How to

Avoid

Medical Identity Theft

M

edical identity theft is when someone uses another person’s name or insurance information to get medical treatment, prescription drugs or surgery. It also occurs when dishonest people use a patient’s information to submit false claims to insurance companies and Medicare. It’s so important to protect yourself from insurance fraud. Follow these dos and don’ts to keep your information safe.

DON’T w w w

Don’t give your medical, financial or insurance information too easily. Only give your insurance/ Medicare identification to those who’ve provided you with a medical service. Don’t trust door-to-door salespeople or telemarketers selling health care services or durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs and walkers). Never sign blank insurance claim forms.

DO

w Call Network Health if your wallet or purse is lost or stolen. Make sure to let us know as soon as you can. w Do keep accurate records of all your health care appointments. w Do read your explanation of benefits (EOB) carefully and make sure all services listed are services you actually received.

What to Do If You Believe Someone is Using Your Information

Sometimes people don’t report scams because they’re ashamed or embarrassed. Others are unsure of whom to report the scam to. To report fraud to the appropriate authorities, call your local police department or visit www.consumerfraudreporting.org. If you feel you are the victim of an insurance scam, call us at 800-378-5234, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (TTY 800-947-3529). Or, you can email us at medicaresiu@networkhealth.com. In your email, be sure to include the following. • Your name and telephone number • Description of the incident • Date of occurrence • What type of information was disclosed to the scammer • Any contact information you may have for (such as social security number, banking information or the scammer (such as a phone number and address) medical ID information) • Let us know if a police report was filed To learn more about how to prevent fraud and scams, visit www.stopmedicarefraud.gov/preventfraud/index.html. 4 | C oncierge

health Organic vs. Conventional Foods

What’s the difference? W

hen shopping for produce, you may have noticed an increase in organic food the past few years. The organic choice typically costs more than its conventional counterpart, but what are you getting for that extra cost? Here’s a guide to what organic means.

What’s considered organic?

Organic refers to the way farmers process and grow food like fruits, vegetables, grains, meats and dairy products. Organic farming uses alternative practices for fertilizing, controlling weeds and preventing livestock disease.

Organic labeling

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets standards for what can be labeled organic. Organic foods can be labeled two ways. w 100 percent organic – This means the product is completely organic or made of all organic ingredients. w Organic – This means the product is at least 95 percent organic. Sometimes, you may see the term “natural” labeled on foods. This doesn’t mean the product is organic. Only foods that meet USDA standards can be labeled organic.

Is organic food more nutritious?

Organic foods must meet the same quality and safety standards as conventional foods. According to Mayo Clinic, a recent study examined the past 50 years’ worth of scientific articles about the nutrient content of organic and conventional foods. The researchers concluded that organically and conventionally produced foods are comparable in their nutrient content.

Why do people choose organic?

There are many reasons people choose organic foods. Some buy organic to avoid pesticides and additives used on foods. Others prefer organic for environmental reasons, or because they feel it’s fresher. Just because a food is organic doesn’t mean it’s healthy. No matter what you eat, try to avoid foods high in sugar, fat, salt and calories. Whether you buy organic or conventional foods, check the label. NetworkHealthMedicare.com

Four Ways to Avoid Going Back into the Hospital D

espite excellent advances in care and service, most people would rather not be in the hospital. Still, recent studies show nearly one in five Medicare patients return to the hospital within 30 days of leaving. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 90 percent of readmissions are unplanned. The good news? If you have a hospital stay, there’s plenty you can do to help your recovery.

1

Ask questions. Good communication is key. When you’re sitting down with your hospital discharge planner, take lots of notes and get instructions in writing. Ask about any changes to medications, diet or activity restrictions. It’s also helpful to have a friend or family member there, so they can hear the instructions too.

2

Know Your Meds. Do you understand all of your prescriptions? Medication problems are one of the top reasons people have to be re-hospitalized. Your instructions may change while you’re in the hospital, so make sure to work with your doctor and pharmacist to understand when and how to take your prescriptions.

3

Have someone help out. Many people recover best in their own home, but you might need assistance from family, friends or others. Depending on your needs and situation, you may be eligible for home health care. Call your health care concierge to find out more.

