The Do Book Co.
Catalogue 2023
Hello, and welcome to our Do Books catalogue.
Ten years on from our launch in 2013, we remain committed to publishing books by the world’s Doers, innovators and changemakers whose stories and ideas have inspired others to go and Do. To encourage action and positive change; to close the gap between where you are, and where you want to be. And we believe a small clever book can do just that.
Beautifully designed inside and out, each book is written by an expert who has taken to the stage at The DO Lectures, the magical event held each year in west Wales. Readers gain a deeper understanding of the topic and all the guidance, wisdom and motivation needed to make change happen. From life skills to smart working practices, with subjects covering design, business, wellbeing and sustainable living, these are books to inspire action!
We hope you like them.

NEW TITLES
Each of us is given the same number of hours every day, but some people make more things happen in the same time. Why is that? Well, they have learned an important, and yet mostly untaught, life skill. They have learned how to go from ‘talk’ to ‘action’. They have discovered the secret of ‘Doing’.
THIS BOOK IS ABOUT DISRUPTION
15 INTRODUCTION It’s about doing things differently. About having ideas that will change the world. That will at least change your world. It’s also about delivering those ideas. Having ideas is easy. The difficulty is making them work. The block can be confidence; befuddlement; inertia; money; knowing where to start. It’s easy to say but you just need to start. This book will help you create ideas and it will help you do things differently. Hopefully it will make you happy.
Words from Do Disrupt by Mark Shayler 213 REGENERATE For anything to last, it needs strong foundations. For a business to continue giving value to the world, we must explore its life-giving properties. In order to do so, we need to move beyond the idea of sustainability to the idea of regeneration. One way for business to do good is by regenerating our economy, our environment and our civilisation. The foundations of business now and in the future must be premised on regeneration, creating the conditions for all of life to thrive. For me, these foundations must include beauty, nature, biomimicry, design, values and metrics, and governance. Beauty The human spirit needs beauty. It enriches us and lifts us up. Beauty is a felt knowledge, connecting us spiritually, intellectually, sensually and ethically to every part of our lives. It expresses the idea that we can seek the good and manifest it in all that we create in this world. What have learned since writing Do Design is that the human spirit strives for more beauty. Beauty is good; it is a universal truth that beauty is a vital part of our Beautiful things are prepared with love and infused with optimism. They simply say life is, and can be, worthwhile. But how can beauty be a frame for business? Building foundations Hands, fingers, fingerprints. We all have our own unique conduit through which we connect to the physical world. feel the deepest connection to the earth when I’m walking beneath a rich, luscious woodland canopy and run my hand over the topography of tree bark. Or when I’m surfing in the ocean engulfed by a beautifully dynamic energy, stroking my hands through the cold, salty, swirling water. Two awe-inspiring spaces that exist on our incredible planet, connected to each other and to me, through my senses, through my hands. As a maker, taking a raw piece of timber through a creative process of physical change allows me to connect back to the earth, back to the ocean and back to myself. Through the act of making, we reawaken our hands and minds to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world around us. Making allows us to slow down, offers an opportunity to grow in confidence and can lead to a deeper sense of purpose. It is an instinctive and intrinsic part of all of us that many have lost touch with. We just need the support, encouragement and confidence to get started again. Start making again 275 EPILOGUE Deal with each day one day at a time. Don’t dwell on the past. Don’t live in the future. Keep working in the now. Head down. Working on the thing that matters to you. Stay in the now. Don’t spend your time moaning. Be thankful for each day. And enjoy the ride. It’s your ride. You are making the decisions. Get your mind looking for the positives and not the negatives. Surround yourself with people who take you up and not bring you down. Even the hardest days you will have, you will look back on with a smile. ENJOY THE RIDE, IT’S YOUR RIDE Do Purpose by David Hieatt 37 36 TIME TIME YOUR TIME IS LIMITED. REMEMBER THAT. Each day you’re given 86,400 seconds from the ‘Time Bank’. Everyone is given the same. There are no exceptions. Once you make your withdrawal, you’re free to spend it as you want. The ‘Time Bank’ won’t tell you how to spend it. Time poorly spent will not be replaced with more time. Time doesn’t do refunds. Time is your biggest gift. Indeed, it is more valuable than money as you can make more money, but not more time. But there is one simple truth: Your time is limited. And one day you will go to the bank and it won’t have any more for you. And it will be at that exact moment that you will know the answer to this simple question: Did I use my time well? Did I do what mattered most to me? Did I find my love? And did I pursue it like a wild hungry dog? Words from Do Purpose by David Hieatt 133 TEAM Tina Roth Eisenberg (better known as @swissmiss) gave a talk at Do USA. She talked a lot about building her amazing companies, and building the team, and the importance of fun. One of the slides that she put up read: Trust breeds magic. Yup, like Tina, believe in teams. I believe when a team comes together, there is very little that they can’t do. But some teams end up fighting each other like crazy, and subsequently, they go the way of the dinosaur. This fascinates me. So why do some teams come together, and others fall apart? I know, in order to build a business, have to build a team first. It is one of the key skills that an entrepreneur has to learn. Building a team isn’t complex. My learning is that a team is galvanised by two things. Firstly, they like to gather around the founding idea of the company. The more that idea is going to change things, the more people will want to gather around it. Purpose is important. The second thing teams love to gather around is a leader they trust. Trust is a multiplier of energy for a team. In order for the team to trust the leader, the leader has to show the team that he or she trusts them. Trust is a two-way street. But most companies are not set up to trust their people. In fact, they are set up to do the opposite. And yet trust is free. It breeds loyalty and passion and helps us all pull together. The magic of trust is that it helps a team to become a team.

