Summertime in Colorado is inarguably a splendid time of year. When Coloradans are not hiking, biking and exploring our beautiful state, summer’s warm, sunny afternoons; cool, breezy evenings and sensational sunsets are an invitation to gather in the backyard for a barbecue with friends or simply relax with family. In this issue of Denver Life home+design we revel in the outdoor environments of the home. Elevated Living
Proving that senior living facilities have come a long, LONG way from the sterile, uninspiring environments typically associated with them, downtown Denver’s Balfour Senior Living at Riverfront Park, which opened earlier this year, boasts an exquisite interior décor that rivals even the most luxurious country club. If the uniformed valet who whisks your car away was not enough, the entrance area and lobby of Balfour was designed to say “this is not a senior living facility.” Adjacent to the historic Moffat train depot, with its restored 24-foot ceilings, the lobby had to have drama all its own yet not overshadow the centerpiece of the project—Denver’s 1906 now fully restored train depot. Co-owner and designer, Susan Juroe was involved first-hand with Balfour’s design and incorporated many eclectic pieces from travels all over the world. balfourcare.com
Lobby The residential quality of the lobby, was achieved in part by the applied trim molding with Carlton V wallpaper and a custom designed concierge desk in black lacquer with a white Carrera writing surface. The Dorothy Draper Two Drawer Console and Curio (Kindel Furniture) in black lacquer trimmed in gold leaf houses a collection of exotic bird statues and echoes the Regency style of the concierge desk completing the residential feeling. The artwork is an abstract acrylic commissioned by Balfour with Will Day of Will Day Fine Art of Boulder, Colorado. The piece is entitled “Over The Rainbow” which the artist felt represented Balfour’s beauty and positive energy allowing resident’s to enjoy this beautiful phase of their lives.
Turtle Island Club Owner Michael Schonbrun named “Balfour” for his beloved summer camp in the Adirondaks attended by his father, uncle and cousins. Turtle Island was a well-known island nearby that triggered fond memories of fun, companionship, music, laughter and cocktails. The Clarence House vase wallpaper sets the stage for frivolity and boldness softened by the natural look of Stark’s sisal inspired axminister carpet. The turtle shells were collected in Michigan by Michael’s wife/designer Susan Juroe’s father and mounted on white linen silk by Riveting Framing. The white linen fabric on the six chairs was meant to evoke of the feeling of slipcovers in summer cottages and the Robert Allen trim has the slight feel of Indian stitching—an important part of the history and lore of summer camp in upstate New York. The Suzanne Kasler for Visual Comfort chandelier evokes the feeling of a lantern found at Camp Balfour. Other camp inspired items include a collection of whale plates, photographs, books, interesting coffee tins and the pair of turtle lamps.

Designs by Sundown This Boulder home needed to accommodate not only the homeowners, but their seven dogs. A geologist, the husband knew he wanted to incorporate his passion for fossils and rocks into the design. esigner Cassy Kicklighter Poole lived in many different places as a child. For some people, this might have been a source of hardship, but for her, it was an inspiration. “There are a couple of pretty obvious things that led me to design,” she says. Creativity has been a driving force in my life. My family moved around a ton. I lived all over the country. I was born outside of the country. The two worlds just collided.” A lifelong learner, Kicklighter Poole challenges herself to stay on top. “I certainly do a large amount of reading. I work hard to educate myself,” she says. And I’m a huge advocate for competition and sharing. It gets the juices flowing.”

Kicklighter Poole also attributes her design success to her ability to follow her instincts. She sums it up in a Pablo Picasso quotation that hangs in her office: “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” When asked if she has a favorite style or period of design, Kicklighter Poole’s answer is surprising: “If anything, that kind of goes against my philosophy. I’m stylistically open-minded. It’s what a sommelier might say about a bottle of wine.” She compares design to a puzzle where all of the pieces—clients, trends, locations— are constantly changing. Her favorite part of that puzzle? “I’m a relationship-driven person,” she says. I love bonding with clients. Every client has their own unique story, and I love building those relationships.”

