FROM THE EDITOR

What does art mean to you, Sharqiya? To us it means celebrating everything that makes this province beautiful. And what makes it beautiful? The answer is simple. It is the people – relentless in their pursuit of art and outstanding in their execution of it. Love for art is deep-rooted in the history of Sharqiya and in the next few pages we speak to three generations of artists: the established, the contemporary and the emerging and the verdict is clear: art is firmly embedded in the culture of the province. Art is here to stay. There is no one highlight to our art edition; because in this field, the people of Sharqiya have outdone themselves. We take you through a tour of the best art galleries in Sharqiya and Bahrain and even talk about Instagram as a virtual art gallery with some of our favorite “exhibits” to contribute to. At Destination, we take creative expression very seriously, and so there is something in here for everyone: the aspiring artist, the fierce bibliophile and even the social media expert. So what will it be for you? A sweet dose of art therapy or a push to pursue your passion? When we prepare an issue of Destination magazine, it always starts as a blank canvas. The stories you make for us to discover are the colors and strokes we use to paint every page.

BUSINESS

• REVIEW THE LIST BEFORE GOING This is to avoid over-buying items in the pantry and to assess real needs versus “wants.”

• TOP WAY DOWN

This is a macro approach to purchasing anything in life, and grocery is a good start. In simple words, have a budget first! “How much do you plan to spend?” Regardless of the amount, bear that number in mind before shopping and stick to it. If you manage to go below, well done!

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD

Grocery Budgeting

• LEDGER

Whether you prefer apps (Mint, Wallet, Masareef, etc.) or simple pen and paper, do note it down.

• CUMULATIVE BUDGETING

That is, multiply your weekly grocery spending by four (weeks in a month). This makes it easier to budget up your monthly spending.

• SAVE FOR THE OCCASION

If you manage to save from your weekly grocery budget, you may use the balance to treat your family with a dinner out or invite friends over. Reward is an effective way to instill spending discipline.

• TAKE YOUR CHILD ON THAT TRIP Ask him or her to help you with itemizing the grocery cart and reviewing the receipt. This is a classic exercise for better child awareness about money.

Do you suffer from overspending syndrome? The remedy may begin with a simple exercise.

Grocery shopping is an extremely effective practice to instill better budgeting habits and self-restraint.

14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

Here are some personal tips: • THE LIST Write your list two or three days before the grocery trip.

• PLAN YOUR WEEKLY MENU

This does not have to be on mealby-meal basis but think about the food offerings you wish to serve this week. Vegetables and fruit are mostly purchased fresh on a weekly basis. Over-refrigeration of these perishables can dissipate their nutritional value.

LABOR of LOVE Need a little push to turn your dreams into reality? Read on. By Anousha Vakani

LAMLICIOUS i

Lamya O. Altuwaijr

When did you get into baking and when did you decide to turn it into a career? Baking for me is a life-long passion; I’ve been doing it since I was 11. I was lucky to grow up in a home with a mother who is a fabulous cook and sisters who carry the same gene. My sisters wanted us to start a baking business since they believed that we would be unique because we are so passionate about it - and they were absolutely right.

We started from home since it doesn’t require a lot of preparation or a huge overhead cost and we accepted our first order on Jan. 14, 2009. We faced a lot of challenges early on in terms of establishing ourselves as a legal entity and growing our staff as demand grew. Some days we’d work 16-hour 16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

days, barely keeping up with customer demands. However, with hard work comes great reward, and nothing was more rewarding than reading and hearing our customers’ satisfied remarks and listening to our friends’ encouraging words.

What sets Lamlicious apart from other bakeries? Every cake is baked as if it were made for our family. We never cut corners that would jeopardize taste simply to save on costs. We bake each cake with love and care to make each and every customer happy.

What is the most Lamlicious item on your menu? It all depends on the customer really. We have a large selection of cakes and cupcakes but our top-selling items are the Red Velvet and the Mont Blanc, which is a chocolate chip cake.

