EDITORIAL The Digital Age
Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani
The 21st century will be known as the time when the distinction blurred between the real world and the digital world. Technology today has pervaded our homes with the prevalence of home computers, workplaces with emails and e-conferencing, and even 35,000 feet in the air with airphones and streaming the Internet while we travel! The pleasures and the perils of all this technology is the topic of this issue of DJ. From shopping online or ordering fine-dining online to keeping abreast of all the latest local and international news to socializing…it’s all available just a click away.
Editorial Director
Before you get carried away on this tide of technology, it’s important to be smart about the extent of living an online existence, especially where your children are concerned. Read what Jeddah’s leading educational psychologist, Dr. Lina Hashem, has to say about the importance of online monitoring. Along with the benefits and convenience of these e-tools, uniquely 21st century issues such as cyber-bullying and Internet addictions are very real dangers which parents should be aware of. Entertainment and socializing is increasingly taking place online – check out the best of the Middle East’s Twitter, websites, and blogs compiled by DJ staff.
Fashion Editor
Hajj Mubarak and Eid Al-Adha greetings to all our readers during this special season. May all your prayers be fulfilled, Ameen.

You Said It
Drawing a Journey By Alanoud Abduljawad
SAID BY A TEENAGER Talent is a natural gift. Every person in the world is talented and special in his or her own way. From drawing, to writing to dancing... hold on, let’s stop and focus on the word ‘drawing.’ Why, you wonder? Well, that is an easy answer. Meet two lovely young girls I had the pleasure of meeting, supported by a well-known charity foundation. Drawing and painting is their passion. During their free time, you will find them drawing in a lovely little sketchbook. They both have the desire and urge to draw. From animation to nature, you name it. What mostly amazes me is that they are no older than 13. Both of them are so young, and yet with so much enthusiasm. They still have a long journey ahead of them. A long way to grow artistically, improve and actually become famous. When I take a glance into the future, I see them hosting exhibitions, becoming names in magazines, and maybe even with pictures on Google. They both need a boost of support and motivation that will encourage them to reach their goals and dreams. So let’s do that as a start. It’s our turn to draw a smile on their canvas, a drawing that means the world to them. Let’s help them believe in themselves and shine like never before by supporting them. We will be holding a humble event to unfold the start of their amazing journey at Roshana Mall on November 28th from 5PM -8PM.Witness their beginning for your self!

THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R
Online Grocery Shopping
In South Korea, grocery shopping has jumped to a whole new level of convenience by introducing the virtual store. A simple picture display of market products in the subway which allows you to scan the bar codes with your smart phone, purchase the items online and get it delivered the same day after working hours. Therefore saving you a much-needed amount of time from your busy day. Whether it’s the kids, work, the house or the lack of a driving license, it is a real hassle for working mothers of our generation to find time for grocery shopping. The solution is simple, Jeddah’s
big brand supermarkets like Danube and Panda should step into the 21st century and launch an online shopping service which will not only help those employed wives and mothers, but all kinds of busy families, something that the rest of the world has been experiencing for years. The Saudi market is more than ready to comprehend such a service. By creating this new distribution channel, it will open new profitable opportunities for companies, as they will gain a whole different platform for marketing and advertisement and will therefore reach the social media community by possibly providing the service of sharing the consumer’s favorite products through the different social media channels.
Thumbs up to...
Active Saudi Youth On YouTube
According to statistics, Saudi Arabia has now ranked #1 as biggest user of YouTube worldwide -contributing more than 90 million YouTube views a day. For Saudis, YouTube is not only considered to be a source of entertainment, but an exceptional tool to voice your opinions. Saudi youth have used this influential device to reach out not only to their generation, but also to all age groups and it has proven to be effective in encouraging this generation to speak up.
Thumbs down to...
Saudi National Day Suicidal Celebrations A country’s national day should be a celebration for its citizens, not a day to hide in their homes in fear of hooligans on the streets! Unfortunately, here in Jeddah on September 23rd you would be safer behind closed doors. There is absolutely no need for people to die and get hospitalized in order to show their love for their country. Reckless driving and lack of consideration on that night caused deaths and injuries to people who were simply trying to safely reach their homes, but couldn’t because they were unwillingly stuck in crazy traffic supposedly called a “celebration!” We all love our country, and would love to celebrate our national day, but it would be very much appreciated if we could do so without risking our lives in the process.