or Melissa Mabe-Sabanosh, her career fulfills a lifelong passion. “I loved architecture even as a young child,” she says. I remember being 5 years old and drawing houses for people that we knew. That has always followed me.” After studying art throughout high school and college, Mabe-Sabanosh initially pursued a career in business, but she soon returned to her first love. “I realized that I needed to go back to my calling,” she says. Her background in studio art and art history informs Mabe-Sabanosh’s work as an architect, and she credits travel with sparking her creativity. “I also really get refueled by talking to other architects and designers in our community,” she adds. “Just having a dialogue. I feed off of that.” Mabe-Sabanosh says the client-architect relationship is one of her greatest inspirations. “I find creativity in talking to clients,” she says. “They will start to tell me about experiences, and that will spur something in my brain. That energy that you get between people, it makes the journey.” Maintaining that connection she feels to her clients is the basis for her design philosophy, which she sums up with the words “beauty, resonance and sincerity.” “I think it’s so beautiful that people hire someone who they trust,” she explains. “Their trust is so inspiring. It’s what gives us the freedom to create something special.”

one are the days when your grandmother’s faded, tacky wallpaper was a nightmare rather than a distant happy memory. Wallpaper is making a giant leap back into homes with classy, bold and even traditional designs including trendy styles like geometric prints and bohemian chic. If you’re not ready for a room full of patterns and prints, start small with an accent wall to add some visual interest to your space. “There is a lot of technology over the years, coming into play,” says Paula Berberian, creative director at Brewster Home Fashions. Technology allows the designer to take the design to the “next level” unlike the days of woodblock printing. Even small spaces like powder rooms can benefit from having large, bold patterns draped on the walls, creating the illusion of more space. How long this trend will stick around remains to be seen. In Living Color Engage the emotions and set the tone of your home with this year’s cool and earthy-inspired hues. By Julie Bielenberg

here is an entire industry dedicated solely to predicting color trends each year. Pantone is at the forefront, but there are other stars, both international and local, that share a passion for color forecasting. Color is important to humans. It affects moods, productivity, sleep patterns and so much more that is essential to our daily lives. Throughout every generation and era, there have been distinct colors associated with time, status and ethnicity. Companies now use these hues and hope to be on the cusp of an emerging color trend when they roll out new products and brands. In addition to influencing fashion and beauty trends, color is at the core of most home décor styles, and a color choice can make or break it. Sherwin-Williams’ 2015 color of the year, Coral Reef (SW 6606), is described as an uplifting, vivacious hue with floral notes that are a mélange of pink, orange and red. Any interior designer can tell you that a color immediately speaks to emotions the moment someone enters a space. That’s why you don’t see many magenta kitchens, black bedrooms or tangerine hallways. You can bet that the colors seen sashaying down the fashion runways will inevitably begin showing up in home accents, paint and accessories. According to Pantone, this summer is trending toward the cooler and softer side of the color spectrum with “understated brights, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals."

Voyage From space tourism to undersea resorts, the sci-fi dreams of past decades are more viable than ever. The Voyage palette from Sherwin-Williams, looks to these outer limits, featuring hues imagined while emerging from the water into the atmosphere—undersea teal, bright green kelp, light watery blue and deep space purple. “The colors of Voyage are supernatural and magical. The palette is driven by unusual atmospheric events including a decade-best aurora borealis, keeping our eyes focused on the heavens,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

Beiges, taupe and varying degrees of white dominate the color palettes of most homes, with the only spark of color often being reserved for an occasional den, bathroom, child’s bedroom or basement space. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to spread the color love to other elements of your home. You can still start with a simple, neutral color. But don’t go crazy, interior designers advise. You can slowly integrate color into your home with any of the cooler, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals that are trending this summer; it just needs to be clean and pleasing for your pursuit. “In regards to styling a living space; the brighter the better. My style starts with a bright, blank slate, such as white or light gray, a natural element like wood floors or concrete, and then adding in your favorite block of color,” says color addict Laura Shackles, owner of Denver-based Blush and Bay florals (blushandbay.com). “Different patterns and textures are a great way to incorporate like colors but still differentiate them from each other and keep your space exciting. If you love a wide array of colors like me, you can still pair them together and change them out as trends evolve. The key is to make sure they are not equal. Think: a lot of pinks and oranges with a tiny touch of teal.” [ 41 ]
Chrysalis As technology rushes ahead, the colors of Chrysalis from Sherwin-Williams offer a calm oasis—a place to pause and find balance. Reclaiming the Home Colorado artists are reinventing eco-friendly furniture from repurposed material. By Kaleigh Lawson

