bride’s face reflects wedding-day joy, so she wants it to show

unhampered by layers of intrigue. Bridal gown consultants take her goal seriously. Megan Rumsey, store manager for The Ultimate Bride, said, “Brides are just looking for that special piece to complete the look. It may not be the same detail as the dress, but it is really a reflection of their personal style. It may have beading, lace or be just plain, but it will be based on the bride’s own personality.” About half the brides who choose a dress at Mia Grace Bridal decide to wear a veil. They designate it as a specific part of the wedding, added co-owner Madison Smith. “They only wear it for the ceremony and often take it off after that,” Smith said. “They may have the hairpiece attached or be detachable so it can be left in the hair. Usually, a hairpiece goes in or remains if one isn’t attached. Floral pieces are still very popular. They are almost always fresh flowers from the florist.” Even dedicated fans of recent royal weddings usually prefer to tone down the royal look with a cathedral-length veil detailed only on the bottom or edge. Long enough to give the impression that it is a regal train, a cathedral-length veil can be bustled for wearing through the first dance, then removed for ease and comfort during the remaining reception, Rumsey noted. “Even a fingertip veil may have the same design on an edge detailing three-dimensional flowers. Beading will never go out of style in the bridal world,” she added, “but a look of crystals may just edge it ot be integrated onto the floral design.” Smith, pointing out borders often range from ¼-inch to 2 or 3 inches wide, added, “Brides are doing simpler veils to keep the dress as a main focus. Even those who do a cathedral length keep it simpler with a lace border, but not beading all over the veil. Beaded details used to look similar, but now designers are starting to match those to be more cohesive with the gown. There still may be an intricate beaded pattern or scallop, but it will be at the edge. Rumsey listed examples of gown-veil combos chosen with personality. ✤ A veil designed to showcase a woman’s hairstyle is shorter in back and longer on the sides. ✤ More layers, although unadorned, produce more volume to note “bride for the day” status. ✤ A minimalist gown – in length or design – may beckon a bride to choose a longer or cathedral-length veil for emphasis. ✤ “A lot of brides this year are trending toward a waltz-length veil, which is supposed to hit below the back of a knee, between a fingertip and cathedral look. Its design doesn’t look like an afterthought or a semi-formal item,” Rumsey said. Brides at Mia Grace Bridal, according to Smith, like the drama of a long veil to stop at the floor. One who likes gold or rose gold may select a hairpiece with that color in threading or beading. Taking a minimal look further, a veil may finish with a simple rolled edge – or leave it untrimmed. Pearls and light, clear beading may be placed intricately but be less reflective at the edge for today’s bride. Smith said color choices determine “the whole package” direction. “Blush, light gold, champagne help tie in the cohesive look because the same colors may line her gown for faint reflection,” she said. Rumsey envisioned more traditional ivory on the near-future horizon, but every bride has a preference, so a light blue veil, perfectly matched to her dress, will prevail, too. Most veils are made of tulle, which varies in structure and even color. Spanish tulle, or English netting, produces less pouf and slightly heavier draping for pictures. Another edge may be horsehair, used to define simple elegance, a technique designers use in gowns. “Even among the most uniquely dressed brides, every idea flows into another cohesive choice – and that includes the veil,” Smith said.

Her dad strung lights on floating initials behind the head table, a welcome destination. “When we finally sat at the head table,” Jim said, “we had a quiet spot to talk a little bit.” Part of the appeal was seeing – for “just a moment,” Cori said – all the guests who had come to share their wedding with them. Although Cori’s family happily filled the dance floor much of the evening, Jim broke his own family tradition to dance at the reception. They handled all of the decorative elements from the linens to the centerpieces and there wasn’t a single detail


left untouched when we arrived.” While a groom and his family are traditionally responsible for a rehearsal dinner, first cues of a well-coordinated wedding are evident as a couple’s strongest supporters from near and far are welcomed at meet-and-greets. Athena worked with her soon-to-be mother-in-law on a menu and Jane coordinated with Favazza’s to bring their vision to life. Jane recommended relying on a location’s decorative details so other items important to the overall plan can be prioritized. They used fresh flowers, white tablecloths and the unique setting of the restaurant. The bride extended the paper suite for the occasion. Athena said, “I personally designed the menus and seat assignment cards to replicate our custom wedding invitations. Our wedding colors were ivory, champagne and black, so since our wedding invitations were ivory, Jane wanted to bring in a bit of the black in the rehearsal dinner.” Jane and Athena’s tips will help kick off a spectacular wedding weekend. ✤

Observe the weather. If possible, experience the facility

in the same timeframe as the wedding. Be flexible. At the Torrettas’ most recent rehearsal dinner, the enclosed patio was opened to the pleasant Indian-summer evening. ✤

Consider the fit. The family utilized four different loca-

tions for rehearsal dinners with Favazza’s Restaurant, but still didn’t use all of the site’s facilities. ✤

Grow a guest list carefully. Close family, wedding party,

Rose of the Hill by Favazza’s showcases Italian hospitality For a classic taste of Italy in St. Louis, Favazza’s Restaurant romances brides and grooms and their guests at its elegant restaurant and full-service Rose of the Hill banquet facility, each located at the gateway to this historic section of the city. After the proposal, make wedding plans at an intimate table on the restaurant’s garden patio.
