#VIVA RIYADH
FROM THE EDITOR
We solemnly swear that we are up to some good. Riyadh has made strides in creating a community when individuals do their part in making a difference, companies are encouraged to be good neighbors and groups come together to create a positive impact. Hence, for this issue, we decided to gather all these folks together to show you just what social responsibility looks like. Start off your reading habit by looking into Nabni Lahom that has women of Saudi Arabia getting active while laying down the blocks for Bait Mawadah, a center for children of divorced women. Explore how you can be a social entrepreneur with Tasamy’s guide to social enterprises. Alternatively, find out how doing good can in fact be good for your business. We’ve also put together some lifestyle articles that will help you find the balance between being socially responsible and still having fun. As Albus Dumbledore said, “It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” The progress of our city lies in the hands of the people who choose everyday to see its potential for greatness and take action. Whether you’re into the arts, business, fashion, entertainment or spreading goodwill; what we do to contribute with our passions and skills will determine the future of our community. So Riyadhis, make your actions count for something worthwhile. You are unwritten pages of this magazine.

THUMBS UP RIYADH JOINS EARTH HOUR
We are happy to report that public and private organizations as well as individuals took part in this year’s earth hour. On March 19, a good portion of the city went dark from 8:30 – 9:30 in the evening. The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh even formed the biggest human candle formation on its estate, while others did their part by turning their lights off for the whole duration.
THUMBS DOWN Lack of Emergency Protocols at Malls
Security personnel should have the proper training to know what to do. Mall operators should have a protocol in place; from knowing the ambulance hotline, having a paging system for any doctors on site in the event of an emergency, should they not have their own medical officers or clinics available.
Riyadh Spring Festival in Full Bloom We loved visiting the bed of flowers during the festival and while it was very crowded, we were able to really appreciate the flower carpets which were the main attraction of the event. 8

When you find a stray animal in need, but you can’t place the animal at home. By Nelly Attar

BUILD AN OUTDOOR HOME
Building your own shelter is relatively simple, and there are a variety of plans for inexpensive cat shelters available online, from either plywood, Styrofoam or storage bins. When constructing a shelter, size is important. It should be large enough to house several felines. Straw is the best material to line the shelter because it allows cats to burrow. Most importantly, ensure it is in the shade and protects the cats/dogs from the heat in summer.
This approach is the only proven humane and effective method to manage feral cat colonies (i.e. prevents overpopulation). TNR involves: trapping, spaying, neutering, vaccinating against rabies, and microchipping cats for identification - and then returning them to their territory. You can run TNR at a reliable local vet (while following through and funding the whole process). Alternatively, you can contact Open Paws shelter for assistance. Open Paws carry out many TNR for feral cats on a weekly basis.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD
YOUR MONEY P E R S O N A L I T Y PART ONE
Debtors
They do not spend much time thinking about money, and generally spend more than they earn. They also often go into debt and don’t consider investing much.
Investors
They are cautiously aware of their money and try to put it to work. Their logic is: invest to cover your expenses and maybe make some extra money. Their actions are generally driven by careful decision-making. In general, people tend to fall under one of these personalities or simply are a hybrid of two.
So, what word of advice do the experts have for each type? We’ll take a look at that next month.
What is money personality? Your money personality is the set of characteristics and traits that govern your behavior toward money and finances. Why is your money personality important? Understanding your money personality will help shape your approach to spending, saving and investing. How can you learn about your money personality? The easiest way is to take a test that is widely available in various lengths and levels of detail online. The test will indicate the type of money personality type that you fall under in reasonable accuracy.