The Book of Do
A manual for living
Edited by Miranda West
Can a book inspire action? Can it make us get up and move? Start something? Live differently?
The Do Book Company launched in 2013 with five concise guides designed to help creative entrepreneurs, makers and Doers work smarter and create positive change. Since then, the collection has grown to nearly 40 titles, with each book focusing on the ‘doing’ rather than the background theory.

how to live a fuller and more sustainable life, work smarter, or take a different path. Themed sections include Change, Ideas, Work, Team, Creativity, Sustainability and, of course, You. Within these pages you’ll find over 50 colour photographs, 30 illustrations, 8 lists, 6 recipes, 4 diary entries and hundreds of ideas that might just change your life.

Dan Kieran

Do Interesting Notice. Collect. Make. Russell Davies
Don’t try to be interesting. The secret is to ‘do’ interesting.
None of us were born interesting. It’s something that needs practice. It’s a set of habits, not a personality type. Do Interesting will encourage you to become curious and ask questions, even in the most frustrating and banal situations. It will give you tips and tools to help you pay attention and notice more; collect the obvious (images, quotes, facts) and the less obvious (metaphors, patterns, vibes). You will learn how to store and remember things, collide ideas together and multiply their value. Ultimately it will help you to come up with and share new ideas, tell better stories, and be more persuasive.
By turning the things you notice into something useful, everything will get that bit more interesting and you’ll learn something about yourself and what makes you tick. Your life and work will become more creative, more fulfilling, and more fun.
Russell Davies is a writer, strategist and organiser of the Interesting conference. For 25 years he has worked on digital strategy with Nike, Honda, Apple and the UK government. He has written articles for Wired and The Guardian, books about cafes and PowerPoint, and produced a programme for BBC Radio 4. He has won creative awards for design, advertising and blogging.

Do Hope
Why you should never give up.
Gail
Muller
Hope. We have all called on it. But what does it really mean, and why do we feel the need for it now, more than ever?
Gail Muller was told that she would be confined to a wheelchair by the age of 40 and to ‘give up hope’. She refused. Eventually (miraculously, even) she found a cure and went on to walk the Appalachian Trail.
Hope is not just a platitude, it’s a powerful and energising catalyst towards better days. But what happens if hope begins to fade how do we get it back?
In Do Hope, Gail will help you to understand the role of resilience, perseverance and self-worth; discover and develop tools to keep going; change perspective and draw comfort from things that actually make you happy.
Everyday life can be a challenge but no matter how unlikely, solutions will present themselves if we keep going even if they are not quite what we were expecting. What if the things that we thought were broken were really just fuel for our future?
Gail Muller is a writer, adventurer, speaker and educator. Her 2021 debut memoir, Unlost, sold 11k copies and reached #7 in the US Amazon Kindle chart. Her work is rooted in the strength of the human spirit.
Praise for Unlost: ‘Gail writes with humour, heart and passion.’

