Editorial
Swiss films and their audiences are best characterized by their sheer diversity. The most varied movies succeed in establishing for themselves a market in Switzerland and each film finds its own, specific public. Not least because of their multi-cultural and multi-lingual background, the Swiss are a highly interesting target-audience for both the national and international film business. Seeking entertainment on one hand and, at the same time, demanding challenging, socially critical cinema, these versatile and sophisticated moviegoers inspire the Swiss film market with their manifold interests. In regard to both production and exploitation, Switzerland offers great potential for a wide range of film, from mainstream and classical arthouse, to ambitious documentaries. According to the European Audiovisual Observatory, Switzerland has the highest market share of non-national European films. For the past ten years, a new generation of Swiss filmmakers has developed a multifaceted cinema which focuses on the concerns of its audience. The Swiss documentary film, which has achieved significant commercial success in 2008 on both national and international levels, serves as an example of this cinematic approach. Without doubt, Switzerland holds a unique position in Europe with its wide variety of films and its cineastes strive to maintain this dynamic tradition with great enthusiasm. Nicolas Bideau Head of Film Federal Office of Culture
Swiss films can be seen on screens all over the world. Film festivals from Buenos Aires to Shanghai and from Sydney to Helsinki are presenting the most recent fiction, documentary, animation and short film productions from Switzerland. Many films appear in cinemas throughout Europe, America and Asia or are broadcast on television in a host of countries. Works by famous Swiss filmmakers are showcased in retrospectives at festivals and in film museums – which has already been the case in Paris for the maestro Alain Tanner and in Rotterdam for the documentary filmmaker Peter Liechti in 2009. Serving as the Swiss filmmakers’ partner, the promotion agency SWISS FILMS backs this diversity of initiatives, supporting them financially and establishing international contacts with festivals, world sales, distribution firms and television stations. SWISS FILMS provides international professionals in the film industry with information about new films and trends in Switzerland. The promotion agency fosters the participation of Swiss films at festivals with subsidies and reinforces the chances of an international release with direct support to foreign distribution firms. SWISS FILMS is, with its team in Zurich and Geneva, as well as with its website www.swissfilms.ch, your link to Swiss films. Micha Schiwow Director SWISS FILMS

The film promotion agency SWISS FILMS established as a foundation in 2007 is a result of a merger between the Swiss Film Center, the Film Department of Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Short Film Agency. SWISS FILMS fosters the international distribution and promotion of current, independent film productions, as well as Switzerland’s audiovisual tradition. In addition, SWISS FILMS supports the presence of Swiss film productions at international festivals and markets and, as of 2007, also assists their distribution in cinemas abroad. The events organised by SWISS FILMS for home and abroad aid in increasing the public’s awareness of the national film scene, which has experienced an upswing for the past several years. For more information, please refer to www.swissfilms.ch.
Swiss Film Prize QUARTZ 2009 Eleven years after its start in 1998, the Swiss Film Prize presents attractive innovations: The Swiss Film Prize QUARTZ was awarded for the first time at a gala event in the KKL Lucerne. The organisers of this festive event for Swiss film productions – the Federal Office of Culture (SFOC), SRG SSR idée suisse and SWISS FILMS – aim to honour high-quality films and outstanding achievements by filmmakers and place Swiss filmmaking in the limelight. The nominations for this year’s Swiss Film Prize QUARTZ were made by a committee appointed by the Federal Office of Culture. The committee is comprised of members of the Swiss Film Academy, which was founded in 2008. The monetary prizes presented to the nominees and nominated films amount to a total of 425,000 Swiss Francs. Among the nominees the jury selected the “Best Fiction Film”, “Best Documentary Film”, “Best Short Film”, “Best Animation Film”, “Best Screenplay”, “Best Actress”, “Best Actor”, “Best Emerging Actor or Actress” and “Special Jury Prize”. The “Best Film Score” QUARTZ was awarded for the first time in 2009. Excerpts of the award ceremony were broadcast by SRG SSR idée suisse (SF zwei, TSR 1 and TSI 1) in the regional languages. For more information on the Swiss Film Prize, please visit www.swissfilmprize.ch as well as www.swissfilms.ch (film prize). 2009 Awards: “Home” by Ursula Meier (Best Fiction Film) – “No More Smoke Signals” by Fanny Bräuning (Best Documentary Film) – “Un día y nada” by Lorenz Merz (Best Short Film) – “Tôt ou tard” by Jadwiga Kowalska (Best Animation Film) – Ursula Meier & Antoine Jaccoud for the screenplay of “Home” (Best Screenplay) – Marcel Vaid for the film score of “Zara” by Ayten Mutlu Saray (Best Film Score) – Celine Bolomey in “Du bruit dans la tête” by Vincent Pluss (Best Actress) – Dominique Jann in “Luftbusiness” by Dominique de Rivaz (Best Actor) – Kacey Mottet Klein in “Home” by Ursula Meier (Best Emerging Actor) – Danilo Catti for his artistic and political engagement in “Giù le mani” (Special Jury Prize).

