FALL 2021

Building Community

FROM

PRESIDENT Dear De La Salle Community: You know, as well as I do, De La Salle High School is an exceptional place where our young men are loved, guided, and instructed. And not even a global pandemic could stop this community from living out that call from our mission. While I was not yet at De La Salle, the 2020-21 school year saw this community, and indeed our world, stretched in unimaginable ways. In our third school year impacted by this pandemic, I have been impressed by how our students, staff, and community responded. The hard work, dedication, and creativity of the De La Salle community is inspiring. We understand that actions matter more than words so that we can best reach each of the young men entrusted to our care. The faculty and staff did a tremendous lift to be the first school in the area to bring its students back in partnership with Carondelet.

And how did we do that? In community. Our Founder wrote, “Union in a community is a precious gem, which is why the Lord so often recommended it to His apostles before he died. If we lose this, we lose everything. Preserve it with care, therefore, if you want your community to survive (Meditations of St. John Baptist De La Salle 91.2).” Rooted in our Lasallian Catholic identity, De La Salle continues to find ways to create community. We remain a beacon for goodness in a world desperately in need of the young men who graduate from here and become difference makers in their community. This Union magazine, our Annual Report edition, illustrates how much building community requires our full heart, and that means you, too. I am deeply grateful to those individuals listed in our Honor Roll of Donors, our investors, who give philanthropically so we can ensure that we meet our mission. In fact, we awarded $4.1 million in tuition assistance to families in need and serve more than 60 Bishop Cummins Scholars—the largest in our school’s history. You will also notice stories about how we have built community and our commitment to continuing to do so. Thank you for the honor and privilege to serve the De La Salle community as your President. I look forward to getting to know many more of you and to watching our community thrive. Respectfully yours,

David J. Holquin President

The School Seal The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

Graduation 2021

During much of the 2020-21 school year, most De La Salle students were in a hybrid format for classes, but close to 75 percent of the students were on-campus daily to close the year. As May approached, it was still up in the air as to how graduation would look for the Class of 2021. After much thought and consideration, the De La Salle administration was thrilled to be able to host an on-campus graduation. A traditional outside graduation returned but the location was different, as a larger venue was needed. With distance requirements still in effect, the school moved the Class of 2021 Commencement Ceremony from the Quad to the football field to accommodate the 248 members of the graduation class and their families. With the return to a standard graduation ceremony, Class of 2021 heard speeches from retiring President Mark DeMarco ’78 and Vice President for Academic Life Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, then student speeches from Salutatorian Cyril Joseph and Valedictorian Jose Angelo Grajeda. After the

four speeches, members of the graduating class were presented with the Academic Department Awards and Distinguished Graduation Award, which normally would be announced at the school’s Senior Presentation. Lastly, all 248 members of the Class of 2021 heard their names called and received applause as they walked across the stage to receive their diploma from Dr. Alumbaugh. In the pages to follow, you will see pictures from the event, along with excerpts from the speeches from Mark DeMarco ’78, Dr. Alumbaugh, Cyril Joseph, and Jose Angelo Grajeda. Graduation 2021 We as a school believe that if we can show you that we love “ you, you can learn anything, and you could strive at De La Salle. It is a good education technique. But it is more than that. It is a genuine response to the reality of your infinite value in the eyes of God. We did not invent the idea of loving you; God loves you, and we are just following His lead. As it says in the First Letter of John Chapter 4 – Whoever does not love does not love God, because God is Love. We strived to love you and only you – graduates – and parents – will know if we were successful. It is my sincere hope that you have felt loved while you have been here – I know this has been difficult given the circumstances of the past year, but believe me, the administration, teachers, staff, and your coaches did all they could to deliver on our Mission as a school.

Sacrifice cannot be isolated from that which it makes possible: “ rebirth. Mr. Wickboldt summarized the important tension between the two: “The world’s most beautiful things are created through dramatic and destructive processes. Diamonds can only be made through intense heat and pressure. Mountains are created through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. No one should ever convince you that the sacrifices you have been asked to make were easy and did not come with a significant cost. No one should ever convince you that you have not just experienced a year that was filled with dramatic processes. But it is crucially important to remember that the way you have made those sacrifices, the way you made them holy, the narratives you have created, ALL account for your metamorphosis in this moment and have truly defined your character. You have embodied in significant ways the lessons that Jesus bequeathed us: namely the values of sacrifice, love, compassion, service, courage, rebirth. Graduation 2021 I want to say thank you to De La Salle High “ School, for bringing together an amazing group of young men, and cultivating within us that breath of love, compassion, and faith, from the very beginning. Today, I’m sure we all feel God’s Holy presence amongst ourselves. Our teachers, staff, parents, and families supported us through thick and thin, even in times when it didn’t seem like we wanted help. To our graduating class, we ought to commend ourselves, for never giving up on one another. For encouraging each other’s passions. For constantly pushing one another to become better Men of Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship. Jose Angelo Grajeda ‘21 – Valedictorian From the Class of 2021 Graduation Speech

