FROM THE EDITOR
SAY HELLO TO 2015! Oh January, the month of new beginnings and promising days ahead. As we hang our calendars, the Destination team feels a surge of excitement at the great many things we have in store for you, our dear readers. There are changes up ahead and we do hope you stay tuned, because it is going to be epic. But first, we decided to start the year where everyone’s stories truly begin, their homes. This issue of Destination focuses on the abodes and little sanctuaries we build for our families and ourselves. At the end of the day, we want you to turn the pages and see yourselves reflected in the articles we have put together. We invite you into the homes of wonderful Riyadhis who have created beautiful living spaces that are a reflection of themselves and their sensibilities. Peer through the pages and be amazed by the 14-year old Saudi boy who toils and tends his very own garden in the city. There’s also something special for homegrown Riyadhis in need of a little nostalgia. Take a trip down memory lane with a round up of all the wonderful childhood mementos we’ve cherished growing up. Destination has taken it upon us to make sure that you would never have to say that Riyadh is boring. For those wanting to do some treasure hunting, why not get out of your comfort zone and visit Haraj? Or perhaps have a foodie adventure by going through our list of cheap eats under SR 10. If that’s not enough, check out what’s hot in the art scene or be inspired to do some yoga. Yes, this edition is going to keep you busy all month long! You’re welcome. At the end of the day, what makes a place your home isn’t the pillars and gravel it’s built on. A home is where you feel you belong, regardless of where you are. The beauty of it lies in the relationships you foster and the stories you create within it. Riyadh — it is your home and we’re here to make you see how sweet of a home it is.

BUSINESS
FINANCIAL PLANNING with Reem Asaad
Growing wealth No easy mission I get a lot of questions on how to “grow wealth.” This is a natural question for all cash holders, and it involves so many details and ingredients. Many view investing as only purchasing stocks, land or even gold. These are pretty much the tools (aka asset classes) known to Saudi investors. Then comes the question: How much should I put into each bucket? Should I throw it all in one asset to reap maximum return?
In finance lingo, this is referred to as “capital allocation.” What it really tells us is how much of your intended capital goes to each “asset class.”
Are you a millennial?
In other words were you born in 1980s or after? Recent studies show that this category tends to invest their cash and savings rather conservatively. According to a UBS study, they hold their savings:
52 %
in cash
28 %
in stocks
For other generations, the weightings are nearly the reverse:
23 %
in cash
46 %
in stocks
Typically if you’re in your 20s you ideally hold 60 percent or more of your portfolio in stocks. Stocks are considered high-risk assets followed by
bonds then cash in descending order of riskiness. But investing conservatively — or investing very little and holding your money in cash — runs counter to conventional investment advice for the young, which says:
Invest aggressively now, while your long-time horizon will allow you to recover from any losses, so you can reap the benefits of growth. So in the occasion of a new year and hopefully a new beginning, I recommend that you start educating yourself on investing. Among many, investopedia.com is a personal favorite to learn the basics of finance and investing. You should expect to come across a long inventory of terms and glossary but be patient. RTV will eventually be the knowledge hub
RIYADH, THE KNOWLEDGE CITY
Heading towards an innovative economic future with Dr. Abdulaziz Al Dawsari, CEO of the Saudi Techno Valleys. By Jou Pabalate
The Riyadh Techno Valley (RTV), the first fourth generation Science Park in the city is poised to be the science hub akin to the Silicon Valley in the west. In an interesting conversation with Dr. Abdulaziz Al Dawsari, recently appointed CEO of the Saudi Techno Valleys under MOE and previous CEO of RTV shares some insights on the new era of innovation in the Kingdom.

FROM PROSPERITY TO DIVERSITY
The discovery of commercial oil in 1938 changed the economic trajectory of the young Kingdom and propelled it to undergo rapid national development. Oil continues to account for 90 percent of the country’s exports and 75 percent of the Saudi government’s income, making it an economy heavily reliant on a single source. Nevertheless, the Kingdom is making great strides in establishing a more diversified economy in recent years. Such
initiatives are being undertaken to ensure steady economic growth as well as lessening the volatility of the domestic economy from global recession.
AS DR. ABDULAZIZ AL DAWSARI SHARES:
A Knowledge Based Economy fosters creativity and innovation, which can lead to business opportunity and innovative products. Saudi Arabia as a developing country wants to be able to diversify outside of an oil-based economy. With the
skills, resources and tools, we can develop our human capital and discover other areas of expertise that may be equally valuable for economic growth and sustainability. This means we are making the Kingdom equip, if not able to have competitive advantage in the arena of scientific advances, applied research and intellectual innovative products and services.
Saudi Arabia as a developing country wants to diversify outside of an oil-based economy. – Dr. Abdulaziz Al Dawsari
RTV, AT THE CUSP OF INNOVATION
The eighth national development plan encourages Saudi universities to establish Science Parks in order to transform the results of academic research into industrial and commercial applications. Thus, the King Saud University Council passed a resolution approving the creation of the Riyadh Techno Valley in 2009. The ninth and now the tenth national development plan adopted the transformation towards national Knowledge based Economy aiming to have a sustainable economy and development. All the big universities in the Kingdom have now successfully commenced working on their own techno valleys across the Kingdom, e.g. Makkah Techno Valley, Dhahran Techno Valley, Jeddah Valley, etc.
According to Dr. Dawsari, RTV will eventually be the knowledge hub that would develop the new sectors to attract business and economic growth through Research and Development.
RTV sits within KSU and has been allocated a total area almost 1.76 million sq.m. In its second phase of development, the project has had an allocated budget of $116 million so far. $60 million is still in the pipeline to further fund infrastructure and architectural developments.
RTV also aims to enhance innovation, entrepreneurship and research on an individual level. During Dr. Dawsari’s term as CEO, he led initiatives like the Techno Valley Institute (RTVI), to prepare the graduate’s from the scientific departments in KSU to be trained in the R&Ds centers at RTV to be eligible and very well trained future employees in the industry.

