HISTORY AND DESIGN STUDIO_ A TRAM DEPOT WORK TYPE: Teamwork; Academic LAUNCH TIME: September, 2014 PROJECT LOCATION: Turin, Italy CO-WORKER: Jassmina Kraft; Katerina Jager PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION: 33%Concept, 33%Detail Design, 100%Diagram TUTOR: Prof. Chiara Devoti, Prof.Luca Barello <luca.barello@polito.it> City Movement, the topic of History and Design Studio aims to define an aware between architecture and urban design from deeply analyzing the historical city fabric.

The site is composed by worker appartments and industrial building, shaped by the imposing presence of a tram depot dating from 1920s. The design process was carried on through consequential steps with continuous study and elaboration, giving an appropriate answer to a complex design issue.

Suspended wires that provide electricity power to trams moving through the site.

Reinforced concrete structure where trams and other vehicles are kept, cleaned and powered.

Network of rails that outline the movement of trams in and around the depot.

A series of buildings where the trams are repaired or recycled.

Circulation of pedestrian and trams are seperated for security consideration.

Since the main body is used to be the earliest urban tram depot, we determine the new complex to be an integration of tram museum and city park in momory of the post-industrial age. The remarkable structure is preserved authentically with new interior layout, meanwhile, experience-able workshops, a city memorial park, and a variety of service functions are facilitied as well.

To highlight the fundamental element that shapes the depot, the triangular circulation roof, part of the supplemental buildings should decrease. Moreover, the workshop will expand as a barrier between residence and public space; A new building will be constructed aligned the workshop, which completes the public facititie completes the public facititie’s availability.

The completely enclosed industrial block is open up to citizens. Responding to the existing tram network pattern and surrounding facilities, a series of pedestrian routes and open space are organised, to enrich the interest and urban environment

The abandoned structures houses new function: the Tram Museum. Accordingly, a multifunctional center will provide the exhibition room, experiencing room, segmentations, library, underground cinema, train cafe etc.