Some of us move around from country to country in the name of adventure, yet some move because life has much more to offer somewhere else. Whatever the reason may be, most of us can agree on one thing and that is making your new destination your new home isn’t that easy… Nowadays getting online access is almost as important as electricity and water, and Saudi Arabia is a region leader when it comes to online services. The Saudi services are convenient, faster and cheaper than most other countries around the world. Whenever you move to a new place, you never know how long will you be there, so try to go out and enjoy the country before you have to pick up and leave. Discover new places and go visit them instead of putting them on your “To Do List”.
How to settle in online: 1. Get connected:
How to get connected and what are the best different services provided:
Our 3 main communication companies are:
STC, Mobily, and Zain, which offer various plans for Internet connection services, great deals and packages. Here are some of their offers:
1. STC:

Nowadays we have fiber optics (cables that transmit data) almost everywhere, so check with the local cable companies to help you get connected.
2. Navigate the city:
Finding your way on the ground is pretty much similar to finding it online, each country or city has its local websites that are very useful, but it takes a bit of research and digging to find the ones that suit your needs. Our first advice is to expand your Facebook network by adding Jeddah to it; as Facebook is the number one resource to get connected to the community, its activities and what’s happening. Try to find out about local activity groups like yoga classes, cooking classes, the sports clubs and other sort of entertainment. Joining other people with the same interests could not only help fill your schedule, but will help you make new friends and meet new people.
3. Staying in touch with your home country:
Fortunately, with the Internet you can manage to keep in touch with family and friends. The social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Skype can help you feel closer to home more than you could imagine. Keeping in contact with the people you love is key to coping with your new environment.
TIP1: Keep in mind the time difference;
4. Blogs and Websites near you:
Check out blogs and local websites where you will find people whom you can relate to. They will definitely have advice to help you successfully settle in: For information about the city, its events and activities. www.jeddah-blog.com InterNations is the first international online community for people who live and work abroad. www.internations.org Helps with a lot of spots and places you need to settle in. www.expatriates.com For expatriate adventures and exchange information. www.expatexchange.com

Jeddah’s Who’s Who Abdulrahman Tarabzouni:
The Man Behind Google Arabia By Bassma Al Toaimi
Abdulrahman Tarabzouni is a successful, ambitious, inspirational man who has achieved so much at a young age. His passion for development and technology propelled him to be recognized as one of the most influential Arab leaders under 30. He was also one of the top five Arab innovators recognized by MIT, and in addition to being the co-founder of several technology ventures, he is also currently the head of Google Emerging Arabia. Were your entrepreneurial characteristics visible since you were a child?
Yes, you could say that. The earliest recollection I have of an attempt at being an entrepreneur was in school during fourth grade. My friends and I used to think of ways to compete with the school’s cafeteria by selling products on our own on the side. We would go around shops and look for cool candy or chocolates that were not available at school, then buy them, price them somewhat randomly and sell them. Of course we did so discretely in order to avoid getting in trouble with the school administration. Thinking about it now, we were effectively –and naively—doing things like marketing, demand and supply analysis, supply chain management, all without us knowing it. That was fun and in many ways eye opening.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH
I’ve always loved playing with computers and gadgets. When I was around twelve years old, I read the book The Road Ahead by Bill Gates, and that was the turning point in my life. After reading it, I felt like the stars were aligned and I knew what I wanted to do. The book sparked my interest and I started reading more and more about programming. I wanted to learn everything I could about it.
What inspired you to start your online ventures?
Since I was young, I was always excited about building things that people can use. However, I knew I was not ready in terms of real skills, until I went to MIT. Between the time I read Bill Gates’ book and went to MIT, I kept exploring and reading things. I sought to increase my breadth of knowledge –not depth yet— mainly because I wanted to narrow down my specific areas of passion and figure out where to focus. Then, MIT gave me the understanding and depth I needed to move
forward and build things. After I accumulated some understanding of the industry and the tools required to build things at scale, I got down to work. In 2005, shortly after the introduction of Facebook, I attempted to create my first online venture with a co-founder, which was supposed to be a 3D virtual social platform. It did not go well, but the more failures I scored, the more comfortable I felt about taking risks and iterating things faster to get closer to building something successful. Failure is good. I kept going, until I finally co-created Syphir, which was a hit, and Popover Games, which got acquired.
What is your ultimate goal?
Two factors determine my goals and where I spend my time and energy: impact and scale. I usually focus on tackling problems that would have large impact if solved, and can scale to be used by hundreds of millions of people in the hope of changing their lives to the better. I do this with the startups I build or invest in. I also do this at my role in Google —this was actually one of the main reasons I took on the role. To me, Google is more than a company; it is a powerful and scalable platform that is solving global problems and I wanted to leverage our scale and knowledge to kick-start and enable the Internet ecosystem here in the region.
What is the single achievement you are most proud of out of your vast accomplishments?
I am not proud of any particular accomplishment yet. But I must say that I am where I am today because of many people, particularly three special ladies in my life: my mother, my wife, and my daughter. They are my motivation. They drive me to push myself and do the type of things I do every day.
What difficulties or challenges did you face? And how did you manage?
The main challenges I constantly face are inner conflicts with myself. I keep going back and forth in my mind about whether to dedicate my time and resources into short-term vs long-term, local vs global types of work or goals. Usually, short-term or local goals give an immediate sense of progress, are easy to mobilize teams around
and manage. Long-term or global types of goals are harder and require considerable patience. I always ask myself where I want to place myself and how I should prioritize what I want to work on.
What do you think is the cause for the lack of Saudi SME’s presence online, despite the fact that Saudi has an extremely high user base?
I think there are two main reasons for this. The first and major problem is lack of robust payment gateways. Both SMEs and consumers need scalable and cost-effective platforms that can help them transact online. This is not available yet. Another issue is that not enough SME owners are aware of the importance of the role the Internet plays when it comes to businesses. The first things people do when hearing of a new company or product is to search for it online. No online presence will most likely lead to significant opportunity loss. The Internet has so much power and influence that SME owners can leverage if given the right education and tools.
How do you think we can encourage our Saudi youth to become entrepreneurs? Again, first, let us make sure they get the right education and tools. Second, let’s solve the funding gap. Seed level VC capital for high risk ventures is not available. Third, we need create dense networks of support, matching, mentorship, etc where people can get to know each other, bounce ideas, find partners or even potential exits. In my opinion, that last one is the most important. You cannot have a thriving entrepreneurial culture without making sure these dense networks of support are in place.
Word of advice for young entrepreneurs? If you see an opportunity, take it! Believe in yourself. Most importantly, think big, embrace risks, and go e-x-e-c-u-t-e! A Steve Jobs quote I want to leave you with which I find truly inspiring is “Life can be much broader
once you discover one simple fact, and that is, everything around you that you call life was made up by people who were no smarter than you.”

