FROM THE EDITOR
We meet again, dear readers. February is the month that most people abandon their new year’s resolutions only to pick them up the next year. But fear not Sharqawis! Our new year’s resolution to bring you the best stories we can find is still going strong. For this year’s Art Issue, we’ve brought you some inspiring stories. Three artists in one family worked together to give Sharqiya one of its most unique galleries. Check out the story behind Milleflouri Gallery in our Arts section. Aspiring and established artists, we’ve put together a little treat for you in our special feature section. A must-have guide to the local art scene, all wrapped up in a nice bow for you. Five of Sharqiya’s most prominent artists talk to us about the slight differences in the art community of our main cities. Meet Najla Abdullah, Raneen Bukhari, Taghreed Al Baghshi, Abduladiem Al Dhamen and Hasan Mdawi. Art is beautiful but so is food. The most exciting part of our February issue is our Seafood Special. First, meet Hasan Binali, the hospitable owner of Darin Restaurant. Then turn the page for our review of some of the best seafood restaurants in the city. Our pages are glossy and therefore somewhat droolproof, so feel free to enjoy.

STRONGER TOGETHER A tale about three brave boys and one amazing association, Sanad. By Lujain Al Heraiqi
Back in 2011, 15-year-old Jasem Al Obaid was planning a summer trip with his friends to Abha. Despite feeling sick, he tried hiding it so he could still go, but his dad found out and took him to the nearest clinic. This was when they first diagnosed him with leukemia. He began his treatment in King Fahad Specialist Hospital, being the only teenage boy there. A year later, the doctors received a new patient that was similar in age to Al Obaid and were grateful to introduce them to each other. He and Abdulrahman Al Shamrani easily found solace and camaraderie in each other, and quickly became best friends. Still, doctors would often tell them not to spend time together because their immunities were weak and any bacteria that one child got would quickly spread to the other. 16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
Abdulrahman Al Shamrani
The duo would say their goodbyes every night, “I will miss you; we will never see each other again.” And the next morning would come with them back together.

Al Shamrani left the hospital for a period of time, but by then they had befriended their third musketeer. Up until then, Abdulaziz Al Atallah had spent three whole years unaware of his cancer diagnosis. One day, one of the boys was joking, “It’s funny that everyone in this room is cancerous.” Al Atallah’s innocent smiles faded into a fearful jaw drop, “But, I’m not cancerous.” They asked him, “Don’t you get chemo?” He nodded and they said, “You have your answer.” It was one of the toughest things to learn, but he was grateful to have these new friends to get through it.

Sanad Children’s Cancer Support Association had just begun their “Make a Wish Foundation” around the time that Al Shamrani came back to the hospital. Al Obaid asked for a PlayStation 3, but he confronted him: “Are you serious? Why’d you ask for something cheap? That’s stupid. Ask for an iPad. It’s more expensive, then sell it and buy as many PS3s as you like.” They all changed their wishes and, after receiving their gifts, Sanad asked, “How do you like your iPads?” Al Shamrani smirked and hid the fact that he actually sold his, but Al Atallah almost immediately blurted, “HE SOLD IT!” in the most Qassimi accent ever. It became an instant inside joke that is remembered with laughter to this day. 18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017

