PAPER CRAFT
Decorative book binding Create a link-stitched journal with this step-by-step guide
T Fran McKay A day make
he ancient craft of book binding is an art that looks pretty spectacular but actually is not very difficult to do. With a little practice it is easy to get a fantastic spine on a notebook or journal that will not only look impressive, but is functional too. If you are on the lookout for a fun craft project or a quick way of making a personal gift for that special stationery or book lover, this could be the perfect project for you.
Now it’s time to form the front and back covers. Cut two pieces from the book board and trim to the same size as the folded signatures. Choose a decorative paper from a Santoro Paper Pack for the outside of the cover and trim to size, leaving at least 15mm around each edge. The decorative paper for the insides, meanwhile, should be trimmed to the same size of the board minus 5mm all the way round.
Creating a text block and the book’s covers Separate the paper for the internal pages into groups of 4-6 pages each. Using a bone folder, fold each group of pages neatly in half to form the signatures. Make 12 of these for the sewing pattern shown.
Apply an even layer of Anita's Tacky Glue to one side of the cover board and then firmly press it into the centre of one of the outside papers. Turn it over and, working from the centre outwards, smooth out any bumps. Repeat for the other board and allow to dry.

etting value for money is important when buying craft supplies and, in my opinion, you certainly get that with the Creativity Essentials stamp sets. There are lots of pieces in each pack, making them really versatile. Create a complete scene or add a finishing touch using smaller elements. Here, I used part of a larger image with basic masking techniques to create different effects with the same stamp. I’ve kept the cards simple, using stamps and dyes with a limited colour palette to create elegant woodland designs.
'You are the greatest' card Create this setting with the fantastic background stamp from the meadow clear stamp set to frame the central image. Follow the ‘How to’ steps on the right, using a circular mask and inking with Artiste Pigment Ink in Dark Yellow, Dark Orange and Chocolate. Add a die-cut stag and then stamp and heat emboss a greeting using Folk Floral banners stamps. Curve the banner using 3D foam squares in the middle to add a little shape and depth. Trim and mat on a card blank made from brown cardstock.
