With Drink in Hand

There are days in life when a man really needs a drink. In this case, the drink of choice was a tumbler of Glenfiddich scotch on the rocks. Strong enough to stop a charging rhinoceros, it gives a man a chest full of hair and the courage to do just about anything. The event that merited this gulp of double distilled and aged valor: the decision to embark on a risky, challenging, ballsy-to-say-the-least, and completely invigorating venture. It is with excitement, hope, certainty, and complete, utter terror that I announce the formation of Stemer Withington Media. The ambitious offspring of DMIX publisher Wade Withington, journalism prodigy Katerina Bizios and myself, SW Media thinks big: spreading magazines to new and untapped markets nationwide. It’s difficult to look outside the Duke walls and see a world full of opportunities. It is precisely times like these when innovation, ingenuity, and a giant-sized portion of chutzpah are the most powerful tools we have. Fearless students have been fighting the odds as underdogs: Chris Walker brazenly bounded into cyberspace with his new venture, Smarticles. Bold beauty Esha Solanki overcame incredible hardships on her path to Duke in one of the most inspiring stories on campus. Tucker Howard, president of the DKE fraternity is revamping the house’s image and reputation, bravely sterring his members in new directions. They’ve set the trend. Let’s leave our reservations behind, find the biggest glass possible, and pour a metaphoric (or literal) swig of Glenfidditch golden bravery. All it takes is a wild idea, farfetched plan, insane scheme, or whimsical dream and the courage to say, “Yes.” With a university full of so many talented, diverse, and determined people, it was never hard to find inspiration we needed to take our daring new steps. Cheers,

Publisher’s Letter

The Trilogy: Part Two I was going to toss this back with a healthy swig of scotch, but before I did, I read the warning label on the prescription bottle. I just had shoulder surgery, and turns out oxycodone and scotch should not be mixed, so I’ll leave Zak to his scotch. Anyway, if you are reading this, then you are the lucky possessor of a copy of DMIX Issue 2: The Empire Strikes Back. They say the second movie in any trilogy is always the best, since it naturally bridges the gap between parts one and three without getting caught up in either the climax or rising action. Well, to put it bluntly, we at DMIX disagree with this theory, at least in regard to our publication for this simple reason: DMIX isn’t a trilogy. With a bit of help from readers like you, and some excellent collaboration with our advertisers, we intend to keep serving you a spectacular magazine for as long as you let us. Spring break is pretty much over, and unless you’re a second-semester senior, you’re now in that long dreary tunnel with only LDOC and Ludacris providing a bit of light at the end. Recognizing that we are almost in the doldrums of the school year, I decided to change my look. Over break I decided to grow a beard. And at the somewhat harsh insistence of my friends, I will be visiting Sherry at Wavelengths to get that removed, and to get the pre-graduation haircut my mother has demanded. As a second-semester senior, this is prime time to kick back and have fun. Whenever I need a fun diversion, Michael at Hunky Dory has my back with a variety of goods and records that will have me relaxing in no time. And when it’s time to party, there’s no better place than Parizades. But what I’m most looking forward to during these few last months is putting together Issue 3 in time for summer. Oh yes, there will be an Issue 3, so look forward to that as we start the final round of school this year. But for now, enjoy Issue 2. The second part of the trilogy is the best because it is great to make something work once; but it only counts if you can do it twice. Between the support from you readers and that of the DMIX team, it hasn’t even mattered that I was somewhat handicapped part way through production. So, to you I lift this glass of water as I wash down my painkillers. And I hope you’ll drink twice for me.

THIS MONTH: COLLEGIATE 420s // GET SMART

Come Sail Away When E duardo L eal , the president of the club sailing team, is on the water, he’s truly in his element. As the weather gets warmer and the days longer, sailing is a perfect escape. DMIX writer A ndrea K orab got a chance to chat with the wave runner about regattas, recruits, and the ultimate form of relaxation. 

Collegiate 420 Get your mind out of the gutter; it’s a type of sailboat. More specifically, a two-man type of dinghy the club sailing team uses to ride the waves. by Andrea Korab Life should be a breeze, shouldn’t it? Eduardo Leal, the president of Duke’s Club Sailing, has been taking this mantra to heart ever since the tender age of ten. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Eddy was the first one in his family to fall into the fine art of sailing when he went to a summer camp years ago with one of his friends.

18 | DMIX

Ever since, he has been competing in regattas. “At first, I was shy and didn’t like competing, but then I slowly got used to it, and now it’s what I work toward as my end goal.” Competition helps put practice into perspective, a phrase most of us know all too well. Two years ago as a freshman, Eddy got involved with the club

sailing team and fell in love with the community. “When we go to races, we get to leave for the whole weekend—soon we’re going to Charleston—and we get to meet people from all over the states. One of my favorite experiences with Duke Sailing was during a regatta in Charleston over Halloween weekend during my freshman year. The current was particularly bad that day and no one could get their boats off the starting line, so everyone just sat on the dock and just chilled. It was great. I hung out with people from different schools from all over the country. It was like we were a family.” The club is open to people of all skill levels, and, best of all, experience has never been a requirement to join. “One of the biggest misconceptions about Duke Sailing is that people think they have to have experience when they join. You don’t! We’ve had people who became presidents of the club who started sailing freshman year. We’re always looking for new people.” Being on a sailboat and feeling a rush of wind through your hair, and a light mist from the water gently spraying you, beats going to meetings or doing homework in Perkins any day of the week. It sounds like the best escape and tension reliever anyone could have, especially if you get to wear a snazzy Duke sailing uniform while you do it.