Do you identify yourself more as a baker or a business woman? I am a passionate baker who managed to turn her passion into a business. Location: Rashid Mall Email: lamlicious@hotmail.com Web: lamlicious.com Tel: +966-13-868962 lamlicious

Some people are absolutely radiating with passion for what they do, and the guys at Atqeen are a perfect example. Their love for science and teaching is deeprooted and hard to miss. Their vision is simple – to unleash children’s creativity and positive energy in a productive way and learn to love learning along the way. Armed with their experiences and observations as teachers in government schools and curators at Scitech, three visionaries, Muhammad Alhumam, Hatem Al Ghamdi and Wael Aldkheel set on a mission and founded Atqeen.

Atqeen is convinced that hands-on is the way to go. Instead of memorizing textbooks and copy-pasting experiments from YouTube videos, each concept is explained with a fun experiment or experience,

They work on character building with personality tests and tailored programs. Individual attention is a crucial part of their program.

However, Atqeen is not only focused on training a new generation of scientists, mathematicians and philosophers but also on raising a generation of wellrounded people.

SUCCESS PLAYBOOK Five Tips to Make Creativity Stick in the Office By Jou Pabalate

1. Measuring Productivity Doesn’t Have to be Boring

2. Your Office Can be a Pit of Despair or a Fountain of Creativity

Visualizing how you use your time or making performance measurements tangible is one of the ways you can organize yourself while keeping a steady finger on creativity. It can be as simple as using blocks to divide your time into tangible bursts of productivity or having a coloring wall that your team paints on whenever a project task is done.

The design of your space plays a major role in making your team feel engaged or alienated. Open spaces where your staff can interact with each other is a good way to start. If there’s enough room for everybody, hot desks (office layout where anyone can set up shop anywhere) give your team the freedom to gravitate towards the space they feel most productive working from.

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

Helpful Tip

Encourage coworkers to set up their own cubicles or desks.

3. All Work and No Play Makes Abdullah a Dull Boy While it may seem counterintuitive especially for corporate firms, research has shown that giving your team time to play is a great way to get them thinking out of the box. You don’t need to turn your office into the next Google or Facebook HQ; simple things like writable walls and sheets can have them doodling and de-stressing.

Where to Buy: Whiteboard post-it sheet (Jarir)

A babyfoot table can bring challenging spirit among employees

4. Positivity Begets Creativity and Productivity Develop a positive work culture where people are able to share their insights. Good vibes breed good rapport; good rapport builds teamwork = great outcomes. According to the Harvard Business Review, researches have shown that happy employees mean better bottom line results. And if you’re the employee, thinking happy thoughts is good for your mind, body and overall well-being, so seriously smile a little more.

5. Throw a Freaky Thursday Freaky Friday is a movie about a mom and daughter finding themselves magically switching bodies. During downtime days in the office why not schedule a switcheroo between roles and teams? People can draw lots on who they will be switching with —they get to see what it’s like on the other side, learn to appreciate each other’s roles and maybe even find creative ways to approach the tasks of their comrades. DESTINATION SUCCESS PLAYBOOK is a how-to business series of Destination magazine. If you’re interested in sharing ideas or info on the topic, email us at: editor@destinationsharqiya.com

SHARQIYA’S MAESTROS Meet three generations of artists from Sharqiya. The Established Artist

• Bachelor’s and Master’s in Education, AUB • ACHIEVEMENTS Founder of Arab Heritage Gallery, one of the first art galleries in the EP Co-founder of the Business Women’s Forum of the EP Artist, fashion designer and business woman, Nabila Al Bassam lives to create. It is evident that her art, her culture and her family mean everything to her and that she is an allrounder when it comes to creating and entrepreneurship.

24 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

Silkscreen, batik, jewelry and fashion designing, you name it - Al Bassam has mastered it all. All her pieces are greatly influenced by her heritage and thus the name of her art gallery – one of the very first in the Eastern Province (EP). Her jewelry and clothing designs are also largely influenced by Arab culture.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Al Bassam’s gallery features a tiny gift shop which holds some of the quaintest crafts inspired by traditional Bedouin culture, all handmade and equally beautiful.

She has also been part of the Business Women’s Forum of the EP. She helped found it back in 1999, initiating the idea and hosting the first couple of meeting in her gallery. She has since then retired, to focus more on her “art and grandchildren.” Still, there is no denying that Al Bassam, through her passion and perseverance, has been a pioneer in the world of art and business in Sharqiya – constantly contributing, supporting and encouraging. The Contemporary Artist

How did you get started?

