WELCOME TO THE SECOND EDITION OF THE
FANTASIA INDUSTRY RENDEZ-VOUS AND THE
FRONTIÈRES INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTION MARKET!
We travelled a long road to get to the first edition of the event last year and were very satisfied with its results. Some Frontières projects teams met production and sales partners that yielded real advancement for the projects, new potential business relationships were made and many friendships were created. It felt like a notable meeting of great minds in the genre film world, something that needed to happen and that has the potential to grow. I’d like to thank every one of the first year attendees who helped spread the good word about the event through their professional network. You made a difference. Just after its first edition, the Frontières International Co-Production Market got major recognition with its successful bid to MEDIA Mundus, to expand the initiative as a circuit in between North America and Europe. We are already preparing for the first European edition of Frontières in April 2014. Frontières will now take place in Brussels in April and Montreal in July. Our objective is for Frontières to quickly become a pivotal meeting point for independent genre film production. The recognition of genre films has advances this year as well. Many well established sales agents have further developed their genre slates. Films have been released through VOD platforms with great results for niche audiences, such as V/H/S and THE ABCs OF DEATH, that reached Top 10 positioning in VOD revenues upon their releases. In many territories, more genre film projects have finally been getting subsidies from their local institutions, which typically support either arthouse fare for the festival circuit or crowd-pleasers for the general public. The enthusiastic support of MEDIA Mundus is a great sign of recognition for the market potential of genre films and

WELCOME its appeal towards the younger audience and cinephiles alike. Over the past year, we’ve seen more film projects launching effective crowdfunding campaigns, which was also explored by more established production companies for the first time with surprisingly positive results. These campaigns have raised the popular awareness of fundraising, which in turn will increase chances for independent genre films to find backers outside of customary financing circuits. Crowdfunding ventures have also expanded, going from Kickstarter and Indiegogo, which target the general population, to Slated, which created a new social platform for professionals interested in financing films and following their progress. These funding methods are not yet the only source a filmmaker could tap for the financing of its project, but they complement usual approaches well. They also serve as giving quantified analytics of niche markets ready to be served, which comes in handy in early sales efforts. We’ve also seen more independent films successfully explore self-distribution, in partnership with companies that have arisen in the VOD world, and others that have affirmed their grounded popularity. Many have found that traditional distribution channels might not always serve indie films in the best ways, fracturing territories, delaying release dates and adding costly operating charges. Eschewing the conventional models, more filmmakers are choosing to minimize intermediates by releasing on select platforms serving the global market, with the same release dates across the world. This method has the advantage of minimizing piracy, the lack of availability being a frequent excuse for illegal downloads. Integrators with good relationships with market leaders, such as Netflix and iTunes, as well as companies

offering personal marketplaces on the web, like VHX, are becoming leaders in this new distribution model. The next step of industry involvement for us at Fantasia is specifically in this stream, to help filmmakers by lightning a passage for online distribution that reaches the films’ audiences in the most direct way possible. This rise of autonomy in film financing and merchandising is breathing more independence in indie filmmaking, inspiring it to reach higher in its originality, not only of subject and style, but also in its reach towards its audience. The Fantasia Festival has always been a champion of new and unique talents, and it is exciting forus to now work towards the empowerment of filmmakers, from a film’s inception to its diffusion in the world. All of us at Fantasia thank you for taking time out of your busy work schedule – and surely having to negotiate with the family in this summer holidays season – to be with us for this Industry RendezVous weekend. I hope you’ll have a great time, coming back home with improved business prospects and many new or furthered friendships. The special family feeling of the genre films crew, our mutual respect of each other’s work and unique love of movies is what makes the genre film world so special.

