EDITOR’S Say

Yes, it is that time again when Santa shakes out his big red suit and gathers up the reindeer in preparation for delivering the presents to the good girls and boys around the world. Have you been good or bad? I am sure some of you will get some coal in the Christmas stocking. It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of the year, it just feels like yesterday that it was winter (living in Wellington that was last week). On the positive side the Metservice has indicated in their long range forecast for the summer months that (hopefully) we will get some settled weather, so it is a fairly good bet that road trips are on the cards these holidays. I am looking forward to it, family, friends, presents, good food, beaches with sand so hot you have to wear jandals down to the water line and eating ice cream from the dairy as quickly as possible before it melts all over your hands. We have a great issue for you all to read. Molly has written an article about his beloved 350 Desmo. Lynda and Hamish's next instalment of their Most Excellent USA adventure continues. I am also looking forward to 2013 to see what new bikes will be released and how Ducati will go in the MotoGP and Superbikes. Only one person sent in a Christmas photograph, so unfortunately were unable to have a montage of festive Ducatis. It would be greatly appreciated if you can send in some articles for the magazine. It can be about anything, it does not need to be about your Ducati trips through the Italy (although this would be nice), it can be about a cafes that you stopped at while out for a ride, motorcycle gear or accessories that you think are fantastic - anything. Well that is me done for the year, I will see you next year for more issues of the magazine. Merry Christmas and have a very Happy New Year.

Cheers Richard

PRESIDEnT’S PRaTTLE

Buon natale / merry Christmas to everyone. Where has the year gone eh? It only seems like a week or so I was at World Ducati Week at the Misano World Circuit rubbing shoulders (literally) with 65,000 other Ducatisti. What an event, What an experience. If you ever get that chance, or the opportunity even half pie arises, all I can say is "just do it!" The level of debt is worth it. :-) World Presidents Meeting contacts continue with Facebook, via a WPM page, but now Ducati have created a 'closed' presidents only DOC presidents page, which is now a direct discussion forum with Ducati and every president around the world. A fantastic initiative. There are a few things in the pipeline for Desmo Owners Clubs, so watch this space. National Ducati Rally 2013 Please make your bookings at the hotel. It won't cost a cent until you go there in March. But if we don't book, they will start to let the rooms out to other guests. I for one would prefer the entire hotel to be at NDR and not honeymooners etc... Turismo 2013 Please register, then you will get your list of hotels etc for the planning process. It's very simple. Again " just do it". This is not an advert, or in any way promoting another event...BUT...Taupo Circuit is having motorcycle track days the weekend of NDR. Do your own research and see if it could also be slotted in to your already busy itinerary. It could top off a fantastic weekend. On a very serious note...please ride safe. I do not want to represent the club as president for any funerals of members...not on my watch thanks. There have been enough motorcyclist killed in the past few months for a year at least. So please guys and gals, ride safe, enjoy your bike, our roads, and your family at Christmas. Have a great Christmas, a happy new year and I'll see some of you at the Boxing Day race meet at Wanganui. Arrivederci Gregorio.

SECRETaRY REPORT “mOLLY’S SaY” Entries for Turismo and NDR are coming in fast, so if you haven't done so already get yours in now. Turismo is of course very limited numbers so if you keen to go act now! Frustrating times for me, I hurt my back a couple of weeks back and there's no riding allowed until it heals. What a great incentive to follow the physio’s advice, do the exercises as prescribed, your back will heal and you'll be on the road again. Certainly been a shock realising the harsh realities of rush hour traffic in a car! Subscriptions are due at the end of January, and as per the last AGM in March it was agreed that the subscriptions need to increase to $70 to cover the cost of publishing the magazine. It was however decided that if you wished to receive the magazine in electronic form then the subscription will set at $40. This is just a pre warning that come the next magazine I will be knocking on your door. Remember get your entries to NDR and/or Turismo, they're going to be amazing events, I can't wait . Ciao Molly

I’ve owned and ridden a few Ducatis over the years and all seem to share the same quality – no matter how you intend to start the ride the bike always asks for more and before you know it you’re riding like its maker intended. This holds true more than most with my 350 Desmo. The first time I rode the bike was in the U.K, and it was just to get a MOT (WOF). I had never ridden the bike before and having fitted a new Conti muffler the jetting needed work, so I figured I’d take it easy and it was only six miles to the MOT man. Within a short space of time it was situation Ducati normal, fanging through the corners, out passing old ladies with the staccato bark of the Conti bouncing off the stone walls, rattling windows and waking the dead.

