Their focus on an emotionally literate education sets them apart from most local academic institutions. Emotional preparation is a continuous, ongoing process that involves everyone who interacts with the child both at school and at home. It’s important because emotionally resilient people are able to face challenges and deal with them in a manner that allows them to grow rather than give up. Teachers at Nahda Academy encourage emotional literacy by providing support to each child through their challenges and allowing them to experience the joy of success following perseverance. Emotionally literate people are able to build and maintain successful relationships throughout life.

The Academy develops this in children by supporting them in building friendships, working in groups and providing the space and guidance to develop social interaction. Requirements for admission: Completed application form pass entrance procedures birth certificate

Educators at Nahda Academy also realize the importance of being global-minded in a world that’s more connected than ever before. Global citizens are prepared for the world outside of their own home circle, and becoming one requires awareness of one’s own country and the different ways that people live, before thinking about those who live far away. The Academy provides children with a wide range of activities and experiences to prepare them for the world. Nahda Academy is a learning home with an environment designed and created to make children feel comfortable, protected, and nurtured. When relaxed, children are able to open up to learning through a creatuve and emotionally literate philosophy. Unlike many local schools, Nahda Academy believes in making the parents their partners in learning. We’ve been busy shaking up the business landscape lately, doing whatever it takes to realize Vision 2030. We’re walking – even running – into a new era, where technology and a knowledge-based and creative economy are in the spotlight.

Supporting our SMEs and Startups

The Saudi government has been supporting and investing in SMEs and startups across the country. The SME General Authority’s BIBAN interactive conference held in September last year looked at the importance of innovation and creativity in entrepreneurship, and encouraged a nurturing environment and technical infrastructure to support competitiveness among the country’s SMEs.

In November last year’s Misk Global Forum, over 100 speakers and 4,700 attendees from 75 countries participated in over 70 sessions, setting plans for the incorporation of technological innovation to achieve a competitive advantage at both national

and international levels. Tech giant Bill Gates also took part in our journey with his foundation’s pledge of US$100,000 to support Saudi initiatives, projects, and startups in coming up with creative solutions to global challenges.

The SME sector represents 99.2% of businesses in Saudi Arabia, contributing 20% to the GDP, despite some challenges that they face – lack of knowledge about government systems, and weak communication among stakeholders, among others. More than just pushing forward buzz words in the business arena, these recent initiatives backed by the government aim to help SMEs overcome these obstacles, and, importantly, understand the local market’s needs and the opportunities available to them.

Bill Gates’ pledge through his foundation, to support Saudi initiatives

Things are definitely changing at a rapid pace in Saudi Arabia as it focuses on these smaller businesses and revives that age-old entrepreneurial spirit. As our economy continues to go through these changes, our growing pains can only help us become stronger and better than ever before.

BUSINESS

Instagram to Shelf In the business of providing retail space Marketplaces that support local entrepreneurs have become popular in Jeddah. These places bring fashion, furniture, and food under one roof. Instagram entrepreneurs with limited funding are finding a lot of benefit in subletting at communitycentric markets.

Retailing on Instagram If you’ve bought something via Instagram before, you’ll be familiar with the process: placing the order, getting through the hassle of pickup or delivery and then waiting for your order to arrive at the scheduled time. While this is convenient for busy consumers, especially 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

if they’re already familiar with the brand, it lacks the undeniable satisfaction of shopping at a store where you can physically check the product before making a purchase. On the other hand, Instagram entrepreneurs might struggle to juggle an online presence while also managing production, delivery, and developing the concept. Being social media smart is essential; a chef may not be as good at marketing on social media as they are at whipping up a delicious pie. Additionally, small business owners might not even have the capital to keep a cashier, let alone rent an entire store in a mall or shopping district. This can affect their potential success.

Moving to a brick and mortar set-up doesn’t eliminate the social media aspect. Continuing to maintain their social media presence allows the small businesses to keep in touch with their online community, market the products, and also drive traffic to the stores. Additionally, Homegrown Market and Crate both provide social media support to their clients.