SAVING SPACE By Anousha Vakani
Use boxes and baskets to organize all the little things in your closet, drawers and even the fridge. Keep separate boxes for t-shirts and pants, for jewelry and makeup and for canned goods and fresh produce.
An organized home is a happy home, but it’s a little too easy to fall into the trap of a messy one. Here are five tips to get you started on cleaning up your closet.

WHAT TO DO WITH your small SPACES? By Sohila El Saadany
Large spaces seem to take all the credit; spaciousness attracts people’s attention, and creates a sense of comfort. So what to do if you are stuck with a small space? How do you create the illusion of it being larger?
Cool Colors, Bro
Soothing colors relieve stress and fool the eye into thinking rooms are bigger. They expand spaces and give way for eyecatching décor. Avoid the use of dark colors, because they have the same “slimming” effect on rooms as they do on clothes. Rooms with light blue, green or purple are easier to decorate with flashy colored knick-knacks. Cool color schemes keep rooms fresh and inviting and add a calm candor as well.
Itsy Bitsy
Contrary to popular belief, tiny rooms do not have to contain tiny furniture. A large piece of furniture is a lot better than tiny pieces all around. The latter may give off a clutter-like vibe. Large items will also draw attention to themselves rather than to the size of the room.
Let There Be Light
Always make sure there is light, as it flows into a room and expands its interior. It also adds a cheerful effect. If you have limited or no access to natural light, use some creative lighting with unique lamps or spotlights. According to interior designer Bronwyn Poole, focusing more on uplighting (floor lamp or wall lights) makes your living room appear bigger. Torchieres (tall lighting stands) are also an excellent way to make light spring off the ceiling, hence making the room’s top look higher.
24 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Surround the room with mirrors or glass. That will make the light bounce right off and create a marvelous effect in making the space look bigger. You can incorporate the mirror effect into the furniture itself, like in using a glass coffee table, or hanging glass frames.
Another trick that imitates the mirror effect is using clear furniture pieces.

MUQEEM, SERIES I By Jou Pabalate
Alāan Artspace opens a bridge between contemporary ideas and Islamic ideology through the exhibition “Muqeem, Series I” by Egyptian artist Ehab Mamdouh. An Artist’s Calling Ehab is the embodiment of his work and vice versa. Born in Egypt and having spent most of his life in Saudi Arabia, the 39-yearold is a convergence of an informed Muslim upbringing and a career path that explores modern media concepts. Mamdouh’s childhood is marked by frequent visits to historic mosques for Friday prayers, Islamic art museums in Cairo and repeated pilgrimages to Makkah for Hajj.
26 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
This resulted to an inclination to view the world from an art historical perspective and a natural curiosity to delve into religious and cultural contexts. Following his filmmaking years as a director and producer, Mamdouh’s passion for the visual arts was reinvigorated upon being exposed to the burgeoning art scene in Saudi Arabia. It inspired him to undertake a creative project that expresses Islamic cultural identity while using his acquired technical and digital skills.
In discussing how he arrived at the concept of Salah as the main focus of his first artistic endeavor, Ehab said:
“I would observe people praying as I enter the mosque and how they would do so around the kabaa. These observations made me think a lot about all these real life images and figures that create a different unified visual language. From these and the fact that prayer is the second most important pillar of Islam, the idea of Muqeem started to form.”
A Mesmerizing Call to Stillness According to Mamdouh, the name Muqeem was inspired by a verse in the Qur’an, a Sura called Surat Ibrahim that talks about how Prophet Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) was asking his God to make him a man of prayer. The word itself was chosen after the artist read a wide range of books on Islamic prayer and noted that God never mentions prayer in the Qur’an unless the word Ikamah or Muqeem is mentioned before it. As Mary Teeling, director of Curatorial Programs at Alãan Artspace and the exhibition’s curator adds:
“Like all great art, the work engages on several levels simultaneously: visually, emotionally, and intellectually, Mamdouh’s powerful and contemporary portrayal of the human figure in the five gestures of prayer in Islam have a clarity of vision and a pristine graphic beauty that engages the viewer no matter what one’s belief. Muslim and non-Muslim, and those with no faith background at all will appreciate this work.” Muqeem was inspired by a verse in the Qur’an.
A New Voice for Islamic Contemporary Art The prayer figures or “prayer vectors” in Muqeem, Series I, represent a surprising departure in the world of contemporary Islamic art, which more often than not employs contemporary forms of calligraphy as the artistic focus. The exhibition managed to open a dialogue for the art community to delve deeper into the Islamic contemporary art scene and revisit the paradigms and beliefs that dictated the status quo.
The artist’s use of the human figure to express an aspect of the Islamic faith goes far beyond what we have been seeing. – Alāan’s owner Mohammed A. Alsudairi, who immediately recognized the importance of Mamdouh’s work.
Dr. Maha Al Senan said, “Muqeem is a veiled extension of Islamic art, in accordance with the standards by which the latter was classified in the past, yet it is shaped by the cultural development of our society and by the intellectual growth that the artist experienced on an individual level.” Through this work, Mamdouh incites us to think and wonder — the true mark of a successful visual artist today.

