FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome back, Jeddahwis! Summer’s almost over and school’s just around the corner. Schools and businesses swing back into full gear and the city comes back to life. For this issue, we wanted to remind you not to get too busy to connect with not just your children, but family in general. We often feel hurried and miss out on the good things in life. We also don’t notice when something’s gone wrong until it’s far too late. For our special features, we looked at the two pressing issues facing children today: bullying and abuse. Each article will walk you through the signs of of it, how to spot it and how best to avoid it. Speaking of watching your children become young adults, one of the biggest milestones you and they will face is choosing where to study. Now lately, universities abroad seem to be getting favored over local ones. Hence, we went ahead and rounded up a few of our local universities and their accolades to show you the breadth of your options. Every now and then, we all need a break. Wanting a change of scenery happens regardless of where you live. What has rung true for us is that when we’re away, we actually miss our hometown. Now that September is here and the weather becomes friendlier, Jeddah will once again be breaming with activities, events and fun fare. So if you’re getting holiday blues, think of this instead…

PIONEER OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
She is the CEO of Doroob, a non-profit organization, and the face of emotional intelligence (EQ) in the Kingdom.
By Sumaiyya Naseem

Directing education and business with EQ.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a mother and an educator. I’m a teacher and the whole world is my classroom. Education has always been my passion.
What led you to Doroob? I never thought I’d be an executive officer because I was focused on teaching. When this position was proposed to me I realized I would be able to reach more children. I combined my passion for education with business. I upgraded my vision into touching the lives of 2.2 billion children through compassionate empathy. It’s still about kids, but the scope is bigger.
How would you define emotional intelligence?
EQ is the capability of using the energy of emotions to make better choices and wiser decisions without harming yourself or others.
How did you get started with emotional intelligence?
It started with a personal journey inspired by my children. Life is a blend of empathy and frustrations; I wanted to be a better mother and woman. I searched for change and found emotional intelligence. In 2009, I started EQ training at Six Seconds and my life completely changed.
What’s your view on the way EQ is perceived in the Kingdom?
At first, we were afraid people would relate emotional
It’s healthy to talk about fears and disappointments. You have to go through unpleasant emotions in order to accomplish your dreams. — Solafa Batterjee
intelligence with the female tendency of being emotional, but that has not been the case. We’ve discovered that there is a certain level of awareness and we’re trying to build on that. Saudis feel the need and see the value in EQ.
How is the Kingdom different to countries abroad?
State of the Heart is a yearly report published by Six Seconds. This year’s report sheds lights on some very interesting facts. First, the level of EQ in the world is
decreasing; this is alarming considering the conflicts. The great news is the level of EQ is on the rise in the Middle East – something to think about.
How are you bringing EQ to the Kingdom?
In 2015, I told the regional manager of Six Seconds we need to bring EQ to Saudi Arabia. We started with workshops directed at executives and change-makers. However, as an educator I believe that education is the tool of change, so I’ve been targeting EQ in education. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 27
What are the various campaigns?
We’ve been doing EQ Cafes, and global campaigns like Talent for Tolerance and the recent Seeking Refuge campaign. Through these campaigns we aim to create awareness by engaging various age groups and sections of the society. The participant gets a taste of what EQ means on a personal level.
What’s the role of Six Seconds in this?
Six Seconds has formed a global community of trained and certified EQ professionals. This network comprises of 60 officials that represent various countries. Six Seconds provides us with proper material, tools and assessments needed for workshops and sessions.
28 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
How can EQ enhance education?
The State of the Heart report highlights imagination, risk tolerance, and entrepreneurship as main EQ tools for success in education. Further, creating the right environment requires empathy, the school and students having goals and emotional literacy. EQ is involved in every step including teacher recruitment, student placements around the classroom and the curricula. I really encourage universities to use EQ as a tool or a subject of study.
Can you tell us about Doroob’s projects? We start partnerships to bring ideas and projects that support the education systems. Very recently we
signed a partnership with Design for Change in India, an organization that values empathy. The Sudan Youth Project provides scholarships and housing to smart children who come from financially difficult backgrounds. We have upcoming plans in various countries in Africa. doroob_sa solafabatterjee