One of the biggest issues we face in Jeddah is giving out directions. Trying to get something delivered to your home can be time consuming, frustrating, and stressful because of the many times the driver will call you to make sure he took a left after the correct petrol station! DJ readers will be pleased to know that someone finally did something about this issue. And that someone is not just anyone; he is a Saudi man who spent his life in Germany, studying and developing himself. After he gained the education and skills he wanted from living abroad, he decided to finally move back to his homeland, and try to make a difference. And indeed, he is about to make a huge positive impact on all our lives!
WE RESPECT YOUR PRIVACY AS MUCH AS OUR OWN, AND WE INTEND TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE A HOME.
Dr. Abdulla Elyas
Dr. Abdulla Elyas moved to Saudi three years ago after spending his whole life in Germany. Three years was more than enough time for him to realize that something had to be done about this whole directions conundrum in the country. He decided to fix this issue and make all our lives easier. Together with co-founding friends, Elyas thought of a brilliant idea they called Enwani, which eliminates giving out directions and directly links your address to your mobile number. The registration process on the website and the App is free, simple, and straightforward. All you have to do is sign up with your mobile number, locate your home on the map, and you can even have more than one address (i.e. home, office, etc.) linked to the same mobile number.

The words “privacy” and “safety” are probably what you’re thinking of right about now. Well, you have nothing to worry about. Your number and address are completely secure and private and policies have been implemented in order to ensure the privacy of your details. No one can see your address without your authorization. Privacy is Enwani’s highest priority, and they guarantee the safety of your details on their website.
What happens after you sign up? The process is simple. When you shop online and reach the purchasing section, you will have the option of using your Enwani address, and well, it’s just that simple! Of course the online shop will only see your address after you authorize it. Although Enwani does not take care of the delivery process itself, they provide drivers with topnotch navigation systems, and have agreements with leading courier services. This process was tested step by step with Ohayo, one of Enwani’s partners, and was a major success. Now you’re probably thinking, “wow this sounds unreal!” But wait, it gets better. One of the many benefits of Enwani is that it can even be used for personal or social reasons. Instead of handing out maps to your friends when you plan a gathering, just let them find you on Enwani! Shopping By Halah Gandeel
In the past few years, the online generation has witnessed a massive sea of innovative ideas that has changed the way we do anything, forever. The simple task of shopping has now been made much simpler by making it possible for you to shop in the middle of the night, on your couch, in your pajamas, from any country you desire and that’s the ultimate dream.
Saudi Arabia is finally recognizing the various benefits of online shopping, some of them are: Convenience
Variety
Better deals
Coupons
Not having to deal with crowded lines at the register, the slow credit card machines or when it comes to Saudi women, the missing driver. It is also tremendously convenient for those of us with busy schedules who just don’t have the time to go skipping from store to store.
The absolute advantage of being able to choose from a wide range of different brands and sellers at one stop only. As well as landing the items that are sold-out or unavailable in store.
It is no surprise that you are able to find the same items that are in store for a much better price online, especially if you have a discount coupon. The reason for that is that your items get delivered to you directly from the manufacturer through the Internet, instead of going through a middle-man, which results in higher prices.
It’s amazing how much you can save with online discount coupons; you can get a good deal on almost anything from restaurant meals, hotel bookings to amusement park tickets.
Gifting It seems that we never have the time to go look for the perfect gift for a special someone; online shopping now makes that almost effortless. It is now feasible to send your gift across the world on the exact date you want. Wrapped, signed and delivered. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Kid’s Online Safety With Dr. Lina hashem
Since she was a child, Dr. Lina Hashem has always had a passion for the human mind and the way it works. She is currently a Counseling Psychologist at Badria Towers here in Jeddah. Dr. Lina works with children, teenagers and women, and covers conditions such as depression and anxiety, among many others. As a psychologist, her insight and advice regarding Internet usage by children is essential information for every parent. any field. But as they say, “with great power comes great responsibility,” and the Internet has created new challenges for our society and the most threatening among these is the impact it has on our children. So although there are many advantages to the Internet such as the development of the child’s physical, cognitive, and social skills, I feel the disadvantages are more vital to focus on.
Do you think the internet is hurting our children? if yes, how so?
What kind of effect does the internet have on children?
The Internet has proved to be one of the most innovative inventions for us. It has made its presence felt in every sphere of our lives, be it economy, society, health care, spirituality, etc. Prominent among its benefits is the impact it has had on the education sector. Children can now gain free and immediate access to all types of research and information, getting the latest updates in 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH
If not monitored correctly for usage and content, then yes, I absolutely think the Internet will hurt our children. Children spend most of their time on the Internet, showing a peculiar kind of behavior, which is marked with the urge to be on the Internet all the time. In some cases, they may shun all activities and become immersed in the virtual world. Another reason is reduced physical activity. Children can easily fall prey to a lot of lifestyle- related diseases such as obesity etc.