The bike was running lean and I used the choke to adjust the mixture accordingly, hardly a perfect first ride by any means. However on that first ride I knew the years of dreaming and plotting were worth it, I had my 350 Desmo! We all know that Taglioni was a genius, and that his Desmo design (although not entirely new at the time) was a revelation in racing capabilities of Ducati single cylinder engines. He had developed a rather complicated version in his early racers however, these required 3 cams. His later version of the Desmo system employed just one cam, this being on the SCD racer of 1967. The SCD was followed quickly in 1968 with the first road going Ducati with Desmo valve actuation, this being an update of the widecase Mark 3, now known as the Mark 3D – it being available as 250 & 350. Updates followed in 1971 with the ‘Silver Shotgun’, having a major restyle over the Mark 3D. Now with a single seat, new tank, side covers, a more effective Grimeca 7” drum and 35mm Marzocchi forks (to name but a few changes), the major change however was that a 450 version now joined the 250 & 350 versions of before. It was in 1973 that Leopoldo Tartarini of Italjet restyled the Desmo single into basically what you see before you now. Gone was the metal flake paintwork of the Silver Shotgun and in was yellow and black bodywork with restyled seat. 1974 saw the addition of a disc brake option with Ceriani forks and a Brembo

10

08 calliper and oddly a 239cc version for the French market. In true Italian style the 74 update saw the use of ‘modern age’ electronic ignition but held onto feeble 6V electrics. The dream I had had since 1988 was for a 350 with disc front end and nothing else would do. The 350 was considered (and not just in my head) to be the best of the bunch, more power than the 250 and smother than the 450. My dream had also been for an original bike, rather than a restored version – although I was prepared to give in to this point. It was 2003 when an opportunity presented itself while living in the UK. A 350 Desmo appeared on eBay, it was badly advertised, top dollar and was in Rome, but apart from that appeared to be exactly what I was after – original and unmolested. The Scottish genes kicked in however and I never put in a bid, but as it turned out neither did anyone else. I started communicating with this 350 Desmo owning Roman using an Italian work colleague as interpreter and struck a deal – the dream was almost realised, now all I had to do was collect it! A good English mate of mine and I have travelled a lot together to various motoring events and it took all of 2 minutes to convince him to take a couple of days off, hire a van and drive to Rome with me. Armed with a pocket full of Eu-

11 ros, we set off to collect my dream. We had 4 days, which meant driving in 14 hour stints, and sleeping in the van but that was no impediment to Desmo ownership. I had agreed to meet our Roman at the Furano Romano exit of the Italian motorway system, and I was to ring him when we were 30 minutes away. I spoke basically no Italian and he spoke no English however I managed to communicate by phone that our arrival was imminent and true to his word there he was. I assumed he would have brought the bike in the back of his van but no, instead we followed him to his house which would be what we’d like to imagine every Italian gentleman had – a garage full of Latin lovelies. I can’t remember how many bikes and cars he had but there was some real treasures (and on the flip side, there was also an ugly duckling TL600 which I worked out was his commuting hack). I never asked why he was selling his Desmo I can only assume it was the ‘too many toys’ story but it wouldn’t have been the bike that I would have sold first. My Desmo was original as I’d hoped, even down the ancient layers of chain lube and Italian dirt. It has that lovely patina and while some of the decals are missing from the seat unit and side covers, 38 years of use has not destroyed the tank decals. Ideally I’d like to pull it apart and repaint the frame along with the seat unit and side covers however how do you do those without making them look out of place with that gorgeous original tank? I do have a spare tank

12

Deck The HaLLs wiTh a 350 FRom moLLy

and have considered mounting the original tank on the wall and having a mint shiny restored bike in the garage but I think that’s missing the point. The 6V electrics aren’t the best and even though I’ve got the best 6V headlight bulb you can buy it’s still rubbish. Conversion to 12V is definitely something I would do, although I’m hoping the VTNZ will look kindly on it in the interim! A Conti pipe and bigger carb is the way to wake up a few ponies with these, and while I’ve done the pipe I haven’t considered updating the carb, it still wears the original VHB29. A later PHB30 or 32 would do the trick but for now I’ll leave it as it is. It’s hard to believe now that this all