magine an old weather-beaten snow fence transformed into a beautiful dining room table, beetle kill pine turned into a sturdy chair or a decommissioned wine barrel converted into barstools. Such furnishings, made from reclaimed and recycled pieces are not only sustainable, they’re also stylish and full of character and are definitely making appearances in Colorado homes. Forget “recycled.” Today’s eco-friendly furniture is “upcycled.” Rocky Mountain Table Company (RMTC), a Denver-based business specializing in handcrafted tables, seating and storage units from reclaimed materials since 2005, is changing the way we look at old wood planks from decommissioned structures or trees brought down by destructive pine beetles. In recent years, reclaimed materials in homes and restaurants alike have increased in popularity and RMTC is largely involved in this salvaging trend. Their pieces are truly works of functional art. “Our furniture is very transitional which means we have pieces that fit in many environments. Therefore we work with a wide customer range from new homeowners all the way up to executive level office and conference customers,” says owner Donnie Criswell. In Colorado, not only is reclaimed furniture a trend, but the materials salvaged are a trend of their own. “Trends that dlmhomeanddesign.com
we see (and love) are the mix of reclaimed wood with other architectural elements like metal and steel,” says Criswell. In addition to beetle kill pine, also widespread in many Colorado homes are boxcar floor planks and Wyoming snow fencing found at Cherry Creek’s Revampt—an eclectic furniture shop that works with artists to create wonderfully unique upcycled furnishings and accessories from reclaimed, recycled and repurposed materials. Each material offers a one-of-a-kind look. “You can see the character and history behind it,” says founder Daniel Louis, who opened Revampt in 2010. The creative artists behind the products at Revampt give would-be trash, including bicycle parts, tin cans, recycled beer bottles and scrap wood, a new lease on life in the form of unique furniture and accessories that are just as stylish and whimsical as they are functional. Yet, reclaimed materials are not solely limited to old barn wood floors and torn-down fences— artist and designer Jessica Schimpf, completely self-taught in the discipline of glassblowing, utilizes recycled glass, organic plants and postconsumer packaging to create sustainable artwork. Her company, Mantra Glass Art produces 100 percent recycled hand-blown glass products. “I absolutely loved seeing my first test pieces with recycled color. It’s never been done before; [ 42 ]

most soft-glass artists have this perception that the little imperfections (air bubbles, banding and imperfect colors) made from recycled glass are not as beautiful as completely clear non-recycled glass art. That’s where I saw a world of opportunity,” says Schimpf. “Not only is it good for our environment, the pieces are 100 percent one-of-a-kind and could never be reproduced exactly the same, inherently making the work more exclusive and extremely valuable.” Schimpf’s work, along with that of other talented local artists, can be found at Reclaimed West—a Colorado-based company providing high quality reclaimed building materials, furniture and fine artwork all created by local artists from the Rocky Mountain Region. “Contextual modernism” is how architect E. J. Meade, a principal at Arch11 in Boulder, describes 303 Canyon, a deeply custom living solution that reconceives the traditional single family lot as a setting for thoughtful interaction, privacy and beauty. Two couples, repeat clients of Arch11 looking to downsize, found a 9,800-square-foot lot that was zoned for three units, rare in West Boulder. They wanted something more interesting than simply lining up three townhouses, and imagined a communal scenario in which they could live individually, yet in a community. They were joined by an Internet executive whose demanding job required frequent travel. A fan of Arch11’s work, she wanted in on the project, but this was more than a simple real estate transaction. The five would-be cohabitants met over wine, and a sophisticated 21st century commune took shape. Meade and his team took this unique set of circumstances and created an innovative, trans-
formative (and award-winning) dwelling. “Our challenge was to configure a single family lot into three living zones that have privacy and a sense of community, that have private indoor and outdoor space as well as shared outdoor space,” he says. “We had three clients with individual needs. We sculpted a cohesive exterior but defined the interiors to be specific to how they live.” Meade and the owners looked not only to how the dwelling would live within its context, but how it could add to it. “Our goal was to address the site and fit into the western part of town. We also wanted to set a pattern for better land use for a changing set of needs and wants, not only for where these clients are in their lives, but where our culture is,” Meade explains. Every physical boundary pushes against the limits of Boulder’s building code, in height and footprint. The three individual two-story units are sited so that each is flooded with sunlight and has spectacular views of the iconic Flatirons to the [continued on page 51]