So as I stand here before you, I can look and “ still see that message written upon the entrance of De La Salle. The school’s seal is surrounded by the chain. As our retreats have taught us before, we are the individual links that chain this community founded on virtue together. So that when we go out into this world, we still will carry the values along with the memories of this brotherhood as this chain is the type that is unbreakable. And we reflect on our school’s motto “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” Now our one goal is to serve. Whether it’s to serve those in your community or those outside of your community. We are called upon one thing to do. Isaiah 6:8 reads; Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me. Your education has been filled with a Christian Brothers’ and Catholic background, (Christian Brothers High School, Saint Mary’s College, and Notre Dame), how has Lasallian and Catholic education shaped you as an individual? Catholic schools for centuries have been the nexus of a well-rounded and whole hearted education that feeds the mind, body, and soul. And Lasallian education, in particular, is rooted in the belief that our starting point is relational. We are at our best in relationship with our students, staff, and parents. Going deeper, the De La Salle Christian Brothers’ mission challenges me daily to make sure that every student feels welcomed, belongs, and reaches his or her (given we do serve our Carondelet sisters) greatest potential. I received that in my schooling and I approach my work with a spirit of faith and zeal to do for others what was done for me. I am who I am and I do what I do because of the schools and educators who impacted me. That is never taken for granted. Having grown up with a Lasallian education, and serving as president at your second Lasallian school, why is working at a Lasallian school important to you? The values instilled through Lasallian education are needed more today than ever. And because of that, I feel this hunger to be interested in learning about and serving others. Fredrick Buechner has said our vocation is where your heart’s deep gladness, and the world’s deep need meet. And the maxim from the Gospel that to whom much is given, much is required rings true for me, too. Call me crazy, but I take all of that seriously and feel like if I don’t give back, it was as if I never understood what my many mentors did for me. As I was graduating from college I had five life plans devised, and initially tried life plan A which was to make a lot of money in business, retire early, and then teach for the rest of my life. It lasted one year and I knew I was not where God wanted me. It is funny how sometimes the hardest part of listening is in heeding what we hear. When I did, my life has never been better. What is your overall vision for De La Salle High School? I look forward to working collaboratively with the community to discern the path for how De La Salle can continue to develop men of faith, integrity, and scholarship by being a national leader in how to educate and reach boys. We already do amazing things, and my task is to help discern where we can grow and improve while never losing sight of our mission which distinguishes us. I do believe that we already have so much going on at Winton Drive that my biggest opportunity is in simply sharing the story of De La Salle near and far. In other words, how do we amplify and embrace our tradition and success as we live it out in 2021 and beyond?

at home with the people I love, probably because my day job requires me to be present to, and with, a lot of people. What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time? My leisure time is spent with people I love, enjoying life. I have such an amazing life and I feel blessed everyday with where I work and live. I will say I prefer the simple things in life: movie nights at home, pizza from our Ooni pizza oven, a good meal with a Manhattan to start. Half Moon Bay, Carmel, and Disneyland are happy places for our family.

How involved do you plan to be with campus and student activities, and how visible do you plan to be with the students on a regular basis? I set aside time weekly to visit classrooms, watch activities, and walk the campus. I am signed up to participate and lead on retreats and Kairos. As any administrator will tell you, when I am having a rough day, just being with the students makes all the difference. Their spirit and energy is infectious and the joy our educators have inside and outside of the classroom is palpable. My job is to be inwardly grounded while being outwardly focused. What program or programs at De La Salle are you most interested in learning more about? Our Bishop Cummins Program is central to our mission as a Lasallian school, yet so are they all. Whether it is athletics or Mock Trial, Kairos or clubs, there is so much that De La Salle offers. I have been heartened by the passion and commitment of our students, staff, parents, and community. Folks are all in here, and want to see everything and everyone excel. There is a devotion to De La Salle which makes everything we do here successful and I can’t wait to see even more.

necessitates distance, but that is not who we are as a Lasallian Catholic school. Things like the Taste of De La Salle or the homecoming dance or Friday night football games have new significance since a near two-year absence. I have been gratified and humbled by the great lengths our educators have gone to make these events happen. And so we have a sacred privilege to build community that lasts a lifetime. What are some fun facts that our community should know about you? I love golf, but don’t play enough to be any good at it. We purchased a Peloton right as the pandemic started and I have not missed a day since—ask my wife, I never thought I would use it! Also, I don’t have a lot of “favorites”: food, movies, etc. but certainly enjoy a wonderful life. I prefer a quiet night