It’s a really straightforward thing to shoot a film in Switzerland! It’s easy to do so because all the conditions have been put in place to optimize audiovisual projects, including both the creative and economic aspects. Switzerland offers a large variety of natural settings and architectural works dating from different epochs. The climate ranges from the polar cold of the everlasting snows in the Alps to the heady Mediterranean temperatures in the southern regions of the country. This diversity is concentrated within a small land mass traversed by a rapid-access road and rail communications networks. Add to this the attractive Euro-Swiss Franc exchange rate, the flexibility of working conditions and the efficiency of the service companies. Switzerland is an open-air studio that offers you numerous economic advantages.

FILMING IN SWITZERLAND
Coproductions with Switzerland:
To be eligible for public funding, a film coproduced between Switzerland and another country must be officially recognized as a Swiss film. The following rules apply:
FICTION Nordwand (2008) Germany/Austria/Switzerland
• An independent Swiss film producer must be chosen as a partner, who will then apply for public funds.
Director : Philipp Stölzl Cast : Benno Fürmann, Johanna Wokalek, Florian Lukas
• Bilateral coproduction agreements exist with Germany, Austria, Canada, France, Italy, Belgium and the French community of Belgium. With the exception of Canada, these agreements cover only films produced for theatrical exhibition. Switzerland is a member of the European convention for coproductions and by this multilateral convention is linked to many more European countries. In most cases, the minimal Swiss participation required varies between 10% and 20%. If no coproduction agreement is applicable – as is the case for the USA, for instance – the minimal Swiss participation is 50%.
Salt of this Sea (2008) France/Switzerland Director: Annemarie Jacir Cast: Suheir Hammad, Saleh Bakri, Sylvia Wetz
La stella che non c'è Italy-France-Switzerland (2006)
• The artistic and technical participation (which includes the hiring of Swiss technicians, assistants and actors) must be proportional to the Swiss financial participation. This condition also applies to postproduction. Since there are no fixed criteria for the evaluation of the percentage, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
Director: Gianni Amelio Cast: Sergio Castellitto, Zing Thou
Les murs porteurs France-Germany-Switzerland (2006)
• Once theses conditions have been met, the Swiss coproducer can acquire the official agreement from the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
Director: Cyril Gelblat Cast: Charles Berling, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Miou-Miou
DOCUMENTARY
Films officially coproduced with Switzerland have access to the public film funding of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
Egoïst – Lotti Latrous Germany/Switzerland (2007)
• Selective public funding sees an independent expert committee choose and propose film projects for production subsidies. The maximum subsidy per film is 1,5 million Swiss Francs and cannot exceed 50% of the production costs (Swiss part).
Director: Stephan Anspichler
• Succès cinéma is a funding program based on a film’s success. For each ticket bought in a Swiss cinema, the Swiss screenwriter, director, producer, distributor and cinema owner gets a bonus which must be reinvested in their next film project.
Staub Germany/Switzerland (2007)
• Other funding programs include the annual competition for the Swiss Film Prize Quartz, as well as subsidies for the release of a film or for its participation in an international film festival.
Le pere di Adamo (2007) Italy/France/Denmark/ Switzerland
Director: Hartmut Bitomsky
Director: Guido Chiesa