west along with dramatic corner windows. One 1,500-square-foot unit stands alone across a common garden and outdoor kitchen area from the other slightly larger attached units. Parking, storage and mechanical equipment are located beneath the living and garden spaces to maximize the building area and meet Boulder’s stringent requirements of a 50-50 floor area-to-site ratio. The units sit in a neighborhood of single family homes ranging from low-slung midcenturies to Victorian miner’s cottages, and utilize all of its allowable footprint, but it does not feel like a behemoth straining at its setbacks. Breaking up the masses and incorporating a variety of materials brought the experience of the building down in scale. One has the sense of being in a garden at 303 Canyon, but it is honest in its urban setting, and provides an elegant transition from the busy thoroughfare to the peaceful neighborhood. “The longtime neighbors get it,” Meade says. Did Meade find any surprises in the finished dwelling? “The Flatirons through the windows are even more magical than we imagined,” he says.

Modern Classic The use of mixed materials such as steel and wood throughout the home creates a classic aesthetic with a modern twist.
make an entrance An 11-foot unsupported overhang over the front porch seems to float effortlessly amongst the Roman bricks that compose the exterior façade.
With its generous use of horizontal lines and bands of windows spanning the periphery, along with its finely edited appearance, this modern prairie-style structure in Washington Park has a historical backbone: Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Chicago-built Frederick C. Robie House. While this home has a swath of uniqueness, the builder, Bryan Bozeman of Stone Cloud Construction, a boutique real estate, architectural design-build firm in Denver, went to great lengths to mirror some original elements of the Robie House built in 1910. For instance, he knew that the iconic brick façade was something to be carried over into the new design concept. “I was told by the main brick supplier in town that I would not be [ 53 ]

