This month is that time of the year when the fashion circus rolls into town. No other month causes a louder buzz among style insiders, designers and shoppers, all eagerly waiting to find out what will separate the sartorialists from the fashion victims of the world. In recent years, the region has moved beyond being a mere spectator of the international fashion scene. We invite you to get up close and personal with Saudi Arabia’s self-made star, Mohammed Ashi, the fashion designer who started his journey as an apprentice for Elie Saab and has now gained the nod of industry icons with his very own label, ASHI. For those who are more fashionably apathetic, worry not - no issue of Destination Jeddah is complete without articles on dining adventures in the city and fun-filled activities to keep you on your toes. Truth be to be told, what the city lacks in fashion weeks, we make up for by being naturally fabulous. And DJjust happens to be your ticket to the runway of life in the city. À bientôt, dear readers and may your days be filled with fun, flair and Chanel.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Financially Abused? What is financial abuse and are you a victim? According to womenslaw.org, it is the practice of “making or attempting to make a person financially dependent.” It is also the practice of coercing your partner into choices that would otherwise not be made. Examples of financial abuse include maintaining total control on financial resources in a household (or a personal relationship), withholding access to money, credit or identity theft, or job coercion. In Arabia especially, we rarely discuss this problem openly since it has familial stigma attached to it. Not uncommonly, financial abuse sneaks into the relationship and sometimes ends in painful breakups or more dire consequences

like imprisonment (in extreme cases). In my career I have witnessed women coerced into personal loans for their husbands who are either unable to repay it or deny their personal involvement in the matter. In other cases, women are chosen in marriage for their job. In fact, today a question about a woman’s salary and earnings can arise when marriage is proposed. Clearly, life has become more expensive and the single income household is no longer a sustainable model for modern family, but abuse should notbe tolerated. In many of these cases, the abuser has access to the financial and identity information of the “abused.”
• Do NOT obtain a personal loan for anyone else unless it is a very trusted relative or friend. Be prepared that you may not get repaid. Legally, you are the only liable person in this transaction. • When contributing to family expenses, keep a record of amounts and dates. • Do not discuss your pay or finances casually among friends and family members. Engulfed in a myriad of colors, fabrics, abayas and thobes, we sat with Buthayna Hafiz to hear all about her brand, Sayedat Al Hijab. Hafiz has been in the business for 35 years, ever since she executed her first abaya idea. She begins by saying, “I first got the idea when I wanted to go get a abaya for myself, but then the salesman was rude to me. So I decided I would do my own thing and not be in need of anyone.”
She continues, “I was the first in the Kingdom to design abayas and sell them. Not only that but I used very precious and rich materials. I had a balcony at home, which I used as a workspace. Bit by bit I gained recognition and started doing fashion shows in hotels. I was featured in a lot of magazines, with photo shoots even taking place in London sometimes.” Hafiz didn’t stop at abayas, she ventured into wedding dresses as well. “After attending a wedding in Madinah and seeing the bride, I was inspired to start my own designs for traditional wedding gowns.” Hafiz was even the first to incorporate colors into these gowns. Two elaborate ones in the Bedouin style, sequences and embroideries are on display at her atelier.
Hafiz went and bought the fabric, prepared her design and communicated it to her tailor. Upon being successful with her first abaya, she decided to not only design abayas for herself but for sale as well. Even though her father was the one to make sure she learnt tailoring and embroidery as a young girl, he was against her pursuing that as a business. Thankfully, her brothers were able to convince him. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 19
Her current residence also serves as both her home and atelier, with an entire section dedicated to Sayedat Al Hijab products. The section is exactly like you would imagine a designing genius’s place to be, filled with thobes, abayas and other outfits along with a glass display case, which contains elaborate tiaras for brides to wear. Hafiz’s success has not made her forget her first ever abaya, the starter of it all. “My first abaya was a black one with golden crochet embroidery. It is now grey though. But I still keep it safely in a box,” she says with a chuckle.
Nowadays, Sayedat Al Hijab continues to be an important name in the world of traditional dress and abayas, always producing creative designs and being a fashion force everyone aspires to be like. Tel: +966-12-6066846 sayedatalhijab