Savers

Shoppers

So we rounded up a number of ideas that Destination’s staff consider to be imperative in making our community a healthier, happier and sustainable place because, really, sustainability is the new cool.
It’s all about what you can do for others and the environment. Caring for people is the cornerstone of Hyatt’s operating philosophy. — Ashwini Kumar, General Manager of Park Hyatt Hotel, Jeddah
Hyatt Thrive Park Hyatt’s hospitality reaches the community. Park Hyatt is a proud member of Hyatt Thrive, a global platform aimed at making a positive impact in local communities through the engagement of Hyatt’s esteemed colleagues. Just like its international partners, Jeddah’s Hyatt Thrive consists of four pillars:
• Environmental Sustainability • Education and Career Readiness • Economic Development and Investment • Health and Wellness
Based on the above pillars, Park Hyatt has been involved in a variety of community activities for the last couple of years such as: • Reduction of environmental impact through the cleaning of public areas around the hotel. • Celebration of Earth Hour. • Clothes and food donations to under-privileged individuals around town.
Being involved in such movements has motivated Park Hyatt and its staff to do more. This year, with April being the month of Hyatt Thrive, Park Hyatt plans on continuing its efforts to help in the making of a socially responsible community by participating in the above campaigns again and adding other initiatives. These include: internal recycling policies that reduce waste sent to landfills and the conservation of natural resources such as timber, water and minerals. In addition to that, Park Hyatt plans to integrate visits to houses of elderly people to spend some time with them, and learn from their experiences, all the while catering to their needs and happiness. The hotel also aims to take it a step further with donations this year by providing blankets, duvets and food to those in need, depending on their individual requirements. DOUBLE THE HAPPINESS WITH LG
A CSR Initiative for Newlyweds.
Being the basic needs of a running household, these home appliances are a major chunk of the expenses a family needs to take on during weddings. LG intends to alleviate this burden.
26 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
“We thought about creating a gesture for the community, but we believed in executing it in an untraditional way with an idea that really helps people in our community in a very productive and direct approach,” points out Salman Al Sabban, the Corporate Marketing Manager of LG Saudi Arabia. Our doors are open for anybody to support them in marriage or in other circumstances. — Salman Al Sabban
Although there was initial hesitation from some brand managers, LG still managed to convince the entire company to support the cause, and it has been gaining success ever since. In just the first week of the launch, there were 250 responses, motivating LG to move further with this innovative concept in the Kingdom.

Every month, around two winners are picked to whom these appliances are delivered on the day of the event. The reason for it to be supplied on the Milkah day is to avoid the family spending on these items before the main wedding event. Therefore, not only is it a valuable notion, but time-effective as well.
LG also hopes to bring other companies, which can add to the needs of every newlywed couple, on board through an entire package that includes furniture, a car, a house and
even travel costs. LG is currently in contact with a variety of potential companies to create a merged campaign. At the moment, this drive is running in Jeddah with hopes to expand to other cities like Riyadh and Dammam in the second half of the year. After evaluating the overall performance of this idea in those cities, Al Sabban hopes LG will be able to expand to other regional cities as well. Web: lg.com/sa LGSaudi LGeSaudi
Registration can be done on the following:

