Mounting A Scope On Your Firearm? This Is What You Need To Know

Page 1

Until recently, it wasn't that common to see scopes and telescopic sights on firearms, but now they are mounted on rifles, shotguns, and handguns offering a host of advantages, including being able to zoom in on objects in the distance, making aiming more accurate. Most hunting rifles today are already drilled and tapped, ready to mount an optic at any time. If you are new to shooting, then mounting a scope may seem a little daunting, but it's quite a simple process. It all starts with selecting the right scope that fits not only your firearm but your budget. You can choose between fixed power or variable with variable power scopes enabling you to change magnification within a certain range. The best way to choose a scope is to determine the objective of the scope, are you going to be shooting long-range hunting, for example? The next step is to choose the base and rings, which are important to mountain a scope. You need bases, rings and a scope to complete the installation. Bases are where the mounting attaches to the firearm, which is usually done with screws. The base is responsible for supporting the rings. The scope base is screwed onto the receiver of the firearm. Most hunting rifles today come already drilled and tapped. The base must sit securely and properly in place, tying the scope and rings to the rifle. The lever on the side of the base will allow the rings to be released, enabling you to remove the scope or change scopes quickly and easily. Some rifles come with the base already machined into the gun, you do not need to purchase them separately. In addition to this, you need to know the height of the rings you need to hold the scope above the firearm bore. The choice you make will be determined by the size of the scope and how your head is positioned on the stock when you have your gun on your shoulder. Medium is the most common choice, but they do go up to extra high. The scope ring width is the diameter of the tube of the scope, most of which are one inch in thickness. Some expensive scopes can have 30mm diameters. Ensure the rings match the scopes tube diameter before you make your purchase. Once you have everything in front of you, you will want to install the rings to the base. Some will twist into place, while others will be screwed down. Some need a Torx head tool or hex, ensure this tool is included when you make your purchase so you can complete your mounting.

Torx wrenches are used to secure the screws in place. Ensure the base and rings are all securely tightened. The majority of scope rings come with a left or right half of the upper and lower half. For those that are divided horizontally, it is important to attach the lower half of the ring first, securing the front and rear screws. Then lay the firearm over and tighten the upper half of the ring. Rings that are cut in the left and right half, rather than an upper and lower half, are strong systems. Once you tighten the rings and base, you can tighten everything up, ensuring the scope is secured between both sets of ring halves. The base must be securely locked in place. Do not tighten the scope rings too early, wait until you have the scope in place, ensuring it is properly aligned before tightening the rings.