able to find the long, skinny Roman brick anymore,” Bozeman says. After three months of searching, he was able to locate the brick in Kansas, and created a custom color blend using the hard-to-find brick. He also incorporated red vertical and gray horizontal mortar joints as a nod to Wright’s original project. Bozeman configured the blueprints to allow the home’s exterior elements to be carried indoors, and then back out again through the backyard. The continuation of material, texture and color creates a sense of openness that translates the sharper modern lines into a welcoming environment. During the framing stage, the design caught the eye of Susan Schwab. A designer and co-owner of design firm Company KD LLC, she bought the home and began lending her expert eye to the aesthetic. Schwab leans toward classic design and uses modern punches to create an eclectic mixture in her living spaces. When she came on board the project, the visions of both she and Bozeman quickly aligned. “I wanted the interior to flow from the outside in, and inside out,” Schwab says. The organic materials are repeated throughout the home, contributing to the livability of the flowing floor plan. The front of the home employs a cedar tongueand-groove soffit that Bozeman carried into the foyer, immediately inviting guests in. With a grand collection of art curated over many years, Schwab took special care in designing showplaces for her pieces. When Jennifer Fronk’s father planted young trees around their new home in Greenwood Village some 40 years ago, she never dreamed she would one day build another house among those same trees. But that is exactly what she and her husband, Rudi, did. After living in Canada for a number of years, they returned to Denver and looked for a home. The timing was right and in 2008, Fronk, the youngest of four children, and Rudi purchased the home she grew up in from her parents. “I remember my dad planting the Ponderosa pines,” Fronk says. “They were tiny little pines in coffee cans and cost 50 cents each.” The Fronks were able to keep every one of the original Ponderosa pines and most of the important trees on the property when they rebuilt the house. In thinking about the home and the family, several priorities bubbled to the top of their list. They wanted to expand the home yet keep the views of the Front Range and—of course—the trees. The feel of the home and the layout were [ 59 ]
also important to them, as were the tennis court and swimming pool. “We wanted to have our siblings and families here for holidays, to make it a gathering place where everyone could feel they were home, again,” Fronk says. “We wanted it to be an easy, gracious home, and not at all pretentious. We wanted a low profile.” Who better to enlist on their project than the architect of the original house, Bill Wunderlich? “The original house was one of my first residential projects as an architect,” says Wunderlich, principal of Wunderlich Design. The plan to expand the existing ’60s ranch was scrapped right up front. It turned out the house was structurally inadequate to accommodate a second story. “Jennifer pretty much gave me free rein,” the architect says. “Of course, they told me the areas and rooms they wanted.” Wunderlich kept the location of the rooms in the house, the tennis court and the swimming pool similar, creating a sense of continuity. Knowing the house and property was not the only leg-up this team had. “We had an advantage with the outdoors. We were able to save most of the trees and original footprint,” Wunderlich says. “The house looks like it’s always been there. It has a sense of permanency.” Wunderlich looked for every opportunity he could find to integrate the indoors and outdoors, and the four seasons room may be the best example. “When the pocket doors are open, you don’t have any walls,” he says. “It is totally open air.” Another set of doors allows the Fronks to close off the room from the kitchen. Patios are found at every turn and level, each capitalizing on the views and spaces of the house. The interior space throughout the home is arranged to play up the indoor-outdoor design. The open, spacious arrangement of the furnishings also lends itself to being opened up to the outdoor spaces. Materials such as carrera marble, stained glass, exquisite woodwork, interesting light fixtures and barrel vault ceilings are hallmarks of the house. “I call the hall light fixtures ‘house jewelry’,” Fronk says. When it came to making a home for her jewelry and accessories, she polled her friends and asked them what one thing they would want in a fantasy closet. One friend suggested a three-way mirror with wing panels that fold in. Another came up with a scarf island with shallow drawers such as what you might find in an exclusive boutique. “Now, whenever I am in my closet, I remember who gave me which idea for features in my closet,” she adds. Fronk claims a lifelong love of design, but little formal training. She recruited her childhood friend, Nancy Holliday of NPH Design in Denver, to help her. “I personally designed about 80 percent of the house, and picked every quarter inch of trim myself,” Fronk says. That attention to detail and the emphasis on function is evident in the architectural design as well as the interiors. The new home makes a bold, creative statement, yet retains the feel of the first home. Today, Fronk is just as much at home as she was when her father planted Ponderosa pines out of a coffee can.

Growing up in a home surrounded by good design, designer Beverly Nichols developed an appreciation for gracious interiors at an early age. When she discovered this gray-shingled home in Aspen, it immediately piqued her design instincts. Featuring neither the traditional mountain style nor a highly modern hard-edged construction; the exterior of the abode embraced a country elegance that was too hard to ignore. Nichols, the home’s designer, was so struck by its style that she purchased the home soon after viewing it. Inside, the design has a life of its own, filled with layer upon layer of warm, rich antique pine wood. A substantial floating wooden staircase connects the three stories, created in pine to harmonize with the interiors. The main floor’s living spaces are comfortable and inviting, created in the home’s long, narrow footprint. Fabrics and finishes in russet, tan and khaki blend seamlessly with the California Mission-style architecture throughout the home. An elegant dining room features a large trestle table that has been in the Nichols family for more than 25 years. To ensure the piece fit effortlessly into the space, she had its new walnut top custom designed. The generous double-height windows fill the interior with sunlight. The entirety of the lower area is designed to accommodate guests, but by creating independent groupings of seating areas, it’s still highly livable when there are no weekend visitors. quiet hideaway “This is my favorite room,” says designer and homeowner Beverly Nichols. “It reminds me of a robber baron’s New York lake house.” The rich wood is balanced by crisp pops of white, a cowhide rug and a light blue painted ceiling.
accommodate a couple, yet comfortably sleeps six grandkids. Its Sunbrella fabrics ensure the furniture is not only bright and cheerful, but durable and long-lasting. A Dash and Albert indoor-outdoor rug balances the space. Beautiful brick floors run through the lower level, which houses a large sitting room, living room with television, four bedrooms, four baths, a wine cellar and the laundry room. The space is divided by Venetian plaster walls that feature arched passageways, and the arches are repeated in each of the bedrooms to create a sense of continuity. The use of window wells allows the lower level to feel bright and airy, even though it is a subsurface level. On the third floor, the master suite includes two nooks that serve as offices, a sitting room and a rooftop deck. It is the perfect, private respite when the home is full with Nichols’ large extended family. With so many living, sitting and reading areas peppered throughout the home’s square footage, it’s as if every corner of the design is asking to be enjoyed. Overall, the design is immensely comfortable, but each of the nooks are rich with their own style and character. From iconic animal hide rugs and buttery leathers to contemporary papier-mâché deer heads from Paris, the mix of Nichols’ novel and traditional style sets an alluring stage for entertaining her family and friends. dlmhomeanddesign.com