Path
A short story about reciprocity.
Louisa Thomsen Brits
A solitary figure walks along ancient pathways, between slender trees, across open hills. As the earth itself offers up support and reassurance, they walk through isolation and uncertainty towards an understanding that they are not alone, but part of the world. Interconnected and interdependent.
Path is a meditative journey written in lyrical prose, accompanied by evocative photography and original artworks, that captures the beauty and endurance of the natural landscape and the steady rhythm of walking. Now in paperback, this edition includes a new foreword from the author.
Positive and life-affirming, Path is an invitation to experience aliveness and moments of connection.
‘There is no destination, nothing to do, to change, or mend but wander with me to remember the earth’
Louisa Thomsen Brits lives close to the sea and hills of rural East Sussex, England. She is the bestselling author of The Book of Hygge and an outdoor swimmer.

Do Inhabit
Style your space for a creative and considered life.
Home is where we make space for our senses to come alive — and come to rest. Somewhere that is both restorative when we need to be, and inspiring when we need to do. Yet so often, we settle into a place without considering how the things around us affect our mood and ability to get things done.
Whether you live in a studio, large house or cosy cabin, Do Inhabit will help you to create a home (and work space) that invites connection and creativity. With room-by-room guides and an emphasis on nature as a source of inspiration, you will discover a few simple rules of interior design: the importance of evoking all five senses;
lessons from the Japanese art of forest bathing; and how to style your objects, hang art and lay a supper table.
Styling those places you inhabit is not about trends, it is about creating a space that is meaningful to you. Less house, more home.
Sue Fan and Danielle Quigley created Wild Habit, a lifestyle brand that takes inspiration from nature to design spaces, homeware and jewellery. They live on opposite coasts of the US.

Do Listen
Understand what’s really being said. Find a new way forward.
Bobette Buster
Why is it that we seem astonished, even grateful, when someone really hears us? When they lean in and give us their time and attention. How has this basic act become such a rare commodity? Has the one-way street of social media ‘broadcasting’ really marked the end of conversation and listening?
Do Listen is about rediscovering the lost art of listening. How to form deeper connections, generate moments of wonder, and achieve breakthroughs after a stand-off or stalemate.
Listening can take time. And it can be uncomfortable. Yet it is a skill that can be cultivated and mastered. It can also be a strategy. And sometimes, it will be the most important thing you ever do.
What if we each took five minutes a day to actively listen? How might our world change?
Bobette Buster is a writer, producer, and story consultant to major studios including Pixar, Disney, and Sony Animation and to leading production companies, as well as advertising and marketing agencies around the world. She lives in Los Angeles and is Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling at Northeastern University, Boston. She is also the author of Do Story.

Do Make
We are all makers. From brewing our morning coffee to folding a paper aeroplane, we find it satisfying to create something that didn’t exist before. And it isn’t just about the outcome. Making requires us to slow down and become absorbed in the process: an antidote to our fast-paced world.
James Otter is a wooden surfboard maker with a passion for craftsmanship — and the ocean. In Do Make, he invites us to rediscover the joy of making. By using our hands to transform natural materials into objects of beauty and utility, we reconnect with our creativity, our environment, and back to ourselves.

Do Pause
You are not a To Do list. Robert Poynton
Machines are designed to run constantly; people aren’t. Our coping mechanisms are meditation apps, weekend breaks and annual holidays, but things soon revert. To prosper, we need a more sustainable approach — an ability to pause.
Do Pause looks at the importance of this subtle yet powerful idea to communication, creativity, relationships — as well as our wellbeing and sanity. With practical tools to help you create new habits or make more significant lifestyle choices, you’ll discover ways to reset and regenerate; take back control of your time; and reconnect with other people — and yourself.