A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T
At that time, among the first founders of hip-hop in Saudi Arabia were Saudi rappers Abadi, Klash and Qusai.
Part 2 Big Hass By Big Hass
Hip-hop arose in Saudi Arabia between 2000 and 2001. The globalization of the Internet and the growth of Internet users in the region point out a small sign of slight liberalism and openness to the Western culture. No matter how conservative and procensorship the Kingdom is, contemporary rappers and their explicit lyrics reached even quicker than ever before. Saudi youth previously relied on music stores to savor on some cool tunes. Eventually, Arabic blogs started emerging and interactivity with hip-hop became a click of a button away.
28 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
From hip-hop enthusiasts’ bloggers to rappers from the GCC, it wasn’t really a wellmonitored beginning as it was mostly circulating around teens who didn’t have role models to properly guide them. The way hip-hop primarily evolved in Saudi Arabia perpetuated in a redundant and vulgar sequence of mutual dissing and overused topics.
Hip-hop unfolded into the inexperienced hands of Saudi youth: techniques were unpolished, the core of hip-hop was misunderstood and unhealthy challenges became a trend. It took the form strong language and the main purpose is to shake up and intimidate the opposing rapper.
Mostly known to all, famous for his smooth hosting skills in “Arabs Got Talent,” Qusai stands out as hip-hop pioneer in Saudi. His commercial success and presence under the public eye does not nevertheless undermine his involvement in local social issues, in supporting local artists and reflecting a more accurate image of hip-hop.

HIP-HOP
One of the earliest rappers is Abadi, who hasn’t been releasing a lot of material lately. On the other hand, Klash started on the wrong foot but eventually corrected his mission statement as a rapper and changed his rapping style, lyrics and attitude vis à vis the essence of hip-hop and the new generation of local hip-hop fans. His recent messages are all mainly social and community issues. He is known for his straightforward lyrics and senses of controversy.
Jeddah Fam Group
It wasn’t until Qusai came back from the US that rappers started to rap in English. The scene is very diverse.
It’s important to state that there are some underground artists who are non-Saudi but have been living in KSA for more than 15-20 years. For instance, hardcore underground hip-hop group Run Junxion consists of 6 MC’s and 3 producers. Although they come from different parts of the world, they are a family. Their nationalities range between Syrian, Saudi, Canadian, American, Indonesian and Eritrean.
Most of their lyrics are in English, which makes their fan base a bit limited. In the Kingdom, the English language is not favored due to a local conservatism and strong attachment to heritage and culture. It is not rejected but rather considered secondary. Another group to mention is Jeddah Fam, a group that mixes hip-hop and RnB, using both English and Arabic languages. The group carries positive and uplifting messages. Consisting of eight members, originating from Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and Somalia, the group envelops Black Drama, who is considered one of the best rappers to rap in Arabic and
Ayzee, an R&B artist with a very promising future. In the current music scene, artists such Klash, Slow Moe, Moh Flow, Majeed and Abz also stand out. Alongside Qusai and a handful of artists, Klash have been in the scene for quite some time. As for Slow Moe AKA, Saudi Thugz, highly influenced by hip-hop legend 2PAC, carries on a controversial persona. Furthermore, there are other artists in the scene, but who aren’t as active as the ones previously mentioned. To name a few, MC Rakan, The West Side Us, The West Coast G.Z., DEVI.G and others. I will be shedding light on more artists and other elements of hip-hop in future issues. At the end of the day, it is a fact that hip-hop culture has become a universal one.
My aim as a supporter of this culture is to show people in Saudi Arabia that this culture can be used to express, advocate the voiceless and to revoke unjustified power-battles and egocentricity. The ultimate motto is to stay real! — Big Hass

DĂŠcor inspiring
movies By Sohila El Saadany
Some movies not only portray great acting, interesting plots and breathtaking cinematography, but also inspire decor trends. Movie sets imply the personality of a character to the audience, possibly before the character even appears.
THE GREAT GATSBY (2013 version)
The novel-based movie has won an Oscar for best Art Production. It did not only feature amazing costumes to fit the 1920s era, but also portrayed a wide variety of vintage glam decor.

Gatsby’s Bedroom
It gives off a metallic sense due to the richly polished hardwoods, cupboards, and poles that give off a bronzy texture. The carpet, bed cover, chairs, and wallpaper sections
are all in harmony with their shades of gold against the bold amber poles and black bed. The spiral staircase on the side leads to the splendid closets at the top.
DOWN WITH LOVE (2003)
The set of this movie proves that a large room does not have to be filled with furniture all around to be chic.
THE HOLIDAY (2006)
It is only natural that this movie portrays two dissimilar sets since it is about swapping the lives of two very different people.
The movie depicts a big living room, but with very minimal furniture. Only a couch with colorful cushions, two sitting chairs and unique tables.
The drapes are of a softer shade of pink, the lamps and low hanging lights are also a nice touch as they engulf the room in tenderness.
You have the rustic cottage vs. the modern apartment. The cottage living area contains a combination of patterns and solid colors all against its beige background. The California house living area is spacious and is characterized by its neutral colors of white, grey and beige.