An event organized by the founders of Matha8, Sanad Village, was all fun and games at the Prince Saud bin Nayef Park back in February 2016.
Through the years of adventures, parties, hardship and perseverance, all three recovered from that which had first brought them together. They were then contacted by Sanad volunteer Sarah Al Sughaiyer and offered the idea of bringing joy to other children that were going through what they had survived. Without a second thought, they proudly joined and considered it the best decision they’d ever made. They felt like they were doing something that used to make their child selves happy. Sanad had brought joy to their lives in the hospital with their visits so they loved being a part of it.
What is Sanad? A group of women had a singular mission in mind: compassion. Each one of these women had someone in their life that suffered with cancer, and they wanted to do something together to help. Thus, Sanad came into being. They started simply, by making visits to patients, having activities and reading stories to the children. After that, they opened their office in Khobar and established an agreement with King Fahad Specialist Hospital to take care of the cancer patients in the pediatric section. Sanad’s services include providing furnished apartments for patients and their fathers during chemotherapy visits, transportation for hospital trips, providing SR 1,000 each month for the child and the “My Room” campaign that refurnishes children’s bedrooms with their favorite home decorations. Nouf Al Dossary, Sanad’s public relations coordinator, emphasized the programs that they offer to families of children with cancer. This includes talks and presentations for mothers, teaching them how to cope with the diagnosis and how to best provide a supportive environment for their child. Web: sanad.org.sa

ADDRESS YOU NEED Interviewing Inwan.com founder, Faisal Al Harbi. By Arwa Al Mousa
Faisal Al Harbi
Inwan.com is a commercial network that provides a robust directory of all commercial venues in the region, including location, contact info, exclusive deals, social media and website addresses. Inwan already boasts more than 100,000 entries and will continue growing thanks to our “open collaboration” model which allows anyone to contribute information that we later verify. 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017

Tell us about Inwan.com
What inspired you to start Inwan? I’ve always had a passion for giving back to my community. When I came back to Saudi after graduating in 2006, I tried to search online for opportunities and was disappointed by the lack of information available, including basic things like working hours and locations of businesses. Sometimes the information would be outdated or flat-out wrong. So, seeing a need, I created Inwan to provide a legitimate and collaborative website that would serve everyone reliable information.
What's your vision for Inwan? We aim to become the best online directory in Saudi Arabia and the Arab World by providing a complete, legit and up-to-date database for people to use and contribute to when they want to search for anything (e.g. universities, shops, malls, restaurants, companies, etc).
We want people to think about Inwan.com the minute they need to search for anything. And while there are other services similar to ours, we feel that if we joined forces and collaborated together instead of competed, we could grow in strength and succeed together.
dedicated to providing the best service we could. After consulting the right developers, I designed the business plan and hired a special company to develop the website. My friends supported greatly with their many contributions, especially since they came from different fields.
Do you think that getting a degree before starting a business is necessary?
Whether it was Ibrahim who took care of marketing, or Hashim, with his strong business sense that helped us with business development consultations. Everyone came together to make what we have today.
Never let opportunity pass you by just because you think you don’t have enough formal knowledge. Take the chance and continue learning and developing. Knowledge is found everywhere; you only need to know where to look. University degrees alone won’t make you succeed in life, but experience and hard work will
How was the inception and journey of making the site? This site is the outcome of extensive research and design made by experts and engineers over the course of six years,