What is daily life like for the Holquin family? With a sixth grader (Jackson), a second grader (Sloane), and my wife Danielle who commutes to San Jose, life is filled with drop offs, pickups, soccer practice, golf, playing before or after homework, and trying to always have dinner together around the table. Why is Family so important to you? I grew up learning that faith and family were the most important things and everything else was secondary. I would credit my parents (Nicholas and Julia) and my maternal grandparents (Ray and Jennie Basquez) with instilling that in me. My primary vocation is as a husband and father, and that is what my first calling is. It makes it easier to put into practice when I love my wife and kids as much as I do.

How do we re-build community at De La Salle after a year of being in a pandemic? It is all about being intentional. Having community at the forefront of our mind is critical. So is being creative. The pandemic FALL 2021

We’re OnBoard! De La Salle Incorporates OnBoard! Student Leaders In the Spring of 2020, as the pandemic continued and De La Salle students and teachers were adapting to the reality of full online learning, thinking and planning began for the incoming class of new students. How would new students bond with their new high school if virtual? What impact would positively connected students have on long-term retention and academic success? The dependability of prospective students being able to be “Spartans for a Day”, coming to plays and athletic events, and experiencing the vibrancy and energy of the De La Salle community was gone. How was the school going to engage and connect a new class of Spartans given the constraints of the pandemic?

The school’s newly minted Director of Campus Life and Culture, Michael Aquino, reached out to some enthusiastic colleagues: counselor Lindsay Melaas, assistant librarian Brooke Heskett, activity director/English teacher and coach Greg Brown-Davis, teacher and coach Terry Eidson, and theater director Meredith Barnidge to brainstorm and investigate ways of orienting and welcoming new high school students, virtually. Mr. Aquino leaned on his past experience as Vice Principal of Admissions at Moreau Catholic High School where he revamped the existing orientation program by implementing Link Crew. Link Crew is a program of the Boomerang Project, former Santa Cruz educators specializing in school transition programming. After successfully implementing Link Crew at Moreau Catholic, Mike became a staff coach for the Boomerang Project travelling around the country and Canada training other administrators and teachers. Using his connections and knowledge gained from his work, he and his collaborators were trained in June of 2020 in the Boomerang Project’s virtual mash-up of Link Crew: OnBoard! Like Link Crew, OnBoard! is a peer-mentor model of orientation; where specially selected and trained older students, who represent the diversity of experiences in the school, serve as “big brothers” in leading a small group of ninth grade and transfer students through orientation. They assist the students in making positive and ongoing connections with older students, other new students in their group, and the culture of the school. The main goal of the program is to create and reinforce a positive and inclusive school culture where everyone belongs and is able to find a place. The key focus of the leadership training is creating positive energy and connections while reinforcing the existing hard work of the teachers and staff at De La Salle. Not only does the program seek to improve and enhance the experience of incoming students – but this has cascading impacts with student retention, in the creation of a positive/welcoming campus culture, and improving overall student success at the school. With Brooke Heskett and Lindsay Melaas taking the lead as head coordinators, the group began the quick turnaround of training themselves as adult coordinators, planning, selecting, and training leaders, and implementing an entirely new program from June to August 2020. Over 60 juniors and seniors answered the call – jumping in, fully committed to the challenge of making positive connections with younger students and helping to build culture – all while virtual. They took on the challenge of training and connecting, while managing the technology of a virtual orientation of more than 300 students and leaders in one day! On August 11, 2020, De La Salle welcomed its incoming class of 2024 through an entirely virtual orientation.

OnBoard! Student Leaders waiting to greet their fellow Spartans at Freshman Orientation.

As the 2020-21 year unfolded, De La Salle was able to move to a hybrid model of instruction for many students. OnBoard! Leaders and groups continued to meet virtually and in-person for follow-ups to connect students to clubs, for tutoring or academic support, or just to see how the new students were navigating De La Salle. Some returned to serve as Freshman Retreat Leaders for their students in October.

their groups – creating genuine connections, helping new students find their way, and getting everything set for a successful first day of classes. OnBoard! Leaders continue to meet and connect with their groups – hosting “check-in” lunches, connecting struggling students to resources, and helping to “build back better” the Spartan Brotherhood that was disconnected and scattered during the past 18 months.

As the spring of 2021 rolled around, the group again began to plan for the incoming Class of 2025. With the prospect and hope of a full return to in-person instruction, it was clear there would need to be an entire re-tooling and retraining of the adults and the program. Using knowledge gained from the year, along with generous borrowing from the Link Crew playbook, the intrepid coordinators created a whole new OnBoard! 2.0 program that they could roll out in-person. Teacher Corey Kelly, joined the adult coordinators as Greg Brown-Davis took on more coaching responsibilities. New students were given an entire day for Orientation themselves – to meet and bond with their leaders and groups, pick up books, get their photo IDs, go through Tech Check, and get a campus tour.

