SENIOR ISSUE 2020 VOLUME 02, ISSUE 03

FOREWORD To our fellow seniors, We were always taught to look both ways before crossing the street. Safety first, right? But this year, we looked both ways, stepped off of the sidewalk, and still got blindsided by a freight train. Of all the things we expected from our senior year, of all the lofty aspirations we had for our final days together as Nighthawks, none of us would have predicted a global pandemic. But collectively overcoming COVID-19 is not all that defines our class. Our Class of 2020 shouldn’t just be remembered in history as “the class that got their senior night, prom, and graduation canceled.” We are so much more than that. While we have undoubtedly missed out on a great deal over the past three months, we will never lose the other 1.9 million minutes of memories that we have written together at Del Norte over the past four years. We will always remember the first-day assembly of our senior year, screaming as loud as we could under the sweltering sun in those coveted white chairs. We will never forget the juicy goodness of a Board & Brew Baja Chicken on a sunny afternoon with friends after the last day of finals. And we won’t ever lose the thrills and excitement that we shared in the stands as our Nighthawks scored yet another touchdown or goal. As we reflect on our four years together, trying to find that one memory that captures the essence of our class, we keep finding ourselves going back to those evenings of float building under the stadium lights. And under those lights, together we crafted a gondola fit for the canals of Venice. Together we assembled a Jeep ready for adventure in Jurassic Park. And together, we embraced the spirit of the Roaring Twenties suitable for a party at Gatsby’s. Oh, how long ago those days were. But we don’t just cherish these memories for our artistic masterpieces, nor the delicious L&L Hawaiian Barbeque that ASB so generously provided. We treasure these memories because they are defining examples of our entire class working together. The float wasn’t for ASB, nor was it for Science Olympiad, nor was it for any one of the hundreds of clubs and organizations on campus. Regardless of whether we were in soccer or swim, drama or debate, band or baseball, we all worked together on one float representing the Class of 2020. At float building, we caught up with friends we hadn’t hung out with since third grade. We retold the dumbest decade-old jokes to recreate the laughter of the good old days. Through the sweat, paint, and tissue paper, we were together. And that unity is what truly defines our Class of 2020. Today, in a world that has moved almost completely online, where the only times you can meet your friends are when you’re six feet apart or separated by a screen, “Del Norte Class of 2020” lawn signs dot the front yards of countless houses within our neighborhood. These signs remind us that we are closer to each other than we may think and that we belong to the same family — the united and resilient Class of 2020. COVID-19 will only make our Class of 2020 stronger. Because of COVID-19, we’ve learned how to extract happiness from the simplest things in life. Because of COVID-19, we’ve realized the importance of self-care and mental health. Because of COVID-19, we’ve learned to treasure our face-to-face time with our friends and family (and wash our hands properly!). And because of COVID-19, we’ve become master chefs and artisan bakers. But most importantly, because of COVID-19, we will be more than prepared for life throws at us down the road. This too shall pass. And when it does, we can take pride in knowing that we did our part for our community, our nation, and our world. We will overcome. We will grow. Together. Congratulations, Class of 2020! We celebrate each and every one of you. Ellie Feng, Phoenix Dimagiba, Ayesha Aslam-Mir, Andrew Wang, and Skyler Wu

CLASS OF 2020, I can't believe you guys are already graduating and going off to college. I had the pleasure of seeing many of you grow up firsthand; I watched you guys grow as people, discovering and understanding the world in ways that make you who you are today. And I’m so, so proud of how far you’ve come. It seems like just a couple of years ago when I watched you guys promote to middle school, then to high school, and now your high school graduation is already at our doorstep. Watching all of you guys grow and find yourselves has made me realize that you guys have helped me to grow as well. In each of your different ways, you have taught me the importance of hard work, efficiency, and caring for those around me. To my sister, more than anyone, who has taught me what it means to be myself — no matter the tough love we gave each other growing up, she has taught me so much about knowing and being proud of who I am. Hey, you! If you’re reading this, I love you and I’m so, so proud of how far you’ve come. To Kenny, who I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and getting to know this year: thank you for teaching me that it’s okay to lean on and open up to others. You’ve been such a big source of comfort and I’m so thankful for you: you lit up my fourth period, day after day. To Melissa and Amber, who amaze me on and off the field: the strength, grit, and dedication you had for the team through each practice and game never failed to inspire me to grow as both a player and a person. To Chan, someone who I’ve known for basically my entire life, someone who I know, despite the distance, will be just an unwarranted text message away: thank