Making the Move This is where communitycentric marketplaces and concept stores are stepping as a solution. Shared retail spaces provide an affordable option for startups that want to move beyond the virtual community. By going retail, they can focus their energy on growing their business, and running and developing concepts. One such retail-space business is Homegrown Market, which takes its name from its vision to support local. They currently serve almost 50 clients with the majority being local entrepreneurs. Tamara Abu Khadra, Co-Founder of Homegrown Market, advises

small businesses to “Be realistic with retail price points and stay true to your brand.” They offer clients many services including display management, inventory and sales management, and brand positioning. Homegrown has rapidly gained popularity and become a central shopping outlet for Saudis.

Specializing in lifestyle, Sinwan Concept showcases handmade décor and furniture items by Middle Eastern designers. Besides offering shared retail space, Sinwan Concept also involves their architects and graphic designers in improving products that have potential. According to Co-Owner Hani Abdullah, collaborating with Sinwan can help designers learn how to improve their products and also acquire relevant skills.

START-UP BUILDING BLOCKS Tips on getting started on your business By Maha Adham

If you’re thinking of starting your own business in Jeddah, you probably already know that developing credibility for it is a difficult task. Certain things need to be done for your start-up to be trustworthy to customers, employees, and the market. Keep these few factors in mind.

1

3

A CLEAR MISSION

UNDERSTAND YOUR CUSTOMER

Stay focused! Identify both your personal and business missions. Are they parallel to each other? This will give you an indication if moving forward with your business idea is wise at this time.

2 GET SUPPORT

You need support on a personal and a business level. The former is for motivation, and the latter to assist you in execution and delivery. There’s no shame in getting support – in fact, this will give you a chance to focus on a growth strategy. 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

A clear understanding of your target market is essential. ‘Everyone’ is not your customer – consider demographic, psychographic, and geographic factors. The clearer these are, the better you can develop your offerings. Connecting with your customers is also great way to understand their needs, so try to get as much feedback as possible - without being too bothersome, of course. The right customer base will allow your business to thrive and build a brand near to their hearts, and win their loyalty and a good reputation.

Starting your own venture requires a lot of courage – don’t let fear stop you.

4

6

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

BRAND IDENTITY

Keep a record of your financials from day one. Costs easily accumulate, and losing track of your accounts, expenses, and receivables can be very harmful for your start-up.

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

5 CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Learning is a cycle that must continue from idea conception throughout the business growth. Evaluate gathered data to gain valuable knowledge.

Create your brand identity, measure it, and develop it. The brand must be reflected throughout your business, including yourself and your employees. Logo, packaging, product, tone of voice, and adverts are some of the factors that must align with the brand identity.

The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry is dedicated to providing support and protection to local businesses and start-ups. In particular, the economic and social development department has been placing much focus on start-up needs. The department runs a business clinic on a monthly basis for start-ups to benefit from subject matter experts, as well as presentations ranging from technical, management, and business-oriented skills. Also, once your business is up and running, you can contact the department to join the yearly entrepreneurs’ exhibition and meetup for excellent exposure and networking opportunities. WHO'S WHO

A SAUDI WOMAN AND

HER VIOLIN Gehad Al Khaldi on her vision and passion By Sumaiyya Naseem

Later, settled in her cozy armchair, she recalled her recent performance at a private women’s gathering in Park Hyatt. But it wasn’t her first event in Saudi Arabia, as she had also performed at a private event for Safeya Binzagr, given a violin concert at Dar Al Hekma, and played thrice with a cellist and pianist at the German Consulate. Her desire to perform for a local audience is backed by a firm purpose – she wants 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

parents to get interested in a musical education for their children. She believes that this will groom Saudi children’s minds, aptitudes, and thinking. Al Khaldi’s own mother signed her up at the Cairo Conservatoire because she knew the benefits of learning music alongside an academic education. As part of the Cairo Conservatoire Orchestra, she performed in various international and European concerts, including the Opera in Prague, the Youth Music Festival in Vienna, the Academy of Music in Rome, and Music Academies in Frankfurt, Montreal and Ottawa. After 18 years at the Conservatoire, she graduated with a degree in Violin and Music Theory, and a degree in Accounting. She later earned an MBA from Edinburgh Business School. When she noticed that Saudis were becoming more receptive to music concerts and orchestras, Al Khaldi created a business plan for the music academy she had been aspiring to open. It has been

As the melody rose and enveloped us, we remember that she – with her immense musical talent – is also the CFO at Magrabi, and is a long-standing finance executive in Saudi Arabia. Looking at Al Khaldi’s dual faculties in finance and music, her message becomes clear: learning music lends skills that are in harmony with other professions.