What kind of signs should parents watch out for when it comes to their children and the Internet?
Existing literature shows that children’s exposure to inappropriate media content yields many negative outcomes such as increased aggression, fear, desensitization, poor school performance, symptoms of psychological trauma, antisocial behavior, low self-esteem, lack of reality, identity confusion, and more.
How can a parent deal with these signs?
It is critical that both parents present a united front and address the problem with each other before addressing the issue with their child. Show your child that you care. It helps to begin by reminding your child that you love him/her and that you care about his/her happiness and well-being. Children often interpret questions about their behavior as blame and criticism. You need to reassure your child that you are not condemning them. Rather, tell your child you are concerned about some of the changes you have noticed in his/ her behavior and refer to these changes in specific forms (e.g. fatigue, declining grades, giving up hobbies, social withdrawal, etc.) Listen to your children, allow them to vent, and then together come up with a plan to make some changes. If you are not able to speak with your child, then I recommend you seek professional help from a Psychologist.
How can parents protect their children from inappropriate sites? And what should they do if their children become exposed to such sites?
This day and age it is important that parents become computer literate and Internet savvy to keep up with this generation. Check out parental controls available on your online service provider and on the computers themselves. Install filtering/blocking software, or use a ‘clean Internet provider’ that filters at the server level.
How can parents monitor their children’s exposure to the Internet? Encourage other interests and social activities. Get your child out from behind the computer screen. Expose them to other activities such as team sports, arts and crafts, music, and afterschool clubs. Monitor computer use and set clear limits. Restrict the use of computers to a common area of the house where you can keep an eye on your child’s online activity and limit time spent online. Talk to your child about underlying issues. Compulsive computer use can be the sign of deeper problems. Is your child having problems fitting in? Has there been a major change, like a move or a divorce, which is causing stress? Get help. Teenagers often rebel against their parents, but if they hear the same information from a different authority figure, they may be more inclined to listen. Don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling if you are concerned about your child.
How do parents respect their children’s privacy yet monitor their activities online? Like I said before, restrict use of the computer to a common area. Also, it is important to explain to your children the dangers associated with using the Internet and to give them the trust to come to you if they face any problems.

A Guide to
prOFeSSiOnaL Blogging By Samaher Tariq
Originally called a ‘web log’ - a blog is in simpler terms, an online diary. It’s a website in which you can share your thoughts and opinions with your readers. A blog may be created for two reasons: it can either be personal, in which people share their everyday activities, interests and experiences, like they would in their diary. Or it may be a professional blog, in which people can gain profit. Professional blogging has been a worldwide trend for quite some time now. It takes a lot of time, passion and dedication to pursue a freelancing career out of a blog. However, with the right steps and guidance, your blog could be the next big thing!
1. HOW IT BEGINS:
2. SPEAK UP!
The first step is to set blog objectives and draw up a business plan. This will allow you to envision where you’re headed. After that you need to create a design and logo for your blog, and a business page in social networks such as Facebook. It is extremely important to include all of your social network links and emails in your blog because by doing so, you’ll make it easier for readers to reach you. Create simple but informative tabs in your blog in order to provide your readers with general information about yourself. Provide details such as hobbies, what makes you different, your analytic numbers, and your alexa ranking.
When you’re blogging, make sure you have your own voice. It is important to be original and unique. When you re-post material that has already been posted all over the Internet, discuss and comment on it using your own words. By doing so, you will be more likely to engage with your audience and initiate discussions on a regular basis. Another important piece of advice is to blog frequently and make sure your blog entries are up to date and relevant. In order for you to be heard, you must engage in all social networks that fit your blog niche (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Polyvore, and Instagram), and approach brands and companies that represent your style; don’t count on agencies to get you connected. Get yourself connected! Last but not least, go out and engage with people and attend events. Be heard and be seen.

YouTube’s popularity level within Jeddah has been growing tremendously in the past few years. This is mainly due to the rise in the number of locals’ becoming more active online. In regards to entertainment channels such as 3al6ayer and Masameer, this growth is due to the noticeable increase in local Saudi youth showing off their talent and sending different messages to the world through YouTube channels. According to Rajae Qawas, Jordanian presenter of N2oComedy (YouTube channel which has received over 17 million views), “I aim to present the views of our team as best as I can and allow the viewer to draw informed conclusions of the content we deliver.” In addition to entertainment channels, news channels such as Al Arabiya are also experiencing a growth in subscribers and viewers. At this point we think it is safe to say that YouTube is one of the top sources for pretty much all genres.