Looking ahead, the Coordinator team of Brooke Heskett, Lindsay Melaas, Meredith Barnidge, Terry Eidson, Corey Kelly, and Mike Aquino continue to plan ongoing events for OnBoard! and look forward to more training and refinement to make the program an institutional staple and cornerstone of De La Salle culture-building.

Again, more than 60 enthusiastic junior and senior Spartans stepped up to act as “big brothers” and underwent two full days of summer training to prepare them for De La Salle’s revamped Orientation Day. On August 9, 2021 OnBoard! Leaders spent an entire day with

OnBoard Leaders Meredith Barnidge, Michael Aquino, Greg Brown-Davis, Brooke Haskett, Lindsay Melaas, and Thomas Wickboldt on a zoom meeting leading up to Freshman Orientation.

Brother Carter

Living Lasallian Charism Schools have always been powerful places in Brother Carter Powers’ life. Places where people pushed him to be better, and where he is now helping students to be better. The realization that schools are a catalyst for personal transformation started for Brother Carter in a Catholic middle school, where an enthusiastic nun who was his English teacher encouraged him to be the best version of himself. It continued in high school, where his cross country coach became a father figure and mentor after the death of Brother Carter’s father during his freshman year. “As I was graduating high school, I realized that teachers played a huge role in my life,” says Brother Carter, who is now a Religious Studies teacher and an assistant cross country coach at De La Salle. “I respected them. I looked up to them. I wanted to give to others what they gave to me in terms of their love, their mentorship, their faith, their passion for education.” His post-high school journey led him to coaching at a Jesuit High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was able to not only guide and mentor students entrusted to him but also to synthesize his Catholic faith with his life. When he later got a job at Cathedral High, a Christian Brothers school in El Paso, Texas, he was impressed by the Brothers’ zeal, their commitment to faith and their dedication to students, and decided that he wanted to join in their mission as a Christian Brother. “I wanted to be a Brother because I wanted to find out a way to live the gospel that I felt was true to who I was, and I saw that in the Lasallian charism, and I saw that in all the Brothers I met,” says Brother Carter, who is now a Postulant on his way to eventual studies in the Novitiate and later, lifetime vows as a Brother. So when he was 21, in early 2020 before the pandemic began, he took the first step, becoming an Aspirant. He researched De La Salle High School, which he had never heard of, and he also learned that because he would be the only Brother at the school, he would live in a nearby Christian Brothers community at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga.

“As our numbers get lower, you’re going to have to start commuting to places to do ministry, and you’re going to have to be the only Brother in the school, and you’re going to have to realize what kind of responsibilities and expectations come along with that,” Brother Carter says. “I thought this was going to be a great way to test out how much this charism really means to me.” Still, as he journeyed west to California, his nerves rattled him, until he stopped at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. He went to the chapel for evening prayer, and the prayer book he was handed opened to a memorial card for the legendary Brother Lawrence Allen, a beloved De La Salle figure who he had read about in “When the Game Stands Tall” while researching the school.

athletic competition,” says De La Salle chaplain Fr. LaSalle Hallissey, O.P., and alumnus from the first graduating class in 1969. Brother Carter says that he receives as well as gives instruction. “I learn every day from students,” he continued. “At the end of the day, if you’re a good teacher the students are the ones giving the lesson.” And, he says, he learns from the lay teachers, many of them De La Salle graduates, what it means to be a Lasallian in the classroom.

“I get goosebumps thinking about it,” Brother Carter says. “I took this as a sign – ‘you’re going to the right place.’ That was God saying, ‘I’m going to take care of you. I understand where you’re going and I want you to be there.’”

“It’s really interesting – the Brothers community (at St. Mary’s College) is teaching me what it means to be a Brother in community, and they’re supporting me so that when I come here, I’m able to recognize what the teachers are doing in the classroom that’s Lasallian.”

It wasn’t easy at first, with the Coronavirus shutting down in-person learning in mid-March 2020, and then going to a hybrid system in the 2020-21 school year. He first served in the Learning Center, did longterm substitute teaching and was an in-class facilitator for a teacher who remained in a remote capacity once in-person classes resumed. He now is a faculty member teaching four Religious Studies classes for freshmen, a class on spiritual journey, and he is an assistant cross country coach. His enthusiasm, his ready laugh, and his zeal for the community are evident throughout the campus.