BEST MOISTURIZERS
Tried and Tested By Zareen Muzaffar
I have used and tried many moisturizers based on my skin type, and many times it has been a case of trial and error. Choosing the best moisturizer takes time but some brands offer the best quality and options for your skin type. Here is a list of some that have always worked without causing breakouts, redness or other issues.
Clinique: Clinique’s Moisture Surge (for sensitive skin) is perfect for dehydrated skin that craves moisture. This effective cream not only gives a supple look to the skin, it helps retain moisture in the skin and reduces water loss. Available at Gazzaz, Paris Gallery, Harvey Nichols, Debenhams, Faces, Sephora, Va Va Voom
Chanel: Chanel Hydra Beauty moisturizers are available in gel and cream form. Both are ideal for combination skin but richness differs in both products. Gel form is lighter and absorbs faster while the cream is slightly richer and thicker in texture. Those with dry to combination skin can try both with equally good results and did I mention the fragrance is just amazing?
Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Sephora, Va Va Voom (Al Othaim Mall)
Clarins: My absolute
favorite Multi-Active day cream and night cream by Clarins provides a great moisture barrier to my skin and even after numerous washes my skin doesn’t feel over dry or tight. You can layer your preferred sun screen after applying the day cream if heading out during the day. The night cream helps the skin look refreshed and supple by morning. The MultiActive cream range is for all skin types.
Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Faces, Sephora, Va Va Voom

La Prairie: This product may be on the pricey side, but consider this as an investment for healthy skin. La Prairie line of skin care is highly effective and their Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask is magic in a bottle. The texture might be a little too thick for those with oily skin but a little goes a long way so you don’t need to apply a lot. Apply at night before sleeping and wake up to healthy glowing skin.
Shiseido: Shiseido is one of the leading brands when it comes to skin care. They day protective moisturizer with SPF 15 gives a radiant glow to the skin making it a a perfect base for makeup application. But this product may be too creamy for those with oily skin leaving their T-zone a little shiny, but it’s great for dry to combination skin type.
Available at Sephora stores across Riyadh

YOU’VE GOT TO TRY! A First Taste at Nozomi By Johara Al Mogbel
There’s been a recent surge in new luxury Asian eateries in town, and for once we approve of the trend heartily. The more options for noodles in Riyadh the better! One of the more recent ones is Nozomi, a new London-based franchise that opened a really swanky place on Dabab Street right off Tahlia Street.
We’d been hearing good things about it this month, and it seems to be the new hotspot for sushi – loving Riyadhis, so off we went to explore the unknown! The place really is the new flavor of the month, as it’s packed to the gills with people. We ordered chicken goyoza, volcano shrimp, Mr. Chan roll, cod fish maki roll, spider roll, maki, and for dessert, samurai, which we ordered purely because it’s named awesomely. Japanese mint lemonade and berry mojitos round it up.

in faisal’s Garden In an era where iPads and electronics rule the entertainment sector, and games like Flappy Bird are making it to the number one downloaded list, we’ve been noticing a lack in the number of children who have hobbies or passions. Gone are the days 54 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
when a child would spend hours putting together a model airplane, making potions out of chemistry kits, or building castles out of Legos. Gone were the children who’d spend their time outdoors collecting insects and things, and the ones who’d spend
their time stargazing. Or so we thought, anyway, until we heard of a remarkable young man who happened to be an avid gardener. We were so impressed, we decided to sit down with him and get all the details of his unusual (for Riyadh) hobby!
STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED AL DEGHAISHIM
By Johara Al Mogbel
At first glance, Faisal seems like the average teenager. If the average teenager was well-dressed, that is. He greets us politely in an impeccable thobe and leather shoes, and right away we’re shown to a table that’s bustling with produce that was entirely from his garden. The garden itself is a lovely serene place, with plants and trees growing uniformly in little plots and the smell of peppermint in the air.
We’re told that there are close to 70 different kinds of plants, and frankly, we’re not surprised. Faisal picks up a small white and purple pepper from a basket that he’d just gathered.
the side. He had accidentally eaten one of the super-chilis while traveling, and was so impressed he searched around for the seeds to bring back home and plant in Riyadh. Luckily, it was one of his more successful experiments. “I’ve been trying to grow these grapes for four years but for some reason they keep drying up,” he said. He answers to my query about the slightly brittle vines on an archway. “And this is my latest experiment. Black watermelons!” He showed us a bag of seeds he’d ordered from
Japan, and then walked us to a little greenhouse to the side. He’d knocked half circle metal frames into an empty plot in the greenhouse, the tendrils of watermelon vines circling the frame. “They’re green from the outside, and black on the inside. This isn’t the season for them, of course, but hopefully in the summer they’ll give me healthy produce.” The metal frames were another experiment, he’s hopeful they might encourage the watermelon to grow better if they’re off the ground.
“This is the hottest pepper on the planet, supposedly. One of these is the equivalent of 10 of those normal ones,” as he points to a green chili to THE HOTTEST PEPPER ON THE PLANET
DESTINATIONRYD.COM 55
At 14 years old, Faisal is more knowledgeable about planting than most urban adults. Completely self-taught, he knows the seasons and climates each plant needs, the kinds of soil required, and insists on everything being organic, even the fertilizer he uses. “Organic fertilizer somehow manages to keep bugs away too, so we don’t even need to use chemical pesticide,” he said, with a small measure of pride. “And when your whole process is organic, your vegetables taste better.” And he’s right, the grapefruit he slices and hands over is one of the sweetest I’ve ever tried. I asked what his favorite plant to, er, plant and he gleefully shared, Karkadeh [hibiscus].
Having brought up the subject of climates, we were curious to what he did with his garden in the summer. We were worried the beautiful space would dry out, which would have been such a shame. But he brushed away our concerns. “Most of plants here are okay with the heat, and the ones that need extra care are taken to the greenhouse. Our biggest problem is water, to be honest. It’s scarce in Riyadh, and in the summer we need a lot more to combat the heat waves, so sometimes I have to order an extra truck of water to help out.” The house gardener helps him out sometimes, but 90 percent of the work in the garden is his. “I work on it every day. Something like this needs a lot of care and you can’t neglect