7CAMICIE The Italian Shirt
Fashion trends began decades ago, and usually portrayed the cultural and political situations of the time. For quite some time now, designers, music artists, and public figures have been playing the biggest role in setting trends all over the world. In the 1980’s, for example, Madonna was the main reason fishnet stockings and brightly colored necklaces became popular. Throughout the history of fashion, a pattern in trends can be seen. What was popular a decade or two ago is coming back into fashion now. An item of clothing that has not seen as many changes throughout the history and evolution of fashion is the classic shirt. Whether you think back ten, twenty, or thirty years, everybody had a classic button-up collar shirt in his or her closet. Shirts have been wore mostly by men since the 1300’s, and due to the elegant look they add to a person’s character, shirts became popular as a luxury item. Throughout the years, artists such as Caravaggio used shirts in paintings, and with time the shirt became a necessity, and not just a luxury item. 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Introducing a new and redefined shirt in the Saudi market today is 7camicie, which is an Italian franchising network currently having over 352 franchisee stores worldwide, mainly clustered in Europe; only ten in the Middle East, two of which are in Jeddah. 7camicie, (meaning 7 shirts in Italian), entered Jeddah’s shopping scene in July 2012, and is available at Red Sea Mall and Stars Avenue. The Saudi Franchisee has adopted two of the available franchising formats: the Kiosk and the full-fledged shop. 7camicie brings diversity to the world of shirts by offering a new and unique
concept, which is their signature three-collar shirt. 7camicie takes pride in the high quality of their products, unique colorful collections, and a variety of patterns such as stripes, polka dots, and geometrical figures. With a beautiful and attractive variety of shirts for women, men, and children, 7camicie sets itself aside and categorizes itself as unique because of its high quality tailoring and creativity. In addition to their shirt collections, 7camicie also offers a wide selection of fashionable silk ties. Class, elegance, and comfort are three things all 7camicie shirts represent. Whether you look out for the store or not, it will catch your attention with both its sleek and sophisticated black exterior, and its colorful and welcoming interior. Shirts are stacked beautifully and neatly throughout the store on all walls, which result in a very eye-catching and distinctive look. One of the many reasons 7camicie is unique is the fact that every one of their 352 stores worldwide looks similar. When a store opens in a certain country, a team from Italy heads to the store and ensures that the style of display of their collections is similar to all other branches. This fact adds to their uniqueness, and allows them to stand out even more. Their collection is easily accessible either at the store, online store, or on all social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube), and the option of delivery is available within the kingdom. The owner Mezahem Basrawi was introduced to 7camicie while he was in Europe. He was completely impressed with the brand, their image, their creativity, and the beauty and distinction of their collections. Then and there, he fell in love with the store and was determined to contact the main office of the company and within the following month he got the franchise. Basrawi wanted to introduce this brand in his country, in the hopes of amazing Jeddawi’s with it just like the brand amazed him. Yosi Samra has just opened its first Mono Brand store in the Middle East and we have Ms Hazma Alireza from Alireza Holding Co to thank for that! Lucky for us, the store is located right here in Jeddah at Red Sea Mall right next to I.ZONE. Everyday, more and more women like Ms. Hazma are working their way up in the business world. Whether it is due to cultures, traditions, or religion, women’s outfits here are mostly hidden underneath the Abaya. For that reason, more focus and attention is on their shoes and bags. There was a time when people would think shoes were simply just shoes; however, nowadays shoes can portray a woman’s style and personality. Yosi Samra is an American designer from New York with Italian roots. He spent his childhood working with his father, a highly talented shoemaker. Yosi grew up to appreciate the art of shoemaking, and decided to start his own collection. He started with ballet flats and expanded to include flip-flops, loafers, handbags, and also children’s shoes. Yosi first introduced his line of versatile fold-up ballet flats in 2009, and immediately received positive feedback from the public, and was featured in magazines such as 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

