hether you’re looking for a great place to raise a family, run a business, enjoy your retirement or simply take a well-deserved vacation, look no further – Whitefish, Montana has something for everyone!

Founded at the turn of the 20th Century when the Great Northern Railway chose to put its northwestern Montana headquarters here, modernday Whitefish is an island of commerce and culture, surrounded by an ocean of mountain recreation. Nestled at the northernmost tip of the majestic Flathead Valley, Whitefish offers residents a peaceful – yet active – lifestyle that is the envy of communities near and far. All you have to do is pick your pleasure – from hiking & biking to boating & cycling, from skiing & skating, to floatin’ & fishin’ … you’ll find all that (and more!) in Whitefish. Enjoy a world-class meal as you watch the summer sun set over Whitefish Lake. Take a leisurely stroll – or a vigorous run – on the miles of scenic trails that crisscross the region. Escape to bag some “first tracks” at the ski area before you head to the office on Monday morning. Head downtown to shop the galleries and boutiques, then catch a performance by the Alpine Theatre Project at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center. Enjoy everything that our community has to offer, and we guarantee – you’ll

be hooked on Whitefish!

A dynamic economy and unsurpassed quality of life are just two of the things that make Whitefish the perfect place to live, work and do business. The Whitefish Chamber, in coordination with the city, county and a host of state and federal agencies, offers prospective business owners personalized service as they prepare to set-up shop, as well

“... our greatest natural resource is the people who live here.”

as ongoing support to companies that are already up-and-running. And a qualified, well-educated workforce stands ready to supply all the manpower you need. Our public school systems – from elementary school on up to Flathead Valley Community College – are among the best in the state of Montana, offering students at every level a modern, comprehensive, high-quality educational experience.

When it comes to arts and culture, Whitefish has it covered! Top stars shine at both the O’Shaughnessy Center and

the Whitefish Performing Arts Center year-round, where Broadway actors, the Glacier Symphony, legendary rock n’ rollers and international dance troupes share the stage with the Bulldog Band, the high school drama club and the kids from North Valley Music School. Convenient, state-of-the-art healthcare is another of the Whitefish community’s strong suits. North Valley Hospital is one of the state’s most innovative and respected medical facilities, and dozens of specialized clinics and providers assure local residents and visitors easy access to the very best care for whatever may ail them. Just down the road, Kalispell Regional Healthcare’s main campus includes a major acute care hospital and regional medical center offering an array of health care services, along with the Pathways Treatment Center, Brendan House nursing facility, and The Summit Medical Fitness Center.

But without question, our greatest natural resource is the people who live here. You’ll find them friendly, open and welcoming, and eager to share our special corner of the universe with others. All things considered, it’s easy to see why folks have been flocking to Whitefish for more than 100 years … and we hope you’ll join us!

ong before the first white man ever laid eyes on Whitefish Lake, a handful of native American tribes inhabited the area, most notably the Kootenai, the Pend d’Orielle and the Bitteroot Salish. Archaeologists say the Kootenai have lived in the area for more than 14,000 years, inhabiting the mountainous terrain west of the Continental Divide, and traveling east of the divide for occasional buffalo hunts. The Salish people occupied territory in Washington, Idaho and western Montana, and shared hunting and gathering grounds with the Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille tribes during the 1800s. In the mid-1850s, a group of trappers working the Flathead Valley’s rivers,

6 whitefishchamber.org - (406) 862-3501

lakes and streams for beaver and other pelts came upon a group of Indians pulling a native fish species – Whitefish – from a long, narrow lake … and suddenly, after tens of thousands of years, the lake had a name! Though trappers, traders and waves of westward immigrants passed through the area during the second half of the century, it wasn’t until 1883 that the first permanent settler – John Morton – built a cabin on the shore of Whitefish Lake, just west of the mouth of the Whitefish River. Morton was joined by the forefathers of the local logging industry – including the Baker and Hutchinson brothers – in the early 1890s. Logging crews “boomed-up” their logs behind a dam built at the river mouth by

the Boston & Montana Commercial Company, which, when opened, created a rush of water that helped float the logs down the river to Kalispell. Crews laying track for the Great Northern Railway entered the Flathead Valley from what is now West Glacier in 1891, and initially followed a route through Columbia Falls and Kalispell, then west through Idaho and Washington to the Pacific Ocean. But the route west of Kalispell included a difficult climb over the Salish Mountains … a steep and tortuous grade winding slowly up one side, then just as painstakingly down the other.