Founded in the early 70’s, the CAC-VOLTAIRE is a non-profit cultural association, partly subsidized by the State of Geneva (Department of Public Instruction), and the city of Geneva (Department of Cultural Affairs). Its mission consists of the defense and the promotion of a cinema of quality, which could be from yesterday, today or tomorrow. Under the leadership of Rui Nogueira & Nicoletta Zalaffi’s, which began in 1977, the CAC-VOLTAIRE developped considerably its action. For this, we have two show rooms: Michel Simon (200 seats) and Henri Langlois (70 seats). On the other hand, since 1995, CAC-VOLTAIRE developped a policy of purchasing rights and reediting brand new prints of great classical movies of Cinema d’histoire. We show them in our theaters before dealing them all around Switzerland. Henceforth, we have a catalogue rich of more than 100 titles, which can be obtained on request.

Every August, 180’000 cinema-goers, 1’000 journalists, and over 3’300 professionals converge on the small Swiss-Italian town of Locarno, which becomes the world capital of cinema for eleven days. Cinéphiles come to Locarno for discovery. Likewise, Locarno is also recognized by distributors, buyers and producers all over the world as an important industry showcase for auteur filmmaking, as well as an invaluable networking opportunity. Moreover, the Locarno Festival has established itself as an ideal platform for the promotion of national cinemas from Europe and around the world.
The Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) is the only international festival in Switzerland devoted to genre movies, Asian cinema and digital images. Ever since, the festival has been highly appreciated by professionals as well as the general public. During Fantoche’s latest edition in 2007, 62 different programmes with 333 short and feature films from 29 countries were shown. Switzerland’s biggest and most prestigious animated festival attracted 25'000 visitors. With it’s seventh edition in September 2009, Fantoche will again, with curiosity and passion, track the global development of animation film: The heart of the festival is its international competition, which aims to attract bold, artistic and visionary animation films. Fantoche encourages the vision of young talents, puts Swiss animated film making on an international footing and shows the world's most important productions, as well as the viewing public's favorites. Fantoche takes a close look at specific aspects of animation with blocks devoted to particular themes, historic features and countries. The festival showcases work from art colleges and gives professionals the chance to attend workshops with leading international figures. Not least Fantoche also presents a rich programme of events for children and organizes animation workshops in schools. Numerous fringe events, such as exhibitions, presentations and discussion forums, offer the opportunity to take an in-depth look at specific themes and to rub shoulders with film makers and producers. All in all, Fantoche is a festival marked by encounter, exchange and inspiration. Please check our website www.fantoche.ch for periodic updates, downloads and latest information.

The Festival is dedicated to the French 7th Art and takes place in the largest bilingual city of Switzerland called Biel-Bienne. A great majority of the films presented are previews and subtitled in German (40% of the audience speaks German). The FFFH is aiming at bringing the French and the Swiss culture together as well as connecting the Swiss German and Swiss French cultures. Among 25 screenings in 2008 the public could enjoy four films and 3 short films in the presence of the film team. The screenings were followed by a twenty-minute talk, a unique moment of exchange and encounter between the public and the talents. The Festival takes the symbolism of the three-coloured French flag as its motto: The first day of the festival is presented as the blue day; the second as the white day and the last day as the red one. During the last four editions the festival successfully collaborated with the “Theodora Foundation” and organised the Children's Day: A special afternoon devoted to our youngest moviegoers.