challenging so far, she says. “Nobody knows how to approve the institute. I’m knocking on all doors because I want a license to bring in professional musicians. This isn’t just a business for me, I want our children to get the same benefit from learning music that I got.” Her vision is for children to go through the process of playing music and practicing the five skills it develops: performance, correct intonation, tuning, mathematics for rhythm, and learning the musical language. Al Khaldi links her own music skills to her professional conduct. “Working with a team is like playing in an orchestra – if the tunes are not aligned the whole composition falls apart. There are many finance executives who are better than me, but learning music has contributed a lot to the way I work.” In her career, Al Khaldi has served many roles that involved her use of management skills. As a finance director at the King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, she became the first Saudi woman to hold the position in a military and government hospital. She has also been volunteering as Head of Finance and contributing as a Board Member at the National Home Healthcare Foundation, ever since Princess Adela Bint Abdullah launched the non-profit. She has served other executive roles, along with teaching finance at Dar Al Hekma and the University of Business and Technology (UBT). Al Khaldi also 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

ENTERTAINMENT

WHAT'S SO FUNNY? What comedy means to Jeddawis Comedy is great. It’s always been a great way to unite people towards a singular goal: to let loose, laugh, and generally have fun. One of the best changes we’ve seen in Jeddah in recent years is how we have opened up to comedy as a form of entertainment, a telling sign that we have, finally, stopped taking ourselves way too seriously.

a Jeddah-based company that supports and showcases comedians, tells us that their self-deprecation bits get the most laughs from the Jeddah crowd – humor that puts the spotlight on our mannerisms, habits, and the things that we do that make us so distinctly Jeddawi, whether it’s the way we talk, the way we dress, or the way we react in situations.

And that’s an important aspect of comedy, especially for us Jeddawis. Yaser Bakr, Saudi stand-up comedian and founder of AlComedy Club,

There is, surely, a line that can’t be crossed, especially when it comes to our culture and traditions. To this, Bakr says, “Connecting with your

were funny and should go into stand-up comedy. “Interestingly enough, being funny on stage is different from being funny in real life,” Bakr tells us. “Most people who are funny in their social circles are funny precisely because they’re in a group they’re comfortable with, with people they know and whose reactions they can predict. Sometimes, when they try the stage and do stand-up, they lose that connection, which, to some ‘funny people,’ is vital to what makes them come up with content that their audience enjoys.” That isn’t to say that comedians don’t come in all shapes and forms. “I have comedians who are actually introverts, but shine on stage, and there are others who have large and bold personalities but have to adjust a bit to translate well to the audience.”

What they all have in common, though, especially the successful ones, is agility – adjusting jokes in real-time and a quick, keen eye on what works and what doesn’t with the crowd in front of them. “Comedy is a lot of trying and testing,” Bakr explains. So what have they tried and tested that hasn’t worked for the Jeddah crowd? “It turns out dark comedy isn’t a hit with Jeddawis – a stand-up comedy style that touches on depression, or reflecting on the meaning of life.” It could be too depressing and dark comedy is lost on a crowd that really looks forward to getting away from the ‘darkness’ that already exists in their daily lives. But it could also be because we have only recently embraced the idea that paying for and going to a show to

We make fun of ourselves and the Jeddawi or Saudi stereotypes, and that’s always a hit with the audience. Like it or not, find it offensive or not, Jeddawis are easygoing when it comes to selfdeprecating humor. — Yaser Bakr

audience and being observant and sensitive to their reactions is a big part of what being a comedian is. If there’s a line that can’t be crossed, the comedian makes the call.” That’s also what separates comedians – professionals as they are – from us regular people, or those friends you have that you always thought DESTINATIONKSA.COM 39

watch a bunch of people tell jokes on stage is a legit form of entertainment that we’re willing to participate in and spend our money and time on. Bakr has high hopes. “Things are definitely changing in Saudi Arabia. Comedians now have an outlet and space to let their creativity and talents shine. YouTube was a great stepping-stone platform, and we’ve now taken it to the stage.” Add to that the support coming from the government – the General Entertainment Authority in specific – and we have a nice recipe for the evolution of comedy not just in Jeddah, but in Saudi Arabia.