It wasn’t long before the railroad’s survey team was sent back to Montana, charged with finding a new – and easier – route out of the Flathead Valley. And that’s when the two most important decisions in the small settlement’s short history were made: the decision to re-route the Great Northern Railway north to Eureka before heading west to the coast; and another to locate the railroad’s regional headquarters at the south end of Whitefish Lake. The new Whitefish Townsite was surveyed and dedicated in June of 1903.

Land was acquired, the rail yards were constructed, and a town was platted. Timber clearing and construction began in earnest, with most of the materials and supplies being hauled-in on a spur line built from Columbia Falls to the new townsite. The “cutoff” connecting Whitefish and Columbia Falls was completed in August of 1904, and the first passenger train arrived at the Whitefish Depot on October 4, 1904. In April of 1905, the Town of Whitefish was incorporated and held its first official Town Council meeting.

| History

Whitefish is still a working railroad town. More than 300 workers are directly employed by Burlington Northern/Santa Fe, and hundreds of families rely on the highly-skilled – and high-paying – jobs that BNSF creates. Amtrak passengers arrive twice daily at the historic Whitefish Depot, and dozens of freight trains pass through the BNSF railyards every day, en route from Chicago to Seattle and all points in between. And the farms and ranches that surround our town continue to produce enough beef, pork, fruits and vegetables to feed the Flathead – and then some! photo by paul snyder courtesy of the stumptown historical society

Timber, farming, ranching and the railroad were the backbone of the town’s economy – and culture – for the next 50 years. In time, summer cabins began popping-up along the shores of Whitefish Lake, and the strength of the logging industry began to wane. Modern technology (and equipment) led to a severe downsizing of the railroad’s workforce. The economy was on a downward skid, but changes were on the horizon for Whitefish. A nine-hole

golf course and clubhouse were built in the 1950s, and in the early ‘60s another nine holes were added. By the mid1990s, Whitefish Golf Course had grown to 36 holes – the largest (and best!) in the state.

Meanwhile, a few adventurous Whitefish folks had been bitten by the downhill skiing “bug” in the 1930s and ‘40s, and began hiking to the upper reaches of Hellroaring Mountain so they could ski back down an open slope into the Hellroaring Basin. In 1947, the first lift was built at what became Big Mountain Ski Area, these days known as Whitefish Mountain Resort, the cornerstone of our area’s winter tourist trade.

In recent decades, tourism has risen to the top of Whitefish’s economic food chain. The Whitefish area has gained international recognition as a recreational and retirement haven – a special place to get away from the rat race, raise a family, run a business … and make a difference!

ou know, there’s more to Whitefish, Montana than just breathtaking scenery, a great ski hill, abundant wildlife and a spectacular alpine lake. But there’s no ignoring the obvious: the #1 attraction that brings visitors to our city – the Great Outdoors – also fuels an active lifestyle for residents that is second to none. Just minutes from downtown Whitefish lies worldrenowned Glacier National Park, 1,600 square miles of the most awe-inspiring mountain peaks, waterfalls, rushing streams and glaciers to be found in North America. As the shining jewel in the “Crown of the Continent” region, Glacier attracts millions of visitors from around the globe each year – folks who come to hike its 700+ miles of trails, sleep in magnificent 100-year-old log hotels, explore the crags and canyons that

abound … and maybe catch a glimpse of a bighorn sheep, a herd of elk or a grizzly bear!

or horseback, in a raft, on a bike or in a tent.

If Glacier is the crown, there are certainly plenty of other “natural jewels” to choose from in the Whitefish area, beginning with Whitefish Lake! The southern shore of the lake, and the everpopular Whitefish City Beach, is just blocks from the heart of downtown Whitefish. Fed by the waters of Swift Creek, Lazy Creek and Hellroaring Creek, the lake is popular with users of all sorts: swimmers, k a y a k e r s , fishermen, waterjet-skiers, photo by Steven Gnam courtesy of whitefish legacy partners and paddle-boarders, park” for the next nine months … a place ice fishermen, and every imaginable we can go to recharge the batteries type of motorized – and self-propelled whenever we feel the need; a place to – boat known to mankind. explore at our own pace and in our own way, whether it be on snowshoes, skis Whitefish Lake is 7 miles long, 2.5 miles But when the hordes of visitors go home in September, Glacier becomes “our

wide and 222 feet deep at its deepest point. In addition to Whitefish City Beach – with it’s family-friendly (and roped-off) beach, manned lifeguard towers and picnic gazebos – the public can also access the lake at either Whitefish Lake State Park on the Lake’s west shore, or Les Mason State Park on the eastern shoreline of the Lake.