it. So I’m here as soon as I’m back from school and work for a couple of hours until the sun sets,” he said. Looking at the carrots he’s digging up to use in the house later, we wonder if he cooks. He does, and we decide we have just found our most favorite teen in Saudi Arabia. There’s a little kitchen we missed coming in that’s not far from where the garden is, and sometimes he takes in his produce and cooks there. There isn’t a specific dish he likes to cook but noodles are a recurring meal because it suits the type of plants he grows, which is another thing we approve of. “I wasn’t very good at it in the beginning. But then I started watching my aunt cook and helped her out, and I got better.”
Faisal raises pigeons as well in a specially built shed to the side. He pointed them out by type. Some of them were racers apparently, and others could possibly send letters.
some fertilizer to turn your own yards into organic food factories, thus making everything and everyone greener in the future. Get on it, please.
Very impressed at this point, and feeling hopeful other kids might leave their electronics and pick up gardening too, we asked Faisal what a person starting out might need and if anyone could pick it up. “Yes! Everyone can! What you need is good soil, mostly. You really need good soil. Some tools and some seeds too. And the patience to see it through.”
It’s nearly sunset by the time we’re done, and the garden, framed by an arch covered in climbing vines behind which there is green everywhere, looks calm, serene and beautiful. There’s karkadeh tea waiting for us on a table for one last treat before we cease taking advantage of Faisal’s hospitality, and it’s as good as we thought it would be.

KEEP CALM AND
YOGA ON Riyadh just can’t get away from being attached to the terms “slow-paced,” “lazy” and “boring” but folks, we have news! This business capital is buzzing with activity and some of us just need to catch a break, so what do the men in town do to relieve all that stress? Why, yoga of course!
Stay fit
Contrary to popular belief, yoga isn’t just about relaxing and loosening your muscles but it also helps in giving you more energy and flexibility. Studies have shown that yoga helps strengthen your upper-body, lower back and abdominal muscles. Nick Cash, a British expat living in Riyadh, started going to yoga classes 30 years ago with his college friends out of curiosity although it was hard work in the beginning. Worried about your high blood pressure? Have no fear yoga is here! It is a well-known fact that yoga slows the heart rate through breathing techniques

that are beneficial for people suffering with heart disease. The ancient practice also helps in lowering your cholesterol level and boosting the immune system. The key is to eat simple and maintain a balanced diet; you will surely reap the full benefits of yoga.
I’ve avoided lots of injuries now that I am flexible and it has made me more in tune with my health and body plus it has encouraged me to be more measured in my attitude. — Nick Cash

Take a breather
Stressed? Unable to get a good night’s sleep? Then yoga is the remedy for you. The concentration level required in yoga will allow your problems to melt away as the many breathing techniques are just the right dose you need for mental relaxation. Tahir Hussain, a yoga instructor in Riyadh, has been teaching for 10 years after taking courses in Pakistan and Canada. He has helped many people with stress related problems through specialized exercises. “I always tell my students once you do a yoga session, you immediately feel very light and comfortable with your body plus have better digestion and sleep patterns.”
You can say goodbye to the insomnia — around eight weeks of regular yoga will help put your sleep woes to rest. The intense breathing and mental exercises help put your mind to complete rest and voila, you sleep like a baby.
Goodbye aches and pains
The best remedy for joint or muscular pains is… take a wild guess? Yes, yoga! Believe it or not, the majority of physiotherapy is taken from yoga techniques. “Many of my students have benefited from warm up exercises and breathing techniques that allowed them to recover from back and shoulder pain.”
said Tahir Hussain.
Sportsmen have taken up yoga as part of their training to cure their injuries, including tennis star Andy Murray and Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs who prolonged his career thanks to yoga. “What men fail to realize is that there are many strenuous techniques in yoga that help in preventing and curing injuries, many sportsmen have adopted yoga as part of their training,”
Newfound focus
Work, balancing your family life, lunch dates with friends, weekly grocery shopping and baqala visits here and there… sometimes it all gets too much. Why can’t you seem to concentrate anymore? The important thing that is lacking is you need to give time to yourself in your routine. “The most important lesson that yoga teaches a student is becoming a more focused person in your daily life – you will see results in a week’s time,” said Tahir Hussain.
We can all relate to when we are juggling with many different tasks but our mind is somewhere else, which disturbs our efficiency and productivity levels. The different postures that you focus on in yoga in turn allows a person to begin to focus on everything in life.
said Nick Cash.

NOW GET REAL, MEN
So what is the mystery surrounding why yoga is seen as unmanly? “I think because most men are into competitive sports and see it as not very macho and think it is only about relaxing but some yoga techniques are very strenuous.” He specifically motivated men to take the time out from their hectic work schedule and join his classes. Tahir Hussain has motivated many men to attend his classes as well as couples but mainly men don’t show up because he thinks: “Women are more serious about their well being and health. Men are too busy with their work and don’t take the time out.” But he thinks there is more keen interest in Riyadh after forming a yoga group of 180 members, including expats and Saudi men. “We had to rent out a space in fitness centers to hold classes which got very expensive. Now I am hoping to find a studio where I can teach more men.” Kudos to all the men out there who give time to take care of themselves!