THE WRITTEN WORD

POETRY FOR LIFE Sara Abuljadayel talks about her poetry and writing process NAME: Sara Abuljadayel AGE: 36 PROFESSION: Project

Sara Abuljadayel is a Saudi poet who recently did a booksigning event at the Sharjah Book Fair, the world’s third largest book fair, where she met some of her readers. Her poetry and prose collection, Just Wondering About It All, contains earnest writing that offers a comforting and uplifting perspective on life. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

When writing her first collection Abuljadayel knew she’d have to find a balance between her full-time job and creative writing, “I would go to the office early so I could get time to write. On less hectic days, I’d take a coffee break to write down some lines.” The trick that worked for her was to find a few minutes a day when

she could clear her head and write without interruptions. Being in a corporate environment doesn’t seem very inspiring for a poet, she explains, “Everything inspires me, whether it’s positive or negative. I believe you need to have an open mind to look around you and find what makes the world spin.”

you will end it.” Another poem, The World’s New Symphony, puts across an inspiring message, “The world’s new symphony is a reminder to have a heart, to share compassion, to make a difference.” When it comes to reading and writing poetry, Abuljadayel talks about a shift in perspective, “I have to put myself in the reader’s shoes and see how they might relate to my poems.” Speaking to her Saudi and international readers has revealed a common response, “They relate to the journey you take from one phase of life to the next. They are also able to see themselves in some of the situations I write about.”

Just Wondering About It All is available on most ebook platforms. A hard copy can be bought from Jamalon for SR 60.

Web: jamalon.com

Writing in English, the language of her education, allows her to reach a wider and more international audience. Abuljadayel’s writing process usually begins with a word or situation that keeps coming back to her, “I like writing about life instances and situations, and how they affect people, how people can learn

from them to carry on in life.” While that might give you the impression of a self-help book, her poetry is actually an expressive exploration of life. For instance, the poem The Strange Void ends with an encouraging declaration, “However long it takes, everything has an end. Your part in it is to choose how

Getting published is, of course, not a simple matter; Abuljadayel was used to writing for her family and close friends, but knowing that a larger audience would read her work concerned her, “My friends and family would give me direct feedback. When people around the world read my work, I’m not sure what they think or if their response is similar to my closer circle’s.” We couldn’t help but ask about her current read, “I’m reading Emirati writer Aysha Al Jahani’s book on parenting, The First Years Last Forever.” Sara Abuljadayel also enjoys the works of novelist Paulo Coelho, photographer Paul Reiffer, and artist Christian Lassen. saranabuljadayel

Radio: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow The evolution of radio in Saudi Arabia By Nadia Sakkal

Radio growth is at 35% every year in listenership and in ad revenue. And we have consistent growth from the day we launched to today. — Rasha Al Emam Alf Alf

Before TV, radio gathered our grandparents and their families, who were eager to listen to the king’s speech or Um Kalthoum’s latest song. Since then, the way we consume media on a daily basis has considerably changed.

United by Distance

While there is a variety of media available to us today, radio remains among the world’s favorites. In fact, people still like to engage in conversations and share their opinions with other listeners. Rasha Al Emam, Alif Alif FM’s Executive Director and a key player in the foundation of radio in Saudi Arabia, iterates that radio hosts ask questions relevant to anyone sitting at home or in their car. Listeners call back, share a good laugh, and want to listen to the same program by the same presenter the day after. “You feel the whole country is with you on the line,” says Al Emam.

Online Radio

Everything is online now, including radio. Podcasting, a relatively new phenomenon gaining popularity in the Middle East, is when a radio show is uploaded to a platform on the internet, allowing followers to download episodes and listen at their time and place of convenience. Alf Alif FM upload all their content online. To gain a better understanding of why there

is such high demand for podcasts, Mstdfr Podcasting Network host and producer, Khayra Bundakji explains that we live in the gig economy, where people are more likely to have temporary, flexible jobs – e.g. freelancing or contract based – and therefore flexible, less “normal” schedules. Whereas in the past we gathered at particular times to follow a show from start to end, it’s not as common anymore. This makes a personal solution with minimal distraction so important, thus the podcast.