4

Make and keep follow-up appointments. Don’t skip appointments made to follow-up on how you’re doing. And, after a hospital stay, you should always call your doctor. To help with your recovery planning, he or she will need to know about your recent change of health.

Making Your Medications Work

What’s one of the biggest reasons treatments fail? Not taking medications exactly as a doctor prescribes.

T

his simple concept can lead to higher health care costs, worsening symptoms and more time spent in the hospital. According to the American College of Preventive Medicine, not following a doctor’s medication instructions accounts for 30 to 50 percent of all treatment failures. When you take your medication, how much and how often can have a big impact on whether or not it works. It may seem OK to change your medicine, but you should never do so without talking to your doctor first. How can you make sure you’re doing things right? Start with this list of questions and tips.

UNDERSTAND

If you don’t know the answers to these questions, ask your doctor for instructions. w Why am I taking this drug? w How and when should I take it? w How should I store it? w What are the possible effects?

ORGANIZE Almost 70

percent of Americans take at least one prescription medication, and more than half take at least two, according to a study by researchers at Mayo Clinic.

NetworkHealthMedicare.com

w w w

If you take multiple medications, create a list of all of them to help remember the instructions for each. Use a pill box or organizer to keep all your meds in order. Make a list of any and all questions you have about your medications and bring the list to your next doctor appointment.

AVOID w w w

Don’t take your medication for any symptom it wasn’t prescribed for. Don’t take more or less of a medication unless your doctor says so. Don’t take someone else’s medication and don’t give your medication away. Prescriptions are specific to each person’s health and wellness. C oncierge | 7

Overcoming the Obstacles How healthy decisions improved Robert Pattillo’s life more than he thought possible

T

aking steps toward a healthy life is difficult no matter what. But, when you have chronic conditions, the difficult can start to feel impossible. 10 years ago, Robert Pattillo was diagnosed with chronic heart failure (CHF). CHF is a serious condition in which the heart doesn’t pump as well as it should to meet the body’s need for oxygen. Symptoms for CHF can include shortness of breath, extreme tiredness or weakness, weight gain and irregular heartbeat. At the time of Robert’s diagnosis, he was working as an Aerospace Metal Worker. It was a job he loved and had done nearly every day for forty years. He found the work challenging but always enjoyed it. During his career, he worked on the Hubble Telescope and missiles. He jokes, “I could tell you more, but you don’t have the security clearance.” Unfortunately, because of his diagnosis, Robert was forced to retire before he had planned. It was a difficult transition. But the equipment where he worked could’ve interfered with his pacemaker, so he needed to leave the job he loved. Robert had lived most of his life in San Diego, California.

After retiring, he was ready to move on. He met some good friends from Wisconsin and started to think about moving here. He looked into the health care and insurance options available to him and soon made his decision. A couple years after his CHF diagnosis, Robert was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (or COPD), so access to quality, affordable health care was incredibly important. Moving to Wisconsin was quite an adjustment, but he handled the transition by becoming an active member of Evergreen Church in Stevens Point. He explains, “It was hard at first, going from a semi-workaholic to retirement.” Still, he applied the same work ethic he had toward his job to volunteering. Through his church’s organization, the Evergreen Community Initiative, he was able to help distribute clothes, food and hygiene items to those in need. He also works in their soup kitchen which feeds 80 people a week.Nancy in her Robert enjoys the volunteer work and being active in church. He credits his faith with providing the motivation needed to improve his health. While Robert had been active for years, in September of

