On the fourth Friday of the month, art enthusiasts can enjoy a leisurely stroll to explore participating shops and galleries who extend their hours into the evening to highlight the artwork and creativity on display in local art galleries, shops and restaurants. Each month features a different theme. Hours 6 to 9pm on May 24, June 28, July 26, August 23, September 27, and October 25 in 2019.

May 18-19 The Annual Master Gardeners’ Garden Walk A perennial favorite! The Ste. Genevieve Master Gardeners’ annual Garden Walk is a unique opportunity to tour private and public gardens. Several gardens are part of historic homes in Ste.
Genevieve and are typical of the 18th century time period. Other activities include: plant sale, complimentary lavender cake and tea at Felix Valle State Historic Site, art show and sale with garden themed art at the Ste. Genevieve Winery. 10am to 4pm on May 18-19. Small admission fee: $7 each or $6 for groups of 5 or more, children under 12 are free. Starts at the Ste. Genevieve Welcome Center, 66 South Main Street.
June 8 • The Ste. Genevieve French Heritage Festival The French Heritage Festival is held each year throughout Ste. Genevieve’s National Historic Landmark District. This festival celebrates 300 years of French culture in North America from Quebec to New Orleans and recognizes Ste. Genevieve’s status as having the greatest concentration of authentic French Colonial architecture that exists in North America. There will be music, dance, storytelling, French cuisine and other refreshments, an evening open air dance with Creole music, wine and beer, reenactments, promenades (parades), and French Colonial architecture tours. The Felix Valle State Historic Site hosts a demonstration of French folk dancing by the Dance Discovery dance troupe. Most events and demonstrations are free, with a small fee for historic site tours. Guided Audubon bird walk on Saturday at 7am, opening ceremonies at 11am and a special performance by Dennis Stroughmatt et l’Esprit Creole at 7pm. Creole at 7pm.

The Summer Music Series brings regional and national touring acts to perform on stage at the Orris, a former movie theater in the historic district of downtown Ste. Genevieve. July 20-21 • Traditional Artisans Showcase and Sale This is a traditional art show and sale featuring artisans from the Midwest who have been selected by Early American Life Magazine as the best in their fields. These artists and fine crafters display and sell their work and happily educate the public on the traditional way “what they do” is made and was used. Hosted at ASL Pewter, 183 S. 3rd St. 9:30am - 5:00pm each day. Free admission.
August 10-11 • 53rd Annual Jour de Fete Celebration in Ste. Genevieve Easily Ste. Genevieve’s most widely recognized event, the annual Jour de Fete (Day of Celebration) has been described as “the premier arts and crafts fair in the Midwest” and a weekend you don’t want to miss. You can join in the fun and shop for treasures at the annual Jour de Fete arts and crafts festival. With over 250 arts and crafts booths, plus hands-on exhibits, festival foods and special attractions, Ste. Genevieve’s Historic District provides a perfect setting for this annual event. Saturday 10am - 6pm; Sunday 9am - 4pm.

Annie Malone Family Reunion Weekend First held in 1910, the Annie Malone May Day Parade is the country’s second-largest African-American parade. Now the celebration has expanded and will be known as the Annie Malone Family Reunion Weekend. Proceeds benefit the 130-year-old Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center, which first opened as an orphans’ home and is now an agency that helps families and children in crisis.

Union Avenue Opera Over the years, Union Avenue Opera has grown, improved and become more adventurous in its programming. For its 25th season, UAO presents
three very different scores: Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” (July 5-13), Giacomo Puccini’s “La Bohème” (July 26-Aug. 3) and Tom Cipullo’s “Glory Denied” (Aug. 16-24). Among UAO’s essential tenets is performing operas in their original languages. As the company has expanded its repertoire to include musical theater and contemporary

Citygarden Just because you’ve visited Citygarden once, don’t think there isn’t new stuff to see. The downtown oasis is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and adding three new artworks. A playful giant zipper and a cartoonish figure holding a bag of money and a balloon have already been installed. “Love vs. Money” by Kai is on the roof of the cafe building. “Unzip the Earth” by Floyd Elzinga is a temporary installation, as will be a third sculpture to be installed June 6; details on it have not yet