O Magazine, People Stylewatch, and Lucky. In addition to the fact that they are extremely comfortable, Yosi ballet flats fold up to literally fit anywhere; the words ‘handy’ and ‘comfort on the go’ come into mind when you think about Yosi Samra’s collections. His beautiful and convenient fold-up flats come in very handy if you want to relax from standing on your feet in killer heels all day or night! Even more good news is that they come in a wide variety of leathers, patents, satins, suedes, and prints, and all of these come in all kinds of colors and shades you can imagine, from neon to neutrals. Sophistication, fun, class, elegance, color, style, and comfort are all factors that are combined in every pair of shoes sold by Yosi. His shoes represent high-fashion chic in the latest trends of every season, and are simply a must-have! After purchasing one pair after another online, Ms. Hazma’s interest in Yosi Samra kept increasing. And when she met with the designer himself at a prêt-a-porter show in Paris, she decided it was time for this fantastic brand to get a little closer to home so everyone can enjoy the beauty and comfort of his shoes. The beautiful ballet flats and chic flip-flops come in an array of colors, textures and prints which will make you spend hours in the store just trying to decide which ones to choose. Celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Kourtney Kardashian, Cindy Crawford and Nicole Sherzinger have been spotted wearing them out and about all over the world. Having been given the chance to be the first proud owner of a pair of Samara Muted Metallic ballet flats in Gold, I can honestly tell you that it is the very beginning of my new found obsession, and it has definitely been a wonderful addition to my wardrobe! Fareej Bin 3agool Kuwaiti Cuisine
A tasty addition to our diverse dining scene in Jeddah is the Kuwaiti restaurant, Fareej Bin A’gool, opening this month in Rawdah Star Mall! At Fareej Bin A’gool, you can expect to satisfy your taste buds thoroughly with food that will remind you very much of meals at your grandparent’s house when you were a child. In order to please all ages and tastes, their diverse menu also includes special burgers and onion rings in addition to all kinds of traditional Kuwaiti and Arabic dishes reminiscent of an Arab childhood. Walking into the restaurant will make you feel like you stepped back in time. You will relive and experience how Kuwait’s original dining atmosphere was centuries ago. As soon as you step inside, you will breathe in the scent of Arabic Oud and Bukhoor and aromatic herbs and spices such as cinnamon, lemon powder, and saffron. You will be greeted by waiters dressed in traditional Kuwaiti outfits and will be offered Arabic coffee which you can indulge in while waiting for your meal. If you take a moment to look around at your surroundings, you 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH

will see natural auburn wood walls of the restaurant and dimly lit lanterns, which give the restaurant a warm and cozy ambience. You will be offered a wide variety of traditional Kuwaiti dishes, which range from Biryani and Kabsa, among many others. Although many chefs perfect the traditional and popular Biryani, Fareej Bin A’gool prides itself by stating that their chef has a passion for cooking traditional Arabic recipes with a twist of his own; whether this twist is adding secret ingredients or just
cooking it differently, you are guaranteed to have a meal you will remember. Your mouthwatering dishes will be served literally like they were served back in the day, in copper dishes, on top of traditionally designed placemats. In order to ensure the perfection and uniqueness of all the dishes offered on their menu, Fareej Bin A’gool gives great attention to importing nothing but the finest Indian herbs and spices to complement their food. Furthermore, in order to stick to the originality of their recipes, customary Kuwaiti ingredients such as the national fish of Kuwait, the Zubaidi, will be imported specifically from Kuwait. A visit to Fareej Bin A’gool will definitely be an unforgettable experience. It will make you feel like you were looking into the past through a peephole, and rather than just taking a look, after just one visit, you will want to open the door and give in to their welcoming environment. THE RESTAURANT IS RECOGNIZED BY CIAO ITALIA, AND WON A MEDAL FROM THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE MINISTRY IN ITALY.
Italy is known for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, friendly people, and most of all, its heavenly food. All the factors that make up the beauty of Italy are portrayed within Il Villaggio, right here in Jeddah. Il Villaggio, which means The Village in Italian, is a restaurant that will make you feel like you are literally in a village within the beautiful cities of Italy. It comprises of six different restaurants, and three spacious outdoor seating areas, each with its own style and theme, and all with the common factor: real and authentic Italian. As you walk into Il Villaggio, by the entrance you can close your eyes and inhale the delicious scent of a mixture of freshly baked pastries and homemade Italian delicacies. Keep walking further into the room and feast your eyes upon a range of cakes and sweets for sale, in addition to authentic Italian products such as pure olive oil and pastas imported specifically from Italy. Of course, at the end of that line of tasty treats is a fresh gelato stand, offering a range of avors that will make you truly understand and appreciate the definition of real Italian gelato!

The outdoor seating areas (The Veranda) are spacious, and are all designed with real Teak Wood; the first one is on the ground oor in between two of the six restaurants. It consists of a comfortable seating area surrounding a trampoline and a playground. If you take the
stairs to the second floor, on one hand you will see another outdoor seating area in between two different indoor restaurants. On the other hand you will see the third outdoor seating area and yet another room. Whether you choose to sit in or out, the views are beautiful and will give you a sense of serenity. Indoors you have a mini version of Italian décor and atmosphere, and outdoors you have the beautiful wide view of the whole Andalus street. Il Villaggio should be known for many reasons in addition to its cuisine, which is handled by the award winning executive chef Vincenzo Raschella. Chef Vincenzo is a true Italian down to his roots. His love and passion for food is evident and can be felt through his mouthwatering steaming original dishes. He is a chef with no limits to creating the perfect dishes with thirst quenching complements. Another fact that adds on to Il Villaggio’s uniqueness is their extremely impressive hygiene standards and environmentally friendly atmosphere. Customers may enjoy and indulge in their authentic Italian dishes within a warm and cozy atmosphere indoor, before heading outside to sit back, relax and enjoy the view on the Veranda with coffee, gelato, or Shisha. Simply said, Il Villaggio is literally and truly an Italian experience.

