers, the French designer was extremely personable and even remarked that Jeddah was his favorite city. And Louboutin may just become Jeddah’s favorite shoe designer.

On the high streets of Jeddah, one can easily find half a dozen eyecatching and trendy boutiques – the brainchildren of hip Jeddahwi entrepreneurs with a love of retail. What is new however is the concept of an up market boutique that has all the glitz and glamour of the rest with one important difference – they target the discerning fashionista…that is probably still in diapers. Wid Harthy and Shahira Al-Ghalayini saw a gap in the market and jumped at the opportunity in March 2008. “We saw a need in Jeddah’s retail market for trendy children’s clothes that were otherwise not available. As all Jeddah natives know, Jeddah got its start as a commercial hub, a crossroutes of trade where merchants from all over the area and far beyond that met and exchanged highly-sought after products and goods. 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Al-Khaskia Market is the modern throwback to Jeddah’s commercial roots. Located in the heart of Old Jeddah, visitors literally turn a corner and find themselves in the middle of this lively market. Throngs of shoppers of a dozen different nationalities stroll the small streets, pausing to admire one of the many brightly lit shop windows. Al-Khaskia embodies the diversity of Jeddah with at least five languages within earshot at any given time and the art of haggling transcending language in this area of Jeddah. It is an assortment of little shops selling literally anything you can imagine. Toys, gifts, women’s accessories and clothing, incense and oils, religious souvenirs, footwear and everything in between. Al-Khaskia’s appeal lies in the fact that bargaining is part and parcel of the experience – you are expected to haggle over the prices in a friendly battle of the financial wits with the vendors.

Al-Khaskia also sells things in bulk, which is especially suited to party and wedding planners who buy intricate ceramic and glass party favors at a fraction of the price they would normally go for on the high streets of Tahlia. Although making your way through the dense crowds and battling the ferocious heat are a few of the obstacles visitors to Khaskia should expect to deal with, the advantages of visiting this lively and dynamic far outweigh the cons.

The Red Sea, like every ecosystem, is full of beautiful and intriguing creatures. The most beautiful are most times the most dangerous and poisonous. The rainforests have their poisonous creepy crawlies as well as more obvious jungle cats and alligators all out looking for food. The underwater ecosystems are no different with brightly colored fish warning of poisons along with displays of sharp teeth to ward off would-be predators. Given the multitude of dangerous fish awaiting the unsuspecting diver, it’s a good idea to arm yourself with the right information about the realities of the underwater world. The right information will give you the confidence to explore the wonders of the Red Sea safely. Also, to know what to do when such an injury does occur. There are many useful books and websites that can provide information about avoiding 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH

and treating marine injuries. The Diver’s Alert Network (DAN) should be contacted for advice whenever a diving injury occurs. contact with anything underwater. Do not prod or grasp anything, and avoid kicking or stepping on anything. While diving, maintaining good buoyancy will help keep you off the bottom and out away from harm. Not only does this make sense environmentally, it will also help keep you safe. Also, keep a respectful distance from territorial animals, and keep up-to-date with immunizations such as tetanus. What follows is a description of some of the usual suspects of the Red Seaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dangerous fish.

Common Lionfish (Pterois miles)

The physically unique and brilliantly colored Lionfish has magnificent featherlike venomous dorsal fins coming out of its back. The Lionfish is usually a slow moving creature that seems to hover midwater displaying its banded and colored poisonous fins. When threatened, the lionfish will lower its head so that its spines are directed at its attacker. The sting of a lionfish will make a person quite sick, and a hospital visit is highly recommended. If stung, apply hot water treatment to the affected area for 30-90 minutes, preferably on the way to the hospital.