Nahdi has clearly become a leader in its role to eliminate the pharmaceutical stereotype of just being a retail outlet, by communicating the concept of health and wellness in an unconventional and meaningful way, ultimately attracting the youth, and shaping a brighter, healthier future. GOODWILL PROFITING Social Entrepreneurship in KSA
Hey, you. Yeah, you. So what did you do for the world today? Breathing doesn't count.
Well, social entrepreneurs are doing a bit more than that, something along the lines of leaving an impact and making money out of that.
By Jood Al Harthy, Tasamy
Social business, known as social enterprise, is tailored to solve a social problem and make profit so to accomplish long-term sustainability. A solution that profits from its own self, hence it can stand on its own two feet and survive the fierce market.
30 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
It’s not only doing good, it’s doing good smart. It can be quite challenging to start a social enterprise, so individuals can seek guidance in incubators like Tasamy for Social Entrepreneurship. The organization encourages aspiring entrepreneurs with innovative long-term solutions, and polishes them up. Likewise there are other institutions, governmental and nongovernmental, that celebrate social projects in the region.
BE SOCIALLY POSITIVE
Social businesses must focus on serving a social problem and having a positive influence. It’s high time we realize that we hold a responsibility on tackling our social issues, whether it’s by a start-up, developing an app or creating a program. Although it is a cliché, this world does need us.
MASHAL’S PLATE
As an example, Mashal Al Kharashi approached Tasamy through their “Kun” for Food Waste contest. His winning idea is titled “Mashal’s Plate.” The traditional party meal is a big whopping plate of meat and rice, with lots of leftovers. Al Kharashi decided to design a plate that would save up to 30 percent of the rice being thrown away per use. He underwent the program’s 90 days of mentorship and sessions with specialized advisors in the field. He was guided on how to contact investors, discussed his idea with likeminded advisors, and built it through analytical research and brainstorming sessions. This stage is vital for every social entrepreneur because it enhances the project’s innovative qualities and applicability with today’s culture and resources.
MAWAKEB ALAJER
Another challenging aspect is ensuring a long-term quality in your project. Meaning, it must make profit to fund itself. If the idea is the heart of the enterprise, then financial sustainability is the heartbeat! A great example is Mawakeb Alajer. A goodwill project that recently won the King Khalid 2015 Prize under the “Partners of Development Category.” It’s a second-hand shop where people can give away their unwanted items, so that they'll be presented in the store and sold for cheap prices. Afterwards, the profit is divided among the less fortunate.
You are capable of creating a lasting impact through your ideas. Seek guidance from institutions such as Tasamy and other experts. Work on building your idea through research, and studying the current market. Above all, is to never lose heart. Stay committed. Just open your eyes wide and look at the surrounding social problems. Next, open your mind – really open it. Then, with a ton of aspiration and brains, start a business. A social business. To make a change. The Author: Tasamy is a nonprofit organization that focuses on finding sustainable solutions to social problems by encouraging and empowering youth, leaders, private and governmental institutions to achieve social entrepreneurship. NABNI LAHOM It takes a village to raise a child. By Jou Pabalate
For its latest endeavor, Mawaddah Women Charity has partnered up with the social enterprise, the Empowerment Hub, to build a center for children of divorcees in KSA. Since its inception, Mawaddah Women Charity for the reduction of divorce has worked to keep the Saudi family intact. From providing counselling, discussions on public policy to creating programs to assist divorcees and their children; the organization is known for getting into the heart of the issues and creating viable solutions. In its commitment to create a safe environment for children
32 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
of divorcees, Mawaddah has taken upon itself the task of creating Beit Mawaddah, a safe haven for divorcees to drop off, pick up and conduct visitations for their children. Currently, these arrangements were being done in police precincts. As one can imagine, such setup is not ideal and can even be traumatizing to an extent. In order to make this project a reality, Mawaddah teamed up with the Empowerment Hub. The latter is a social change movement on its own. Its mission is to revolutionize what women and youth feed their minds and bodies. They aim to strengthen the awareness of fitness and health in the Kingdom using different
channels, creating active social and educational events and working hand in hand with the government and private sector for a fitter KSA. For Mawaddah, the Empowerment Hub created the Nabni Lahom campaign to raise funds and generate awareness regarding the cause. The campaign, which commenced last fall, consists of various fitness events that not only ignited the charitable spirit of participants but also engage their wellness as individuals. Nabni Lahom also created sponsorship packages for enterprises wanting to support this worthwhile initiative.
One of the favorite events we’ve attended thus far is Rawigi, a yoga retreat at the heart of Bujairy - a feat on its own. The Empowerment Hub managed to bring together the best yogis and fitness centers in the city to create a first of its kind activity. The event was followed up with a Spinathon at Dirab Motor Sports. In the middle of the desert with a marvelous view of cliffs on the horizon and as the breathtaking sun sets, women from all over Riyadh rode in support of the cause. As part of the Nabni Lahom campaign, the Empowerment Hub in partnership with Wild Guanabana has organized the Kili4Mawaddah, a journey to
the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The climb was done by inspiring individuals not only from Saudi Arabia but also the entire region. The climbers are all self-funded and any donations and proceeds the climb will generate goes to Beit Mawaddah.
From the dedication and passion of the women behind Mawaddah, the Empowerment Hub, volunteers and every person in the community will rise a safe sanctuary for children. This only goes to show that if we took the time to support what’s good in the city, then in one way or another, we can indeed be part of the difference. Web: theempowermenthub.com/nabnilahom

