stacks tower douglas mayfield | matt woltering The Stacks Tower, located at the corner or Park and G st, houses the students and faculty of Newschool of Architecture and Design. Breaking away from the traditional box tower allows each unit to ffeel as though it were autonomous. Hanging gardens populate the terraces and allow the urban space to feel somewhat rural and natural. The tower takes advantage of predominant downtown views and is integrated with an aggressive passive cooling system design. Large doors open up in the hallway to reveal a connection with the surrounding skyline.
the RE-Building Center The Warehouse acts as a functional gallery, showcasing materials that have been reclaimed. The focus was to create a delicate and modest structure that would not seem out of place with its industrious surroundings. To celebrate the reclaimed materials that the warehouse will showcase, the existing structures have been decomposed and reused as new structure and the exterior’s gabion walls.

This collaborative project in Downtown San Diego’s waterfront explores the possibilities of urban planning for San Diego’s future in 2050. The project works to reconnect downtown San Diego to its waterfront by creating residential mixed use facilities, a physical fitness building, an amphitheater, an amusement park, filtered bay water for swimming, restaurants and a new waterfront park. The fractured elements work together to create an activated waterfront.
