blog
by M. Joloya
Every art director should have a blog. 12:04 is an inspirational style blog by Olga Montserrat who describes her own mode as "nonchalant-French." The name reflects the time of her birthday as well as a time that occurs twice a day. We love it for Olga's personal take on minimalist eye-candy.

High Maintenance is a binge worthy web series available on Vimeo.com. Created, written and directed by married couple, Ben Sinclair + Katja Blichfeld, it explores a day in the sometimes adventurous routine of a Manhattan marijuana delivery guy who at all times remains nameless. Look for our fashion favorite, Rachel Comey the designer herself in one of the episodes, our favorite gallery girl from GIRLS (in the photo above) and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens (in drag).

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School have graduated from up-and-coming within the CFDA Incubator Program (2010-2012) to CFDA's Menswear Designer of the Year for 2014. The recent successes of the designing duo are a product of extra credit hard work, sweat and years of experience from their humble beginnings at Sean John. Public School was founded in 2008; the name is an ode to being native New Yorkers, which plays as their main inspiration for the collection. Chow and Osborne are a prime example of how hard work never ends. And loyalty is never lost. Both of the designers express the imperative need to design and manufacture their line in New York City. They work with local tailors and pattern makers in their hometown's Garment District.
“Find perfection in imperfection. The mantra that sticks throughout their entire design and development is "find perfection in imperfection", which epitomizes the brand's identity of being made 100% in New York City. Caroline de Maigret is one of those women we wish we could be like. As a French fashion model, she worked for many years with Christian Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton as well as other venerable fashion houses. She comes from a well-bred political Parisian family, has a Bachelors in Economics under her belt, and an education in Modern Literature from the Sorbonne. And if fashion, literature, and economics weren’t enough, Caroline added music to her list of interests
in 2006, when she created a record label with her longtime lover, Yarol Poupaud (real name Stanislas Poupaud) called Bonus Track Records. Together they also created a publish company called Yarock Editions in order to keep promoting the rock scene. Her stint into the music world took her away from the fashion scene for a few years, but in 2011 she returned to the catwalk as Chanel's muse and also made stylish appearances in Garan Doré’s blog and The Coveteur.

SHE’S A TOMBOY. by Chloé Fontaine
tom·boy
/’täm,boi/ noun a girl who enjoys rough, noisy activities tradtionally associated with boys.
Since Tomboy has appeared in the Oxford dictionary in 1592, its meaning has radically evolved. In past decades, the terminology of the word became automatically relative to lesbians, which was synonym for disability or mental illness. In France, it was even forbidden until January the 31st, 2013 for women to wear pants. More recently, Lizzie Garett Mettler wrote a book about it, Tomboy style and writes a blog, Tomboy Style [http://tomboystyle.blogspot.com/]. She focuses on local brands and shows us different aspects of Tomboy trend, from the surfer girl to the red carpet movie star. Tomboy has nothing to do today with what it used to be. Borrowed from the boys style has never been more prevalent. In the past fashion seasons, we saw an incredible amount of boyfriend inspired outfits on the runway. These days, it is nearly impossible to be in a place where there is not at least half of the feminine population in our radius wearing a knit beanie hat. The neet to balance a baggy pant with stiletto to stay “girly” has become outmoded. Today, a majority of girls are influenced to want to feel good by expressing their identity through their clothes. With the encouragement of today’s street-style fads, acquiring a tomboy style is not for appearance only, it is a whole way of thinking and living. Tina Leung at Paris Fashion Week, Fall 2014
TWO BRANDS FROM BOTH WEST AND EAST COASTS are breathing new life into the tomboy lifestyle—
WILDFANG and TOMBOY BKLYN

Founders Emma and Julia
DNA: Can you tell us what were you doing before WILDFANG? WF (Co-founder, Emma McIlroy): I was working in Brand Marketing at Nike. I’m a brand marketing nerd and I’m sports obsessed so it was my dream job. It took a lot for me to leave. Willdfang became an idea I just couldn’t stop thinking about. DNA: How did you meet each other? WF: We met while working at Nike. Honestly I think (my co-founder) Julia Parsley was the only one who could understand me (given my thick Irish accent) so she became my translator and best friend. DNA: How did Wildfang begin? WF: I remember the first time we had the idea. Actually Julia has to get the credit for the idea. We were in the men’s department at a well-known store and I was looking at a men’s graphic tee, which had a barely clad Kate Moss on the front. Jules was staring at a men’s 18
blazer with patches on the elbows. She came over and just said “Ems, why don’t they make this shit for us?” And I didn’t really have an answer. We thought about it a lot, did a ton of consumer research and fast forward two and a half years later - here we are. DNA: Can you give us your own definition of a tomboy? WF: Tomboy is just as much about spirit as it is about style. Tomboy is an attitude and a way of life. Wildfang thinks about a tomboy as a woman who is confident, independent, driven to be her best, but still knows how to have fun. She is the chick who is paving her own way, and also the chick you want to go for a beer with.