Considering we’re a podcast, we expected our audience age group to be very young. We were very surprised to learn it went from 16 to 45 years old. People who listen to us on big platforms like Soundcloud don’t necessarily know we’re a podcast. — Khayra Bundakji Mstdfr

Radio Will Always Connect People

When asked where she thinks traditional radio is heading in the near future, Bundakji says, ‘There’s going to be overlap. I don’t think radio can die,’ as it is the first mass communication medium that made its way into people’s homes, giving it sentimental value. Moreover, Bundakji foretells radio will support podcasters the same way TV has helped YouTubers. A teenager turns DESTINATIONKSA.COM 45

“We Mean Business” Attire Saudi’s New Trend Toward Practicality

Fashion has always been a historical documentation of society and its current state of economics, from Coco Chanel’s jersey pants that were a consequence of war and limited resources,

to the American power suit of the 80s which reflected women’s climb within the corporate world. As forced “women who lunch,” Saudi women dressed – and shopped – at their leisure. Evening gowns and formal abayas dominated the shops because it reflected our most common activity: socializing! Now, with a 10% increase of women estimated to enter the workforce by 2030, you’re more likely to see women at the till as a cashier, rather than perusing the malls to kill time before she picks up her child from elementary school. And our local fashions are reflecting this new empowered woman.

Just seven years ago, women first gained the right to work in retail. Today, we witness their legally required presence in all boutiques with female offerings. Later this year, women will be given the historic right to drive. But what does this all have to do with fashion?

The clinic arranges everything electronically, so you don’t have to carry appointment slips or other paperwork around to get your treatment. A nurse will collect you from the waiting area, take you to the triage, and instantly send your vitals to the doctor, who will evaluate them while you’re on your way to the consultation room. If the doctor assigns any medication or lab tests, the pharmacy or

lab will be ready to attend to you prior to your arrival. My Clinic takes patient experience very seriously. Each day, the management team walks around the clinic to speak to any patients who might have concerns. Service agents work daily on follow-up calls for feedback. Nazer explains, “Our service agents encourage patients to discuss any negative experiences they might have had. We review the feedbacks we receive on a daily basis and we fix any issues that are highlighted. We’ve been doing this since the day we served our first patient.”

They are partners with Dr Soliman Fakeeh Hospital and Dr Samir Abbas Hospital to ensure in-patient services are directed to a trusted hospital that will provide the right medical treatment. Nazer explains, “Our healthcare partners are selected on the basis of medical credentials, hygiene and the patient environment.” My Clinic plans to expand in Jeddah and major Saudi cities like Riyadh and the eastern region. Orthodontics and Dental Care Frequently Asked Questions with Dr. Rawah Eshky Orthodontics is a speciality in dentistry that deals with teeth and jaw alignments. Dr. Eshky answers some frequently asked questions on the topic.

What’s the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist? Dr. Rawah Eshky is the Chairman of the Orthodontic Department at Taibah University. He is the only Saudi Orthodontist licensed in the state of Florida, and has practiced in the US for several years.

62 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

An orthodontist undergoes special training in a dental school or college after graduating dentistry. So every orthodontist is a dentist, but not all dentists are orthodontists.

Why should I (or my loved ones) get orthodontic treatment? There are two good reasons: esthetics and function. Having an attractive smile not only

seek earlier attention – children with thumb-sucking habits, a noticeable overbite, open bite, or asymmetry, for instance.

Are braces only effective in children?

There’s no particular age as long as the patient has healthy gums. However, the earlier the better, since moving teeth is easier in children than adults.

How many types of braces are there? There are traditional metal braces, ceramic braces (clear traditional ones), clear aligners (for teeth alignment), and lingual braces (attached to the back of the teeth from inside).

Does it hurt to get braces? Having braces put on is generally painless. Some people experience minor aches and pains in the first couple of days or so. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to alleviate any discomfort, but are usually unnecessary.

What usually happens after orthodontic treatment is completed? Retainers are then worn after the braces are removed to maintain the new position of the teeth. Some retainers are removable, and some are permanent or fixed.

Any advice for the public? It’s never too late to fix dental problems. Everyone deserves nice teeth and a nice smile. The earlier you consult a dentist, the better. What’s app: +966554434737 Dr_RAW dr.Rawahy_Eshky

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CONDITIONS FOR HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE By Dr. Rida Al Khadra, MD

While choosing the right doctor is crucial to meet your healthcare needs, the choice of your hospital will also determine the quality of care you receive and the resulting health outcomes.