CREATIVITY + HEALTH IDEAS = FUN-FILLED WORK LIFE
Fun doesn't result simply in smiles and laughs—it brings a tangible increase in workplace happiness and productivity. By Fatmah Azam Ali
RULE 4
CHANGE YOUR
work place dynamics
Aha! The same furniture placement and everything can pretty much contribute to monotony in your life. When you spend so much time at a certain place, it’s important that it reflects your personality and makes you feel comfortable. Follow the Zen rule. Change the room dynamics and feel a new surge of creativity within you.
RULE 1
Be fearless ABOUT MESSES
It’s OK to be messy as long as it doesn’t distract you from your daily tasks. A mess might trigger a different sort of thinking pattern and give you an idea you wouldn’t have thought of earlier.
RULE 5
Different Routine
RULE 3
A change
OF SCENERY
RULE 2
Go for BLUE!
According to color therapy, blue fosters creative thinking. Now, go get some hues of blue in your office and get those ideas flowing.
24 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
Work at your favorite coffee shop. Take your laptop with you and enjoy the change. It has been known that a medium range of sound decibel actually promotes creativity.
It’s not just about the furniture and placement of things around you; it’s about changing your routine too. Take a few minutes off every hour and do some exercise. Meditation and a bit of yoga are wonderful options to revive your workday. Do something different as often as you like. You’d be surprised how different a slight change in routine would make you feel.
With all these natural health ideas being used creatively, you can absolutely be sure that nothing stays “just the same” in your life anymore. There’s always something new, something different to look forward to.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E S
OUR CHAT WITH THE
VISIONARY MOHAMMED ASHI In a region where few designers achieve international critical acclaim, Mohammed Ashi led the pack as the first Saudi to attain success with his avant-garde approach to tailoring. By Felwa Alhudaithy
With nods from the likes of Anna Wintour, and an eye for making the most beautiful collections, we can safely say Ashi Studio is well on it’s way to solidifying its status as a renowned atelier alongside Oscar de la Renta and Dior, if it hadn’t already. We sat down with the visionary himself to see the human side of the studio.
Have you always had a passion for fashion?
I have been passionate about art, design and drawing since I was 5 years old and I attended my first fashion show when I was 12. I started working on my silhouette and style of Ashi studio since fashion school. I was obsessed with creating a silhouette with a modern touch but was influenced by the old schools of couture such as Charles F Worth. I always enjoyed the cutting and tailoring process and the details involved in it. So I already had everything in mind set for my first collection due to previous experimental experiences and the influence of old couture houses.
I studied Fashion Design at the prestigious fashion school, Esmod International. Surely my school enhanced my techniques and my vision for design. My biggest challenge was to create a silhouette that became an Ashi Studio Signature, which is recognized today by our clients worldwide. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
COURTESY PHOTO
What did you study and did it help you as a designer?
Do you have a muse while you design? A perfect idea of a woman perhaps, a historical figure or even a socialite?
My muse is the Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson because she was an icon of fashion and elegance. I admire her strength and the way she fought for her rights. My client is an avant-garde sophisticated woman who likes to stand out and is looking for a glamorous and timeless look. She is an haute couture client.
What’s your inspiration and why aren’t you based in Riyadh or Jeddah? Why do you consider Beirut as your spiritual home and would you ever consider relocating to any other Arab country? What do you want Ashi Studio to be known for, five years from now?
I want Ashi Studio to be renowned internationally and to open more stores worldwide and expand the brand to cover all continents.
Do you think that your fame, internationally, established your status nationally?
The key of fame to any designer is the credibility gained from international press. Being featured in Vogue Italia and chosen as the only Arab designer at the Vogue/ San Pellegrino event gave Ashi Studio a lot of credibility and credit in the fashion industry.
My inspiration comes from art, movies, music and architecture. I am very much inspired by the age of couture (1940-1950s), which was the era of glamor and elegance.
I am not based in Saudi because unfortunately the country does not have the right production platform for such a field. We cannot find the right craftsmanship like the one available in Beirut. In Beirut they have the right fashion production platform that facilitates the creation of couture. For the moment, we have no plans to relocate the atelier. We have several points of sale in the major high end stores in big Middle Eastern cities such as Dubai, Kuwait, DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 27
Qatar and we also sell in London. In Saudi Arabia, the business of fashion has not matured enough to start building an empire of couturiers and pret-a-porter designers.
What do you collect and why?
I am a big art collector. I collect mainly paintings from all over the world because I believe that art works have a lifetime value. The older it gets the more valuable it becomes.
What’s your detox?
Traveling and exploring other cultures and norms.
What is elegance to you?
Elegance to me is attitude. I’ve always admired women who know how to carry themselves in public, who are confident and know what they want.
What do you do to keep your soul up to date?
I am constantly keeping myself updated by reading history, researching, listening to music, visiting museums and historical landmarks around the world. I always seek cultural activities wherever I go.
What’s the best advice you’ve received that has kept you going and growing?
The best advice was given to me by Linda Fargo, Senior Vice President, Women’s Fashion Director and Store Presentation at Bergdorf Goodman). She advised me to keep my emotions in the aesthetic designs but with a modern twist. This was a key to Ashi studio’s success. Web: ashistudio.com