Steps to Elevating CSR
The question often asked: How can CSR become relevant within the organization? By Amr Banaja, SEDCO Holding Group
30 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
1. Clarity on Goals
When setting up a corporate strategy function, make sure your goals are clear. In the short run, this will help align the stakeholders, and in the long run it’ll help you see the progress.
2. Alignment From the Top
Due to operational costs, the CSR practitioner will face hurdles if the CEO and board of the company are unaware of the long-term value of CSR.
3. Stated Values
To ensure that CSR is part of a company's DNA, it needs to be embedded in the stated values. Stated values answer questions about the safety and environment of the workplace.
4. Embedding the Value of CSR Within the Organization
Here are five ways to effectively embed CSR in your organization: • Make sure your top leadership clearly articulates the company’s commitment to corporate citizenship. • Make sure you have the right structure for executive officers to manage and monitor the company’s citizenship strategy and performance. • Engage your stakeholders. • Develop comprehensive CSR reports. • Link compensation to attainment of CSR goals and targets.
5. Strong Corporate Governance
Corporate governance calls on corporate boards and managements to actively engage stakeholders to face
today’s economic, social and environmental issues, both short and long term.
6. Stay Connected
Most young consumers and employees in this day and age are socially conscious and think that companies should support the environment and community. They are likely to maintain their relationships with responsible brands.
7. Aim to Create Collective Impact
Follow these two steps for results. • Coordinate your efforts so that each stakeholder can participate without overlap or repetition. • Always make sure there is constant communication between the various stakeholders, along with easily shareable and measurable performance indicators.
8. Never Give Up
By the year 2100, the world population is expected to double reaching over 14 billion. It is our duty to act responsibly to sustain what we have today for the future generations.
CSR IN KSA The King Khalid Foundation is one of the active organizations focusing on the proliferation of CSR in Saudi Arabia. They have initiated the KIng Khalid Awards to turn the spotlight on CSR programs that are effectively creating impact in Saudi Society. In addition, the CSR Saudi Summit is an annual event that brings together different industries to discuss trends and best practices in corporate social responsibility. This includes recognizing businesses with strong sustainable programs.
LITERATURE “Corporate Social Responsibility: Doing the Most Good for Your Company and Your Cause” Companies are expected to give back to society through charities, so this book delves deep into why this is not only useful for communities but for the business itself. “Social Responsibility and Business Ethics” This book in Arabic explains the importance of ethics to business growth. College-Life Hacks Don’t be the stereotypical frazzled college student; follow these tips to stay organized. By Deema Al Bugmi
SYLLABUS
KEEP A PLANNER
If you’re a visual person, a planner will go a long way. It will lay out all the things you need to get done during the week. A good tip is to sync your calendar to your laptop to your phone. Color-coordinate your work according to its category such as school, work, or to-do.
38 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
DOWNLOAD YOUR SYLLABUS
If available, log in and check out the lecture slides ahead of time. Download/print and go through the syllabus for each course. This will help you get an idea of what the content and assignments will be about. By doing so, you will be prepared for any questions thrown your way in class.
DON’T PROCRASTINATE
I’m guilty of procrastinating, so I know just the trick to help you avoid this nasty habit. Set yourself some dedicated study time. Turn your phone off, disconnect from the Internet and give your work your undivided attention for two hours. If you need more time, take a 15-minute break in between.
5
Struggles Every College Student Knows
1. 8 a.m. classes
FIVE MINUTES FOR CLEANING AND ORGANIZING
You will be amazed at what you can do in five minutes. Just set a timer and do some basic organizing chores: put papers in the right folders, delete those extra files you don’t need on your laptop and so on. It’s a simple way to always stay de-cluttered.
No comment. Just, sigh.
2. What is sleep? Getting good grades, having a decent social life and sleeping well seem to always be in competition in a balanced life. For some reason sleep is always the first out the window.
SLEEP WELL
I saved the most important tip for last. We always seem to overlook sleep and view it as a choice rather than a necessity. Sleeping well is not only crucial to your performance, but it’s also very important for your health. To get a good night sleep, set a sleeping time and stick to it no matter what. Customize when to sleep according to your schedule, but always ensure to get at least seven hours of rest.
4. Difficult professors You must’ve come across that particular professor that you just can’t seem to please. You can have William Shakespeare write a paper for your English Literature course and they still won’t like it.
5. Hell week 3. Getting grouped with slackers When you have to carry the workload of three other people because no one wants to put in the work.
Hell week is when even Satan sits back cheering on the professors. It’s when all midterms, assignments and projects are due IN THE SAME WEEK. Not cool at all.

