Norah Owiti Summer Research 2010 summer I am biochemistry major with the intentions of going to a graduate school. Research is therefore necessary and is always recommended to get into a graduate school. I was worried in the beginning when I started applying since most of the research programs are funded by the NIH which are only available for the US citizens but I really needed the research so I went through a list of Universities whose funding were not from the NIH. I made a list of them and applied to a bout six research institutions. My worries were gone when I got an opportunity at Des Moines University at the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition where I worked with yeast cells (Saccaromyces cerevisiae). I worked with Dr. Wilson Wayne who is from Scotland and apart from learning about yeast and glycogen, I learned a lot about Scotland cultures so it was a great experience. This was a Biochemistry research bit I haven’t taken the Biochemistry class. I thought it was going to be really challenging but Dr. Wayne explained everything which made everything easy and right now in the Molecular biology class I recognize almost all the equipments and processes we are performing in the lab. I interacted with other students from other schools too. My lab partner was from Drake University and I learned a lot about Drake University and he learned about Simpson too. I am planning to apply for a research opportunity again next summer, at a different place since I really enjoyed doing the research. I would like to encourage encouraging all students who are planning to attend graduate schools to apply for these results and for the international students to whom the choices are limited.