S H A R Q I YA’ S ART SCENE Artists from every corner of Sharqiya. By Hajer Al Alwan
KHOBAR
What’s the most important thing for the work of an artist? To practice and keep creating. Even if the artist is not intending to publish their work, it is important for them to continue creating and practicing whatever they do.
22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
What inspires your art the most? I like seeing artists who push their boundaries, it’s really inspiring to me. Some artists work digitally and print their art, and that’s fine. I really love to see artists who get creative and invest and experiment with new technologies like 3D printing, who work their muscles around a new technique, or just mix both digital and manual techniques.
STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF
I’m a freelance art curator and art consultant. I graduated in 2008 and worked with several companies before finally deciding that I wanted to work with art. In 2012 I started working in Desert Designs – a company my parents started 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve been curating art workshops and helping artists work with different mediums.
What do you think of art in Khobar? There is lots of development in Khobar. It is not like it used to be before. Artists here get way more support than they used to, and it makes me happy to see this happening.
Where do you see art in Sharqiya going? I know many artists from all cities in Shariqya including Jubail and Al Ahsa, and it’s nice to see how they’re working hard to show their work and make things better and easier for the upcoming generations of artists. Imaginative artwork by Momad.
neenoism
Who is the artist? I don’t practice art as a fine artist does, but I also think that every one of us has an artist inside of them. I don’t believe in separating artists and other people because everyone can be creative in their own way. I’ve seen artists who are business-minded and others who are just creating and don’t think practically about their work.
Art from The Wall of Raneen.
What is your earliest memory of art? The image of my mother painting in our house always comes back to mind. How she used to teach me how to draw and use colors. We did a lot of arts and crafts together when I was a child. DESTINATIONKSA.COM
23
DAMMAM
What inspires you the most? Music is always a huge inspiration for me. I learn about it all the time and it’s something that makes me happy just as much as painting. 24 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
What is the thing that catches your eye in any piece of art? Some may find the message or concept behind a piece interesting, but I personally appreciate the techniques used to make it. It’s fascinating learning the approach and technique an artist uses to deliver their message.
What do you think of the art movement in Sharqiya in general? Many of the artists in Saudi Arabia come from Sharqiya, especially Qatif. The art community in Sharqiya is still in its early days unlike Riyadh or Jeddah where it’s more spread and well acknowledged.
STAFF PHOTO/HAJER AL ALWAN
My interest in pop art started 10 years ago, introducing me to the greater world of art along the way. I attended an art residency in Dubai, and when I came back I started a small art business called Huna Art with Raneen Bukhari. Now we’re the official social representative for the Arts and Culture Association in Saudi. I give speeches and lectures about art regularly and I’m a professional art trainer.
Where do you draw your style from? My work is deeply influenced by fashion and fashion shows. There are certain trends and styles that are very relatable to the kind of art I do.
How does an artist’s outlook to life differ from anyone else’s? I feel like art is inside all of us, but an artist is the person who can deliver it to others. Everyone appreciates beauty. A scene of nature is something that anyone can fall in love with, and to me that’s a form of art. So if anyone can appreciate nature, why can’t they also see the beauty behind art? najlabdullah
Where do you think art in Dammam is going? It is pretty advanced. Dammam is full of artists, including film directors, actors and fine artists, and there are a lot of art studios here. Many art movements started here such as Seen TV channel.
When was your first encounter with art as a child? In 4th grade, my teacher noticed my eye for art and she asked me to draw the best drawing I could draw. Later, she came back to me and told me that my drawing won 2nd place in an art competition for Saudi Aramco. Ever since then, I started taking art more seriously. 25 DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25
JUBAIL
I’m a fine artist. Originally from Asir region, I was born and raised in one of the villages in Namas Governorate. I moved to Riyadh to finish my bachelor’s degree in art education at King Saud University. Currently I’m working at the Royal Commission in Jubail. I have participated in multiple collective galleries inside and outside the Kingdom.
What is your earliest memory of painting? I used to be obsessed with the pictures and portraits I found in my older brothers’ school books, and I tried to redraw them. 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
What inspires your art the most? Ever since I was a boy, I’d always been inspired by nature. My work reflects the vernacular architecture, urban setting, and social life of the villages in Namas.
How would you describe your work? My work is not influenced by modern schools of art. It does not have an abstract nature to it, and it’s a mere projection of my attachment to the nature of the villages I grew up in. I love this about my paintings because in a way, they too, deliver a message.
Most people do not know about the diversity of terrain in Saudi. When having galleries in foreign countries, I get asked a lot whether my paintings reflect the nature of an area here. The main element in my paintings is human life. It is important to me that anyone who looks at my paintings can see the interaction between humans and the environment they live in.
How would you describe an artistic outlook to life? Many people in our society do not give art its true value and overlook the fact that art has had a role in building solid civilizations since the beginning of time. The artist is the one who reflects the culture and civilization of his to the rest of world, and any artist should be aware of this role.
What are your thoughts about development for artists and art enthusiasts in Jubail? I don’t think it’s that active, since it’s a bit isolated from the more active centers such as Dammam and Khobar where you can find many art platforms and organizations.
Where do you see the art movement in Sharqiya going? The Eastern Province is the third most active when it comes to arts movement. I’m full of hope that it’s moving forward as we see the opening of the King Abddulaziz Center for World Culture. DESTINATIONKSA.COM
27
Q AT I F
I started during my days at King Saud University in Riyadh. In 1982, I displayed my paintings for the first time in a collective exhibition and I won 2nd place, which was a major boost for me. Three years later, I had my second personal gallery in the public library of the university, kicking off many more opportunities in and out of the country.
How would you describe an artistic outlook to life? If there isn’t a mission or a message that the artist wants to communicate, then there’s no value in the art they make. It’s just aesthetics.
28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
When did you start developing your own personal style? In 1988, I started experimenting with using decorative burlap sack material as elements within my paintings. It gave them their identity because I was one of first people who used it. I also incorporated and recycled pieces of ceramic and mud that were used in buildings from Tarot Island.
What inspires you? The state of being in love and seeing love around is what inspires me the most. I feel inspired by positivity and like to project this in my paintings.
What are your thoughts about the art movement in Qatif? The art movement is limited to certain names and figures. The number of artists is considerable, but the ones that survive to the top are quite few.
Where do you see the art movement in Sharqiya going? I admire how there’s a lot of development in the area, but having no platform to exhibit has led many aspiring artists to give up or seek somewhere else. It’s true that we use malls and public spaces as galleries, but this turns the audience into general public instead of a closed circle of art enthusiasts. abduladeim
When did you develop your appreciation for art? My teacher in 4th grade noticed my interest in art and took every opportunity to take me to the arts and crafts room. I sculpted a map on plaster, and it was hung in the hall. Years later, I came back to teach at the same school and found the map right where I left it.
Aside from being a painter, you’re also a writer? In my college days, I used to write in the university’s weekly newsletter, leading to writing for other newspapers and culminating with publishing my first book after graduation. This year I will be publishing my 12th book.