How to Protect Your Children
Simple dos and don’ts to prevent child abuse. By Johara Almogbel
Don’t leave your children alone in strange places. If you want to take your child to Chucky Cheese, don’t just give them money and leave. The staff isn’t there to babysit. Even in friends’ houses, if you’re not intimately acquainted with the family, make sure your child has a way to contact you at all times. You should also pick up your child to and from school, and if they ride the bus make sure you are able to greet them at the door of your house or apartment building. 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
Do keep an open channel with your child. If your child knows they can come and talk to you about any little thing, you’ll make it easier for them to let you know something’s wrong. Always ask them about their day at school, a friend’s house or any situation you’re not available in. Also, provide your child with a family cell phone that they can call you on if they need to.
Do decide on a magic word system. We read this in an online post once and thought it was a wonderful idea. Sometimes, even with the best intentions children can get lost, and people with bad intentions can mislead them to thinking the predator knows their parents. Pick a word that your child will know is the password for anyone who knows you.
Don’t shift your child caring to others. Leaving them completely in the care of household staff allows your child to transfer their trust from you to an employee in your home and again, leaves them vulnerable. Even with a 9-5 job, parents must find a balance for childminding, and enrolling
them into preschool early is a good option as well. Sending your baby with your driver to pick up your other kids so you can get some shut-eye, however, is NOT. These tips are in no way a fool proof guide. Every situation and family is different. But in our society child molestation and bullying is a subject that is shifted over and swept under the rug, and we do urge you to take a moment and think about the effect any kind of neglect, whether intentional or unintentional, may have on your child.
KEEP THIS IN MIND GET SUPPORT The Ministry of Health runs the Protection against Violence and Abuse Program. They run a hotline for child abuse cases with the Social Protection Department of the Ministry of Social Affairs: CHILD HELPLINE - 166111 TO REPORT POSSIBLE CASES - 1919 For more information on awareness campaigns, centers for child abuse cases and initiatives, visit the National Safety Program website: nfsp.org.sa

By Sohila El Saadany
“Barakah Yoqabil Barakah,” (or Barakah Meets Barakah, in English), takes place in Jeddah and revolves around Barakah and Bibi falling for each other and wanting to publicly meet in a rather conservative society.
Although the movie is about a relationship and exhumes a lot of humor, Sabbagh is still not on board with calling it a romantic comedy. “I don’t like calling the movie a ‘romantic comedy,’ but I am used to it being described as that now. When I did the movie, it didn't occur to me that I was playing with this genre, I just wanted to create an organic, grounded and original script,” he elaborates.
42 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
COURTESY PHOTO
The film stems from the idea of space. Sabbagh explains, “I wanted to make a movie about public space over the past 20 years and how limited it has become now. But because it is a dry subject, I had to incorporate the “boy meets girl” story; it shows the struggles of meeting in public. I wanted to tackle issues with humor to voice the concerns and frustrations without tarnishing the society.”
Speaking of the script, Al Banawi describes what first attracted her to it. “I liked that the script goes beyond an apologetic and victimizing narrative, which I often experience watching international and local films about Saudi Arabia, the Arab World, and/or Muslims in general. Instead, Barakah’s script is funny for us local Jeddawis, and equally so for the international audience. I was captured by the script’s attempt to depict the individual characters rather than the usual categorizations of race, religion, class or color.”
About the possibility of the movie garnering reservations, she replies, “The love story depicted in the film is not foreign to people’s eyes; the film only narrates, often with little alteration, what people might have already experienced or heard of in their communities and their own private worlds. If anything, we shouldn’t be afraid of love, we should be afraid of hate.” She reveals her excitement during the movie’s first screening. “The realization hit me when we were asked to come forward to the stage for the Q&A segment. I was eager to hear audience’s questions and to listen with an open heart to the comments of film critics.”
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 43
As for Hisham Fageeh, he was surprised at seeing himself on the big screen. “The first time I saw the film in Berlin, I couldn't believe that there I was, almost 3 meters high. My veins were about to explode,” he laughingly recalls. Fageeh also explained how everything the movie required was done so immaculately. “The subtitles had to be really sharp to translate things idiomatically and linguistically. Also, each character has his or her own style of subtitles, so the older characters have their special way of speaking and hence subtitling. We even worked on having the laugh timing as the same in order not to miss a beat. So they’d be reading the punch line as the character utters it.” BYoqabilB

A FUSION OF
Arabic and Jazz
Composing and singing with Mothana Anbar. By Aabiya Baqai
I was born and raised in Jeddah. I traveled at the age of 19 to finish my undergraduate studies at the University of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA and have been practicing music since the year 2000.

