COLLEGIATE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND BIOSCIENCE • SILINA LOKMIC

NEW BEGINNINGS

Future in medicine rooted in sacrifices of parents fleeing war-torn homeland BY JIM FAASEN STLhighschoolsports.com

Silina Lokmic’s parents sacrificed plenty to see she was given the best chance to succeed in life — before she was born. Because of those efforts, Lokmic — the first PostDispatch Scholar Athlete from the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience Magnet School — has decided at a young age to make it her life’s effort to see her parents and their homeland of Bosnia paid back in full for such sacrifices. Lokmic, who will attend St. Louis University in the fall, will do so with a specific long-range goal already in mind to give aid to the war-torn region. “I want to go to medical school and finish my dream of being a trauma surgeon,” Lokmic said. “When I establish my career, I want to go and give back to Bosnia. Even though I don’t live in Bosnia, I still feel very attached to there. After visiting a few times and seeing the conditions of their hospitals, it just really made me want to help out.” Lokmic said her mother and father, Jasminka and Himzo, have sacrificed plenty for her throughout her life, often working several jobs at a time to flourish in their adopted homeland. Silina said through it all her mother has been her role model. While Jasminka had finished school, she never got the chance to enter a career in pharmacology because of the civil war that broke out in Yugoslavia in the 1990s. “I was only 22 and in my best years, I had just finished college but I didn’t get the chance to pursue my career because of the war,” Jasminka Lokmic

Silina Lokmic (middle), the first Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete from the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, plans to pursue a career in medicine. Silina has been inspired by her mother Jasminka (left) and father Himzo, who fled their war-torn homeland and emigrated to St. Louis.

said. “We had to flee the country and try to do better. We started in Germany, then we came to America with 20 dollars. I took a job at Schnucks as a cashier, even though I didn’t speak the language. I did know I could work, so that’s what I did — often several jobs. I knew I had to do something because I became a mother. I wanted my daughter to see what you could accomplish with hard work. That is a difference in America, whether you are willing to work hard or not. I wanted to show her that hard work is very important.” Silina said her path

started out of a sense of fulfilling the promise of a career that was denied her mother, but it has grown into so much more. As it turns out, she also has a gift for her chosen field of study. “My mother’s effort to be a pharmacist being (denied) due to the war really motivated me in what I decided I wanted to do and wanted to become,” Silina Lokmic said. “I found this interest through her, but it has expanded so much since then. My mom, both my parents really, have had to work so hard and I have seen that all my life.”

Jasminka Lokmic said seeing her work ethic reflected in her daughter’s life has been its own reward. “I told her as a young child, if she becomes somebody, I win,” Jasminka Lokmic said. “That means I did my job right, that’s how it is. I’m so proud of her.” Silina Lokmic takes after her parents as she has kept an extremely busy schedule in addition to excelling at school. In addition to playing volleyball in the fall and soccer in the spring, she is the school’s Health Occupation Students of Amer-

ica (HOSA) club president, serves as a student ambassador at the school and is the vice president of the Go Green Club and the National Honor Society. Silina said her favorite sport is obvious. “Being of Bosnian heritage, soccer is in my blood, so it has always been my No. 1,” Silina Lokmic said. “My father played the game and it’s always been a favorite.” Silina is the starting goalkeeper for Medicine and Bioscience. Collegiate senior Safa Ahmed, a good friend of Silina’s, said from day one she has been impressed by

Lokmic and how she is an extremely welcoming yet driven person. “Silina was the first friend I made when I got to Collegiate,” Ahmed said. “The thing about her is that she makes everything her own. That school, it became her family and she became my family.” Lokmic jumped at the chance to go to St. Louis University. “They do have their own medical school, so that drew me there,” Lokmic said. “Being closer to home and getting the chance to stay with the community I already know and love is important.”

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS

Vikings tennis player and swimmer plans on paving the way to Mars BY JOE HARRIS special to sTLhighschoolsports.com