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! By Johara Almogbel
What got you started?
At the age of 16 I felt extremely lost and I had no interests at all so I started a self-discovery process in which I experimented with various activities. Painting happened to be one of the activities that I experimented with and once I started to get into it and explore it I immediately fell in love and haven’t stopped painting since then.
Why do you art?
To me art isn’t just about creativity and creation; it is in fact a way of living. I paint to connect with my true self, I paint to stay in touch with my emotions, and I paint to evolve and grow spiritually. Once I started expressing myself through art, a form of inner peace started to unravel. I became acceptant of who I am as a person and that is why art has become my way of living.
NAME:
Ftoon AlThaedi AGE: 20 OCCUPATION:
ent, Arts and design stud full time artist. INTING MEDIUM: OIL PA AND DRAWING.
WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS?
Alyssa Monks, Charmaine Olivia, Van Gogh, Frida Khalo
FAVORITE PIECE OF ARTWORK BY SOMEONE ELSE. COURTESY PHOTO
“Almond Blossom, 1890” by Van Gogh.
34 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning?
My work is mostly based on inspiration from everyday life. I find things that attract my attention and through them I start to develop an idea. I usually get inspired by details, for example: close ups of lips, eyebrows, lashes, eyes, noses. I find details of the human body mesmerizing and absolutely inspiring.
What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?
I believe that my piece “Honey Girl 2014” is the best thing I’ve ever created. It was an eye-opener and a very challenging piece that made me learn a lot of new techniques that later on helped me advance my work. Other than the fact that due to how large and detailed the piece was I constantly felt like I was being rebellious and trying something new and different which made the painting process joyful.
What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed?
The art scene in Riyadh has been growing recently, which is great. I’m starting to see a lot of people becoming more involved with art and connecting with other artists as well. However, there is a specific pattern that most upcoming artists are following to become popular which is something that I would love to see change. After all, creating art isn’t about being popular but more about being successful.

Since a visit to the beach is out of reach, head out to these pools to get your summer cool. By Jou Pabalate
Manahil Women’s Center Type: Indoor lap pool
Diplomatic Quarter Sports Complex
For: Women and children
Type: Wave pool
A lot of those who grew up in Riyadh learned how to swim at Manahil’s pool. While the center is known for its swimming classes, you can actually go in for a dip at SR 50 per day. There’s also the option of taking water classes if doing laps on your own is not your thing. Location: Diplomatic Quarters

An international franchise, Aquatots is a swimming school for children that has just opened in Riyadh this month. They’re noteworthy since they’re the first school to teach babies as young as 6-months (a first, it seems from what we’ve heard in the city). Location: King Fahad Rd. aquatots_ksa
For: Families
Admittedly, there’s not a lot of water parks in the city and so, while Al Yamamah offers the bare basics, it’s an interesting option for families wanting to have a weekend barbecue/ gathering and don’t have their own istrahas (villas). Women won’t get to swim in the park itself but there are chalets you can rent out that are fitted with small pools. Location: Thumama District
Tips to Remember
We didn’t include the places that are usually exclusive for members or are selective of guests. And for bachelors, you’ve got it so much easier so please help yourself and Google “gyms or hotels with swimming pools.” Unless otherwise stated, it’s usually for guys only.