HIPPIE MUM IN THE CITY
It is well known that additives and colorings in food aimed specifically at children are harmful and increase hyperactivity in children.
Well… not hippie per se, but it’s a pretty catchy title, so I thought, why not? Over the next few issues of Destination, we’re going to look at a holistic approach at parenting and the issues that come with it. First, a bit about yours truly. Well, I’m a British homeschooling mom who moved from the UK to Saudi Arabia a few months ago. I have two young girls; Little Miss
64 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
Chatterbox who just turned 4, and Little Miss Shy, who is almost 3. Like most kids, they are fun, adventurous, loud, stubborn and they drive me crazy, but in the very best way of course! In this issue, I focus on healthy eating, so read on for some tips to improve your child’s eating habits, in order to improve your child’s behavior. The link between food and children’s behavior is a close one.
I’ve found with my children, that when they have food containing colorings or additives, their behavior is very hard to control and they tend to misbehave and argue a lot more. — Hippie Mum
This takes us on to the next big issue that is buzzing around the media – sugar. Studies have shown that sugar is more addictive than tobacco and cocaine. Yet you can find it sold in bags in your local supermarket (sugar that is, not cocaine!).
COURTESY PHOTO/SIMPLYSANDWICHES.NET • HONEY.COM • RE-PLAY.COM
By Hippie Mum
It is found in absolutely everything, from sweets and chocolates, to bread, pastries, pasta sauces and baked beans (which you probably would not expect). It is a huge trigger of the obesity epidemic surrounding KSA, and also contributes negatively to behavioral issues, as well as tooth decay. In fact, there are so many negatives that it really is hard to list a good quality of refined sugar.
and other additives. In our household, we don’t buy sugar or sugar-laden “treats.” Our kids have adapted quickly to our new lifestyle as I try to use alternatives to bake our own treats at home. Having said that, it’s a fine balance in banning sugar, but in also trying to stop my children growing up to crave the “forbidden temptation.” To combat this, we do allow our kids to have a sweet food, be it ice cream or cake, once a week on a Friday. Due to our sugar-free and semi grain-free lifestyle, I make alternative brownies using grated courgettes and coconut flour to replace wheat flour, and use date paste or mashed bananas and honey to replace refined sugar.
There are naturally occurring sugars found in fruit and honey, which also have slightly similar effects, but the consequences of processed, refined sugars are far more damaging.
So, what can you do to decrease your child’s sugar intake?
(In fact, Hippie Dad complains the most, and I know he’s sneaked in a few ice creams from DQ on his way home from work. The DQ tissues in the car were a big giveaway, my friend!)
Most people associate giving chocolates or sweets to children as a sign of their love for them, which is all fine and good, except that sugar can have devastating consequences on children’s health. My advice is to try and be firm and offer alternatives.
From my experience, the hardest thing to deal with when going sugar-free is the reaction from family and friends. My children are treated with things such as stickers, pencils, badges, crayons and outings as a family, rather than sugary snacks; and I encourage family and friends to give my children treats like this too. Make your child’s teacher aware of your approach, and when your children are old enough, allow them to make their own decisions. Little Miss Chatterbox is now 4, so I try to give her some autonomy in making her own decisions. There are many more ways of improving your child’s eating and there are countless books and websites devoted to this topic. HERE ARE DESTINATION’S TOP PICKS:

Firstly, get used to reading food labels. In fact, try to find foods that don’t come in packets or tins. The closer a food is to its natural form, the better. Basically, fresh strawberries actually have some nutritional value as opposed to strawberry jam, which is full of sugar DESTINATIONRYD.COM 65
SPIRITUALITY
HOW TO CHOOSE A PROFESSION
THAT BENEFITS YOU AND THE UMMAH By Talha Qayyum
How exactly do we choose a career from an Islamic perspective and a path that will benefit the Ummah? Below are some pointers that will help us to at least start thinking along the right lines and get the ball rolling in the way of Allah and his creation.
Follow Your Strength
While choosing a career, it is important that we follow our strengths. We should choose a path that is close to our hearts and one that we like. However, it is equally important that it is one that feeds off the strengths blessed upon you by Allah. More often than not, we would perform better at something we naturally enjoy as opposed to something that we have to make an effort to do. The better we perform our job, the better the position we will be in to benefit the Ummah.
Keep it Halal and Seek the Pleasure of Allah
While choosing a career path, always keep in mind that our aim is to gain the pleasure of Allah. Hence, we should choose a path which will enable us to remain steadfast on the teachings of Islam as detailed in the Qur’an or hadith and ones which will not only enable benefit of the Ummah but you as an individual will also gain the reward for the good deeds. Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty.
And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 268]
66 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
Be an Independent Model
Set an example for other Muslims to follow. One of the common examples of this is banking where there were always confusion on whether the type of banking in place was halal or haram. As a result of this, Islamic banking was established, which ensured that the issue of interest along with others was taken care of. Similarly, many Muslim and some non-Muslim countries have come with the idea of having halal hotels where forbidden things like alcohol or non-halal meat is not served. These are examples of how we can choose a path that will enable us to establish businesses based on Islamic concepts.
Convert Your Profession to Ibadah
One of the most important points to remember is that we are rewarded for whatever action we take based on our niyyah or intentions. Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab: The Prophet (pbuh) said,
“The rewards (of deeds) are according to the intention, and everybody will get the reward for what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah’s and His Apostle’s sake, his emigration was for Allah and His Apostle; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits, or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for the thing for what he emigrated for.” [Bukhari].
Ask for Allah’s Help and Guidance
Last but not least, always pray to Allah for his help and guidance in all matters. Always pray salaatul Istikhara before taking any action so as to have the will and permission of Allah in every action you take and inshAllah you will be on the right path.
May Allah guide us to the right path and let us fulfill our responsibilities with dignity, honor and grace. Ameen.

