EDITOR’S Say

Yes, Christmas has come and gone, Viva 2013. The good weather has finally arrived, long may it last, especially for the NDR and Turismo. We have a great issue for you all to read. Steve has written an article about his Diavel and Nigel’s last ride of the holidays. Lynda and Hamish's next and final instalment of their Most Excellent USA adventure will continue in the next issue. The 2013 session has now started, what to see, what to see, how will the new bikes and riders stack up in the MotoGP and Superbikes and local racing. It would be greatly appreciated if you can send in some articles for the magazine. It can be about anything, local racing, first Ducati bike, trips across the country or trip through the Italy. It can be about great cafes that you stopped at while out for a ride, motorcycle gear or accessories that you think are fantastic anything. Well that is me done for this issue. I hope to see you all at the NDR, safe riding and have a great summer. Cheers Richard

DOCNZ AGM The Annual General Meeting for Ducati Owners Club of New Zealand will be held at 4pm, 16th March 2013 at the NDR venue – Bayview, Wairakei Resort The following committee positions are open to nominations from now:

President Secretary Treasurer Editor Webmaster Those members who are financial are eligible to vote but everyone can join in on discussions and raise any new business. We hope to see you there

PRESIDEnT’S PRaTTLE

Ciao everybody. Plans are progressing for NDR, at the stage everything is on track and things are going really well. We now have sponsorship from the Italian beer company Peroni, so Friday night is going to be a great starter to the event with Peroni and Pizza night. This event should be the biggest national Ducati Rally New Zealand has seen, so make sure you tell all your mates to tell all their friends! Hell tell everybody!!! We want to see as many bikes and people as we can. We have some very exotic bikes and machinery turning up at the rally and we are going to be fortunate and so lucky to be able to see some of these bikes that maybe we haven't seen in such a long time. The bike show alone will be awesome! The annual general meeting for the club will also be held at National Ducati Rally and I've got a couple of proposals for this year. One will be that the start of the financial year for the club begins on 31st of March. This will eliminate the fact that at the time of our rally, and AGM, members subscriptions have actually expired and are due. The second is the position of president, I am more than happy to continue, I love the position. I also enjoy running the events and seeing people attend them. It would be great to see more people turn up. I am more than willing to be president again this year, so I’ll be keeping my hand up and head high hoping I get your votes. See you all at in NDR Arrivederci Greg

The countdown to NDR is on! By the time you read this it will be time to warm your tyres! If you haven't booked there's probably still time to squeeze in so don't assume there's no spots left - get in contact with me! secretary@docnz.co.nz Memberships are also now due and we've sent an email to everyone that wasn't a financial member at the time. Get your form to me and I'll renew you for another year. It's simple and so worth the investment as anyone who has been to a recent NDR or Turismo can attest. I have also enclosed a membership form with the magazine for those that aren't financial yet. The Ducati Owners Club is a great group of like minded souls so lets build on the great foundation we have - if you know of anyone that owns (or appreciates) a Ducati then pass them a form or pass them onto me and I'll do the rest. At NDR you'll get your chance to nominate someone (even yourself) to the committee as the AGM will be on Saturday 16th. If any of the roles of President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor or Webmaster take your fancy then get your nomination in before the event. Nick is standing down as Treasurer (he will be missed!), personally I'd love to stay on as Secretary but if anyone else wants to give it a go then get the nomination in. Nominations at the AGM itself are fine too. Also something worth considering for the AGM is the financial year of the club. Currently memberships expire at 31 January but these take time to renew and we have a dramatic decline in members for a couple of months. Given that voting rights rely on a member being financial perhaps this is an area we can tidy up by moving the financial year to end of March or later? On a personal note, a Mike Hailwood Replica Mille has entered my life. It has just arrived but I'm working away from home this week so haven't had a chance to ride it yet! Get your membership renewals in and I'm hoping to see as many of you at NDR as possible! Ciao Molly (Brent)

PainT iT BLack...anD RED, anD wHITE

I bought my Diavel in mid-2011 and have loved every minute riding it. Ducati produced a great bike but I always thought it would look better with some mods and a paint job more in keeping with the design intent of the bike. So in 2012 I started thinking about the look. As a "Standard Red", it was a bit of a blank canvas, so I had plenty to work with. I wanted the red frame to stand out and a design that was more aggressive. I decided at the start to replace all the OEM bodywork, so if I really got it wrong I could always return it to standard. Not having an artistic bone in my body, I took to scouring the web looking at designs and go-faster bits, which was a lot of fun and it wasn’t long before I had a basic concept – replace the body work with carbon; find the right paint design, and fit a pipe that gave me the sound, performance and look to match. The carbon and exhaust would also save some weight - just pick up the OEM cans on the Diavel and you’ll see what I mean, it's like an anchor hanging off the side of the bike!