What to focus on? T-Shirt Cuts
Gone are the days when your plain white or black T looked fashionable over your favorite pair of jeans, you can now easily find the updated basic T’s. Some have shorter front longer back, some with subtle chain or zipper on the bottom side, or there’s boxy cut. These minimal fashionable items can be layered for an edgy street look, and are always useful to have as part of your timeless wardrobe.
H&M SR 79
Avoid
• Offensive T-shirts (personally I’m a fan, but wear them at your own risk and please do not wear them to your office or your nephews graduation). • Anything you can’t understand. A lot of people buy prints without knowing what the message means. • Please do not wear something with un-intentional grammatical errors.
Denim
So everyone wears denim, and most people believe it’s the easiest item to buy when in reality it’s not. Levi’s CT SR 400
Acne Studios SR 950
First and foremost is the fit, always go for a fit that is flattering for your body, no matter how “in” or trending a fit is, if it’s ugly in the fitting room, it’ll always look ugly. Frame denim SR 1200

Avoid
Any designs that come with badges stuck on them as they tend to become outdated really fast.
Nowadays pants and cotton chinos are almost as casual as a pair of denim. Go with basics, start with light stone beige, navy blue, black and or navy green. These colors complement

THE ART OF AUCTIONS An ancient and elementary form of commerce, auctions have long been the best way to establish the value of unique and rare items. By Sahrish Ali
PERSUASIVE POWERS OF AUCTIONS A psychological bias that operates in auctions is the endowment effect, where we tend to over-value things. By encouraging us to connect the bid (our money) with the sale item, bidding on items lets us fantasize about owning them. This forms part of the psychological journey the seller wants you to go on to imagine owning this item in advance, so you'll place a higher value on it to make imagination a reality. Auctions use the principle of scarcity, whereby we overvalue things that we think might run out. Auction items are unique and scarce in time (after the bids are finished, you've lost your chance). Think how many shop sales
successfully rely on scarcity heuristics such as "Last day of sale!” or "Only 2 left in stock!” and you'll get a feel for how powerful this persuasion principle can be. The other principle used by auctions is that of “social proof.” We all tend to take the lead from other people; if everybody does something, or says something, most of us join in before we think about what we really should do. THERE ARE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF AUCTIONS Ascending-Bid Auctions
These auctions are carried out interactively in real time, with bidders presenting either physically or electronically. The seller gradually raises the price, bidders drop out until finally only one bidder remains, and that bidder wins the object at this final price. Oral auctions in which bidders shout out prices, or submit them electronically, are forms of ascending-bid auctions.
Descending-Bid Auctions
This is also an interactive auction format, in which the seller gradually lowers the price from some high initial value until the first moment when some bidder accepts and pays the current price.
First-Price Sealed-Bid Auctions Rules for Buying at Auctions 1. Believe nothing and check everything.
STAFF PHOTO/DINA AL AMOUDI
2. Understand the 'quoting' lies. Experienced buyers know that agents under-quote the selling price by about 20 percent. 3. Tell the agent nothing of importance. 4. Know the true value of items.
In this kind of auction, bidders submit simultaneous “sealed bids to the seller. The highest bidder wins the object.
Second-Price Sealed-Bid Auctions
Bidders submit simultaneous sealed bids to the sellers; the highest bidder wins the object and pays the value of the second-highest bid.
5. Get legal advice. 6. Do not bid too soon. 7. Keep your highest price a secret. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 47
AUCTIONS AROUND TOWN
There are a few different types of auctions that take place around town. Some are held in very informal settings, while others are more reserved. The most notable ones amongst all the other auctions are what we talk about here.
Abdul Raouf Khalil Museum Auctions
The Abdul Raouf Khalil museum presents rich cultural heritage. There are antiques and artifacts shops all around the buildings, which is where most of the auctions happen. They are free and open to the public, and there is no obligation to bid. Most auctions are held during the evenings after Isha prayer. There are indoor and outdoor auctions here. The outdoor auctions are usually set outside the antique shops. Then there are those that take place every two months. Rare and more valuable things are auctioned off here. We spoke to one of the antique shops manager, Saeed. He manages the shop called Kunooz Al Sharq. He advised those new to auctions to just observe a few of them to get an idea of how things work. He organizes indoor and outdoor auctions. The outdoor auctions are held right outside the antique shops up to five times a week. The indoor auctions, however take more time to organize. They are held almost every two months. 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
Port Auctions
Occasionally, there are containers shipped by businesses at the port and sometimes they are not claimed for quite a while. Containers that remain unclaimed for 60 or 90 days are auctioned off. Auctions are held at the port and the winning bidder takes the entire container along with its contents.
Sawareekh Market
Some traders at the Al Sawareekh market in Jeddah have come up with an innovative idea to promote their products through an auction system operating from the back of their pickup trucks. The open-air shops have gained popularity with customers interested in purchasing the different products on sale, mainly electronic items and devices.
Arabian Wings Auction
In the early days of December 2011, Arabian Wings launched the first auction dedicated to contemporary art in Jeddah in collaboration with SUNAIDIXPO, a leading company in event management. The first session of the auction was a home run in all respects, which spurred virtually everyone to enter into the Saudi market either through developing new art auctions or new galleries dedicated to contemporary art in Jeddah. In December 2013 and March 2014, the second and third auctions hit a big success with the idea of art auctions in Saudi Arabia. They haven’t announced any upcoming art auctions, but our fingers are crossed. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 49