Do Agile Futureproof your mind. Stay grounded.
Tim Drake
When faced with ‘new’ and ‘different’, are we really open-minded — or wary and suspicious? In a world obsessed with the latest tech or trend, where groupthink dominates, it’s easy to close down our thinking; to mentally inhabit a space that is both comfortable and familiar. Yet what if we’ve become stuck in our ways? Or stopped having an opinion that was truly our own?
Do Agile is about resetting our minds and moving forward. Tim Drake shows us that to work effectively in any organisation — and in life in general, we require a mindset that is open, alert, engaged and positive. And importantly, aligned with our core principles. Learn to define your values as they change over time; find out how ‘giving back’
leads to a positive mindset; reignite a desire to learn; and retrain your mind to think more autonomously.
Today’s world requires a new type of toolkit. One that helps build mental resilience, a growth mindset, and a positive outlook. Once that’s in place, you can do practically anything.
Tim Drake is an author and keynote speaker to business audiences around Europe on motivation and unlocking potential. He has co-founded and run businesses, think tanks and charities.

Richard Hoare & Andrew Gummer
We negotiate constantly. In work, and in life. As we try to get the ‘best deal’, it can feel like a tug of war without the fun. Yet what if the process was more collaborative, and even laid the foundations for a strong future relationship?
In Do Deal, music lawyers Richard Hoare and Andrew Gummer share their refreshing approach to negotiation. Not only has it led to major record deals and enduring creative partnerships, but also a reputation for getting the deal done without leaving both parties bruised and battered. Now, they will help you to identify your natural negotiating style, develop strategies to deal with difficult situations (and people), build trust and think creatively to enrich deal terms.
With case studies from Glastonbury Festival and films such as True Grit, this is an essential read before any negotiation. Soon you’ll be approaching the bargaining table with new skills and greater confidence, regardless of the cards you’re holding. Deal?

Do Design
Why beauty is key to everything. Alan Moore
So much goes unnoticed. We multi-task, switch between screens, work faster. When was the last time you paused to consider a beautifully made object or stunning natural landscape? Yet this is when our spirits lift, our soul is restored.
Designer Alan Moore invites us to rethink not only what we produce — whether it’s a website, a handmade chair, or an entire business — but how and why. With examples from Apple, Blitz Motorcycles and more, we are encouraged to ask: is it useful and considered. Is it a thing of beauty?
Do Design will inspire you to raise the quality and craft of your work; consider the experience as much as the product; and adopt simplicity, utility and honesty as guiding principles.
We are creative beings. We love to make things. This book will inspire you to create better things for better reasons. Some say beauty is a luxury. But what if it is key to creating a better world for us all?
Alan Moore has designed and created everything from books to businesses. He has shared his knowledge in the form of board and advisory positions at major companies, and speaking and teaching in institutions including MIT and INSEAD.

Do Drama
How to stop watching TV. And start writing it.
Lucy Gannon
Have you ever said, ‘I’d love to write a script, but don’t know where to start’? Or watched the latest binge-worthy Netflix series and thought you could do better?
Do Drama explores the why and how of writing drama not as an instruction manual, but as a lively conversation with one of Britain’s most prolific scriptwriters. It provides an encouraging and inspiring roadmap for novice writers, giving practical guidance at every stage, from the first scene to the last, from finding an agent to the commissioning process, from developing characters to arriving on set.
Not everyone is a writer, and not every writer is a dramatist. But if you observe and detect the games people
play, if you have stories to tell, then maybe you have what it takes. It’s not about education, or class, or cleverness, it’s about your deep desire to tell stories, to explore emotions, finding the humour alongside the pathos. To bring your characters and your stories to life and maybe, viewed by millions.
Lucy Gannon wrote her first play age 39 and went on to become one of Britain’s most successful scriptwriters. She has won countless awards and in 1997 was appointed an MBE for Services to Television Drama.