Chris Walker

Get Smart Here’s the summary: Duke entreprenuer Chris Walker keeps it short, sweet, and suave by Kenny Gould photo by Maximilian Friedauer

It’s fitting that—while sitting in a mind-numbing neuroscience class learning about the brain’s electrical firings—adventure-seeker, entrepreneur, and Matt McConaughey dopplegänger Chris Walker would be struck with a lightning-like bolt of inspiration. “I was sitting there, reading this molecular biology paper on how X phosphorylates Y which activates Z, or something like that,” Walker recalls. “The first thing that came to mind was, ‘Man, I wish I had SparkNotes again!’” At that moment, getsmarticles. com, a Wikipedia meets SparkNotes for academic articles, was born. Struggling with a paper? Smarticles has you covered. Just like Wikipedia’s mass collaboration model, users contribute information to the site based on their areas of expertise. The result is a database of concise and distilled paper abstracts that makes thorny articles more accessible. For Walker, the road to success hasn’t been without risk. To focus on the growing site, he switched off the pre-med track his senior fall. It’s a story that’s eerily reminiscent of Mark Zuckerberg, who dropped out of Harvard to pursue what is now the multi-billion dollar company Facebook (an anecdote Walker is quick to cite). In the first months of his venture, the payoffs have begun to roll in. “During finals last fall, I honestly had people knocking on my door at 1:30 a.m. to ask if the site was running yet. I’ve gotten messages from people at other universities, looking for information on Smarticles because they ran across the site or were directed there by a Duke friend.” There’s a long way to go, however, Walker’s not deterred, even for a flash. The website has gone beyond just a hobby; he views it as his career. In the next two years, Walker intends to expand Smarticles to North Carolina’s top 35 universities, before moving on to Silicon Valley. He hopes to take his idea to the national, and eventually global, level. “It’s way more interesting than grad school,” says Walker about the company. “I’m always up for an adventure.” To learn more, visit getsmarticles.com.

SAVOR THIS MONTH: SAVE THE ALES // THE PERFECT PLATE

DMIX | 21

Hold my beer and watch this... Beer. It’s what (used to) shower you at tailgate. It’s what gets chugged out of solo cups during drinking games. It’s what is being shot gunned on the main quad on LDOC. It’s a beverage of celebration and community, and it’s something that’s revolutionizing the drinking culture of America. So DMIX asks, “Isn’t it about time you learned what’s good?”

The Words Aroma To decide whether your beer is aromatic, just take a whiff of the beer once it’s poured and determine if you can smell the hops, the malt, the fruit, the grain flavors, or not much at all. Use this word if the flavors are well pronounced and the taste matches those smells. Color There is an official standard scale, but for casual purposes beer color can range from a light straw color to coppery brown to almost black. Here are the general guidelines: Pale lagers are the lightest beer color, pale ales are light brown to copper, dark lagers are dark brown, and the darkest beers are porters and stouts. Hops One of the main ingredients used in the brewing process of beer, hops are described as making a crisp, bitter, and even herbal taste. Ranked on a bitterness scale (called IBU for shor)t beers can range from little bitterness (5) to very bitter (100). Typically expect lagers, porters, and stouts to be the least bitter and IPAs to have the hoppiest flavor. Maltiness Malt is an important part of the beer flavoring process. If there are higher quantities of malt in the beer, there will a roasted, earthy, or smoky taste depending on the malt used. Darker beers tend to have “deep” malt and roasted tastes. Sweetness Used to describe a beer that has a hint of fruit or malt in the taste. This doesn’t mean it’s like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, but describes a beer fill of natural fruit flavors or sweet malt, not necessarily sugary tastes. A beer lacking a sweet taste would be described as dry.

22 | DMIX

The Types

Fig.22.1 Go ahead, sniff your beer. If you smell fruit, grain, or hops, then expect well defined flavors.

India Pale Ale (IPA) Characterized by a copper color and more hops to add a kick of flavor, this style of beer is very popular in the United States. The range of IPAs can be very wide depending on the ingredients used and the location of the brewing.

Porter/Stout A dark beer brewed with darker malts, medium bitterness, and tends to be stronger in alcohol content and taste. This type of beer can have a wide range of flavors and added ingredients, from espresso or sweet stouts to bitter porters.

Lager Can have a wide variety of beers within this category, but a typical Lager is crisp and light, pale in color, and lacking distinct hoppy or sweet flavors.

Fig.22.2 Look at it. Color tells you what kind of beer you’re drinking.

Fig.22.3 Hops give beer a crisp, herbal taste.

Fig.22.4 Not like the shakes, malt makes beer taste earthy or roasted.

Fig.22.5 A beer isn’t ever going to taste like candy. Sweetness describes fruit flavors or malt, not sugary tastes.

Make it a Micro Long known as Budweiser Country, a new trend is sweeping the nation: specialty microbrews. Currently there are three breweries in Durham, all within one mile of each other. Triangle Brewing Company, FullSteam, and Bull City Burger and Brewery. These locations brew their own specialty beers locally, serve them on site, and rotate beers seasonally. Keep your eye out for these Raleigh brewing companies when shopping for local beers: Roth Brewing Company, Foothills, Carolina Brewing Company, and LoneRider. These locally brewed beers are only found in the The Triangle and are served on draft at most local bars, including James Joyce, Satisfactions, Tyler’s Taproom, Alivia’s Grill, and the Armadillo Grill. Not only will you find local beers on tap around Durham, but you can also get bottles, and even growlers—half-gallon jugs that can be refilled for a cheaper price at the brewery or places like Sam’s Quick Shop. If you haven’t tried a local beer yet, and are over 21, go out and grab a pack. If you’re on your way out for the night, there are always local beer specials at the bar. Here are our favorites:

