De La Salle Academy’s First Graduating Class Fall 2017

Commencement 2017 • Learning Center Alumni: Why I Give L The Brotherhood of the Spartan Is Like No Other L

Message from the President

Dear Friends of De La Salle,

Mark DeMarco ’78 President

We have served and continue to serve four “generations” of Spartans.

As I reflect on how our school has grown over the last 50 years I believe we have a school – to coin a phrase - for all ages! A school that adapts and transforms to the changing times and students we serve. As you can see in the chart below – we have served and continue to serve four “generations” of Spartans. For most of us who work at De La Salle we believe the students that come to us are getting younger and younger but in reality it is us who are getting older and older! Just this past June we had our first graduating class from De La Salle Academy and these young men are now at the High School with bright futures ahead of them. This summer we renovated part of the 400 Wing to add a Learning Resource Center and we have hired a new learning coordinator to better serve the needs of our students. We also completed the first year of our new administrative model. It has served us well and we will continue to refine it. We have received numerous inquiries from other Catholic Schools who want to adopt the model.

UNION FALL 2017

Finally, as of this writing we are windingup the Capital Campaign on the STREAM Innovation Center and are setting our sights on our Athletic Performance Center – stay tuned! Thank you to those who have supported our efforts and we look forward to future support. While many scholars believe that the meaning of Proverbs 29:18 is widely misunderstood I think the King James Version and translation serves us well “Where there is no vision the people perish.” In my ten years as President, I have always said We must not become complacent in what we do on a daily basis and we must be true to the Mission our Founder has set out for us! May God continue to bless.

In the Spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle,

Mark DeMarco ’78 President

The De La Salle “Union” is a bond of unity for the extended De La Salle family — alumni, parents, alumni parents and the many friends who make up our school’s growing family.

The School Seal

The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

Neckties to Diplomas:

De La Salle Academy Graduates Its First Class

O

By Bob Carrejo

Republished with permission. Special thanks to the Brothers of the Christian Schools District of San Francisco New Orleans!

n June 2, 2017, school and District of San Francisco New Orleans history were made as 15 young men received their diplomas as members of the first graduating class of De La Salle Academy in Concord, California. As the audience of family and friends at De La Salle High School Theater looked on, the Class of 2017 was honored, congratulated, and then pronounced as graduated by De La Salle Academy president Mark DeMarco and principal Marilyn Paquette. The members of the De La Salle Academy Class of 2017 include Gerardo Baez-Vargas, Brian Jesus Camarena, Juliano Robert Canari, Alex Cardenas, Jose Ceja, Diego Cuevas, Jerod Davis, Luis Hinojosa, Nathan John Lomayesva, Tyler Osbey, Luis Sias-Chacon, Ramiro Rosas, Alexander Ramirez, Felipe Silva, and Fernando Valdez. Also in attendance at the commencement was Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ of the Diocese of Oakland. His presence and remarks during the ceremony’s final blessing would underscore the special nature not only of the event but also of the school itself. “In four years as Bishop, this is my first graduation,” he said. “With 55 schools (in the Diocese), I have always thought that if I attended one, I should attend them all. And so, I haven’t been to any. Yet, I am here tonight because I believe in you and because I knew you had a special future ahead of you from when I was with you at your first mass at De La Salle several years ago when you received your ties. I am so happy to be with you tonight. Congratulations.”

UNION FALL 2017

It was in the fall of 2014 that the class received those “Spartan neckties”, the school’s traditional symbol of mutual acceptance and respect. Except that, to those particular students, it represented even more. It meant that they had been given a call to rise and a chance to try. In the new school on Galaxy Way, their lives would converge with the people and tradition of the Lasallian mission. It was to be a life-changing encounter, one that actually had been set into motion several years earlier by another providential meeting—that of a community’s need, an entrepreneur’s generosity, and a new District’s eyes of faith. De La Salle Academy began as a conversation between De La Salle High School president Mark DeMarco and area

