Dear DJ, I just wanted to tell that you guys are just so amazing. Everytime my dad brings in the dj maganzine me and my brother fights for it .I really enjoy reading the magazine.Hoping for more........ Your biggest fan, Sharon.D shady. Dear Editor,
First of all, let me thank you for your wonderful publication. As a new resident in Jeddah, it has proved an invaluable tool in figuring out where to go, how to get there, and where to get what we need. However, we have found one thing lacking. .. where is a good spot for a brother to go to sip a coffee and study? My husband is always looking for a good spot, but has yet to find something as nice as the bookstore cafe’s we got used to in the US. Somewhere neither too crowded nor too loud? Which cafes are the most book-friendly in Jeddah? Thanks, Umm and Abu Sayf Dear Reader, We have several new book cafes and small cafes where you can sit and enjoy a coffe and snack while reading a book or revising for an exam. To name a few: Bridges, Pie Sweet Pie, Andalusia, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and Starbuck corniche tends to be quieter and more isolated. To find the locations of these places, you can refer to the Restaraunt directory for their numbers.

Why Not An Early Wedding? Well, it’s May and Jeddah is in the midst of the wedding season. While this fact may be a source of great happiness to some, many others are dreading the inconvenience of attending weddings that last till the wee hours of the morning. Many couples seem to disregard the fact that their guests have children, jobs, sleepy drivers...basically, a life. Stumbling into work the next day with the remnants of last night’s makeup on your face, fifty bobby pins in your hair, and dark circles under your eyes is not a good look for anyone. So why aren’t early weddings catching on here in Jeddah? It is unusual for a wedding to begin before 11 PM...but what’s wrong with that being the ending time rather than the beginning? An early wedding ensures that everyone involved will be more awake and less inconvenienced. If you are one of those planning a wedding in the upcoming months, DJ would like to offer its congratulations... and ask you to consider an early wedding. At the very least, your wedding will stand out in the crowd!
DJ Suggests… Donating Leftover Party Food
One of the most enjoyable aspects of attending a wedding or large-scale event is being able to partake in the beautiful dinner buffet. The food is an important part of the event and no expense is spared in making sure that guests have a diverse and delicious dining experience. However, it makes DJ cringe to see so much food possibly go to waste when, for so many others, food is not as readily available. So why not have a feel-good wedding and donate any leftover food to Fa’ed Ta’am? This local charity association will come straight to your door to collect leftover food, then distribute it to those in need. The combination of a good party and a good act is unbeatable...so celebrate your happiness by sharing it with others! 6

To Saudi Women Making Their Voice Heard Voter registration began in the last week of April for the September municipal elections, in which half of the Kingdom’s municipal council members will be elected for the positions. While voting is open to all adult Saudi males, the privilege has again not been extended to include Saudi females. In response to statements that women are not interested in voting for, several females showed up at a voter registration center in Jeddah to prove their interest and pride in the Saudi election process. Described as a “peaceful confrontation” by the registration officials, the women were prevented from entering the offices, but their point was made: Saudi women have a voice and are simply asking for the platform to make it heard respectfully. DJ applauds the efforts of these brave women who expressed an important desire in such a calm and organized manner.
Thumbs down to... Irresponsible Car Parking
Come on drivers – it’s not enough to pay attention to road rules while driving. It’s equally important to pay attention to where and how you park your car! Parking lots have stripes to designate parking spaces – the lines mean that you must park between the lines, not on top of them or diagonally across them. Don’t take up more than one space. Don’t park behind someone and block them in (even if you only plan to leave your car for a moment…delays happen and you may end up preventing someone from leaving.) Don’t park in the designated handicapped parking space unless you’re really handicapped. The rules are there for a reason; to ensure a safe driving and parking environment for everyone to enjoy. No one is exempt, seriously, even for quick pick-ups/drop-offs…pay attention to where you’re temporarily stopping and DO NOT leave your car unattended or abandon it!