You would not be the first to wonder how this Aramco employee, who is studying mechanical engineering, discovered his love for style. Al Qasim explains, “My passion for fashion comes from when I first started my tumblr blog and began researching a wide variety of styles until I came to a point which suited me personally.” Al Qasim describes his personal style as “a mix between contemporary and street wear with small changes depending on seasons and what is trendy.” Sometimes he resorts to creating his “own trend.”

The problem with style on Instagram is that once a certain influencer grows in popularity and creates his own style, a lot of people copy him in attempt to gain the same kind of recognition. No matter how unnatural it may look on that person, it is still copied, hence forgetting his originality while chasing followers and likes. — Bejal Al Qasim
ANUM BASHIR Qatar
Anum Bashir is a fashion force to be reckoned with. Her fashion blog Desert Mannequin, is all about having fun while channeling your inner stylist. She describes, “There is an amusing and whimsical side to everything that we should truly enjoy. Fashion and styling are no exception. If it makes you feel good, confident and adds that little kick in your stride, my advice will always be to go for it! Oh and shoes… DO NOT forget to have fun with shoes.” In Bashir’s opinion, people should delve more into the untapped worlds of fashion items. “I would love to see people experiment more. array of pretty little things can be yours simply by pressing the ‘Submit Your Order’ button.” As a fashion icon herself to many of her followers, Bashir recounts her own idols. Web: desertmannequin.com desertmannequin

AHMAD EL ABI Egypt
If you are looking for an extremely colorful account with lots of novel ideas and a good number of rubber ducks, you have found it. Ahmad El Abi may have graduated from the faculty of medicine, but has now shifted to art director and photographer. When El Abi first started he had no idea he would be this big on Instagram with more than 49K followers. He says, “I wasn’t sure that was going to happen, I spent almost a year taking photos without posting them online, but my friends’ feedback was really encouraging so I took the first step and Instagram really helped a lot.” His work reflects his love of colors. He describes the creative process he goes through, “Sometimes it is really random, I hear or see something from daily life or remember something from my childhood and I get some ideas. Other times it is really well planned so I would have a specific theme in mind.” As for the rubber ducks, El Abi reveals the secret behind them: 52 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015

ALI CHAABAN Kuwait
One of the names on the rise in Kuwait is Ali Chaaban, a senior art director and contemporary artist who merges art, fashion and humor. Becoming popular on social media is both a blessing and a curse. He elaborates, “On one hand your fan base grows and people start to take a liking to what you represent, your ideas and perspective. On the other hand you raise your own bar high, people get accustomed to a certain level of work that you always need to meet. It becomes a difficult challenge, both satisfying and frustrating.” A lot of his work portrays a sense of humor, hence making the message he aims at delivering more memorable.
He says, “I personally incorporate humor from time to time. Not on a regular basis, depending on the seriousness of the message. Humor, however, is important and most people underestimate the power of a good political or socio-economical joke.”
He describes his own personal style as Bauhaus attire, mixed with a little bit of grunge or an industrial feel. The dependence on metal in clothing is very essential; it gives you the futuristic bionic sense. — Ali Chaaban

Saudi’s Olsen twins; well minus the twin part since there is almost a three-year difference, Thana and Sakhaa Abdul are taking the world by storm with their chic looks, style advice and beautiful photo journal of their travel adventures. The sisters both got into fashion as children at their mom’s atelier where they grew up with fabrics and designs all around. Despite both being downright stylish, they definitely exhibit some fashion differences when it comes to their outfit choices. According to them, Sakhaa is “very classy in what she wears,” while Thana confesses she dresses “more like the 90s from chocker to denim jackets.” When asked about their fashion icons, they replied, “We are OBSESSED with two amazing Saudi ladies, Dina Al Jehani and Reem Al Kanhal.” Because they are now very influential on social media, they feel a responsibility towards their followers. They explain, “We started being more careful with what to say on Snapchat and we make sure our Instagram is always fresh and cool so our followers aren’t bored.” 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015

He even started his own brand, Chndy Clothing, for which he has really big ideas. “Honestly Chndy Clothing was just me testing the market in Oman and asking myself if people would buy some of my random illustrations. When I realized how fast I could sell I realized I should work harder to make it even bigger. So technically I'm going to nix Chndy Clothing and rebrand to a new concept.”
MOHAMMED AL KINDY Oman
Mohammed Al Kindy, aka CHNDY, has enjoyed creating things from a very young age. His nickname stuck with him since MSN Messenger days. His passion for crafting things reached a higher level with age making him decide to become a graphic designer then a fashion enthusiast.