13 happened for me in 2003 and yet since then the usual excuses of children, work, house renovations etc. etc. etc. mean the Desmo hasn’t yet had it’s day and it’s assault on NZ road is still in the early ‘planning’ phases. My mate was going to attend NDR in March this year and so I figured he could ride my DB1 and I could take the Desmo. I finished preparing it for its certification and it was all ready when my mate had to pull out, and so discretion being the better part of valour, I took the DB1. The Desmo is still sitting patiently in the garage (sometimes the lounge) waiting but the usual excuses continue. It will happen this year though, I need to get a lighting exemption as it’s got no indicators

14

Deck The HaLLs wiTh a 350 FRom moLLy

(never had) and it needs a brake certification by a bike shop but other than that my man at the VTNZ has assured me it will fly through (is that a Tui ad?) Whether I’m looking at it, riding it or working on it, it gives me a sense of satisfaction and pleasure and that’s all any of us want out of our bikes. A bike salesman once said to a mate buying a BMW, ‘whatever gives you a chubby mate’.

Funds are beginning to roll in for registrations for NDR and Turismo which is boosting the coffers. With a total balance of $11,362.60 in the two accounts the Club has sufficient to cover our normal expenses. For those about to renew memberships please make sure that you have the correct form for 2013 as subs are higher next year. Its getting towards that crazy time of year again and at this stage I just want to make it to Christmas and then relax for a couple of weeks. The recent spate of fatal crashes involving motorcyclists has been a bit sobering and it won’t put me off doing what I love – but take it easy over the holiday season and we will see you all in March at one or both of the planned events. In the meantime keep it upright. Nick Brandon

Hamish anD LynDa’s exceLLenT aDvenTuRe Monday 4th June We’d decided to stay an extra day in Sheboygan to have a look around the area. We breakfasted at the hotel as usual, then went to Z Spot café to get our flat white fix. Travis very kindly gave us a Z Spot t-shirt – that was very kind of him. We decided to head north along the peninsula along Lake Michigan and see where we ended up. We saw an unusual looking power plant a bit north of Sheboygan. I had a feeling it may have been a nuclear plant. We kept going north and at lunchtime we were at a lovely little town on the lakefront called Kewaunee. There was a lovely restaurant right on the waterfront, overlooking the harbor. We chose a table by the window and had a nice relaxing lunch. We decided to not head further north, but to try to photograph an Amish horse and cart if we could. We headed back through Green Bay and Osh Kosh, towards Portage. We found the horse and cart sign and soon enough a horse and cart came by. We slowed right down as we didn’t want to scare the horse, and the driver gave us a “thank you”

wave. Before long we saw several other horse/carts, and most of the drivers waved an acknowledgement at us. There was one farmer in a paddock with a two horse team ploughing a field, and several fields had ladies in long dresses and hats (some with young children) tending the crops. It seems like they would have a hard life, but I respect their choice and admire them for it. There are far worse things they could be doing. We got back to Sheboygan around 5.30pm and had dinner at Applebees (a chain restaurant a bit like Cobb and Co) before we headed back to the hotel. All in all we’d done just over 500 kms today. And sure enough, when I googled the power plant we’d seen, it was indeed a nuclear one. The first one we’d ever seen. Tuesday 5th June, and our last flat white for a while….we left the hotel after packing up and having breakfast, and had a final flat white at Z Sport café. We headed south through Milwaukee and called into Chicago to collect a couple of parts we’d ordered from a bike shop there. Chicago is a HUGE place, we couldn’t wait to leave. Our new GPS took us off the interstate for a while…we can’t understand why, as it wouldn’t have been quicker/faster/easier than staying on the interstate. However we followed the instructions and ended up on I65 heading towards Indianapolis. We had a very late lunch just outside Chicago, at an Arbys. They do a BLT sandwich, made with real bread. Usually they call a filled roll a “sandwich, and I was really missing a good old Kiwi sandwich with two pieces of bread. This BLT really hit the spot, it was lovely. Around 4.15pm we rang ahead to Lebanon, just out of Indianapolis, and booked a Comfort Inn for the night. Today we were in two states we’d never been to before: Illinois, and now Indiana. Tomorrow we head south, via Indianapolis and the Corvette Museum in Kentucky. (Continued on page 27)