SUPER SEVEN
for 2015 By Tharik Hussain
It’s the dawn of a new year and with that comes the question of where to go in the first quarter of this year? Are you going to fall back on old favorites like London? Or do you fancy somewhere different and unexpected in 2015? Why not join us as we gate crash anniversary celebrations in the heart of Europe? Or embark on a breathtaking walk through "Middle Earth" in Kiwi land? If 2015 is gonna be a year where you’re counting the halalahs then head for our budget destination and explore ancient Indian ruins and secret beaches for the price of a few riyals. If that’s not your cup of tea, then make this the year to go island hopping in the Sulu Sea or maybe it’s time to finally take your significant other on that romantic city break you’ve been promising.
Whatever your plans for 2015, Travel Trends has it covered in our Super Seven destinations, so don’t make a single reservation until you’ve read it – between us, we’ll make 2015 your most memorable year of travel yet.
KARNATAKA, INDIA – Beaches and temples on the cheap
Most of India feels cheap to the average traveler, but it’s the combination of evocative ancient temples and sun-kissed beaches all on a real shoestring that makes Karnataka Travel Trends top budget destination for 2015. The splendidly chaotic capitals of Bangalore and Mysore not only sit surrounded by tropical jungles that are home to tigers, monkeys and Asia’s largest population of elephants, but a four star hotel here will cost only SR 125 a night and a sit-down meal for two at a midrange restaurant is a mere SR 30. Then there are the beaches of Gokarna, where the sand is as soft and silky as those in Goa but without the overzealous parties in the background. For history buffs, a hike into the northern interior will reveal stunning Islamic ruins like the romantic Ibrahim Rouza in the Bijapur Fort.

NEW ZEALAND –
Adventure in Middle Earth
With the final installment of the Hobbit series out this year, New Zealand, the inspiration for Middle Earth is set to top many people’s list of 2015 travel destinations.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA – Top intellectual celebration There’s lots to see and do in this highly celebrated, cultural and intellectual capital of old Europe and getting there becomes a whole lot easier in 2015 with the completion of the Wien Hauptbahnhof station. One of the must-dos is to take a walk down the city’s famous Ringstrasse, built in 1865. It's a bold, grand and scarily expensive facelift that completely altered the look of this marvelous city. This year will see the Ringstrasse become 150 years old and even to celebrate special exhibitions, events and speeches have been lined up.
Around the corner there is an even grander celebration as the oldest University in the German world turns 650 this year. Walking through the hallowed halls of the University of Vienna is like tracking the marvels of western academia for the past six centuries. A guided tour of the faculties, libraries and gothic arcades will lead you through the achievements of at least 15 Nobel Prize winners - who are amongst the alumni - as well as the efforts of one Sigmund Freud. That is all before Travel Trends reminds you this is the city once home to Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Beethoven no less – four of the greatest masters of European classical music!
So as the crowds all head for Hobbiton (the set constructed by director Peter Jackson on Alexander Farm, North Island), Travel Trends suggests something a little more adventurous to really make the most of this stunning country — by doing the Milford Track, New Zealand’s most famous hiking trail. Walk across Tomb Raider style suspension bridges and carefully placed boardwalks as you take in spectacular mountain views inside the stunning Fiordland National Park. The 53.3-km route will take around four days to complete, starting at the head of glorious Lake Te Anau and ending at the nation’s highest waterfall, the cooling mist of Sutherland Falls. As great lovers of the outdoors, the Kiwis have installed outstanding facilities. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 73
LITHUANIA –
Russian beaches and Baroque architecture
This little former Soviet republic is packed full of delightful surprises you just don’t associate with a Russian satellite and 2015 is the perfect year to give it the once over. This year Lithuania becomes the newest member of the Eurozone and finally joins the European family, making travel around the Baltic nation simpler than it’s ever been. Head south with your bucket and spade for the golden, sandy, endless beaches of the Curonian Spit as it reaches for Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, behind which sit Europe’s largest moving sand dunes. From the beach you can head for Baroque in the capital city Vilnius where echoes of Prague abound through the beautiful architecture of one of the largest old towns in northern Europe.
Highest Sand Dunes in Europe, The Curonian Spit
PHILIPPINES – Tropical archipelago
Suddenly the Philippines is back on the global tourist map and with good reason too!
74 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
The Philippines will finally stand on its own two feet after a year-long recovery from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan. Now more good news is on the horizon with rapid progress being made between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, who are active in the country’s south and finally want peace. The country’s potential stability will make for the perfect setting to explore what is easily the finest archipelago in South Asia boasting a phenomenal 7,100 islands. Set in and around the Sulu Sea all of them are like the very definition of idyllic, dreamy Tropical Island. Surrounded by stunning coral reefs off shores of sandy white beaches dotted with thatched huts, the only thing they’re missing is you lounging in a hammock under the palm trees.
RIGA, LATVIA – Top romantic city break Boasting the largest number of Art Nouveau buildings anywhere in the world, Riga has a wonderful combination of old world charm and new world innovation oozing through its streets. Once described as the Paris of the North, Riga is an ideal city break for love struck couples who want to walk hand in hand through the winding cobbled streets of its quaint old town beneath beautiful buildings that whisk you back to a romantic medieval yesteryear – look out for the Vinariuos Civitatis which claims to have been around since 1293!
ROCKY MOUNTAINS, USA – Anniversary bash
in the great outdoors A parade of Ford Model Ts will be among the highlights planned to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, USA.
The park is perfect for gentle treks alongside icy rivers that are overflowing with trout and boast woodland so high up that only the constant oxygen emissions from the forests of Douglas firs keeps the altitude sickness at bay. 2015 will also see art exhibitions, speeches, concerts and other mountainthemed activities in full swing throughout the park to celebrate its birthday. HARAJ PRINCESS SOUKS
AND BARGAIN HUNTING There’s a little corner in Riyadh that you might not know of. It’s a far cry from the skyscrapers along King Fahad Road, the glitzy shopping district of Olaya, or the busy night life of Tahlia Street. But it’s a spot that thrills the bargain hunter in me. I’m talking about Riyadh’s Haraj, a vast expanse of showrooms and flea market along Al Haeer Road, a little past the Old City of Deerah. 76 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2015
Not many people know that Haraj is divided by different sections, each offering a different trade. One section of Haraj is host to a number of showrooms for brand new, made to order or refurbished items like furniture, appliances, kitchen units and upholstery services. The shop prices vary but stay within range, for example, you can buy a new kitchen setup
for SR 500 per meter, complete with delivery and installation. Drive a bit farther and you will find a part of Haraj dedicated for car repairs, parts and used cars sale. Drive farther and you’ll find a garden nursery that sells pots potting soil, small plants and even trees.