you for always saying hello to me in the halls (and by saying hello, of course I mean yelling my name over everyone’s heads without an actual hello), for teasing me, and never failing to make me smile. To Ken, for putting up with my relentless stupid questions, but always telling me what I needed to hear. To Ken, Nora, Alisha, and Sarah who filled my Wednesday nights with laughter throughout the entire mock trial season. To Skyler, who always nagged me to turn in my work on time, but always let me off the hook when I forgot. To the Academic League seniors who made each practice and game even more worth it. And to Ellie, Nikki, Reica, Katie, Jeanette, Emma, and so many others. I appreciate all of you endlessly, and I’m going to miss all of you unimaginably. May your futures be filled with happiness and prosperity, and may each of your days serve as a reminder of how much you have grown and how much more you will grow in the future. May your perseverance and hard work pay off, and may your tenacity and determination inspire others just as they inspired me. I hope you’ll be proud of who you are in the future, and if not, that you’ll grow, just as you have for the past 4 years, to become someone you’re proud of. I wish you all the best. Sincerely, Andrea Baek Class of 2022

TO OUR S Thank you for being role models on campus this year. You have driven Del Norte into an amazing direction that us freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can carry on. This has been one of the most fun years with pep rallies, football games, etc... To the ones who didn’t get their last goodbyes, I’m so sorry. Your futures will make up for this lost time. Live your life to the fullest, always.

Camilia Lavassani, ‘21 To all the seniors in quizbowl: I really enjoyed my time with all of you. I hope you will have a great time in college and wish you all a bright and prosperous future.

Joshua You, ‘21 Choir and Theatre Seniors!! Thank you so much for everything you have done for our programs and just being great friends! Getting to know you guys these past 3 years has been an amazing experience and truly an honor and I will miss you all so much. You guys are some of the most talented people I know; you guys will definitely go off and do great things in life. Love you!! - Nat ♥

Natalya Brown, ‘21 Hi Class of 2020! On behalf of my entire class I know we feel so sorry that your remaining senior year was taken away. I am so proud of everyone in all their accomplishments through high school and you all deserve to be recognized tremendously. Thank you for showing us the way, we love you!

Raven Skidmore, ‘21

Congratulations class of 2020! I’m sorry you had your year stolen from you. History has its eyes on you. It’s impressive how the seniors are handling this with such grace. Also, congratulations Zach, you did it!! I’m so proud of you. Xoxo, Marisa <3

Marisa Carelli, ‘21 Thank you for all you have done. You guys certainly made Del Norte memorable. From the seniors in link crew to the club founders to the average senior, thank you for guiding me through classes and navigating high school life. I hope that you still had an amazing year even if it did get cut short. Enjoy your summer and everything that comes after! Please stay in touch and don’t let senioritis haunt you!

Mabel Szeto, ‘21 to the seniors on the girls waterpolo teamthank you. thank you for being so friendly from day 1 freshman year. thank you for teaching me the majority of what i know of the sport. thank you for making me laugh and smile even when it got tough. thank you and i love you guys 4eva!

Kelsey Hughes, ‘21 Shoutout to all the seniors in choir and theatre. I’ve had so much fun with you guys the past few years putting on some amazing productions and concerts. You are all so talented and I hope that you will continue to pursue music and theatre, whether it’s for fun or as a career, because your light and energy on stage is so amazing and beautiful. I love you guys and I wish you the best.

Lucky Wayani, ‘21

Have a nice life!

Cynthia Wang, ‘21 Thank you for making your impact at Del Norte, even if it seems like it couldn’t have been completed. The classes of ‘21, ‘22 and ‘23 will miss the livelihood, energy and overall greatness of the class of 2020 more than they have ever known!

Audrey Dennison, ‘22 Dear Class of 2020, you have contributed so much to this school! I know that you all will do amazing things in the future and I can’t wait to hear of your successes. Thank you for being great role models! You will be missed!

Sanvi Pal, ‘22 To all the seniors: congrats on getting past these four (most likely) exhausting years of your life! I wish nothing but the best for your future endeavors!

Flora Yuan, ‘22 Very well done setting such a great precedent for the underclassmen. Without seeing all the clubs started and achievements made by you all, much of us wouldn't know what we could do, what we could accomplish, or how our far hard work could reach. I hope that your future accomplishments and graduations don't suck as much as quarantine right now, but hard working as you are, you'll find a solution. Good luck!

Aidan Rosen, ‘22

SENIORS Dear class of 2020, From showing us around from the moment we got here to becoming some of my best friends in my classes, on my team and more, you will always hold a special place in my heart and I hope you're successful in everything you aim for in your futures! Thank you for the many memories and I hope you make many more good ones :)

Sarika Pasumarthy, ‘22 Hi Seniors! I just want to thank all of you for being such nice people. As an underclassman I always look up to you for advice and how I want to be when I get older. You guys are off to better places in the world and I want you to show the world how nighthawks are!