Most teenagers dream about shooting for the stars. Francis Howell senior Justin Sindecuse-Hayden is literally trying to get us there. Sindecuse-Hayden is planning on attending the University of Southern California for its elite astronautical engineering program. “It looks like so much fun,” Sindecuse-Hayden said. “When people say it’s not rocket science, in astronautical engineering it literally is rocket science. Space is the final frontier, and with my curiosity, space is the thing we know the least amount about.” Fewer than two dozen students graduate from the program every year. “Last year, I think 11 of them ended up working with SpaceX,” Sindecuse-Hayden said. “That sounds awesome. I know one or two either got jobs or internships with NASA. There’s also lots of different private space organizations that a lot of people don’t know exist, whether it’s building spacecrafts or doing research on something insane like sustaining life on Mars. Sindecuse-Hayden is ready for the challenge. “I feel like that’s kind of the next step that these space programs are working towards like NASA and SpaceX. That’s something so giant. We had the moon landing, so landing someone on Mars, I never even imagined it was possible when I was younger. The idea that we may have the technology in the upcoming years to get to that next step is really exciting. If I were given the chance to work on that, it would be a dream come true.” While solving the problems preventing us from landing on Mars might seem daunting to some, Sindecuse-Hayden has been problem-solving his whole life. It started when his mother, Judy Sindecuse, got him involved in Destination Imagination, a problem-solving competition. Sindecuse-Hayden has competed in Destination Imagination since he was 5 years old and has qualified for the global competition in three of the contest’s five categories — robotic, theater and improv. Sindecuse-Hayden actually took third in the world in improv and once a week he goes to the Improv Shop downtown to perform with adults. “He’s always just been very

capable of taking care of himself,” Judy Sindecuse said. “He’s always had his own ideas about things and he shares them. He has opinions about what he sees in life, he looks around, he analyzes and he likes to share his thoughts on how he thinks the world works and how people work.” Sindecuse-Hayden’s favorite class is physics, which feeds into his natural curiosity. A four-year varsity letter-winner in swimming and a two-year winner in tennis, the Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for Francis Howell uses lessons from his physics class in the pool or on the court. “Especially in backstroke,” Sindecuse-Hayden said. “Trying to keep your body straight and mostly just rotating your shoulder and hips, trying to keep the center axis of your body straight is important. Physics goes into a lot of things in pretty much every sport, just like a lot of facets of life.” With those lessons, Sindecuse-Hayden earned the AllCounty award for the 100-meter backstroke. He also swims the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

He was also all-conference in tennis. While he plays both singles and doubles, SindecuseHayden prefers doubles because of the team aspect. Howell swimming coach Anna Jovanovic called Hayden-Sindecuse a natural leader. She said he makes practices fun by challenging teammates to mini-races. “We practice from 8 to 10 at night, so those days can be long and I’m usually the only coach there so my patience level isn’t always high,” Jovanovic said. “So having that kind of leadership really helps.” Jovanovic said Hayden-Sindecuse’s influence is also felt outside of the pool. “I joked that he makes our team sound really intelligent,” Jovanovic said. “Most high school boys are talking about girls. Our team is talking about things like the value of a penny. And he’s not cocky about (his intelligence). It’s just easy for him to talk about those types of subjects.” Hayden-Sindecuse was influenced early on as a freshman in Carl Wayne’s history class. “He really brought such a fun and amazing approach to history and learning in general,”

Hayden-Sindecuse said. “That’s what initially sparked my curiosity.” Wayne said Hayden-Sindecuse always is full of energy and is the kind of person who can relate and find common ground with a wide-range of students. “With a kid like Justin, you enjoy coming to school every day because you know you’re trying to help kids who truly want to be better and who truly want to change society,” Wayne said. “Justin’s that type of kid. So whatever lesson or activity we were doing, he was going to try to get the most out of it.” Sindecuse-Hayden’s biggest influence is his mother. Judy Sindecuse earned an engineering degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and a law degree from Harvard. She is an entrepreneur. “The idea of being able to go into engineering and law and business, it’s covering so many different fields and taking an interdisciplinary approach to life,” Sindecuse-Hayden said. “She works so hard and she always pushes me to be my best.” Judy Sindecuse remembers feeling guilty when Justin was younger because she was work-

ing long hours out of a home office with Justin in the next room. “I told my mom, I feel so guilty because I’m not spending time with him,” Judy Sindecuse said. “She said, don’t feel guilty, you’re modeling for him a good work ethic. It does make me feel good when I see him working hard. Natural talent is very cool, but what’s cooler is someone who works hard for it and I see that in Justin.” That work ethic has allowed him to excel not just in the classroom or sports, but in every aspect of life. Sindecuse-Hayden also is an Eagle Scout, participates in Scholar Bowl and Missouri Youth and Government. This year, he and a friend even started a rock climbing club at Howell. There’s no doubt that his mother’s influence has given Hayden-Sindecuse the tools and drive that could someday help land a man on Mars. “I’m really excited about the opportunity he’s going to have at USC,” Judy Sindecuse said. “They’re continuing to make a lot of changes, particularly in the engineering school. There’s going to be so many opportunities for him out there.”

