OUR
PRINCIPLES Emergency Response
We provide medical care in times of crisis with a long-term vision of rehabilitation and sustainability.
Improving access to healthcare for migrant populations
We advocate on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable populations to ensure and protect their access to healthcare.
Capacity building for healthcare personnel
We actively train local health workers and medical staff to facilitate sustainable improvements to local care.
Building partnerships with local NGOs
We believe that partnering with local organizations is the most effective way to understand the needs of a community and best serve the local population. These partnerships allow us to provide culturally appropriate responses to health emergencies and help build sustainable local healthcare services.

PRIORITY INITIATIVES:
SYRIA & MALI SYRIA
© MdM
The humanitarian crisis began in 2011, and violence against the Syrian people continues to escalate. Living in danger and fear, Syrians are fleeing to neighboring countries to seek refuge and medical services. Doctors of the World has been active in Jordan and Lebanon since the beginning of 2012, providing care for Syrian refugees. The teams on the ground deliver primary and mental healthcare services, medicine, equipment, hygiene kits, and first aid training. MALI
In 2012, Mali experienced a severe food crisis, collapse of the national health system, and a coup d’état. Today, the humanitarian situation is even worst. The alarming rates of malnutrition are threatening the population. The northern half of the country is facing a major health crisis. Despite security concerns, Doctors of the World remains active and has set up a clinic to provide primary health care and nutritional support to the displaced population.

“None of the people have work, they have no money, no home and they feel abandoned. The camps are horrible, overcrowded; the stagnant water lying around attracts mosquitoes. People want to leave but they have nowhere to go. They don’t know how long they will be there so they have started to set up small businesses. Little by little the tents are replaced by more solid wooden and sheet metal structures.” Eddy, coordinator at internally displaced persons camp
IMPACT:
HAITI 1
Two days after the earthquake, mobile clinics were set up in Port-au-Prince to provide first aid and surgical operations to those in need.
2
Over the course of six months, Doctors of the World opened ten clinics in Port-au-Prince. More than 9,000 consultations were conducted each week, primarily treating respiratory infections, diarrhea, malaria and sexually transmitted infections.
3
Working with the Ministry of Health, Doctors of the World sought to integrate free healthcare services into the national healthcare system.
4
The cholera epidemic has claimed 4,000 lives since the 2010 earthquake, posing continued risk to the local population. Doctors of the World provided treatment and prevention services to stop the epidemic from spreading.

The devastating earth-quake in January 2010 left 250,000 dead, 300,000 injured and 1.3 million homeless. Doctors of the World was there at the onset and continued to provide medical care to fight the cholera epidemic.

PROJECT IN
NEW YORK
1.5M
Rockaways Free Clinic In October 2012, Superstorm Sandy hit the Rockaways in Queens, New York, displacing doctors, closing pharmacies and leaving hundreds of local residents without access to basic healthcare services or medication. In response to this shortage of services, Doctors of the World USA launched the Treat, Connect and Restore Initiative, actively engaged local volunteers and community organizations to identify those in need and bring doctors to their homes. In the process of coordinating home visits utilizing volunteer doctors, it became starkly apparent that the need for accessible healthcare services predated Superstorm Sandy. Doctors of the World USA began planning for a long term commitment to the community. To help address the lack of access to medical care in the Rockaways, Doctors of the World USA opened its first domestic clinic in October 2013.
Doctors of the World USA is committed to:
uninsured people in 2008
• Providing primary care services to the uninsured and undocumented without regard for one’s ability to pay; • Connecting clients with ancillary services including case management and mental health services offered on-site by partner providers; • Ensuring all services are provided in a locally appropriate manner by regularly soliciting feedback and oversight from community leaders and clients; • Continuing to address the larger needs of the Rockaways community through data sharing, stakeholder coordination and advocacy. Doctors of the World USA is committed to providing care in the Rockaways community for as long as our services are necessary and welcome. For more information about the clinic, including hours and directions, please contact: 718-634-4941.
