USA iQFoil Athletes Compete in European Championships
By: JORDAN B. DARLING
MARSEILLE, FRANCE— The iQFoil European Championships wrapped up on Oct. 28 with three U.S. athletes competing against racers from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. The U.S. may not have placed high this championship, but the athletes are in good spirits and continuing to look forward to the next events for the team.
This was the first international event for the USA iQFoil athletes since the equipment’s official Olympic designation earlier this year.
“The European Championships were great fun and a great learning experience,” said Alex Temko, the U.S. male representative at the inaugural Junior Pan Am Games set for Cali, Colombia Nov. 26- Dec. 5 in an Oct. 29 press release from US Sailing. “I learned a lot about the Olympic venue and got to see the level of the fleet.”
Temko placed 94 out of 140 athletes in the overall rankings for the event.
Temko told US Sailing that he took several lessons from the event and will use them in the upcoming Pan-Am Games.
“I worked on switching from a racing mode to a relax-and-recovery mode,” said Temko in the press release. “I practiced my high-performance tactics and had plenty of opportunities to lock in my full speed on the reaches.”
Fiona Wylde is a recent addition to the iQFoil team and placed 59th out of 68 competitors in the women’s open division. This is Wylde’s first international iQFoil event. Wylde is a three-time Stand-Up Paddleboard World Champion.
“I have really enjoyed being here and learning as much as I can,” said Wylde in the Oct. 29 press release. “Foil Windsurf racing is new to me, so I am proud of the way I sailed for the amount of experience I have and am really motivated to improve. Onwards and upwards!”
The iQFoil athletes are competing in the 2021 Gulf Championships (Open Windfoil and IQ Foil Nationals) which began today and will continue through Nov. 14.
US Sailing Announces Selection Process for 2022 Youth Sailing World Championships
By: JORDAN B. DARLING
BRISTOL, R.I.— US Sailing has released an outline for the 2022 selection season. The International Selection Committee will choose one athlete in each of the single-handed classes and one team of two for each of the double-handed classes to represent their country at the 51st Youth Sailing World Championship to be held in The Hauge, Netherlands, July 8-15, 2022. The selection of athletes will be based on a two-event qualification system with the first event for ILCA 6, Nacra15, iQFoil, and Formula Kite at the US Open Sailing Series- Clearwater Feb. 4-6, 2022. The event will be hosted at the Clearwater Yacht Club. The first event for 29er and i420 will be at the Midwinters East Feb. 19-21, 2022, at Miami Yacht Club in Miami, Florida. The second event for ILCA 6 will be March 25-27, 2022, at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, while all other classes will have their second event at the ODP Midwinters West March 25-27, 2022, at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach. US Sailing said if any of the events were postponed or canceled, the one event would count as the sole qualifier for the class. The final finishing position, not net points, will determine the team’s points for the event, with 10th place equaling out to 10 points. Athletes have to compete in both events to qualify for their class. The championship set for July 8-15, 2022, in the Netherlands will be held in the North Sea. World Sailing said that the sea has varying conditions that will provide a “true test” of athletes’ ability on the water with varied wind conditions and challenging tidal patterns.
Qualification for the Championships will be completed with the following equipment:
Boy’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6 Girl’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6 Mixed or Boys’ Two Person Dinghy – i420 Girls’ Two Person Dinghy – i420 Boys’ Skiff – 29er Girls’ Skiff – 29er Mixed Multihull – Nacra15 Boy’s Windsurfer – iQFoil* Girl’s Windsurfer — iQFoil* Boy’s Kites – Formula Kite Girl’s Kites – Formula Kite
Back the Bid #SailtoLA
By: JORDAN B. DARLING
LOS ANGELES.— World Sailing kicked off a campaign to reinstate sailing in the 2028 Paralympic Games held in Los Angeles.
The organization has outlined strategic priorities to increase participation worldwide by 2023 and meet the standards set by the International Paralympic Committee to place a bid.
By 2023 World Sailing is hoping to increase worldwide participation to 45 nations on six continents; increase youth participation (below the age of 30) to 20 percent of total athletes; grow the number of female participants to 30 percent, and, ultimately, achieve gender parity. Part of the campaign is a social media push, ‘Back the Bid’ #SailtoLA, which has gained traction on social media with prominent sailors posting photos of themselves holding signs that say Back the Bid #SailtoLA to show their support for the sport to be reinstated to the games.
Para sailing made its debut at the 1996 Olympics in Georgia and continued to be a part of the program until 2016, when it was announced that Para sailing would not be a part of the Tokyo 2020 program.
World Sailing placed a reinstatement bid for Paris 2024 but was turned down by the IPC after the committee chose to keep the program from Tokyo 2020.
The IPC has yet to confirm the bid process for Los Angeles 2028, but World Sailing said they would continue to proactively work on its campaign to build support for Para sailing worldwide.
At the Hansa World Championships Oct. 2-9, 181 Para sailors represented 23 nationals from six continents. Over the past five years, the number of nations participating in Para sailing has increased by 30 percent, according to World Sailing. There are 750 Para sailors registered with World Sailing as of 2021, with 15 percent under the age of 30 and women making 20 percent of all registered Para sailors.
“We know that other major sports looking for reinstatement are already drawing up their bid plans,” said David Graham, CEO of World Sailing, in an Oct. 26 press release. “We know that IPC President, Andrew Parsons, has already publicly declared that the IPC will be looking at potential ‘new sports’ following the successful introduction of new, youth-focused sports at Tokyo 2020. We are on track to achieve our strategic priorities by 2023, and we are taking nothing for granted.”