Naif Al Haif, aka NAF, is an inspiration with great style, a super fresh look and a fashion brand Noble and Fresh, also NAF. He explains the origins of his brand name, “Since arriving to Canada, there have been many mispronunciations of my name and I had found a simpler solution by using the name NAF. Noble represents the high social status, as well as having high moral principles and ideals. And fresh keeps things current and crisp.” NAF has always been in awe of the fashion world. To him, beauty and art are all around.
“There isn't a specific style
of art that I solely draw inspiration from. The simplicity of seeing beauty created, and learning from the people who make beautiful things, inspires me.”
So we ask, what do you have in your closet NAF? “My wardrobe only contains amazing choices - it is much easier for me to feel inspired when I have a smaller number of exceptional pieces than when I see have more choices that feature items that are mediocre. I pay very close attention to the accessories that I choose, they pull an outfit together and tell the world how cool, polished and sophisticated you are.” Web: styledbynaf.bigcartel.com fabolousnaf / nobleandfresh

The constant traveling intensified his love of culture and photography. He describes his serious connection with photography, “I feel that it’s a form of expression that satisfies my nostalgic desires. This is why I use analog cameras to take photos. I try to communicate what I see, develop a concept and then go with it. I try to just keep it honest and raw, simple as that.”
Cheb Moha has a very interesting fashion style. He explains, “I used to shop a lot online and be into high end fashion. I still am, but with traveling and being on the move often, I’ve had to adapt my style to be more practical. FROP AND MUSO PAINTING THE TOWN
Frop and Muso redefine urban and street art with their funky graffiti. Let’s take a look into their world. By Sahrish Ali
Urban art is what got Firas Bawazir and Sami Al Amoudi started with Frop and Muso. After meeting through social circles, four years ago, they compared notes and decided that they both needed a getaway from their full time jobs. Something to take away from the daily grind of monotony. Firas Bawazir (Frop) works in the engineering field while Sami Al Amoudi (Muso) has a design background. Both studied in the UK, which added to the similarities between them.

“Paint, Paint” Program
What do you think about local street art?
The common misconception about street art is that people tend to confuse graffiti and street art. Graffiti in Jeddah has been booming; we have amazing talents here that are internationally known. Whereas street art in Jeddah is still young and has a long way to go.
How would you describe your creative process?
as long as that’s happening we try to keep drawing bigger and better.
What is your future plan for Frop and Muso?
We are currently involved in social projects that get the community engaged. We run a program called “Paint, Paint” which is held when we are invited to venues and events.
The program encourages art and community awareness amongst the young ones. Children are provided with an opportunity to paint on predrawn temporary walls. We hope to participate in more social projects similar to that, and of course to try and create more murals. KAUST often invites us over for live graffiti evenings.
We don't really think about that much, we draw to satisfy our own creative needs and

How'd you choose the name?
Firas: Frop was simply the first word that come to my mind when Muso asked me. Sami: It started as a username when I was in university, then it just got shortened to Muso and it stuck.
What’s your favorite piece of art that you worked on? Stoogie is one of our artworks in Muso’s studio. The color and randomness of the piece always keeps you looking at it and a lot of friends were involved during the making of Stoogie.

How do you think the local community reacts towards your street art?
Everyone has a different reaction to our work, but it always starts with a confused look, which we always find entertaining. It’s always down to the viewers’ perception. Some people love our art while others don't get it. We like that we get both positive and negative feedback as it allows us to reflect further on our work and keeps us wanting to push ourselves further. Art is subjective, so we always embrace all kinds of feedback. fropandmuso