Weddings of Jeddah:
An Art Unto Themselves
By Dina Ismail
It’s that time of the year again...wedding invitations are flooding in and most of Jeddah will be getting ready to begin the wedding season in our fair city: a dizzying display of marital love, towering flowering arrangements and the most glamorous dresses this side of the Oscars. Like almost everything in Jeddah, wedding traditions are very specific and unique to this part of the world and even this part of the Kingdom. For the uninitiated, the art of attending a Saudi wedding in Jeddah (everything from accepting an invitation to congratulating the happy couple) can be a complicated maze to navigate...but that’s all part of the fun!
Punctuality: Very Passe One of the biggest aspects of Jeddah weddings that seem to shock foreigners is the timings. Speaking conservatively, if invited to a wedding, don’t expect to be home before 2AM - 3AM (yes, really!). Most families send invitations with a vague-ish start time, so be prepared to make some Arab time adjustments. If you are prompt and punctual at 10PM, be prepared to spend a good chunk of time in 10 DESTINATION JEDDAH
sumptuously decorated wedding halls...all by yourself. To avoid this, it may be a good idea to call friends who are also attending and arrange to arrive at the same time. Similarly, more and more invitations are requesting an RSVP and provide a telephone number in order to do so...however, this isn’t a requirement, so don’t worry too much about it (yes, DJ has just spared you an awkward phone call…)
Glamming It Up It has been said many times that a wedding in Jeddah is the Oscars of this society. For the women of Saudi, a wedding is the perfect opportunity to showcase a new gown or hairstyle to an all-female gathering. No cocktail dress or little black dress casual interpretation - Jeddahwis prefer the “more is more” concept when it comes to attending a wedding. Evening gowns are the norm and in most cases, attendees will have their hair and makeup professionally done (better book those salon appointments in advance, ladies!) Although some weddings are held on a smaller scale and have a more casual dress code, a good rule of thumb is that if you recognize the venue name (Leilaty, Park Hyatt, Hilton, etc.), then the dress code is likely formal. One caveat to this is if the wedding is being held in a private home, then attendees may not be expected to show up in full evening wear unless the house can accommodate a large number of guests (between 300 - 500); in that case, dress as if the wedding is taking place at a ballroom. Elderly ladies usually dress more conservatively, sometimes in a formal thobe so somewhere between the two is acceptable. One last tip, these air-conditioned wedding halls can be quite chilly for those not used to it, so be sure to bring a warm shawl or wrap, but ensure it’s glittery enough to match your gown!
Dinner & Dancing Keep in mind that the actual wedding is the last event in a series of confusingly similar events, but that this is the main attraction...what everyone has been waiting for. The wedding is more of a party than an actual ceremony; although some symbolic gestures are still observed such as the exchange of the rings and the more traditional gifting of a set of jewelry to the bride in front of attendees. Upon entering the hall, the close female relatives of the bride and groom stand in a line at the door to greet guests and accept congratulations - watch those in front of you to see whether it’s a handshake or kiss-kiss situation. After greeting the families, women select a table at their discretion but usually get up immediately to circulate and socialize over Arabic coffee and canapes while waiting for the “zafa” (the procession of the bride and groom through the ballroom and to the stage.) The male relatives of the bride and groom enter the hall briefly to take pictures with the couple (you may see attendees scrambling for their veils at this point) to the ululatings of attendees. The zafa, which can take place quite late at night (or in the wee hours of the morning, depending on how you look at it) is followed by a buffet-style dinner. Although more and more weddings are opting for a DJ nowadays, the unbeatable music stylings of a “tagaga”, a traditional female singer DESTINATION JEDDAH 11
Reader’s Stories Dear DJ, I’m a newcomer to Jeddah and I’ve been intrigued by all the women I see wearing niqabs…so a few weeks ago I visited Balad with a friend to buy some niqabs. We found them surprisingly soft and cool to wear, so we put them on in the store along with matching hijabs. It afforded us a degree of anonymity which we expected, but what we didn’t expect was how comfortable, accepted, and invisible we felt as we glided through the crowds.
who is accompanied by rhythmic drumming and sometimes other instruments, never fail to get the crowd to their feet Younger attendees dance as their mothers (and potential motherin-laws!) look on and it’s always a nice sight to see the older attendees joining in on the fun on the dance floor. A particularly charming custom is when the mother of the bride and the mother of groom dance together and are gradually joined by other close female relatives of the couple, accompanied by the Jeddah wedding crowd-pleaser “Al Fulan Kullahom”, a song which calls the families of the bride and groom to dance and celebrate. After dinner, the couple have usually retired for the night, but in some cases, the bride will linger to greet her friends and family. This is the perfect opportunity to offer your congratulations as it may be awkward to attempt to do so when the couple is on stage and in the spotlight.
Also Keep In Mind...
Usually, only very close friends or family of the bride and groom purchase gifts for them, but if you would like to do so, then don’t bring the present to the wedding itself but rather send it to the newlyweds’ house the next day or send it to any time before the wedding day. Don’t be too shy to join the ladies on the dance floor and try your hand at what is affectionately called the Saudi two-step (the traditional dance of Saudi). A wedding is a social occasion first and foremost, so stay cheery (hold back those yawns!) and prepare to smile and chit chat. 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH
We finished our shopping and approached our driver who had parked nearby. We decided to play a trick on him by entering the car without saying a word…he took one look at these 2 ladies in niqabs and immediately left the car in a hurry, thinking that 2 strangers had mistakenly entered his car! We burst out laughing and quickly removed our niqabs so that he could recognize us. The moral of the story – it’s an adventure to approach a new culture with a sense of humor. The Expat in Disguise Dear DJ, When I had first arrived in Jeddah, I went into a shop and asked the salesperson, “How much is this?” He was on the phone, so he made a hand gesture in response – he squeezed the tips of his fingers together and moved his hand up and down. I was embarrassed and horrified at this response as in Italy (where I’m from), this gesture means “F#*K Off” or “What the f#*k do you want?” Only later did I learn that in the Middle East, it simply means “Wait a minute.”
Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the faux-pas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. Language barriers, rules of the road, cultural missteps...they’re all funny in retrospect. Send in your tales to DJ and we’ll republish them here in an upcoming issue. Jeddah’s Who’s Who Hani Al-Attas
Setting The Standards
In Hospitality By Dina Ismail Photography By FOX Creative
“As far back as my memory takes me, I was born into hospitality.”
A significant beginning to this rare interview with entrepreneur, restaurateur, and one of the most prominent businessmen in Jeddah - Hani Hussein Al-Attas, President of Leylaty Group.
Profile: Who: Hani Hussein Al-Attas What: President of Leylaty Group Where: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Qualifications: Brummana High School,Brummana, Lebanon.1972 Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, North Carolina. BA in Business Administration, Class of 1976. Family: Married to Salwa Al-Fadul and blessed with 4 children: Hashim (26), Tarek (22), Majed (17), Saif (7) 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Since its inception in 1986, the Leylaty Group has dominated the upscale events/ dining scene in Jeddah with such offerings as Byblos, Bubbles, Al-Multaqa, Bharat, Toki and pastry shop Bonbon. The group’s namesake ballrooms have become the go-to event halls for any celebration that requires flawless execution. The Leylaty Ballrooms (1 and 2) lend an air of luxury, taste, and warmth to any event hosted there; indeed they are a hallmark of the essence of all the establishments within the Leylaty Group as a whole – tasteful opulence. Al-Attas offered his insight on why this unique collection of restaurants and events halls has held such staying power in the sometimes fickle Jeddah.
“The restaurateur in me gives me the passion to open the restaurant, and manage them, and excel in them. But the entrepreneur in me allows that flame to continue burning. One is the fuel and one is the flame. The flame will burn out quickly without the fuel. I feel that you have to have both in this business, after Allah’s blessings, to get it right. You must have the passion and the entrepreneurship. It’s not an easy (path); there are many obstacles and hurdles. You need to be a long-distance runner, not a sprinter to persevere.” This spirit of determination and perseverance seems to be inherent in the Al-Attas family as a whole: “My father entered the hospitality business in ‘48,” explained Al-Attas. “I was born in ‘54 so I really was born into the business. My father really carved his name into a rock; he took it the hard way.” The Al-Attas Group, established by Hussein Hashim Al-Attas, has long been a touchstone of Saudi hospitality and a pioneer in the business since its once humble beginnings sixty-odd years ago and for good reason. Today, few Jeddahwis are not familiar with the Al-Attas name, whether in association with
the Leylaty Group today or with the Al-Attas hotels - establishments that were the byword for hospitality during their heyday in Obhur, Jeddah, and Madinah. That legacy is being upheld by successive generations of the AlAttas family, including Hashim and Tarek, two of Al-Attas’ three children who are intimately involved in the day to day running of the AlAttas Group’s holdings.
“The restaurateur in me gives me the passion to open the restaurant, and manage them, and excel in them. But the entrepreneur in me allows that flame to continue burning. One is the fuel and one is the flame. The flame will burn out quickly without the fuel.” DESTINATION JEDDAH 15