Could you tell us a little about yourself?
How did your musical journey begin? I started learning about music from my uncle who studied music at an Egyptian institute. I’ve been experimenting with music ever since. When I was in college, I used music for class projects to express ideas and tell stories incorporating Arabic poetry in the process.
Your compositions are usually jazz, Arabic or oriental. How do you work with such diverse genres? Living in New Orleans, also known as the birthplace and capital of jazz, was a major influence on my music taste. Even though I accept all genres with an open mind, I consider jazz my comfort zone. Then of course comes the oriental and Arabic poetry part, which is tied to my heritage and culture. I am simply trying to fuse both worlds to come up with new means of expression.
What do you think needs to be done to enhance the music scene in the Kingdom? • Showing people that music can be beneficial. • Creating venues with easy access for musicians to openly perform. • Reintroducing music in schools and opening institutions that teach music and all kinds of arts is also an option.
What is your dream project? "Musical projection" is something I've been trying to develop for a while. Basically, it's using the technology of "projection mapping" to create an interactive short play using music and poetry. Hopefully, it’ll become a reality one day.
Tell us about your future plans. I have a lot of things on my agenda. Firstly, I want to have my own studio so I am working
towards that. Secondly, I will be attending some private concerts here and in maybe Bahrain and Dubai.Last but not least, more tracks to come. The upcoming three tracks will be more on the modern side, not the old poetic style.
What piece of advice would you give to upcoming musicians? Be persistent in achieving your goals and dreams. Always work on improving yourself and remember that there will always be obstacles. Most importantly, have fun with the art you're creating.
What would be one of your favorite moments on stage? The moment I lose sense of place and time and all that’s left is the overall journey and emotions carried by the music and its meaning. This really intensifies my happiness on stage. mothannaanbar mothanna-anbar

Bringing Home the Holidays
Don’t try and bring home decorative souvenir type artifacts and expect them to recreate the space you experienced.
This is for those who think, “I wish my house looked like this,” when abroad. What you’re really picking up is the vibe of a place. It’s all about creating the correct atmosphere in the space. In my opinion, this all comes down to colors, shapes and smells of a room. The place I always want to bring home with me is Greece. When I think of Greece, I think scents of the ocean, blues of the sea, soft sand and of course the white washed buildings. It’s always better to start with an empty canvas, a room you want to completely redecorate, but if you cannot, then there are simple changes you can make to transform the space.
70 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
Starting point, scent; probably the easiest thing to change. Avoid using clothing perfumes as room spray; the consistency is too heavy and the scents end up glazing the floors and nothing else. Go for candles and room sprays (not air fresheners). For the scent of Greece, I brought home Jo Malone Wood, Sage and Sea Salt candle. Next, colors, textures and
shapes. For that I suggest creating a color palette and sticking to it. In this case, shades of white, blue and a dusting of sandy colors. Keep
the textures soft, but like the rocks of the islands contrast with the sand of beaches, add rougher textures. A good place to do that is in the cushions or curtains.
Finally, dimmers dimmers

NURSE Saudi nurse Mona Al Harthy takes the lead. By Moromah Al Jefri and Zahara Quresh
Over the years, nurses have been stereotyped as medical students who failed to complete their medical degrees. Mona Al Harthy, a professional nurse, aims to break that stigma. Al Harthy graduated from King AbdulAziz University with a bachelors’ degree in nursing. She, like the majority of nurses, started off as a bedside nurse where she was solely responsible for fully looking after three to four patients everyday. In the past, the number of Saudi women working as professional nurses was low and Al Harthy is
84 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
among those who strive to change this by encouraging more Saudi female students to take up nursing as a profession. Al Harthy states that it is widely believed that the job of a nurse is to check vital signs only, but it is much more than that. It has a lot of opportunities such as being promoted to take up different sub-fields according based on knowledge, skills and preference. Al Harthy herself was promoted to Nurse Clinician where she was assigned to manage the staff patients. Furthermore, she had to brief the nurses about updates in policies of the hospital or the World Health Organization.
In addition, many intensely criticize women who choose to become nurses and are quite conservative about female nurses’ long night shifts. “It is not typical in our society for a girl to be a nurse,” comments Al Harthy, because they believe that women are sensitive, and hence not capable of handling pressure that the job requires. A major misbelief exists due to the comparison between doctors and nurses. Al Harthy emphasizes that doctors and nurses have entirely different professions, but they attain the same goal - to provide high standards of medical care.
She believes that nurses who have studied the discipline are responsible for bringing about a social change regarding this perception. Al Harthy initiated a group aiming to improve nursing in the society called Saudi Nursing Pioneering Committee. This committee heads six other subgroups that cover a wide array of topics related to the profession.
I hope in the future nursing will be chosen as a profession and not an alternative. — Mona Al Harthy