By STEve FERGUSOn

9

I also use the bike for the odd long distance ride as well, so first I decided to figure out a luggage system that wouldn’t detract from the look of the bike. Stew Jordan put me on to Kriega luggage, which mounts to the underside of the seat and doesn’t need a frame, so I could keep the clean look…step 1 sorted! After playing with a seemingly infinite number of colour schemes and designs, and looking at what other guys had done, I came up with...nothing! It doesn’t help that I can’t draw a stickman let alone a decent paint design for a bike. But every time I threw away another design I’d keep coming back to the Ducati Corse colour scheme of the 1198R and Muiltstrada Pikes Peak designs, which I'd always liked. So I talked to Pradeep at Clean Motorcycles in Wellington, who'd put clear skins on the original bodywork and asked him if he could design skins in a Corse paint job for the bike. He said yes, but thought it needed to be painted to do it justice.

10

PainT iT BLack...anD RED, anD wHITE = ConT

By the middle of the year I had the bike stripped, all the carbon goodies sourced from Illmberger carbon in Germany. I killed a small forest sketching out versions of the Pikes Peak design and after making some final paper templates gave the bike to Predeep to work his magic. In a fit of artistic brilliance/ madness (circle one) I thought I'd go with a lowsheen look. But after seeing the result, urghhh, it was way too dull. So back to the drawing board and Pradeep to add the gloss...whew, that’s better. One of the trickier pieces of the paint job was getting the reverse relief showing the "Ducati" emblem from the carbon underneath the paint on the tank, but it came off well.

14

PainT iT BLack...anD RED, anD wHITE = ConT

Okay, paint job done and glossed the carbon, on to the pipes. I wanted to show off the back wheel. To me the aftermarket Termi’s just don’t do the job so back to the interweb. It came down to the HP Corse and Remus systems, and by luck I was on business in San Fran and managed to hook up with the US Remus distributor based there and was sold on the pipe once I saw it in the flesh. They were super-helpful. Remus also makes the OEM pipes so the aftermarket unit is a just plug’n’play. It took all of 20 minutes to fit the pipe and she really growls. It came with a db killer, but so far I've just run it in its “raw state”. (Travel tip - exhaust units can be packed into suitcases and they don't show as a bomb coming through the customs scanner!) So by late 2012 summer's here and the paint job's done - a mix of Ducati red, White, Black and clear carbon, the pipe’s on, a shorty-smoked screen fitted and black frame plugs have finished off the job. I'm really happy with the look, it's original, but not OTT and it also came in around what I budgeted.

15 In the New Year I’ll get clear skins fitted, but for now I just want to ride her. Thanks to Pradeep at Clean Motorcycles - we both went on a bit of an artistic adventure but the end result was worth it. Steve Parts used on build: Carbon (Ilmberger, Germany) - Tank cover - Side covers - Air duct covers - Front guard - Rear hugger (short) - Seat cover - Headlight cover - Instrument surround (tank) Heat guard Other - Remus titanium can & link pipe - Black frame plugs - Smoked screen (short) - Kriega luggage

I am now really looking forward to both NDR and Turismo which now just over a month away. With entry fees for both events flowing into the bank account plus membership subs the Club’s coffers are now looking fairly healthy. We are making an investment in a Ducati branded ezy-up with assistance from NFI which will provide our events with an easily identified contact point. I will be stepping down as treasurer at the AGM which will be part of NDR so this very prestigious position will be available to anyone with an interest in contributing to the Club. I hope to see you all in March - in the meantime keep it upright. Nick Brandon