The Leylaty ballrooms are firmly established as the top-notch event halls in Jeddah - the catering, the decor, the architecture itself; all speaks to flawless taste and a true sense of opulence. What distinguishes the Leylaty Group restaurants is not based upon the cuisines they offer, since Lebanese, Indian, and Asian food are obviously tried and tested favorites here in Jeddah. It is not even the food itself, although the critically acclaimed fare easily meets the international standards of any fine dining establishment in London, Rome, or Paris. Rather, it is the unique approach that Al-Attas takes in presenting the holistic dining experience. “The restaurant business is the only product I know of where you walk into the shop and choose what you want and consume it fully (in the same moment). Not many commodities are used in this way. You have to excel, you have to perform, you have to deliver hospitality and service, which are two completely different things, to guarantee the satisfaction of the client. That makes this relationship a dialogue rather than a monologue between you and the guest; this is the hospitality part. 16 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The monologue is the service part…because service is taught, but hospitality is inherent. In the restaurant business, you must have (both),” Al-Attas quite eloquently explained over steaming green tea in his tastefully decorated offices located on the Leylaty grounds property. What is presented in Toki, Al-Multaqa, Bharat (their latest foray into high-end Indian cuisine) or any of the Leylaty Group establishments, is an artful combination of delicious food, flawless service, and a true feeling of hospitality. The diner is made to feel that he is the top priority and it is a heady experience. No detail is too small to be thoughtfully considered, from the decor to the music, the smell of the restaurant that greets diners as they enter, to the how the tabletops are arranged and decorated. The same goes for the Leylaty Ballrooms, which over the years, have become every bride’s dream wedding location. “Disrespecting the client is a cardinal sin,” Al-Attas remarked. “Food, ambiance, decor - these are all important evaluations. For the fine dining that we offer, we try to present the
“Maybe one of the readers, or one of my employees for example, reads this interview and sees this very humble beginning, that with Allah’s blessing, became successful. Maybe they will think ‘Okay, why can’t I do that’?”
Much is said about the restaurants, but the man behind the curtain (or in the kitchen, so to speak), Hani Al-Attas, is largely a media mystery. When asked about his previous reluctance to give interviews, AlAttas stated that the thriving spirit of Saudi entrepreneurship was one of the motivating factors: “…this is one of the reasons I decided to come out of my shell. Maybe one of the readers, or one of my employees for example, reads this interview and sees this very humble beginning, that with Allah’s blessing, became successful. Maybe they will think ‘Okay, why can’t I do that’?” Hani Al-Attas is a testament to what the power of sheer determination combined with an intense work ethic can accomplish. His last words to the entrepreneurs of tomorrow? “Stick with your guns, particularly in hospitality because it’s such a people-oriented business. Set clear targets, make sure that those working with you understand these targets and what you expect of them and what your hopes and aspirations are. Don’t let failure and criticism stand in the way of your success.”
three - you should feel that all your senses are fulfilled. Are we perfect at what we do? I’m sure we’re not. But because of our wealth of experience, we are able to hide our mistakes better than others. How to change a dining experience from negative to positive? Through experience - experience is handling mistakes. Failure is one of the biggest motivations for success.” It is difficult to envision a negative experience at any of the group’s establishments - most customers rarely have anything to offer other than rave reviews and some of the older restaurants, such as Toki, have become fixtures in the dining scene of Jeddah. However, with humor and humility, Al-Attas is the first to point out that criticism has indeed been expressed and it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “I accept the criticism with an open heart. I digest it, I try to react to it in the best way I know how and not panic. In this business… you have to stick to your guns, know where your forte is, draw your line from the beginning, and have your target clear. If I don’t believe that this restaurant is going to add something to Jeddah, then I won’t open it just for the sake of opening it.” DESTINATION JEDDAH 17