In the summertime it’s all about being outside, and there’s no better way to see nature than to hike (or bike) on one of the area’s many trail systems. The Whitefish Trail currently offers more than 36 miles of natural surface trail, (with more being added each year), accessed by ten trail heads. These trails are located in forested, rural environments popular for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and walking and are appropriate for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and bikers and runners of all abilities. If a casual stroll is more to your liking, try the paved Whitefish Bike & Pedestrian Trail System, which meanders around town and along the Whitefish River. For a more heart pumping workout,

head up to Whitefish Mountain Resort and hike the Danny On Trail to the summit of Big Mountain, where you’ll find breathtaking views of the Flathead Valley, eye-popping fields of colorful

wildflowers, and some of the best huckleberry picking around. Those looking for a more relaxing experience can catch a scenic chairlift ride to the top of Big Mountain … but there’s plenty

more for the more adventuresome to experience at the resort as well.

The Zip-Line Tour at Whitefish Mountain Resort is one of the most popular summertime activities on the hill, often requiring reservations days in advance. But the Walk in the Treetops, Alpine Slide and Aerial Adventure Park are just as popular with visitors and locals alike. Countless adventures await those who prefer “pedal power” to hoofing it. So whether your cycling sights are set on screaming down a single track mountain trail, pushing the pedals on a long road ride, taking the family out for an afternoon of easy trail riding, or pedaling to City Beach for some R&R on a beautiful sunny day … Whitefish offers it all! Mountain biking opportunities range from resort riding at Whitefish Mountain Resort to trail rides just outside of town at Spencer Mountain, the Whitefish Trail, Round Meadows and Tally Lake. There are trails to accommodate everyone from kids on training wheels to the most veteran offroad riders … and road cyclists have a myriad of options in the area as well.

Whitefish has been named a “Top50 Golf Destination” by Golf Digest Magazine, and it’s no wonder! Nine championship golf courses are within a forty-five minute drive of Whitefish, and the outstanding quality and affordability of the Valley’s golf courses are well known throughout the US and Canada. Add to that our 16 hours of summertime daylight and temperatures that average in the mid-70’s, and anytime is a good time to play a round in Whitefish.

Whitefish Lake Golf Club offers Montana’s only 36-hole golf complex; its tree-lined fairways, well-bunkered (and spacious) bent grass greens and spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery make for an excellent golfing experience for players of all ages and skill levels.

Flathead River, where any of a halfdozen professional rafting companies will be happy to get you chest-deep in whitewater! The Class II-IV rapids on the Flathead – with names like “Bonecrusher” and “Jaws” – are more than enough to satisfy the whitewater purist, but there is also a menu of “gentler” options designed with families in mind.

If you’re looking to get a true “Old West” experience, maybe it’s time to saddle-up and hit the trail! The Whitefish area has several different stables and ranches that offer everything from 1-hour horseback rides to multi-day overnight trips into Glacier National Park and the Great Bear Wilderness.

Summer and fall are “prime time” for sportsmen in the Flathead Valley, as fishing and floating picks up on both the Middle and North Forks of the Flathead River and a hundred other, smaller, rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. Anglers flock to our area in search of west slope cutthroat trout, rainbows and whitefish, but they’ll occasionally pull in some hefty bull trout, a kokanee salmon or northern pike. Fall is deer and elk season in northwestern

Montana, and those serious about filling their tags will find the hunting here to be both challenging and rewarding.

When winter sets-in here in Whitefish, we don’t go into hibernation … we catch our second wind! Winter sports abound here in the shadow of Whitefish Mountain Resort, where more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 105 marked trails and 14 lifts constantly beckon to powder hounds and beginners alike. The lift lines are short, the people friendly, the snow plentiful, and – best of all – lift ticket prices are among the most affordable of any major US ski resort.

Off the hill, things are just as busy. Whitefish is a wintertime mecca for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, ski-joring, sleigh riding, ice skating … and cross-country skiing. A wide array of groomed nordic skiing trails are available throughout the Whitefish area. Tours in Glacier National Park take you through breathtaking scenery, and the Whitefish Lake Golf Club magically transforms into the Glacier Nordic Center in winter – a 15-kilometer Nordic touring center that is tracked and groomed for skating and classic skiing, with five kilometers of lighted trails for night skiing.

Another magnet of wintertime activity is the Stumptown Ice Den, an Olympicstyle rink in the heart of Whitefish that is popular with figure skaters, hockey players, curling enthusiasts and recreational skaters throughout northwestern Montana. The “Den” is open year ‘round, and hosts skating lessons and performances, hockey leagues, tournaments, and daily open skating for the public.