LaST RIDE OF THE HOLIDayS Sunday 6th January and it’s the last day of the Xmas/New Year holidays before heading back to work. So what better way to spend it that having a spirited ride from Hastings up SH2 to Café 287 just short of Wairoa where we planned to stop for a bite to eat before heading home again. I had done this ride a week earlier when seeing off the Boxing Day crowd who were on their way to Rotorua after a trip to Wanganui to meet up followed by a few days meandering around the central North Island before heading our own ways. The gathering in Wanganui was tinged with sadness as we were missing one of the crew tragically taken out by a tin top while on a day ride from Tauranga with the Tarata Street squadron in November. I had only met John on 4 occasions and they were always based around the Wanganui boxing-day pilgrimage. A great guy, excellent navigator and someone I was privileged to have met and call a friend. Needless to say without John’s navigational skills the crew of Colin (DRZ450), Ivan

(748R), Des (Gladioli Gladius), Claire (851) and myself (S2R) had difficulty in deciding where to go and how to get there. We eventually head out over Durie Hill and along No2 line to Kuangaroa Road / Mangitipona Road to Hunterville.

All the right flavours for biking with little traffic and plenty of bends; although the fallen willow tree we had to find our way through was a bit of a surprise. From Hunterville we headed up SH1 to Vinegar Hill and down to Ashurst. Colin can’t remember if we are going this way or via Kimbolton causing some panic (Continued on page 27)

braking and an overshoot or two as we take the earlier turn off at the last second. I have ridden with Colin before so am prepared for these navigationally challenging moments. The road here is a little busier and quite boring on the straight bits at the end into Ashurst. We have a comrade in arms to visit and a cup of tea to drown after viewing Geoff’s project Guzzi in the garage; this one is having Tesi type swing arm installed in the front. I know Guzzi people are different, but this is very different. We head off through the Manawatu Gorge to check out the new earthworks, turn right at Woodville, have lunch I Pahiatua then gas up in Ekatahuna. By now you will realise we don’t do big distances in one go. On to Masterton before peeling off left to Castlepoint. This road is in excellent condition and spurs us on, however the weather is a little against us with lots of dampness in the air. We park up at the Whakataki Hotel; bike and biker friendly. The ride back out is faster as the roads are drier. We gas up at Masterton before backtracking a little towards Castlepoint then heading left up SH52. This is motorcycling heaven and has been listed amongst the best rides in NZ although judging by the grass growing up through some of the cracks in the road not as often used as it should be. We stop at Pongaroa for lunch and the skies open, we check to see if the hotel has rooms; it only has communal back packing facilities so we decide to move on the rain having lifted somewhat, we are 3 km out of town and the roads are dry again.

28

LaST RIDE OF THE HOLIDayS - conT

A spirited post lunch ride to Waipukurau ensues, followed by a short SH2 transit section to Waipawa to gas up before heading to the Patangata pub and Middle Road beyond, only the lead two of Ivan and Des miss the hoarding size sign saying “Patangata Pub “ to the left and take a detour to Puorere Beach instead. By the time they get to the pub the publican and all the locals have heard of their navigational misdeeds and they are forced to buy a round. From the pub we head up Middle Road which is now in much better condition than it was a couple years ago when Hawkes Bay was inundated for a couple of weeks. It is also a Road I far prefer doing south to north rather than the other way around though I can’t figure out why. This is followed by a stop at Maison Mayfair for a knock up BBQ and a good nights kip. Claire and I plan on having a couple of days at home before catching up with the crew for New Years in Rotorua, however next day I decide to join the crew for the first leg of the journey to Rotorua from Hastings to Wairoa. This is one of my favourite stretches of road on the S2R and enjoyed to the max once again. Shortly before Café 287 Colin’s number plate parts company with his bike; I stop to collect it. You know those moments when you arrive at a pub or Café sometime after the first of the gang get there – the sort of reception Ivan and Des got the day before at Patangata. Well Colin and Des thought they were in for one of those moments until I handed Colin his number plate. Unfortunately humble pie was not on the menu. Which brings us back to the beginning and Claire and I are planning a repeat ride up to Café 287. We get to Bayview to gas up only to find the 851’s gas cap keys are still sitting on the deck at home. We go home and elect to go to Waipawa to have lunch at the Misty River Café – biker friendly, great double shot flat whites and excellent food. We finish off the holidays with a repeat run up Middle Road. Nigel