Q: What should investors look for when buying an overseas property?
A: There are number of fundamental factors
that must be considered; the economy, political stability, and legal system. A favorable exchange rate, tax structure, and financing are other key factors to consider. Historical yield growth, capital growth, local services in an area and transport links also need to be accounted for.

According to Knight Frank research, the central London residential market is the world’s most international big city market, with around 50% of all £2m + sales going to overseas buyers. Prices in prime areas of London will increase by 5% during 2011 according to a Hampton & Carter Jonas Forecast.
Q: How do you think the Saudi Arabia market will fare? Where do you think it will go?
A: Government stimuli and reintroduction
of a new mortgage law are the two key factors that will dictate prices in the Saudi residential market. The current disequilibrium in the market is due to a lack of supply and demographic driven demand. The lack of financing for middle income housing has meant developers are reluctant build units that will cater for this bracket of the population.

Exploring Jeddah’s
Undersea Caves:
Abu Madafeh
By Ahmed Sahab Photography by Ahmed Sahab
Just an hour’s boat ride from the Durrat Al Aroos Resort in north Jeddah is an incredible undersea adventure waiting for intrepid divers to explore. On the day that we set out, we were lucky to experience flat seas – we could see our reflections clearly in the water, resulting in a smooth ride out to Abu Madafeh. 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The most amazing part of our outward boatride was when a big school of dolphins swam beside us for the last 10 minutes of our journey; it was a wonderful feeling seeing these dolphins, completely wild yet so tender. You feel that the dolphin is actually gazing into your eyes - an outstanding emotion – what a gift! We arrived at Abu Madafeh and started preparations for our first dive. We were told that the undersea cave is more than 100 meters in length, so we were actually looking forward to live this adventure, especially since we didn’t know what to expect. We had been warned that sharks usually sleep in caves, especially if there is a current. Sharks will suffocate if they stop swimming – that’s why they seek out caves with a current so that they can remain stationary while the water rushes past their gills. As we entered the cave, we glimpsed beautiful colored corals and many amazing types of fish. The cave is actually formed because of the
DESTINATION JEDDAH 29
continuous growth of the corals which form a tunnel-shape cave. The natural beauty of this undersea vision is enhanced because you can see rays of sunlight every now and then which act as nature’s spotlights on the colorful fish and coral. We were all taking pictures and enjoying the sights when all of the sudden a group of four White Tip sharks appeared out of nowhere! They were quite big in size, almost 2 meters; this type of shark is usually calm and peaceful, but they can get aggressive if they are teased…so we stayed well clear of them. After we had thoroughly explored the cave, we returned to the surface for a rest, and then took another dive to see the boiler wreck located nearby. This well-known wreck is almost gone,
30 DESTINATION JEDDAH
only few parts of the ship are still there, but it is still worth seeing. After the second dive, we were ready to head back to the shore, full of stories of the sights we had witnessed that day. We returned on low speed as we were ‘trolling’, which means hanging a fishing rod from the end of the boat with bait temptingly dragging from its tip. Slowly trailing bait close to the surface gives the impression that it is a real fish swimming fast, which would tempt a big fish to track it and bite it. We were lucky again and we caught a big tunafish over 5 kilos in weight! I think it was one of the best sea trips I have ever taken because there was a lot of action. Even if you’re not an experienced or licensed diver, I think everyone should try this kind of trip as you can snorkel, fish, and still have lots of fun.