Northwest Montana offers some of the most incredible snowmobiling terrain to be found anywhere, and a trio of local businesses have the equipment – and know-how – to make sure your day on the trails is safe and enjoyable. And if you’re looking for a mode of transportation with a little more “horse” and a lot less power, consider a trip to the Bar W Guest Ranch or the Cripple Creek Horse Ranch for a horse-drawn sleigh ride and dinner. magine what it would be like to live in a place that most people feel lucky to visit once in a lifetime. The fact of the matter is … that’s what it’s like to live in Whitefish! We don’t have to take a vacation to visit Glacier National Park, to grab some “first tracks” at one of America’s top ski resorts, to catch a Broadway play, or to experience the excitement of a small-town rodeo. All that and more is part of our day-to-day life in Whitefish.

It’s been said that our community is an island of culture, surrounded by an ocean of mountain recreation. And whether you’re looking for that perfect piece of mountain-inspired art, you want to be “wowed” by a Broadwaycaliber show, or you’re ready to enjoy some Rocky Mountain bluegrass … you’re bound to find what you’re looking for in Whitefish!

Whitefish is home to both the Alpine Theatre Project and the Whitefish Theatre Company, a pair of dynamic arts organizations who host and produce a variety of world class offerings year-

round on two state-of-the-art downtown stages – at The O’Shaughnessy Center and the Whitefish Performing Arts Center. Whether its Black Curtain

Theatre at the WTC or a Broadway musical at the ATP, you’ll find something to your liking onstage in Whitefish.

The streets of downtown Whitefish are peppered with galleries, retail shops and exhibits for the art lover. Many of our restaurants feature exhibits by local artists, and while Big Sky scenery

and wildlife is a popular subject of local artists, there’s definitely something for everyone in Whitefish – from pottery to metalwork, from western to modern. Whitefish Gallery Nights takes place on the first Thursday of each month from May to October, with participating galleries & shops featuring the works of guest artists … and offering free food and drink to arts aficionados.

The non-profit Stumptown Art Studio, located in the heart of downtown Whitefish on Central Avenue, is also the “heart” of the local arts scene. The studio offers art classes, camps and workshops for people of all ages; they help organize the monthly “Gallery Nights” events; they provide gallery space for local artists; and they provide art & outreach programs to Whitefish schools and “special needs” organizations serving our area’s veterans, senior citizens and troubled youth. Best of all … you can walk-in anytime to fuse glass, create pottery or create a Montana-made mosaic!

The Flathead Valley is home to a number of wonderful museums, including the Stumptown Historical Society Museum in the historic Whitefish Train Depot. Just 10 miles south of town, the city of Kalispell is host to the renowned Hockaday Art Museum, the historic Conrad Mansion and numerous fine art galleries.

| Arts & Entertainment

The Glacier Symphony Orchestra performs classical, holiday, and pops concerts each season, accompanied by world-class (and emerging) guest artists. The Glacier Chorale is a 75-voice symphonic choir, and together the two have brought the world’s greatest music to the Flathead since 1981 – including the acclaimed Festival Amadeus, which kicks-off in early August.

Live music abounds in Whitefish. From the “open mic” nights at our watering holes to the best “world music” at the O’Shaughnessy Center to the top-notch rock, country, jazz and jam-bands that help keep the blood flowing in January … there’s never a shortage of talented live entertainment in Whitefish!

T

ake a world-class ski hill, spectacular mountain scenery, a thriving “Old West” downtown core and a bit of worldly culture … mix them all together and what do you get? Whitefish, Montana! Dollar-for-dollar and pound-forpound, Whitefish has the best dining and nightlife of any mountain town in the West. With more than 50 different restaurants, bars and clubs serving cuisine from around the globe, you’re sure to find something to your liking in Whitefish. Let your appetite be your tour guide as you experience the full bounty of the Whitefish restaurant scene, beginning with breakfast! Whitefish is home to a dozen different outstanding a.m. eateries, onetime “secret spots” that are secret no more! Everyone has their favorite … just ask any local, and they’ll point you in the right direction.

For lunch and dinner, the options in Whitefish are endless … from casual pizza joints and Texas-style barbeque to upscale continental cuisine; from top notch seafood and Montana-raised beef to authentic Italian, Cajun and Mexican classics; from the Big Sky’s best bar food to elegant dining overlooking beautiful Whitefish Lake, the mountains or the golf course. Advance

reservations

are

strongly

advised for many Whitefish restaurants, especially during the summer months and on ski season weekends and holidays.

Once the dinner hour is done, the bars and nightclubs of downtown Whitefish take on a life all their own. Live bands and DJs keep the dance floors packed at a half-dozen downtown watering holes – including several with outdoor, rooftop and patio bars. Several different downtown clubs offer live music, DJs, stand-up comedy and/or dancing 3-4 nights a week throughout the year, including Casey’s, the Great Northern Bar & Grill and the Craggy Range. The Boat Club, Piggyback BBQ and the Great Northern Brewing Company also host live music on occasion.