We live in a media-driven modern age where the once quaint concept of clandestine devil-worshippers has come out of the shadows and emerged into the open world of broad cult celebrity, spreading its evil influence through well publicized rallies and highly visible television and internet coverage. This is the new world of gods and monsters that our hero, professional skeptic Mark Dunning, must wade through to expose the malefic powers of celebrity author and popular self-help guru Julian Karswell, whose deal with the Devil has brought him wealth, fame and power, and brought to others, his acolytes, terror and violent death. Of late of course, traditional vampire, zombie and werewolf stories have become all the rage, but the sensibility, approach and tone of David Tully’s adaptation of CASTING THE RUNES are out of the box and quite unique – scary, funny and ultimately tragic. To my mind, CASTING THE RUNES expands its potential by pairing its hair raising genre thrills with utterly believable central characters caught up in a deeply affecting, if tragic love story. The scares become scarier; the thrills more thrilling, because the world feels more real and we genuinely care about and believe in the fate of our hero, and therefore ourselves. Joe DANTe emerged from the low-budget world of Roger Corman to become a sly
practitioner of witty genre films and television shows. After working as an editor on several Corman projects such as STuDenT TeACheRS (1974) and GRAND THeFT AuTo (1977), Dante made his directorial debut with the camp classic, PIRAnhA (1978), which served as a calling card for more mainstream hollywood movies. he made even more of a splash with The howlIng (1981), as well as had huge success with gRemlInS (1984). He then showed exuberant life with mATInee (1993).Following a brief sojourn into television, Dante returned to the silver screen with the violent SmAll SolDIeRS (1998), followed by looney TuneS: BACK In ACTIon (2003). The Gardner family moves to a remote country locale to leave the hustle of the 21st century. All is well until a meteorite crashes into their front yard. Rapidly, the curious qualities of this mysterious visitor from the stars start to infect the properties of space and time around them. Overnight the water turns brackish, containing an oily rainbow sheen. The crops ripen early and new forms of flora sprout from nowhere. Most disturbingly the members of the Gardner family are changing too! Whatever is contaminating their farm is mercilessly transforming them into the living manifestation of their darkest fears.

SCARLETT AMARIS
WRITER
The celebrated H.P. Lovecraft, one of the true masters of horror, always insisted that his intention, throughout his work, was to convey an atmosphere of cosmic terror – of mankind’s precarious position in the cosmos and the black infinity that surrounds us. Despite Lovecraft’s growing reputation with a new generation of fans, no cinematic adaptation to date has attempted to tackle these core themes, let alone imbue them with the seriousness and relevance they deserve. In recent years physicists working in the fields of string theory and quantum mechanics have begun to confirm some of Lovecraft’s wildest speculations. Our intention is to transpose the terrifying essence of his classic tale to the post-modern present and in doing so unlock the true potential of the crawling chaos that engulfs the lives and sanity of the unfortunate Gardner family. By deploying the tools made available by cutting edge video technology we plan to take the audience on an unforgettable journey from the familiar, green fields of Earth to the mind wrenchingly alien vistas that lurk beyond the human spectrum. As any fan of weird fiction knows this is a film that is not only overdue – but which needs to be made! RIChARD STAnley is a South African born writer and director whose early works HARDwARe (1990) and DuST DeVIl (1992) transformed and energized the genre.
In recent years he has created a series of award winning documentaries concerning the supernatural and the vicissitudes of human evil. his latest offering, THe oTHeRwoRLD, a feature length exploration of an alleged space-time portal in the south of France and its effect on the locals, makes it’s world premiere at this years Fantasia festival. with The ColouR ouT oF SPACe, Richard intends to make a triumphant return to his horror roots.

After years studying abroad, Antony returns home to take over the empire of his dying father, Corti. He is reunited with his childhood friend, Raoul, now a brilliant quantum physicist, and Lucie, the victim of a terrible accident that left a foot deformed. Raoul is fascinated by dark matter, the invisible matter which makes up the very fabric of the universe. Jealous of his late father’s affection for Raoul, Antony steals Lucie from his friend. Meanwhile, Raoul, almost by accident, recreates the conditions of the very beginning of the universe: a microscopic ‘big bang’ which warps time and space, which Antony uses to mastermind a heist of cosmic proportions . . .

