‘STEEP DESCENT’: LOCUST JONES20.04 – 22.05.2013‘Steep Descent’ is the new exhibition from Locust Jones. After completing two residencies, one in Johannesburg, South Africa with William Kentridge’s print studio ‘David Krut Projects’ and the other in Hill End, NSW, Jones has created a new body of work consisting of linocuts, etchings and ceramics. Using the thriving atmosphere of Johannesburg as stimulus, Jones immersed himself in the foreign environment and created prints reflecting on his experiences from the street. The ceramic works, created in Hill End in collaboration with potter Lino Alvarez allowed Jones to take his drawings to a 3 dimensional surface, scratching and painting into the wet clay. ‘Steep Descent’ reflects on the political, cultural, environmental and personal experiences of an artist in a country that he refers to as ‘a land of contradictions’ and ‘an infinitely exciting place to make work in’.