Laumeier Sculpture Park We’ve heard of decorated bikes and cars, but artistic golf carts? St. Louis illustrator Carlos Zamora has been commissioned to turn three carts at Laumeier into kinetic sculptures using vinyl wraps, sculptural frameworks and ornamentation. Zamora, who was born in Cuba, may use inspiration from that country’s car culture and history for “cART.” The carts debut July 26. A curious addition is a manuscript he wrote, “Catholicism and the Modern Mind,” which was donated to the museum in 1948 by actor Vincent Price. The exhibition opens July 21 and runs through Sept. 15. The duo of restaurateur Zoë Robinson and chef Ny Vongsaly rule this stretch of Wydown Boulevard in Clayton with their trio of terrific restaurants: I Fratellini, BillieJean and Bar Les Frères. And while Bar Les Frères’ patio might lack the whimsy of the restaurant’s interior, it loses none of its romance.
Though Edibles & Essentials faces busy Hampton Avenue, its back patio offers a more tranquil experience. Enjoy Matt Borchardt’s casual lunch and dinner fare — the menu changes monthly, though the french fries and fried ribs are must-order staples — as well as Saturday brunch and the special Tapas Tuesday selection.
This summer provides a new reason to visit Herbie’s ample outdoor-dining space. The Clayton restaurant has named the talented Ramon Cuffie as executive chef. Cuffie has showcased his skills in St. Louis restaurants over three decades (Bar Italia, Jaboni’s, Parigi) and promises to put his stamp on Herbie’s classic fare.

But if you concentrate on the ice cream, you’ll miss the paletas (Mexican popsicles) in flavors that are even more intriguing — cucumber, and pineapple with chile.

Beautifully carved wooden doors lead to Blue Sky Vineyard’s tasting room, which has stucco walls, hand-hewn beams, large ceiling fans that look like windmill blades and a long bar to enjoy tastings. For a dry wine, try the Rosé or Cabernet Franc. For sweet, try the Rocky Comfort White or the popular sangria. Then step outside for breathtaking views of the vineyard and the beautiful countryside.

Defiance Ridge Vineyards Heath the bachelor swan is something of a celebrity in Augusta wine country. So much so that the new-ish Defiance Ridge Vineyards named a couple of wines for him: the Heath’s Dry Vignoles and the Heath’s Off-Dry Vignoles. Both are good, but even better are the friendly bartenders and the gorgeous views there. Defiance Ridge, formerly
Wine Country Gardens, sits on a hill overlooking vineyards and beyond that the Missouri River. A patio surrounds a large, old home with a beautifully remodeled tasting room. An addition features a covered space that’s perfect for weddings. The menu is varied (try one of the shareable cheese boards or the pimento BLT), and like most wineries, there’s music on the weekends. But this is the only winery with a swan. AB

Wild Sun Winery A trip to Wild Sun Winery doesn’t need to be an allday affair, especially if you live near South County. The 4-year-old winery is only about 25 miles from Interstate 270 via Highway 21. A restored two-story home houses a small tasting area, kitchen and parlor with tables. But take your chosen beverage outside to the deck, which provides a view of a barn, pond and about 10 acres of land. The area is pleasant, if without the long vistas of some other wineries. Go Ape
Cahokia Mounds is home to the remnants of a huge Native American city, one of the largest built by the Mississippian mound-builder civilization. The city itself is long gone, but you can still walk up the famous Monk’s Mound — the tallest such earthwork in North America — and check out a re-creation of what a Cahokian’s life was like at the interpretive center.
Go Ape offers a two- to three-hour traverse through the treetops, including a full ropes course, aerial obstacles and zip lines. It’s perfect for a summer afternoon if you’re looking to get your adrenaline going, or if you really want to get over a fear of heights.

City Museum For all the explorers out there, nothing can quite compare to the City Museum. From the slides to the ball pit to the caves, it is nearly impossible to exhaust all of the possibilities in the museum in a single day. Plus, there’s a constantly rotating cast of exhibits on the upper floors, including a new funhouse exhibition opening June 7. A word to the wise: Wear sneakers, and don’t worry too much if you find yourself climbing into an abandoned airplane.

