2020 Exhibition Judges: Laurel Porari: Laurel Porari is an artist who works in a variety of media. Porari’s works are intimate territories made from linens soaked in pigment and suspended in resin. They challenge typical representations of geographical spaces. She maps intersections of visual and cultural coordinates and questions the standard formalities of topographical surveying. Porcari says, “there is a sense that I start my pieces within the confines of fixed definitions of space, then by breaking the map open, the coordinates are set free to interact with each other. A point on a map meets a visual memory, and is extrapolated into a new shape.” The physical space of her work, depth, and layering result in familiar yet alien landscapes. Emerging and submerging patterns and colors are metaphors for stability. Her works are encapsulated, frozen within a border of clear resin, a sort of specimen slide of her mind’s geographical space. And, just as Egyptians soaked cloth in resin for a passage through time, she is preserving bits of her lifetime for future reference. The jewel-like quality to the work is Porari’s attempt to freeze-frame the moments, but they tend to leave a sense of longing for what’s next, and speak to a set of universal desires to marry the past, present and future. * * The above text is from Cole Pratt Gallery, New Orleans, web page, https://coleprattgallery.com