There was no specific time I realized this is what I was meant to do. I was always interested in the environment of the art scene. I see art as an amazing way to be free and art is my outlet to make an argument in a socially acceptable way.

26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

What do you think about the art scene in Sharqiya?

The art scene in Sharqiya is vibrant and interesting. Three aspects play a great role in what the art scene is today: the old art scene in Alhasa, the art scene in Saudi Aramco dating back to the 1950s and of course the busy Bahrain art scene. The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture will help the art scene explode. I believe that the art scene here is lacking sufficient exhibition space but this does not hold back artists as they utilize creative ways to express themselves.

Esmi, 2012

What inspires you?

I am inspired from the written word such as poetry and stories, whether read or spoken. People absorb what they read differently and allow their imagination to soar. I allow the written word to inspire me by letting my imagination take me to a space in my head where I create my concepts.

Future plans?

I want to have a huge retrospective in my hometown in Sharqiya where all my artwork is curated. One of my dreams is to have a piece of public art here. I also hope to continue to contribute to the art scene and be able to survive as an artist. Web: manaldowayan.com manaldowayan

From your exhibits, which is your favorite?

All the pieces I create are my children. I love them all equally. My most recent work was out of my comfort zone, as I had never used videography before this exhibit. I received a grant from the Rolls Royce Art Program for which I created “I Had No Wings, a seven-screen video and sound installation, which I filmed from the backseat of a moving car driving around Sharqiya. This exhibit questions the symbolism of designated spaces.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by absolutely everything. Anything you ever experience is incredible once you stop for a moment and think about it. Whether it’s my ever-racing subconscious, quantum mechanics or just how my chair stands stiff and proud on its four legs when I know it’s made from billions of atoms trying to hold together, just like you and me. Nothing is ever boring or dull. People should learn to see instead of just look.

What are your favorite things to sketch?

I love drawing with energy and to me that’s the most important element in my work: your energy is your fingerprint. You can’t copy another person’s signature freehand

because you can’t copy their energy and it’s the same with mark making, painting, music and everything else. So, to answer your question, I like to draw emotions, feelings or anything that moves me in any way, whether it’s a human figure, a young tree or an adorable cockroach. I would say most of my work has a hint of surrealism in it. I like surrealism.

What does art mean to you? Art to me is simply a means for survival, because I can never be myself completely if I didn’t create, and if I can’t fully be who I am then what’s the point of living? Whenever I’m creating something, I feel completely connected to the universe, everything around me and most importantly, my own soul. saibem

You can find a variety of coloring books at Jarir Bookstore.

Children get to have all the fun, but there’s hope for us: adult coloring books! By Mona Sabr

Art therapy has been proven to be very effective as a way to organize thoughts, build focus and provide a calming effect. Plus it’s super easy since you don’t need to stress about what to draw; you just fill in the drawing. The repetition of sliding the color pens or pencils across the page works as an effective meditation. And the end result is a beautiful piece of art. Adult coloring has also become popular because you can multitask and do it without thinking. Personally, I enjoy coloring while watching TV.

Time to get started!

Get settled in your comfort zone, choose a page to start with and just color. Sometimes I choose one color and work with different shades of it and sometimes I work with a rainbow of colors. It all depends on how I feel. Before I realize it, I’ve finished the entire page, I’m totally relaxed and I’ve got an instant piece of art. These coloring books allow us to revitalize our childhood memories when we were stress-free and full of creativity and wonder. I hope this trend continues to fill our world with vibrant colors and art!

While you’re buying the books, you might as well get something nice to color with.

The Power of

KALIMAT A literary oasis for women in Sharqiya. By Noura Al Joaib

Like any conventional book club, monthly meetings took place to discuss a book that was chosen in advance. A typical meeting started off with introductions, particularity if first-timers were in attendance, followed by an introduction of the chosen book and the author behind it. Afterwards, the members engaged in a riveting discussion, exploring the themes of the book, its

relevance and its impact on the readers. After gaining momentum and attracting more members, Al Hammad and Al Owain knew it was time to give budding writers a place to discuss their own literary works. So they decided to branch out further by introducing the book club’s sister counterpart: a writing club. Writing assignments were given out on a bi-monthly basis to fuel the creative juices and members would discuss these short works, giving constructive criticism to help each other enhance their skills. Events also took place periodically, including workshops led by rising stars in the literary field.