One of the fastest-growing trends in Whitefish – and throughout Montana – is the move toward “craft” brewing and micro-distilling. The Great Northern Brewing Company has been a fixture in downtown Whitefish for decades, and in recent years has become a “production” craft brewery as well, distributing its popular “Wheatfish,” “Good Medicine” and other lines throughout Montana and beyond. Newer to the Whitefish scene is the Bonsai Brewing Project, which opened a public tasting house and beer garden

on Wisconsin Avenue in 2015 to rave reviews and huge summertime crowds. Newer still is the town’s first microdistillery, Spotted Bear Spirits, located a half-block off Central Avenue in the downtown district. The first-year distillery (and tasting room) opened in late 2015, producing a line of “uniquely Whitefish” vodkas and other spirits.

Whitefish hosts a number of popular food (and drink) events each year, including “Feast Whitefish” – a multiday festival that spans 10 days (and two weekends) in mid-May. The Feast begins with an opening night “Distiller’s Fest” featuring a dozen different Montana distillers and a half dozen local restaurant serving up gourmet hors ‘douevres and appetizers, and continues with a series of unique wineand beer- maker dinners, collaborative (and competitive!) cheffing events, and more. In addition, a pair of brewfests – as well as the Whitefish Winter Winefest – are held each year to benefit the Shuttle Network of Whitefish, which operates the free SNOW Bus shuttle service between downtown and the ski area all winter. For more information, see the Restaurant Guide on Pages 20-21, or visit the Chamber of Commerce website at www.whitefishchamber.org.

Art, entertainment and of course huckleberries take center stage at the annual huckleberry days arts festival August 11-13, 2017

I

t’s been said that no one throws a party like Whitefish, and for good reason. The natural beauty of the area, its colorful history and cultural amenities make it the perfect place to hold special events, fairs and festivals that are uniquely Whitefish.

Most every weekend throughout the summer – and frequently throughout the year – you can find an art show, a music festival, an athletic competition or street fair in Whitefish. Through the years, several of Whitefish’s “signature” events have grown to nearlegendary proportions, most notably the “granddaddy of ‘em all,” Winter Carnival.

Held the first weekend in February for the last five decades, Whitefish Winter Carnival has been named one of the Top 10 Winter Carnivals in the World by National Geographic Traveler magazine. Carnival weekend is the culmination of a month of tongue-in-cheek pageantry and Whitefish-style frivolity, all culminating in a full weekend of events including the raucous Grand Parade and the “Penguin Plunge” into Whitefish Lake on Saturday afternoon.

Winter Winefest is a fundraiser for the Shuttle Network of Whitefish, otherwise known as the SNOW Bus. This upscale evening of wine, food and a charity auction raises money to support the wintertime bus system that connects the town of Whitefish and the base of

the ski area.

One of the Northern Rockies’ top food and drink festivals returns in May … Feast Whitefish! Spanning 10 days (and two weekends), the Feast begins with an opening night “Distiller’s Fest” featuring a dozen different Montana distillers and a half dozen local restaurant serving up gourmet hors ‘douevres and appetizers, and continues with a series of unique wineand beer- maker dinners, collaborative (and competitive!) cheffing events, and more.

The summer event season in Whitefish kicks-off in mid-June with the 5th Annual Whitefish Woody Weekend, a three-day celebration of classic American wooden boats hosted by The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Dozens of vintage hardwood cruisers will be on display at the Lodge Marina; a boat parade around Whitefish Lake is planned for Saturday evening, and the craft (and their captains) can be seen buzzing across the lake at full tilt on Sunday, during the Woody Weekend Poker Run.

full days of small-town events, and one big-time arts & crafts show! More than 125 local and regional vendors strut their stuff in Depot Park for three days in mid-August, it also features a climbing wall for the kids and the Chamber’s Huckleberry Dessert Bake-Off!

Another fundraiser for our wintertime bus system, the SNOW Bus Summer Brewfest is held downtown in Depot Park. Beautiful late August weather, 40 different ice-cold, Montana-made beers on tap, and a little bit of live music … what’s not to like?

The only public fireworks display between Flathead Lake and the Canadian border goes off at dusk over Whitefish Lake on the Fourth of July, which in northwestern Montana means 10:30 p.m. or so! Crowds gather at Whitefish City Beach, – and on the water – to watch the show ... so grab a spot early! Held the first weekend in July in Whitefish Depot Park, the three-day Whitefish Arts Festival features the work of more than 100 regional artists and craftsmen, as well as a variety of food vendors and entertainment.