Ethan Ton, ‘22 I love you all! I’m so grateful for all of you that I’ve gotten to meet! Hope you enjoyed high school & have fun in life! :)

While forever isn’t enough time to spend with some of my closest friends in the whole wide world, I’ll settle for moments like our free periods in AP Bio, our crazy long tournament days, and our long talks about anything and everything. As we move forward, I wish you the same amount of joy and laughter that you have offered me over the past two years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being my mentors and more importantly, my friends. I love you all so unbelievably much. Congratulations once again (and come down to visit)!

Coming into Del Norte this year I was most intimidated by the seniors and their carefree, confident attitudes. However I soon found out that some of these seniors would make a huge impact on my life and how I saw myself and others. Thank you to those seniors that have given me life advice, helped me with everyday problems and reminded me to enjoy my life. You didn’t get a formal graduation or a traditional third tri, but none of your hard work goes unnoticed. We are proud of you and wish you well into the next chapter of your lives. Congrats!

Hannah Chen, ‘22

Adrita Chakraborty, ‘23

Thank you seniors for being so helpful and kind during my first year in high school! I have gotten to know a few of you personally and can say that although all of you will be missed in Del Norte, I know you will be off doing amazing things in college and beyond! Best of luck and I can't wait to see what you accomplish in the future :)

Class of 2020! Though I am only a freshman, I have so much gratitude for all of the rising seniors that I have encountered this year. You have all been beyond caring to me and my peers, despite all of our differences. I look forward to seeing all of your future accomplishments, and I’ll be cheering for you from Del Norte, especially you Ellie ;)

Ellen Xu, ‘23 Katelin Shum, ‘22 i would just like to say a huge thank you to the band seniors for being such amazing leaders to look up to from the start (esp kenny choi !!) ever since the beginning of freshman year i’ve felt nothing but kindness from them and i’ve made a whole lot of amazing memories with many of them. i never got the feeling that they felt like they were better than me just because they were older than me and i wanted to let them know that i appreciate them so so much and wish them the best on their future endeavors <3

Isabella Yan, ‘22

Anna Feng, ‘23

To the seniors that I was able to get to know and love over this school year, thank you. Whether I met you through a class I had, through color guard, through clubs I joined, or through my sister (who’s also a senior!), you made part of my high school experience and freshmen year more enjoyable. Even though our time together was cut short, I will always cherish the memories we made together. I wish you all the best in life!

Someday you’ll look back at this magazine and think about the people and events that shaped your high school experience. You all have been the best role models anyone could’ve wanted and all your passion and dedication are sure to lead you all far. Although the freshman only got to be part of the Nighthawk family for a year, this was a great way to start our journey and end yours. I wish you all the best!

Kristine Gonzales, ‘23

Nicole Pi, ‘23

FROM OUR Seniors, I know this is not what we imagined our year being like, but we will get through it and we will be remembered as the generation that survived a global pandemic!

Adam Khan, ‘20 I will always remember the 4 years we have spent together even if it was cut short. I will miss so many things from the Friday night football games, to just seeing friends in the halls. I love you class of 2020 and wish everyone the very best for their future!

Morgan White, ‘20

I really miss the freedom of being able to see friends and have face-to-face interactions, especially since a lot of friends are moving away farther than a quick drive. But oh well, life has its ups and downs. Big ups to my favorite of the class of 2023, Ethan Joo. You’re a beast!

Thank you class of 2020 for making these four years feel like the best four years of my life. You guys are so passionate and energetic and compassionate as a whole. And although I may not have know everyone in the class, it still felt like a family. We are 2020, a CLASS to remember

Brandon Nguyen, ‘20

Raelle Vargas, ‘20

Thank you, to my senior class, for making these four years memorable and unforgettable!

High school taught me a lot. I’ve got skills building up my abilities of being a student and a leader thanks to high school. I learned more about what makes me passionate, and I’ve become a better musician thanks to high school. Also, even though I’m not all the way there yet, thanks to the people I’ve met since high school started, I’ve learned to accept myself for who I am. I’ve learned to respect myself more and leave behind things that weren’t good for me.

Alexis Luquen, ‘20 We did it! We graduated!

I am so glad I got to meet the people I did in high school. There may have been drama and some fall outs along the way, but those interactions helped shape me into who I am today and for that I'm grateful. I'm happy to call my friends Friends and can't wait for how college strengthens them.

Dylan Salas, ‘20 Thank you Macy, Jane, Sarah, Ellie, Netta, Bella, Josh, Kevin, Satvik, Kenny, Chan, and Evan for all the good times <3

Margaret Pegg, ‘20

Nora Mousa, ‘20

Del Norte was a place that defied typical high school norms. Our class in particular was a product of inclusivity and acceptance. We were like a family and i’ll forever be grateful for that.

Hey seniors! I don't think anyone expected the way this year would turn out, but you've all worked so hard and I'm proud to be graduating with you this year! Go Nighthawks!