Crowne Grill
In the mood for an extraordinary restaurant, which promises a unique dining experience? Instead of wasting time perusing the menu…the Crowne Grill delivers a five-course meal to your table, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal in elegant surroundings. The Crowne Grill opened in 2011 promising a new concept for dining in Jeddah; an exclusive creation of The Crowne Plaza Hotel. The impressive selection of prime quality meat and seafood, from the Australian Wagyu beef and the popular American T-Bone steak to the Omani Lobster and King Prawns, guarantees that you are spoilt for choice among the variety of top ingredients. The interesting feature of this restaurant is the absence of an actual menu; instead the food is attractively laid out in front of you. From the salad, appetizer, soup, main course, and dessert, each person selects the dishes of a five-course meal, including the selection of meat. The choices of meats and appetizers are changed frequently enough to ensure that customers are always presented with exciting changes for their dining pleasure. In addition, the Crowne Grill’s generous portions allow diners to sample each other’s choices! Their selection of desserts is arrayed in front of you - you get to select one on the spot. To complement the meal, the comprehensive beverages menu includes Jeddah’s favorite drinks as well as many unique concoctions. The restaurant is a perfect mélange of Arabian and European décor; the warm colors and handmade silverware are thoughtful and creative touches. The Crowne Grill is a high-end restaurant that offers the best of the best when it comes to food, service, and ambiance. The Hotel Awards Magazine nominated them for 4 awards.

ROSEWOOD CORNICHE IS JUST A CLICK AWAY!
“Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance.” -Jon Franklin
Exploiting social media channels as a business tool has become as important as a company’s website and email address. More than a billion people energetically use Facebook each month, about 32 million of those are in the Middle East, while 6 million Twitter users come from this region. In 2010, Saudi Arabia’s Twitter usage increased by 240%. Social media has transformed business in a way that can no longer be ignored by those seeking to gain a competitive advantage over others. One renowned hotel in Jeddah has been working hard to engage with their guests and supporters online and has been steadily building its fan base. Rosewood Corniche, the luxury hotel overlooking the Red Sea, is the only hotel in the city, which enables customers to make room reservations through its Facebook page, proving once again that it always goes one step further for its guests. Facebook fans will not be diverted back through to the hotel website, but can make a quick room reservation through the dedicated application on the fan page. At the same time, the page is vibrant with daily posts in English and Arabic, updates and

photo albums of latest events at the hotel. The Rosewood Corniche monthly contest is another Facebook favorite. Twitter too is bursting with followers tweeting about their favorite hotel in Jeddah. The most popular social media event so far has been the dessert naming competition, which was held in September 2012. Fans were asked to name a new dessert option on the menu at the Chinese restaurant “Noodles”. The dish includes dark chocolate, white chocolate, fruit, vanilla ice cream and almond tuille and a mouthwatering photo was posted on Facebook. Numerous fans got into the spirit of the game and posted some hilarious suggestions. The new name was “Forget Me Nuts” and the winner was invited to Noodles Restaurant for a dessert tasting session and to meet Chef Zhang, the creative force behind the new dish. As the premier hotel in Jeddah, Rosewood Corniche redefines modern elegance and offers unparalleled personal service and world-class amenities, including 24-hour butler service for each of the 127 guest rooms and suites.