The Princess Souk THE LURE
Most people feel queasy about buying used items, especially clothes. But bargain hunters and thrifters alike love the thrill of finding their own little treasure underneath the pile of rubbish. There are stories of lucky ones taking home an old handbag for SR 5 and later finding gold jewelry hidden in its pockets. Or maybe you’ve heard of the near-perfect Louis Vuitton bag that a Saudi Princess outgrew, imagine finding a pre-loved LV for SR 20? Unfortunately, shopkeepers can now recognize LV ved -lo Pre high-end items for SR 20 and they sell it for a higher price.
Despite being dusty and musty, Haraj’s most popular section is the flea market, sometimes called “The Princess Souk," which probably spurred the lore of Princess Hand-me-downs. No one will be able to confirm that but it’s popular because of the dirt cheap prices. I kid you not when I say “dirt cheap” as you’ll find most of the items are piled on dirt floors. Imagine a whole street filled with mounds of old clothes piled high atop each other or rows of used furniture and kitchen setups. Fair warning for germaphobes, this part of Haraj varies in sanitary conditions with some shops better kept than others.
But the flea market is still worth visiting if you’re looking for decent ball gowns, abayas, coats and children’s clothes. Expect prices to be around SR 5 - 20 depending on the item. I once bought a Burberry coat for SR 5, but that was years ago. New in the Kingdom and looking for decent furniture that won’t cost and arm and a leg? You can easily buy the basics with less than a SR 2,000 in your pocket, if you’re up for the challenge. Whether you shop at the flea market or the showrooms, one things is for sure,
It’s cheaper there.

A TRIP TO HISTORIC SAUDI BRAVERY AND STRENGTH: AL MASMAK FORT By Sohila El Saadany
Al Masmak Fort stands tall in Riyadh as a reminder of bravery and strength. It is a representative of Arabian architecture, culture and history all blended together. The castle was built in Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Rasheed's reign in 1865, but came under King Abdulaziz’s rule after the conquering of Riyadh. Al Masmak Fort marks a focal point in the history of unifying the Kingdom.

Al Masmak Fort was used by King Abdulaziz from 1902 to 1938 until he moved his court. The old and intricate style architecture of the building makes it stand out from the rest of the modern buildings of the city. Four high towers climb 18 meters each and encircle the corners of the

structure. They were employed as guarding stations for protection against intruders. The fort and its enclosed buildings are made of hard clay mixed with hay and grass. Those materials in particular The fort also has a 3.65-meterhigh gate made of strong palm tree trunks. At the center of the gate is an opening called Al Khokha, which is only big enough for one person at a time to pass through. This was used as a safety and defense mechanism in the past, as it is designed to allow people to walk through without opening the large door, and to keep enemies from barging in.
Antique items displayed inside the fort
were chosen for their ability to act as insulators in both hot and cold weathers. The ceilings are elevated, and windows for ventilation are also placed really high. The fort contains many rooms, but the main rooms are called the Diwan. They are the sitting rooms made up of traditional Arabic seating. Each Diwan is now an exhibition that shows a wide array of captivating pictures of different eras of the Kingdom. The fort also includes a mosque and a drinking well; it houses a museum that displays antique weaponry, costumes, and farming artifacts. Al Masmak Fort is a place of splendor, it exhumes majestic beauty. The ancient walls tell a story of pride and glory. The fort holds a dear place in Saudi Arabian history, and would be the perfect destination for anyone who marvels at the past of the country.