There are many challenges in the Arab culture that Al Harthy talks about. The most common
is not receiving the support of the family. She admits, “My family was supportive but other members of my family weren’t.”

Parenting Tips
1. Teach them to worship Allah alone. “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.” [31:13]
2. Teach them to be dutiful to their parents.
Luqman Al Hakim was known for the excellent advice he gave when it came to parenting.
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years.” [31:14]
3. Teach them to be grateful. “Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” [31:14]
4. Teach them that Allah is well-Aware of their good/ bad deeds. [And Luqman said], “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.” [31:16]
5. Teach them to establish prayer and be patient. “O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” [31:17]
6. Teach them not be boastful, arrogant and proud. “And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone selfdeluded and boastful.” [31:18]
7. Teach them to walk and talk humbly. “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.” [31:19]

Thikr is the singular of athkar, which means to remember Allah verbally or non-verbally. Remembrance of Allah is one of the greatest acts of worship and best acts of obedience. Shaikh Abdulrahman ibn As Sa’di said, “The phrase thikrAllah includes everything by means of which a person may draw close to Allah,

For example, it is makrooh (discouraged) to remember Allah (verbally) when sitting to relieve oneself, when having intercourse, during the Friday sermon (for the one who can hear the voice of the khateeb (orator), when standing during the prayer, at which one should be focusing on the recitation, and when one is drowsy.
The type of remembrance I’m talking about is the thikr apart from prayer.
1 Command
of Allah
“So remember Me; I will remember you...” (02:152) “…and exalt (Allah) with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.” (20:130) “And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening.” (76:25)

The Prophet said, "Allah says, 'I am as My slave thinks I am, and I am with him when he mentions Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws to Me a hand-span length, I draw near to him a forearm's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him in a hurry.'” (Ibn Majah)

The metaphor of Edge of the World perfectly depicts the wondrous mountain, Jabal Tuwaiq, better described as the Tuwaiq escarpment. It adapted the name Edge of the World for its natural aesthetic. Driving to the location is recommended
in a 4x4 vehicle because the road is difficult, rocky and long. Also, climbers should go with a group or someone who has already been to the spot before. Many times, hotels can help with such arrangements. It takes about two hours to get to Tuwaiq, a minimum of two hours to explore the location and two hours to get back. Using GPS could be tricky as network services could re-appear and disappear the further people go.

FARASAN In case you’ve had enough of its pristine beaches. By Mohammed Mirza
To find artifacts, you’d need to take a closer look into the archipelago, comprising of 84 islands. From remnants of the Roman Era to ancient burial sites, all are dotted over various parts of the islands. For most tourists today, the most easily accessible historic sites are the ones that are the most apparent and closest to the main island. The beaches, the nature and a bit of snorkeling are what most tours have to offer. You’ll probably have to explore these places on your own.

The Farasan Islands have been earmarked for their clear seas, virgin beaches and coral reefs, but many are unaware of the islands’ rich history. Though the written sources on Farasan Islands are limited they do suggest that the archipelago has played an important role in maritime trade from the early Roman period.
AL QASSAR VILLAGE The construction of the fort dates back to the 18th century and it has seen a number of skirmishes since. There is a long-standing well right next to the fort; it’s highly likely the residents of the fort used it as their main source of water.
Dating back to the Roman Era, this deserted village is one of the oldest inhabited sites on the islands. The houses in the village are made from coral and mud that has hardened into solid rocks.
Restoration has taken place at the site and it forms one of the biggest attractions on the islands, mainly due to its proximity to the biggest resort on Farasan and the seaport.
Next to the village is an ancient Kedmi site that has large A two-meter high wall surrounds each house, which is geometric stones resembling Roman columns. generally one or two rooms.
OTTOMAN FORT Standing atop an elevated ridge of coral-stone on the outskirts of the main town, this Ottoman fort is strategically located from where you can see a good portion of the island’s seas. The fort has just one big hall inside, and it’s more of a fortification due to its small size. It’s a representation of local architecture as it was constructed using locally found construction materials. The walls are made mostly from coral rocks and the roofs using palm fronds.