businessman and philanthropist Kenneth H. Hofmann. A longtime supporter of several Contra Costa educational works, including De La Salle High School, Hofmann was looking for a new project when DeMarco proposed starting a school specifically for economically and socially at-risk students. Hofmann offered to provide funding for the first five years of such a school, and the impetus for a new Lasallian ministry was born. Those first days, and then years, would indeed pass quickly, and the distant hopes and dreams that had accompanied them were now much closer, and about to become reality. It was time for the school to prepare for its first graduation. Throughout the ceremony, different school community members and supporters did their best to express what they had experienced together. Eventually, it would be the words of valedictorian Alexander Ramirez that would best capture both the spirit and the significance of what had happened within the walls of his school over the past three years. In his valedictory address, he said: ‘If you’re absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success.’ That quote is from the actor, Will Smith. Think of this quote and of how it expresses brotherhood and its importance. Class of 2017, ask yourselves this—what will you do to not be absent in the time of struggle of your brothers, so that you can rise to success as your brothers rise? We rise or fall, but when either of those happens, we do it together! Because of De La Salle Academy, the Lasallian zeal for building saving relationships was alive in 15 young men who not long before had been in danger of being dismissed and forgotten by the world. Now, they knew that they had beaten the odds, and they knew how they had done it: together. From neckties to diplomas, from uncertainty to promise. For them, this graduation was not just about reaching a milestone. It was about victory.

Days later, when asked to look back on the Class of 2017 and its journey at the Academy, Principal Marilyn Paquette would affirm that the lesson its valedictorian so eloquently described had, indeed, been learned. Her strongest memory, she said, was of the bond of brotherhood that the students shared. “They challenged each other from day one. They are a driven group of young men who are willing to work hard to achieve, and they learned the value of pushing one another to achieve their best effort. It was truly inspiring to watch them create community!” In the broader picture, the historical significance of the founding of De La Salle Academy and the achievements of its first graduating class have not been lost on those who have been most responsible for its care. Speaking to the school’s civic impact, DeMarco shares, “The Mayor and City Council members are proud of this school,” while, to the District perspective, Paquette observes, “In establishing schools like (the Academy), we are focusing on serving those most in need, and we continue to get back to the heart of our Lasallian mission when we establish these new Lasallian communities.”

With the graduation of its first class of students, De La Salle Academy can claim success in, at the very least, laying the foundation for all of its future efforts to be the kind of school that it set out to be. Asked how best to describe exactly what that is and how it will continue, Paquette responded, “We are a Miguel school in the Lasallian tradition, serving students who would not otherwise be able to receive a Catholic education. Our hope, our mission, is that we walk with the students and their families to provide them a strong middle school foundation. We will continue to walk with them and support them throughout high school and college. We aim to break the cycle of generational poverty through quality education.” It is clear that the District’s youngest school is growing up quickly and well. Thanks to the leadership of Brothers, Lasallian Partners, and benefactors, De La Salle Academy’s students can rest assured that theirs is a school that will be there for them today and tomorrow, giving to them a human and Christian education and accompanying them as they make their way to all that life holds for them. A school present in the struggles and present in the successes. Just ask the Class of 2017.

Chris Behring, Salutatorian - Speech Excerpt I believe the motto of the United States, that bears its name on our nation's seal, can be applied to De La Salle as well. E pluribus unum is Latin for “Out of Many, One”. Allow me to explain. Out of many schools, there was one which brought all of us together. White, black, rich, poor, Catholic and atheist, book smart and street smart. We were drawn from Fremont to Napa, Richmond to Stockton. We were strangers coming together to get an education. But out of many schools, only one could create lasting friendships. Only one could give us an education that went beyond academics to teach us about life itself, a Lasallian education that defines the way we live our lives. Out of many schools, only one could become our home. And it was only this one, that was ever meant to be our home. I call this school our home because it is. We have all

become each other's brother and I now see the faculty as our guardians. As our teachers, yes they provided us with the knowledge and skills to further our education, but they have done so much more than that. These people have an unrivaled passion unlike any other to teach us about life in ways the average teacher does not. Whether it's Mr. Kelly at the Christmas liturgy, flawlessly singing Mary Did You Know; Mrs. Acquistapace creating and performing her own rap song dedicated to the memories shared in the biology brotherhood that year; or Mr. Hassett, pouring his heart and soul into a life-altering Kairos talk that taught us that ‘God don’t make junk.’ To the faculty and staff, thank you. Thank you for your dedication and devotion to making us men of faith, integrity, and scholarship.