JEALOUSY
the Good & the Bad How to tame the green-eyed monster within. By Sobia Javed
Jealousy - One word consisting of eight letters, but something so powerful that it can destroy relationships, foster ill feelings and provoke rage. In this social media era, we are bombarded with Facebook photos or status updates depicting people’s “perfect” lives.
Or open any magazine and there are pictures of celebrities looking flawless or wearing their size 8 jeans one month after giving birth. It’s all too easy to feel inadequate, inferior and lacking – feelings which simply incite jealousy.
What can you do to overcome the bad kind of jealousy? 1. Remember that it is a sin, and as Muslims, we try to avoid sins as much as possible. Ask Allah to help you deal with your negative emotions. 2. Read the Qur’an. It is full of inspiring stories, and there are numerous reminders to ponder over. Allah says in the Qur’an, “Do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others…”
3. Look at those that are less fortunate than you. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allah’s favor bestowed on you.” (Source: Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
4. Become a volunteer. 5. Write down the blessings you have.
(Quran, chapter 4, verse 32)
84 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
There are different types of jealousy and Islamic teachings distinguish clearly between them.
Hasad Destructive jealousy (or envy), which is referred to as Hasad in Arabic, is the absolute worst kind that one can experience. It is where you wish evil upon a fellow human being and feel elated when misfortune
befalls the person that you are jealous of. If someone else has something that you want, you feel rage. Not only does your desire grow stronger to obtain this thing but you ardently wish that it is taken away from the other person! It can manifest itself in other ways too, such as if another person is praised in your presence, you immediately feel angry and jealous, and you try to downplay their talent, or dismiss it Ghibtah In contrast to hasad, there is another type of jealousy called Ghibtah. This is actually a good kind of jealousy where you feel no malice towards someone who has something you want, but rather, it makes you strive to achieve the same.
completely. Or even worse, you pretend to join in with the praise, but use sly, cutting remarks to defame that person “innocently.” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood.”
(Source: Abu Dawud)
Imagine that! Place a piece of wood in fire and it is rapidly destroyed. In the same way, your good deeds are destroyed by jealousy.
Ghibtah generally refers to more spiritual rather than material things, such as when you see someone with more Islamic knowledge then you, thus inspiring you to gain more knowledge yourself.

MALCOLM X and KSA By Ahmad Sabri
This year many people in America and across the world commemorated the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, the influential Black Muslim leader who was shot dead in Harlem in 1965. But what does this have to do with KSA?
88 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
It turns out it has a lot to do with Jeddah and Makkah. Malcolm X was known for his defiance, his militant stances, and for being unapologetically supportive of the right to selfdefense even if it was in the form of armed self-defense.
But he was also a member of the Nation of Islam, an ideologically opaque group that preached racist notions. However, this changed towards the end of his short life when Malcolm X traveled to Hajj and received the cultural shock of his life. The shock
SOURCE PHOTO/HIPHOPANDPOLITICS.COM
You’re thinking, “How are Malcolm X and KSA related?”
that changed him forever and possibly cost him his life. He expressed this cultural shock in the letters he wrote in Makkah and Jeddah, from the Kandara Palace Hotel (recently demolished) to be more precise. One such letter, sent from Jeddah to his autobiographer Alex Haley, is still preserved and has the Kandara Palace Hotel logo on it.
In another letter, sent from Makkah, X states: “During the past eleven days here in the Muslim world, I have eaten from the same plate, drunk from the same glass, and slept in the same bed (or on the same rug) - while praying to the same God - with fellow Muslims, whose eyes were the bluest of blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was the whitest of white. And in the words and in the actions in the deeds of the ‘white’ Muslims, I felt the same sincerity that I felt among the black African Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan and Ghana.” His words marked a major shift in his thought and in the Black movement. His previous stance on inter-racial wars were moderated and his belief that there is no solution for the race problem disappeared. Malcolm X wasn’t surprised
that Muslims of all colors managed to overcome the race problem, rather he was surprised that in Islam there was no race problem in the first place. He wasn’t impressed by how Muslims struggled for equality in Hajj but by how this equality was flowing effortlessly. His remarkable words, “the spiritual path of truth - the only way left to America to ward off the disaster that racism inevitably must lead
to” and that “America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem,” are still relevant today with the current racial turmoil erupting in various US cities and communities, but is it relevant to us as well? This is the question to ask and issue to contemplate. Had Malcolm
X made his Hajj journey in 2015 would he be as deeply moved as he was in 1964? How successful are we now in implementing the teachings of Islam in the lands of the two holy mosques? Are we discriminating against any nationality, race, color, gender or class? This is our responsibility and our challenge whenever we remember Malcolm X, may he rest in peace.
Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it. — Malcolm X

