How can we innovate in furniture design?

Insights People love spending time on city parks, doing various activities and using different objects, often brought to the park by themselves. Picnic Sunbathing Relaxing Hanging out Laying down Reading

Goals We decided to create a piece of outdoor furniture able to provide people their own space inside the park, being in some way a personal object. Then it must be - Weather resistant - Quickly dryable - Soiling resistant - Able to be stand-up, built-in, lay-down - Visually mix-up with the environment - Light and easy to move - Modular to the infinite - Cheap

Creation The team set the main elements of the design and started brainstorming with them Structure Seat Attach system

Prototyping

3d modelling

As the project was ambitious since it was thought, a lot of big decisions had to be taken -Proper materials - size - structureThe best way to get the concept to evolve was through a serious of tests, from CAD to real world. Building mock-ups and proving the different materials and configurations. Creating with the hands.

Experimentation

Product Architecture

Experimentation showed how equilibrium of the chairs depends a lot on the junctions, that’s why we focused on the design of special pieces that guarantee the stability of the structure. We also developed the furniture to storage and display the chairs on the park. An stand with a totem identifies and explains how to use the seat, while keeps them together safe from the rain.

How can we improve life quality for a marginalized population?

Insights We worked with “Escuela Taller para Ciegos an institution dedicated to work with blind people, focused on training them to promote social inclusion. They have different activities, from sports to physiological support. Our team choose to focus on leisure, since gaming is a big humanizing agent.

Creation The first task was adapting a sign system based on the classic board game “Serpents & Ladders.

squares dice checkers snakes & Ladders

Then the team worked together with electronic engineers in order to design and build the concept.

Prototyping

Electronic Dice

Before building a mock-up, some experimentation was carried focused on two main aspects. -gameplay - technical performanceThe feedback allowed the concept be fix and finally become a prototype builded in PMMA with incorporated sound system.

A big button on the middle of the board tells the players how many steps to give.

To indicate player’s position, SERES uses shaped geometrical shaped checkers and braille numbers.

Making joyful the journey, the players will go through the board getting higher as they get closer to the goal.

Funny sound effects are the way players experiment the snakes, ladders, and plain checkers.

IFE Packaging Team work/March-May 2012/UNAM

How can we transport a 10kg device to rural areas safely?

Insights In 2012, the IFE (Mexican public organization responsible for organizing federal elections) used some special electronic ballots for the presidential elections.

Distributed in 300 districts 1550 units 8,5 kg

The ideal packaging

is portable

is compact

can be used by everybody

Creation The main goal was to get the users to return the device within the box. A serious of models were build to test the folding sequence, in order to make it the simplest possible.

Firsts Sketches

Comfortable carry

Graphics testing

Easy to use

Small dimensions storing

Prototyping 1200 boxes were produced and distributed around Mexico.

How can we reach sustainable social dwellings?

Insights VIS (social interest homes) are the houses provided by the National Government to fulfil the housing deficit. Reducing energy consumption in this houses is socio-ethical and environmentally sustainable, that’s why the INTERFAZ research group (UIS) conducted a research which ended up showing the potential benefits that natural lighting devices have. -Healthy – Green - Economic - Social -

1Kwh 1lbCO2 electric = greenhouse energy gases 50Kwh = 1 person/month

10000 social housing units will be built in Bucarmanga

Learnings from users and experts People want a beautiful and secure device Users have troubles sharing resources they need an independent device Houses are tiny and use basic materialss the device have to be small and cheap Houses are done in record times the device must have a simple installation

Prototyping Two mock-ups where build. 1:1 scale verified the device performance This mock-up representing the entire system where built and tested all the light steps, collection, conduction and diffusion.

1:5 scale probed the installation sequence Studying the compatibility between the device and the standard architecture of social dwellings.