To start off, I want to do some audience participation. All my brothers in the graduating class of 2017, raise your hand and keep it up if you remember this (hold up ISO card) little card. It was given to us at the outset of our journey together, and it outlines the ISOs, formerly the ESLRs, or the Integral Student Outcomes for short. If you remember it, keep your hands up. Now, if you recall, Mr. Hassett distributed these cards when we were but wee freshmen, and told us to keep them in our wallets as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a Spartan. If you kept it in your wallet, keep your hand up. Be completely honest. Now you can all put your hands down. If you no longer carry the card with you, that’s okay, because I believe this small card has served its purpose. I believe that I am speaking to a group of men who no longer need a card to be reminded of their responsibilities as Spartans to their community and to themselves because we are young men who already live and breathe the lessons on this card. The first ISO, or Student Outcome, is that we are leaving here as a “Man of Faith.” What exactly is that, you may ask yourself? What does that mean? Well, luckily it’s written on the card so I don’t have to Connor Menetee, Valedictorian - Speech Excerpt come up with some contrived answer. 2016-17 Lasallian Educator of the Year Honoree:

Mrs. Janet Appel, Co-Director of College Counseling

There was excitement in the Hofmann Student Center this past April as Dr. Heather Alumbaugh revealed the 2016-17 Lasallian Educator of the Year recipient. Only three people knew who the winner would be—even the winner would be caught unaware. Knowing that she had a rapt audience, Dr. Alumbaugh slowly revealed a few clues as to the recipient: “This recipient is kind, generous, and thoughtful, and brings out the best in students.” “This educator interacts with all students, especially the Seniors, in a way that validates who the student is as an individual and helps them to reach their full potential ... This educator does this in a way that walks with and journeys with the student much as an older sister or brother rather than an authoritative figure.” You could see the wheels turning as everyone in the room tried to correctly identify the honoree before the person sitting next to them did. The clues became a bit clearer: “She has been very involved in supporting the tutoring program at DeMarillac over the years, has been actively involved in our Diversity and Social Justice programs, attended numerous campus ministry retreats, and supervised the recycling program of the school for several years. Our recipient initiated the program for first-generation students to visit colleges and initiated the Senior Advisory Program.” By now, students were eagerly turning around in their seats, trying to find Mrs. Janet Appel. Indeed, a few faculty were trying to track her down, too, but she was nowhere to be found. Ironically enough, Mrs. Appel was on her way to a college counseling conference in San Francisco. After finally getting in touch with her and a quick U-Turn at the Orinda BART Station, Mrs. Appel made it back with minutes to spare before her name was called. When Dr. Alumbaugh announced her name and with a humble smile on her face, Mrs. Appel walked to the stage as nearly 1,300 faculty, staff, and students gave her a much-deserved standing ovation. To say this award was unexpected would be an understatement. “I was so honored and surprised to receive this award,” said Mrs. Appel. “It means being seen as the person I would hope to be, in my best self. I am also especially and deeply humbled to receive this award when I think of those who have received it before me.”

