SELECTED WORK OF 2016-2022

My design apporach, developed over five years of architecture study, centers on creating sustainable, innovative solutions that integrate adaptive reuse, rehabilitation, and the incorporation of green spaces to enhance the well-being of inhabitants and contribute to a better future for all.

“SPIRITS OF QUARRY” is a unique distillery project that blends itself into its surroundings with a rock-like roof structure, inviting visitors to explore the enchanting space above and underneath it. “THE CRECENT” is a visionary affordable student housing project that seamlessly integrates commercial and green spaces, including a crescent-shaped green walkway above a nearby highway. “BREATHING POLSKA” incorporates various sustainable design elements, such as rainwater reuse systems, timber structures, renovation, and passive design, in a student housing competition project. Finally, “STAY IN JEONGDONG” is an adaptive reuse project that reveals a wealth of cultural heritage by wrapping the existing road around the reused building, creating a dynamic, immersive experience that blends the old with the new.

Through my projects, I tried to create spaces that are not only beautiful and functional, but also sustainable and accessible. I am committed to continuing my exploration of innovative design solutions that push the boundaries of what is possible in architecture, and look forward to contributing to better future.

01 SPIRITS OF QUARRY

Traditional Soju Distillery in the Heart of Stone

Abandoned Quarry

The site is located in a mountainous and rocky terrain where several abandoned quarries are located. Currently used as a waste disposal facility, the man made landscape gives a atmoshpere that no other place in Seoul can give. Seoul city has been searching for a way to rehabilitate this area for a long time.

Production Facility

Prodution facilites are closed space that is operates around the production line. It is accessible only to limited users and space for visitors are limited.

Dividing & Connecting

Pulbic Rehabilitaion

Rehabilitation of spaces like this quarry is bound to have a purpose of public space. It becomes open space for all kinds of users

01 Abandoned Quarry

The quarry is currentlly used as a waste disposal facility, not doing justice to the potential of the site and remains inaccessible to visitors of the area.

02 Linking Roof with Quarry

The rock-like roof structure creates a continuous landscape, blending in with the quarry and providing a visual connection to the production facility while separating the circulation.

01 Program - Distillery

The two major spaces that is needed for soju production was placed. Maturation space being stationary space, it was sperated from Production space that is active space where the rest of the productions are done.

02 Program - Visitor Center

Vistior spaces were placed where major process of making soju can be viewed. Visitor center on the vertical top part of the site was oriented toward another quarry.

03 Vertical Circulation

Vertical Circulations that allows visitors to navigate throughout the site are added. Two vertical circulation are elevator and stair that is accessible all day for public use.

04 Roof Circulation & Facade

The building’s rock-like form embeds continuous circulation that weaves throughout the site, allowing visitors to glimpse the soju-making process while also welcoming natural light. The carvedout sections also create a play of light and shadow, and the vertical façade evokes the image of a cross-section of a cut stone.

Spirit of Traditional Soju

Crafting traditional Korean soju is an intricate process that requires time and expertise. The fermentation, distillation, and maturation stages are critical in producing a high-quality spirit, and this project seeks to visually connect visitors with the time-honored techniques behind the craft. The serene and timeless aesthetic of the distillery’s stonelike design embodies the essence of the sojumaking process.

02 THE CRESCENT

Interweaving Green into Concrete Jungle

Youth Housing

The goal of youth housing is to provide highquality, affordable public and private rental housing in station areas where there is a high demand for housing by young people, thereby promoting the revitalization of the local economy and resolving the housing shortage of young people.

The Dividing Highway

The site is located right next to the highway that divides this area into a bed town with green spaces in the west and a commercial area in the east. Furthermore, wide road in the East side is isolating the site

Typical Youth Housing

Interweaving Green

Interweaved

The commercial facilites and the green spaces are mixed creating a energetic space becoming a comfort space for the youths and the locals

The highway blocks the connection between the bed town and the site despite the high demand of openness between the site due to the shopping mall and green facilities on the West. The passage under highway exists but it is narrow and unpleasant. By making green highway over existing highway and interweaving it to the main crossroad where main commercial districts are located, a new center of the city that embraces both commercial and green spaces, is created under the youth housing.

03 BREATHING POLSKA

Sustainable Student Housing in Warsaw, Poland

EastWarsawStation BusStation

Train station, Greenery & Air quality

The site is located between the Kamionek Lake and urban greenery in the West and the heavy transportation infrastructure in the East. Upon research, first thing stood out was the bad air quality of Warsaw due to the coal use. We decided to make a building as a huge air purifier for the local community.

Urban Greenery

Rainwater Garden make possible the Continuous Green and Blue Axis of the City that proviedes urban greenery to residents and locals

BREATHING POLSKA l Renovation

Renovation Strategy

The competition asked for maximum preservation of the facade and layout of the building. The building is largely divided into three zones with different characteristics, and each area was renovated to suit the new program and maximize its potential. The factory façade extends in a harmonious way to the west where the building’s entrance and community facilities are located.

New roof system was installed to introduce sunlight and natural ventilation.

To maximize the height of the Old Factory, attic was demolished and new truss support was installed.

To preserve the brick wall and window of the Old Factory, Insulation was installed in the inside.

To preserve the window of the Old Factory and give a clean look, gypsum plaster was applied. Demolished

Passive & Active Design

One of the requirements of the competition was building without air conditioning. Through atrium and sliding doors, passive ventilation is maximized. The building captures air and purifies it through passive strategies. This provides cool and clean air not only to the residents but also the community members.