BASMOCA: Bringing Art To The Masses One Click At A Time
BASMOCA is not your typical museum of towering columns, hushed galleries, and cavernous entrances. Instead it is a space that encapsulates all the beloved ideals of art and pushes all the boundaries of creativity. Welcome to BASMOCA, a pioneer in the world of virtual galleries that aims to make art available to all. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The Basma Al-Sulaiman Museum of Contemporary Art is a world within a world, specifically, one that exists within Second Life, the popular online “virtual world”. Showcasing the real-life collection of famed Saudi art-collector Basma Al-Sulaiman, BASMOCA brings together her unique international collection of works from some of the world’s most influential artists, while maintaining a strong sense of heritage in exposing the talents of lesser known Saudi and Gulf artists. Al-Sulaiman’s diverse collection is curated by her and she maintains a global view when selecting pieces. Rather than focusing on contemporary pieces from one area or country, the collection encompasses the work of artists from all over the world, including the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. An avid collector, Al-Sulaiman makes no distinction in terms of style or geography each piece represents her passion for art as a whole.
“I think the secret really is passion. When you are exposed to art, you begin wanting to understand it and gain knowledge about it. It’s a very strange feeling, that drive you get towards attaining a piece of art. It’s the passion that causes you to feel that you must live with this certain piece.” Featuring the work of notable Arab artists such as Bassim Al-Sharqi, Manal AlDowayan, Ahmed Mater and many others, each piece has a special significance to Al-Sulaiman. “For almost 20 years, I could not bring myself to sell even one piece. Many people rotate their collections, selling this and buying that and so on. Until today, I cannot sell one piece because I just can’t let it go. Each and every piece translates something special to me and has a story behind it,” she explained over Turkish coffee in her flawlessly decorated Jeddah home.
DESTINATION JEDDAH 43
By removing any geographic or time barriers, Al-Sulaiman has made her distinctive collection available and accessible to all using the wonders of modern technology. “With life’s daily commitments, it is not always possible to visit a museum. When you can’t visit a museum, than we can bring the museum to you,” she commented. Al-Sulaiman discussed her motivation for bringing this innovative concept to (virtual) life. As an art collector for over 20 years, she quickly went from collecting to wanting to share her pieces with others. “As my collection grew, I naturally aspired to the ultimate goal of any collector: to share my collection with others. A physical museum would have been the typical way to do it, but it was very difficult under the circumstances. A virtual gallery is accessible and available to all, especially [for those] in my country.” The virtual world technology of Second Life has provided Al-Sulaiman with a platform to do just that. By showcasing her real collection in such a unique and innovative manner, she has managed to transport visitors all over the world through art. Al-Sulaiman describes BASMOCA as “a platform for discussion and the exchange of ideas.” She hopes to garner local artists more international exposure while simultaneously introducing art from all over the world to the Saudi art scene. Visitors can simply download the Second Life application, create an avatar, and dive right into the collection, no plane ticket needed. What is exciting about BASMOCA is that this unique world of art is just beginning and there really is no limit to how far it can go. With Basma Al-Sulaiman at the helm, a whole new aspect of art is being introduced to the world…and it is literally waiting at your fingertips. www.basmoca.com