Kalimat is always welcoming new members. If you’re a woman over 16 and interested in joining, all you need to do is email them and begin your journey into the wonderful world of literature.

Kalimat is a literary haven, cultivating readers and writers in a beautiful and nurturing ecosystem. More than just simple discussions, members in attendance get to open up, speak more freely and articulate in a way that enriches each and every person. The Kalimat community empowers its members to create their own voices and celebrate each other. Email: kalimatliterary@gmail.com Web: kalimatliterary.com KalimatLiterary

“Your passport to the past,” Zamaaan is a collection of vintage photos from all over the Arab World. A truly spectacular blast from the past, Zamaaan is an artsy, modern way to document history.

Another account that represents culture in a diverse yet touchingly beautiful way, #myprayerroom is a collection of prayer rooms from all over the world, encouraging crosscultural and interfaith dialogue.

Arabictypography is a collection of Arabic lettering found in all corners of the world, from graffiti on a wall in Iraq to the sign on a hair salon in Baqa’a, Jordan’s refugee camp.

Adapted from the popular hashtag, #FromWhereIStand, this account is a picturesque gallery exclusive to Arabian floors.

INSTAGRAM SPOTLIGHT: Fayzodiac Based in Qatif, 23-year-old Suroor loves working on freelance art and design projects. She spends most of her social media time managing @knowme_ar and @drawitchallenge, projects she started with her friend, @natsunni. Can you tell us more about these two accounts? Know ME started two years ago, with the goal to connect Arab

creatives and raise awareness about everything art and design related. The Draw It Challenge is a sub-project where we create different unique artistic challenges. Some are short, lasting five to 10 days and some, such as the #MonsterTober challenge back in October last year, are long, lasting the entire month.

Favorite Instagrammers from the Eastern Province? Tough question because you don’t know where people are from on social media unless stated in their profile. For that reason I’ll go with five I know personally: @Meeda_, the people at @Light. studio.ar, @Natsunni, @ruuchan5 and @5rbasha.

Creativity UNCHAINED How did they make that, and that, ooh and THAT! By Ahmad Dialdin

There is a magical place here in Sharqiya where you can turn your imagination’s wildest creations into reality. It’s free and open to the public, driven by the community and dedicated to spreading the culture of invention. This cloister of creativity is called FabLab Dhahran, a collaboration between Saudi Aramco and King Fahd University for Petroleum and Minerals. There are almost 600 Fab Labs (short

38 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

for fabrication laboratories) around the world, and we have one right in our very own back yard. In it are passionate technical trainers and equally excited creative people using 3D printers, digital electronics, milling machines, laser cutters, and more to design, prototype, extrude, shape, and build their ideas into actual products. I wanted to share a few of my favorite projects that people have worked on in this workshop of wonder.

Secret Knock Box

Airport Snooze Chair

This is my kind of security. No passwords or pin codes or trying to remember if I should turn the dial clockwise or counter-clockwise first. It’s a secret knock code; so awesome. People, go to FabLab Dhahran now and make me a secret knock door for my house!

Table Hockey Some old-fashioned woodwork and new-fashioned 3D printing, and voila, table hockey! That is some really smooth work on those paddles.

Seismic Sensor Deployer And sometimes you want to make something science-y and inventive. It’s a fully-fledged robot that knows the best spots to place seismic sensors in the ground. I marveled that someone made such a thing in FabLab. It’s so intricate and way too smart for me.

I really appreciate the problem-solving insight that went into this. You’ve got a long layover in the airport, but you can’t get the sleep you desperately need in fear of missing your flight. Enter the Airport Snooze Chair. It’s got a touch screen connected to flight info and vibrating motors in the back of the chair. Sleep to soothing vibrations and be woken up in time for your flight. Brilliant.