AL AHSA
I recently got my master’s degree in methodologies and techniques in teaching arts. I’ve had around 15 personal galleries and many other collective galleries. I think that life is about doing what we are most passionate about because without a dream, a human cannot exist.
What is your earliest memory of painting? I was obsessed with colors as child. I used to experiment with colors and – a big thank you to my parents – they never minded the mess I made. As I grew older, my art frenzy never lulled. However, there weren’t 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
many ways to learn art in the area and it felt like being in a creative desert. During summer vacations in Syria, I used those opportunities to take courses at Damascus University and other places. Soon after, I took off with my own style.
What inspires your art the most? It’s never one thing. There’s always a philosophy behind every piece I did, a message and a question: “Why?” I’ve always been obsessed with feminism, and that’s what I started with. Later on, my style started to advance towards the idea of human existence and experimenting with that concept.
How would you describe your work? My art speaks for me and for the causes of the society we live in, such as the issues of women driving, women’s femininity and a woman’s personal search for herself. My paintings are genuine, and it’s nice to see women relating to my paintings when they look at them. I consider this the biggest I achievement I made.
Is there an art community in Al Ahsa? There’s definitely a seed for aspiring artists in the area, but there’s still so much work to be done. The road is not smooth. We still need authorized art institutions and centers to provide academic and professional training. tagreedbagshi
My paintings are intended to provoke the audience. Every gallery started with a set of questions that I tried to communicate through my paintings.
What have you been up to lately? I finished and exhibited my latest collection in Paris, where I spent the most inspiring months of my life. At one point, international artists and I were invited to exhibit our work in Cité Internationale des Arts (the International City of Art). Two months later, I wanted to share my experience, so I participated in a gallery called “Her” in Kuwait to represent Saudi. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Many comedy stars were at the show including Ibrahim Khairallah and Moayad Al Nafai along other stars from outside Saudi Arabia such as Wadah Sewar. Aside from the good laugh we had, we loved the DJ and the photo booth they had outside.