Endangered Wolf Center The Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka is home to threatened canine species from around the world. Not only does the center help protect these species, but it also offers tours where the public can meet the residents, which include a new litter of African painted dogs as well as Mexican wolves, red wolves and more. Reservations are required, so you have to do some advance planning, but it’s worth it for an up-close experience with some animals you can’t see anywhere else in St. Louis. Grant’s Farm Grant’s Farm has something for everyone. For the kids, there’s a petting zoo and animal feeding in the Tier Garten, while adults can enjoy the Bauernhof, a traditional Bavarian village that offers free samples of Anheuser-Busch beverages. Tragically, the park’s elephants died at the end of last season, but the new-look Grant’s Farm features expanded hours, water buffalo, capybaras, kangaroos and more new creatures, as well as an improved petting zoo, which includes miniature cattle and sheep. Magic House The Magic House, also known as the St. Louis Children’s Museum, is packed with activities and exhibits meant to pique children’s curiosity. What’s a summer in St. Louis without a trip to the zoo? Forest Park is home to one of America’s best zoos, and admission is free. Audubon Center at Riverlands “The Spectacle of Birds” is a 12-minute film shown at the Riverlands visitor center, but it could be the theme of the avian refuge itself. Eagles, swans, egret and herons — among other winged creatures — find their sanctuary around the waters of Ellis Bay. Besides bird watching, the bay can also be used for kayaking, paddling, canoeing and fishing. Hikers have more than 8 miles of trails to explore. Castlewood State Park The Meramec River cuts through Castlewood, making it a perfect locale for some beach time, St. Louis-style: fishing, rafting, canoeing or just enjoying the sun. (But beware of swimming there; the currents can be dangerous.) There’s plenty of shade, too, with eight tree-canopied trails amid the soaring white limestone bluffs. There are also picnic sites and playground areas to keep the little ones fed and active. Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park The largest park in St. Louis County can boast about its namesake lake, of course, as well as 15 miles of paved and unpaved trails, playground areas, and soccer and softball fields. But in a park this big, it pays to explore a little further: During your next visit, look for the saucer-shaped Greensfelder Shelter, the dripping springs at the southeast end of the lake or the 219 thighburning concrete stairs. Emmenegger has quite the past: It started as part of a “country” estate owned by the Lemp brewing family, was later used as an exotic animal breeding facility by the St. Louis Zoo and then became a swimming and tennis club. Now, it’s a mix of upland hardwoods and bottomland areas with plenty of birdwatching opportunities along the easier, paved pathway and the more arduous dirt-and-mulch trail.
After almost two years of work, Emerson Central Fields reopened in April, with four new soccer pitches, three rugby fields, a pavilion for concerts and gatherings, and a better-connected bike path. That slice of the park’s 1,300 acres is just the latest area to get a face-lift. Improved lighting is on the way at Aviation Fields and by 2022, there will be new playscapes, linked waterways and spruced-up signage.
Even if you take a pass on hiking along the Chubb or White Bison trails at Lone Elk, just a drive through the 546acre wildlife management area can often get you up close with bison, turkeys, elk and deer that like to nose their way across the road. Staff feed animals first thing in the morning, so arrive early for the best view.

Pere Marquette State Park Eight trails throughout the largest state park in Illinois will bring you up close to 230 species of birds as well as deer, beavers, river otters and turkeys. Of note is the 1.5-mile Goat Cliff Trail, which crosses underground springs and ends at an Indian burial mound. There are also bike and equestrian paths at Pere Marquette. Rockwoods Reservation “Conservation” sometimes seems like a buzzword these days, but Rockwoods has made conservation education and outdoor recreation its business since the reservation was established in 1938. Its 1,880 acres include terrain reminiscent of the Ozarks, remnants of limestone, clay and gravel quarries, and 13 miles of trails. Springs, caves and rock formations provide shelter for raccoons, possums, deer, songbirds and chipmunks. The nature reserve is getting musical this summer, and not just with the sounds of birds, insects and wildlife. The Wildflower Concert Series returns for its second year, and the Chamber Music Series at Bascom House is making its debut. Saturdays at Shaw include guided hikes and “Lunch and Learns.” Native Plant School classes are offered throughout the season.
The most popular attraction at this South County staple is the working animal farm. The stables, barns and enclosed pastures are home to horses, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and goats. On Fridays, kids 12 and younger can tour the barns, take a hayride, get their face painted, make a candle or ride a pony. Not a bad way to start the weekend!