Facilitating Life Long Learning:

De La Salle’s New Learning Center

A

fter five years of planning and a swift ten weeks of demolition and construction, the De La Salle Learning Center opened this past August. A state-ofthe art room comprised of three conference rooms, office space, a quiet room, and twenty carousel stations, the Learning Center is an area where students will be able to focus on their studies and, as the name suggests, to learn. “The biggest thing that excites me about the Learning Center itself is the atmosphere it creates with life-long learning,” says Mr. Jon Norfolk, the newly hired Learning Center Coordinator. “It’s really amazing to see students go through that learning process from their freshmen to senior year and learn not only academic skills but life skills, as well.” Mr. Norfolk will be in charge of managing the space—from overseeing conference room reservations for faculty and staff to coordinating with tutors and providing a structured testing environment for the students. The Learning Center has not been open for very long, but already it has made a big impact on students. “It’s amazing what a new space—whatever it might be—does to your confidence. You see the new furniture, you see the offices, and you look around and everyone is working because they have the proper resources they need to focus and to do well. When students walk through the door, they know that it’s time to work. They can see that people have made a significant investment in them,” observed Mr. Norfolk.

For Mr. Sean Bristol, the Learning Needs and Spartan Success Coordinator, this Learning Center is the culmination of many years of research and planning. “It couldn’t have turned out any better. You have a vision and have no idea how it might turn out,” said Mr. Bristol. “The things we thought were most important and that we really wanted, like the conference rooms, we have now. It’s incredible.” For him and Mr. Greg MacArthur, the Bishop Cummins Program Coordinator, the impetus was really about finding space.

With more and more students needing special services outside of the classroom— whether it’s make-up test taking, extended test taking, or tutoring, for example—small classrooms or “one-size-fits-all” rooms just weren’t working. “Greg might have 50 students in one half of the classroom for study hall, and I would have 12 students on the other half trying to take a test—not the best environment for any of those students.” With more classrooms being built in the STREAM Innovation Center, the two of them realized that there might be an opportunity to move out of their tight quarters. And so, they put together a proposal that asked the school to convert some of those old lab rooms in the 400-wing to a dedicated learning space for students. The school agreed. “We started looking at schools throughout the Oakland Diocese and the South Bay, such as Bishop O’Dowd, Serra, and Bellarmine. More and more high schools are realizing that they need designated space for testing and after school tutoring,” Mr. Bristol explained. He, too, has enjoyed seeing the students’ reactions to this new space. “I told the students that, as we built this space, we made sure to keep them in mind and make sure we considered what they might need. It’s humbling for them to walk in now and to know that it was designed and built for them to succeed.”

T he De L a S alle Band

O

ut on the muddy field on a warm August morning, the students were taking a well-deserved break. They’d been practicing new routines and new material all week, and in just a few weeks under the Friday night lights, they’d be performing in front of several thousand people. They wanted to be ready. “You have to be mentally and physically prepared for what happens on the field,” said Senior Matt Beyer ’18, “and in the band room.” Instead of shoulder pads and helmets, the field had twenty-pound bass drums and thirty-pound sousaphones. Instead of the clash of pads meeting pads, you heard the clash of cymbals. Those gridiron sounds would come later that afternoon. For now, the field belonged to members of the DLS Band. *** There are three bands at De La Salle: Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. Students who are in Marching Band in the fall, are also a part of Concert Band in the spring, and students can try out to be a part of the smaller Jazz Band. Matt, who is the trombone section leader as well as one of the two drum majors this year, further explained how each band really has its own musical focus. “For Marching Band, we want to find music that will engage with people when they’re at the game. We’re doing a pop theme this year with songs from Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars.” Concert and Jazz bands, in contrast, offer opportunities for the students to play music that is more ‘cool.’ As he reflected on last year, Matt said, “What really gave us a lot of success is that everyone in band really liked the music we were playing.” For Band Director Mr. Larry Colόn, the challenge each year is to