Do Lead
Les McKeown
Real-world leadership is very different from all that the media would have us believe. Forget the dashing swashbuckler — effective leadership is typically understated. It’s the myriad small things that make the big things possible.
In Do Lead, Les McKeown demolishes the myths that have paralysed leadership in our modern era, then provides new, relevant tools for the job. You’ll discover that we can all lead. And what’s more, we should. Because effective leadership is goal- not people-oriented. It’s about the person with the right skills stepping forward. Find out the mindset required; the basic leadership toolkit; and techniques for dealing with the (inevitable) failures.

Do Present
How to give a talk and be heard. Mark Shayler
Getting our voices heard can be a nerve-wracking and overwhelming task — particularly in a world where everyone seems to have something to say. The ability to present our ideas with confidence is now a coveted skill. Yet on the stage or screen, we become this other person: less funny, less engaging, less human.
Mark Shayler draws on his own experience — from nervous speaker to charismatic compere — to guide you through the task of public speaking. He takes a deeper look at what’s holding you back, and will help you to find your voice and the confidence to share it; learn how to tell stories, not just share data; stand and move around the stage comfortably; and leave the audience
informed, entertained and uplifted. Giving a brilliant talk is not about following a method. It’s not about rules. It’s about understanding what you want the audience to think, feel and do afterwards. Ultimately, it’s about being more you.
Mark Shayler is one of Britain’s most charismatic keynote speakers. He has made a reputation by thinking on his feet and engaging audiences all over the globe. He is also the author of Do Disrupt.
‘Now more than ever, the world needs us to share the stories of who we are, and how we came to be. This book shows us how.’ — Joan Iyiola
Intellectual Property Rights
Intellectual property (IP) is fundamentally concerned with ideas and the expression of them whether in writing, film or other mediums. There is, as they say, a clue in the title, and the law has evolved to classify both the different assets which come under this umbrella term and the procedures in place for their protection.
Every business starts with an idea, but it is important to understand that it is not the idea that is protected but how it is articulated. In order for an idea to be protected it has to exist in one of the recognised formats in which intellectual property rights exist. Put another way, if you have a great idea it will only be protected if you don’t tell anyone (so no one can copy it) or you set it down in some recorded format. It follows that every business that articulates its idea owns IP or, put another way, rights in IP (IPR) – we will use these terms interchangeably. To some this statement is obvious, but to many starting out the importance and value of their ideas can be overlooked. So whether you are selling a brand-new product or simply your know-how, this is an important subject for all startups.
In essence IPR are the bricks and mortar of a brand or content led business. As creator, you have the right to stop
Building Your Team
For many entrepreneurs, starting out can be a solitary and scary experience. Whether you are a sole trader or in partnership with a couple of colleagues, it is unlikely that you will start your business with a strong supporting cast to whom you can turn. One of the tricks to being a successful startup is not only to recognise your limitations, but to pick and retain the right people.
In this chapter we are going to focus on a few of the legal aspects in the team-building process across the various stages, from hiring and firing to incentivising and managing. A word of caution: this area, like many others covered in Do Protect, is highly regulated. There is insufficient space to cover all aspects of employment law here but, as ever, the intention is to highlight the bigger issues and provide some guidance.
Types of Employment Relationship
Over the last decade or so, working patterns and practices in the UK have become increasingly diverse as both employers and workers seek greater flexibility.

Discover the basic tools and ingredients you need to get started; how to create and refresh your own sourdough starter; recipes for basic loaves, sourdough pizza, ciabatta, crumpets; and ideas for the bread you don’t devour immediately.
The result isn’t just fresh bread made
with your own hands and in your own time. It’s the chance to learn new skills, make something to share with family and friends, and change your world — one loaf at a time.
Andrew Whitley has ‘changed the way we think about bread’ (BBC Food and Farming award judges). His company Bread Matters run some of the most respected bread-making courses in the UK, popular with amateurs and professional cooks alike. In 2008, he co-founded the Real Bread Campaign to bring good bread to every neighbourhood in the UK. He lives in Scotland.