ORIENTAL DELIGHTS OF
DUBLIN
Dublin, capital of the Emerald Isle, is at best an ‘add on’ to London for Middle Eastern travelers. This does the city and ourselves a huge disservice. The pained, anguished look on the father’s face is of a voiceless despair as he carries his son’s dying body on his frail shoulders. Beside him, equally desperate, the rest of the would-be immigrants stand facing Dublin’s quayside, where once the ships bound for America would have docked. Overhead, a solitary seagull squawks just as the sun, as if out of respect, begins to 92 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
disappear behind a cloud, taking with it the color of the River Liffey’s waters. The sudden greyness that surrounds me seems fitting for Rowan Gillespie’s Famine Monument to the million or so that died between 1845-52. According to the legend that brought me here, many more would’ve perished had it not been for the compassion of a certain Muslim ruler. As ever, I found myself in a non-Muslim country looking for its hidden Muslim stories, and despite its Catholic roots, Ireland was not disappointing me. The story goes that Ottoman Caliph, Sultan Abdülmecid, heard about the famine through his Irish doctor in 1847 and
immediately pledged £10,000 in aid (approximately £8m today). However he was ‘advised’ by the British to lower this to £1,000, so as not to upstage Queen Victoria, whose own donation was £2,000. This £1,000, which came all the way from across the other side of Europe has never been forgotten by the Irish. In the great classic, “Ulysses,” James Joyce recalls how “even the Grand Turk sent us his piasters” while the British stood by. Joyce, like all Irish folk, believes the British lack of action is to blame for the eventual catastrophe. My legend continued to reinforce this.
Famine Monument
As well as the cash, the Caliph apparently prepared three aid ships. However, upon reaching Ireland, these ships found their path to both Dublin and

Belfast blocked by none other than the British. So instead, says the legend, the Ottomans secretly docked in a little town just north of Dublin, called Drogheda, where they unloaded the aid and made sure it reached the starving Irish.
Dublin Castle
No official record exists of these three ships, but
in May 1995 a plaque to commemorate the incident was unveiled above the old Drogheda town hall by the Turkish Ambassador to Ireland, Taner Baytok. Prior to that, the story was only preserved in the oral history of the locals. At the time of the Turks arrival, Ireland had no Muslim community, making them amongst the first to stay in Ireland. That has all now changed and today, Ireland boasts a Muslim population close to 50,000. Many of whom know the story well. “Yes, we know the Ottoman story, it is a very nice one,” says Muhammad, a part-time employee of Dublin Mosque, as he shows me around. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 93
many Muslims, including myself until very recently, Muhammad had never heard of the fabulous heritage on his own doorstep.
Muhammad’s community began with the arrival of students from all over the Muslim world, including Saudi Arabia, in the 1950s. They came to study at the city’s famous Trinity College with most of them returning home once their studies were complete. Some however, decided to stay and go on to establish the ‘Islamic Foundation of Dublin’ now ‘of Ireland’, and city’s first mosque at number 7 Harrington Street in the south. In 1983 Dublin Mosque moved a kilometer west to the beautiful late 19th century Donore Presbyterian Church I now stood in. Constructed in the 13th and 14th century ‘Early English’ style in 1881 by architect William Stirling, it is one of the most handsome buildings on the city’s South Circular Road. A classic pointed arch roof sits atop a beautiful stone body made of granite with sandstone. Inside, thick pine wood arches hold up a slatted ceiling interspersed with delicate little carved vents and tall stained glass windows throw rainbows of light into the main prayer hall. The largest of these, at the front, now has a blue circle with ‘Allah’ written in gold Arabic script as the central piece. 94 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015
Trinity College
Outside, Muhammad proudly points to a recently completed extension. It also has charm, having integrated into the design, a heritage wall that says Donore National Schools AD 1891. “Inside there are new classrooms for teaching Arabic, Qur’an and also English.”
Just two kilometers north of here, I explained, inside the Dublin Castle, is the Chester Beatty Library, which has what is quite possibly the finest collection of Islamic books and manuscripts anywhere in the world, and it is free to see them! Wide eyed as I left him, Muhammad bid me farewell promising to visit the library himself and share this revelation with everyone at the mosque.
Next to the wall is a small restaurant, a halal shop and the IFI offices in the beautiful 19th century house Stirling also built. This is where the mosque’s library is kept. As we said our goodbyes, I explained to Muhammad that a library was actually the reason I had come to Dublin. He looked confused. Like Large stained glass outside.