Festival Amadeus – Montana’s only week long classical music festival returns to Whitefish in August for its eighth season. Glacier Symphony & Chorale Music Director John Zoltek leads the Festival Amadeus Orchestra

with special guest artists in a series of performances at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center. One of the highlights of summer in the Whitefish area is picking wild huckleberries … and another is the Huckleberry Days Arts Festival: three

For two weekends in late September and early October, Whitefish is transformed to “Munich in the Mountains,” hosting the largest – and most authentic – Oktoberfest in the Pacific Northwest. Authentic Bavarian food, beer, music, dancing and more, all under the Oktoberfest Bigtop in Depot Park. We all know that Whitefish’s downtown clubs go all-out every night … but on Halloween, watch out! Central Avenue turns into Ghoul Central early on

real estate

M

ontana is one of the most desired places in the country to live, work, raise a family and retire. And Whitefish is one of the top real estate markets in Montana … for good reason.

From spectacular waterfront properties

on Whitefish Lake to slope-side lodges and condos at Whitefish Mountain Resort; from sprawling Montana ranches to quaint older homes in the historic downtown district; from mountaintop retreats to cabins in the woods … the Whitefish real estate

market has something to fit your taste and lifestyle.

In 2016 the residential real estate market continued to gain strength in Whitefish, posting it’s best numbers in years. A number of new single-family home, condominium and apartment developments began to take shape last year, and that trend is expected to continue in 2017. New building permits are also on the rise in Whitefish, as approved projects that “stalled” during the recession years are beginning to find new life, and newlyapproved residential developments prepare to break ground this spring.

Northwest Montana is also emerging as one of the most popular places for active retirees. In fact, in 2016 the Flathead Valley was recognized by Where To Retire magazine as an “ideal” location for retirement thanks to its natural mountain/lake settings, outdoor recreational opportunities, excellent medical services, commercial air service and vast cultural opportunities.

education

O

ne reason that growing families choose to live in the Whitefish area is the quality educational experience that our local schools offer, from preschool all the way through college.

Perennially ranked among the top school districts in all of Montana, the Whitefish School District serves more than 1,676 students enrolled at four centrally located facilities: Muldown Elementary School (K-4), Whitefish Middle School (5-8), Whitefish High School (9-12), and Whitefish Independent High School, which provides a non-traditional setting for grades 10-12. Whitefish Christian Academy educates children in Pre-K through the 10th grade. A classical Christian school, WCA achieves academic excellence in a fun, safe environment. Whitefish Community School, established in 2004, is a non-profit pre-school and daycare facility meeting the early educational needs of the community. Whitefish students are expected to complete a rigorous academic program from kindergarten through grade 12. Major emphasis at the elementary level

focuses on strong reading, language and math skills; the middle and high school programs add to that strong foundation a variety of fine arts programs, along with advanced placement classes in English, Government, Science and Math.

The district’s Virtual High School (VHS) program is open to students beginning in the 8th grade, offering more than 300 courses to those interested in challenging themselves them with a diverse curriculum taught online by nationally known instructors.

High school students also have the option of attending Flathead Valley Community College while still at WHS through the Running Start program. Running Start gives eligible high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get a start on their college career by earning dual credit simultaneously at WHS and FVCC. One advantage of small town life is that parents have plenty of opportunities to help improve the quality of their kids’ education, and that’s particularly true in Whitefish. The Bulldog Boosters and Parent Teacher Association are two of

the strongest service organizations in town, and play an active and important role in assuring that Whitefish kids get the best possible education.

The residents of Whitefish stand strong behind their schools, recently approving a $20 million school bond to fund construction of the new Whitefish High School. Our local schools and students are also supported by the Whitefish School District Education Foundation, a community based nonprofit organization established to maintain and enhance the educational opportunities, programs and standards of the Whitefish School District.

Established in 1967, Flathead Valley Community College is Montana’s largest two-year public college. The main campus in Kalispell is just a 15-minute drive south of Whitefish, and offers top-quality academic programs taught by some of the nation’s brightest faculty. FVCC’s state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technologies provide students with an outstanding foundation for their first two years of college, preparing them for a successful and seamless transfer to colleges and universities in Montana and beyond. FVCC offers Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates in more than 50 career and technical fields, preparing students to launch rewarding careers immediately following graduation. And the college works closely with local workforce and economic development agencies to offer training programs to meet the specific needs of 21st century employers … from construction skills to healthcare, and computer software to firefighter training.

hitefish residents and visitors enjoy a wide variety of top-quality options when it comes to caring for the health of themselves, their families and employees.