Alessandro’s Gucci
The man who changed the brand. By Felwa Alhudaithy
Alessandro Michele has been working for Gucci since 2002. But none of us heard about him until January of last year, when he got appointed as the new creative director of Gucci, after Frida Giannini’s exit from the Italian brand. This was the best decision the Italian fashion house has ever made! From then on, Michele created a different Gucci, full of femininity and delicate details, florals, loads of accessories, statement shoes and bags that women went crazy for, therefore establishing a completely different brand identity within 12 months and 42 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
two seasons. There is not a single fashion magazine that doesn’t write about Gucci’s new approach to fashion. From his campaigns with unknown models in New York’s subway, to his campaign films, he simply reinvented the Gucci woman as a playful, vintage inspired, and down to earth spirit; basically the welltraveled girl next door. When most people think of Gucci, they think of the Tom Ford era of Gucci — slinky dresses with plunging necklines, unforgettable ads, and those immaculate cuts. Michele’s Gucci couldn’t be more different! The talented
designer brought out a familiar Gucci soul- albeit a new revamped version of it. There are the well-known house signatures like the classic
What’s new in the Gucci world you might ask? A blessed fashion show, LITERALLY! Gucci’s Cruise collection will be held at London’s most iconic church, Westminster Abbey, in June. What can we expect? The unexpected of course! It’s Michele’s world and we’re living in it.

But combined with mink coats, androgynous suits, wallpaper florals, tilted berets and geeky glasses; those simple trinkets seem to have evoked characters from a Wes Anderson film and stolen the hearts of fashion editors worldwide. AS THE OLD ADAGE GOES, WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY. Each season, the pressure on Michele will be to continue the momentum he's brought to the runway and to retain the consumer’s attention. So the question is: can his ‘new old’ be the ticket to ultimate success?
His spring collection was as colorful and dreamy as ever; we saw Lurex knits, natty box pleated skirt suits, silky bomber jackets, corsages, ladybird stamped ties and futuristic Mary Janes. It was a mix of quirky and immaculately executed granny clothing… The kind you’d want to own! He put all the models in glasses, piled on the jewelry as he himself wears, and played a wellplayed fur game, not to mention those to die for mules. In short, Michele awakened the house of Gucci out of its fashion slumber and thrust it back into fashion conversation.

BURJ AL HAMAM BISTRO
A modern twist to Riyadh’s favorite Lebanese resto.
Serving authentic dishes since its inception in 1979, Burj Al Hamam is considered to be the part of every Riyadhi’s food nostalgia. Located at the burgeoning Hitteen District, Burj Al Hamam Bistro brings together the much love classics of its older sibling, served in a contemporary chic abode. The décor consists of traditional Lebanese architectural touches—in the form of arched windows traditionally found in old houses and hole-in-thewall chairs reminiscent of those found on the buzzling streets of Beirut.
We can say that you will come for the food and stay for the experience at the Burj Al Hamam Bistro. Its menu has been carefully crafted to appeal to both nostalgic tastebuds and for those seeking out classic dishes with a twist.
The tabbouleh is not to be missed, the zest of the salad with the texture and added flavor of walnuts and raisins, adds a new dimension to this local favorite. Don’t forget to match it with the cold mezze staples - the raw beef kebbeh is one of the best we’ve tried thus far in the city. The lamb with oriental rice is succulent and bursting with flavor. LUNCH IS ON US Food that feeds the soul. By Johara Almogbel
Bunyan is one of our favorite charities, if only because their work revolves around empowering women in need in the best way possible. So when we heard their cooking project, Bunyan Chefs, was offering a daily lunch program we figured what better food to try out for our Social Responsibility issue?
S U N D A Y Appetizer: Kebbah Salad: Cauliflower Salad Side Dish: Potato Wedges Main Meal: Spaghetti Bolognese Dessert: Kunafah
M O N D A Y
The program is called Ghadakum Alayna (Your Lunch is On Us) and it’s geared towards busy people who don’t have time to cook but would still like to eat a homemade meal, and the profits go to the women employed in Bunyan Chefs. We tried it out for a week, and here’s what we thought!

TASTE
Overall, the food was clean and tasted like our grandmothers made them, which is a HUGE plus. It was varied, too, and they were generous with the quantities. There was a large number of carbs, but since this wasn’t meant to be a weight loss system we were absolutely fine with it.

Don’t Stress Out
An herbal tea a day keeps this silent killer away. "Stress is not a state of mind... it's measurable and dangerous, and humans can't seem to find their off-switch." These words of warning come from renowned author and awardwinning neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky in the documentary “Stress: Portrait of a Killer.”