Homes Furniture Store Exhibition: For the first time in Jeddah, Homes Furniture hosted the First Homes Meet Art Exhibition. Nine artists have challenged their imaginations to create an art form that is captured on a piece of furniture. This idea, according to Badia Asaad, is not relatively new. It has been well known in China and other places to paste photos and pictures on furniture, which eventually transformed into real painting on furniture. The Chairman of the Board of Homes Furniture Store Qusay Assad commented “The art works presented were impressive accuracy in design, taking into account the magic of paint on pieces of furniture and their impact on the soul. Participating artists were Mohammed Haidar, Noura Gabel, Alaa Hejazi, Qosay Abdullah, Hiba Abed, Kholood Alghamdi, Nahaar Marzoog, Yaser Khattar, and Esraa Khalawi. The artists have been enthusiastic about having a similar exhibition in other cities across the Kingdom. The event was attended by major business and media icons. WEDDING
TIPS Every wedding has a story to tell‌ let your wedding reflect your unique personality and style with the following tips by Shirine Noueihad Saab, certified image consultant and wedding etiquette expert.
Every bit a lady, your fashion sensibility is tasteful, traditional, and timeless. The Dress: Choose clean, simple lines and delicate details. An A-line or sheath silhouette with portrait, bateau or jeweled neckline reflects an understated elegance. The Hairstyle: A sleek chignon nestled at the nape of the neck is classic and will draw all eyes to the necklace or neckline of your gown.
The Jewels: Delicate diamond studs and chandelier earrings add elegant sparkle to A-line and sheath silhouettes. Singlestrand pearls perfectly offset portrait and bateau necklines. Simple gold bands, bracelets and watches are slender, refined and luminous against unembellished fabrics, and echo a classic gown’s graceful lines. Accents: A sweeping tulle veil with satin edging is simple yet sophisticated. A delicate pearl comb or headpiece holds it all in place.
Beauty Bonus: Sheer pink lipstick and a French manicure. 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Beach Casual: Your style is easy, relaxed and as breezy as a summer day. Let your wedding reflect your innocent, pure natural look.
Modern & Contemporary: Slightly unconventional and always fashion-forward, you’re the gal who’s setting the trends—heavy on the class but with a soupcon of sass. You are au- courant, minimalist, trendy, streamlined, and simply chic. The Dress: Look for chic body-hugging gowns, and sharp, structured silhouettes. A sheath or short cocktail dress is just right for you. The Hairstyle: Select a chic bob or pulled-tight ponytail to accent gowns with sharp, structured silhouettes. A graphic, looping twist looks fresh and modern. The Jewels: Unadorned metals look stunning against a chic bodyhugging gown or short cocktail dress. Minimalist shapes and finishes allow subtle yet inspired dress details to shine. Must have accessory: A platinum wedding band.
The Hairstlye: Loose and wavy locks that caress sunkissed shoulders are the perfect accessory for a slinky slip dress fashioned from featherweight fabric. The Jewels: Select pieces inspired by the sea—tranquil aquamarine gemstones, coral pendants, a bracelet strung with shells. Splashes of color add a tropical-island vibe to featherweight fabrics and slinky slip dresses. Accents: A whimsical starfish hairpin that replaces a traditional headpiece and veil or an exotic bloom tucked behind the ear says ‘Island Chic’.
Beauty Bonus: Shimmery bronzer and peachy-coral lip gloss.
Must-Have Accessory: Flip-flops
Accents: A sleek satin headband that stands in for a traditional headpiece. Beauty Bonus: Defined eyes and metallic nail polish.
DESTINATION JEDDAH 51
Glamorous: With a style that’s sleek, chic and dramatic, you adore the spotlight and all the glitz it garners. You are a dramatic, leading lady who adores luxury and jet-setting style. The Dress: Look for a dress that complements your slightly sinful personality -shimmery, silvery, metallic fabrics that skim every curve. Extravagant silhouettes like fishtail hemlines and hip-hugging bodices with sequins, feathers and fur. The Hairstyle: Va-va-voom tresses à la Brigitte Bardot, play up your alluring screen siren sensibility. Or sport demure 30s-inspired Marcel waves for a chic retro look. The Jewels: High-wattage bling suits you best—the bigger the bauble, the better! Diamonds dazzle as chunky chokers, extravagant hairpins and dramatic drop earrings—while cocktail rings and flashy cuffs serve up the perfect dose of gutsy glam. Accents: An attention-grabbing flyaway veil that says, “Check me out!” A vintage brooch or Swarovski crystal hairpin holds side swept tresses in place. Must have accessory: Fur wrap Beauty Bonus: Bold Red lipstick and pearlywhite nail polish
52 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Romantic: You’ve spent your lifetime dreaming of your prince and your fairytale wedding. You are a dreamy, sentimental, poetic, feminine princess The Dress: Choose a Cinderella ball gown or a dress with layer upon layer of lace. Think ruffles, billowy tulle, Basque waist with lots of embellishments like beading, crystals and jewels. Must Have Accessory: Tiara The Hairstyle: You personify prettiness with a loose up-do with soft, wispy tendrils or sensual, sweeping curls. Feminine and poetic, these styles convey a soft, romantic image. The Jewels: Cameo-inspired earrings and heirloom locket pendants transport you to a time when lavishly ruffled gowns with trailing tulle and lace were de rigueur. Accents: A jewel-encrusted tiara worn atop soft, sensual curls. And every fairy-tale ceremony merits a majestic cathedral-style veil which transforms you into a princess. Beauty Bonus: Rosy blush and pale-pink nail polish. DESTINATION JEDDAH 53

16HUNDRED Prime Steak
Photography by Silwan Eshki
With the ongoing tsunami of restaurants flooding Jeddah in the past few years, 16 Hundred stands out as one of the very few restaurants which will impress your taste buds with an amazing, overall culinary experience. It’s a fine dining locale where each plate outranks the next and international standards are evident throughout the establishment in terms of décor, service, and the quality of the food. Mainly a protein based menu, the 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH

variety of side orders will satisfy the choosiest vegetarian as well. Last, but not least, the sumptuous desserts simply top off the entire experience. This upscale American-style steak house is sure to satisfy even the pickiest diners. 16 Hundred offers a set menu which is divided into four categories, distinguished by the type of beef and of course, the price. The menus don’t leave diners wanting as they consist of four generously sized courses (soup, salad, beef/fish/chicken and dessert). This unique approach ensures that
16 Hundred offers a full dining experience where every craving is fulfilled to the highest standard. Beginning with the mini sliders and ending with the pudding and cookies, each dish is so good that you don’t expect the experience to keep on getting better. The najil fish and braised ribs simply melt in your mouth. The Side Bone steak is indescribable – receiving high marks for texture, taste, temperature, and presentation. The grande finale left us speechless. Two of our favorite desserts were the deceptively simple cookies with cold milk and pudding with vanilla ice cream. Indescribable…you need to try it. The décor is elegant and refreshing, a perfect accompaniment to a beautiful meal. Staff are
warm and knowledgeable. Be prepared for a great culinary experience, but make sure that your wallet is equally prepared as the average price range is between SR 350 – SR550 per person! Located in the beautiful Le Chateau Mall on Tahlia St., 16 Hundred stands as a stylish competitor to other more casual steakhouses in Jeddah. The quality and service, combined with the unique location, are of the highest standard and Jeddah’s carnivores will be hard-pressed to resist its charms.