Spotted Snake Eel (Myrichtus maculosus)

While in reality quite timid, the Moray Eel is a fearsome looking creature. When examining a Moray from a respectful distance you will notice several interesting things about these reef-dwellers. While it may have poor eyesight, the Moray has three rows of icicle like teeth, angulated backwards towards the gullet to prevent its catch from escaping its clenched jaws. A Moray bite is a very serious injury that requires immediate medical attention. Of course, getting to the hospital can be a challenge as Morays are not partial to letting go once they have sunk their many sharp teeth into a target. One animal attack survival manual suggests the following approach to getting the Eel off of the victim: First, do not try to hurt the Moray Eel.This only antagonizes the animal and makes it bite down harder. Second, try to distract the animal by enticing with a treat superior to a human posterior.

The Masked Pufferfish (above) has a very potent neurotoxin in itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s liver, ovaries and skin which can cause hallucinations and can often be fatal.

Stonefish (below) have thirteen venomous dorsal spines which deliver poison on impact. The venom is a potent poison which can be excruciating and even fatal.

The playful Longjawed Squirrelfish (below) has a sharp gill plate that causes an extremely painful sting.

The manual suggests opening a can of sardines. Hopefully, this bribe will be sufficient for the Moray to release its grip of the victim permitting him or her to seek that much needed visit to the emergency room. DESTINATION JEDDAH 55

The Orangespine Surgeonfish (above) is less terroritorial than its other cousins like the Sohal Surgeonfish but it’s still a good idea to keep your distance.

Respect the Moray’s personal space, and always keep your fingers and hands away so that it does not confuse them for fish. Don’t feed these creatures since they may get accustomed to this and may end up attacking other swimmers and divers when they do not produce treats. (Not to mention that this will be bad for the Eel’s health; nobody wants to see a Moray with lovehandles).

Masked Puffer (Arothron diadematus)

You will scarcely find an animal less aggressive than the Pufferfish, and yet it is still quite the trouble maker. Inside the liver, ovaries and skin is a very potent neurotoxin, Tetratoxin, that will not dissipate after cooking. The initial effects of the poison may only be very uncomfortable hallucinations, but over time the poison could lead to death. The Japanese dish, Fugu, is made of pufferfish meat by specially certified chefs. When ordering Fugu, you pay the bill before you start eating! It seems that the temptation of eating Fugu is greater that the fear of death, especially since there is no known antidote.

Squirrelfish (Sargocentron spiniferum)

Next on our list is the Squirrelfish. Scientifically it is known as Sargocentron spiniferum. This very playful and curious fish hovers in tunnels, crevices and under overhangs. It has a very sharp gill plate which can potentially cause extreme pain if it were to pierce your flesh. Local fishermen have named it the Umm Kulthum fish, after the famous Arab singer. When stung by the Squirrelfish’s spine, the fisherman suffering from the injury stays up all night long crooning, reminiscent of many of the songs of the very famous Egyptian singer, Umm Kulthum (1904 -1975). 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Stingrays have very venomous barbs on their tail for selfdefense like the Bluespotted Stingray (a. Barbs that strike people in the torso or heart can be fatal.

Orangespine Surgeonfish (Naso elegans)

Unlike the Squirrelfish, the Surgeonfish’s defenses are not poisonous, but should still be respected. At the base of the tails of these tropical species are a pair of very sharp blades, as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. Surgeonfish are not usually aggressive, but they are territorial, defending patches of algae which provide sustenance for themselves and their offspring. Avoid touching or hovering over areas that are obviously being defended by surgeonfish. This can be difficult at times as they prefer very shallow water, which can be in the area you are trying to enter the sea. In general, most of their threats are false threats, but do not push your luck too far with Surgeonfish.

Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa)

Being poisoned by a Stonefish is a very serious injury. Stonefish are masters of disguise, blending in perfectly with their surroundings and appearing like a rock on the sea bottom. They have 13 venomous dorsal spines which deliver the poison on impact. This venom is a particularly potent poison that inflicts excruciating pain and can be fatal to humans if not treated immediately. The stonefish is one of the most deadly fish in the world for this reason. The extreme treatment of limb amputation is sometimes the only option. If stung by a Stonefish, apply heat treatment. Submerge the affected area in non scalding water (43-45 C) for 30-90 minutes. To avoid being stung by a Stonefish in the first place, keep off the bottom whilst swimming. When walking the shallow water keep your feet in contact with the ground and slide them over the surface. If you do come across a Stonefish and are walking in this shuffling motion you will harmlessly push it away rather than be pierced by its poisonous dorsal spines. Always wear boots with hard soles and long shafts to minimize this risk.

The Spotted Snake Eel is an ambush predator, stealthily seeking prey. Although it mimics behaviors of it’s venomous cousin, the sea snake’s bite is nonpoisonous.

Rabbitfish (Siganidae)

These innocent looking fish like to hide in sandy lagoons and get their name from their tiny mouths which supposedly resemble that of a rabbit. They have very sharp dorsal fins which produce venom. If pierced, a person inflicted experiences a lot of pain and swelling. For relief, immerse the affected area in hot water in order to denature the poison. Bluespotted Stingrays (Taeniura lymma) The late Steve Irvin, a world famous crocodile hunter, nature lover and TV presenter, met an untimely end because of an encounter with a stingray. These elasmobranchs have very venomous barbs on their tail that they can use for self defense. A stab in the torso can kill a human, just as what happened to the crocodile hunter himself when the barb pierced his heart.

Even the small Bluespotted stingrays have powerful barbs on their tail that has struck people in their legs and arms. This very painful event has on many occasions required a surgical procedure for the removal of the remains of the barb. The healing period that follows this surgery is often very painful.

Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae)

The Scorpionfish are only slightly more likely to be spotted by divers, but are still very good at camouflage. Just like Stonefish, they remain motionless as they wait to ambush their prey. To avoid being pierced by their poisonous dorsal fins, follow the same safety precautions as for the stonefish.

Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) These underwater Doberman’s are well armed predators, with very sharp teeth. The larger ones can be very territorial and aggressive, and all of them are attracted by shiny objects which they might confuse with small

Shark Shark is an apex predator, fortunately for this species and the environment Shark fishing of any kind is banned in the Kingdom so we are not to mess around with mother nature anymore. Gruesome piles of dead shark in the markets should be something of the past and not to be seen anymore. Sharks have been known to assist and keep alive lost divers. One diver lost in the sea for more than two nights, person was exhausted but the shark kept him awake so not to sink and drown. Eating shark is detrimental to your health. Shark contains high levels of methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin that affects the brain, spinal cord and liver. High mercury levels has also been linked to infertility in men. Shark soup or ecotours? Sharks are much more valuable alive than dead.

Homo Sapiens Homo Sapien is mostly terrestrial, but occasionally ventures out into the oceans. Beware of this sea explorer and fish collector. Homo Sapien displays random acts of behavior, from extreme kindness and integration with other species to exercising violent behavior such as skewering metal probes into fish and coral. Homo sapiens are often unpredictable, hunting for prey even when not hungry and leaving behind a trail of plastics and other waste that kills other sea creatures long after the Homo Sapien is long gone. Rescue & Safety Diving Training The Marsa Al-Ahlam diving centers has officially established a deal with the Royal Saudi Navy to instruct 32 trainees in Rescue and Safety diving. A Taste of Indonesia: Dindin, Satay, & Rendan, Oh My!