assess what skills the students have, what fundamentals they might need to work on, and how best to showcase their talent through song selection. “When I pick music,” explained Mr. Colόn, “I want to pick arrangements that highlight the skill and technique of that year’s particular group of students. If I have a strong oboe player, I’ll pick an arrangement that features the oboe more.” Last year was a particularly successful year for the band. In April, they traveled to San Diego to play in the OnStage Festival. There, the Concert Band and Jazz Band were awarded Gold Rating and First Place in the Festival. They also received the Sweepstakes Award and Adjudicator’s top scoring band award. For this upcoming year, Mr. Colόn is excited about the possibilities. This current group has shown advanced skill and talent levels, which has allowed Mr. Colόn to consider selecting more challenging pieces as well as playing in more prestigious competitions. Being able to have those opportunities would not be possible without the support of the school. “I don’t know if people know how great of a thing we have here,” said Mr. Colόn. “Where we are now is amazing to where the program started a few decades ago with only five or six members. We went from a handful of students to performing at Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, and the Chicago Symphony Hall. We wouldn’t have those opportunities without the active support from the school and the families here at De La Salle.” *** On that August day, though, the focus wasn’t on venue acoustics per se – it was to make sure the students were in shape and ready to perform come September. As Mr. Colόn pointed out, a few of those coaches were former DLS band members. “There are always alumni

involved in the program. My drum coach right now is Marshall Huberty from the class of 2016. I love having alumni come in and show current students that they can still pursue their passion in music after their high school career is finished. Even if they’re not one of the coaches, there are still alumni who just come by to visit during band camp.” Matt further explained the bond between band members. “With sports, even if you’re all playing the same game, you’ll still be a little bit divided by varsity or junior varsity levels. Because Band is such a group effort, it really brings you closer to people and even to the school,” he said. “But in Band, Seniors work with Juniors, Sophomores work with Freshmen, so by the time camp is over and certainly by the time you graduate, you’re going to have friends at all class levels. There’s a real sense of camaraderie.” When Matt thought about this upcoming year, he focused not just on what he wanted to accomplish, but also on what he wanted his bandmates to achieve and the audiences to experience. “When I graduate, I want everyone to be able to look back and say that not only did they have a successful year, because we always push for success, but I want them to say that it was a year that they enjoyed.

I want the other band members to get to know each other. I want people to be able to look at me and say that I was able to help them reach their own goals.” When asked how people can support the band, he said, “There’s nothing that energizes us more than when we see a full student section or a full parent section, and everyone is cheering. You don’t have dance along with our moves, but just come listen – at the game or at one of the Concert or Jazz Band performances. It really means a lot for everyone.” *** Their rest completed, the students picked up their instruments, shared a few more laughs, and headed back on the field, where they were ready to practice again. Colόn pointed out, a few of those

SAVE THE DATE! #GivingTuesday - Tuesday, November 28, 2017!

O

n Tuesday, November 28, 2017, De La Salle is celebrating a day dedicated to giving; #GivingTuesday, a national movement to encourage philanthropic giving during the holiday season that we are proud to be part of. Throughout the month of November, be sure to follow De La Salle High School on social media – Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter – to hear from alumni who are proud of their Spartan connection, learn how De La Salle impacted their lives, and why they feel it is so very important to give back to the school that set them up for success. Our goal is simple – for 100 donors to make their annual gift to De La Salle on #GivingTuesday and to raise over $19,650 for the Annual Fund. Last year, our community rallied behind our #GivingTuesday effort raising over $42,000! Your support will allow De La Salle to continue to make the gift of a Catholic, Lasallian education available to our students as well as fund school priorities such as financial aid, faculty development and co-curricular programs.

#Give2DLS - You can make your gift today, on #GivingTuesday, or anytime in between. Consider making a gift in honor of the year of our founding, 1965: $19.65, $196.50, $1,965, or even $19,650! All gifts are treasured and through your support, you can give future alumni a GREAT gift this year. #Give2DLS Join us on the Social Media Platforms below to reconnect with alumni and friends of De La Salle: Facebook facebook.com/dlshs.concord facebook.com/dlshsalumni/ Instagram @delasallehighschool

Staying in Touch: What’s Happening? Paul Ruiz '82: After graduating from UC Berkeley and receiving his commission in the Army Reserves, Paul attended Infantry, Airborne, and Northern Warfare Schools. Now long a civilian, he obtained his MBA from St. Mary's College and is an insurance executive with Gen Re, a Berkshire Hathaway company. He is married to Hazra (Mohamed) Ruiz, and they have three children - Sara, Alya, and Atom (DLS 2019). Paul and Atom recently completed the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon in White Sands, New Mexico, on the 75th anniversary of the Death March. Paul's father had served with the U.S. Army's famed Philippine Scouts, surviving both the march and subsequent prison camp, and later fighting as a guerilla. Paul's father retired from the Army at White Sands Missile Range in 1959, and for son and grandson to honor his memory - participating in the memorial Death March Marathon at the place of his father's retirement - was especially meaningful. Paul would like to offer big Army HUA to all past and present DLS military.