The Rebirth of
TOKI It may be hard to imagine what Toki could possibly improve on. For eleven years, this upscale Asian restaurant has constantly redefined standards of quality and warmth in Jeddah’s dining scene. But as the old platitude goes, “there’s always room for improvement.” And in that spirit, Toki continues on its journey of innovation with the help of seasoned expert: Chef Peter Lau. Chef Lau has breathed new life into the traditional Cantonese cuisine that has become a hallmark of Toki. Lau has created a new menu that delivers new takes on old favorites, as well as adding a new dimension of richness and vibrancy with the introduction of new dishes. 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Chef Lau, who has worked in some of the finest dining establishments in Southeast Asia and the Gulf, has not left anything to chance regarding his new additions to the menu. Flavor and presentation have not been overlooked in the name of innovation; rather
each dish has been carefully reworked in order to appeal to Toki’s already loyal customer base while giving Lau room to establish his identity. Recommendations from the chef include the new delectable selection of dim sum available (the potato and truffle dumpling and the chicken and black pepper pancake are standouts). Favorites such as the wasabi prawns are still available (which will come to a relief to many diehard Toki fans), but have been subtly altered in a new and interesting way. Chef Lau also recommended the braised shiitake mushrooms, the scallops with garlic, the crispy chicken and the delicately beautiful soba noodles which are presented in an egg parcel. Desserts are consistently excellent, just as they always have been at Toki, and the new presentations and combinations of unexpected flavors will have diners ensuring that they leave room for something sweet. The lychee show, the pistachio torte, and even a simple assortment of fresh fruit, are all begging to be indulged in and shared, in the convivial manner that a Toki dining experience has become so known for. Lau brings together all of the diverse aspects of Chinese cuisine (Szechuan, Cantonese, etc.) in a combination of explosive tastes and subtle flavors that truly encapsulates Toki’s rebirth and revitalization. Without compromising what Jeddah residents already love about the restaurant, Toki seems intent on staying relevant and exciting....and so far, so good. Goodies’ Ka’ak Bel Konafa At this point, everyone has probably eaten at least once at Goodies, the delicious Lebanese eatery. With a dizzying array of choices, the restaurant really shines as a place where one can go to get a quick delicious meal that loses none of its authenticity or warmth in the process. Well, now there’s yet another reason to go to Goodies...their Ka’ak Bel Konafa. This deliciously sweet treat consists of ka’ak (a popular sesame-covered bread) filled with delicious semolina, cream, and cheese. This not to be missed dessert will make any day brighter and any sweet tooth even sweeter! Take it from us; you won’t regret it! Location: Stars Avenue Mall on Malek Rd. &

Mystery Diner
Olio Olio’s spectacular location in front of the Bellagio-style fountains at the centre of uberchic Stars Mall raises gastronomic expectations of great things to come. The décor, which is beginning to show signs of its age however, only reinforces the high expectations and creates an inviting backdrop for elegant dining.
The menu is comprehensive, but predictable, and would benefit from a more creative variety of fresh pasta specials which take full advantage of local seafood and seasonal produce. The salad bar is a welcome starter, even though the smoked salmon is absent. The pasta Alfredo and Aglio Olio were very acceptable, although lacking in pungency. Do try the Paella which is the best value meal on the menu, replete with exotic seafoods, (don’t be put off by its Mediterranean rather than Italian origins.) The Quattro Formaggi and Napolitana pizzas were well made and satisfying. The Scaloppine Di Vitello and Pollo Griglia are also recommended. Desserts were perfectly adequate, but they looked a little tired and lacked real imagination of the type that would
actually excite the palate, rather than merely placate a hungry diner. The heavy wooden covered menus have outlived their curiosity value and will be replaced when the new and hopefully improved menu is introduced over the next couple of months. Whilst pricing is on the higher side, it is in keeping with the padded budgets of the well heeled clientele who favor the high-end stores in this premiere neighborhood. The staff, whilst attentive, need better coaching in accurately describing menu items to provoke interest and to improve the chances of a greater variety of customers being exposed to more different tastes then the common garden variety of fare such as pizza and spaghetti Bolognese. Whilst the overall dining experience was quite satisfactory, with a just a little extra attention to service standards, greater care over the authenticity of recipes and ingredients, and a much needed injection of creative flair, this popular Italian venue could easily ascend to a much higher standard of dining excellence that could reposition itself into the preeminent Italian eatery in town…maybe even allow it to become Jeddah’s own answer to Las Vegas’ Bellagio! Love Is In The Air
Heavenly Honeymoons By Dilara Hafiz
You’ve found the perfect partner, purchased the perfect wedding dress, and planned the perfect wedding…now you can relax, right? Wrong…you still have to plan the ideal romantic honeymoon. After all, the honeymoon can set the stage for the rest of your married life. Will you have loving stories and fantastic photographs to share with your friends and family or will your memories fade into oblivion along with a mediocre destination and budget accommodation?
Tropical Island Paradise
Honeymoons should be relaxing, romantic, but most of all, spent in an atmosphere which is conducive to encouraging intimacy and trust. Imagine days spent exploring the sights as well as exploring each other’s thoughts. Imagine evenings spent lingering over exquisite gourmet food, enjoying moonlight strolls, and seductive, pleasurefilled nights. The location is ALL IMPORTANT. Here are some honeymoon ideas to begin a lifetime of partnership filled with peace and pleasure.
Sandy beaches, open air reception, and attentive staff provide discreet, world-class service.
Nothing beats the sounds of waves lapping outside your window and the fragrance of exotic flowers perfuming the air to put you in the mood for romance. You can’t go wrong with a beach destination – seafood, water sports, and balmy breezes all equal terrific island pleasure. · Dusit Thani Laguna – Phuket, Thailand