Brother Carter knows it’s beneficial for De La Salle to have a Brother on campus again as a living symbol of the Lasallian charism, but he also knows that he will have to leave when he enters the Novitiate, a one-year seminary program, which will be followed by five to seven years of annual vows before taking final vows, the lifetime commitment to being a Christian Brother. He also knows that someday he may prove to be the inspiration for a De La Salle student considering joining the Christian Brothers. What would he tell such a student?

“With a warm and welcoming smile, Brother Carter pays close attention to the young men entrusted to his care and does what he can to help them succeed, both in learning the basic concepts of our Catholic faith and in achieving their best possible times running at an

“I’d ask him if you want to put yourself in the position to be the best Catholic, the best teacher, and the best person you could be. Then I would highly encourage a life in the Brothers, because there are nonstop opportunities to grow.”

2021 Lasallian Educator of the Year

Annemarie Talmadge At the 2021 Saint La Salle Liturgy, Vice President for Academic Life, Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, had the privilege of honoring an educator who is chosen by his or her peers to receive a very special award, the Lasallian Educator of the Year Award. Before making the announcement to the entire faculty and staff of De La Salle, Dr. Alumbaugh said, “Each year it is both a challenge and a blessing to choose the Lasallian Educator of the Year, especially among so many dedicated faculty members. The commitment, respect, and love our faculty gives to our students is the same they show one another.” Then, Dr. Alumbaugh announced that Social Studies Department Chair, Mrs. Annemarie Talmadge was selected as the school’s 2021 Lasallian Educator of the Year. During her announcement, Dr. Alumbaugh shared a number of comments made by fellow faculty and staff members about Mrs. Talmadge. Here are some of the comments made during the nomination process:

The Lasallian Educator of the Year award honors an educator who is chosen by his or her peers to receive a very special award, and is given to a faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of St. La Salle, specifically meeting the following criteria:

O A dedicated and committed individual who is an exemplary educator.

O An educator who understands his/her own dignity as a child of God so that he/she can pass this on to students.

O A person who cherishes and cares for his/ her students like an older brother or sister, and, above all, someone who is committed to a life of faith and expresses that in a commitment to teach his or her students the importance of the spiritual life, inculcating living values.

“Annemarie is an incredible educator and is professional, dedicated, and passionate. Her energy level and enthusiasm for her subject matter is contagious. Even in this unprecedented year, she has continued to be a passionate educator.” “Mrs. Talmadge’s students love her – and she loves them. She is challenging and warm, demanding and approachable. Her classes are always sought after, and she regularly writes more recommendation letters for college than almost any other faculty member.” Put simply, “Her dedication to both her students and the school is exceptional.” “She is a very faith-filled person who believes strongly in the dignity and well-being of each person created in the image and likeness of God. “She most definitely is an example of showing dignity and respect to others.”

Two staff members composed a joint nomination for Mrs. Talmadge that epitomizes so much about her professional commitment to De La Salle High School: “She takes on so many duties around school including junior class moderator, department chair, responsibility of remodeling the Faculty MOD, all with 100 percent effort and kind words to all. She has also been acknowledged through the Veterans of Foreign Wars - an outside organization - which means she is touching people outside De La Salle. She is also an amazing mother of elementary school children DURING A PANDEMIC. She’s our Hero!” Previous recipients of this award from our current faculty include Mr. Eidson, Mr. Ladouceur, Mr. Zorad, Mr. Hassett, Mr. Hirsch, Mrs. Stevenson, Mr. Oelschlager, Mrs. Acquistapace, Mr. Guthrie, Ms. Dickson, Mr. Berkes, Mr. Aliotti, Mrs. Appel, Mrs. Mattos, Mr. Graham, Mr. Aquino, and Mr. Olwell.

IN 2021 At the end of the 2020-21 school year, De La Salle celebrated the retirements of five long-time faculty and staff members. Those five individuals included receptionist Sherry Bedford, faculty member Matthew Castello ’80, President Mark DeMarco ’78, teacher and football coach Bob Ladouceur, and Religious Studies instructor Bob Zorad. Mr. Castello, Mr. DeMarco, and Mr. Ladouceur were featured in past issues of the Union magazine (dlshs.org/union), so in this issue we will highlight the careers of Sherry Bedford and Bob Zorad.

Sherry Bedford

Known by many at De La Salle as the “face of the school,” Sherry Bedford worked as the receptionist in the Main Office for 18 years when she retired at the end of the 2020-21 school year. A mother of three boys, all who attended De La Salle, Sherry first worked at the school as a parent volunteer beginning in 1998. After a few years as a volunteer, she was employed at the school in 2003, working part-time in the Attendance Office. She took over as the school’s full-time receptionist, beginning with the 2005-06 school year, the role she passionately held for 16 years. In her role, she was the person that greeted you as you entered the main office, or was the voice you heard when you needed help over the phone. An avid football fan, Sherry was a die-hard supporter of both the De La Salle Spartans and San Francisco 49ers. If you ever attended De La Salle home football games, you could always hear her yelling from the stands, “Somebody hit somebody!”

