Sometimes I feel unidentifiable. Everything I want to say has already been said. What I imagine and want to design has already been designed. What I think has been thought before. They all come with a small pang of sadness and disillusion.
Luckily - I think because of my training in a creative field - this has never been a long- term stumbling block, nor a substantially significant deterrent to trying over and over again
What is this need for originality?
And do we all have it? As it turns out, the answer is yes
From an evolutionary perspective, skills associated with averting danger and ensuring nourishment and the survival of species are at the top of the heap.
Creativity is such a skill. Genetically embedded in our species, so to speak. We don't all use it to a similar extent, but that does not mean we cannot train it. And there are so many reasons to do so! (continued on pg 5)
Read on to find out how to maximize your creative skills and use it for making a better life for yourself.
“Beloved imagination, what I most like in you is your unsparing quality.
Andre Breton, Surrealist Manifesto
When something forms in your mind, even if fed by pre-existing emotions, disparate thoughts, memories or simple hiccups of the brain, a "something" that has not been thought of before, or so you think, joy inevitably follows.
Imagination is a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy mind. Directly connected with happiness, it's a tool available to anyone who knows how to harness its power.
We all have a brain. We all think. We all can make something. It's as simple as that.
You may say, not all imagination is positive. True, but who says you need to dwell on the negative side of things?
And while not all of us burst at the seams with grand ideas, in this case, the smaller ones are as mighty.
Imagination is your friend. It will always be there for you. Spend the time to listen.
How creativity transforms you into someone better
Creativity contributes to brain health by maintaining brain plasticity. More than that. It is not only important to individual health but to the development of successful societies. It can eliminate prejudices and social disparity, and it can create eaningful human bonds
People are all unique, yet there are many commonalities to groups of people that relate to physical as well as mental traits. Some value their uniqueness more than others; the amount and kind of craving for attention also vary
often does not manifest itself by celebrating your own unique traits but, ironically, by copying habits, mannerisms, or lifestyles from others The row models, whichever you have This you can easily see in the celebrity-praising culture and how influencers sell, along with the larger celebrities, items that they value or promote to those who want to emulate them.
What we absorb through activities of the everyday is, in great measure, conducive to what we produce as human beings. Be that work, or conversations, or expressions of various emotions, or artistic endeavours. All these "things" represent our contribution to the world around us, and their perceived quality has a tremendous impact on our well-being In other words, if we feel satisfied by what we produce, we live a happier life

There are only a handful of ideas, truly core ideas, that can generate new forms
Everyone has them - but not everyone sees them - and they are all related to life around us
Uniqueness is a repeatable, systemic result that comes out of coincidences, conjuncture, the particularities of bias, and the boiling waters of the times and technology.
Your capacity to tap into these truths has tremendous power, and the best way to do it is by managing your "intake."
Neuroscience tells us that as we do not use part of our brain synapses, certain areas atrophy. Our brains do the work themselves via a process called synapse pruning. This physiological reality also supports the fact that the more routine-like your activities are, the less you stimulate your brain, letting it shrink Needless to say, this is a downward spiral that you don't want to get on The answer: expose yourself to more, defamiliarize yourself a little everyday to keep your brain plastic, adaptable, and always moving.
This is the lifestyle model of an input-output theory It relates to managing this relationship between our intake of information, experiences and emotions on one side and what we produce with it on the other.
So embrace this amazing truth that one of the most powerful resources to stay healthy and happy resides right there, inside yourself and tap into it
Have you ever wondered how some designers easily tip the balance their way and get frequent leads, and some pedal in the dust for most of the time?
In the labyrinth of decision-making, the quest for clients is exhilarating and daunting at the same time. From the initial client-designer encounter and a run through a well-curated portfolio to the final handshake sealing the deal, every step is spiced up with psychological nuances.
Whether the encounter begins with a compelling recommendation or not, once in front of the client, the power is yours. And so, a game of professional mating ensues.
Potential clients scrutinize the designer's work and personality, seeking alignment with their own aesthetic preferences and lifestyle aspirations. Beyond technical expertise, they gauge the intangible qualities that foster trust and rapport. They assess the designer's confidence in their craft and their ability to comprehend their vision and communicate effectively.
Studies reveal that interpersonal chemistry plays a pivotal role in client-designer relationships.
“By cultivating empathy, active listening, and authentic engagement, designers can forge deeper connections with potential clients,”
Neurologically, these connections are facilitated by the release of serotonin and dopamine the "bonding" chemicals that prove to your brain this person is IT. Later, as work commences, oxytocin mediates the growing attachment of the relationship when individuals feel understood and validated. Having that nourished is key to the relationship's and, ultimately, the project's success.
Understanding these dynamics can be a game-changer for designers seeking to attract clients.
By cultivating empathy, active listening, and authentic engagement, designers can forge deeper connections with potential clients, enhancing their likelihood of being hired.
But often forgotten, is the aspect of reciprocity, wrongfully reduced to a contractual number. As designers, we scrutinize the potential clients as well or if some of us we do not, we should. There is as much at stake for the designer, as it is for the client. And like any other relationship, unless it benefits both, it will not last

A first step in collecting is letting objects and ideas sip into your imaginary world. It will help you decide if they will travel back home with you and if you will cherish them forever.
The best way to start your treasure hunt is to meander and explore without directly chasing objects. When you come across a tea shop, an artisan woodworker crafting cultural objects, a chopstick shop, or the beautiful view of a water bridge in Zhujiajiao Water Town with its exquisitely carved columns and posterready hanging lanterns, take the time to judge the objects you see and imagine them in your home.
Place them with your mind on a shelf or on a sideboard while you let your imagination use the scented dried fruit from the market to make afterdinner tea for friends.
The art of incorporating travel memories into our living environment is a form of wellness design that fosters a healthier, happier existence.
Our environments are not just places to live but spaces that can continuously inspire, motivate, and uplift us, contributing significantly to our overall quality of life.
Shanghai, with its rich blend of heritage and modernity, offers endless possibilities to transform an everyday space into a source of enduring wellbeing and joy.
Whether recreating the peaceful ambience of a Buddhist temple or bringing back intricate artefacts from Yuyuang, integrating travel elements into home design encourages a lifestyle that values balance, peace, and aesthetic harmony.