DNA: Can you tell us what were you doing before Tomboy BKLYN? TB: We are designers. Ashta is an apparel designer and Elizabeth is a shoe and handbag designer. DNA: How did you meet each other? We met in an art college in Virginia in an introductory art foundation course. It was crazy because Liz walked into the room and I immediately knew that this was a girl I needed to meet. And here we are many years later, best friends and business partners. DNA: How did Tomboy BKLYN begin? TB: As women of color, we observed that there was no platform for showcasing or representing our point of view on non-mainstream femininity or fashion. We were seeking a community that encourages expression of originality and diversity of body type, sexuality, and culture and so we decided to create it ourselves. We recognized that if we are feeling isolated from the conversation around fashion, that others must be too. DNA: Can you give us your own definition of a tomboy? Our definition of Tomboy is: noun- someone who connects feminine and masculine sides with ease and confidence, expressing the best of both worlds adjective- to be empowered, fearless, progressive, and innovative; to go against the grain

It’s the back room of our favorite Parisian bar where we smoked with the bar owner and staff after closing that still brings a smile to my face. I was lucky to have had the chance to visit nine cities over the span of 120 days. I explored places I never even imagined I would ever get to see: I stuck my
toes in the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona, smelled the strong aroma of spices in Marrakech, had a real cappuccino in Florence, ate the best pizza of my life (yes, the whole pizza) in the outskirts of Rome, and tasted the freshest pint Guinness in Ireland. I was there, I experienced, and I lived. I have never felt more young or alive. Traveling will change everything about yourself; it will change how you see yourself, it will change your view on the world and on the people that inhabit it; it will make you question everything you know and all the things you’ve never thought about. It will change you, for the better. It sounds like such a typical cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason:it’s the absolute truth. When I look back at the Eiffel Tower now, I see it through the rosiest of all glasses. I see a gangly group of young twenty-somethings laughing, drinking wine and champagne by the bottle, having the time of their lives. All under the sparkling, yet watchful, lights of la Tour Eiffel. From time to time, I let ouai slip into whatever conversation I can, a sweet reminder of the past few life-changing months. The word flickers off my tongue better than yeah ever did, and I can’t wait to find more words that bring back the same extraordinary memories.

Kent For a while now, we have been avid fans of Brooklyn jewelry designer Nettie Kent. We have watched her grow creatively and successfully through the years, from a debut group show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center to a cameo spot on an “artsy” Bravo reality show Gallery Girls back in 2012. These days, style icon Amber Valletta is an admirer of the line. Spending little moments with the designer, there is a beautiful energy that Nettie gives off when showing her favorite pieces from the collection. She puts all her passion into the work and you can feel the energy from that. That is what a true designer does. —Chloé Fontaine

“I HAVE A REALLY ACTIVE MIND, THERE ARE ONLY A FEW THINGS THAT QUIET IT AND I CAN GIVE MY FULL ATTENTION TO AND MAKING JEWELRY IS ONE OF THEM. DNA : At what point did you know that you wanted to start your own line? NK: It's really hard for me to pin point the moment, because it all happened so organically. I studied painting in college but it never felt right, my hands still felt idle, I wasn't absorbed by it 100%. The first time I carved wax and cast it into metal it was like BAM, this is it. I have a really active mind, there are only a few things that quiet it and I can give my full attention to and making jewelry is one of them. But even after discovering the craft of jew-

elry making I didn't think about where it would take me. When I moved back to New York after almost 3 years away, my number one intention was to start my line and launch Nettie Kent as a jewelry brand. DNA: What is the hardest part of the design process? NK: The fashion calendar is nuts for a designer, and I only put out 2 collections a year. I've never been one to create on demand and the demand can be over-
whelming. I'm just getting used to pro57
www.nettiekent.com ducing my last collection and its time to create a new one! The pressure to create a new line that is unique and exciting yet true to my brands aesthetic can be intense, but I've been doing this a few years now and have learned how to work with it, sometimes pressure and deadlines can provide that perfect creative anxiety that throws me into design mode. DNA: A few of your inspirations at the moment? NK: I just got back from a road trip with my fiance, mostly New Mexico. Just driving and soaking up that huge sky and the landscape that can change from flat tundra desert to huge mountains in a blink, and the colors! The colors in the South West are so inspiring, it makes so much sense why so many painters like Georgia O'Keefe and Agnes Martin moved there. I bought turquoise out there, called Kingman, from Arizona, it’s an incredible stone and I am so excited to use it in my next collection. Just having it in the studio is inspiring. DNA: Do you have any street-style favorites that you would love to see in Nettie Kent? NK: I just shot my AW14 look book with Claire Geist of De Lune Blog, as my model. I first noticed Claire for not only her great style but for her personality that really came through in how she presented herself. She is gorgeous, intelligent, funny and unique, three qualities I appreciate so much in people I work with. As for people I would love to see in my jewelry? I would love to see Lou Doillon in my jewelry, she has such an effortless and timeless style that I just love. DNA: What advice do you have for design students who have interests in starting in the industry? NK : Take a business class, I never did and had to learn it all the hard way!