CARNAHAN • STEWART SMALLEY

RANDY KEMP • Special to STLhighschoolsports.com

Carnahan catcher Stewart Smalley smiles after an intentional walk during a baseball game April 19 against Gateway STEM at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Carnahan baseball coach Kevin Pulley said it was the first intentional walk issued to his team in its 12 seasons of existence. The Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for Carnahan, Smalley has a passion for baseball and is excited to begin a future in culinary arts at Sullivan University in Louisville.

GOOD COOKIN’

A future in culinary arts awaits after final baseball season with Cougars BY DAVID KVIDAHL STLhighschoolsports.com

Stewart Smalley was paid the ultimate compliment. He didn’t like it. A senior catcher for the Carnahan baseball team, Smalley stepped into the batter’s box against Gateway STEM at historic Cool Papa Bell Stadium in North City ready to swing away. He never took the bat off his shoulder. The Jaguars wanted no part of Smalley as they put up four fingers and intentionally walked him. “It was the first time ever,” Smalley said. “But when you hit a ball the way I did before, I wouldn’t pitch to me either.” The 5-foot-9 and 175-pound Smalley cranked out a monster double in his previous at-bat and Gateway didn’t want to let him do it again. By sidestepping Smalley, the Jaguars put him into Carnahan’s record book. Kevin Pulley, the only baseball coach Carnahan has known in its 12 seasons, said Smalley was issued the first intentional walk in the program’s history. “I’d never seen one of our players intentionally walked,” Pulley said. “That was the first time ever.” It’s not surprising Smalley would be on the receiving end. In an age where baseball is derided as slow, boring and having lost its grip as America’s pastime, Smalley is a throwback. Baseball is his passion and has been since he was a little kid. “That’s his sanctuary when he’s on the baseball field,” Pulley said.

FREE INJURY

“He’s having conversations with guys. He’s holding court with everyone on the field.” Smalley has gone above and beyond to help the Cougars baseball team. When he was a sophomore, the team had a pitcher that threw so hard it hurt. No one would catch him. No one except Smalley. “I was like ‘All right coach, put me back there,’ ” Smalley said. Smalley started out in center field as a freshman, moved to catcher as a sophomore and has become a regular in the Cougars’ rotation. Off the field he has actively recruited would-be teammates in the hallways at Carnahan. The Cougars have an experienced core of players who have worked to get better with Smalley’s help. He organized offseason practices and trips to the batting cage. In the midst of football season, Smalley has baseball on his brain. “I always felt baseball was for me,” Smalley said. “I’ve been doing it for a while.” Baseball brings him an immense amount of joy, but Smalley approaches everything he does with discipline. And he does plenty athletically and academically. Carnahan’s Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete, Smalley’s resume is as busy as it is impressive. Smalley is an accomplished saxophonist who has played in the school concert band and was selected to play with the North County Big Band which is sponsored in part by the Sheldon Concert Hall — but he had to give

it up because he got busy with baseball. He started on the clarinet in third grade. He loves jazz music and his favorite artist is Dexter Gordon. “Music is calming, it’s fun,” Smalley said. “It’s natural. I have real good ears.” Smalley earned four varsity letters with the football team. He played strong safety and finished his senior season with 44 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. The Cougars went 6-4 in the fall. “He’s so good at football, but he loves baseball and plays like it,” said Pulley, who’s an assistant football coach. Smalley carries a 3.5 grade point average and ranks No. 10 in his class of 91. He’s an honor roll student and received Carnahan’s Citizenship Award. Smalley is the second member of his family to be selected as a Scholar Athlete. His father, Marvin, was McK inley’s Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete in 1982. Smalley points to Marvin as his inspiration. Now a truck driver, Marvin was a carpenter before he fell 24 feet on the job and suffered a slew of broken broken bones in 2005. “I was in the hospital for week,” Marvin said. Smalley appreciates how Marvin approaches each day, especially his responsibilities as a dad. “For me my dad has shown stability,” Smalley said. “Being able to handle what he needs to handle even if it takes more than what it should. He’s shown patience with me espe-

cially over the years. My dad is a good person, he’s shown me a lot.” Smalley’s education was a priority for his mother, Sherry. A registered nurse for 37 years and currently the resource nurse in the neurosurgery unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Sherry wanted her children to find something they love and embrace it. “I always wanted them to be able to take care of themselves,” Sherry said. “Be happy and find something that is not a job, it’s a career and you’ll enjoy it.” Smalley would love nothing more than for that career to be baseball. But when you play in the Public High League there is little to no chance of crossing paths with college scouts, much less professional ones. “Playing in the Public High League is hard because you don’t get a lot of looks,” Smalley said. “If I could have chosen I’d be playing baseball in college, but I had to do what I had to do to make sure I had a future instead of depending on sports.” Instead of slinging baseballs, Smalley plans on dishing up meals. He took a culinary course his junior year of high school and discovered another passion. Smalley loves to cook. So much so that he applied and was accepted to Sullivan University’s culinary program. Smalley visited the Louisville campus and was smitten by what went on in the kitchen. “Spending the weekend down there and getting to cook with the teachers and students it really showed me I want to do this,”