Bob Zorad

Robert Zorad, well known for his kindness and compassion by his colleagues, retired from De La Salle High School following the 2020-21 school year, spending all 32 years teaching in the Religious Studies department. Bob was a key coordinator in the development of the school’s Kairos Retreats, which began in January of 2000. Since then, the school has completed close to 140 Kairos Retreats over the past 21 years, many of which Bob Zorad attended himself. Bob was also a key contributor to the school’s Student Coalition On Respectful Education (SCORE) program, since its inception over 18 years ago, and held morning spiritual Yoga sessions for faculty and staff. As a faculty member at De La Salle, Bob will always be remembered for a variety of reasons, as many summarized during the spring of 2021 St. La Salle Prayer service. Bob was well known for his quick wit and wry sense of humor, and for always reminding everyone that “we are always in the Holy Presence of God.” Bob always had a sense of calm and purpose, and shared his authentic self with everyone while inspiring faith for his colleagues and students. He always made everyone feel special, and was always a bright light in everyone’s life at De La Salle.

A Taste of De La Salle With the return of signature events at De La Salle, more than 400 parents, alumni, friends, faculty and staff of the community came out for A Taste of De La Salle on Thursday, September 16. This year’s Taste event marked the return of major events for the school, as its last on-campus community event for De La Salle was the 2020 Crab Feed on January 25, 2020.

Mass of the Holy Spirit Like many campus activities, school Masses also had to go virtual during the pandemic, but returned to a full on-campus service on August 25th. With Father LaSalle Hallissey ‘69 proceeding over the Mass, all De La Salle students, faculty, and staff came together in the Quad to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit, which welcomes the students back to campus and provides a blessing over the start of the new academic year.

The Club Fair offers students the opportunity to showcase the 60-plus student club offerings for the school. Freshman Orientation Although the official first day of school was Wednesday, August 12, the school year got off to a start on Monday, August 10 with Freshman Orientation. During the six-hour orientation for the freshmen, they were greeted by many faculty and staff members of the school, and more importantly, more than 100 OnBoard! Student leaders from the upper classes to help acclimate them to the school through various activities. Freshman students also picked up their books for the first time as De La Salle students. Cereal Drive The 21st Annual De La Salle Cereal Drive kicked off on Monday, September 20 and ran through Friday, October 8. The De La Salle Cereal Drive continues to support the local community by providing more than 3,000 boxes of cereal to the Monument Crisis Center, which provides needy families a healthy breakfast to start their day. After receiving more than $16,000 in donations in 2020 through a completely online donation campaign, this year’s Cereal Drive was a hybrid model, which received over 2,000 boxes of cereal and more than $4,000 in financial support, helping the school reach its overall goal.

Kairos Retreats De La Salle’s Senior Kairos Retreats also returned to their off-site format as Kairos 134 saw 31 students and five adult leaders depart for the Vallombrosa Retreat Center in Menlo Park, for the three-day and two-night spiritual journey. Kairos challenges the young men to integrate their faith into the relationship with God, others, and themselves, and for many, they consider this event to be a life changing experience which allows one to openly share their life experiences in the context of faith. 19

De La Salle Alumni Events and Reunions Due to COVID-19, De La Salle and Carondelet high schools have had to cancel or postpone many of their alumni events over the past two years. However, with the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, De La Salle was able to slowly bring these alumni events back to campus, and plans for future events are on-going. We hope that this school year will see the return of all alumni activities for both campuses.

Fall Sports

During the fall semester, De La Salle hosted affinity events for each of the school’s fall sports teams. Alumni from the De La Salle water polo and cross country teams came together on Saturday, August 21 to gather together once again. The 20-year tradition of the cross country run was held at Heather Farm Park, where the harrier alumni competed against the current students in the two-mile run. All gathered at De La Salle after the event for lunch and an opportunity to reminisce about the “glory days”. The football alumni held their annual event on Friday, October 1, with a pregame reception in the Brother’s Residence Courtyard. The reception was held prior to De La Salle’s nationally televised football game on ESPN against St. Frances Academy (MD).

De La Salle head varsity water polo coach Robbie Arroyo hosted the annual alumni versus student water polo match and reunion honoring Mark Ayers ’97. Following the match, the players and alumni gathered at Rocco’s Pizzeria for lunch.