Indonesian food is a well-known favorite among Jeddah locals. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s variety of succulently spicy meat and chicken dishes and flavorful soups and appetizers appeal to anyone who enjoys a filling meal at surprisingly affordable prices. Indonesian restaurants offering takeout meals and catering can be found all over Jeddah but there are a distinct few who bring out the best in this delectable cuisine. Indonesian food is typically very flavorful, using spices and vegetables not often used in other dishes. Such favorites as satay (grilled meat or chicken on a stick), rendan (Indonesian curry made with either chicken or meat), and dindin (dried fried beef) are great accompanied with a bowl of steamed rice. This cuisine also features krupuk (crispy prawn-flavored crackers) which is usually eaten along with the main dish. Although many Jeddahwis have no doubt visited their local Indonesian restaurant around the corner for a quick and convenient campur, a dish of white rice accompanied with several small servings of other dishes. This is also a great way to introduce yourself to Indonesian cuisine. Nestled between Chamelle Plaza and Gardenia on Arafat St. sits the small Italian style speciality sandwich store. Standing like something out of a parallel universe, it is the spitting image of an Italian butcher’s shop and once you push the white door open you feel instantly transported to a old Italy. Wooden shelves flank every angle of the place with all sorts of imported goodies like chocolate powder from the Dominican Republic, packaged in Germany, to olive oil and canned tomatoes.

Every sandwich is hand made in front of you but this is no Subway. All of the ingredients are meticulously chopped sliced and turned into sandwich masterpieces before your very eyes. If you’re in a rush this probably shouldn’t be your first choice since the

order takes generally longer because the ingredients are all much fresher and are carefully refrigerated to keep them as crisp and tasty as possible.

Mister Burger If you’ve ever had a lazy day, the thought of biting into a rich juicy burger has probably crossed your mind at least once.

If that’s the case then Mister Burger should definitely be on your list of places to visit. Located roughly halfway between Al-Kayyal and Sari, Mister Burger with his burger-ific head and smart green jacket does the burger justice. All too often, burger restaurants overcook or simply turn meat to carbon and slap it between two buns. Mister Burger is different. He even says so on his menu urging you to have it “my way”. With thick and juicy burger patties “it’s not new, it’s different,” not to mention it’s one of the few if not the only place to serve certified black angus beef.

Although the location is small and lacks a family section, it makes up for it by hitting you in the face with the sweet smell of a grilled steak. What makes this place even better is that everything hovers around the SR15 mark so you won’t be breaking the bank. With the expected 50’s paraphernalia littering the walls, the entire place is a good spot to catch some relaxing bites into a delicious burger despite the busy traffic zipping by just outside the door. Areeka is a popular Hijazi breakfast dish made of dates, usually served with Arabic coffee as a dessert or as a snack.

Ingredients

1 cup of brown flour 1 cup of white flour 2 glasses of warm water Salt 2 cups of seedless dates Half-cup butter 1 tsp Cardamom powder

Preparation Method: 1. Mix both flour with warm water and add half teaspoon of salt to the mix. Cook in the oven for 20 minutes at a medium temperature. 2. Mix the cooked dough in a bowl, along with the dates, cardamom and butter. Make sure that the dough is still hot as you will need to mix all ingredients together by hand. 3. Put the mix in a plate, garnish it with almond and serve it warm.

Mystery Diner a vegetable salad Pick Perch with By Frederik J Whitehead *Frederik J Whitehead is the head chef at Voila restaurant. Often associated with French and central European culture, potato gratin is a popular dish found around the world, especially in the Middle East. Not ideal if you’re looking to save on calories, it is often served to accompany a meat dish.

Ingredients

1 red pepper 1/2 cucumber 1 yellow zucchini 3 large Chinese cabbage leaves Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar

Preparation Method:

1. Cut the peppers in half and remove the stalk and the seeds, then cut the flesh into 5mm dice and place in a mixing bowl. Cut the cucumber in half and remove the seeds with a spoon, then cut into 5mm dice and add to the mixing bowl. Top and tail the yellow zucchini and cut lengthways into 5mm thick strips, then into 5mm dice. Add to the bowl. Lay the cabbage leaves flat on top of one another and cut into 5mm strips, then into 5mm dice. Add to the bowl. 2. Preheat a barbecue, grill or griddle pan and the oven to 180˚C/gas 4. Season the pick perch fillets with salt and pepper, and brush with a little of the olive oil. Place the fillets, skin side to the heat, on the barbecue, grill or griddle pan and cook for 1 minute on each side. Transfer to an ovenproof dish and cook in the oven for a further 6 minutes.