Scott Roberts ’93: In January 2017, Scott founded FundaDream Inc, a charitable organization supporting greater access to extracurricular activities for youth. Sports, music, the arts and sciences are essential to the successful development of children. Future programs and events are in development.

He lives with his wife and son Darian Michael in the San Francisco Bay Area, and enjoys reading up on markets, real estate, and world politics. Daniel “DJ” John Pickolick ’07: On Saturday, May 20, 2017 DJ received his Juris Doctor degree, with Distinction, from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law.

Bradley Thomas McNell ’12: On Wednesday, May 18, 2017 Bradley graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and received his Commission from his Commander in Chief!

Staying Connected – Why I Give...

T

o kick off the 2017-2018 school year, returning Alumni Association Board members and newly joined members took a portion of their annual board retreat to reflect on their time as a student at De La Salle and share why personally each member continues to give back and remain engaged in the life of our school.

JJ Rassier ’98

Wells Fargo, Private Banker

Why I Give: To grow the spirit of De La Salle and our culture of support and community.

One in three students receive tuition assistance based upon need. I feel strongly that our alumni should maintain a sense of responsibility to support our fellow students and continue the essential high school experience that we were so fortunate to experience.

Patrick Ball ’90

INext Labs, Senior Vice President of Global Sales

Why I Give: It’s not just a school but a way of life. I’ve built real, life-long friendships span-

ning years of different graduating classes that have helped me to this day celebrate the best times of life and deal with the most difficult times. The amazing faculty helped build the foundation for who I am today. I am grateful for the experiences I have had and continue to have today as part of De La Salle. It is especially gratifying to see the next generation of my family come through De La Salle and experience the same. The Brotherhood is real.

Antoine Casanave ’02

Founder and CEO, The Casanave Group

Why I Give: I give, volunteer and contribute in every way possible to further the opportunity to those that want to be in an environment to help them achieve their highest aspirations. My parents, like many, financially sacrificed to send my younger brother and me to this special institution. As young teenagers attending the school, it's nearly impossible to fully grasp the great lifelong benefits that would come. Now as a 32 year old man, I see the true meaning of the De La Salle brotherhood more than I ever before. I want other young men to have the opportunity to matriculate through our school and be surrounded by people that know what it takes to win in life! 28

Richard McNell ’03 Cork Supply USA, Regional Sales Manager – California Why I Give: De La Salle gave me so much. The Lasallian brotherhood and sense of community prepared me to be a part of things much greater than myself. I am grateful for that, and feel that if I can facilitate that for someone else in any way, then it’s a win.

Timothy Smith ’10 Aecom, Civil Engineer Why I Give: I choose to give back because I still feel strongly connected to the De La Salle community. DLS prepared me well during my high school years and has continued to influence me after graduation so I look to find ways to strengthen the DLS community.

Anthony Pappageorge ’99 ARA Newmark a Commercial Real Estate, Senior Managing Director Why I Give: To assist De La Salle in helping to fund special projects that better campus life and tuition assistance where needed.

Arie VanGemeren ’05 Goldman Sachs, Private Wealth Advisor Why I Give: I value education as the universal equalizer for all people, and believe even more so in education that builds an upstanding and moral citizen. The School’s Mission to educate the poor and underserved speaks loudly to me and I think it's one of the most important tasks facing our generation.

Cortland L. Golightly ’98 Financial Planner at Insight Wealth, Strategies/ Sagemark Consulting (Lincoln Financial Advisors) Why I Give: I enjoy donating my time to The De La Salle Alumni Board of Directors and supporting the young men there to become “Les Hommes De Foi” (Men of Faith).