Plate and Pitchfork

Dining in Style A collegiate’s advice by Margaux McAulay

Pulling together local and organic ingredients to craft seasonally-themed, creative culinary dishes, Plate & Pitchfork perfectly pairs sophistication and affordability. The spring semester menu included venison osso bucco, braised duck in Clementine glaze, vegetarian shepard’s pie, and bouillabaisse. Talk about spring awakening. We can’t wait to see what they bring us for summer. Perched above Alpine Bagels, the new eatery has not only replaced Faculty Commons, but has surpassed it in every way. Since its start, Plate & Pitchfork has steadily gained the attention and approval of the Duke student community. Praised for its diverse menu, ranging from college staples like pizza and the perfect burger, to the more refined seared salmon hot pot, it’s the on-campus eatery that can make the perfect plate for any student. Fully aware of its audience, the restaurant includes vegetarian or vegan dishes, as well as a newly acquired license for wine and beer. With a large, cultured main dining area as well as a private room for large parties, Plate & Pitchfork is the go-to spot for everything from an oncampus date night to a birthday dinner with a big group of friends. If you haven’t experienced P&P yet, grab a couple of close friends and head over to this main quad eatery. Too busy for a sit down meal? You can now call 919.660.3927 and get take-out before heading off to the library. Open on the weekdays from 5:00 pm to 10:00pm, Plate & Pitchfork is the ultimate escape from a night full of studying or the perfect midweek procrastination. No matter where you are on campus, the restaurant is only a short walk. Just remember one crucial tip: Go with a big appetite. Questions, concerns, comments? E-mail facultchef@gmail.com.

Porn to Rule Why porn is good for more than just a man’s alone time

P

orn: it’s not about sex. Well, okay, it sort of is, but it’s about other things too. The multi-billion dollar adult entertainment industry dominates the Internet, and with it, most of our lives. According to CNN, porn is at least partially responsible for the creation of a variety of commonplace features on the web, including: streaming and Flash video that enables YouTube and CollegeHumor videos; digital media capture and sharing that let us post embarrassing pictures from last night’s party on Facebook; credit card verification for online shopping; and user-generated content and social networking sites such as Reddit, Tumblr, and of course Facebook. Porn has been on the cutting edge of information-sharing technologies since the VHS player was created in the 1970s, and it’s been responsible in some form for approximately 100% of the allnighters you pulled because you spent too much time on TextsFromLastNight or Facebook, instead of actually working on your paper.

o why is an industry that helped shape S our world, while at the same time providing a type of entertainment enjoyed by almost half of the Internet-using population, still considered shameful and taboo? Ours is the first generation to be raised on the Internet, and the last to remember a time before the wonderful wide web. Porn is as natural as instant messaging, Googling, and tagging photos. It’s time to understand that there is nothing inherently wrong with porn. Having an active fantasy life is an important part of being a healthy human, and a sexual being. Regular masturbation is shown to not only decrease the rate of prostate cancer in men, but also allows men and women to better understand their bodies and minds, which can only lead to better sex. Porn exists as a safe avenue for exploring of ideas and positions, while leaving behind the risks and prohibitions of everyday life.

I

f your high school health class was anything like mine, you may have been taught the ridiculous myth that women aren’t interested in sexually explicit images and aren’t even aroused by porn. Welcome to the modern world, where the audience for porn is becoming increasingly female. There is no reason why women should be any less interested in porn than men, and trends in the production and viewing of explicit films are reflecting this. Research done at McGill and Northwestern Universities

26 | DMIX

over the past few years has indicated women are just as aroused as men while viewing films. Hustler reported that women are responsible for 56% of purchases made at the adult film company’s stores, while major porn database Porn Hub has added a “Female Friendly” category to their guide. Some might argue porn is degrading to women, but women such as Candida Royalle and Maria Beatty are producing and directing porn meant for women. Others such as Camille Crimson are pioneering a new direction in porn that highlights the

beautiful aspects of sex. ell, porn isn’t only for when you’re H alone. Watching porn with your partner can be a huge turn on. It breaks

down barriers and let’s you express inner desires. I recommend renting a full-length movie from Cherry Pie in Chapel Hill, or sampling an assortment of amateur and professional videos on a free database such as Porn Hub or You Porn. Pair your porn with a fine wine and candles and you have the makings a fantastic (and probably exhausting) night.

THE CLASSICS You can’t go wrong with a tried and true dating classic. Dining Out A fun, romantic dinner is always a safe bet. Our favorite spot is Durham’s best French restauraunt, Vin Rouge.

Dining In This works especially well if you live on Central or off campus. Cook something simple but delicious, like spaghetti or salmon on a bed of rice.

DATE LIKE YOU’RE IN COLLEGE

I

t’s a Thursday night and you’re out with your boys at Shooters. Across the room, on the dance floor, you see that hottie you had your eye on from econ last semester. In true Shooter’s style, you slip in behind her and begin to grind, then swap sweat and saliva as you start making out. You’re in utter bliss. By the next song, however, her friends have come and swept her away, leaving you sad, alone, and longing for more. You don’t understand. You’re a nice guy, what did you do wrong? Didn’t she recognize you? Maybe you’re upset or maybe you’ve moved on to the next girl, but maybe, just maybe, you want something...more. The practice of asking a girl out seems to have been lost somewhere between the cage at Shooters and the taxi ride back to campus, but let’s face it: Eventually the hookup culture gets old. It’s time to take the leap and go out on a real conversation-based date. Here are some tips on how to go about dating at Duke, where the stakes don’t need to be high, nor the strings attached.

Drinks For casual, classy fun, nothing tops going out for a few rounds of drinks. The bar at Blu has delicious appetizers to go with their fantastic cocktails and wine list.

Movies Pick a hilarious comedy like Your Highness (April 8), terrifying horror like Scream 4 (April 15), or classic romance like Water for Elephants (April 22) for the perfect chance to get close in the dark. Make sure to go for dinner or a walk afterwards to get a chance to talk.

DATING TIPS FOR YOUR STYLE For the Minimalist

For the Cameron Crazy For the Sight-Seer

For the Artsy

For the Hopeless Romantic

Dating doesn’t need to be outlandish or expensive. Spending the night in, watching a movie can be just as fun as going out. Pick something neutral that you are bound to both enjoy—nothing ridiculously romantic or hardcore.