BEIT AL REFAI Dating back to 1922, Beit Al Refai was built by a well-known pearl merchant, Munawar Al Refai. The house is considered to be the archetype of Farasani architecture. The intricate work on the gypsum walls in this building is unlike any other in the Kingdom. The ceiling of the exquisite majlis is engraved with colored ornaments. Similar to Beit Al Refai is the house of Hussein Bin Yahya Al Rifai, which is also on Farasan Islands, though lacking in grandeur when compared to the former.
AL NAJDI MOSQUE Pearl merchants were one of the richest members of the society on the Farasan Islands. Like the houses they built, the mosques that were funded by them are also most noticeable. The Al Najdi mosque was constructed by Ibrahim Al Najdi, who was one of the biggest pearl merchants on the island. Surrounded by houses on all sides, the mosque sits inconspicuously in a densely packed neighborhood.
The walls of the mosque are decorated with plaster-recessed ribs and each window on the qibla wall is topped with gypsum-decorated arches. The wooden mimbar and mihrab are said to be brought from India and are adorned with colorful decorative ornaments.

BALAD OPENS DOORS
FOR THE DISABLED, ORPHANED AND ELDERLY Unforgettable experiences for visitors and organizers, alike. By Aabiya Baqai
Every three months with directors of different organizations and sponsors, people who are physically challenged and children who have lost their parents are invited to tour Balad and discover its wonders. Another trip is arranged twice a year for the elderly coming from Makkah.
The tours consist of assistants guiding the visitors in every way possible, like helping in pushing the disabled wheelchairs, describing the sites and showing all the main hot spots. There is always a stopover at Bayt Jeddah, where they get to enjoy folklore dances and participate in the performance.
Because it is a favorite for many, it becomes imperative that an informative and fun trip to Balad be organized for them,
Next comes a thorough tour of Bayt Jeddah, explaining the life of Jeddahwis in the past. The visit also consists of a trip to the library and gallery to hear more tales as well a chance for the visitors to draw with the painters. The district’s residents welcome them with open arms.

The elderly enter these old houses with tears in their eyes, reminiscing old times. It’s all truly heartwarming.”
“The highlight of their visit is that they always seem happy. It’s always surprising for us as well because we discover new things about them every time,” AbuSulayman concludes. Web: jeddahbliss.com groups/JeddahHeart jeddahbliss

HISTORIC KSA
Hajj Zainal KSA’s Hero of Education More about Saudi’s first school. By Nora Alourfi
Founded in 1905 by Hajj Mohamed Ali Yousef Zainal, Al Falah School was the initial step in eradicating illiteracy in Saudi Arabia. Hajj Zainal was a pioneer in every sense of the word. Prior to the creation of Al Falah, ‘schooling’ composed exclusively of rote memorization of texts.
Hajj Zainal was so dedicated to his cause that he didn’t even wait to get a permit to formally open the school; some of the school’s students had their first lesson in one of the houses in the Old Jeddah district. Hajj Zainal’s funds also came from his own pocket. Indeed, his wife went to the extent of selling her own jewelry just to raise enough money to finance the school. Eventually, after the establishment of the Kingdom, King Abdulaziz himself supported Al Falah.
102 DESTINATION JEDDAH SEPTEMBER 2016
Hajj Zainal spared no efforts in making the school the best it could be - and cared deeply about its students. For some graduates, Al Falah School wasn’t the end of the journey, since it sent its exceptional students to Egypt and India to continue their studies. Al Falah’s alumni have gone on to accomplish remarkable things. Among them are Prince Mish’al Bin Majed,
governor of Jeddah; Hisham Nazer, former oil minister; and Abdulwahab Abdulwasie, former minister of Hajj. Of course, it is impossible to name them all as it is said that half of the fathers of Jeddah have graduated from Al Falah. Truly, Al Falah School and Hajj Zainal have left a longlasting mark on Saudi society. COORDINATES 21°29'13"N 39°11'21"E
Today, Al Falah School comprises all levels of education, from grades 1 – 12.