3. Add the sherry vinegar and remaining olive oil to the diced vegetables and toss together. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then put on a serving dish and top with the cooked pick perch fillets.

Le Notre (Tahlia) I’ve always appreciated a good grilled calamari salad, and though the first thought that comes to mind when someone mentions “Le Notre” is delicious calorie-packed desserts, you might be surprised to find out that they serve some really good lunches and dinners. As a location, it’s ideal. On the corner of Tahlia at Maidan al Saif, it’s easy to find. The service was friendly, and though slightly hesitant and confused, they did make up for it with eagerness to please. The cocktails we ordered were pretty good too, (the passion fruit cocktail is especially refreshing now that the heat is returning). For a main course, the grilled beef fillet comes with greens and potato wedges. For such a simple dish it was both tasty and satisfying, and when it was ordered medium rare, they got it right. As to the shisha, (yes, Le Notre does serve shisha in Jeddah) there is a special shisha section in the glassed-in terrace. That’s good because then people who don’t want the smoke to ruin their dining experience can sit in the main dining area. The terrace is also lovely during lunch, due to all the natural light and foliage surrounding you. Now the dessert..... out of the wide variety of mouth-watering deserts, I had to limit myself to one. The millefeuille. It comes with a delicious raspberry sauce that’s just a tiny bit tart, which to me makes all the difference. All in all, it’s definitely going up in my list of places to take friends to. Especially if they’re from out of town and we want a relaxing dining experience. DESTINATION JEDDAH 65

Islamic Centers: What goes on behind closed doors Jeddah’s

It’s difficult to keep politics out of everyday life, especially when it comes to faith. Nothing has become more politicized than Islam and centers which cater to giving prospective students a fuller understanding of it. If you, like so many others have grown to be afraid of Islamic Centers, then you aren’t alone. In the US, we’ve given up some of our freedoms in exchange for a wet blanket of security. What frightens me isn’t what Islam means to me personally but how much the world has changed. When it comes to freedom of speech and freedom of thought, diverging ideas seem to go by the wayside and there seems to only be the mainstream. What about the rest of us who want to learn more in these Islamic Centers but not raise red flags at the Department of Homeland Security at the same time? How can we come to any kind of understanding of one another if we all stay in our own little worlds? Over the 200 years of the American union we’ve learnt to give all sorts of groups their respective rights from; African Americans, the elderly, to the disabled. But America has never struggled as much as it has in trying to understand the Muslim population within its own borders. The cultures between East and West are already vastly different from one another. To begin praying and following a different religion on top of that isn’t easy. I first visited an Islamic Center in Saudi Arabia in 2006 just after my father passed away. The first time I entered the lecture room, I noticed that many of the students were wearing long black abayas, black scarves, black socks and black gloves which gave me quite a fright initially. Over time, I found that much of this black covering was because of their casual attire underneath and is a habit for many women but not actually a requirement of the center. I also found that the Islamic Center had a few activities that were actually quite fun. These included several parties, a fashion show, and an interesting lecture followed by tea, coffee, and an assortment of snacks from Arabic treats to Dunkin’ Donuts. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

My feelings about Islam are completely different, and they are my own….from my own experiences and my own perspectives. They’re not redigested versions made by someone else. No matter which religion you follow, I strongly suggest that you to take a tour of an Islamic Center and talk to the Muslims inside before making any assumptions about them or Islam. Take one of their classes on comparative religions. Listen, learn, and then form your own opinions. There’s really nothing to be afraid of.

Nelly Dakheel had the courage to take that step last year and has transformed her home and family into eating organic food and cooking macrobiotically. Macrobiotic cooking is about being true to yourself and body. “After online research and attending a course in Dubai, I decided to go fully organic in my home,” Dakheel said. “My children and husband resisted at first, but now they’ve gotten used to it and actually ask for it.