Suggest waiting in line together at a basketball game, and you are guaranteed to spend at least two hours together. Plus, you get to share something you love.

Check out the next Night at the Nasher or a concert at Cat’s Cradle. There are some great venues in and around Durham with cheap student tickets, so it’s easy to find a performance you’ll both love.

Go all out: Rent the top of the Chapel. Yes, it’s extravagent, but it’s something to keep in mind for the ultimate first date or a special anniversary, for those of you already tied down.

Go on a walk. Exploring places you may not have been before, like the forest or gardens, or even the E-quad (if you’re Trinity students, then you’ve got yourselves an adventure) can be a lot of fun. And, if things go well, you can knock off a graduation requirement or two in the process.

Sexual Selection

The Sexual Selection DMIX sexologist Wade Withington reveals the hottest bedroom tricks. This spring it’s all about covering up.

When it comes to condoms, put on eight and get tested

Everyone from Asher Roth to Van Wilder knows STI protection is a great idea. There’s nothing less sexy than a raging HPV outbreak, so a quick way to maintain your love life is to stay as clean as a preacher’s sheets. Condoms are widely available on campus and can be obtained for free at the Student Health Center. However, what’s often overlooked is the importance of regular testing for STIs. You’ve probably seen this year’s Wellness Center poster which reads “How did this happen to me? I though people at Duke didn’t have STIs,” and now the kid has the herp. Condoms don’t always protect against everything, and many STIs are not readily apparent. So make sure to work a regular check up into your routine. Going once or twice a year can be enough. If you are starting a new relationship or thinking about having unprotected sex with a steady partner, get one beforehand so you both know you’re literally starting with a clean slate. Protect yourself and your partner by contacting Duke Student Health and setting up an appointment for a screening. It easy to arrange either by phone, online registration, or walk in, and they will screen you for most STIs. In addition, take a look at Know Your Status in the Bryan Center. They offer free HIV testing on Mondays, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Good to Go At some point or another, everyone runs into a sexual situation where there is just a little too much friction. This can be problematic and can easily turn a night of fantastic passion into a night of awkwardness. Personal lubricants are your new best friend: They enhance the experience for everyone. Whether engaging in vaginal or anal sex, or just a hand job, adding a bit of lubrication is never a bad move. There are a wide variety of options to choose from as lubes come in three bases: water, silicon, and oil. Oil-based lubricants are generally not recommended because they pose a high risk for infection if used in vaginal or anal sex, or if they are not washed off quickly. Silicon is better. It is sterile and inert, meaning it will not cause infections or harm if swallowed, and it is not water soluble. So, you can use it in the hot tub or shower, but be aware it will be difficult to wash out of the sheets. Water-based lubes are the most common and popular. They are easily washed away, won’t ruin your sheets, and generally aren’t harmful if swallowed. However, they are absorbed by skin and you will need to occasionally reapply if the session goes on for a while. If you have a steady partner, it can be fun to take them 28 | DMIX

out and choose one or two to try together. Or just go purchase a bottle to keep in “That Drawer”. Either way, a good personal lube is an essential part of your basic sex kit.

Blind Sided Sometimes, we are so overwhelmed by visual stimulation that we completely forget to use our other senses. In the bedroom (or possibly in the library, if you follow this column) obviously our sense of touch is a pretty big deal. With an attentive or skilled lover, it is possible to think as they work magic with their fingers, lips, and bodies: “Oh God! Could this feel any better?” Good news, everyone: It could. We’ve all heard of the blind man who becomes adept at walking just using his hearing. Or the hearing-impaired person who reads lips and senses vibrations.

Losing one sense can often lead to the developement another. I don’t recommend taking drastic measures like putting out your eyes, but I do think blindfolds can lead to a thorough understanding of your partner’s body. Use something comfortable, such as a sleep mask, bandana, or scarf, and make sure it fits securely. It’s best to start slow, such as with non-erotic massage. This will give you time to get used to doing everything by touch. Both partners should be blindfolded, letting the tension of not seeing your partner create a climactic atmosphere. By not speaking with your partner, you’ll be forced to pay extra attention to how their body responds to your touch. Gradually work your way into foreplay. What you notice with your hands and ears will amaze you, and by following their body’s subtle telltales you will be able to create a thoroughly erotic and exciting experience.

What to do:

What’s burning:

Keep your body straight while you support yourself on your toes and forearms (similar to a pushup position). Relax your head and neck so that you are able to stare at the floor, and make sure to keep all parts of your body from sagging..

Plank exercises strengthen your core, which helps to improve your stability. The burning sensation is your hidden six pack.

1

Stay hydrated and go green. Instead of buying a new water bottle every time you work out, just get a refillable bottle and stash it in your fridge so it’s chilled

60 sec

What to do:

What’s burning:

Sit with your back against the wall so that your body is at a 90-degree angle and your feet are shoulder-width apart. You should feel like you are sitting in a chair but missing any support for your bottom.

While you are working your entire lower body (glutes, hamstrings, and calves), you should feel the burn primarily in your quadriceps.

Hold for 20 to 30 seconds. As you get stronger, try holding for 45 to 60 seconds. Repeat this exercise two to three times daily, but give your legs time to recover between sets.

3

Push yourself upright using only your legs, and squeeze your glutes as you stand up.

Repeat this exercise in three sets, with 10 squats per set.

The Squat

What to do: • Start with your feet shoulder width apart and arms in front of you. With or without weights, carefully bend at your knees as if you were going to sit in a chair. Make sure to squat low enough so that your thighs are almost parallel to the floor, but avoid squatting too low or you’ll lose your balance or potentially hurt yourself.