Why do I want to make this film? To resurrect one of the greatest genres in French cinema: film noir. This is a film noir about matière noire, a crime story about dark matter. Behind the action and spectacle, there is a simple story about human relationships: friends and enemies, fidelity and betrayal, love and hate . . . I simply want to make a film that I would like to see: about the here and now, but which is also suspenseful, packed with action, full of emotions and, above all else, fantastic in the true sense of the word. that takes place entirely upon an isolated Finnish island off the coast of the mainland. The main story charts both Suzanne’s emotional journey into the mind of her father and the unfolding mystery of his death as Suzanne discovers all is not what it seems on this strange, isolated island. The story takes place in a twilight world, in an eerily beautiful, hostile place, where strange things can and, like a dream, where the impossible can seem possible. This is a world of stark contrasts. Of dark forests lit up by moonlight reflecting off snow or icicles twinkling in the darkness like stars in the night. Of sweat dripping from skin in a hot sauna while a freezing lake awaits outside. Of ice crackling into whiskey by blazing log fires. And where the deep red of blood stains the pure, brilliant white of snow. Ultimately, the aim is to create a world that feels utterly real and uncannily familiar, and one that has echoes of our collective dreams and fairytales. mIChAel KInIRonS has written and directed five short films to date: FAllIng ANGeLS, THe eLePHANT AND THe SeAGuLL , TReeClImBeR, LowLAND and I CAn’T See you, which have all had successful runs on the international festival circuit. When teenagers Willis and Jamie discover Bethan, a beautiful woman, chained up in their neighbor Harry’s basement, they assume she is there as part of a sex game, not knowing that Harry is actually a serial killer and she is his next victim. Having heard that Harry has been run over and in a coma, Willis sees this as the perfect opportunity to learn about women and love. Unfortunately for him though, Bethan is much wilder than he imagined and Harry is soon on his way back to finish the job.

At its core, HARRY’S BLONDE deals with the adolescent male’s fear, confusion and desire for the opposite sex, and the redeeming power of love. With a heightened reality plot, the film will be thrilling, funny and terrifying. Bethan and Harry are the manifestation of 16 year old Willis’ id and ego. Bethan is like his id: dark, instinctive, and constantly striving for pleasure; Harry is his ego: Repressed, intellectual, and living in an elaborate fantasy he has designed to justify his terrible deeds. Willis must confront and defeat both in order to save his life, figuratively and literally. The film will confront the audience with the dark, unsettling parts of their psyche that they would rather leave unexplored. The lightness of the comedy will help define the story and characters, making them even more disturbing and unsettling. The violence in HARRY’S BLONDE will only come in short bursts. I want the audience to wince at every punch, engaging their imagination and making them feel that they’ve seen more than they actually have. Sound design, special effects and performance will be key tools in achieving this. Most of all, I want the audience to be scared, entertained and leave the cinema wanting more. me, how the ending haunted me for years after seeing it; it still does, in fact. I’m sure that experience has had an influence on my own films. COMBAT SHOCK and LIFE IS HOT IN CRACKTOWN are dark and violent, nihilistic even, but they’re not considered horror films, per se. That’s why I’ve wanted to do a zombie film forever, and when my producers pitched me this story—an American backpacker traveling through Munich during the Oktoberfest, falls in love with a beautiful woman who works there, all to have it crumble after a viral outbreak turns dead people into murderous flesh-eating zombies—I thought it was a perfect fit for me. OKTOBERFLESH is a strong character piece taking place in a foreign culture. I live in Germany so I know this culture; I know the feeling of being a stranger in a different land. It’s also about the breakdown of society, which is a subject in all my films. And it’s also got a sort of cool love story, but with zombies. lITTle Kong FIlmS was founded by Christoph Ito herrmann and matthias g.