Winter Sports

For the winter sports of basketball, soccer, and wrestling, event planning is currently underway for all three sports. The soccer alumnus event will be held on Wednesday, November 24 with their alumni game at Owen Owens Field, followed by a reception. With De La Salle alumni Marcus Schroeder ’06 returning to lead the program, basketball’s alumni event will move to December 21st, with a reception for the returning alumni of the program. All three current Spartan teams will play at home that day, with the varsity game scheduled for 5 p.m. The hospitality event will be held in the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center after the varsity game. The current wrestling schedule is still being finalized; therefore, the wrestling alumni hospitality event has not been scheduled at the time of print. A hospitality event is expected to be scheduled in conjunction with a home dual meet.

Class Reunions

For the De La Salle and Carondelet classes of 1970 and 1971, a zoom reunion was held on October 9th, with more than 40 alumni from both schools attending the virtual 50-year reunion. These classes are planning to host an in-person gathering during the spring of 2022. De La Salle and Carondelet high schools are planning to host reunion events for the classes ending in 0, 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 in the summer of 2022. Please check the De La Salle reunions webpage or social media group pages for information about these reunions as it becomes available. Be sure to check out the De La Salle Alumni website (dlshs.org/alumni) or the alumni Facebook and LinkedIn pages for details about future alumni events. In his 21 years as the head coach of the Spartan’s wrestling program, he led the school to 11 North Coast Section championships, while sending nearly 100 wrestlers to state meets, where they claimed 23 medals and two individual state championships (Peyton Omania ‘18 in 2018, Kyle Parco ‘19 in 2019). He compiled a 74-40 record during his four years at CSUB, which included three top-five Pac-10 Championship finishes. The 1994 De La Salle Football Team posted a perfect 13-0 record, en route to the school’s third straight and 10th North Coast Section Championship in 13 years. The 1994 Spartans outscored their opponents 115-14 in the three playoff games, as “the streak” was extended to 39 consecutive wins. Following the 35-0 victory over James Logan in the NCS Championship game, De La Salle was named national champions by the National Sports News Services (NSNS) and the World Features Syndicate National Prep Poll (WFSNPP), marking the first of seven national titles for the De La Salle football program.

Dan Vinson ’04 was a four-year starter for the De La Salle varsity lacrosse team (200104) and was a member of the team during the program’s inaugural season in 2001. A team captain for the Spartans in 2003 and 2004, Dan earned All-American honors by US Lacrosse, both as a junior and a senior. He was also a member of the school’s National Honor Society, was a Peer Helper, and a Youth Educator. Slam.Dunk. Marcus Schroeder ’06 Returns to De La Salle as Basketball Coach and Assistant AD On August 6th, De La Salle Vice President for Athletics, Leo Lopoz announced that Marcus Schroeder ’06 would return to campus to coach the varsity basketball team and serve as an Assistant Athletic Director for the Athletics Department. Marcus returns to De La Salle after an impressive playing and coaching resume at the collegiate level. He coached at Saint Mary’s College from 2010-21, after a four-year playing career at Princeton University (2006-10). “Marcus’ education, playing career, and coaching experience, along with his work ethic and integrity, make him a perfect fit for our program,” said Lopoz. “I am confident he will make a major impact both within and outside of the De La Salle community.” Marcus graduated from Princeton in 2010 with a bachelor of arts in history, then completed his master’s degree in kinesiology from Saint Mary’s College of California in 2013. “It is an honor and privilege to serve as Head Basketball Coach at De La Salle High School, a place that has such rich history and tradition,” said Schroeder. “I had a tremendously positive experience here as a student-athlete and I look forward to helping provide that same experience to the student-athletes that I will coach. I look forward to entrenching myself in the De La Salle community and am excited about the challenges that lie ahead.” Marcus brings 10 years of NCAA coaching experience to Winton Drive and returns to De La Salle from Saint Mary’s College where he was most recently the Associate Head Basketball Coach for the nationally-ranked men’s basketball program. But when the head basketball coach position opened at De La Salle he was excited about the opportunity and challenge ahead when returning to his alma mater. “Being a head coach at any level is not easy,” said Schroeder. “Whether it’s third-grade basketball, high school, college, or the pros, it’ll be a really good challenge. I’ll develop a lot and grow as a leader and a coach, getting to lead a really good high school basketball program.” Another thing that was appealing to Marcus was the opportunity to spend more time at home with his young family. Marcus and his wife Erin welcomed their second child in August, when their son Frank was born. They also have a two-year old daughter named Ruth. “Where my family’s at in our journey — we just had a second child — the timing was right. It was going to be a good chance to create a little better rhythm at home, now with two kids,” said Schroeder. I n addition to his role as the head basketball coach, Marcus will serve as Assistant Athletic Director. In that position, he will be responsible for expanding the reach and growth of the De La Salle athletic camps and academic enrichment programs. The net revenue from those programs will be used to provide access and support for students from families of limited financial resources through the school’s Bishop John S. Cummins Scholarship Program. “ Ultimately, the development you get as a head coach — whether it’s high school, college, pro — is immeasurable,” Schroeder added. “You’ve got to make every decision, you’ve got to call the plays, you’re the guy talking in every huddle, in every timeout, in every locker room session, and at practice. There’s a lot of growth there.” Above: Erin, Frank, Marcus and Ruth Schroeder