COMPETENCY AND PATIENT EXPERIENCE Good patient experience starts with a smile, followed by care that addresses every aspect of a patient’s encounter, including the patient’s physical comfort, as well as their educational, emotional, and spiritual needs. Good Medical Practice is a guide on principles and values that describe medical professionalism in action. It’s important to be familiar with 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

this guide to understand what you should be expecting from the doctor. In general, doctors must be polite, considerate, and honest; treat each patient as an individual; respect patients’ privacy and right to confidentiality; and encourage patients who have knowledge about their condition to use it when they are making decisions about their own care.

PATIENT PRIVACY

Availability of private rooms can reduce hospital-acquired infection and provide privacy. Numerous studies confirm that hospital design based on “one room for each patient” promotes a better healing atmosphere for the patient, family, and caregivers.

HEALING BY DESIGN

This concept was understood and incorporated centuries ago in the earliest hospitals of the Muslim world. The extensive use of natural light, trickling water, and lush greenery creates an environment that promotes vitality and recovery.

VALUE-BASED PRICING

Hospital choice should not be based on the lowest price. This can be matched by lowquality services, therefore, the consequences could cost several times higher than what was previously saved. The same thing applies for high prices, if they are not equivalent to the services provided. Value-based pricing is the safest option.

ACCREDITATION

Among the most significant accreditation bodies are the Joint Commission International on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCI) in the US, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS), and the Canadian Council for Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA). A

national body for accreditation is the Saudi Central Board for Accreditation on Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI).

QUALITY OF SURGICAL PROCEDURES

A hospital that is keen to achieve the highest quality standards of surgery will have joined a quality program like the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACSNSQIP). The program measures and improves the quality of surgical care to avoid complications and develop the right treatment program. While seeking for the best healthcare provider, consider a hospital that adapts the concept of holistic healing of the body, mind, and soul, by preventing people from getting sick in the first place while applying the best global healthcare standards and pursuing divine ethics. Dr. Rida Al Khadra, MD is the Director and Senior Consultant at the Eye Center, and the Strategic Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing at the International Medical Center in Jeddah.

PREVENT FOOTBALL INJURIES Even CR7 Gets Injured! By Nadia Sakkal

We like to watch football, and play it ourselves or as our favorite player’s avatar. We might take this competitive sport quite seriously, but we’re not really experts on preventing injuries and we’re not all privileged with a professional coach to help us do so. Whether you’re a child or a grown-up, here are some tips, and hopefully, you’ll thank us later.

ANKLE INJURY / SPRAIN

HAMSTRING STRAINS

Especially for those who have a sensitive ankle or a history of ankle injuries.

If hamstrings are stretched beyond their limits, the muscle tissue can be torn. This can keep you away from football as long as 3 months.

• Tape or brace the ankle. (Find ankle tapes and braces at Oxygen Pharmacy.) • Wobble-board training assists in regaining balance and poise. (Find one at Sport Ghornatah.)

• Warm up for a minimum of 20 minutes. Start slow and finish at full pace. Not everyone will do it, you should.

• Rehabilitation with a chartered physiotherapist (Check out PRAHA Physiotherapy Medical Center.)

• Wear warm pants to support your hamstrings and repair your muscles. (Find warm pants at Oxygen Pharmacy.)

HEAD, NECK AND FACE INJURIES

Includes cuts and bruises, fractures, neck sprains and concussions. Note: Not all those who experience a concussion necessarily lose consciousness. • Think twice before you do a strong headkick!

• Keep your eyes wide open and reflexes ready!

KEEP THIS IN MIND

New to sports? Remember these! 1. Warm up, warm up, and warm

up some more! Do it for at least 15 minutes and make sure you stretch the muscles you’ll be using most.

2. Don’t go full force from the beginning. Follow the

10% rule: start slow and increase intensity by 10% every week.

3. Do your body a favor and keep it hydrated – this is

especially important in our hot, humid weather. Dehydration can lead to further injuries or make you more vulnerable to illness after your exercise.

4. Invest in proper basic equipment. You’ll need shoes

that are appropriate to the sports you’ll play. The older you get, the better it is to buy sporting guards, like ankle braces.

5. Cooling down after a good

sweat is very important to reduce soreness in muscles. Take 10 minutes for this activity by giving a quick walk or a set of stretches.