KEEPING IT IN THE
FAMILY
Meet the minds behind Millefiori Gallery. By Hajer Al Alwan
Nouf
A family business of four women, driven by pure talent and passion for art, Hala Al Khudairy and her two daughters Zainab and Nouf divide their time to manage the gallery. Having full-time careers has not stopped the Khudairy women and their interior designer cousin Dhuha from doing what they love.
The Story Behind the Name The name is inspired by the popular Italian glasswork technique which means (mille) million and (fiori) flowers.
The Gallery’s Beginning
Precision is key when working with glass and ceramic — Zainab Al Khudairy
34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
Their mother was one of the founders of a self-directed art group in Saudi Aramco. After retirement, she decided to take things to the next level and start their own gallery. Nouf makes jewelry, glass paintings and funky glass musical instruments as pendants; Zainab paints glass cups and ceramic; Hala paints eggs and makes glass rugs; while Dhuha paints Iraqi culture-inspired pieces on canvas.
When It Began Nouf: It all started with my love
STAFF PHOTO/HAJER ALALWAN
Zainab
“We saw art all around us as children,” said Zainab. “My first time noticing my mom making art was when she painted Mickey and Minnie on a canvas for me. I was truly delighted.”
of music. I first started playing the piano when I was 11. In college my friends and I formed a music band and I made a glasswork guitar for each one of them as a gift. Zainab: The first memory
I have of making art is when I was around 14. It was Nouf’s birthday and I painted Disney characters on t-shirts and cards as a gift for all of the house members.
Source of Inspiration Nouf: Music plays a huge
part in my inspiration, but also the nature of my work as a pediatrician is very stressful, so working with fused glass and putting my heart into it gives me great relief. Sometimes we also make art for good causes, such as our last Pink Art
campaign where we made pink pieces for Zahra Breast Cancer Association.
Favorite Type of Art
Zainab: The urge to make
something comes to me in waves. Sometimes I’m in the mood to do silk painting, or I feel like doing glass or ceramic painting. Other times I’m not in the mood to make anything at all.
Biggest Challenge Nouf: I feel like people don’t appreciate the value of the originality in each piece. It’s difficult to make people understand that the pieces we make don’t just require effort, but also a lot of time, expensive tools and dedication. Mob: +966-503099204 Web: the3millefioris.com

ONCE UPON A TIME IN KHOBAR Local storytelling program shapes future storytellers. By Lina Al Faris
“Mom, is this heaven?” Asked a child visiting Kan Yama for the first time, instantly making the question a cherished moment that the team remembers and laughs about often.
Today, Kan Yama has hundreds of children and many volunteers attending every Tuesday with a strong enthusiasm for the power of stories. It has expanded to 16 different cities in Saudi Arabia, even expanding internationally with sessions held in Jordan and Los Angeles, California. The main goal is for the children to have fun, so aside from reading and storytelling, they hold arts and crafts activities, games, singing and so much more. 36 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
Kan Yama begins each school semester with a new theme. The volunteers break up into teams to create the stories and plan the activities. The writing volunteers start writing the story for each session, while designers would design related illustrations for the drawing activities. The main characters of all the stories are Tamim
and Raneem. Apart from the writing and illustrating, other team members plan out physical activities and entertainment that is always related to the main theme of that semester. The theme of this season, for example, was to expose the children to different careers. One of the most joyful experiences

Esraa Alghunaim and Abdullah Alhawas were always awed by the power of knowledge and how reading is essential for child development. So, in 2008 they decided to start hosting a weekly storytelling session for children in a Khobar café.

