Dear Fellows, It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the family of over 800 researchers who have joined the ranks of the Rothschild Fellows over the past 43 years. We are especially happy to finally be able to meet all of you in person, after several years in which even this simple act was beyond our reach. The Rothschild Fellowship programme is one of Yad Hanadiv’s flagship initiatives to strengthen Israeli academia. Over many decades, Rothschild Fellows have demonstrated the immeasurable importance that scientific inquiry, carried out at the highest international standards, holds for Israel’s future. Every new cohort of Rothschild Fellows affords us an opportunity to meet extraordinary young scholars, each with the potential to transform their field, and even the world around us. This year we are happy to welcome five fellows from our new Physician-Researcher fellowship track – bringing the total number of annual fellows to 30, across all academic disciplines and specialties. In the following pages, you can become acquainted with your colleagues. We encourage you to reach out to past and present Rothschild Fellows – whether from your discipline or home university, or those who are familiar with your postdoc institution. The support you can offer one another is one of the programme’s many benefits. The ability to sustain top quality research in Israel must never be taken for granted. It depends on committed scholars such as yourselves building careers in Israel’s universities. Developing science to its full potential in this small country also requires a continuously engaged scientific community able to collaborate across disciplines and institutions. We are proud of the active and integral part that so many past Rothschild Fellows have played, and continue to play, in this vital enterprise.

Rothschild Fellows Colloquium 2022
About Yad Hanadiv Yad Hanadiv is dedicated to creating resources for advancing Israel as a healthy, vibrant, democratic society, committed to Jewish values and equal opportunity for the benefit of all its inhabitants. The Foundation acts on behalf of Rothschild family trusts that carry forward a 130-year tradition of philanthropy in Israel. Yad Hanadiv seeks to maintain a modest public profile and traditionally refrains from publicizing its grants. Among its better known projects are the construction of Israel’s Knesset (1966) and Supreme Court (1992) buildings, the establishment of Educational Television (1966), the Centre for Educational Technology (1974) and the Open University of Israel (1976). Current activity focuses on five core programme areas: Academic Excellence, Education, Environment, Arab Community and Early Childhood. The Foundation is also responsible for operating the Ramat Hanadiv Nature Park and Memorial Gardens, and is collaborating with the National Library of Israel towards its renewal as a 21st-century hub for on-site and online activity in a fitting and sustainable home.
About Academic Excellence Supporting international-calibre research in Israel by investing in outstanding young scholars and promising fields Funding world-class research in Israel has been a mainstay of Yad Hanadiv’s philanthropy for decades. Support is provided through fellowships, institutional support, and strategic initiatives to support high quality academic work in selected fields of study. Yad Hanadiv also works to expand opportunities for Israelis from all backgrounds to develop into exceptional scholars. One area of strategic focus is biomedical research. Yad Hanadiv collaborated in establishing the Israel Partnership for Precision Medicine (precisionmedicine.org.il) operated by the Israel Science Foundation. This

programme has already provided dozens of large-scale research grants that build on the sharing of clinical data, large-scale collection and analysis of genomic and other molecular data, and by bringing together researchers from clinical and university settings. We are also exploring ways to support the career path of Physician-Researchers, and to increase sharing of data for research purposes among medical institutions. A second area of focus is support for research and teaching in the humanities, supporting high levels of scholarship, interdisciplinary research, and closer ties between academic humanities and the cultural sector. The Arab Excellence strategy, operated jointly with Yad Hanadiv’s Arab Community team, seeks to increase opportunities for Arab students to excel in higher education and in academic and valued private sector employment. The emphasis is on improving levels of achievement in science and technology disciplines. A recently launched programme also seeks to improve access to selective academic programmes among first-generation students from the periphery.
About the Rothschild Fellowships The Rothschild Fellowship programme was established to help young scholars of outstanding academic merit and potential to advance in their respective fields. The first group of fellows was selected for the 1979/80 academic year. Nine fellowships were awarded in that first round by a committee chaired by Sir Isaiah Berlin. In 1997 the programme was divided into two categories – Rothschild Fellowships in the Natural, Exact and Life Sciences and Engineering (NELS) and Rothschild Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HS). This year a new committee was established for candidates in disciplines related

to Brain, Mind and Language (BML). The current Chair of the Natural, Exact and Life Sciences and Engineering Committee is Professor Marc Feldman (Stanford University); Professor Anthony Grafton (Princeton University) chairs the Committee for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Professor Naama Friedmann (Tel Aviv University) chairs the Committee for Brain, Mind and Language. A total of 25 fellowships were awarded in 2022 in all three categories. Another new addition is the Rothschild Fellowships for Physician-Researchers. They are designed to support research abroad for holders of MD degrees from Israeli institutions, who have outstanding research potential and enable them to advance in their respective fields and establish themselves as leading Physician-Researchers upon their return to Israel. Five such fellowships were awarded in the first round by a committee chaired by Chaim (Howard) Cedar (Hadassah Medical Centre and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem). Over 800 Rothschild Fellowships have been awarded to date. The majority of fellows have pursued their academic careers in Israel, with many going on to become leading figures in their fields. Fellows can be found in positions of academic leadership in Israel, including as university presidents, vice presidents and rectors. (A complete list of past fellows can be found on page 45.) In 2012, Yad Hanadiv initiated a tradition of Rothschild Fellows Colloquia. A colloquium takes place every three years bringing together the most recent three cohorts of Rothschild Fellows, many of whom are still pursuing postdoctoral studies. It is an opportunity for fellows to meet colleagues and present their work to senior academics in Israel. This year’s colloquium, which includes fellows from 2017–2019, was originally planned for May 2021 but was postponed due to the pandemic.