Artistic Covers Sometimes you just want to make something artsy and pretty. I love the detail and craftsmanship with these device covers. Location: Lab 1122, Bldg. 26, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran Web: fablabdhahran.org Tel: +966-13-8602515 fablab_dhahran

What do you mean, in a relationship with your car?! By Yasir Malak

Love is also blind, not differentiating between race, color, creed or even chassis. Ah, the love of cars is a many splendored thing. Petrol-heads and grease-monkeys are some of the terms that motoring enthusiasts use to endearingly refer to one another, even when the rest of the world would prefer to just call them nuts, which is fine, since car lovers pride themselves in being 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

Social isolation aside, love of cars is also a significant commitment. Financially, cars typically represent the second largest expense item in your lifetime, topped only by the purchase of real estate. Add insurance, maintenance and upkeep, innumerable cleaning materials and detailing visits; the numbers start piling fast. That is nothing, compared

to the emotional investment car lovers make in their beloved vehicles; as no amount of money can soothe the heartache caused by an inconsiderately caused doording or a jolting drop in the numerous potholes scattered across the city. To explain this resolute bond would be as pointless as a broken pencil. There is no logical cause and effect analysis that would justify being in love with what simplistically is a machine. Amina’s Hidden Beauty We sat down and picked the brain of Bahraini designer Amina Al Abbasi about her work and impressive collections. The best selling item, Shell Clutch, SR 750

Who is Amina Al Abbasi? I’m a Bahraini artist and a lifestyle designer.

How did your brand start?

The key moment was a local art market called Market 338. I sold all of my artwork on the first day. It was at that point I realized there was something special.

46 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

I wanted to build up my brand awareness so I started printing my artwork on smartphone covers, because who doesn’t have a smartphone? It was a marketing strategy that I used to direct people towards my artwork. I started with 20 pieces and now have more than 8,000 people walking around with my artwork in the palm of their hands. This step gave me a lot of exposure and encouraged me to start different product lines. I started creating cushions, handbags, passport covers and

more. We currently have 10 product lines solely for fashion accessories that are being sold at Amina Gallery and in all GCC countries, as well as in Harrods, London.

Amina Gallery carries a collection of 25 product lines, ranging from fashion accessories to home décor. We’ve got shell and plexi clutches for SR 500 and SR 750 respectively, pouches (small ones for SR 350 and large ones for SR 400), totes (small for SR 600 and large for SR 750), wallets (SR 400) and a wide range of paintings that go anywhere between SR 6,000 and SR 20,000.

contemporary brand from the Middle East at the level of Acne Studio, for example, and that has potential to cross cultures to Western fashion audiences.

What inspired the brand name?

I wanted a term rooted from our culture that was important to me and that could easily translate. Hindamme is an old Arabic term to describe someone who has very high aesthetics and is very welldressed, so I felt it was fitting to my vision for the label.

How did Hindamme start? Hindamme started as a few concepts. I was tired of seeing elements from our past as Saudis being completely forgotten and I felt obliged to showcase them and present their beauty. But, I also wanted to create a well-made

MOHAMMED’S FAVORITES Trend for Spring /Summer 2016 The use of velvet in a more nontraditional way and 90s revival

Who is the Hindamme customer?

Anyone really. I don’t like to define the customer but I would definitely say someone that is bold and more individualistic. I am impressed by people who have their own signature style that showcases their confidence.

If you had one fashion tip to give the Hindamme customer, what would it be? Wear something that you feel good in. Follow only trends that you appreciate but apply them in your own way.

What is in the future for Hindamme?

My goal is to see Hindamme become the equivalent of beloved global brands. I want to go into other areas of design outside of fashion, but I always want to apply the highest forms of visual aesthetic in anything I do. That aside, I do want to reverse the tables in a sense and hopefully export hints of our culture to the West. You can find his collections online at hindamme.com

Tips for Younger Looking Hair What can you do for your hair?

Go Easy on the Shampoo

Shampooing daily or too frequently should be avoided; shampoos contain chemicals which cause severe dryness. Those who exercise frequently or live in humid places should let it breathe regularly and shampoo sparingly.