The Flathead Valley boasts two modern medical campuses, both of which provide excellent patient care, utilize state-of-the-art medical technology, and do it all in a comfortable setting … with outstanding food! And with 2.5 physicians for every 1,000 residents, Flathead County is ranked 3rd in the state for its physician-to-patient ratio.

North Valley Hospital is a 25bed hospital on 40 verdant acres, conveniently located near the junction of Highways 93 and 40 in Whitefish. North Valley Hospital offers a wide range of hospital based and out-patient services, including a 24/7 Emergency Department, laboratory and imaging services, minimally invasive surgeries (including robotic and orthopedic procedures), infusion services, and an intimate birth center. The beautifully designed hospital and its outreach clinics are known for their Planetree Patient-Centered Care – an approach that strives to demystify,

humanize and personalize the healthcare experience for patients in a healing environment. The hospital’s Emergency Department is certified as a Pediatric Prepared Facility, and the Imaging Department is equipped with 64-slice low-dose CT, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, DEXA and digital mammography.

More than 150 physicians and 80 allied health professionals are on staff at the hospital and its outreach clinics. In addition to the hospital/medical office complex in town, North Valley operates a pair of seasonal urgent care clinics to serve residents and visitors alike – the

care excellence in the Flathead Valley for more than 100 years. KRMC is both a community hospital and a regional referral center, offering the area’s most advanced health services and medical technology.

A comprehensive inventory of sophisticated diagnostics and treatment techniques is matched by equally specialized, highly-skilled professionals whose experience is respected throughout the area and the nation. But beyond medicine and technology, caregivers at KRMC touch the lives of patients and their families while patients are hospitalized, as well as after they go home.

KRMC is the flagship hospital of Kalispell Regional Healthcare, the most comprehensive collection of health care services in Northwest Montana and the largest private employer in Flathead County. In addition to KRMC, other members of the Kalispell Regional Healthcare family include Brendan House, The Summit Medical Fitness Center, The HealthCenter, and many other medical services and physician offices. stable, well educated workforce, an outstanding location, cuttingedge internet connectivity and an unsurpassed quality of life combine to make Whitefish the ideal spot for business success – both now and in the future! Add to that a new wave of major private and public investment – and a number of Chamber initiatives designed to strengthen and grow the local economy, and we think you’ll agree ... Whitefish, Montana is where your business ought to be!

Commercial development – and planned development – in Whitefish is as active as it’s been in more than a decade, and is approaching levels only seen in the pre-recession “boom” days. Two new hotels were completed in 2016, the 86room three-story Firebrand Hotel in the downtown core, and a Hampton Inn on the Highway 93 strip. More have either been approved or are in the planning stages, including an 80-room Marriott suites hotel on Hwy. 93 South. Three new restaurants, a bakery and a halfdozen new retail stores opened in 2015 (or will this spring) in the downtown area, where construction on the new $16 million City Hall/parking structure complex is nearing completion.

In addition to the new hotels on Hwy. 93 South, a 60-unit apartment complex is nearing completion adjacent to the Hampton Inn, and a mixed-use residential development is planned for

land adjacent to the new Marriott. Plans to re-zone and develop a stretch of the Hwy. 93 corridor south of Whitefish have recently been unveiled by a group of local land owners, and properties that have been vacant and sitting on the market for years have sold, with development plans forthcoming.

Hurraw! Lip Balm moved into its new $1 million manufacturing facility in the Baker Commons area in 2015, and the Glacier Restaurant Group completed work on its new corporate headquarters in the Commons as well. Shopko, the Dollar Store and a handful of other new tenants moved into the newly renovated (and rejuvenated) Mountain Mall. Development – and re-development – is also taking place in the 93 West and Wisconsin Avenue corridors, and both of those areas are poised for more of the same in coming years

There’s no doubt about it ... it’s an exciting time for Whitefish! And the Chamber is focused on three separatebut-equal strategies for enhancing the Whitefish economy: •Helping existing businesses get the help they need to survive, grow and thrive; •Attracting new companies to Whitefish that will complement the existing business community; and •Identifying and implementing programs, projects and events that enhance the Whitefish visitor experience, and help to grow tourism in

the shoulder and winter seasons.

In addition, the Chamber promotes our community on a local, regional, statewide and global basis, in an effort to: •Attract new business and investment to Whitefish; •Create new, high-paying jobs through business relocation, new business start-ups and the expansion of existing companies; •Promote the Whitefish area’s assets to prospective employers, investors and residents; and •Improve our community by encouraging planned economic development, strong civic leadership, better education and increased cultural and recreational opportunities.