It was moving, rewarding and a whole lot of fun. Other collaborations have included working with SciTech and Sanad Cancer Support Association. On the Red Carpet
THAWB ALORS A one-on-one with the stars. The cast and crew of the film Thawb Alors (The Wedding Dress) proudly walked the red carpet at the 14th Dubai International Film Festival in December. The film is about a seamstress who is pressured by her

daughter to make her a wedding dress, but she’s also pressured by the community not to make it because of local tradition. Film producer Mohamed Salman and leading actress Sally Zack opened up about their inspirations and experience making the film.
What did you learn from the character? How would you describe Maryam’s character? Maryam’s favorite color is red. The vibrant shade signifies a great deal about her character. She represents a person who cares about love; she wants to make peace with her mother.
You were born and raised in Saudi Arabia, but your background is Jordanian how difficult was it to play a Saudi girl?
only non-Saudi. Hence, I had to learn the accent in order to assimilate and get myself through. I consider myself a Saudi because this country has become my home.
Since I was born in Saudi Arabia, a part of me is Saudi. It was not difficult to play the role at all. Even my accent is Saudi. When I was in middle school, I was the
Whenever I visit Jordan, I feel like a foreigner. In my opinion, home is not the country of my origin rather it is the country that has embraced me as one of its native born.
The mother and daughter bond is special. Often, Maryam addresses her mother by the first name, exposing more than just a mother and daughter relationship. It highlights the close friendship they have crafted and fostered. I really miss Maryam. She characteristically typifies a naïve Saudi girl who has been sheltered from the outside world. The boundary of her social world ends at the edge of her mother and her fiancé’s perimeter. The film uses the characters to reveal the simplicity and naivety of life within an insular community.
MOHAMED SALMAN
What inspired you to produce this film?
How difficult is it to make movies in Saudi Arabia?
The writer, Zainab Alnaser’s script inspired me profoundly. This is the second film I have collaborated with her. She is a talented and an award-wining writer. Zainab skillfully applied her unique writing skills to transform a dramatic story into a fantasy. She created a space that afforded me artistic freedom. I capitalized and navigated the plot quite liberally and creatively. It was a pleasure working with her.
Producing movies in Saudi Arabia is not difficult at all. The Saudi government is actually very supportive. Just as in any country, it simply requires a filmmaker to obtain a filming permit.

THE SEAFOOD SPECIAL Meet Hasan Binali, owner of long-standing local gem: Darin Seafood. Why did you decide to pursue a career in the restaurant business?
What is your vision for your business?

My partner and I decided to open Darin Seafood because there were only two seafood restaurants in Khobar in 1991 and they felt much too expensive for us. We named it that because we’re from Darin Island, famous for being a pearl-diving island in the past and as a fisherman's wharf nowadays.
WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO GET YOUR BUSINESS UP AND RUNNING? To have a well-maintained business, follow these three ideals: Be truthful and respect your customers. Don't cut corners when it comes to quality. Be fair with your staff and treat them right.
What has been your greatest professional success? Biggest setback? Our success is that we have been running our business for the past 24 years. The only setback was in building up the right, qualified staff, which proved difficult but ultimately rewarding.
What's your secret to keeping customers coming in?

Your body can only digest about 12 to 15 grams of protein in a meal. With a good diet, you shouldn't have to supplement protein unless you're a serious body builder. AN ITINERARY FOR YOUR TRIP TO
CHINA
A guide to one of the world’s oldest civilizations.
Visiting China was one of the most exhilarating experiences in my life. From imperial architectural wonders to breathtaking mountains, surreal beaches to glittering metropolitans, there’s a bit of everything bundled in this beautiful country.
The history of Shanghai spans over a thousand years and closely parallels the development of modern China. Originally a small agricultural village, Shanghai developed during the late Qing dynasty (1644–1912) as one of China’s principal trading ports. Known as ‘the Paris of the East,’ Shanghai
is a great blend of old and new. The city’s heart is the Bund, a renowned waterfront boardwalk along the Huangpu River, lined with colonial-era buildings nestled between modern sky scrapers. The Huangpu River divides the city into two parts; Puxi and Pudong. Puxi is the oldest side of the city, its former financial and festive district. Pudong is Shanghai’s modern financial