Madison County Trails The so-called “seven loops” of the MCT trail system can be configured dozens of ways to accommodate bikers, walkers, runners and in-line skaters. The loops range from 10 to 31 miles and dip into Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Maryville, Collinsville, Pontoon Beach and Granite City. Ambitious sorts can branch off of the seven loops and head southwest through Horseshoe Lake State Park, east toward Marine Village Park or north for a dip into Macoupin County.

Chubb Trail
Grant’s Trail
The 6.7-mile point-to-point trail connects West Tyson and Lone Elk county parks, taking adventuresome trekkers up steep climbs and switchbacks, next to 20-foot rock walls and down to the Meramec River bottoms. A particularly grueling section known as “the Steps” features a climb along exposed Kimmswick Limestone. The multiuse trail is popular with mountain bikers; horses are also welcome.
Last summer, the east end of the 8-mile paved trail got a makeover and a 2,000-foot extension, thanks to the Mysun Charitable Foundation. Now after your ride or run, you can prop up your feet, enjoy the wildlife habitat and let your kids climb all over the play structure. For round-trippers, there are new restrooms, a bike fix-it station and water fill-ups to help you power through.

Hawn State Park Hawn has a trail for every type of hiker: from a short jaunt that ends at an overlook to the nearly 10-mile Whispering Pines, one of the most challenging backpacking trails in the state. Geology nerds will appreciate the exposed rock types; tree lovers can drink in the pines, oaks and flowering dogwoods; and people who enjoy funny names should spend some time on the banks of Pickle Creek.

Katy Trail On the 240-mile Katy, you can ride beneath the same river bluffs that Lewis and Clark saw as they traveled along the Missouri River more than 200 years ago. The limestone trail also meanders through farmland and gives a peek into small-town America. Many cross-country cyclists make the Katy a part of their trip through the heartland, so show off that Midwestern friendliness to your fellow travelers. Mina Sauk Falls Trail With apologies to the Carpenters, in Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, you can be at the top of Missouri, looking down on creation. The nearly 4-mile Mina Sauk Falls Trail takes hikers to the state’s highest point in the St. Francois Mountains. The path is rocky and crosses some creeks — as well as the Mina Sauk Falls — so be sure to wear supportive shoes. If you’ve only been to the Gateway Arch, you’re missing big chunks of history along our riverfront. The 12-mile Mississippi River Greenway winds through the old industrial part of downtown, past the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing, an Underground Railroad historic site. Weldon Spring Lewis and Clark Hiking Trail Within the almost 8,400-acre Weldon Spring Conservation Area are two linked loops, the Lewis Trail and the Clark Trail. Together, they total about 8 miles, traversing the banks of the Missouri River, much like their namesake intrepid explorers. Except we have GPS. And better snacks. The trails are rated as somewhat strenuous.

Powder Valley, near Interstates 270 and 44, is a convenient spot for an impromptu commune with nature. The Broken Ridge, Hickory Ridge and Tanglevine trails combine for 2.5 miles, with varying difficulty. One leg is fully accessible with interpretive signs, and all three routes take you into close contact with the conservation area’s native plants and animals.

Summertime might be most famously baseball season, but it’s also the best time of the year for horse racing. On the national scene there are the Triple Crown races, but closer to home there’s Collinsville’s own Fairmount Park Racetrack, where you can catch all the live horse races you could possibly want.
If the universal love of the Cards wasn’t enough of a clue that St. Louisans really love our baseball, maybe the fact that we have two Frontier League teams gets the message across. The Branson area is the lower Midwest’s playground. Johnson’s Shut-Ins and Elephant Rocks The shut-ins made waterslides a thing long before waterslides were a thing. The Black River’s volcanic rock formations take no prisoners, so be prepared for some bumps and bruises while scrambling over, around and through the gorge. Once you dry off, there are more than 8,600 acres to explore. St. Louisans often make it a two-for-one trip by also visiting nearby
Elephant Rocks State Park. Climb over and between giant granite boulders for a rough-and-tumble adventure. An easy way to see the rocks (without all the rough and tumble) is on the accessible Braille Trail. An extension off the trail leads back to the ruins of a railroad engine house, a remnant of the area’s quarrying and railroad history. AB