What’s burning: Thighs, butt, hamstrings…need the list continue? This is a great way to get completely toned and sexy legs. You might also feel the burn in your lower back and calves.

Push Ups

What to do: •

Begin on the balls of your feet with your hands shoulderwidth apart. For a challenging push up keep your feet close together. Beginners can place their feet about a foot apart. Keep a smooth line—avoid raising your bottom or dropping your lower back.

As you build muscle and gain strength, you will be able to perform a perfect push up. Make sure you don’t hang your head – instead face forward. If you don’t typically do pushups, start with just 10 a day, until you can increase to two sets of 20 – 25 daily.

Lower your torso until your elbows form 90 degree angles. Slowly raise yourself back up and repeat the exercise.

What’s burning: This may be your least favorite exercise, but it is one of the most effective for a toned upper body and strong core. Push ups target a majority of the upper body, including the chest, biceps, and back. Your abdominal muscles also get a workout as your core helps to stabilize your body in the push up position.

5 •

It’s all about the upper arms and biceps, giving you tone without too much bulk.

TIPS • Music is a great motivator! Listening to up-tempo, fast-paced songs is perfect for intense workouts. • Use these exercises as short study breaks, or even do a couple during commercial breaks of your favorite television shows.

Starting with your right hand, curl the weight up in a comfortable arch, bringing your hand all the way to your right shoulder. Flex your bicep at the top before lowering the weight down slowly to your side. Alternate arms, doing three sets of 10 reps.

Lunges

What to do:

What’s burning:

Stand straight with your hands on your hips or hold weights.

Take one step slightly longer than a normal walking step forward, and lower your body so that your front knee forms a 90 degree angle and your back knee nearly touches the floor.

Lunges are key to getting the derrière of your dreams; you should feel the burn in your quadriceps and buttocks. Tip: To tone your arms and work on your balance while you lunge, try holding a water bottle in each hand.

Stand back up and repeat this exercise, alternating between your left and right leg.

• Stay hydrated and stretch! • Know your limits. If something is physically painful or you feel any strain, stop immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

These men are the unrecognized gods, the overlooked bad asses, the brushed aside ncaa national champions. They don’t get the fawning fans, the famed stadium, or the million dollar professional contacts. Their coach doesn’t go by one letter, nor does he have an entire tower and perfectly shellacked hair. Really, the only thing these men share with Duke basketball is that the rest of America is usually rooting against them. And that’s the way they like it.

S

itting across from me at Revolution restauarant are the stars of the Duke lacrosse team: Justin Turri, C.J. Costabile, and Jake Tripucka. They just came from practice and are exhausted, starving, and casually underdressed. They are, for lack of any better description, cool. Laidback and chill, they’re articulate, intelligent, talented, and, even disheveled in a t-shirt and jeans,

36 | DMIX

they draw the looks of every girl in their immediate vicinity. They’re not the kind to dress up or put on airs. The DMIX photo shoot, they say, was a new type of experience. Sure they might get a couple of teasing quips from some of their teammates, but it seems they liked the transformation from hard-hitting lacrosse stars to suave gents. Plus, they have the looks and confidence to pull it off. Their most striking feature? Their almost-to-a-fault modesty. Getting them to admit that they work just as hard, or deserve even half the attention, of the basketball team is nearly impossible. And it seems even after a national win, the team can’t get much respect. “Most analysts, when they look at the game, don’t expect much from us this year,” says Turri. “So, we’re really taking that angle. We love to be the underdogs and prove people wrong.”

T

he team’s fall from grace— the infamous 2006 party at the unassuming shanty (now demolished) on Buchanan, the false rape charges by a stripper called Crystal, the “tragic rush to accuse” by an overzealous and biased District Attorney—forced the Duke jersey, and everyone who wore it, into social ostracism. The lacrosse players became pariahs, scorned and scorched by almost every major news media in the nation and the burning ire of Nancy Grace (the wise and infallible). Their reputations sullied and 2006 season cancelled, it seemed unlikely that a comeback was even possible. Yet, in 2007, the team rallied and returned to the NCAA Finals, narrowly losing to Johns Hopkins 12-11. Then, last year, the team with the final remaining trace of the scandal (the 2006 freshman) was crowned NCAA Champions. It should follow that any lingering stigma from their sordid story should be wiped away with bottlepopping celebration of a new, dominating team. It was a step in the right direction,

all part of an unofficial master plan to reclaim the respect they deserve. Phase One: Tarnish reputation with a widely publicized sex scandal. I think we can all agree Phase One was a tremendous success. Phase Two: Wait five years while the public generally loathes you, then win a national championship to remind them that you still got it. Check. Phase Three: Win it again and make them fall back in love with you. Doing it once can be a fluke, but doing it twice? Now that’s what separates true champions from the one-hit wonders. This year’s is the first team completely purged of the ’06 stigma; it’s the first team we can cheer for without any twinge of judgment. It’s a team full of people who came to Duke to make a difference. “I wanted to be part of the resurgence,” remembers Tripucka. “You want to be the underdogs, the blue collar guys who came to work and who want to get this program back on its feet.“

Their restraint is paying off: They have more teammates on honor roll than any other lacrosse team, and with more than 40 members, still manage to average a GPA of over 3.0. The three give most of the credit to their coach, John Danowski. Turri says, “He really focuses on the whole spectrum, not just making a great lacrosse team but for making everybody great at everything we do, outside of lacrosse especially. He’s been really good for all of us.” More nods of agreement.

T

he food finally arrives to very loud sounds of approval by the starving athletes. Watching these men scarf down large quantities of steak in what seemed like one breath is a legitimately impressive event. I’d venture to say that skinny Japanese

“as long as we as a team keep preaching the right things and doing the right things around campus, we can get the same type of respect back.” But a big question still looms over the team: Can they repeat their win? Costabile, the man who lived out a sportsman’s greatest dream—shooting the championship winning goal in the final seconds—admits it’s not an easy or guaranteed win. “The sky’s the limit, but there are a lot of roadblocks we have to go through.” Turri chimed in, “We’re young. We’ll be a work in progress for a while; right now we’re at a point where we’re good. By the end of the season we want to be at a point that we’re great.” The guys nodded their agreement.