When I first arrived on the first day of school at Del Norte for my freshman year, I had only been in 4s Ranch for 2 days. I felt isolated and lost. It was through the kindness of Noah Reyes and many others that allowed me to perceive Del Norte as home. Here, I produced a myriad of pleasant memories that will never fade, such as campaigning for junior class president, sneaking up on to the roof, partying with my friends, and so much more. Senior year may have ended abruptly, but I will always cherish the time we shared here together!

Hazelle Gunawan, ‘20

Mahroos Haider, ‘20

Amber Pucan, ‘20

Jade Bajado, ‘20 I just want to express how glad I got to go here. Walking into this school two years ago as a new kid, I had no idea what was awaiting. In my time at this campus, I got to experience so many academic, athletic, and personal successes which helped me truly grow as a person. To my friend group, you make me so happy and I am so grateful we met. Whether it was getting boba, going to the beach, or just hanging at someone house, I had such a fun time. I will never forget running around the whole Disneyland park on our senior trip, sitting together at school assemblies, or feeling that special excitement when we got a class together. While my time here was even shorter than expected I wouldn’t trade in these last 2 years for anything else. Love, Keili

Keili Chien, ‘20

R SENIORS Even though it may seem that the world is failing us, there still are ways you can smile and make worthwhile.

Congratulations to my fellow classmates and I am so excited for the adventures to come the next four years!

Maile Pacumio, ‘20

Diana Garcia, ‘20

Best wishes for all you do. You can do it!

To the class of 2020, thank you for the laughs, the friendships, and the memories I won’t soon forget. Thank you for showing me what it means to be a nighthawk!! I know that we won’t be able to finish out our senior year, dance at our final prom, or maybe sit at those white chairs together at graduation, but the time we did have together was truly unforgettable. I can’t wait to see the amazing things you do and places you’ll go! Thank you, and peace out class of 2020!

Emily Podzunas, ‘20 Thank you and good luck to everyone I worked with throughout my amazing high school journey and in my extracurriculars!

Eric Chen, ‘20 The last four years at Del Norte had its ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Soar high, stay fly, always reach for the sky :D.

McKaila Smith, ‘20

Hoping to transfer to SDSU or a UC after two years!

SELENA ZHU!!! We’re finally going to college! Thanks for being my best friend, for being the one person I could always go to. I love ya, and I’ll miss you. I’m going to crash your house once quarantine is over so be prepared!

Jasmine Salami, ‘20

Judith Park, ‘20

I didn't get to know much of the senior class, but I'm grateful for the lessons and memories that everyone has shared with me. I'm sad that the coronavirus messed up everyone's senior plans, but I hope that everyone is staying safe. I know that everyone has a bright future ahead of them, and I look forward to new experiences at Cal. Go Bears! Also shoutouts to Mrs. Cheskaty and Mrs. Marron for always being there when I needed support.

Thank you! Thank you to everyone who was a part of my journey and truly made high school an experience for me.

Kelechi Uhegbu, ‘20

Andrew Wang, ‘20

Dear Del Norte's class of 2020. WE DID IT! Although the pandemic has split us all apart, we finished strong. It's been a wild ride at the nest but the memories made will never be forgotten. These 4 years have been the stepping stones of becoming an adult. We now know our weaknesses and our strengths and as we move on, us knowing our weaknesses will give us a chance to improve on them. These four years were tough and stressful but in the end, we stayed and finished strong. Congratulations to everyone and good luck with your future endeavors!

Kevin Shihora, ‘20 To my dearest friends, those who have held true to me through years of depravity and poise, grief and joy, highs and lows: I shall mourn you. I shall mourn the years we will no longer have with each other, the lives we'll live apart from another, the memories we've made and might never make again. But know this: there is a reunion after this mourning. We will see each other again, be it in a month or a year or a decade. These goodbyes are not forever; they last until we see each other again.

Ken Zhou, ‘20

To the Class of 2020! Although we’ve had a rough patch in our journey, I am so proud of you all for persevering and getting through these hard times! I wish you all the best and our class will never be forgotten!

I'm super excited for all the experiences I'll have in college! I'm so thankful for my parents' support and all my teachers who helped me get this far. Del Norte has been an amazing place these past 4 years, both in preparing me academically and helping me branch out with things like performing arts and computer programming. I've made multiple incredible friends that I know I'm going to stick with for a long time. Stay rockin and keep flockin Nighthawks!

Jillian Smith, ‘20

Zach Sutherland , ‘20

Sophia Shannon, ‘20

In the never ending darkness of social conformity, there is a light that strikes through...that light is not high school but life after graduation.

William Reid, ‘20 Even though senior year was cut short I’m thankful for the time I was able to spend with my peers.

Alisha Supanekar, ‘20 To everyone who will want an authentic autograph of mine once I am famous, I am hereby digitally giving you my signature and appreciation. Love, Anya.