(Continued from page 23) th

Wednesday 6 June We had a leisurely start to the day and left Lebanon around 9.00am, after breakfast at the hotel. It didn’t take long to get to Indianapolis, and from the outskirts we got to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway quickly. We drove up to the Hall of Fame Museum, and decided to take the bus ride around the track – only the oval unfortunately, not the MotoGP track. It was interesting though, to go around it. The size of the stands is just amazing – but then I guess it does take half a million people. We had a quick browse through the shop and bought a couple of souvenirs, then headed south on I-65. We slowed to a crawl before long, as there was roadworks and for some reason the traffic was stop/start. All the other roadworks we’d come across we hardly noticed, but for this lot where they were working on a bridge it took about 45 minutes before we were up to highway speeds again. We stopped at Scottsburg for lunch at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. It was a nice lunch, and we carried on towards Louisville, which is on the border of Indiana and Kentucky, straddling the Ohio River. So we entered another new state – Kentucky. Soon after Louisville I phoned ahead and booked a Comfort Inn at Bowling Green, which is where the Corvette factory/museum is located. We arrived there about 4pm and settled in to the hotel - still fine warm weather over here.

28

Hamish anD LynDa’s exceLLenT aDvenTuRe - conT

Thursday 7th June, another bright sunny warm day. We had our usual breakfast at the hotel, and left just after 7.30am to head to the Corvette Factory to do a tour. The tour started at 8.30am but even though we were very early, there were already quite a few people there waiting when we got there. They showed us a short safety video then about 20 of us followed the tour guide along the “green line” around the factory. There was another group of about 20 who followed about 10 minutes behind us. There is no photography allowed in the factory, so I can’t show you anything of the tour. It was very interesting, we enjoyed it a lot. Corvettes are beautiful cars. There was an Australian couple on our tour, the rest were from the US. Some had done the tour several times, many were Corvette owners. The tour took about an hour, after which we went to the souvenir shop. We only bought a few trinkets (I was thinking of space in the suitcases, or the lack of space to be more precise….). After the factory tour we went to the National Corvette Museum. We had a snack at the café. I decided to have a couple of scones (breakfast seemed a long time ago…) and chose blueberry and raspberry/white chocolate. I did think it seemed a strange flavor of scone, but went ahead anyway. When the lady asked me if I wanted icing I said “yes please” without wondering how icing would go on a scone. When the food arrived it became obvious that a scone in NZ is very different to a scone in the US. They were quite nice, but not like our scones. They were very flat, and very sweet. Ah well, they filled a hole. From there we bought a few things at the souvenir shop, then headed south on I-65, towards Alabama. We were soon in Tennessee, another new state for us. We stopped at an Arby’s half way through Tennessee and had a BLT sandwich for lunch. Before long we arrived in Alabama, yet another new state. The “welcome center” rest area had some good brochures, and very clean toilets. There was a Saturn rocket at the rest area – they had been developed in Alabama (I didn’t know that). We arrived at the hotel around 5pm and settled in. Tomorrow we visit the Barber Museum – can’t wait. Friday 8th June

29 We had a leisurely start to Friday as the Barber museum doesn’t open until 10am. We breakfasted at the hotel and drove to the museum, arriving there around 9.45am. The museum overlooks the race track, and there were some Porsches driving around so we had a look at those for a few minutes. We went into the museum and asked for Brian (we’d very kindly been given an introduction to one of the top guys at Barber, thank you very much Tim). Brian took us up to Level 5 and we wended our way back down to ground. Well, when I say wended, we were there for five hours. What a fantastic place. They have some 700 bikes on display, all in mint condition. And they have almost the same number either under restoration, or restored and sitting out the back for when they change things around. Brian left us with Jack who showed us around the first few floors. I was just speechless – there were bikes of all ages, shapes and sizes. Some of the old ones I’d never heard of, let alone seen. They all had an information sheet alongside them so you knew what it was that you were looking at. We were immediately drawn to the Britten, it looked so beautiful sitting there in the stunning pink and blue colour scheme.
