The shop was extensively damaged, and has been in the cordoned red zone area since the event. The staff stayed at the

Then to our complete surprise, they wouldn’t take any payment for their work – it was their way of helping out where they could. What great guys.” Casbolts are now operating from temporary premises at 401 Ferry Road, in the Powerboat centre. The phone number is still (03) 366 4401. They’re open for all sales and servicing, so if you’re in the Christchurch area and need

some Ducati parts, accessories, or service, roll on up to Casbolts. It’s only a small shop, but there’s a storage area just down the road so it’s business as usual. It will be quite some time before the renovations are completed at the Manchester Street shop, but we’ll make sure we keep you posted as to when the “old” shop reopens. We understand that Casbolts will take the opportunity to remodel the showroom with some new features, so make sure you watch this space for developments.

EDITOR’SSAY

Hi everyone. I’m back at the helm of the magazine again after a couple of years off. Things have changed a little, though I still have the 1098. It’s now wearing a lovely (loud) pair of Termignoni mufflers, and it has a little buddy in the garage—a shiny new Monster 696. Thanks to the Ducati Curve Tour I got the chance to try a few of the Ducati demo bikes when they were at Hamilton Motorcycle Centre for a week. I hadn’t ridden a Monster since an ill-fated six weeks in 2004 and I was keen to see how much different the revamped model was compared to old one, which hadn’t really changed since 1993. I was stunned. The little 696 was a marvel. It was so much fun, I didn’t even care that half the test ride was in pouring rain. A few days later I asked Heath to get me one.

easy to forget it’s supposed to be Ducati’s entry level model—with new riders, and new Ducatisti, in mind more so than me perhaps… Stu Jordan has a new bike too (see the photos in the centrespread), and no doubt plenty of others do too. If you’re one of the lucky ones send in some photos, and let us know what you think of your new baby—whether it’s brand spanking new, a classic from few decades ago, or something in between. We would love to see and hear about it.

The 1098 is still king of the garage, and gets the royal treatment as well Jamie as top priority for days out to the Coromandel, Taupo, or destinations further afield. The little Monster gets the shorter trips, whizzing around town, and even the occasional lap of Coromandel too. It’s such an accomplished little bike, so well sorted, and so nimble it’s often

Most of the movements in funds occurred in March and were to do with the Turismo with $15,000 transferred out of the savings account to meet the bulk of the costs. I hear that most of the Turismo riders enjoyed themselves immensely. Next time will be in the North Island – it will be different but in a good way! While I could not go on Turismo this year I did have a great ride to the AGM and back, 2,000-odd kms of good weather and great roads all the way. In the meantime—keep the rubber side down. spending quite some time in the departure lounge at Wellington airport on Saturday afternoon, 15-odd minutes before the flight was due to depart we were told that the flight was cancelled and would be rescheduled to 6.30am on Sunday. Great. So we duly turned up back at the airport at sparrow-fart on Sunday morning and away we went. It was a noneventful flight (thank goodness, I’m not that fussed about flying) and soon we were in the Hertz office at Melbourne airport. I was talking with the lady behind the counter and saw some guys in green out of the corner of my eye. I heard one of them asking for their car, and he spelt out his name….B-I-R-D… well, quicker than you can say “lean, mean and lime green” I handed rental proceedings over to Hamish and introduced myself to Paul Bird and Norman Burgess of the Kawasaki Racing Team. What great guys, and it goes to show what a small world it is…Norman said “I know someone from New Zealand who races bikes, from the Wairarapa”. “Oh?” I said, “who’s that?” “Doug Fairbrother” said Norman…well, you wouldn’t believe it—Hamish and I know Doug well and he’s actually my third cousin. (Side note: Doug has ridden and raced many Ducatis, and spent a few years over in Europe where he picked up his 851 from the factory.) We headed off to Phillip Island, which is a couple of hours south of Mel-

11 bourne. The Navman GPS we’d bought did a reasonably good job and we didn’t get lost (though at times there was some fairly intense discussion going on in the car between driver and passenger….!) We stopped off at the big Chadstone shopping centre on the way to have a look around…what a HUGE shopping mall. There’s obviously lots of money on that side of the ditch—the mall is overrun with shops such as Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, etc, etc. We picked up a few camera accessories at a good price which was a bonus. After a quick bite to eat after the shopping, we headed down to Banfeilds Motel in the village of Cowes, about 10 minutes drive from the track. Cowes is a beautiful seaside village, with lovely golden sand and blue sea. It’s a very popular tourist destination as there is a lot of wildlife on the Island…though we’ve never seen it because we spend each and every day at the track. Monday dawned with steady rain falling, but during the morning the sky slowly lightened up and although the first session started out wet, the rain soon stopped and by late morning the track was virtually dry. It was very cold though, with a strong wind right off the ice of the Antarctic. I got a big “hello” hug from Toshi (my favourite rider Noriyuki Haga’s right-hand man) and we had a good chat with him, like we do every year. Toshi and Nitro have been together for so many years now that

lane and into the garages...I felt really chuffed when some of the riders smiled and waved at me while I was taking the footage. It took me half a day to be able to pick out all the Superbike riders—there were a lot of new teams and riders, some with new livery. Although there is no official Ducati factory team (I must admit I don’t quite understand the ins and outs of that, but there you go….) there were several Ducati teams, including Jakub Smrz they’re synonymous together. However about half an hour later the Italian Infront organisers came to see us to say they’d heard the bad news, and invited us into their office to look on the internet…well, it was like a bad dream as by that time footage was starting to appear showing the horror and devastation. I must say that over the time we were there, I was very impressed by the coverage on the Australian news—they had almost 24 hour coverage on at least a couple of channels.