Anya Chandorkar, ‘20 good job gamers, proud of all of us

Brandon Wang, ‘20 Dear Class of 2020, we made it. Even though the end of our senior year may not be what we wanted, we still made lifelong memories during the rest of high school. Our journey together really showed me that we are all so diverse and nothing is out of our limits. I hope you know that our journey as Nighthawks isn’t ending but it’s simply beginning. Here’s to many more happy memories!

Sriya Avadhanam, ‘20

It has been an honor to spend my last four years with a group of such dedicated, compassionate, and creative individuals. I have grown so much because of the time I spent with you all. I can’t wait to see the incredible things you all will do!

Emma Adamson, ‘20 Class of 2020 we did it through all the ups and downs and we will always be a Nighthawk no matter where we end up in life!

Paige Amble, ‘20

Hello class of 2020! Although our senior year did not go quite as we planned, we should be very proud of what we’ve accomplished. I am so thankful that I can look back on these past four years and say that I’ve grown incredibly, made life-long friends, and created unforgettable memories as a Nighthawk. The next chapter of our lives will bring new people, new experiences, and new memories, and I can’t wait to see how far we fly in the future.

Jaelyn Daluraya, ‘20

I am thankful for all the people I have met during high school and I wish the best for everyone.

Class of 2020! This is truly a special class with many talented individuals that I’ve learned and grew from. We have supported each other to get the very best of ourselves. I have met so many people and made some amazing memories. While it hurts to not properly celebrate, we can be proud of what we accomplished and we will always be a part of one of the most special graduating classes. I wish everyone the best of luck as we move along with our lives and hope we can cross paths again one day.

Alec Tufenkjian, ‘20

Riley Thornton, ‘20

Thank you to all of my friends for your consistent support and guidance throughout high school. You guys are amazing and extraordinary people, and I am so thankful for everything that you have done for me. And to the class of 2020, thank you for enduring in such a difficult time. You guys are amazing and I can't wait to see just how far you'll go!

Being unable to hug it out in-person, I just wanted to thank my friends for all the experiences that we've shared together over the years. To all the homies in Speech and Debate, Math Team, Science Olympiad, and The Featheralist, I could not have asked for a better group of teammates! It was an honor to work, laugh, eat, and ride Ferris Wheels together. It's been a good run, friends! I look forward to our 10th, 20th, and hopefully 100th class reunions!

Amanda DeLessio, ‘20

Skyler Wu, ‘20

Anshul Sinha, ‘20 Well, we're at the end of this road. It hasn't always fun, and it hasn't always been easy, but I can say I'm glad to have spent four years here with all of you. Thank you to my CyberPatriot and swim teammates, my Featheralist colleagues, and most importantly my friends. Without all of you, I wouldn't be the man I am today.

Phoenix Dimagiba, ‘20 Senioritis hits hard

Boden Davis, ‘20

Despite not being able to say a proper goodbye to senior year and Del Norte, I am still so grateful for these past four years and everyone who has helped make Del Norte feel like home. I am endlessly proud of all of us and we all deserve to celebrate our accomplishments and the brilliant people we have become.

Ellie Feng, ‘20 There were many fleeting moments in our last four years as Nighthawks: sports seasons, pep rallies, and even those high school crushes. But Class of 2020, I’m proud to say that the memories I’ve made with everyone—wild football games, dances, laughter—can never disappear, so let’s treasure them! We’ll always be one flock, one Nest, one Nighthawk nation!

Jonathan Lee, ‘20 To all of the seniors: Thank you for making high school wild and exciting every day. Thank you for trying to be friends with everyone, and hyping up those who may not feel as cared about. Thank you for showing me who I can become and getting me outside of my comfort zone:) I love you all and wow I am so excited to see you change the world! -Alexis Long <3

Alexis Long, ‘20 Thank you for everything, Del Norte! It's been a wild time, but I'm grateful for the people that I could share it with.

Julia Willey, ‘20 Thank you all so much for the past four years! I have learned so much about myself and about the world by being in your presence every day. I wish you all the best in the future! Xoxo -Natalie Schirmacher

Natalie Schirmacher, ‘20

Class of 2020, I thank you for being a life changing influence. We are unquestionably the the most spirited class Del Norte has ever seen! We’ve been through a lot together. To Del Norte, thank you for the opportunity to succeed and pursue the things I am happiest doing. To my friends, thank you for the smiles, laughs, and great memories. Travel safe, and God bless.

Finley Lamb, ‘20 Despite each and every one of us going to all different places across the country, maybe even the globe, we are and will always be nighthawks at heart. Our senior year will one to remember, not because of our prom or our senior events that might not happen, and not even because of Covid-19, but because we stayed true to who we were through it all. Like they say “Half the fun is getting there.” Even though we can’t have a textbook ending, our journey through it all and the relationships we’ve made matter the most. What will define us as the Class of 2020 is our strong adversity. Stay safe out there and always stay true to who you are!

