GAZANKULU STADIUM INTRODUCTION Gazankulu stadium is a proposal project which stems from the idea of building a 40000+ capacity stadium which will serve as a multipurpose and eventing space for the community of Giyani and also be the home-ground for a home brewed and developed soccer team from the same area or any area which will fall under a 60km radius from the stadium’s location. The venue has to be easily accessible and avail enough parking space for a full attendance given the regulations and it needs to be closer to a transportation hub, it can be a taxi rank or bus depot as long as fans can easily get home after attending an event which will be hosted by the venue. The final location that was selected is a vacant space in the community of Giyani which geographically allows for a stadium construction given the topography and the size of the area. The space is closer to the CBD of Giyani, which has a newly built mall (Masingita Mall), a large taxi rank which departs multiple taxis from different townships around the area and also long distance taxis and mini-buses.

CONCEPT & DESIGN The concept materializes from the SAVANNA BIOME, which is a dominant biome here in Giyani and the whole of the Limpopo province which consists of a very dry atmosphere with golden bushes and grass surrounded by mountainous views from all around, with very less trees and less rain throughout the year and various seasons. The Stadium’s facade is designed in the format of curvature which represents the mountainous Giyani and the golden bronze panels represent the dominant colour of the bushes and the consistent warmth that makes up the biome. The glass panels which in mixture with the solid bronze panels create a sky effect, which will most likely happen when the skies reflect on the panels is also an amazing feature. The glass panels also help with lighting, allowing 65% of natural light to penetrate through and brighten up the upper levels without the use of artificial lighting during the day and also enables the visibility of some skeletons (structure) of the stadium which brings an interesting contrast.

THE FACADE The facade holds 1466 GOLDEN BRONZE PANELS & 3225 GLASS PANELS which make up 95% of the facade layout and design. The thin strip between the roof and the facade was left clear in order to let some light to the upper tier and also expose the steel structure that surrounds the upper concrete seating bowl.

1

STRUCTURE AND PLANNING The Stadium bowls influenced the structure and overall shape of the stadium. The sketch on the far right shows the steel tubes which holds both the roof and facade and ties to concrete bases which then transfers all the forces to the piles which are forever in friction with the ground. The 4 sketches in the middle explore how the roof ties to the concrete columns which are going to be situated at the edges of the stadium from all around. The roof should cover the upper tier and most of the lower tier, the VIP tier is covered by the upper tier so the roof won’t be as effective in rain coverage but will be for sun shading from different times of the day

VISIBILITY & SECTION DIAGRAMS The sketch below shows different viewpoints depending on the position one is seated at. It was mandatory that no matter where one is seated, the atmosphere and connection between the event that’s happening and the fans shouldn’t be disturbed because of a large distance between the two terminating the energy and connection. The tiers were designed in a way which allows the person seating in front of you not to act as a constant obstruction which disturbs one from watching the field space perfectly. Below are a few sketches showing views from a quick sketch section.

Various shades of colour have been used on they key / legend on the right to label each section which when put together becomes a complete project.

This is another blown up axonometric image but only showing the three concrete bowls / tiers that are projected one after the other in a vertical manner. The upper tier is the largest with a capacity of 23545 followed by the lower tier at 18790 and lastly the middle (VIP) tier which holds 3522 seats in capacity.

17

18

STADIUM FEATURES & SAFETY The Stadium has safety measures that are put in place to ensure that fans are safe from unnecessary injuries. At the end of each access row of stairs where exists are located are balustrades that are placed at the low ends to stop fans who might lose their grip to the treads. Handrails are also placed in a downward alignment to give fans the comfort of moving down at an inclination without the concern of falling and having nothing to balance with. A surround Audio system has been installed on the roof structures to allow for a 360o clear and audible sound to all the ears from occupants. Together with that are flood lights, Philips Arena Vision LED BVP420, these flood 75% of the stadium surface, lower and middle tiers. Entrances and exits are as important and vital as any other features on the stadium. There are numbered exits on all the bowels. Emergency exit stairs and elevators are in place from the basement to the VIP suites level. Food stalls and restrooms are also placed in a way that easily allows fans from whichever position to quickly get there and grab their food and also let go of some unwanted products and liquids from their bodies.

22

23

ACCESS STAIRS The Upper and middle tiers need easier and wide enough access stairs as 3522 fans will need to enter the VIP suites level and 23545 fans will need to be seated at the upper tier. 8 3.5m wide stairs have been placed around the stadium to allow for easier and wider access so supporters can easily fill the tiers to full capacity in a short period of time. In case of emergency there are also 8 emergency stairs situated all around the stadium to serve for this purpose.

24

25

EXIT & ENTRANCE The Upper tier has a capacity of 23545. It has 40 exit and entrance spots at a width of 1.5m to cater for emergency exits situations.

26

BUS ENTRY PORTS & PLAYERS TUNNEL The basement has a vehicular exit which allows the entry and exit of cars which park there and also those of stadium maintenance. Given the flexible height of the basement which is approximately 6m high and could even allow a double decker bus to pass through, the opportunity to make this cater for the buses which will carry the players was approved and was executed. The 2 images on the top right show the escalators and stairs which the players will use to access their change rooms and then later lead head on to the field. Below and on the top left are images of the players tunnel, marked in signature colours of red which is evident from the whole stadium, some TSONGA slogans and a few wall writings, wall lights, a long down-walk stair with a red carpet and central grip strip, a central balustrade and some down-lights and suspended ceiling lights.

27

28

STADIUM FLOOD LIGHTING The stadium is given its night glow from the specially selected Philips Arena Vision LED BVP420, these flood 75% of the stadium’s surface, lower and middle tiers.

29

30

31

COMMENTATOR BOX The commentator box is located on the edge of the upper tier to allow for a better and unobstructed view. This will house the commentators and other members of the technical teams who will be responsible for brining live commentary and game / match analysis. Some other features like relaxation spots are also availed on this box to allow for a comfortable atmosphere during. Since these people will need the restrooms just like anyone does, on the level below which will just be a few treads and risers away will have both male and female restrooms which they’ll be able to use exclusively. Special guests will also be allowed here given that they are part of the analysts panel.