SpartanSports De La Salle Athletics 2021 Recap

After nearly one year away from competition, the De La Salle spring season got off to a quick and busy start with an on-campus cross country meet at Jesuit High School. The non-traditional format and schedules would tell the story of the 2021 sports season, with all sports packed into a tight window of time. Outdoor wrestling you say? De La Salle wrestling had its senior day against Las Lomas on the turf of Owen Owens Stadium. De La Salle cross country coaches got creative and designed both a two-mile and a three-mile course on campus where we ended up successfully hosting meets. The De La Salle baseball team was able to play a full regular season schedule, finishing with 13 straight victories to earn yet another 20-win season. Spartan lacrosse was equally impressive winning 12 of 13 games of a schedule that included the likes of Granite Bay, Redwood, and rival San Ramon Valley. With state and section playoffs off the table for the season, the goal for our programs was to create the best schedule and experience possible. The varsity head coaches really wanted to give our student-athletes the most enjoyable and competitive season they could. De La Salle soccer for example was able to compete against North Coast Section (NCS) playoff nemesis Berkeley, and on the road at Bishop O’Dowd and Miramonte. Soccer finished unbeaten on the campaign. Two indoor sports were able to get the green light with weekly testing involved. To keep the bubble small, basketball played their way through a league schedule with matchups against the same school on consecutive nights. Hoops found success against perennial NCS power Salesian and throughout their East Bay Athletic League games. De La Salle volleyball had a solid run with a young squad, going 8-0 in league play. In the water, first-year water polo coach Robby Arroyo guided his squad to a 14-4 record, while swim coach Tom Johnson led the student-athletes through a season of non-scoring meets. Track and field hosted a successful multi-school invitational here on Winton Drive, and our golf team once again showed their class, navigating their way through a mixture of competitions over the spring months. Lastly, football and rugby were dominant, as the two elite programs combined for a 11-0 record! While we did not have the opportunity to compete for a state or section title in 2021, we felt blessed to be able to give our student-athletes a season of sports to enjoy.

ANNUAL HONOR ROLL OF DONORS Fiscal Year 2020-2021 Fundraising is a priority for De La Salle High School as it complements our mission, serving all students, and our annual operational needs. Supporting the school’s annual fundraising efforts is vital to the financial health, growth, and future of the school and puts our students first by serving school priorities such as: making tuition assistance possible for families with varying levels of need, providing tools and training for our faculty and staff through professional development, and facilitating a wide array of co-curricular programs so that all students have the opportunity for activity, leadership, and expression outside of the classroom. Thank you to all of our donors for putting our students first! Endowment and Named Funds Endowments are the financial foundation of a school. Rather than used for immediate needs, endowed funds are invested. The earnings on these investments then provide a stable, ongoing source of funds for scholarships, operations, and other areas of campus life where there is a need. The goal of an endowment is to use enough earnings to accomplish the purpose for which the endowment was created, while retaining a portion to allow for growth and future use. Endowments and Named Funds are established with a minimum $50,000 gift. Alumni Honor Roll of Donors The De La Salle Alumni Association continues to build on our efforts to educate alumni on the various funding initiatives of the school. Many are surprised to learn that tuition does not cover the full cost to educate a student throughout the school year. Hugo Alan Ramirez (February 20, 2000 – July 5, 2021) De La Salle High School Alumni Hugo Alan Ramirez ’18, who completed his third year at Sonoma State University, was struck by a car and killed at the age of 21. Hugo was a pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business financial management. A former soccer player at De La Salle, Hugo was one of the team leaders and was a part of the 2018 team that won the NCS Championship. Hugo was the oldest of four sons (Matthew ’19, Max ’21 and Sebastian ’21) to parents Rosie and Hugo Ramirez. This September, Hugo’s family established an Endowed Memorial Scholarship as a lasting tribute to Hugo’s legacy on the De La Salle campus, to provide tuition assistance to a Spartan student that demonstrates financial need, while also being a leader in the classroom, in his co-curricular activities, and in his community. If you would like to support the Hugo A. Ramirez Memorial Scholarship fund, please contact Mark Chiarucci at 925-288-8106. FALL 2021