Don’t overload yourself because all that stress isn’t worth it. Work hard but also kick back, relax and just enjoy the ride.

Tanner Tollestrup, ‘20 I love you Roro

Kwanwoo Andy Lee, ‘20 Corona sucks. It's robbed and cheated us of our senior year, the best year of high school. No longer can I fail a test without caring or assert my dominance over the freshman. We don't know what will come in the next month, maybe murder hornets, maybe and asteroid, but we will persevere. Let's be thankful that we are well off compared to others. We might miss graduation but let's be thankful that we're not graduating college right now... RIP class of 2020.

Christopher Hyncik, ‘20 It was a good four years

Christopher Navarro, ‘20

Daniel Herrick, ‘20

The memories I’ve made at school and during all the times in between have made the abrupt end to senior year so heartbreaking. To all my friends I hope I get to see you again, and if I don’t I wish you happiness and the best in life. Thank you for being by my side these past few years, you’ve given me so many reasons to miss high school. Since we don’t have senior quotes I‘m putting what mine would be here: “Thicc thighs save lives”. I love you class of 2020, thank you so much for the memories.

I’m so proud of my fellow seniors! We have preserved through so much! I can’t wait to see what amazing things you all do in the future!

Francesca Feidelberg, ‘20

Phoebe Farnsworth, ‘20 Such a strange end to an otherwise incredible 4 years. To all the seniors, my friends, members of the Theatre Society, Choir groups, and XC team, I have enjoyed this journey so much with you all. I will never forget the laughs and learnings. And, as the late great Robin Williams said, "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it."

Stay fly and soar high

FROM THE TEACHERS Mr. Tom Swanson

Mr. Jason Askegreen

First of all, I have felt tremendous sympathy for you guys as this is not how anyone envisions the end of their high school career. However, in so many ways this is a lesson in life that the best laid plans rarely occur the way we planned them. So my main message to all of you is this, allow yourself to explore - that means different classes, careers, friendships, the world (when safe). Don't have a singular blueprint for how life has to progress - because it won't. Plus, what you want out of life now is so much different than what it will be years from now, so give yourself the chance to grow and not have to have things figured out in the near future. Also, appreciate what you have - while this is an unfortunate ending to this year, you have had the privilege to go to a pretty nice school in a safe and supportive community - not everyone gets that opportunity. So when disappointments happen, always remember the benefits that you have accrued as well perspective usually allows life to balance out. We will miss all of you and let us know the adventures you undertake!

Peace for your soul is not a mystery. You'll find it in the giving of yourself, your time, your resources. Hoarding leads to misery, but joy comes from serving others. Be that friendly and helpful neighbor, be that colleague that goes the extra mile even though you may not get the credit, be that person that loves and takes care of your family. Blessings to you all, and with whatever you have in the moment you have it, whether good or bad, make lemonade; the very best lemonade to share with others. We'll miss you Nighthawks!

Mr. Nick Nevares This is not how any of us wanted your senior year to end. Yet, at the same time, this will not be your legacy. We will remember the way you enriched our lives and our school for your 2 million minutes here. Next year brings great uncertainty for any senior, but more so for the class of 2020. Just know, that when the world seems challenging, we are always here to guide and support you. If you find yourself in need, reach out, we will be there. Thank you for sharing your time with us and know you will always be in our hearts.

Ms. Courtney Craig While the times may be unusual, your accomplishments deserve full recognition. We have loved every one of your 2 million minutes you've spent with us here at the Nest, and hope that we have done our best to elevate you to be college & career ready and focused on your future. These uncertain times may change your path a bit, but one thing is certain - we are proud of you making it through your 4 years here at Del Norte, a challenging place that has pushed you beyond your comfort zone, brought you close to others around you, and has given you the support you needed to fly. You will always have a place in our hearts, and are always welcome back here. Best of luck to you - may you always remember us as we will remember you!

Ms. Lauren DeCaprio Choose to Remember With love and admiration, Mrs. DeCaprio

Ms. Melissa Darcey You’ve all heard the messages about how you were robbed of a proper senior sendoff, and while you were, I hope you forget the present and, instead, look toward the future and reflect on the past with a smile. You are an incredible group of students and I know you are all off on the most exciting adventure of your life: adulthood. To my World Lit students: don’t be emo like Hamlet or go into a roid rage like Okonkwo. Embrace Santiago’s curiosity as you seek your treasure; Mu Lan’s strength for overcoming challenges; Cinderella’s kindness when making friends and even foes; and Siddhartha’s determination to identify what’s important to you in life. If you’ve already forgotten these references, please don’t tell me.

Mr. Patrick Coleman To the Class of 2020. Very simply; we love you, you are strong, you are proven and you will SOAR! Now you will lead us into the future, and though it may be changed, you will make it AMAZING!