A walk along the Bund is a must during late afternoon followed by a boat cruise at night to witness the dazzling skyline, showcasing distinct contrast between modern life and the past. If you only have time to visit one museum, my top pick is Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, which shows how far the city has come over the past two decades and the urban plan for the future. Shanghai Museum is also worth visiting to see ancient Chinese artifacts. It has more than 120,000 precious historical relics. Whether you’re into antiques or high-end brands, Shanghai is paradise for the shopaholics. One can lose track of time navigating the labyrinth of malls and markets in search of finding something unique. The antique market is a street full of road side sellers offering traditional Chinese pieces that will compel you to acquire at least one, if not more.

I decided to explore Mutianyu, the most magnificent fully restored section, perfect for photography enthusiasts. There is also a hiking route known as Jinshanling for adventurers. Then, there’s Jiankou, which is steep and perilous. Some people like to hike up but if you don’t want to spend the whole day walking, chairlift is a good option. The fun begins

XI’AN Xi’an is a large city and capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. Once known as Chang’an (Eternal Peace), it marks the Silk Road’s eastern end and was home to the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties’ ruling houses. At archaeological sites in Xi’an’s surrounding plains, are the famed Terra Cotta Army, which are thousands of lifesize hand-molded figures that were buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.
Make sure to visit the Great Mosque It’s one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved mosques in China, featuring architecture that is a mix of traditional Muslim and Chinese styles. The mosque was built in 742 during the Tang Dynasty (618907) when Arab travelers first introduced Islam
in Northwest China. The Great Mosque is the only one in China open to visitors, and there is no admission fee for Muslims. After visiting the mosque, you can wander the Muslim neighborhood around it to find lots of delicious halal food.

A quick travel guide for our local northern gem. By Shaistha Khan
If you’re tired of the hassles of the city and are looking for a quick-getaway without the annoyance of traffic jams, crowds and long lines, just head north. Only 80 kilometers away from Khobar lies the scenic, serene and sleepy town of Ras Tanura. To make the most of a long weekend and the pleasant weather, we decided to make a half-day trip to Ras Tanura. Arriving at 9 a.m., we headed straight for breakfast, and what better way to start a day trip in a new town than by trying out the local cuisine? 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
A local falafel shop, simply called Falafel, was our breakfast of choice that morning. We tried their falafel sandwich and we assure you, it’s nothing like you have ever had before. Filled with all the good stuff — crunchy falafel, crisp French fries and cabbage, hot sauce, tahini, pickles and more.
For some wholesome goodness, we decided to try out the new juice shop in town that everyone was raving about. Juice farm offers a variety of fresh fruit juices; we tried their cocktail juice, and undoubtedly it is worth the hype!

RISE & SHINE, RAS TANURA!
After a hearty breakfast, we headed to the beach. The nip in the air, the soothing winds, the breathtaking sky and azure-blue sea; we could feel the stress just evaporate from our bodies. We made ourselves comfortable and engaged in a good old game of cards, some board games and intimate chit-chat.
After spending a few leisurely hours at the beach, we drove around the local town, known as Rahima, where we spotted several open-area souks, with vendors selling freshlypicked fruits, locally-grown vegetables, aromatic ouds and perfumes, second-hand electronics and other knick-knacks. There are two main shopping areas in Rahima— nicknamed Men’s street and Women’s street. Men’s apparels, sporting goods and electronic stores are on Men’s street and women’s clothing, gold souks and household items are available on Women’s street.
Take advantage of the Corniche and go for walks especially now that the weather is nice.
When talking about local produce and foods, the fish market is not to be missed.
Bustling with sights, sounds and smells, the fish market is a unique experience. While there, we picked up some of the best hamour that the sea had to offer. Speaking of fish, don’t forget to check out the best fish restaurant in Rahima, which will serve your fish any way you want it — fried, grilled, steamed, you name it. Pair your fish with the best fattoush around and you will remember this meal for a long time to come!
Having spent a laid-back, enjoyable and inexpensive day in Ras Tanura, we headed back to Khobar, already reminiscing about the fun we had and looking forward to the next time we take a trip back up north.