Always on the lookout for the best in Asian, African and South American cinema, the festival’s program focuses on themes such as social topics (migration, clan mentality, war, adolescence), current events, popular cinema, new urban cultures, or defined by genre (Latin-American thrillers, Nigerian videos, Korean documentaries…), and retrospectives of directors.
The Solothurn Film Festival is the most important festival for Swiss film productions. Every year in January, the festival presents a representative selection of current Swiss films in “Swiss Forum”. The festival program is supplemented with two exclusive special sections: the “Rencontre” and the “Invitation” section. The main focus of the Solothurn Film Festival encompasses a representative cross-section of current Swiss films. Screened at the festival are about 300 film productions of all genres and lengths: fiction films, documentary films, experimental films and animation films – short films, as well as films for the cinema and television. A Swiss film production is defined by the film director’s country of origin, irrespective of the film location, film crew and/or financial sources.
Black Movie is a contemporary film festival based on today’s social and aesthetic realities, presenting an original and innovative program. In the previous editions, some of the world's most innovative filmmakers have attended the festival, such as the Argentinian Lisandro Alonso, the Korean Hong Sang-soo, the Taiwanese Tsai Ming-Liang, the Mexican Carlos Reygadas, the Chinese Jia Zhang Ke, …
The diversity of Swiss film productions is reflected in the film program, which is intended to inspire, entertain, challenge the senses and broaden our horizons. The Solothurn Film Festival supports this form of cinema and its makers.

Since its creation in 1980, the Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) has promoted quality films and supported independent cinema and young filmmakers from Asia, South America and Africa. The core of the festival is the high-level competition of featurelength fiction and documentary films, which attracts every year audacious, artistic and visionary pictures. Alongside the competition, special sections and retrospectives offer the possibility of going deeper into a cinematographic topic, genre or period.
ENSEMBLE – TOGETHER 1969 – 2009: 40 years of Nyon – a tradition 1995 – 2009: 15 years of Visions du Réel – a project For us and with you, cinéma du réel is the most up–to–date, the most creative and the most enterprising version of contemporary film–making. These films, which have emerged from the documentary–film tradition, come in a diverse range of genres, narrative styles and viewpoints. Life as it is actually lived and denounced, the way it is dreamt of and hoped for, from the perspective of filmmakers whose visions inspire our presence in the world. Visions du Réel, which is now an entry in the best-known French dictionary (see under Nyon), is the only platform where all the different genres and players come together to focus on the source of images.
Winners 2008: Le Regard d’Or (Grand Jury Award, CHF 30’000): “Flower in the Pocket”, Liew Seng Tat, Malaysia – Special Jury Award (5’000): “El Camino”, Ishtar Yasin, Costa Rica – Public Award (CHF 5’000): “La Zona”, Rodrigo Plá, Mexico – FIPRESCI Award: “Fille de la terre noire”, Jeon Soo-il, South Corea. Highlights 2009: In 2009, the FIFF pays homage to the Peruvian film director Francisco Lombardi who presents ten movies of his impressive work. The “Fábulas da favela” section showcases Brazilian films based on the theme of the favela and questions the evolution of its cinematographic representation. “Out of Bollywood” introduces Indian cinematography of the past two years reflecting the current trends. Through the programme “The Godfather in Asia” the FIFF follows the marks of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy in several Asian cinematographies. With “Revanches de femmes” it introduces a section centred on American rape and revenge movies of the 1970s. “Made in Nollywood” invites the audience to discover the Nigerian film industry. A variety of side programmes, highly appreciated by both the professionals and the general public, accompanies the actual movie experience, such as the networking platform Forum@FIFF, panel discussions and special events. Please check our website www.fiff.ch for more background information and the latest news.
Workshops 2009 As the highlight of the Festival, the Workshops enable the audience to discover the film-makers’ work through their own eyes. For its 15th edition, Visions du Réel is organizing an exceptional meeting with the Kazakh Sergey Dvortsevoy and the Lebanese couple Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige who re-invent film through the strength of their commitment and their poetic inspiration. Special consideration is given to the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the 10th anniversary of EURODOC, the DocWeb and Doc Alliance, the new del for feature documentaries. Doc Outlook-International Market The Market Screenings, an essential selective market for all professionals; the coproduction Market as best international strategy to support 12 European full-length films; the Think Doc Tank, a forum for reflection, debate and professionals’ issues: the Agora topic 2009: Authenticity/Documentary/Archive.