Booking Your Holiday with Just a Few Clicks! By Bassma Al Toaimi
Do you dream of a holiday, but then change your mind because you can’t face the nightmare of the process? You don’t have to run around the city for the best deal...your dreams can come true with some smart use of the Internet’s best travel sites.
STEP 1: LOCATION
Ask yourself what type of holiday you want. What are you looking for; adventure, romance, shopping, etc.? Your best resource for exploring new destinations is Lonelyplanet.com where you can explore almost every country in the world with unlimited information and suggestions.
STEP 2: DATE
Timing is crucial since your whole holiday is affected by your travel dates, from airline booking to accommodations, to sightseeing and leisure reservations. Plan your trip ahead of time as you can get better deals in airfare and hotel booking as well as a better chance on getting theatre and concert tickets.
STEP 3: AIRLINES
Keep your budget in mind while you surf the net and look for airlines. Don’t forget to check travelers reviews. Some of the best websites for airline booking are: Farecompare.com Decide how much you want to spend and when you want to travel, and Getaway Maps will overlay the lowest fares pulled from more than 500 airlines, most of the major U.S. carriers, as well as many international ones, for a selected range of cities. Flycheapo.com This is a great resource for learning about 45 low-fare carriers in Europe, but it only shows you who flies 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH
where; for prices and schedules, you’ll have to visit the airlines own sites. Kayak.com This site scours hundreds of online fares for the cheapest ones available. The more flexible you are, the better your chances of finding a great deal. Search for dates up to three days before and after your ideal travel dates, within a selected month, or on upcoming weekends. Bing.com/Travel Its “price predictor” forecasts whether fares will go up or down. Enter your desired itinerary and the site will return a list of flight options, along with a recommendation to either buy now or wait for a fare drop. But the tool is not omniscient. Predictions appear with confidence rates, which are important to note. BE AWARE: Be careful and make sure the websites you use are legit, and not a scam!
STEP 4: ACCOMMODATION
Hotels are one of the most important factors you need to take your time when deciding on, because they will be your temporary home away from home. Kayak.com searches 159,000 hotels worldwide, and about 10 percent of the places that it suggests have been recommended by real people, so the picks are well-rounded. (Hotels.com only lists 70,000 properties). New features allow you to sort the listings by location (using Google maps) and view photographs. Booking.com is one of the most reliable and
trusted sources for booking, in addition to being known for having great deals! Hotels.com allows you to search just one site for accommodations at more than 150,000 properties. You can find particularly good last-minute deals, which are updated daily. But even advance-travel planners can score big bargains with the sites seasonal sales, destination-specific deals and other special offers. For great deals in luxury hotels, Jetsetter.com is a private-sale site for luxury-hotel deals. In general, these kinds of sites offer invited members exclusive access to deep discounts for a limited time, and they work best if you’re flexible about where you want to travel. JetSetter can have 15 to 30 of these “flash sales” available at once – more than similar sites, which usually offer just a handful at a time. Vacation rentals are an especially good value for long stay and families because they generally offer more space and amenities for less than hotel rates. Homeaway.com offers the biggest selection of rental lodgings, with more than 325,000 listings worldwide.
STEP 5: PLAN YOUR STAY
This is the most exciting part of the planning process. Think about shows, plays, events, theme parks, and concerts beforehand so you can have extra time to book. Try Homeandabroad.com where you can plan a trip to one of more than 90 destinations from start to finish. Along with all the basics such as hotel, restaurant, and entertainment ideas, they provide unlimited suggestions for an average day. Keep an online document for all your travel details such as itineraries, hotel booking, vacation plans and any other trip related details. Try Google docs
PLANNING A CRUISE Cruisecritic.com Research almost anything about 60 different cruise lines and gather advice on everything ship-related -- from buying travel insurance to dining on board. Keep in mind that it is not a booking site, so you have to visit your selected cruise line website for prices. USEFUL WEBSITES: Tripadvisor.com has got it all! It helps you plan the whole trip by providing information about hotels, flights, restaurants, vacation rentals, and entertainment, with unlimited travelers reviews and suggestions. Zagat.com is a trip to online food heaven! It provides information about the top restaurants in a variety of countries. To all of you who appreciate fine dining, keep this website in mind. Chowhound.com An obsessive community of feisty people around the world share secret finds. The site features interviews with experts, videos of local culinary customs and blogs. Weather.com the best resources for delivering the essentials clearly. Get current conditions for 98,000 destinations worldwide, updated every 20 minutes.

AMOENA BEAUTY PRODUCTS for Breast Cancer Patients By Nilo Haq
Amoena is a company who over the past 35 years has been focused on supporting the minds, bodies and souls of women following breast surgery worldwide. Their main focus is to help fulfill a woman’s need for femininity and to restore a positive body image, renew confidence and self esteem. Amoena helps to produce and source innovative breast care products and services of the highest quality and design. To be specific, Amoena offers an extensive product line of bras, lingerie, swimwear, scarves, and breast symmetry products that fully address the needs of any woman, which are now available in Jeddah! Amoena was the first company to introduce revolutionary breast form products for breast cancer survivors. Unlike others in the industry, Cornelius Rechenberg was never satisfied with the status quo of breast forms. He continued to research ways to further innovate product design and wearing comfort to create a form that felt more natural. In 1984, Amoena introduced a 2-layer breast form with a firm silicone “ring” on the rear side to stabilize the form in the bra and a new shape that mimicked the anatomy of a woman’s breast. Their path to become the global leader began with the vision and determination of one man – Cornelius Rechenberg. His passion also elevated the standards of the entire industry. E- HEALTH: THE FUTURE IN SAUDI ARABIA
By Sattam Saud Lingawi, MD
The medical field has witnessed major leaps in technology in the past two decades led by the improvements in computer science and telecommunication converting the world into a small village where information is sent and shared by people instantaneously. Telehealth is the exchange of medical information from one site to another via electronic communications to improve patients’ care. Videoconferencing, transmissions of images, epatient portals, remote monitoring, and nursing call centres are part of telehealth. Products and services related to telehealth are parts of a larger investment by health care institutions in the delivery of clinical care with no distinction made between services provided on site and those provided via telehealth. First Scan is the first and leading radiology center in Saudi Arabia using this technology with both Makkah and Jeddah sites connected electronically together and hooked up to its radiologists in different cities via wireless network, providing ultimate medical care at no extra cost to the patient. The patient X-Rays are electronically archived in on-line servers and transmitted from one site to another for sake of viewing, reporting and seeking a second opinion. In Saudi Arabia, teleradiology is highly needed as the number of radiologists is small and the national demand is significant and the cost of recruitment of highly specialized radiologists is very high. Establishing such systems is of utmost priority for the health authorities in order to provide quality services to remote areas at a reasonable cost.