Choose to remember your first day, your orientation, your Link Crew leaders, and your first class. Choose to remember your first all night study session, your first crush, and your first pep rally. Decide that your school dances and football games are what you bring with you. Focus on the fun, the silly, and the laughable moments. Think about your favorite teachers, coaches, and counselors. Remind yourself of the band performances, school plays, and Nights at the Museum. Remember your most embarrassing moments and the moments you are most proud of. Remind yourself of your best friends and those that helped you when you needed it. Choose to remember the physics boat parades, group projects, and final exams. Remember that one bombed test and how much you learned about time management from it. Never forget the time you broke a rule and got caught. Allow yourself to laugh at your worst fashion choices over the years. Remember where you have come from and focus on where going. Remind yourself of all the good that is in the world and choose to add to it. Channel the energy that lined the halls of Del Norte and radiated from the Flock. Be proud of your growth and your accomplishments. Appreciate the best advice you ever received and laugh at the worst. Allow yourself to grow and change but always appreciate who you are right now. Connect with those around you and focus on quality relationships in your life. Know that you get everywhere in life by being nice. Choose to make your life interesting. Choose to celebrate yourself and each other. Don’t take life too seriously. Know that we are all cheering you on! Know that you will always be a Nighthawk. You get to choose. Choose joy.

Dr. Trent Hall

Ms. Leigh Cole

Your class has definitely been given a unique experience, but you also know that this fits your generation. For years, you have known that many of the established social structures need updating. You know the environment, levels of violence, and basic function of our education institutions all need to be addressed and adjusted to modern needs. My way of trying to encourage you through this unique experience would be to see it as the possible changes you may see in your lifetime that could help progression. Use your experiences as a way to think about how you could encourage different perspectives and approaches to life that would fit more with the lifestyles that you would like to lead rather than having to adjust to outdated and static forms of society that may hold you back. As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Congratulations! Your experience is unique and special in its own way. You will remember this year vividly and fondly. I understand your situation a little, as I was in the last class at my high school and don't have a school to go back to for homecoming. It's not the same, but creates a special bond for your class. Embrace each other and YOUR experience. It is what separates you from the rest! The Class of 2020 will be the only class who will have this story. GO forward, FLY from the nest and ACHIEVE greatness!

Ms. Kim Woolstencroft Ms. Lauren Ruggiero ¡Felicitaciones clase de 2020! Keep learning and building the life of your dreams. Don’t worry about the things you can’t control and pursue your own happiness with tenacity!

Mr. Tyler Moulton If anyone can make a lasting change in the world, it is surely the class of 2020. It may be the end of the world as we know it (for now), but you are all poised to make something great happen. The level of perseverance, resilience, and exuberance you have all shown is something we should all aspire to!

Class of 2020 (especially my athletes): Times are uncertain right now, even more than they would be during a regular school year while approaching your graduation and the beginning of a new phase of life. You don't know exactly what lies ahead even if you do know the path you will be traveling. Keep in mind that there are so many people ready and willing to help you on your journey from parents and coaches, to teachers and administrators. We are all happy to help with anything you need. Try not to fear the future but instead look ahead with hope that things will get better and become more normal. I can assure you that the next few years after high school are going to present you with so many challenges, opportunities, and memories. These years will truly help shape the person you will become. Follow your heart and use your head. At some point all birds must spread their wings to fly! You were born for this moment. Keep your face toward the rising sun. You can and will succeed no matter what obstacles you face in life. Lastly, prioritize your health!

Mr. Mark Wollman

Ms. Juli Cheskaty

Congratulations to each and everyone of you. I have not had the pleasure to meet each of you but I am impressed by the leadership, compassion, inclusion, and positivity you have all shown during the school year. I could not be prouder to say I am a nighthawk and that is because you each if you. Good luck to you in the future.

I miss you all so much. My favorite parts about being a teacher at DN is celebrating your arrival on our campus when you are newbies and being the last in line at the graduation ceremony to hug and high 5 you as you all embark on the next part of your journey. You are important and special and not even a pandemic can take that away from you. I wish you the best and encourage you to be strong even though this is not how you wanted the end of your senior year to go. I am sending you virtual hugs. Congratulations on all you have worked so hard for. Please remember, we are family, so please keep in touch. We LOVE hearing from you and will always be here to celebrate your accomplishments and lift you up in times of struggle.

Ms. Sue Reich Seniors, First, I sure hope you all have been documenting your COVID-19 experiences. Even though your senior year was cut short and you may feel (legitimately) robbed of some life 'right of passages', the class of 2020 has a unique story to share with the world! Your traditional accolades will be replaced with something more deep and authentic than past graduating Nighthawks. This experience offers you the opportunity and the time to truly reflect on what motivates you and figure out what you want to do when the world opens back up! Redeem this time! The class of 2020 has so much to share with the world; I can't wait to hear your stories!