Smalley said. That’s his future. For now, Smalley is trying to savor every last moment of his high school baseball career. Carnahan is 9-0 and can set a program record if it wins 10 consecutive games. The Cougars could have long passed the mark had the spring weather not been so wet and cold. They also had a game with McKinley canceled two weeks ago after gunfire was heard near the ball field at Fairgrounds Park. “Three shots rang out in the first inning,” Pulley said. “That destroyed everything.” Carnahan has ridden its talented class of seniors during their time. As sophomores they finished 11-4 for the program’s first winning season. Smalley would love nothing more than to cap his career with the best season in school history. If for no other reason than to let Pulley experience on-the-field success. “He’s an amazing person,” Smalley said. “He’s taught me so much.” A cornerstone at Carnahan and founding member of the high school athletic department, Pulley teaches multimedia and computer courses. He’s dedicated his life to the students at Carnahan. “He’s a big piece of what we do around here,” assistant principal and basketball coach Jonathan Griffin said. Count Smalley among those who feel they wouldn’t be where there are without Pulley. And vice versa. “I can’t sing his praises enough,” Pulley said. “He’s an amazing young man. He truly is.”

Most declarers in four spades were not able to find a road to 10 tricks. They won the diamond lead in hand with the king and either led a spade to the queen or a high club from their hand. The defense was able to cash a heart and play a second round of trumps, or ace and a trump, and declarer came up a trick short. When Zia Mahmood, the Pakistani expert now living in the USA, was South, he gave the opening lead a lot of

NEW YORK TIMES CROSSWORD thought. He finally decided to rise with dummy’s ace at trick one, crashing his own king, in order to lead a club from dummy at trick two. 10 tricks would have been easy had East risen with his ace, but East made the fine play of ducking. Zia won with his king and ruffed a club in dummy. A diamond ruff in hand was followed by another club ruff in dummy. Zia ruffed another diamond as East shed a heart. One more club ruff felled the ace from East. Zia ruffed yet another diamond to get back to his hand and led the king of spades. The friendly 2-2 spade split made it impossible for the defense to take more than three tricks. Well done! (05/01/18) tcaeditors@tribune.com

DEAR ABBY

WHAT’S THE DIFF? Find six differences between the panels.

Nurse knocked into emotional tailspin

Dear Nurse • Right now you are feeling vulnerable, which, under the circumstances, is normal. You should not be crying alone or iso-

lating yourself as you have been doing. You need more emotional support than the support group you belong to can give. It may help you to contact the American Cancer Society because it provides support and information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to those facing cancer. Trained specialists are available via phone or live chat and can offer you not only accurate, up-todate information, but also connect you with valuable services and resources. The phone number to call is 1-800-227-2345, and the website is cancer.org. Dear Abby • My in-laws take frequent vacations and ask my husband to dog-sit. He always says yes. They are gone seven to 10 days at a time and I don’t think we should feel obligated to always agree. My husband says that since we’re family it’s our duty. Abby, they can well afford to kennel their dogs, and I don’t think they’d be offended if we said no. But my husband thinks I’m heartless for being OK with his

parents’ dogs staying at a kennel for so long. I maintain that it’s not my problem. This disagreement comes up every two to three months. I am not willing to do this anymore. I’m not sure how to discuss this topic because, so far, nothing I have said has gotten me results. — FREE PET SITTER Dear Sitter • For your in-laws to expect you to take care of their dogs every time they decide to leave town seems excessive. However, I can understand why they would prefer not to kennel the dogs if they can leave them in a home environment instead. Because it bothers you, rather than try to dissuade your husband from being so agreeable, tell him he can dog-sit at his parents’ house, or from the moment the dogs arrive they will be his responsibility. And then stick to it. Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby at DearAbby.com or P.O. TV TUESDAY