You can never be too cautious. If you have doubts on the seriousness of your injury, check out: KNEE CARTILAGE TEAR (TORN MENISCUS)

Knee injuries can vary from small tears – which may heal with rest – to larger cartilage tears. In this case, there is disruption with joint movement. What you really need are strong knees.

4 warm-ups you can do. • Leg press -no need for a machine – 2 sets of 12 reps • Single-Leg Stance - balance exercise – 2 sets of 60 seconds • Calf Stretch – 3 sets of 20 seconds for each leg • Hamstring Stretch – 2 sets of 20 seconds for each leg

THE HOLY QUR’AN An exhibition in Madinah

On a recent trip to Madinah, as we stepped out of Masjid An Nabawi after prayer, we heard a bilingual representative of the mosque announcing a freeentry Qur’an exhibition further ahead. Intrigued, we decided to go take a look. Upon entering, we heard a guide addressing a number of visitors about the Quran and its significance. Most of our fellow visitors were pilgrims from abroad who perhaps were visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time. Our guide went through the exhibition and the visitors, some of them elderly, tried to match his pace as he walked through several halls each covering a different 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2018

another round of spiritual upliftment – another round as it is, as we had just come out of Masjid An Nabawi feeling the peace and serenity that Madinah is famous for.

There were guided tours every few minutes or so as groups upon groups led by guides entered the exhibition. The tours were conducted in a number of languages.

Accompanying the posters were several interactive visual displays, each having its own audio outlets to provide visitors with an audio-visual experience. Seeing that and other state-of-the-art installations in the exhibition, we could see that huge amounts of money, skill, and expertise were invested in setting the place up to make it a top-notch experience. But at the pace in which our guide was leading us, we

There were, nonetheless, some visitors who couldn’t understand the languages that the tours were being conducted in, so they wandered inside the maze-like halls on their own. The posters in each hall were so edifying, it almost felt like

unfortunately barely managed to read the posters, let alone have time to listen to the available audio clips. We reached a hall where they kept one of the largest handwritten manuscripts of the Quran. Weighing over 154 kilograms, it was written by an Afghan, Ghulam Mohiuddin, almost 200 years ago. The manuscript was so intricate and beautiful that we were left in awe. The next hall displayed many age-old manuscripts, some of them dating back to just a few centuries after the hijra. These manuscripts were brought in from all around the Muslim World and were written by some of the most well-known calligraphers of the time.

STAFF PHOTO//MOHAMMED MIRZA

We stopped in a room with a gigantic screen to watch a short documentary on the Quran. Our next stop was a small souvenir shop with memorabilia themed onthe exhibition. Walking through the exhibition was like going through a book, turning page after page starting from when the Quran was first revealed to how it was compiled and to how organizations today are contributing to its upkeep. Definitely, a good addition to Madinah’s growing list of places to visit. On our exit we passed an exhibition under construction. We found out it might focus on the history of Masjid An Nabawi, so there’s more to look forward to. COORDINATES 24.465873, 39.609205

Saudi Football The Early Years By Mohammed Mirza

Before football, the main sports of the local population were falconry and horse and camel racing.

1920

SOURCE PHOTO/AHDAAF

Late 1920s to early 1930s

The King’s Cup commemorates Saudi Arabia’s most popular sport.

When the oil boom began, workers from many different parts of the world came to the Kingdom; this furthered the popularity of the sport among the masses.

Football, as we know it now, is the most popular sport played in Saudi.

Football was picked up and played on the streets of Makkah, introduced by Indonesian and Malaysian pilgrims. Full-fledged Arab football teams sprang up in Jeddah and Makkah. Sponsors, usually local businessmen, pitched in and tournaments began.

1927

Sports clubs that would become prominent in the current Saudi football scene came into the fray, including Jeddah-based Al Ittihad Club.

1939

The sport was introduced in the Eastern Province by Aramco employees, who are believed to have picked it up from British expats living in nearby Bahrain.

1941

Football came to Riyadh when Aramco officials were transferred to the capital.

1950

So many football clubs and tournaments were established that the Ministry of Interior set up the country’s first office for sports affairs. This eventually became the Directorate of Youth Affairs.

1954

The King’s Cup was established; it’s one of the region’s most coveted tournaments. Football became national and clubs and all-star teams began playing with neighboring countries. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 75