Alfred Chester Beatty was an American-Irish mining magnate who amassed 20,000 items, mainly books, manuscripts and scrolls during his lifetime. More than a quarter of these - 6,000 are from the Islamic world, including 260 complete or fragmentary Qur’ans dating as far back as the 8th century, as well as examples of the finest Arabic calligraphy ever produced. The greatest treasure in this sea of treasures is the 11th century Qur’an by Baghdadi calligrapher par excellence, Ibn Al Bawwab. The library, which is really a museum, is split across two main permanent exhibits; the Arts of the Book and the Sacred Traditions and all the items on display are behind glass cabinets so crystal clear they are barely there. I found myself bashing my head seemingly against nothing, on more than one occasion as I tried to examine a personal favorite, the Ruzbihan Qur’an. Copied by Ruzbihan Muhammad Al Tab’i Al Shiraz in the mid 16th century, this is an explosion of gold Alfred Chester Beatty statue in Library.
laced with decorative Persian floral patterns in deep blues, reds and greens. The Qur’an script sits on pages painted so masterfully it was as if I was staring at the very first blueprint for every Persian carpet ever made. I am a bibliophile and I live in London, where I have often said the presence of the British Library is reason enough for my residence there. But as a Muslim now exposed to the glories of the Chester Beatty Library, I’m desperately on the lookout for a decent Dublinbased estate agent.

STAR GAZING AT MOON VALLEY The perfect isolated spot for star gazers. We’ve heard so many stories about Moon Valley from our friends who’ve visited the place before so we finally decided to see it for ourselves. We set off from Jeddah after Asr, but our 115-kilometer journey took quite long, as we went with a big group and faced the regular problems when you go with one; those being the frequent stops, missing out on directions and slow drivers. On top of that, our navigation app took us through a longer route, prolonging our journey. Moon Valley is known for its unique rock formations, some 96 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2015

It wouldn’t have been more than 10 minutes since the person who lit the bonfire left. We rushed to it and got branches from desert shrubs to keep the bonfire burning. Lighting the bonfire, which was the tough part, was already done. So we just had to regularly feed the glowing ember with planks of wood and whatever we could find that burns. of which look like they’ve been crafted by humans, but when you look closely there are no signs of chisels or pastels being used on these rocks. They have naturally formed over millions of years in such mind-boggling shapes.
When I looked up at the sky, there was a dazzling mass of stars, a truly unforgettable spectacle. I’d never seen anything like it on my travels around Saudi Arabia. It was the kind of place where one could almost see a 360° panorama of the sky.
What was even more surprising was that despite being located so close to Jeddah, the sky here was so clear, whereas in Jeddah we’d consider it a lucky day if we could count around 10 of them in the night sky. There was hardly any light pollution whatsoever. It was completely dark. Perhaps that is what makes this area so extraordinary. The night was moon-less, making it even darker. Everyone started sharing whatever little knowledge they had of astronomy. From spotting the Sirius to Mars – well at least thought we saw them; and our group seemed
I expected it to be an actual valley considering its name. I found it to be a plain desert with unique rock formations protruding out and mountains bordering the stretch of desert. There is a narrow road that runs through it. After hovering on this road from one end to the other we found a spot that still had the last few remains of a bonfire still burning. Those glowing embers in the dark night were such a beautiful sight to see. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 97
to go berserk by the findings. We even managed to spot a few constellations, including Orion’s Belt. At a distance we were able to spot some other campers at Moon Valley, but other than them it was just us and the silence that surrounded us in the darkness. There is something about silence that we all loved. Even in the city when we think we’ve found silence, in reality we don’t – the sounds of the ticking clock, the air conditioner buzzing, the car passing down the streets are such distractions that don’t allow us to connect with the quiet. This was a totally different experience for us, so silent that we could hear the soft whisperings of the wind in our ears.

Our way back was much easier. We didn’t follow the navigation app this time around -just relied on the locals, those being the ones sitting in petrol pumps on deserted streets. Moon Valley is a place that is a must for stargazers; a place where you can lie on the
ground and just gaze at the stars for hours whilst getting lost in the beauty and silence of the desert night. NOTE: If you’re going there download a stargazing app on your phone, such as Star Chart, to have an even more fun time exploring the skies. PROPHET SHUAIB’S ANCIENT TOWN This ancient dwelling near the town of Al Bad was home to the Midianites, the people to whom Prophet Shuaib (AS) was sent. By Mohammed Mirza
Prophet Shuaib is one of the four Arabian Prophets mentioned in the Qur’an. Archaeologists believe that this site, also known as Madain Shuaib, dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. Sitting around 170 kilometers from the city of Tabuk, Al Bad is easily accessible by car. The site is located around 100 meters off the road.
What’s notable here apart from the carved façade is the remarkable size of the edifice. The interior of the edifices surprisingly, are unadorned - a striking opposite to the ornate exteriors. Archeological artifacts and other important finds from the site are currently housed in the Tayma museum. HOW TO GET THERE Coordinates: 28.48823, 34.99920

The dwelling here has a striking contrast to the other Nabataean cities of Petra and Madain Saleh. This town, hand-carved out of the pink sandstone mountains manages to display its former glory and subsequent desolation both at the same time.
Newly constructed steps take visitors to the upper portions, where these dwellings carved in stone stand. These dwellings have elaborately designed facades.