We went back into Melbourne on Thursday morning to pick up Peter, Jemma and Jamie, who were also on the same plane as Craig and Neil. After leaving the airport we headed to the centre of Melbourne to have a look through the Elizabeth Street bike shops. motel. He hadn’t arrived in Cowes till very late (he’d had to come through Christchurch) as he’d taken the scenic route from the airport to Phillip Island via Geelong. “Geelong?” I hear you say. Yes, that’s right Geelong… completely in the opposite direction to where he needed to go! All our mates had Club Superbike tickets, and for almost all of them it was their first time in the facility. They were blown away with the access to the paddock, the pit garage walks and the post race press conferences that Club Superbike gives. It’s wonderful to be able to wander around amongst the teams and riders in the paddock. The view from the roof of the pit garages is just great, you can see probably twothirds of the track from there. The sound of the bikes going past at close to 300kph is amazing. eral other nights—it’s extra special to be munching on your pizza or pasta and watching Max Biaggi and the Aprilia team being seated, or see Jakub Smrz stroll through to the bar, or have Michel Fabrizio and his team at the table next to yours. Troy and Sam Corser and their family were there most nights. Peter and Jemma both have lovely Aprilia jackets, and the night Max was there they spoke with him and got the jackets signed—they were chuffed!

Andrew had the idea of getting autographs on his t-shirt from the rider’s wives and girlfriends—after all, the wives and girlfriends are just as much an important part of the team as the riders and technicians. He was a bit shy about approaching the ladies, but I helped him by introducing him to Oli Haslam who started the ball rolling. Pippa (Eugene Laverty’s partner) said it was the first time that anyone had ever asked for her autograph, and Manuela (Marco Melandri’s partner) We all had breakfast at Mad Cowes on couldn’t believe Andrew wanted her to the waterfront, where we met up with sign and not Marco! She was so excited that she made us wait (speaking Andrew who was staying at another

15 in her broken English) while she ran to their garage and brought back posters of Marco for us all. How kind of her. Jamie took the opportunity to practice his Italian when speaking with Manuela. I finally got to meet the voices that I hear in my bedroom for six months of the year…Jonathan Green and Steve Martin who commentate for Sky Sport. Hamish and I tend to watch most of the races from the warmth and comfort of our bed—we tape it overnight on a Sunday, and watch on the Monday night. We’ve got a 42” plasma TV in the bedroom specifically for watching bike racing. I was really chuffed to meet Jonathan and Steve after all these years, and what great blokes they are too. We caught up with Aaron Slight who’d come over to spectate—it was like déjà vu for us to see a Castrol Honda with the number “111” out there racing!

ground John and his lovely partner Julia made it. John hadn’t been to Phillip Island before and was racing a BMW S 1000RR in the Pro Stock class of Australian Superbike. He finished a credible 3rd in his class in one of his races.

Many of the organizers and riders were very thoughtful and kind and asked us about our friends and family had fared. and gloves if he needed them. We love the Australian support races at Phillip Island just as much as the World races. The Australian championship is fought very fiercely, and we know some of the riders as they travel over here to compete in our championship. We caught up with Shawn Giles (who has just retired), Paul Gaston and Robbie Bugden—it was good to see them again. We breakfasted each day at Mad Cowes, and usually some of the Aussie guys would be there too, so I got to meet Troy Herfoss and Brodie Waters. They are both young men who are going to go a long way. It was also great to see Josh Waters (Brodie’s brother) racing for the Yoshimura World Superbike team. We were seated next to the Yoshimura PR lady in the media centre, she was very friendly and gave You will all know the results of the racing by now, so I won’t go into detail. 17 days later…can’t wait!! The Supersport race was a real doozie, with such a close finish for 1-23. Lynda Sam Lowe’s Parkalgar Honda team were staying at our motel. I think Sam would have to be a top contender for the Supersport title. He’s a very nice young man, as is Gino Rea on the Step Racing Honda. We chatted with both of them quite a bit during our time at the track—Gino would sometimes come up and sit by us in the media centre. Luca Scassa and Chaz Davies on the ParkinGO Yamahas will also go well this season I believe. Now, you may have noticed that Carlos Checa has a map of the world on his helmet. Well, if you look closely you’ll see that New Zealand is not there on the chin piece. I pointed this out (very politely of course) both to Carlos and his team. Carlos has promised to make sure that New Zealand appears on his next new helmet keep a watch on it! I was chuffed that he noticed my Ducati earrings while he was talking with me! All in all, we had such a good time, and being at the two test days was just amazing, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I never thought I’d have. It was great to have some of our mates over there with us, and to see them having a ball. We head to the USA on the 20th of May for the Salt Lake City round ten

PS: it was my hero Nitro Nori’s birthday on the Wednesday after the racing, so after the racing had finished on the Sunday I left my mate Toshi with a little Kiwi birthday present to give him on his birthday.

I am not really a “Bucket List” person but it was always on my mind the goal would be to get enough experience to compete at the Cemetery Circuit. Having done so many laps of that in my mind it was a dream come true to finally do it and even more special that I was able to do it on a Ducati. the unnerving experience of diving into corners (especially turns one and two), going up onto the centre of the road and then being chucked down the camber on the other side towards the opposite gutter – very scary until you get used to it. Not sure if I will do Wanganui again given the speed differential between me and the other racers but good to see how the pointy end of BEARS now includes racers from the pointy end of Superbike/F1, however I am looking forward to competing again in this year’s VMCC Winter Series. Please do come and say hello if you see me at a race meeting, the 749R is

a lovely bike and I am always happy to talk about it with like minded people who appreciate the breed. Photo Credits: Kevin Jordan, Nick Kaveney