European City Escape Europe abounds with capital cities full of art, culture, and luxury. Enjoy fine dining, high-end shopping, and wordly sight-seeing to satisfy connoisseurs of the finer things in life. · Hotel Rialto – Venice, Italy Views of the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge will put you in the mood for love. Book the suite with exquisite four-poster bed for a memorable experience! http://www.rialtohotel.com/services.htm http://www.excellent-romantic-vacations .com/romantic-venice-hotels.html Romantic Tip: Take a boat trip to Murano and select some handmade Venetian glass masterpieces to furnish your new home together. · Splendid Etoile Hotel – Paris, France Lous IV style suites with marble bathrooms, sound-proofing, and excellent room service. http://www.booking.com/hotel/ http://www.excellent-romantic-vacations.com/ paris-honeymoon.html Romantic Tip: Wander the narrow streets of Montmartre and enjoy a romantic meal in a tucked away bistro, then gaze out at the lights of Paris while sitting on the steps of Sacre Coeur.
All-Inclusive Cruise If the stresses of the wedding have left you exhausted, consider the package cruise for a worry-free honeymoon. You’ll enjoy fine dining, entertainment, and an itinerary of exciting stops to liven up the relaxing days at sea, without having to worry about transport or finding a good restaurant on a daily basis. Spas, casinos, tours, shopping – it’s all provided for you. Select from the Mediterranean, the trans- Atlantic, or Asian itineraries. http://www.cruisedirect.com/ Romantic Tip: Book onboard tours and surprise each other with rendezvous in different intimate spots around the cruise ship each day. You’ll begin your life’s journey with a clear conscience, knowing that you are playing your part in making our world a little bit better.
1. Conserve water by:
- Installing low-flow showerheads & toilets - Running your dishwasher/ clothes washer with a full load - Installing a water filter on your kitchen faucet to eliminate the need for bottled water
2. Maintain a healthy indoor environment by:
- Painting your walls using lead-free paint (available at SACO) - Installing alternative wood flooring like Pergo or parquet - Purchasing bamboo bedding, towels etc. - Replacing plastic containers with either glass or stainless steel (plastic is toxic to produce & dispose of) - Using eco-friendly cleaning products
3. Conserve energy by:
- Using energy-efficient light bulbs throughout your house - Installing dimmer switches (can reduce electricity bills by 40%) - Using ceiling fans to circulate air and reduce indoor temperatures - Using programmable thermostats to reduce energy consumption during peak times - Insulating your home to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter Plan wisely now and save money, water, and energy in the long run…. Best wishes and congratulations on your new home! 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH
What Goes Around Comes Around
By Serene Feteih
DJ recently did an article summarizing efforts by local schools regarding environmental awareness. An impressive number are committed to educating students about the 3 R’s and implementing a system to reduce waste.
Ambassador’s School recently collaborated with the Trewind Program. Over 50 schools, both public and private, are currently listed with Trewind. This program includes installing 3 colored recycle bins in the school, gathering the materials periodically, and recycling it into furniture that can be made into school chairs, benches, tables …etc. These efforts put a positive spin on the saying “What goes around comes around.” Children are educated in this program through a series of a slide shows (done by Al-Nabta Group) about the process of recycling, the power of the decision to recycle and the consequences of both choices. Children are asked to choose which planet they would prefer to live on - a dirty and polluted one or a clean and happy one? They are then educated and informed on how items are sorted into categories such as glass, paper carton, and plastic. This waste is then repfabricated into new, usable items such as benches, chairs, and desks! The final stage shows children images of what can happen to the planet if they don’t take care of their environment, whether on land or sea. This is a great step to encourage children to take charge of their lives and how to be responsible for their actions and the consequences that follow. This book is one of the most amazing books written about psychological skills, understanding and dealing with everyday problems. What makes this book distinctive is the practical and applicable techniques it provides instead of the merely theoretical handling. This book helps the reader to better understand some feelings of the daily life such as fear, anger, depression, shyness and guilt in a simplified way. To overcome these feelings, the writers encourage the reader to start by looking for the false perceptions and thoughts that lead to unwanted feelings, then writing those perceptions and thoughts and analyzing them and finally replace them with other positive thoughts. This technique is called cognitive behavioral therapy that is based on changing thoughts and perceptions. The book discusses a number of practical applications of this theory such as tables, drawings and real stories of individuals who could successfully overcome their problems applying this theory and became more positive and socially proactive. It takes only15 minutes of your time, for approximately a month to change the way you think and feel for good! So go ahead pick up the book and start reading, it is worth it.

Useful Arabic Words & Pronunciations
Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary by country and region. Arabic words are constructed from threeletter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. Addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.