Lower the Heat

The overuse of heat robs your scalp of essential oils and weakens the hair follicles too. When possible, towel-dry your hair and let it dry naturally. If in a hurry, focus on drying the ends and use the cool option.

Leave it Open

Tight hairstyles pull the hair from the scalp. We may want to attain a sophisticated look, but end up paying the price of weaker hair.

Avoid Hot Showers

Hot water overdries the scalp, leaving hair brittle and dry. Make sure to wash with lukewarm water.

Don’t Forget Your Vitamins

Vitamin C helps boost collagen, while vitamin E stimulates circulation and hydrates hair follicles.

Massage the Scalp

Applying oil to hair is essential for healthy growth. More importantly, a massage invigorates the scalp and increases blood circulation. Aim to do this at least twice a week.

Skipping Daily Washes

GRILL SHACK

King Fahd St., Khobar Tiny! Even their Double Grill Shack Burger was on the smaller side. The bun and thickness were not too bad, but overall not enough to keep us coming back.

Mall of Dhahran This was an epiphany. We ordered the Persian Lamb and everything was on point. Bun: 4 Thickness: 5 Juiciness: 5 Portion: 5 Taste: 5

FUDDRUCKERS Rashid Mall, Khobar We ordered the Tumbleweed and loved it. The bun was exquisite, the cheese - beyond perfection and the meat was sensational. Bun: 5 Thickness: 5 Juiciness: 4 Portion: 5 Taste: 5

BURGER STOP

Prince Mohammed bin Fahd St., Dammam Turki Center, Khobar The Cheese Explosion is just that – an explosion of cheese amidst a juicy patty and perfect sauce. Bun: 4 Thickness: 5 Juiciness: 4 Portion: 5 Taste: 4

Truth Myth

Searching the Internet for fitness and health can be a daunting experience, from an overdose of information to often misleading advice. This series aims to shed light on these hard-held beliefs still circulating in the fitness industry today. By Mirvat Ammouri

The burning feeling while working a muscle means it’s burning fat.

The burning sensation is simply lactic acid produced when a muscle is under tension for more than 15 seconds and has used up its immediate energy stores. It is NOT fat that is being burned. A muscle has three main systems to produce the energy needed to work the muscles. The first system is immediate and the energy lasts for 15 seconds. The second is quick, with the energy supply lasting for less than two minutes, but it produces lactic acid as a waste product. And the third system is slow to produce energy but it supplies the most of all.

Any fitness activity relies on all three systems, which work continuously together to produce energy. The burn we feel is the lactic acid produced from system two. This acid is eventually flushed out and used as energy as the activity proceeds. When too much acid is produced and the muscles cannot flush it out fast enough, fatigue sets in and the muscles cannot contract properly.

Conclusion One cannot sense what he or she is burning as fuel for energy (sugars or fats). The workout determines which source of energy and which system is preferred. Tolerance to lactic acid and the burning feeling increases as one trains more consistently.

Recommendation KEEP • For beginners, THIS IN remind yourself MIND

that you will, with time, be better able to handle the achy feeling that the burn produces. • Some workouts are designed to produce that sensation because of the training benefits of these types of workouts. Take the challenge.

• It’s difficult to resist the burn, so instead of stopping an activity, try to take active rests (for example working a different muscle or doing some full body moves like burpees) every now and then, until you’re there. • The best way to flush out acid is to keep moving. So don’t stop the workout halfway through.

Stay tuned for more fitness myths in our upcoming issues.

Naturally, our food choices are not always “clean” or healthy, and we tend to crave junk food a lot. Well, that can be your blood sugar level crashing after succumbing to the junk food temptation. There are several foods known to be mood destroyers. Below is a list of known offenders, in addition to alternatives you can choose over those cravings.

INTOLERANCE IN CHILDREN Allergies: how to make it easier for your child. We hear a lot these days about food allergies; you hear allergy stories from other mommies in your child’s daycare, on social media, or on Baby Center’s portal. Food allergies are common amongst children nowadays. The reason? Some say it is genetic, pollution, or the type of diet your child consumes. Do you suspect that your child has a food allergy?