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
Let’s talk about one of the most dangerous of these silent killers: STRESS Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can give you a jump on managing them. You may think illness is to be blamed for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or even decreased productivity at work, when really stress could be behind it all. Stress can cause many negative behaviors, including a change in eating habits, anger outbursts, smoking and social withdrawal. Left unchecked, stress contributes to many health problems, from high blood pressure and heart disease to obesity and diabetes.
For many of us, our imbalanced lifestyle, inadequate rest, unhealthy eating habits and zero proper physical activity has placed us in the sights of many silent killers that are ready to trigger at any moment. It is imperative that we identify problems very early on and take measures to prevent them from getting worse. It is all the more important to be proactive and not let these issues occur at all.
In order to combat stress, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. While they don’t take the place of strong social support, herbs are a wonderful, natural way to help the body and mind to cope with stress. Whether your stress shows up as muscle tension, scattered thoughts, upset digestion or a racing heartbeat, there are traditional herbal remedies to soothe these reactions. Some of the following herbal teas taken after dinner can manage your stress and bring dramatic change in your life.
This humble, apple-scented flower is traditionally taken as a tea after dinner because it’s a nervine that supports digestion. Chamomile has been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory—reducing “inflamed” thoughts as well as inflammation in the body.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) This is called “the gladdening herb” for its ability to uplift and calm at the same time, both as a tea and through its lovely scent. Traditionally, it’s been used to decrease anxiety and ease sadness.
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) This makes the sun shine a little brighter as an effective tool for lifting depression. It’s been found useful in mild to moderate depression and traditionally was used to relieve anxiety and lift sadness.

World Health Day Beating Diabetes What can you do to be part of the change? Since 1950, the UN has marked April 7 of every year to be World Health Day. It’s a day to commemorate and celebrate the founding of the WHO and bring to attention major health related issues on a global scale. This year’s concept is to combat diabetes, a life-long disease that affects the way your body handles glucose in your blood with alarming repercussions. There are two main forms of diabetes: type one and type two, both somewhat genetically linked but type two comprises 90 percent of people with diabetes worldwide.
Many believed that type one is mostly common in children and adolescents but with all the lifestyle changes the world is going through, more and more children and young adults are being diagnosed with type two than ever before. This is a major concern for health care providers and according to the IDF in the MENA region, it’s been recorded that there were 3.4 million cases of diabetes in Saudi Arabia as of 2015.

That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [At Tawbah 9:36]

wrong with that. Similarly, one who offers voluntary fasts, simply out of his usual habit without singling this month or time of year is permissible.
Innovations committed by those who exaggerate the holiness of this month are as follows: 1 Celebrating Prophet’s Night Journey on the 27th (Isra’ and Mi’raaj). 2 Performing Salaat Al Raghaaib. 3 Observing Voluntary Fast specifically in this month. 4 Visiting Graves. 5 Singling this month for frequently performing Umrah.
The aforementioned acts are innovations; as they haven’t been properly authenticated. Without a doubt fasting and Umrah are good deeds, but bid‘ah begins when we single out a specific date, time or month for a deed, as in this case Rajab is singled out for carrying out specific deeds. If a person performs Umrah during Rajab without believing that there is any special virtue in that, then there is nothing

So, dear friends, let’s prepare ourselves for this month, let’s purify our intentions, abstain from transgression, desist from committing bid’ah, spread the message and enrich our and others’ knowledge with regards to this month. Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