B

ut to be an underdog, people actually have to want you to overcome the odds and win. To reach their goal, they first have to win back their audience. As a team they’ve been working to represent the values of Duke (the good ones) on and off the field. “As long as we as a team keep preaching the right things and doing the right things around campus, we can get the same type of respect back,” says Turri. And they’re not just spitting administration-approved public relations either. They’ve turned into a Prohibition-era team for the preseason, giving up alcohol and focusing solely on the game and their academic responsibilities.

eating champs could learn a thing or two. The only time they set down their forks was when they were laughing, and in their defense, they laugh a lot—about everything. The three seem close as brothers, finishing each other’s thoughts and creating a conversation that, to any outsider, seems like an unintelligible jumble of words and chuckles. It’s that tight bond that’s the key sign of a team that can function as one cohesive unit, which, as any sports analyst will tell you, is a prerequisite to taking home the championship trophy. It’s more than the bond of the stereotypical “lax bro” persona. It’s based on more than chugging beers and going to Northeastern prep schools. Turri, Costabile, and Tripucka couldn’t be further from that image. They all went to public schools, they all practice religiously, and they never hold anything back. A big part of the problem is the misconceptions surrounding the sport. “Different analysts or commentators hype lacrosse up as an action sport like the X-Games,” explains Tripucka. “Why can’t it be advertised like basketball? It’s always advertised as this X-Game where guys are doing crazy stuff. That’s where kids get continued on page

victoria scott The impossibly charming, undeniably fun, and, yes, delightfully nerdy (with an I-don’t-give-a-damn flair) Tucker Howard is a one-man fraternity renovation machine. He’s in his second term as president of one of campus’ least respected—at least if collegeacb is any sort of reference—fraternities: DKE. But slowly and surely, that’s starting to change, as the dead air of DKE is being replaced by energetic, outgoing, and fun new recruits. Tucker knows it’s not an easy recovery. “The reputation of DKE is the worst thing we have working against us.” During rush, totally false rumors were splattered and bumped across the online boards: “DKE is being dechartered!!!!” But despite the bad rap, DKE is on the rise. “With the pledge class and the people we took this year, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.” But don’t expect to see the DKE’s controlling campus, “Even if overnight we became the most wildly popular fraternity,

40 | DMIX

I think we would still keep our low numbers. I have lots of respect for PiKapp, which came out of nowhere a few years ago and is now dominatingly huge, but I don’t think that’s what we’re looking for.” “I used to say this like it was a bad thing, but now I actually like it. We are the smallest chapter, and we are going to increase in size, but having those kinds of small numbers, you really know everybody and there’s not a single one of the guys that I wouldn’t do anything for. I’ve never been closer with a group of people. We have fun, we have parties, but we also have that bond.” The brothers of DKE have succeeded in creating something unique: the I-am-who-Iam self-assurance of our 30s combined with the fun, wild, and sometimes alcohol-induced decisions of our 20s. It’s the best of both worlds, and it’s the reason DKE is rebounding from the brink of frat-astrophy and emerging as a chill, “hip to be square” hotspot.

WARNING: This is not an inherently happy story. However, it is a story with a happy ending. To say that Esha Solanki, the gorgeous, vivacious, sugary-sweet girl you see in these photos has had it rough, would be both a colossal understatement and a slight against her incredible success. 

The decks have been stacked, and not in her favor. Yet her smile is unshakeable, her determination steadfast. She didn’t

spiral downward when her father was incarcerated for white-collar business crimes, or even when he returned an abusive alcoholic and left the country to marry a woman he met online. Nor did she give up when her mother tragically passed away on Esha’s 15th birthday. She didn’t let working four jobs stop her from raising her younger sister, or from being her high school’s valedictorian, homecoming queen, and prom queen (or being in show choir, band, and student council). Hell, she didn’t even stop dancing when doctors diagnosed her with Degenerative Disc Disease, a condition that usually doesn’t occur until a person’s 60’s, and has a strong possibility of paralyzing its victim. And yet, as I talk to her during

her photo shoot, she smiles humbly and says, “I’m doing what I have to do.” Then she giggles as the photographer asks to give him her best sexy face. She gives a contorted expression that looks like a woman who is ready to punch a man that slapped her ass, and then suddenly has to sneeze. She only holds it for a second before bursting out in another round of giggles and ‘Oh my god’s. It’s alright that her sexy face didn’t pan out, the only emotion she usually shows is joy. Her everpresent, pearly-white simper, the same one that won her the coveted Miss Madison Central and Best Smile awards back in high school, is absolutely irresistible. But despite her girlish charm, Esha insists she’s a lone wolf. “I don’t really get close to people,” she confides. “I don’t have close

friends, I just kind of go along on my own.” She doesn’t say it sadly or with any twinge of regret; it’s just a fact, one of the rare statements not punctuated by her giggle.

“I’m doing what I have to do.”