COVER STORY

2013, he began taking serious steps to control his health conditions. Robert’s doctor had wanted to prescribe him insulin to control his blood sugar levels, but Robert asked for a chance to bring it down with exercise and diet first. Robert turned to his local YMCA. After getting his membership, he started in their diabetes management program which also gave him access to a dietitian and personal trainer. Robert saw results within four months. He lost 18 pounds and his blood sugar levels went down over 100 points. “Now, exercising is what keeps my blood sugar levels down and it also helps my heart and lungs.” On top of exercising, Robert also started making healthier food choices. “I just had to change a few things and it made a big difference.” One change was limiting fast food to once a month. He still loves his burgers and fries, but he feels better only eating it once in a while. For dinner, he now eats a lot of grilled chicken or fish with vegetables, and he focuses on portion control. He’s close to his goal weight and he’s feeling great. He says, “It’s nice to be wearing pants I haven’t fit into in years.” In addition to creating healthy food and exercise habits, Robert also made sure to take his medications as prescribed. With three different conditions, there can be a lot to keep straight, so he was glad he could call his Network Health nurse care manager with any medication questions. “It’s nice to have someone that knows your history and that you can talk to about health updates and get suggestions.” “Network Health is by far the best insurance I’ve ever had. I have access to programs and assistance I never could have gotten some place else.” Robert’s determination, along with the extra support he received, allowed him to effectively manage his health. And, it’s clear his hard work is paying off. He’s feeling better than he has in years, and at his most recent visit with his cardiologist, he learned he had zero new incidents with his heart. 10 | C oncierge

A Screening that Could Save Your Life s stated by Benjamin Franklin, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In the United States, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths that affect both men and women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Starting at age 50, it’s important to get a colorectal cancer screening every 10 years. Medicare covers this screening, it’s effective for early detection and could help save your life. Colonoscopies are common, painless procedures that use a tiny camera to exam the colon and rectum. During the exam, your doctor will check for problems.

If you have questions about the coverage of this screening, call your health care concierge or 800-378-5234 (TTY 800-947-3529), 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday - Friday. 12 | C oncierge

Meet Sandra Neuman

To help you get to know your health care concierge a little bit better, watch for a feature on a different concierge in every issue of our newsletter.

Q: How did you begin your career as a health care concierge? A: “I never worked with insurance prior to coming to Network Health. But, I believe working with older adults and helping special needs children before coming to Network Health has helped me in so many ways. I’ve always had a heart for helping people, and I’m glad my current position allows me to do that. We put a lot of pride in the fact that we will go the extra mile to help our members, and it’s nice to hear from my members that they appreciate it.” Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: “I love the experience of working with Medicare and Medicaid members. Before I worked at Network Health, if someone said insurance, I would run the other way. Now I understand how insurance works and I love that I can help our members understand too. And, I love the resources Network Health provides. I’m able to work with social workers and nurses to get the member what he or she needs.” Q: Are there any challenges as a health care concierge? A: “The greatest challenge is getting all my special needs members the help they need, when they need it. When dealing with Medicare, Medicaid and low-income subsidy you have to know where to get answers, so you’re always learning.”

Q: How is Network Health different from other places you’ve worked? A: “My work as a volunteer with a retirement home assisting the elderly on outings was an eye-opening experience. It helped me understand our older generation’s outlook on life. I really enjoyed the time I spent at the Angelous Retirement home. Also, I was a substitute teacher’s aide, working every day for a year with special needs second graders. This job gave me the experience and joy of helping others. They taught me so much more than I could have imagined. While my past experiences are different from Network Health, they also helped prepare me for my current role.” Q: How do you spend your free time? A: “I like getting together with friends to play cards and spending time with family. I’ve been married to my husband Jerry for 30 years. We have a daughter, Amber, and two grandchildren. I enjoy going up north and camping whenever I have the time.”

Coverage that Travels with You

T

raveling can be one of the great joys of retirement. Checking out new places and meeting new people is exciting. But, trips can also be stressful—especially if you need medical care. When you’re traveling outside Wisconsin (but still in the United States), you can rest easy knowing you’re covered.

As a Network Health Medicare Advantage (PPO) member, your medical services will cost the same as if you were in Wisconsin. Just make sure to show your Network Health ID card— this will help with the billing process. And when you’re outside the United States, you’re still covered for emergency care. If you have questions about your travel benefit, call your health care concierge or 800-378-5234, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (TTY 800-947-3529). The benefit information provided is a brief summary, not a complete description of benefits. For more information, contact the plan. Benefits, formulary, pharmacy network, premium and/or copayments and coinsurance may change January 1 each year. Limitations, copayments and restrictions may apply.

Did You Know? Network Health evaluates new technologies and applications of existing technologies on a regular basis. This includes evaluating medical procedures, drugs and devices. New technologies are reviewed by a group of participating physicians and health plan staff who make recommendations for inclusion as a covered benefit. The review process also includes the evaluation of information from government regulatory bodies and published scientific evidence. C oncierge | 19