John Bellusa ’93 Retired Sergeant of Police from the City of Oakland, Loan Officer for Sierra Pacific Mortgage Company, Inc -Danville CA Branch Why I Give: I always wanted to reconnect with De La Salle since graduation. Working and life prevented me from doing so at the time, but now that I am retired and have a more flexible schedule, I can give time and energy back to De La Salle and receive constant flashbacks of good times and memories, while helping the current administration and students.

Dominic Villa ’05 Summit Funding, Mortgage Consultant Why I Give: De La Salle was monumental in my development as a man. The school and community have given me so much, from some of the strongest personal relationships in my life, to a strong sense of values and faith that have shaped the very core of the person I’ve become.

Scott Roberts ’93 WestPac Wealth Partners, Managing Director Why I Give: I strongly believe in De La Salle’s mission and the life changing experience students gain from attending our school. I’m proud to represent mu fellow alumni and have the opportunity to share the school’s values with others.

Anthony Viscia ’90 Pacific Funding Group, CEO Why I Give: To "pay it forward" and help support other young men so that they have an opportunity to experience De La Salle and all of the great things that go with it. Brotherhood. Sacrificing yourself when needed and working harder to making the person next to you better and stronger. By doing so we grow and become better and stronger ourselves.

Assistant Athletic Director Derricke Brown is pleased with the results. “Visually, the app looks amazing,” says Mr. Brown. “Our community will enjoy the various ways that we will be able to share content with them, whether it’s through videos, news stories, photos, or links to more information.” For REPu, working with De La Salle made complete sense. “Our app is a perfect fit for a school like De La Salle, who has built a premier athletic department and is looking for new ways to engage their fans and school community,” says Doug Miller, REPu’s Director of Sales. Indeed, De La Salle

is one of only a handful of high schools in the country that is able to offer an app like this to fans. Similar to collegiate and professional athletic apps, DLS Spartans will allow fans to bookmark their favorite teams and receive updates through push notifications ranging from real time scores to news alerts. “Our department is constantly seeking new avenues to promote the great things that our student athletes are doing with their various teams. Having our own app allows us to do just that, while also having something that the young men will be interested in,” explains Mr. Brown. DLS Spartans will have pages for each of the 16 programs and 39 teams within the Athletics Department. The app will also be mirrored on a new athletics website: www.dlsspartans.org. Combined, the new app and website will offer the DLS community an intuitive, engaging way to connect with DLS Athletics.

Athletic Performance Center Update

With the completion of funding for the STREAM Innovation Center, De La Salle can now focus efforts on the next capital project – construction for the Athletic Performance Center!

This $17 million dollar project is the next major fundraising effort serving the long term facility needs for our comprehensive Athletics Programs. De La Salle students are asked to address physical fitness and wellness through its health curriculum, opportunities available through intramural and interscholastic athletic programs, and through interaction with athletic trainers and nutrition guides. Therefore more and more students are participating in athletics or fitness based activities at a time where physical space constraints and desire to participate conflict with study time. The addition of a new Athletic Performance Center, along with a new competition gym, will provide larger, and therefore more safely managed space for weight training and management, and cardio-vascular conditioning, at a time when higher numbers of students are seeking such opportunities related to athletic team work (in and out of season) and/or personal fitness goals.

The Athletic Performance Center will... • Provide additional space for team practices, and curtail the need for early morning practices that begin at 6:00 a.m. and many evening practices that extend until 9:00 p.m., and thus allowing more study time. • Expand the current weight room, whose limited size has become a significant safety issue. More than 700 students use the weight room each year, yet it was originally designed to support just 400 students. • Provide a large flex space: additional space for team practices, non-athletics activities. • Increase indoor practice space. • Assembly and meeting space for 1,200 people. • Provide ample space for basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.

Want an early introduction to this effort? Please contact Mark Chiarucci at chiaruccim@dlshs.org or (925) 288-8106 to learn more about this effort and how you can get involved.