2. Having Taqwa
Allah says, “Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving, He will send rain to you in abundance, increase you in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” (71:10-12)
Allah says, “Whosoever fears Allah, keeps his duty to Him, He will make for him to get out from every difficulty and will provide for him from (sources) he could never imagine.” (65:2-3) Allah will open doors, which you never knew even existed.
3. Raise in the Ranks
4. Ties of Kinship
5. Giving Charity
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “If you were to rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out early in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.” (Tirmithi)
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “He who desires that he be granted more rizq and his life be prolonged should maintain good ties with his kinship.” (Bukhari and Muslim) This brings the double benefit of increased sustenance as well as longer life.
Allah says, “Whatsoever you spend of anything for Allah, he will replace it. He is the best of those who grant sustenance.” (34:39) Spend charity for Allah and be blessed in what remains and your rewards in the Hereafter will be multiplied.
6. Du‘aa’ (Supplication) The Prophet (PBUH) used to say, when he said the salaam at the end of Fajr prayer: “Allaahumma inni as’ aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘ilman naafi’an, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask you for good provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds).” (Saheeh Ibn Maajah) Let’s get started following these tips and watch as the provision rains from Allah above.
Allah is Al Razzaq, The Provider, who gives to whom He wills. Our blessings are a test and as such, we must appreciate and thank Allah whether we have little or a lot. I ask Allah to bless you, and to open your doors for you.

Makkah Museum
Charting the Glorious History of Makkah An insight into Makkah through the ages. By Mohammed Mirza
Located on the road that leads to the Ayesha Mosque in Makkah, this former palace has been converted into a museum that goes by the name of Makkah Museum for Antiquities and Heritage. We stood there in front of the stark white structure that didn’t appear ostentatious wondering if it was open for visitors. We couldn’t see anyone going on inside, although it was located on a busy road. The only thing that made the structure look imposing was its massive size and the palm trees that lined its courtyard. But this was nothing compared to the opulence of its interiors.
84 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2016
The first hall we entered displayed a general history of various regions across the Kingdom and highlighted some of the major archaeological finds from each. The hall adjacent to that had stone tools and arrowheads made from chiseled rock by the earliest inhabitants of the region. There were various pottery items on display in the same hall as well.
the interior; regal in every sense of the word. The light was shimmering down the glass panels lighting up the main corridor gracefully.
Formerly known as the Zaher Palace, the construction on the building began in 1946 on the orders of King Abdulaziz; it finished seven years later in 1952. The palace was initially used as royal guesthouse but later on it was converted into a school. After its tenure as a school it was restored and converted into a museum.
The museum is divided into a number of rooms or halls where the flow of visitors is designed in such a way that a visitor starts the tour by witnessing the oldest artifacts found in the Makkah region first and literally goes era after era to the most recent past right at the end.
While moving around the hall what I found most beneficial was the fact that it had bilingual informative posters and signage. Museums in the country desperately need such signage and posters to educate visitors on what they are seeing and the history behind it. Walking down wide palatial corridors, I was overwhelmed by the grandeur of the building. The polished marble floors, high ceiling, decorated glass panels and a royal staircase at the end of the hall; the palace is a masterpiece from the inside. As we climbed the grandiose stairs with a few moments of being overwhelmed to take in all the regality that surrounded us, we saw old copies of the Qur’an in front of us. Here as well there wasn’t a single person.
The lone security guard showed us the way up the driveway towards the burgundy colored main door. We opened it and were flabbergasted by DESTINATIONKSA.COM 85
We traversed room after room and found the artifacts on the upper floor to be from a fairly recent past of Makkah. Noticeable halls include the currency hall that displays several currencies dating back to the successive Islamic periods and the Saudi state hall that tells the story of the formation of the Kingdom. Also not to miss out on is the hall of the development of the grand mosque. Here visitors are educated on the different phases of development that have been undertaken at the grand mosque in Makkah under successive rulers. But what was slightly sad to see was that apart from us there were only two other visitors, despite it being one of the best museums in the region. Overall, the museum is impressive but what I personally felt awestruck with was the structure in which

On March 4, 1838, the drilling reached a depth of 1,440 meters at Dammam Well No. 7. It started to pump out 1,585 barrels of oil a day. Then in October 1938, Saudi Arabia officially declared the discovery of oil in commercial quantities. It was due to the unearthing the large quantities of oil at Dammam Well No.7, that there was a renewed faith in the prospects of the vast oil deposits in the Kingdom. In 1982, after continuing to produce oil for close to 45 years, Dammam Well No.7 was taken out of production. It produced around 32 million barrels of oil in its long production history.