Amenities and Activities Herman found his home on the golf course. Las Campanas has two Jack Nicklaus courses— Sunrise and Sunset—as well as a 19-acre practice facility. “The golf programming at Las Campanas has something for everyone, from championship golf to hit and giggle golf, which is more about the libations than golf,” Epstein says. The golf courses are part of The Club, memberowned activities, which include an equestrian center with boarding of up to 90 horses, a 32,000square-foot indoor hall, outdoor rings and 68,000 acres of open land and trails. Also included is a fitness and tennis center that features 35 classes per week, workout space, pool and tennis, as well as spa and personal care services. For dining, Las Campanas has three options— the main dining room at The Hacienda, a casual eatery called the Log Cabin and the Sunrise Spa Café for breakfast and lunch. hile walking the plaza one day on vacation, Roger and Gina Grose realized they didn’t want their love affair with Santa Fe to end. After a quick Google search, they found the Fairmont’s El Corazon nearby. Within a month of their first visit, they brought friends along to “try to find something wrong with the place. They couldn’t find anything,” says Roger. “It’s gated and close to the plaza and has fantastic restaurants.” Services include full concierge with discounts at local restaurants and galleries, pre-arrival groceries and long-term storage for sports gear. Though the Groses bought a one-eighth fractional ownership at El Corazon in Santa Fe (with four dedicated weeks), they actually got more than they bargained for. Mix It Up Playing with patterns, mixing materials and pops of color are topping this year’s tile trends. By Rose Maxwell
T
his year’s tile styles are showing up in all different shapes, sizes and materials… and blue is the new neutral. “Rooms with a neutral color scheme are timeless and elegant, and in a permanent tile installation many people feel safer picking something that feels familiar to them. However, I must admit that after seeing so many neutral spaces, it is refreshing that this year we have seen more people willing to use tile to add pops of color to their homes,” says Kate Sterling, tile expert and head of marketing and design at AKDO, a tile brand known for luxury stones, tiles, mosaics and custom designs. “While color may feel risky to some, there are many colors such as blues and greens that can act as neutrals because we are used to seeing them everywhere in nature and therefore they don’t shock the eye.” But color isn’t the only thing shaking up the tile world—texture, the use of mixed materials and metal accents incorporated into delicate designs are also hot. “Texture is a huge trend in the tile world right now, because monotone surfaces with subtle details create a sophisticated and refined look,” Sterling says. “I am seeing an emergence of tile lines that come in a blend of different textures and patterns, which is great because from afar you see a field of color, but up close each tile is special.” While the trend in mixing materials such as glass and stone in mosaics, remains popular for bath and kitchen applications, a combination of other materials including ceramic, wood and metals is another booming trend this year. Porcelanosa, a tile, kitchen, bath and hardwood company specializing in large size wall tiles, exhibits this trend through its Barcelona Collection—think hydraulic tiles for walls and floors featuring geometric sequences. And in addition to new shapes, including hexagons and arabesque, larger size tiles as well as 3-D wall tiles are definitely popular in 2015, says Vicki Peterson, design specialist at CAPCO Tile & Stone. “Another up and coming trend that is all over Europe right now is 2cm porcelain pavers,” she says.

Mix & Match A simple way to add texture to your design is to mix matte and glossy material.