Ms. Kathleen Marron As you close out your senior year with new phrases such as social distancing and distance learning, know that you have each made a lasting impact on the nest. You have demonstrated resiliency and courage in the face of uncertain times and learned to live with the “new normal”. Your lives will be forever shaped by these experiences as you write your own unique pages in history. As you spread your wings towards the future, you will continue to learn, discover, innovate, lead and change lives. In the words of Michelle Obama, “Our greatness comes when we appreciate each other’s strengths, when we learn from each other, when we lean on each other.” You have touched my life and I am forever grateful for the time that you have shared with me. You make me smile and brighten each and every day. What I know is that the future is in good hands. And when you come to a crossroads in life, may you pause to reflect and remember for a moment the cherished time you spent as a Nighthawk at Del Norte High School. Congratulations, Class of 2020! Believe in your dreams and share your gifts with the world!

Mr. Kevin Keller First off I want congratulate the class of 2020 on reaching the goal of graduating from Del Norte High School. As someone who has taught at different schools in the county I know that this high school is a special place and challenges students daily and to graduate from here is an accomplishment you can all be proud of. This has truly been a unique year in so many ways and you guys have handled it all very well. I like all of you really wish the year would have ended a different way and am sad that you did not get to experience those special end of year celebrations that usually accompany this time of your life. We will get through this and soon you will be moving onto the next chapter in your life. That one were you get to build on the person you are and/or reinvent yourself into a whole new being. I wish you all the best in the years ahead and will leave you with this quote, ""Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do"". Best of luck to each and every one of you.

Ms. Cherie Nydam As I sat down to write a note to you, I decided to look back at some of your faces in the yearbook. Row, by row, by row the faces turned into memories of kind, caring, fun, and intelligent kids. Kids I got to know through class, homeroom, float building or clubs. I couldn’t stop smiling, you really are fantastic. Really. What I feel makes Del Norte such a special place is the people. And while Del Norte has helped you become who you are today, together you have made Del Norte a memorable experience for your class and surrounding grades too. As you graduate you take the Del Norte Way with you. . . and leave Del Norte a better place. I am so excited for you all and your future.

Ms. Kimberly Pytel Seniors, I am so proud of you. Congratulations on your graduation! The sadness and frustration that you have felt this year is nothing compared to all of the wonderful experiences you’ve gained from your time at DNHS and all the AWESOME moments that are in your future! Make your legacy one to remember and to be admired. There will be so many opportunities for you to SHINE in this life; make sure to shine as bright as possible. You will be missed!

Some advice. . . find your people. Maybe in your job, classes, intramurals, the dorm. . . good friends make a huge difference in your life. If college is in your future, sit in the front. You’ll have to arrive early, as in college everyone wants to sit in the front. Meet people who know what they are doing (they will be in the front too) and study with them. You have the tools and smarts, combine those with your creativity, kindness and work ethic and you will find your dreams. I wish you all the best. You’ve got this!

Ms. Joan Smith Class of 2020, you have certainly had an eventful high school career! While this is not the ending any of us could have ever imagined, I know we are sending out a resilient, thoughtful, intelligent and ambitious group of seniors. I am proud of all of you for what you've already accomplished, and for the greatness that I know lies ahead. Stay connected to your family, your friends, and your values- they will continue to guide and center you as you step out into the world. Best wishes to all and stay healthy!

Ms. Tasha Giffin It isn't the party at the finish line, or the piece of paper with your accomplishment typed out, that means the most. What changes you, and what makes a mark on you, is the journey. It's all the blood, sweat, and tears that refine you into a stronger person. It's the smiles, laughter, and memories that fill you with hope and joy. These are the things you take with you from your high school career, and that will forever be a part of what makes you who you are. Nothing can take that away, even if the closing ceremony looks a bit different than you imagined. You have accomplished so much. You had to dig deeper than ever to finish this race strong, and you are doing just that. You are forging new paths into uncharted territory. We are so proud of you for being brave and for keeping your hopes set high! Go Soar Class of 2020!

Ms. Jo Buehler I am proud to have been your teacher and want the very best for you. I know that you have a vision of what your life would be like after high school, and believe me, you can still have that life. Keep believing in your dreams. Other advice I have for you as you wait at home to hear what the future brings: Use your time at home to learn how to cook all your favorite meals, so you can make them when you move out. Enjoy the time you have with your family, and try to bring joy to other people when you can. Best of luck class of 2020!

Ms. Lauren Chase Dear Class of 2020: I can't thank you enough for making my first year at DNHS so memorable and enjoyable. I am in awe of how dedicated you are to school, athletics, art, music and the greater community; it is truly inspiring. I will cherish the relationships I made with so many of you and remember all that you have taught me. Your resiliency will bring you far in life and I can't wait to hear about the big things you will go on to do in the upcoming years. Keep your heads held high and look out for one another!