Well, from my personal experience with my child, there are signs. My daughter, 3 months old and formula fed,

70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

started having diarrhea and vomiting. Being a new mom, I couldn’t think of anything but a virus. Then after several blood tests, we discovered she was lactose intolerant. So, we switched to lactose-free formula. By the age of one, she started having asthma-like coughs and since it runs in the family, the doctors assumed she has it. We started the asthma medications, but it still didn’t subside. I went to a pediatric respiratory specialist who then discovered that she was not asthmatic; she was cow milk intolerant.

There are common foods that are known to cause allergies such as peanuts. But dear mothers, monitor the symptoms and follow your instinct. Sometimes children refuse to eat a single food like fish, or throw up after digesting. If this happens, contact your doctor or read about the symptoms. When introducing new food in your child’s diet, like fish, strawberries or peanuts, start with small doses and monitor his/her body’s reaction to it. On the other hand, if you find these symptoms happening once or twice, it might just be the normal case of your child not wanting to eat or not liking the food. Keep an eye out for reactions and symptoms.

Finally, intolerance isn’t a disease, it is just the body’s reaction to certain items around your child and not all intolerances are from food. Other elements around you may cause intolerance, like certain types of flowers, pollen, dust, etc. KEEP THIS IN MIND

Most common reactions to food allergies are either on the skin, in the gastric system, or will show in their bowel system.

WE RECOMMEND... - Teach your child about their allergy, the triggers, who to go to and where. - Keep their medication nearby at all times. - Inform their teachers, classmates, friends and family members of their allergies. - Keep a supply of alternate foods. - Order allergy tags for your child (amazon.com)

Health, Fitness and Minimalism Five simple steps to staying healthy. By Coach Sara

Minimalism is a movement that started with visual arts and music post World War II but it expanded to different forms such as design, architecture, fashion, and lately to personal lives - from uncluttering living spaces and giving up on old unfinished projects to paying outstanding debts and throwing away incomplete to-do lists. The minimalist philosophy advocates for getting rid of things that take up unnecessary space and energy and keep close those that matter. It is using and owning as simple, essential and few items as possible. I stumbled upon the minimalist lifestyle a few months ago after listening to a TED Talk called

72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

“A Rich Life with Less Stuff” by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, both known as “The Minimalists.” This video and other blogs such as Becoming Minimalist, Be More with Less, Project 333 and Zen Habits inspired me to simplify and organize. But minimalism is more than organizing a kitchen drawer or learning how to fold a t-shirt in 10 seconds. As a health coach, health and fitness are the two important aspects of my minimalist lifestyle. I want to live a meaningful and mindful life so I simplified my health and fitness plans and uncluttered everything that supported my bad habits.

Top five steps you can apply today towards a healthy, minimalistic lifestyle.

1 Go Back to Basics

2 Less Is More

Yes I know, nutritional information can be very confusing; do sugar substitutes cause weight gain? Are animal fats good for us now? And what’s up with all those kales and quinoas? One thing you need to Simplify understand your diet about nutrition plan information: and stick the majority of with the it is controlled basics; and manipulated yay veggies, by the food nay sugars. industry.

Read the food labels; if the ingredients are more than five and if you don’t recognize one of them, don’t buy it.

3 Develop a Routine

4 Spend Less Time Cooking

And schedule things around this routine. Let's be realistic, most of us are not training for a skating championship.Start with the absolute minimum (it can be as simple as following your gym on Instagram) then build on that small step.

To me, minimalism means making my health my top priority. Minimalism means something different to each one of us. What does a healthy minimalist lifestyle mean to you?

Maybe your dream is to become the Saudi Martha Stewart but ain’t nobody got time for that, right? Keep those fancy, complicated recipes for special occasions and go for simple recipes with few ingredients and easy cooking methods.

5 Crowd Out Instead of resisting the bad habits, focus on the positive. Eat simple, move every day and be patient until one day you won’t have room for any old, unhealthy ways.

Islam’s Call to Everlasting Success Islam: The road that leads to eternal peace. By Fatima Damad

Islam has established rights for everybody and are always in the best interest of every individual. Rights in Islam are given to benefit the individual and prevent any harm that might come to them.