set him on a path of dark and disturbing films dealing with realistic characters and subject matter. No wAy HoMe, his second feature, again deals with violent drama in a social setting topped off by powerful performances from Tim Roth and Deborah Kara unger. lIFe IS hoT In CRACKTown is a down and dirty vision of Hell, taking place in a crack-infested neighborhood. One of the biggest strength about this novel is its powerful and totally unique story. You’ve never seen something like this before! It is very realistic, so I want to emphasize this realism and treat the whole thing like a true story film. One of the many things I plan on doing to enhance this reality sensation is to insert some notes just before the end credits, to explain what happens afterwards to the survivors, exactly like we see normally in a true story film or even a documentary. I want people to believe that it actually happened. For many years, IzABel gRonDIn’s short film work has been screened at underground and Fantasy Film Festivals across the world. It’s CHICAGO and OLIVER meets HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, set in 1960’s and 70's London. Ray Davies is on board to re-record and produce the album with our cast. I have wanted to make this movie ever since I was 15 years old. That’s both the age of our protagonist, and the age I was when I first heard The Kinks original concept album for SCHOOLBOYS IN DISGRACE. The album is full of timeless, catchy rock songs that still remain some of my favorites. A movie I keep envisioning in style, tone and comedy is SINGING IN THE RAIN. Adult Mr.Flash will be part Gene Kelly and part James Cagney. The bigger musical numbers will have the same tone and scope as the large numbers in OLIVER. Streets, school, courts and squares will have amazingly choreographed dance numbers (a la GREASE or HAIRSPRAY) by Grammy winning Trish Sie. Ray and I have discussed having current iconic musicians performing on the new soundtrack. I think of this as a high school musical for everyone who hated HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL . That’s Lila. But Lila is also supernatural creature that can make nightmares come true. Lila is a character out of a fairy tale; the film should have a fairy tale’s bright colors. We’ll use a floating camera style to follow the characters; we should feel like the characters are pulling the camera into the story. We should be worried of what’s hiding just out of view. We plan for a big orchestral score, such as Howard Shore’s for THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and Bernard Herrmann’s thriller scores for Hitchcock’s films. Overall, the film is a slow burn. I intend to examine the history of the Canadian B-movie industry by illuminating the human side of the story, creating engaging portraits of the unrecognized artists who established it, and helped it to thrive. The stories of artists persevering in the face of rejection will serve to emotionally engage and invigorate the creative spirit in audiences around the globe. The time is ripe to tell this funny, informative and historically significant story since the key players are still alive and lining up to share their experiences. The film will include interviews with filmmakers and producers from every era of CANUXPLOITATION. As a director, influenced by the likes of Hitchcock, Polanski, and Kubrick – great directors who made genre films – my goal is to make an atmospheric suspense thriller in a contained environment: a haunted Muscle car. THE CAR can be shot well on a low budget as it is very contained, has a small cast, and most of the SFX are in camera. The film will be directed to evoke terror and dread through suspense and atmosphere as opposed to blood and gore. An example of recent suspense stories that I am influenced by would include BLACK SWAN, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, THE MACHINIST, THE SIXTH SENSE, like THE CAR, all psychological horror stories that have a protagonist who is not sure whether the events of the story are real, or supernatural. In the history of mankind the family is of fundamental importance, in both the evolution of the individual and the complex structure of social reality. The family has always been subject to various philosophical, anthropological, artistic and cultural manifestations. It turns out to be the touchstone that generates many responses from our human condition. For the family there is the concept and symbol of home, it plays a key role for the members as a place of protection, shelter and security, but it can sometimes become prison and representation of the deepest fears. Here is where I place, through a cabin lost into the woods, the story of a family, their interaction and growth of each character. DARKNESS is a story that involves family relationships pushed to the extreme. I argue in this project a world full of symbolism, reality and sometimes elements that touch of fantasy, this construction is based on the psychological profiles of the characters, this because in my work conceptualizing and structuring these profiles represent a way of expressing my deepest fears and desires, how I understand life and change. I seek to explore the elements of human change, loss, family and faith. DAnIel CASTRo zImBRón born in méxico City in 1983. he studied in Centro

Four achingly conflicted high school seniors – a girl and three boys – fraught with pre-graduation jitters, embark on a road trip for their Senior Week festivities and soon find themselves lost in rural, implacable desolation . . . at an old, condemned private zoo. It’s here they discover the only inhabitants in this hellish wilderness: monstrously homicidal chimpanzees. And their demented surrogate Mother, an old vengeful woman. In the ensuing life and death battle against the murderous creatures, our four heroes come to define their own “natural selection”. Because surviving high school is never easy.