“In some ways it’s a fault,” she admits, “but in a lot of ways I’m like my mother. She was going through a lot and was a very positive person and would always smile, no matter what.” Even during the nearly unbearable times, Esha weathered through with a smile. “One day my older sister asked my mother, ‘How can you smile?’ and she said, ‘You just never know when someone is going through it worse that you.’ That stuck with me forever.” Esha’s mother, Nilima, was as good as a person can be. “She was the most beautiful woman,” she recalls. “Absolutely the strongest DMIX | 45

woman I’ve ever heard of.” Esha’s father, on the other hand, was not. An unfaithful husband and dishonest businessman, he landed himself in jail when Esha was just 14-yearsold. “It was shocking,” she says. “I could tell my mom was always worried. At the same time she was being threatened by this man who was a neighbor of ours. He would come over every night and threaten her with her life.” She pauses. “I was witness to all of this. I would sit in my room upstairs and listen.” The turmoil in the house prevented Esha from focusing on schoolwork. She was scared. Nilima became so frightened she became forgetful. “She would forget to pick me up from school because she lived in constant fear. You could see it in her face. She would put a table in front of the door at night.” Even with her mother’s exhausting schedule, and her inability to be there at any of Esha’s choir or band concerts, she still managed to teach her daughter the finer parts of life. “Every time it rained, she made me go out and play in the rain; she would get mad if I sat inside doing homework. If I went to bed before midnight she was like ‘That is so unteenage-like’ and she would wake me up and we would go at 3:00 in the morning to Backyard Burgers for dessert. She taught me how to make the most of everything.” On Esha’s 15th birthday, her mother’s car stalled on the interstate, ending in a fatal crash. “Tears rolled down my face,” she remembers. “I was uncontrollable.” Esha stayed strong, taking on the cooking and cleaning tasks, becoming a parent to her younger sister Azani. It wasn’t a cold, or unfeeling strength; no one could accuse Esha of being hardhearted. “I had a younger sister who looked up to me and meant so much to me,” she explains. She couldn’t rely on her absentee father, so she had no choice but to forge ahead

herself. “If I ever saw my father, he would be really drunk and semiabusive. I remember having to climb out of the window to get to school in 11th grade.”

“Knowing that you have the ability to make other people’s days. That’s the kind of thing that can keep you going.”

Esha admits to occasionally cracking under pressure. “I can’t say I never broke down. I had way too many breakdowns.” Understandable for a girl working four jobs—as a barista, waitress, receptionist, and math tutor—and getting home at midnight before having to do schoolwork. Her late-night energy boost was gulping down two twoliter bottles of Mountain Dew, so it’s no miracle that she came to Duke with serious insomnia problems. “I guess a lot of people get the idea that I’m very put together,” she says coolly, “when really I’m not at all. I am really flustered all of the time.” What could possibly be keeping this unstoppable woman flustered? The answer, unfortunately is her health. She divulges that, during that time, “My health got really, really bad. I started having irregular heartbeat, I had shortness of breath. I got so thin at one point that I got hypothermia in Mississippi… which is kind of unheard of.” For right now, her health is on and off. She has what’s called Degenerative Disc Disease, which is a thinning of the discs in your back. Besides the severe pain that comes with it, it has the possibility of paralyzing any part of your body if a nerve gets pinched in the discs. Most people don’t get the disease until their sixties, but Esha has early onset. “It’s definitely a life changing thing.” 

But it’s not all doom, death, desertion, and depression in her life. Since coming to Duke, her life has changed drastically. “The biggest thing,” she says, “is becoming a Baldwin. I’ve met some of the most amazing people. They just have motivation to change things, they continued on page 58

Top Secret

TIME magazine may have labeled Mark Zuckerberg Man of the Year, but the Man of the Future will be Julian Assange—a name that, ironically, probably means nothing to you. In the age of digital transferring, downloading documents, and Julian Assange

a supposed transparency of the administration, Assange and his brainchild

Wikileaks

have devoted themselves to exposing secrets and radically reshaping the face free information.

Infamous Footage

The video begins with a rotating view of downtown Baghdad. As the black and white buildings pass slowly below, a voice can be heard identifying a party of approximately 20 gathering in a courtyard. The voice states that some are carrying weapons. White crosshairs track Rueters reporter Namir NoorEldeen as he walks with a camera, while a super imposed arrow indicates who he is and the camera he holds. No arrows point out the group striding behind him with AK-47s in hand. Permission to engage is asked for and granted. The helicopter recording the footage passes behind a building, blocking the shot. Across the radio, another solider reports a hostile shot has been fired. The helicopter continues to drift; the far side of the brick building comes slowly into view. The order to fire when clear crackles across the com lines. The steady staccato crack of a heavy machine gun booms and the area around the men erupts into dust and chaos as the group tries to flee. Most 52 | DMIX

are cut down in the initial barrage, and the firing continues. One man attempts to crawl away across the grimy street, but is met with another wall of gunfire. The dust settles as the chopper continues its circle. Only bodies remain below. A man moves slowly on the ground, obviously wounded. The copter holds its fire, pending his reach for a weapon. Minutes pass slowly. A van arrives at the scene and begins retrieving the wounded and the bodies. As permission to fire is requested, one soldier cries “Come on, let me shoot!” The scene erupts again in blood and chaos before dust clouds everything below. When it clears, little remains but a destroyed van and strewn chunks that once were buildings and people. The “Collateral Murder” video was released in April of 2010, but the events take place in July of 2007. All 39 minutes of the footage were released alongside the edited 13 minute video. It was greeted by an uproar. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange claimed it highlighted the targeting of wounded and noncombatants, both of which violate the U.S. Military’s rules of engagement. Other sources decried the video, claiming it was shown out of context and edited to favor certain viewpoints. This controversy has stuck with Wikileaks since it burst into mainstream media and earned the burning ire of governments and corporations around the globe, in response to leaked cables and (allegedly) pilfered information. The domain name Wikileaks.org was first registered in October 2006, and began publishing documents in December of the same year. A volunteer-based organization, Wikileaks was founded as a response to the jailing of Shi Tao,