“This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”[Surah Ma’idah5:3] Appreciating this, we should recognize how perfect our religion is. Words to Describe Islam

74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

WORDS TO DESCRIBE ISLAM

1 Timeless 2 Encompasses Everything Good 1 3 Complete 4 Applicable Everywhere

Islam prevailed when the world was in need of knowledge and guidance and still can prevail, as it is fit for every society, be it modern or primitive. Every human that has lived and will live on Earth, can find eternal peace in Islam. Which religion can guarantee you success in this life and the Hereafter, except Islam?

Islam includes everything that is good for the human body and soul, and averts anything that might bring harm to oneself. Some things may appear evil, but in reality they are decreed for the greater good that result from them. “...Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by, and know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.”(Tirmidhi)

It is a complete religion that requires no alteration; a complete way of life, governing from the moment of birth till death. Islam is a religion for everyone, as we were taught and can see in the rising numbers of Muslims all around the world from every race and culture. Allah says: “Say, “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom

belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.” (Surah Araf 07:158)

Success can only come from following what our creator has ordered us to do. If we bring out our own functioning manual, then we are sure to be doomed. Know that Islam is complete. Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

The Birth of Civil Aviation in the Kingdom

By Mohammed Mirza

In 1945, USA president Franklin D. Roosevelt presented a Douglas DC-3 aircraft to King Abdulaziz. This became the first commercial aircraft and marked the birth of civil aviation in the Kingdom. The DC-3 aircraft was soon after put into service, transporting passengers from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran. Later that year, four additional

DC-3 aircrafts were purchased and put into service. Following which in September 1946, under the aegis of the Saudi Ministry of Defense the nation’s flag carrier, Saudia, was formed. The airport in Jeddah served as its main base. The following month the first international flight took off for Palestine and returning via Beirut carrying on it pilgrims bound for Makkah. Later that year, the first overseas office of the new airlines was taking bookings in Cairo that marked the beginning of the newly formed airlines’ international operations.

IN BAHRAIN

A SERIOUS SPACE FOR SERIOUS ART

By Tuba Saricimen

88 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2016

Who is Bayan Al Barak? I am a lover and collector of art from the Middle East and Persia. The same passion which has driven me to preserve the aesthetic heritage of the Arab World as a collector, led me to meeting friends and artists who would cultivate my taste and inform my founding of Al Riwaq Art Space in 1998. Having a clear taste allowed me certain independence; we were the only art space in Bahrain showing contemporary modern art, and we faced a lot of resistance, but I was ready to keep fighting until modern art was respected on the same level as traditional art.

COURTESY PHOTO

Founder of Al Riwaq Art Space shares her passion and inspiration.

What led you to establishing a contemporary art space such as Al Riwaq Art Space? The function of Al Riwaq Art Space is more dynamic than a gallery. Artwork is not just displayed, it is a space for education where we run workshops and give public talks. It is a space for artists to develop their artistic practice and evolve. My approach to developing Al Riwaq Art Space is personal: often I’d met and developed artists from their beginnings, pushing them for residencies and giving them curatorial guidance throughout their careers. Sometimes it’s a challenge, but this is what inspires me and excites me to keep going.

What is your vision with Al Riwaq Art Space? I am interested in evolving Al Riwaq Art Space as a space for alternative education and creating a platform for emerging artists who may not have access to formal education. We have already been creating initiatives such as the artBahrain/The Nest Annual Art Prize for this purpose, but I intend to expand on this in the coming years.

What would you say is the biggest accomplishment of Al Riwaq Art Space? The establishment of Alwan 338 and showing public art was a huge step forward for Al

Riwaq Art Space. Being able to showcase unconventional art in public spaces means a lot for us, as art is not just about collecting; it’s about changing mindsets. As an institution, when you are able to effect change in how people accept unconventional ideas, you can break barriers on a cultural level.

What advice do you have for emerging young artists in the GCC? We encourage artists to take themselves and their practice seriously, so that they will be taken seriously on an international level. I encourage you to see and experience regional and international art, to explore your own tastes and to also gain perspective of your art on a global level. Location: Osama Bin Zaid Ave., Manama Tel: +973-17717441

We play very distinct and complimentary roles which feed into the cultural production of Bahrain and out into the region.