Iban Perret
Iban Perret, known as Ibantuta, is a Bahrain-based oriental musician born in the French Basque Country.
STAFF PHOTO/TUBA SARICIMEN
He travels the world with a particular mission that lives at the heart of his style: the exploration of foreign cultures through the discovery of their music, melodies and instruments. Today, Ibantuta resonates most with the Middle-Eastern oud, which he learned and honed his craft in at the prestigious “Beit el Oud” in Abu Dhabi. He continues to study under the guidance of his teacher and renowned oudplayer, Saad Mahmoud Jawad. In 2016, he released his first music video “Ayam Zaman” that won prizes in several short movie film festivals across the world. Shot in a traditional house in Muharraq, the video is a celebration of the exchange between cultures, as it is represented by a dialogue between the instruments. Web: ibantuta.com ibantuta

Karima Sharabi’s encounter with calligraphy began when a friend asked her to write his daughter’s name in Arabic. Although her Arabic is not very strong, “my imagery has always been quite fluid and so the flow of calligraphy came quite naturally to me.” The design she presented him was one that encompassed his journey in life, adding the personal touch he was looking for.

Ayda Noor
Although Ayda Noor had a promising career in human resources, she craved to fill what was missing in her life. “I realized that if I wanted to do something and be successful in it, I should be passionate about it. Otherwise it wouldn’t last.” She started painting and reignited the love she had for art. Initially, Noor started painting teacups. She displayed her work on Instagram and saw an interest from people all over the GCC. “It was important for me to present people with something that was unique and not an imitation. With time, I realized that I liked painting traditional women, and that is what I started painting on my items.”
Followed by her success on Instagram, Noor quit her job and launched “Her Art Gallery” in Riyadat Mall, selling a diverse collection of personallypainted gift items such as teacups, coffee cups, and various household items.

THE ART THERAPY CENTER Healing through the power of art.
DALAL AL SINDI
is a trained and qualified art therapist, with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a masters’ in art therapy. She is also the founder of the Art Therapy Center in Bahrain.
Share a brief about yourself.
Well, once I qualified as an art therapist from Hertfordshire University, I started giving lectures about art therapy in Bahrain, Qatar and UAE and worked as an art therapist in the King Fahad Medical City’s Rehabilitation Hospital with patients with various mental, psychological and physical difficulties. From then on, I continued art therapy with various client groups in several facilities in Bahrain, culminating with the 82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2017
opportunity to open up the first and only art therapy practice in Bahrain.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a profession that combines both psychotherapy and the creative process of art. In art therapy, the client is given an active part by taking the role of the artistic creator. Therefore, the client is able to critically express themselves through the art-making process in a safe environment.
STAFF PHOTO/ TUBA SARICIMEN
By Tuba Saricimen
What inspires you?
My inspiration comes from the power of art and its healing properties. This led me to start the practice in Bahrain where art is appreciated and the society now is able to understand psychotherapy and its branches such as music therapy and drama therapy. Art therapy offers an alternative way for healing, which takes away the stigma about psychotherapy in the Middle East, breaking the boundary usually present in our culture.
What gives you the most satisfaction about your work?
The client and their artwork, as well as the unique challenges that come with every case are my main motivating factors in the field. The relationship of clients with art and therapy constantly changes, which I find fascinating!
Is there anything you would want people to know about art therapy?
Yes. Art therapy is a nonintrusive form of therapy that focuses on your creative mind, which is used when faced with a situation that concerns emotions and thoughts. It uses art mediums and the art therapist to effect change in a person’s life. That change is evident with clients that respond to art and have the ability to face their external images and internal issues.