a Chinese journalist imprisoned for publishing an email sent by Chinese government officials regarding the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. Dedicated to providing a space for contributors to publish information without fear of recrimination and, according to their mission statement, “Provide assistance to people of all regions who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their governments and corporations,” the organization has reportedly amassed more than 1.2 million documents, which are analyzed and subsequently released on the site. Playing middleman between whistleblowers and dissidents, Wikileaks has attracted a wide degree of media attention. Heralded by some as an essential player in the fight for freedom of information and accountability of the powerful, the site has come under fire for encouraging contributors to participate in what some construe as illegal at best, and treason at worst. Denouncing Wikileaks as a threat to national security, the United States government imprisoned American soldier Bradley Manning for his role in leaking 260,000 diplomatic cables to the organization and established the Wikileaks Task Force (appropriately abbreviated WTF) to assess approaches for dealing with the activist site. Manning’s leaked cables, a shudderinducing source of embarrassment for the US government, revealed information that officials would have preferred remain secret from not only enemies, but from allies, and those whom this government is meant to serve. Everything, from our government’s opinions on foreign dignitaries, to the status of international treaties and agreements and war logs, was

splashed across the media for all to see. Following Assange’s decision to conceal Wikileaks’ sources, critics argued that he is no better than those who hide the truth, and that the information he exposes could do as much collateral damage as that of the corporations and regimes he wishes to reveal.

Who is Julian Assange?

W

ikleaks is run by an advisory board, but the front man, face, and founder of the site is Julian Assange. Born in Queensland, Australia, in 1971, Assange first made waves as a hacker in the early 90s under the online pseudonym “Mendax.” His

pulled into the spotlight, but this time with a series of rape and molestation charges. The charge of rape originally brought against Assange in August 2010, was dismissed for lack of evidence. The decision was appealed and the case reopened in early September. Upon the appearance of a warrant, Assange turned himself into authorities and was later released on bail. Wikileaks and Assange supporters call the allegations a blatant smear campaign, an accusation stemming from the seemingly-concerted timing of the rape charges with the release of U.S. diplomatic cables. This opinion has only been reinforced by indications that the victims, who approached the police together, reportedly had never met prior. The women and Assange have had their

not go away. The US government may imprison and persecute. Funding may be withdrawn from the website. Julian Assange may be accused, tried, convicted and locked away. But the fight for the freedom of information does not start or end with any single organization or leader. And it should not. Information is a resource meant to be shared. This world is simply becoming too small and interconnected for it to be dominated by one point of view or way of living. Hiding information and concealing activities is no longer a simple matter; every day more and more people want to know, and they have the resources to find out. We barely hide information ourselves, with the way we live on Facebook, Twitter and the Internet. With enough effort,

After entering computer systems belonging to several groups—including the United States Air Force—Julian was found guilty of multiple counts of hacking and set free with a fine. He went on to create the first public Internet service provider in Australia, and eventually wrote software intended to protect human rights workers and their information. Assange no longer goes under the name Mendax, nor does he wish to be identified as a hacker, but his commitment to information sharing has persisted. Whether this is a smear campaign promoted by those who fear or hate Wikileaks, or a case of rape where the accused is using his notoriety to hide, it’s a politically charged issue. information about anyone can be found. It’s possible that the ideas of privacy and secrecy are becoming antiquated. The Digital Age is transforming into the Age of Transparency, and whether it’s Zuckerberg or Assange leading the charge, it’s a shift that impacts us all. Our lives are being recorded, in one fashion or another, and we are all accountable for our actions and decisions. Wikileaks is providing a venue for the exposure of information about the powerful, in a way that protects the weak and provides access for all. It’s leveling the playing field, and erasing the old dynasties of power and control. This is a daunting prospect for everyone, but change is always a challenge. Love it or hate it, Wikileaks has arrived. If it is overrun or shut down, another organization will replace it. People want to know, and the desire for knowledge and information is a fire than can never be extinguished. DMIX | 53

We have to dispel that by being the normal athletes who go to practice and aren’t spoiled.” Their dedication to the sport is intense, unwavering, and borderline obsessive. It’s this maniacal passion that makes them the best—there’s even buzz of Turri going pro. Ladies, before you start lining up at the alter, it should be noted that professional lacrosse players aren’t like basketball, football, baseball, or even tennis players. They don’t do

it for the cash, and if they did, they’d be living sparsely on canned tuna and hope. The pro lax players have day jobs, their matches are scheduled on the weekends. About whether he’s going to go on to the “big leagues,” Turri stops to think and says, “It’d be great to keep a stick in my hand and be playing, but it all depends on where I am in life.” He wants to go into finance, something corporate. If we learned one thing from the DMIX photo shoot, it’s that he sure cleans up nice. ●

Turri, Tripucka, and Costabile: These aren’t the lacrosse players of 2006, or the Northeastern prepsters. These men are rocksolid athletes, hell bent on their sport, ready to take the trophy that’s theirs, and fighting to change the way we think of their team. They’re the silent bad asses, the unsung stars. Everyday they work to earn our respect and our support, and right now, they deserve it.

Then I started getting really stressed about everything that was going on, and we started fighting a lot. We had an awful breakup. For three years we didn’t talk, and then this Christmas we got back together.” It’s a charming story, or at least it would be if they could actually be together. “He goes to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. So what does the future hold for this incredible inspiration? She wants to help people less fortunate than herself. Her dream is to become a doctor. “Over the years, after not getting medical attention, or really poor medical attention on Medicaid and government assistance, I am so frustrated with the system. I really feel like I want to make that difference.” She wants to go to Haiti and work with Partners in Health, doing whatever they need. “Like, if they need a surgeon, I’ll be a surgeon,” she says. And there’s nothing that’s going to stop her, even her own health. Her degenerating back means the worst activity she can do is sit down. “My doctor tells me not to be a doctor because there’s so much sitting and studying. But if I really want to be a doctor, I’m not going to let this stop me,” she resolves. ●

Somehow, she’s never let anything stop her before, and I don’t think there’s anything that can. When Esha Solanki sets out to do something, she’ll get it done or die trying, no matter how the deck is stacked. DMIX | 60