At its annual Retreat & Planning Conference, the Chamber Board restated its commitment to working collaboratively with a host of different groups and agencies who share common interests and constituents, including: the Whitefish City Council, Montana West Economic Development, Whitefish Convention & Visitors Bureau, Flathead County Economic Development Authority, Big Mountain Commercial Association, Whitefish Winter Carnival, Glacier Park International Airport, six other Chambers of Commerce and the Flathead County Commission ... just to name a few. Chamber of Commerce | whitefish Community guide little business … you get the idea. • Topical business seminars – The Chamber’s “Lunch-n-Learn” series brings in local experts to talk about issues of interest to local business owners in a comfortable format. Topics range from tax code changes and HR compliance to Facebook marketing and “Networking 101” … and everything in between. • Membership Luncheons & Awards Banquet – Informational luncheons are held throughout the year on topics of interest to the business community, and the Chamber hosts the town’s annual community awards ceremony each winter, recognizing the outstanding contributions made to Whitefish by local individuals and business owners. Getting involved … The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce is about one thing – your business. And that’s why your active participation in the Chamber is so crucial. We’re committed to focusing on your needs, but we rely on our members’ input and leadership in the process to assure that we’re serving you – and our community – as best we can. The Chamber’s annual work program is planned and executed with the assistance of dedicated board, Trustee, committee and task force members, all of whom put their unique perspective, experience and enthusiasm into projects that benefit our member businesses and the community at large. Committee membership is open to any active Chamber member who is ready, willing and able to make a difference.

Board of Directors – Elected by the Chamber membership, this 12-member group meets monthly to oversee Chamber operations and establish policy. The Board is responsible for developing, approving and implementing the organization’s annual Program of Work and Budget.

Government Affairs Committee – The GAC is an advisory committee to the Board of Directors. Its primary responsibilities are to monitor governmental matters that could impact the community or local businesses,

to present recommendations to the Chamber Board for approval, and to initiate appropriate action.

In 2016, Chamber Board, GAC and/or staff members attended all 22 regular City Council meetings and countless workshops, hearings and public meetings, weighing-in on select issues of importance to the business community. The GAC’s priorities for 2016 included participating in city-initiated “corridor studies” for the Wisconsin Avenue and Highway 93 South business districts; continuing to monitor the progress of the new City Hall/parking structure project; and encouraging the wise investment of TIF funds in economic development projects throughout the city.

Workforce Housing Task Force – This group leads the effort to address our community’s critical shortage of affordable workforce housing. In partnership with the Whitefish City Council, the Task Force last year conducted a comprehensive Workforce Housing Needs Assessment, and in 2017 will spearhead development of a Strategic Housing Plan for the community. Member Services Committee – The MSC advises the Board of Directors on programs, projects and activities that directly affect (and benefit) the Chamber’s member businesses. The Committee meets regularly to assist in the planning of our monthly Gone Fishin’ networking events, the quarterly

Economic Development Task Forces – The Chamber’s economic development efforts are spearheaded by the Chamber’s Trustee Council, but input from all Chamber members is needed to help identify and address issues and/or problems of major significance. A Chamber Task Force on improving commercial air service to our region

AERO’s efforts led United Airline to add weekly wintertime non-stop service from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Glacier Park International Airport two years ago, and to the addition of wintertime nonstop service to San Francisco this year.

Chamber Trustees invest time & resources in the future of the Whitefish economy

The Whitefish Chamber’s Trustee Program brings together the area’s top business and civic leaders in an effort to develop a shared vision for the future of Whitefish, and to prepare our community for the unique challenges of the 21st Century. The Trustees spearhead the Chamber’s governmental affairs and economic development efforts, identifying and tackling the “big picture” issues that affect today’s business environment. They focus their concern, expertise and resources on addressing issues which confront our community, region and state, to ensure a solid future for free enterprise and our citizens. Their commitment to Whitefish – and to the Chamber – is the foundation for our continued prosperity. Chamber Trustees work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the Chamber’s economic development strategy, identifying programs, projects and initiatives that will improve – and diversify – our town’s economy. The Chamber’s Trustees have been the driving force behind a number of major economic development efforts, including the formation of

Glacier AERO, a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding commercial air service to the Flathead Valley. After a successful initial fundraising campsign, AERO has – for the last two years – contracted with United Airlines to add direct wintertime service between Glacier Park International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The organization this year added new nonstop service to San Francisco, and will continue to work closely with airport and airline officials to capitalize on opportunities to expand and enhance air service to our area.

Expanded commercial air service, addressing the critical workforce housing shortage, redevelopment of the old North Valley Hospital and Idaho Timber sites, identifying new strategies to boost shoulder and winter season visitation, and support for new and existing businesses will continue to be top priorities for the Chamber – and its Trustees – in 2017.