Inspired by the terrifying nightmares experienced by everyone after witnessing the diabolical flight of the winged monkeys of Oz, EMERALD FALLS follows in the footsteps of horror movies about vindictive animals dishing out just desserts. Only this time, the victims are not greedy businessmen or fame-starved scientists, they’re high-school graduates whose only crime is their inability to control their own animal passions – ironically. Combining the nail-biting tension of a siege movie with the outlandish fun of campy satires like SHAUN OF THE DEAD or LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, EMERALD FALLS lacks nothing in the laughs and violent dismemberment departments. Unfolding at night on desolate country roads and in an old abandoned zoo, and set during senior week, this off-the-hook teen sex horror/comedy offers a rich tapestry of classic horror tropes and motifs along with a golden opportunity for a memorable soundtrack. BoRIS RoDRIguez debuted with the award-winning hAVAnA KIDS followed by BeSo noCTuRno which premiered in Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery Section in 2000 and was later selected for a 2006 momA retrospective. his 2013 uS theatrical release, eDDIe - The SleePwAlKIng CAnnIBAl , premiered at Tribeca and Karlovy Vary, other festival participation included edingburgh, Strasbourg and the leeds International Film Festival where it won the mélies d’Argent award for Best Feature. eDDIe was also the recipient of the Black Tulip Award at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam and was nominated for the narcisse Award at the neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland. Growing up in the 80’s, the lines that defined cinematic genre were less rigid. Gremlins were household pets and monsters were sculpted works of art, not computer generated creatures. THE MORTUARY COLLECTION is a contemporary love letter to that era, a time when all things weird and wonderful seemed possible. THE MORTUARY COLLECTION aspires to remind audiences that horror films can be more than mindless torture and gore. Taking cues from some of the most innovative visual storytellers of our time, I’m looking to craft a rich and visually stylized horror film that will appeal to both horror and non-horror fans alike. A live-action, gothic fable that relies on character-driven storytelling and genuine suspense. A film that reminds audiences that thought-provoking horror is alive and well. Beyond the initial feature film, THE MORTUARY COLLECTION is poised to be the launch of a brand new horror franchise. We want to make a real horror film that is short and tense, with a minimum of exposition, and tells its story mainly through images; a film of constraints which will be controlled as much as possible in terms of graphic and narrative elements, to get the information across in a precise manner. When Drago enters his apartment and the electronic monitoring tag is put on him, we almost never leave this perimeter again. We want to work on the idea of confinement and claustrophobia. This film is about solitude and isolation, with its main character who wants to get closer to others, but is unable to. A man on the way to rehabilitation who is trying to obtain the custody of his daughter but also and above all, a horror film for adults : The fear, anxiety and terror aren’t the aim, but rather, a vehicle for conveying emotion which serves this story of a father who absolutely wants to keep his ties with his child. An urban reworking of the haunted house film in which the hero is obsessed by his guilt but also by a creature even lonelier than he is. The walls end up literally attacking this man who can no longer stand being a prisoner in his own home.

We’re looking forward to reinventing RESERVOIR HILL as a visceral cinematic experience of the highest order. A gripping narrative with high production values and unforgettable performances; Exhilirating - Terrifying - Heartbreaking - Life Affirming Reservoir Hill, the series, evolved over two seasons, from a teenage story about bullying and revenge - it grew into a psychological thriller about murder and deception. We drove this evolution because the more dangerous, edgier content appealed to us as much as the audience. We love the idea that RESERVOIR HILL can capture something of what it feels like to be teenager– at that point in your life where you question everything: authority, yourself and your place in the world. And in this case, your questions, suspicions and fears are justified–because in RESERVOIR HILL , everything is a lie. We’re moved by stories where the risks are great and the challenges immense, but where the rewards are simple, human and real. We want RESERVOIR HILL to be one of those films where the teenage audience walks away feeling like they’ve experienced a revolution; seen a world change, but ultimately connected with a wonderful young woman as she finds her truth and her love. One of the central themes I’ve focused on as a filmmaker over the past 50 years is the rights of women. As the only male in a family totally comprised of females, I feel very passionate that a woman should have the right to do what she wants with her own body. The 60’s was the game changer: the introduction of “the pill”. Women took control of their bodies as well as their lives and were finally given the opportunity to demand equal rights with men. This created fear in a certain class of men, making them believe they were not only losing their power over women, but also their masculinity. They began to use Religion as a reason to regain power and control over women. They banned abortions and contraception devices calling it “evil” and “against God’s will”, as sex was only to procreate and not for licentious pleasure. This mindset still exists today. SHE WHO MUST BURN is a political, feminist, ultra-violent horror movie. It pits a strong willed, courageous woman against a family of right wing religious fanatics. The film grabs the audience by the throat in the first scene and doesn’t let them go until the last frame. I believe SHE WHO MUST BURN has the potential to be my most dynamic and powerful film yet. A film that will contain true in your gut terror, that is not based on how many gallons of blood or number of bodies it contains, but that is drenched in much deeper, hurtful personal horror, the kind that leaves emotional as well as physical scars to its characters and spectators. mAuRICe DeVeReAux is a writer/director/editor with his own production company. His feature, enD oF The lIne, premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival before going on an extensive 38 festival run across the globe, where it has garnered critical and audience acclaim, winning many prizes, including jury prizes at the Fantastic Fest in Austin and the nashville Film Festival and Audience Awards for Best Feature at Fantasia International Film Festival (montréal ), Fantaspoa (Brazil) and Dead By Dawn (Scotland). It was released on DVD and BLuRAy around the world.