MISS MANNERS

Keep the entrance line moving Dear Miss Manners • There is a strange phenomenon that occurs with my wife, mother-in-law and sister-in-law: When we go out for meals together, my father-in-law, brother-in-law or I will hold the door of the restaurant open to allow the ladies to enter the building ahead of us. Inevitably – and it happens no matter the combination of couples — the ladies will come to a complete stop immediately upon crossing the threshold, rather than moving to either side. This prevents us from moving around them in order to get in front of them. I am assuming they stop because they want us to lead them. Quite often it creates a backup of other patrons. How can I address this with the most important women in my life without being insulting? Gentle Reader • Ah, yes, Miss Manners has met these ladies. They are the ones who stand at

the top or bottom of the escalator after they get off. They don’t realize what they are doing until the bodies pile up behind them. But they are your relatives, and should not take it amiss if you gently take their elbows and steer them clear. Dear Miss Manners • Perhaps you could outline the proper procedures and reasons for a “Prom Champagne Party.” I agreed to help a friend, who is planning this event for her 17-year-old daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend. I can tell that my friend has definite ideas about what she wants, and it seems now that the boy’s parents (a single mother, and a remarried father) are retreating quickly. Where they once were agreeable to splitting costs of food, rentals and limos, they now seem more interested in cutting costs, or so my friend says.

Differences: 1. Bone is smaller. 2. Nose is smaller. 3. Cleaver is smaller. 4. Man has less hair. 5. Hook is moved. 6. Front of apron is different.

Dear Abby • A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I’m only 34. That’s what I keep repeating to myself — I’m only 34. I feel lost. I’m mad at God and have lost my faith. I keep wondering “Why me?” “Why my family AGAIN?” “Why stage 4?” I cry alone in an empty house because I don’t want to stress out my kids and my husband. The support groups are 30 minutes away and feature mostly breast cancer patients and survivors. I’m a nurse, and I feel out of control. All my decisions are being made when I’m unconscious or barely out of anesthesia. My world has been turned upside down. I’m not hanging on well at all. Because my control is slipping, I have lost my grasp on the person I once was. I was a strong woman. I don’t know what to do. Help! — NURSE WHO IS NOW THE PATIENT

My issue is that I don’t want to have to listen to her complain about how cheap the boy’s parents are and how the stepmother is probably influencing how much the father will pay. I thought the rules were like a wedding: The girl’s family gets to absorb the costs. I don’t want this to end in sour grapes. Gentle Reader • Grapes should not be involved. A champagne party for a 17-year-old girl is dangerous, if not also illegal. There are no rules about splitting the cost of a lavish party for a couple who are merely prom dates, because the whole idea is outlandish. But if people agree to entertain together, then both must approve the expenses. Chemo patient can skip fasting regimen FUNKY WINKERBEAN • By Tom Batiuk

Dear Dr. Roach • My daughter-in-law has stage 1 breast cancer and has just started her chemotherapy. I am concerned about her decision to fast for two days before and one day after each treatment. She weighs only 90 pounds, and fasting while you are trying to fight cancer does not sound like a good idea. — K.B.

SPEED BUMP • By Dave Coverly

Answer • In theory, fasting may make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and there have been studies in mice suggesting this approach might have value. However, during chemotherapy, the whole body needs good-quality nutrition, and I could not recommend fasting for someone who weighs so little, nor could I recommend two full days of fasting before chemotherapy. Until there is clear evidence that intermittent fasting is of benefit, I don’t recommend it.

BIZARRO • By Dan Piraro

Dr. Roach Writes • A recent column from a woman complaining of yawning after 10 minutes in her husband’s car generated a remarkable amount of mail. I had concerns of it being due to allergies. Most readers brought up one of two concerns: Could there be a carbon monoxide leak, and could her symptoms be due to a cabin air filter in need of cleaning or replacement? I am not a car expert, but I know someone who is, so I asked Ray Magliozzi from the “Car Talk” radio show and newspaper column to comment, and in his unique style, he wrote: “My wife starts yawning when I talk to her for more than 10 minutes, too. “If it’s not allergies, my greatest concern is that carbon monoxide is getting into the vehicle because of an exhaust leak. Unfortunately, that’ll put you to sleep — in the same way the family dog got put to sleep. You don’t say how old the used car is. Usually, an exhaust leak like that would be more likely in a very old car, with a lot of rust. But it’s definitely worth checking before you write it off as allergies. “You can buy a cheap CO detector for about $20. They’re often used in small planes, where exposure could be fatal. It’s probably allergies if no others are symptomatic, but an arterial blood test will tell. I had one once: It wasn’t fun. Does opening a window help? I would have my mechanic check for an exhaust leak near the manifold. Those gases can easily find their way into the passenger compartment via the cowl, where fresh air gets pulled in.” I thank Ray for his automotive advice and will note that arterial blood gas testing is the gold standard for diagnosing carbon monoxide poisoning, but this needs to be done soon after exposure. I also think changing cabin air filters is a good idea.