Do Wild Baking
Food, fire and good times. Tom Herbert
Cooking outdoors can be a challenge but the rewards are great: a hearty stew eaten under a starlit sky; grilled mackerel on the beach; ash-baked flatbreads plucked from the glowing embers, torn and shared.
Tom Herbert, a true advocate for this way of life, makes it easy. Armed with your hero ingredients, essential kit, and some kindling, you’ll be inspired to leave the kitchen for an outdoor adventure — even if it’s in the back garden or just a few miles from home.
In Do Wild Baking, over 50 delicious recipes — from Beer Bread to Hot Smoked Salmon — are grouped by location: Beach, Mountain, River and Forest. And if rain prevails, almost all of them can be recreated at home.
This is a call for a more relaxed, inclusive style of cooking and baking. It’s not just about delicious meals shared, but the conversations ignited, the senses reawakened, and above all, the memories created.
Tom Herbert is a fifth-generation baker and one half of Channel 4’s Fabulous Baker Brothers. He is co-founder of The Long Table — a community enterprise providing access to good food for anyone who needs it. He is also an ambassador for development charity Tearfund.
‘Tom makes cooking dinner outside on a fire, or baking amazing bread, seem natural, seamless and most of all easy.’
— Anna Jones, cook & author

Stay Curious
Ten years ago, Clare and David Hieatt started the Do Lectures with a simple aim: to gather together the world’s Doers — disruptors and innovators, experts and pioneers — to share their stories, and encourage others to go and Do.
Since that time, the Do Lectures has grown into a small but mighty institution, a unique gathering around ideas set over four days on their farm in West Wales. It has attracted worldclass speakers and inspired countless attendees to follow their passions.
Stay Curious is a celebration of the Do Lectures’ life-changing magic, full of personal insight and lessons learnt over the last decade — from curating the very best speakers, to styling and producing a beautifully
intimate event, and the importance of people, place and passion.
A 304-page hardback with full colour and black and white film photography, Stay Curious: How we created a worldclass event in a cowshed invites you to experience this special event and shares insight on how to curate and host your own beautiful gatherings.
Clare Hieatt is the co-founder of the Do Lectures and Hiut Denim. She started her working life in London as a copywriter. She moved back to Wales with her husband, David, 20 years ago, and together they have been concentrating on building businesses with a purpose and raising their two daughters.

The Path of a Doer
David Hieatt
This is a pocket guide to helping you achieve more. To help you understand the ebb and flow of making something happen.
For over a decade, David Hieatt has been listening to the world’s Doers share their inspiring stories on the Do Lectures stage. In doing so, he found a path that seemed common to all.
The Path of a Doer takes us through the simple steps that every person, every project, every business will probably encounter on the way to making stuff happen successfully. It will answer such questions as: should you set yourself an impossible deadline? When are you most likely to fail? Can daydreaming help you succeed?
No matter if you are a student or a CEO, this book is an essential read for anyone who wants to go from ‘talker’ to ‘doer’.
David Hieatt is the co-founder of Hiut Denim and The Do Lectures. He has spoken at Apple, Google and Red Bull, amongst others. He is also the author of Do Purpose and Do Open.
‘Reminiscent of the late great Paul Arden; succinct, direct and full of wisdom’
‘Keep on your desk as a ‘pick me up’ when you need inspiration.’

The Skimming Stone
A short story about courage.
Dominic Wilcox
I knew the moment had arrived at last. The stars had aligned. It was the perfect balance of stillness and silence.
If you had the chance to do the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, would you dare? Could you ignore the doubts and follow your heart — even at the risk of failure? It is only when we take the first step that things can truly change. And something new can begin.
The Skimming Stone is a beautifully illustrated short story about courage, self-belief and optimism.
Dominic Wilcox is a world-renowned designer and inventor who creates innovative and thought-provoking objects, such as the world’s first GPS shoes. He is the founder of Little Inventors with a mission to inspire children to become the creative thinkers and inventors of the future. His Little Inventors series of books is published by Collins.
‘Dominic Wilcox… challenges the real world to keep looking at itself with innocent eyes, wondering what else is possible.’ — Thomas Heatherwick
